Rough Draft is a 30-day creative challenge led by a small group of writers and artists seeking to find joy and community in the creative process.

What is a "Rough Draft"?

Every great piece of art or literature starts as an idea - but it doesn’t stop there. A rough draft is your first attempt at taking on your creative project from start to finish. This process can be very daunting - but that's why we're here. RDMO will help you achieve your goals in a fun and community focused way.

Goal Tiers

Instead of a main challenge, we created 4 tiers (60K, 50K, 30K, and Flex) to create flexibility for your unique project. Examples of a Flex Goal include lines for poetry, scenes for screenplays, panels for graphic novels/cartoonists, and more.

Rough Draft Month Week 1

It's Sunday, so I'm considering it technically the end of the first week of the month. I'm only 150 words shy of being completely on track which I'm at peace with. I'm still pissed I don't have a nice cushion set up yet, though, so I'll need to work on that throughout the week. 

Right now I can only get about 1,500 words in before I'm called away to do stuff. Next week's not looking promising, as my landlady will have all sorts of people over to fix stuff in the flat which will lead to tons of distractions. And the next weekend is also very busy >:// BUT the back half of the month is slightly better off, so I hope I can make it up with some furious writing then.

I'm ngl I was very nervous about promising to write this project, since I wasn't particularly confident I wouldn't immediately hate, or lose steam with what I was writing. I thought I'd get to the starting line and realise none of the ideas I had were good or that I just can't write this kind of stuff after all. So I've been surprised with how naturally everything's coming so far. Tbf, it's only the first three days. I haven't even finished the first chapter yet so maybe I'm putting the cart before the horse. But it feels like I can get myself into a flow state really easily right now and the thing just kind of writes itself (is it because I'm stealing so much from Deep Space Nine it makes it easy? Nobody look too closely at my Chief Medical Officer whose name starts with a J). It's made me far more optimistic about my chances of finishing.

And yeah, now that I'm looking at my wordcount, I think I'll need to split my first chapter into two, cos 5k+ words on just the opening is a bit absurd.

Die Präsentation zeigt die Folien und Inhalte des Worshops Datenmanagementpläne und ihre Werkzeuge (z.B. RDMO), der am 28.05.2019 in der Universitätsbibliothek Hildesheim stattfand. Organisiert wurde dieser Workshop von Annette Strauch, Forschungsdatenmanagement, UB Hildesheim, und wurde zusammen mit Torsten Rathmann des BMBF-geförderten Projekt FoDaKo, Forschungsdatenmanagement in Kooperation, durchgeführt. Es ging bei dieser Veranstaltung um den Umgang mit “Tools” im Forschungsdatenmanagement, insbesondere um Werkzeuge mit denen Datenmanagementpläne geschrieben werden können. Mit dem Research Data Management Organiser (RDMO) können Institutionen und Forschende das Forschungsdatenmanagement ihrer Projekte strukturiert planen und durchführen. Es ist ein Werkzeug, das das Erfassen aller relevanten Planungsinformationen in Datenmanagementplänen und die Verwaltung aller Datenmanagementaufgaben erlaubt. Das Tool RDMO wurde für die Universität Hildesheim vom lokalen Rechenzentrum installiert und steht zum Einsatz für die Forscherinnen und Forscher bereit.

Alrighty! Last day of October! Definitely not freaking out at all! Ironically, prepping for November has messed up my otherwise standard writing habit so hopefully I get back on the wagon properly from the first.

Words

My stretch goal: 50,000 (RDMO's Forest Trail)

My minimum goal: 30,000

Minimum words to hit each day: 1,000

One day a week (whichever is the most free): 3,000+

I'll write in 30 minute sprints (30m = 500 words) and carve out some time in the morning and the evening to ensure I don't leave everything until the last minute. I do plan to write every day. There are a few days I'll be busy and it'll be harder, but worst comes to worst I can jot things down in my notes app.

I'll do weekly word count updates and roundups on Sundays.

Format

Handwriting. Bought a new notebook in advance, so I have one and a half notebooks in terms of space. My hands already hurt all the time because of the cool weather so I imagine by the end of November they'll be completely destroyed.

My projects

Main: Avalon Prime

A cozy sci fi young adult drama, set on a space station far from civilisation. Ella is ripped from her vibrant and comfortable life on Earth when her father takes a job settling a newly-discovered alien station far from civilisation. All evidence of who built it, and where they went, has long since disappeared, and much of the station is sealed off and too damaged to settle fully. Ella and other settlers must try and somehow make this station a home, unable to fathom what lies in the lower decks.

Inspo: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet, Brooklyn 99? Somehow?

Secondary: Soulbound (I'll be working on this on days I might hit writer's block)

Queer orc romantasy that is steadily becoming less romantic and erotic and more dry as I get overexcited about orc politics xD I ran out of steam a little earlier in October but Garth and Alexander are currently in the muddy middle and I've got some momentum back working on this chapter. Ngl, I am gonna miss them like hell in November so I'm throwing them in here as an option to take a break and get a brain refresh.

I was supposed to spend my time after work today cleaning my flat so that I won't have to worry about it for the month, but because I'm a dingus I scheduled a date for today instead lol. Luckily everything else is prepared.

And I'll be mealprepping like a fiend for the next few days. I've already got a bolognese and butchered chicken in the freezer; today and tomorrow will be lasagne and chilli and that should keep my cooking time to a minimum for the month.

I'd hoped to have finished Pathologic 2 before I started but that's definitely not happening, so I'll let P2 time be one of my rewards for a successful first few days.

Rough Draft Month 2024 Update

After the halfway mark I lost so much steam (hence the late update; I kinda forgot)

But I did manage to get a bit done over the past week;

finished writing up the "main" characters

started doing some research on post apocalyptic worlds (I found books and websites that I need to check out later, lol)

did research on zombies to have a reference for my own (there are so many zombie types!! TT~TT)

ended up taking a lot of rest days :/

but I'm still on track, so I'll take it!
