Wow just wow 🤩🤩🤩
For me performers in BTS goes like : JM > JK > Hobi > Tae > Suga > Jin > RM
Jimin is superior, no matter who denies it we all know even haters eyes automatically gravitate towards him. Theres a reason why among all member's his fancams went viral multiple times. He gracefully flows but with crisp moves. Basically sex symbol of BTS... no one can say Jimin's performance doesn't make them feel some way lol. Just him wearing his purple outfit with purple eyes and wt hair is enough to captivate people.
Jk and hobi, for me the difference is power and sex appeal. JK gives more power in moves and oozes sex appeal which makes his performance more attractive. He performs like he wanna wreck you lol.
Someone told Jimin always gives : Come and get me energy while JK gives: I'm gonna eat you up energy. Its evident in their performances too.
Tae and Yoongi are laid back perfomers but Tae's cold looks gives him an aura which makes him more appealing to many. While Yoongi only concentrate on expressions while his part comes up. But I don't understand why some are adamant about Tae being in dance line lol. There's a huge difference in movements and stability 3J gives in performance vs tae.
Jin and RM, not best performers but Jin kinda has a cute expression while performing than RM. While RM looks like he's repeating moves which he by hearted. Also many expressions make his performance awkward lol. But it's ok, as dancing line is strong they cover it up.
Interesting analysis. I don’t know how exactly I would place others besides JM and JK, probably similarly as you.
BTS’s performances overall are incomparable and unmatched. But in my opinion JM and JK in both group and solo performances stand out.
Let’s watch some Jimin’s now
1st of all this legendary iconic Jimin main character

The JM
You know, for all the suspicious shit Jungkook and Jimin have done over the years, I don't know why the hand tattoo isn't talked about as much... Because for me, besides the ear sucking incident, that's the most 🤨 thing I have ever seen them do. We talk a lot about what Jimin says, does etc., but when it comes to Jungkook is much less frequent he will say something, he mostly does stuff. And boy, when he does, he goes all out (cof cof GCF cof cof). But, for me, the boldest thing he's ever done is the JM tattoo.
I take it like this:
1) The tattoo has no relation to BTS. The J and the Army are just to say "Jungkook and Army".
-> Then why the ring finger? Yeah, he has other tattoos on his fingers, maybe he was putting one tattoo on each finger, but still... Wouldn't it be better to have the J in the middle? Or it could've been switched with the crown. But no, it's right above the M. I just find the placement strange (not in a bad way, just odd/suspicious)
2) The tattoo is for the BTS members.
-> So this one is tricky. Yeah the "A" can be an upside down V, then you have "RM" and "Y" for Yoongi. But, then... He just bundled up everyone else in the J? Like 3 members get their own letter and then J for the rest. And worse, placing the J above the M so it makes "JM", and Hoseok and Jin are left with a J, if you take away the M, of course. Like, idk, it can be taken as something "smart", but it feels a little bit hmmm for me? Like, if the J was for everyone with a J, he could've but 3J above the M (so it includes Jungkook), so it makes 3J + Jimin. I just find it kinda idk, it's not without regard to the others, it just feels like it was like "Welp, that's the only way everyone fit so that's gonna be it 🤷🏽♀️". So, I kinda believe this one and kinda don't at the same time. I find it more probable than the J only for Jungkook theory.
Either way, if it is for the members or not, I still believe the JM was deliberate and it is for Jimin. It's too on the nose. It's actually so obvious it's a perfect "hide in plain sight" thing. If someone asks he can either say it's only for his name or it's for all of his bandmates. The acronym on the ring finger is still JM though.

Hi!! I really like your blog and it’s great to find an active Hobi blog. I just got into BTS this past month and was wondering if you had recommendations or favorite Jhope (and overall BTS) content/videos to check out for a complete beginner! Even though I’ve casually listened to BTS since 2015/2016, I didn’t follow them or even know all their names/faces well... until recently I watched a couple of Jhope’s stages and was like damnnn, I need to know him and the whole group more!! Iconic stages, funny videos, interesting interviews, whatever you enjoy :) Thank you!
thank u so much thats very sweet 🥹<33 im very honored that youve chosen to ask me this because this is a biiig question n i shall do my best🫡 ok well firstly, i think it would be insane to not start off with hobipalooza
his lollapalooza set can be watched in full here, which u might have already seen, but for an added bonus u can listen to his albums hope world + jack in the box, THEN watch his lolla set to really get a feel for how he brings his songs to life while performing them. his music is great but for me his true stardom lies in his performance and stage presence and hobipalooza will tell u everything u need to know about jhope as a performer 🥹🤩
just some of his many iconic solo performances:
more + arson at the 2022 mnet asian music awards (+ future)
the only live performance hes done of on the street 🥲
also the dynamite + butter performance from that same day just cus u can see the pure joy in his face and the love he has for performing 🫂 despite them both being songs that he originally had less than like 10 seconds of lines in each
his performance and interview on iu's palette my beloved
all of his just dance performances are amazing and consistent but heres a good fancam
as for bts group performances i think its best to look at their older songs as he has not had many lines in their recent releases :/ some that i really love:
mic drop is kind of known as his song, heres their snl performance, most recent performance of it, and another favorite of mine hehe
outro: tear specifically his verse at the end (around the 4 minute mark)
chicken noodle soup at the 2021 muster, its jhopes song but they performed it all together
boy meets evil + blood sweat & tears at 2016 mama
idk im drawing a blank but honestly any of their old concerts or fanmeets/musters are really great. you can find a lot of them here
some dance focused videos since hes the main dancer 🫶
any of his old hope on the street videos that i miss so dearly. theyre just videos of him freestyling for a while and he does it so effortlessly and its rly satisfying to watch. 2020, 2021, with jimin, with jungkook
the iconic no more dream dance break 🙇
this random dance performance 3j did i use to watch this on a monthly basis
another 3j dance video of the megan thee stallion butter remix
i feel like its kinda obvious but i also want to recommend his music videos since theyre all rly amazing but some of my favs are more, daydream, chicken noodle soup, and on the street
ok im gonna stop cus this is getting long and i dont want to overwhelm u but im also definitely forgetting stuff,, everyone else feel free to add stuff in the replies!! anyway i hope this helps!
#my memory is actually so horrible lately but i really tried lmao 😭#but congrats on beginning the process of devoting urself to jhopeism <3#i hope u have fun watching these!!#mail

teehee you told me to drop by so i'm asking the most important question of them all.... of the main new directions who do they bias in bts and how much do they like bts 🤭
hi u are so real for this sorry this has taken me a while to get to!! been trying to organise my thoughts but i'm still not fully set on things. i guess ill do this from like. most to least likely to enjoy bts? (also i will say i have thoughts on the vb au squad specifically! i don't remember them in detail and they're probably similar to what i've written here but i def remember talking about it with mist)
tina: 100% most likely to be an army also def a once and a sone but that's not relelvant here! girlie has taste and i love that for her <3 she has jimin stan energy to me, i think she'd see the similarities between him and mike and she'd have a major soft spot for that
sugar: not technically one of the main new directions but i wanted to include her anyway bc i bet she loves bts. she has that vibe. she'd have all the merch and could very easily spend hundreds of dollars on concert tickets for herself and tina and anyone else who wanted to come. idk how she'd feel about the older eras but she'd def be a fan of the more poppy songs (maybe hyyh-onwards? def enjoys the LY/MOTS eras). probably a big vocal line fan, specifically jin and possibly jungkook as a bias wrecker
brittany: i think she'd enjoy bts a lot tbh! idk if she'd dive deep into fan theories or keep up with stuff like run bts but she'd def vibe with their music and i would kill to see her do the dance challenges or even full dance covers. i'd say she's hobi-biased but also just a big fan of 3J/sunshine line
blaine: i think he'd enjoy their more recent eras! mainly LY/MOTS-onwards i think? he has boy with luv/dynamite vibes. major jungkook stan in my head but i think he would really enjoy joon's lyrics/writing style
mike: def introduced to bts through tina dkfjgh but i think he'd get sucked in by the dance practices and the live performances even if the music itself isn't necessarily stuff he'd listen to! probably a 3J stan, if i had to pick one i'd very hesitantly say jimin
santana: idk if she'd listen to them regularly but. i do think she'd vibe a lot with agust d's albums? and i also think she'd find mono and indigo really soothing. epiphany would alter her brain chemistry and no one can tell me otherwise! i know for a fact that she would cry at that song. namgi fan
quinn: casual bts listener i think? def a joon stan tho i don't make the rules here!! i do also think she'd enjoy jin's voice a lot
artie: i feel like bts would be a guilty pleasure for him? idk if he'd be super invested but he would enjoy some of their music and he would def have an appreciation for the mvs! musically i'd say he enjoys tae the most but he def thinks jimin is ridiculously pretty
sam: hmmm sam is one i feel much less familiar with. mist said u guys have talked about blamtina being armys together and i can kinda see that? he does also kinda seem like he'd consider them a guilty pleasure to me tho. jin or jungkook stan energy
mercedes: secondhand fan through tina! idk if she'd listen to them on her own but if tina is around she doesn't mind listening to them. there's bound to be at least one song that hits hard for her but idk what it is rn. i think she'd appreciate tae's voice the most?
kurt: also introduced to them through tina! idk if i see him being much of a kpop fan but i do think he'd appreciate the aesthetics and the artistry of it all. i think he'd like jungkook bc he gets blaine vibes from kookie? alternatively there's sth about him that makes me think jimin stan
puck: bts doesn't really have much rock music so i guess puck wouldn't be super interested in most of it but i feel like there are probably a few songs he might enjoy just vibe-wise? maybe stuff like stigma, house of cards? i also inexplicably get a hip hop fan vibe from him despite that not being a thing in canon so i could potentially see him vibing with their earlier eras and stuff like the cyphers and being biased towards the rap line? but i'm not very set on that
finn: doesn't strike me as much of a kpop fan tbh but i think there are a couple of songs here and there he might like (fake love rocking mix!). idk if he'd actually ever remember any of their names tho kdfjgh he'd probably pick a different bias every time he's asked bc he never pays enough attention to recognise any of them
rachel: does not have kpop fan vibes to me at all but i find it hard to read her so i could be wrong there? idk i don't think she'd really listen to their music since she is so showtunes to me. that being said i think if she had to pick a fav it would be jungkook if only bc of the gold star/golden maknae association
#ask md#wlwtomlinson#glee x bts#new directions#glee hcs#if i were a gifmaker i'd be making SO many glee x bts lyric gifsets u have no idea#u'd better believe i have so many ideas already#if any gifmakers are willing to put up with my requests i have some at the ready always#also sorry for all the LY/MOTS mentions but i am truly going through it with them these days they are The Eras to me#though i could probably pick a fav era for each of them or sth idk#i will get to ur other ask in a bit but oh it feels so much harder dkfjghdfkh

You mentioned somewhere that Jimin ended up being your favourite dancer in BTS. And yes, he is pretty amazing. Can you list your favourite Jimin performances?
I personally think each of the 3J is special and talented. The energy Hobi brings is unmatchable and he is the king of street dance. JK is crisp and clean in his movements and I hope he goes back to b-boying because he was so good at it! Jimin - his knowledge of other forms of dance help him, but what I love is the smoothness…the fluidity is what gets you. He is sexy. Drop dead sexy when he dances.
**
Hi Anon,
When I was not yet an ARMY and kinda just watched BTS from the sidelines, there was a performance I saw that made me really notice Jimin. I was in Korea at the time and saw it in person live at a music show, and I remember afterwards looking up every single performance version and fancam for like a whole day. The performance I saw was 21st Century Girl on October 27, 2016. I've found a fancam so y'all can have an idea of what I saw up close.
youtube
*
A better angle:
youtube
(First of all, 21st Century Girl is such a criminally underrated song. This track is a solid bop)
*
He was the best dancer on that stage. Or maybe it's more accurate to say I liked his dancing the best. Even though he missed a small move every time he did the chorus. The way he weighted his movements was ridiculous, it was like he would fall over any minute but he still somehow maintained his balance - it creates such a sickening effect and it elevates his dancing. And that's my favorite thing about Jimin's dancing, and what I think sets him above practically any other dancer in k-pop: it's how he weights his movements. The dancer closest to Jimin (which is still by a wide margin to be honest) in this skill is maybe Ten. But this is basically Jimin's secret weapon, he moves like he's indulging in his movements, even when it is sharp and hard-hitting. It looks so natural and easy for him, but when he amps up the energy it feels extreme. Like, as different from 'natural and easy' as is possible, that the fact he is dancing like that, at all, itself becomes the source of awe.
One performance that I think shows what I mean is this:
youtube
*
Even for more chill choreographies where all the other members dance exceptionally well, it's like Jimin somehow wears the dance better. For example:
youtube
*
I really don't want to list my favourite Jimin performances, Anon. Because I'm a bit selfish and I’d rather keep those to myself. Lol. But the videos I’ve pasted above are all good examples of what I’ve described.

The hug between jungkook and jimin was so cute! You can tell they haven't seen each other in a long time. Kinda sad tho.. because I would think jimin would've visited jungkook when he arrived the day prior or that they would've rode together to see hobi off
I thought so at first, but I'm not so sure now. There were no subtitles when I watched the video, but I saw trans accounts say Jimin asked Jungkook "The alcohol smell, is it you? Is it me?" (or something like that) and Jungkook answered "It's me". Because of the translation it seems like maybe they drank together the night before? Sounded like an inside joke. Also, Jimin hugged Jungkook the way he did Hobi. It was an emotional time for them, maybe Jimin was seeking comfort too. Jungkook was smiling so much though, you can see it when you zoom in on them. He also had his soft and tender "Jimin hyung" gaze. They stuck close together most of the video, like usual, and when Jimin got there, Jungkook reached out to him. Apart from J-Hope, who got many hugs and pats for obvious reasons, and Jin, also for obvious reasons, those two were the only ones being cuddly. It was typical Jikook, but a bit sweeter than usual because of the context.
It seems that Jimin got there later than Vhopekook, and maybe V and Jungkook arrived together. Had Jungkook been with V? Jungkook smelled of alcohol but V shared that the last time he drunk was the day of JK's live... Maybe they arrived separately? It's not clear when they got there. Also, yesterday was all about J-Hope, so I wonder if 3J didn't hang out a bit, and then maybe J-Hope went to bed and Jikook drank some more alone? Seems like something they would do. I don't know. In my experience, things are not what they seem. We see 1% of their lives and make assumptions based on that. I've been surprised so many times by the members' behavior, words, or who they are friends with. In 2020 and early 2021 it seemed like BTS were taking a rest and we were dry on content, but they were actually recording and shooting a million different things and we were later overwhelmed with everything. And Jikook especially have moments of 0 content, and then boom, so much Jikook content.
It was cute, that's all that should matter. I'm talking to myself too because I had similar thoughts at first... We have to let it go.

There are 7!/(2!(7-2)!) = 21 duos and 7!/(3!(7-3)!) = 35 trios in BTS. I kinda want to do a poll tournament to see which duo and trio would win, but I don't think I have enough followers to get anywhere with it lol. I personally wouldn't be able to choose between my bias line 3J or jinjikook fjfjajshfjfkfk.

Honestly, I don't even have anything to ask. I was just rewatching the flying yoga episodes a couple days ago. And Jikook were just fjqsmqlseifjk in this one. So cute. So soft.
Jimin looks SO FREAKING SOFT in this one, I don't get it, HOW ??? How do you do it Jimin? tell me your secret?
And Jungkook was so freaking cute, I want to cry. He had so much fun, and it was perfect for him. I'm so glad they had an activity that he was the one to chose.
That's it, that's the ask. I love them. I miss them.
Hi Lovely,
Thank you for this! Ugh, I love rewatching content to give me that serotonin boost🥹
The other day I was rewatching jikook’s vlog diaries they did and I was telling my friends how cute and awkward they were! Growing from young boys to seasoned industry men.
It’s so nice that they still have kept the essence of them no matter how many years in front of a camera.
Even when playing around they’re just 🥹
Like ‘Run! BTS’ has 150+ episodes and still years later, with the special episodes they did, it was just as fun, chaotic and just THEM!
That episode(s) you mentioned was soo fun! Like we didn’t get our pole dancing episode that was thrown out there, but this is kinda what I would have imagined that to be.
Like are we surprised Jimin, class president in school for years, was the one that did the demonstrations with the instructor?
Fetus 3J 🥹
Look at him 😩 Soft, yes, but firm and strong where it counts too.
Jungkook was in his element this episode as well. That guy is an energiser bunny for real! Was he still for more than a minute the whole episode?? I love him but lordy the members and Jiminie have so much energy for him 😅
I’d need frequent naps around his energy 😩
Mister ‘I can handle it’, having fun with his KooKoo San. Those two are a match in every sense😂
It was such a fun episode watching them all try, fail, succeed, have fun and look good 😜
This is why we love them, they make fantastic music, are smart, gorgeous and GOOFY😍
Namjoon & Yoongi giving perfection flying yoga 😂
I know the members, specifically Tae, Yoongi & Jungkook have talked about maybe an ‘In The Soop’ or ‘Bon Voyage’ after 2025, but I really need more ‘Run! BTS’ tooooo
In the meantime I’m still rewatching the episodes like you. I started but I’m only at like the 50’s so still lots to get through until our 7 return 💪
Thank you for this, loved it

Wonder why HER didn’t tag Jimin on either of her posts she uploaded with 3js. She even tagged cold play. Now people are using it to hate on JM & others saying its proof he deleted that app. Honestly seems kinda messed up she didn’t tag him either time. Someone should’ve briefed her how insane army gets when a member is left out. Now she’s done it twice & PJMs are starting to take it personal & maybe should’ve warned her about before posting that pic with the girl since Army think BTS are virgins
Jimin has deactivated the option to be tagged since he created his Instagram account or made it public. I think only people he follow can do it.
What you explain it mention in your ask is ridiculous, people, “fans” need to understand their place.

fatherhhod fatherhood fatherhood fatherhood
and SMUTLOL i know i already commented but SMUTLOL?!?!?@3J
FIRST OFF, THANK YOU FOR THE ASK ❤️!!
HAHHAHA!! OKAY SO FATHERHOOD FIC! Here's kinda what it's about-ish?? I don't have a lot done for this one so it's bare bones.
Link is a single father after Malon dies, and he struggles to be both a knight and present father, and takes comfort with Zelda who tries to help him out a bit like with hours. But then it leaves her open to attack, and Link has to start thinking of what to prioritize. Since he obviously would put his kid first, it would be a no brainer, but his kid is safe, and he just wants to spend time with her being a father, but Zelda’s life is in danger, and he would leave her open to die if he leaves. He sees what neglect does to Zelda with her father, so he doubles down on not knowing what to do. Because duty and family are the two virtues that were drilled into him his whole life, he struggles to find the balance. My only reallll problem with this fic is that I'm not a parent, and I don't interact with children regularly, so I'm afraid of something ringing really false. Like the general plot? Of course he'd pick his kid. So there needs to be more push towards duty too, but realistically, what would a parent ever put before their kid? Probably nothing, so that's my 'dilemma' with actually writing this one!
////
And SmutLol hahahahha!! Omg. I have always desperately wanted to be able to write smut, but I suck at it. It's always trash. So this doc is (omg this number is kinda embarassing) 102 pages of smut practice, and almost all of it is Pirate Link/Zelda from Through Hell or High Water, because we know he's got a wild imagination, so he's really easy to write for, honestly!
It's still in Zelda's perspective mostly though so I don't break that flow, but yeah, it's just pages and pages of me getting over fear of smut writing! Right now, I'm trying to get from "writing a manual" style to "oh look, emotions!" When I wrote Alone With You, some people couldn't even tell if Link and Zelda ever hooked up because I wrote it with terror in my mind. Whether it ever happens in the story, or just his mind is totally up in the air, but we know he could dream it all anyway 😂! There's really not much that’s safe for tumblr in this cursed doc because it is just practice without plot, but hahha oh well!
Okay, a small snippit with Pirate Link and Zelda from Through Hell or High Water is below the cut, and it's safely not smut! Just a 'you know what just happened' thing. I'm sorry if it's bad! Like I said, this all isn't my forte so it's just practice lol!
~~
Link’s hand was warm on Zelda’s skin. Warmer than she’d imagined it would be. She could feel his steady breaths and the light touch of his fingers dancing across the small of her back.
Never in her life did she imagine that she’d wake up beside him pressed into his side, her lips tickling the fine hairs on his chest as she tried to keep her breathing steady. His hand had to be sore, wound around her to keep her close. She could get used to this far too easily.
The feeling of perfection was difficult to replicate, but she’d hold tight to this memory for as long as she lived.
There was a piece of her that was thoroughly embarrassed that he was seeing her unclothed in the morning light, the blanket closer to their hips than covering anything else. Everything looked different in the night, and she suddenly felt horrified that in the daylight, he’d look differently at her.
It was then that she noticed the patterns on her back were far too deliberate, and she’d begun to twitch at some of them, arching closer into him.
He was awake and watching her every move.
She reacted, and immediately, Link’s hand shifted patterns, a subtle awareness of her awakening. Humming contentedly, she could have easily been lulled back to sleep.
“How are you this morning, love?” he whispered, his hand trailing a burning path up her spine so he could play at her ear instead.
She was smiling too widely; there was no way he couldn’t feel her grinning into his chest. It shook with his unbidden laughter, and she knew there was no more pretending that she didn’t notice him. So, she pressed her lips against his chest and let the feeling burn her into a thousand pieces of ash. He sucked in a breath, and she could have cried in relief at the rush of everything all at once: the unfamiliar familiarity of waking up with someone. The new sensations of skin and warmth. Of touch. Human connection. Everything she’d been missing and needing flooding into her all at once.

How and when did you became an ARMY and a jikooker
I was aware of BTS as early as 2014. But tbh I really didn’t pay attention to them as a viable music source until later. I’m old and SHINHWA, Park Ji Yoon and Rain were kinda more my thing. Jimin and Jungkook specifically grabbed my attention when they did the now-iconic 2015 “Perfect Man” cover and Jimin killed with Minwoo’s part and those dance moves omg. Also I thought the name Jung Kook was a stupid translation of a lovely name. I was in a whole bitch phase for awhile there.
So I knew who BTS was and primarily who Jimin was. I was in it for the dancers so I got to know Hobi and Jungkook (I got used to it) too and eventually everyone else. I was having a pretty intense life, so I didn’t pursue my stan journey right away. My BTS fan experience is a slow burn acquaintances to lovers fan fiction ft. Jimin and Jungkook as the dancer and singer who live in an apartment together, oblivious to my clumsy existence, basically. For several years I admired them on a “wow that nine tailed fox dance damn” and “Airplane Pt 2 is my jam huh those guys seem close” way.
But then Black Swan happened. Black Swan is my jam. And probably yours too but the thing about Black Swan for me is that my ballet dancer ass woke the fuck up and went like
Because in case you are unaware, that choreo is heavily lifted from the gayest of gay ballets, Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake. AKA the Billy Elliot Supertwink Version. And this former ballerina was LIVING. Living I tell you.
And also suddenly paying attention to more than just Jimin and a few songs I liked and felt cool for discovering years earlier like 45 million ARMYs weren’t already at the party. Specifically I noticed that Jungkookie grew the hell UP and also there was nothing straight going on in that household. I mean
And I bought albums and went back over stuff I’d enjoyed on a surface level, mostly 3J dances tbh, and realized that Yoongi is a genius and down the rabbit hole I went with my Jeon-Park House Elf agenda along for the ride.
TL;DR I knew about them for a long time and paid distracted attention until the gays did the thing and my inner fruit fly lost its mind and gave me a parasocial set of relationships about a year ago. Now I’m full on delusional and a massive OT7 stan with a gay double bias and it feels good man.
#anon#ask#BTS#OT7#Jimin is a dance god#black swan tho send help#black swan Koo is one of the very best Koos#jikook#i love the jeon parks they are shameless af

A “brief” reference guide to modern Jewish denominations / Jewish Writing Advice / Jewish Identity / Jewish Reference Guide [graphic at bottom]
Writing a Jew or Jewish family? Aware that Judaism is not a monolith and want to honor that? Great! Need help with that? 100% cool - I’m here as your friendly (virtual) neighborhood Jewish professional to help. Just want to know more about Jewish denominations in comparison to one another? Also great! Fair warning - this is a long one. At least I included a graphic at the bottom?
Quick notes to acknowledge: As always, this is an American and Americanish perspective (and denominations as discussed here are MOSTLY relevant in the U.S. anyways). Additionally, the modern denominations as we think of them today really sprung from Ashkenazi communities in the 19th and 20th centuries. Most extant U.S. synagogues, day schools, and groups follow Ashkenazi customs and align with a denomination born of Ashkenazi tradition (aligning with the approximately 90% of Jewish-Americans who are Ashkenazi or Ashkenazi plus another community). Sephardi, Mizrachi, and other Jewish communities have their own traditions and jurisprudence. Most organized non-Ashkenazi communities in the U.S. identify as nondenominational but most closely compare in practice to orthodoxy, and many non-Ashkenazi Jews (especially outside of major population centers that may have other specific subgroup’s synagogues) are members of and very involved in Ashkenazi-originating movements, institutions, and synagogues.
For the purpose’s of today’s discussion, we’ll start in the 19th century, because Karaites vs Pharisees vs Sadducees is a (his)story for another time. This also isn’t a history of how these denominations came to be-with the exception of some ultraorthodox groups, which may have sprung from the shtel a little earlier, all the below movements popped out of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. I’m also going to list approximate percentage of the American Jewish population, and I’m going to (kinda) go in order from most to least strict/traditionally observant.
Ultraorthodox (aka Haredi): The strictest, more traditional and expansive observance of the Torah, Talmud, and minhagim (customs). About 1% of American Jews are ultraorthodox. Ultraorthodox is not a unified movement.
1a. Haredi, Satmar, and most other groups generally isolate themselves from the wider Jewish world and secular world.
1b. Chabad is also ultraorthodox, but specially seeks to interact with less observant Jews. I wouldn’t call it proselytizing, because they don’t seek to make gentiles Jewish, but they do try and find less observant Jews and bring them closer to Judaism, also establishes small synagogues around the country and world in isolated place.
1c. Ultraorthodox are the most visibly Jewish attired group, wearing Kippahs for all men and boys and tichels (headscarves) and/or wigs for married women. Very modest attire for all. In Ashkenazi Ultraorthodox communities, men also tend to only wear black and white, hats in addition to their kippah (for grown and married men), and wearing tzitzit (a garmet with four corners with strings attached worn under a shirt with the threads sticking out).
1d. Most likely to speak Yiddish or Hebrew as first language.
1e. No gender equality, very strict kosher, and intense community adherence to particular brand of Judaism.
1f. Communities generally led by a Rabbi and a Rebbetzin (Rabbi’s wife) as pair (rabbis are generally expected to be married).
1g. No female Rabbis, same-sex marriage, or intermarriage. Lots of children. Pretty much all boys have Bar Mitzahs, rarely do girls have Bat Mitzvahs.
1h. Services entirely in Hebrew (except maybe the sermon).
1i. Only count matrilineal Jews and converts-Jewish father and gentile mother doesn’t count for them.
1j. Very strict observance of prohibitions and commandments pertaining to Shabbat and holidays.
Modern orthodox: Orthodox, but with some adaptations to modern life. Roughly 9% of American Jews. Also some division within modern orthodoxy (with some congregations being more liberal than others, particularly in regards to women and LGBTQ+ folks), but there are a couple of major organizations that most modox rabbis and congregations affiliate with one another through larger denomination movements (i.e. the Orthodox Union and the Rabbinical Council of America).
2a. Modern orthodox Jews regularly interact with other Jews who are more liberal. They tend to live in more Jewish communities but no issues with interacting with outside world.
2b. Modest clothing and men wear kippot everywhere (when safe). Married women also usually cover their hair (with wigs or tichels). Men also typically wear tzitzit.
2b. Gender roles, but progress being made. Handful of female rabbis emerging in 2010s/2020s. Whether women count in a minyan depends on the specific congregation and many modern orthodox shuls will have separate women’s prayer groups. The prevalence of Bat Mitzvahs also varies wildly congregation to congregation.
2c. Like ultraorthodox, communities are typically led by a Rabbi and his wife the Rebbetzin. Some acceptance of homosexual individuals as members of the community, but no same-sex marriage (some alternate ceremonies emerging). Like one out gay male rabbi. No intermarriage.
2d. Very strict adherence to kosher, would likely not eat at someone less kosher’s home.
2e. Usually have on the higher end of a “normal” amount of children. Services entirely in Hebrew (except sermon).
2f. Only count matrilineal Jews and converts-Jewish father and gentile mother doesn’t count for them.
Less traditionally observant than this is often known as “liberal Judaism” - around 90% of American Jews.
2g. Very strict observance of prohibitions and commandments pertaining to Shabbat and holidays.
Conservative: Brands itself as middle of the road Jewish movement. about 18% of the American Jewish population. No connection to conservative politics, most Conservative with a C Jews are liberal or moderate politically. Often called “Masorti” outside the U.S and hypothetically a unified movement under several connected organizations (i.e. the Masorti Olami and the Jewish Theological Seminary).
3a. Gender equality. Female rabbis and LGBTQ rabbis definitely an acceptable thing, but not as common as with Reform or Reconstructionist.
3b. Formally sanctioned ceremony for same-sex couples to wed under Jewish law since 2012 and affirmation ceremonies since 2006.
3c. Modesty in synagogues but comparable to regular American attire otherwise.
3d. Generally comparable family size to other American families.
3e. Kosher, but not as strict as orthodoxy. Many Conservative Jews have kosher homes but are willing to be more lax when eating out. Synagogues are always kosher.
3f. Services mostly in Hebrew, sermons and some prayers definitely in local language.
3g. Intermarriage is frowned upon, but many otherwise Conservative Jews will be married by a less traditional rabbi or justice of the peace to non-Jewish partners. Although Conservative rabbis do not perform interfaith marriages, many interfaith couples are in Conservative synagogues. In the 90s/2000s it was way less friendly to interfaith couples/families (laughs in having a goyish dad) but that has improved in the past 3-5 years substantially.
3h. Observance of prohibitions and commandments pertaining to Shabbat and holidays is regulated but less strict than orthodoxy. Varies a bit by community. A good example to illustrate this is getting to synagogue on Shabbat:
By the book (not necessarily reflected by attendees): Orthodoxy says you have to walk there (no driving), Reform says it’s no issue to drive on Shabbat, and Conservative says you can drive but only to get to shul and back.
3i. As with orthodoxy, only matrilineal Jews count. Most interfaith families with non-Jewish moms (or moms who converted post-birth of the kid), particularly those who want to participate in Conservative communities will convert the child as a baby so they can have a normal Jewish upbringing (beyond an extra blessing/prayer in the Bnai Mitzvah process and social awkwardness that oft accompanies interfaith families in Jewish spaces).
3j. Most dress comparably to others in geographic area (synagogue notwithstanding, see my other post). Men on the higher end of observant might also wear kippahs all the time as well. Outside of explicitly Jewish contexts, similar lifestyles to surrounding populations. Around the same number of children as in gentile families.
Reform: Not at all traditionally observant. About 35% of American Jews. More or less a cohesive movement linked by organizations (i.e. Women of Reform Judaism and the Union for Reform Judaism).
4a. Reform Judaism is the largest group. It generally views Judaism through the lens of social justice, repairing the world, and cultural heritage as opposed to religious mandate.
4b. Very big on personal choice in what one observes, I like to call it “choose your own adventure” Judaism.
4c. Keeping kosher is uncommon. Some shuls aren’t even kosher.
4d. Reform services use the least Hebrew, although this is changing in some places.
4e. Reform’s standard of Jewishness is 1+ Jewish parent(s) and raised doing Jewish things, regardless of which parent is Jewish.
4f. Very feminist/egalitarian and welcoming to LGBTQ+ folks. Highest number of not-straight rabbis and female rabbis.
4g. Intermarriage very common and can be performed by Reform rabbis.
4h. Reform Judaism was way ahead of the curve in terms of LGBTQ+ rights and religion. The movement has had members advocating for homosexual rights (protection in housing, employment, civil marriage, and other nondiscrimination protections) since 1965 (finally passing formal resolutions in 1977), began proactively including/welcoming out gay rabbis in 1990, created same-gender marriage Jewish ceremonies in 1996/7, and has made resolutions explicitly including bi and trans people as well since 2004 (stuff earlier than that generally specified “gay and lesbian”). An additional resolution was passed in 2015 regarding trans and nonbinary inclusion, alongside guides to help congregations do so.
4i. See #3j - also applies here.
Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform, are the biggest and “standard” movements people will most typically list and identify with, most likely to appear in surveys and studies, are older than everything listed below. Modern Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform all started in the 19th century and some Ultraorthodox groups trace back further than that. I’ve outlined some practical differences, but the basic theoretical difference is that Orthodox considers traditional Jewish law (Halacha) binding and you can’t change it, Conservative believes it it’s binding but the community can change it, and Reform believes that it’s nonbinding.
Some smaller movements:
Reconstructionist - Newest even remotely well-known and organized movement, founded in the 1920s as an offshoot of the Conservative movement. I would describe it as “build your own adventure but Halacha matters (or at least some of it).” The first thing almost every recon Jew I’ve ever met has told me when describing reconstructionism is that they invented the bat mitzvah in 1922, which basically translates to “tradition matters but also egalitarianism.”
Maybe 2%-5% of American Jews today self-ID as Reconstructionist, but I would argue that a lot of nondenominal practitioners have philosophies fairly aligned with the recon ethos.
Jewish Renewal: very small and relatively disorganized movement started in the 1960s. Attempts to bring Jewish tradition and modern sensibilities, hippie Jews who care about Halacha. Big on mysticism and music, doing Jewish enthusiastically, and a tendency towards more traditional observance in conjunction with progressive politics. Kind of the laid-back cousin of reconstructionism, although neither sprung from the other.
(Cultural) Humanistic Judaism: “Non-theistic” Judaism for atheist Jews who still want a connection to their history, culture, and celebrations.
Nondenominational - Nondenominational and post-denominational Jews are the fast growing group. Variety of liberal/non-traditionally observant beliefs and practices, but most will still contextualize themselves around the denominational scale.

Repost: Ask on The Relationship between ARMYs and Other K-pop Fandoms
Anonymous: Hi bpp I'm wondering, is army's relationship with the rest of the kpop fandoms unique to armys or is it the same thing with previous big fandoms like exos or vips or elfs etc? Because with bigbang's recent comeback announcement, i saw a lot of people celebrating and reminiscing of "the good old days" and i wondered if in 10 years if/when bts has slowed down and other groups have risen and taken over, will kpop fans think fondly of them too or will it be the same as now?
***
LMAOOOOOO
(I love seeing optimistic, wholesome asks sprinkled with just a pinch of naivete. Hello anon and thank you for this! How are you doing today?)
You asked two questions so let’s start with the second:
I’m not holding my breath.
Okay for real though, can we even answer this question because, well, who knows if k-pop stans will think fondly of BTS in the future? Hasn’t happened so far, we both know that.
On one hand, nostalgia is kinda universal. Some people are unable to appreciate things in the present and only with the help of hindsight over rose-tinted glasses are they able to examine certain things. And haven’t we seen that with how k-pop stans reacted to DNA? In 2017, with DNA’s release, k-pop stans were clogging up forums and writing threads about how Westernized BTS was and that they were destroying k-pop and would become obsolete that year… cue all the threads upon threads saying the same thing about Dynamite and now reminiscing about DNA era. And ironically, several 4th gen groups and their fandoms now refer to wanting their own ‘DNA era’ which they now see as the turning point that will bring them global stardom. Lol. Or how about the people who are constantly asking for BTS’s 'old music’ (which I kinda get but I’m referring to the type of fan that never appreciated that 'old music’ then) but ignore how though BTS’s music has evolved and the group generally rotates themes, they still use a lot of their old styles, and you can see this in songs like Dis-ease.
Perhaps ARMYs will look back fondly, but other k-pop stans? My experience is that they’ve treated BTS differently for years and that relationship is tinged more with malice, suspicion and disrespect than anything hugely positive tbh (and this is an attitude ARMYs at first stopped tolerating and now return in kind as the fandom has become ginormous. I think some ARMYs 'giving them a taste of their own medicine’ is a terrible strategy because all that does is create an even more toxic environment but I’m not going to even attempt to nanny a fandom of millions of people plus millions more from other fandoms.)
It’s more likely for k-pop stans to be revisionist about BTS’s career in 10 years time in my honest opinion. We’re already seeing that happen with k-pop stans suddenly forgetting/discounting the peculiar challenges BTS dealt with but is anybody really surprised when it is those k-pop fans that stand to benefit from erasing some of these incidents they directly caused from the history books? We’ll likely see more misinformation, more contorting of facts and figures, more selective amnesia, more invented or exaggerated scandals, etc. I was on a Korean forum page yesterday and saw a new type of anti post for Jimin (probably because he’ll be releasing his OST soon) that said his pre-debut 3J dance practice videos showed a 'previously unknown’ trainee/member that Jimin apparently bribed to leave so he can debut with BTS. The source was a Shawol and the evidence was a from fake tuckshop that sells balaclavas… 🤷
…
Needless to say, I’m not optimistic.
About fandom experiences, before I became ARMY I was sort of like a member of all k-pop fandoms and a stan of none, if that makes sense. Kind of like a multi’s multi. I listened to everything, liked a few things here and there and didn’t care very much for any particular group so it was easy to be friends with Exols, VIPs, etc. There was this sort of understanding between Big 3 groups that even if one won an award it would definitely rotate to another Big 3 group the next year and so on. Sometimes there were bitter feuds and some competition but nothing too extreme because they were all sort of in the same clique. That of course changed with BTS and ARMY and I’ve mentioned briefly in this post here, which explains just how extreme that hatred of BTS and ARMYs became.
Practically all of what goes down on stan Twitter today feels like child’s play now compared to what I saw happen in 2018. I’m yet to see anything like that for any group or fandom since.
But I think you’ve already answered your own question, no? In fact, the second question sort of answers the first. Because if k-pop stans are nostalgic for 'the good old days’ of a group with a convicted felon (for sex trafficking etc) then, just how poorly do they think of BTS now and their music?
Somehow I really hope we never find out.

May I know what's your take about Jungkook's overall performance through the year, 2020 and 2021? Do you think he improved? Do you think if there is a possibility that on the album that will be released, they will have solo song again, he can now pull off his solo performance well? Do you think his stage presence will become more apparent and powerful? I asked this because every time I rewatch their concert videos, 2016-2019, Jungkook solo stage performance is not that impressive, especially on his song Begin and Euphoria, it's kinda boring and generic? I know that what I said is kinda mean and bad, but I just want to be honest. He is my bias, but sadly, that's what I feel every time he goes solo. Nothing special, as if there's no passion and effort that can be seen on him😶☹️
Also, I read about what you said on the other anon, that you think Jungkook will have more tendency that can put a greater performance other than the members, and I disagree with it. I strongly believe that Jimin and J-Hope are the ones that you can really say that they are great performers, and can really pull off the solo career or their solo stage performance.
Jimin's performance is mesmerizing and tantalizing, and J-Hope's performance is energetic and uplifting. His stage presence is 🔥🔥🔥🔥. I really think that these two are the ones that surely will have a successful solo career, like some big artist, unlike what you said that Jungkook is.🥰
Still, I respect your opinion😚
Anon, I'm going to focus a bit more on something that has no direct correlation to what you asked me, but I'll take the opportunity to say it. Just because you don't like the solo songs of your bias (or any other aspect related to them or BTS), doesn't mean it's something bad, or you feeling mean about it. It's perfectly normal. We can't like everything. It doesn't have to be something intense, we shouldn't worship these people. As long as we talk about it respectfully, there's nothing wrong with it. Yeah, I also think Begin is a generic song and I don't really listen to it, never have, except in the beginning when I tried to listen to all I could find. And I like Jungkook as well. So what? We don't even need to come up with some elaborate explanation, sometimes you don't like a song and that's it. (Sorry for the rant, but I see this all the time and I don't think it's helpful. The idea of having to like everything is influenced by the fandom, so there's that)
As to what you specifically asked, I think Jungkook did a good job in 2020 and I was really pleased with his performances during the ON:E online concert in October. The Begin stage may be generic, but My Time wasn't, as it was a more mature performance. I can't say much about 2021, if I were to talk about Butter and PTD. There's nothing impressive there or for any members to make their mark. I watched the Permission to Dance concert. In the online version it seemed that he didn't have the usual energy on stage that we were used to seeing before the pandemic, but it wasn't just him, but all of them. As to the offline concert, it was a little better, but taken as a whole, not impressive. Basically 2021 was a year in which Jungkook didn't get some opportunity to stand out so it's hard for me to say something about his performance.
I know I said that Jungkook is the first that comes to mind, but that doesn't mean he's the only one, don't get me wrong. Of course J-Hope could have a successful solo career. He has the stage presence, he's a good producer and it seems like the kind of guy who would do well outside BTS. Jimin as well, I loved his Serendipity stage, but somehow I see him more in a group formation. Not necessarily that he is only good for BTS (he is one of the members who mentioned multiple times that he wants to be in the group for a long time and rarely talks about solo plans), he could do it by himself, or maybe in a 3J group? I think those 3 work together so well and they have what it takes to do stage performances full of choreographies. I wish I could see more of it.

I shouldn’t waste my time on this, but to those complaining about Butter winning best dance performance, do you actually know the choreography? A dance doesn’t need to be full of jumps and floor thrusts or whatever. Butter is one of the most unique choreographies BTS have, and despite not being on the same level as ON, Idol, Black Swan, etc., it’s probably one of their best choreos. Butter is a bit minimalist, but so elegant and fresh. It fits the song and the concept of their comeback perfectly, as a dance should, and also highlights the members’ individual charms. It’s playful and creative, and does everything a dance is supposed to do and more. Butter, unlike a lot of bg songs, it’s a bit too slow to have a very powerful choreo, but delivers plenty of energy. Butter is far from undeserving of an award for best performance - I’m obviously not talking about sales here, but the actual dance.
Of the songs nominated for best male group dance performance, Ready to Love is pretty cool, but kinda standard; Thunderous has some cool bits - Han’s part with the hand (you know what I mean), and the part where Changbin and Hyunjin jump on their members’ backs - but the more I watch it, the more repetitive and underwhelming it starts to feel, plus the execution is lacking a bit because Stray Kids are strong dancers in general but no one stands out much; Don’t Call Me is the only dance that could beat Butter, but not really... I love Don’t Call Me more than anyone - more than Butter - it’s probably a better song apart from the stupid fucking lyrics SM always gives their groups. The piano part in Don’t Call Me, that part where they dance in a circle, Taemin’s bridge, the ending pose... amazing 10/10. But I literally just watched the Studio Choom performance video and it is not better than Butter, in any way. Apart from Taemin and Key (who probably “overdances” a bit imo), and the parts I just mentioned, Minho’s solo part is awkward as hell, and the performance isn’t, overall, as charming, polished or appealing as Butter. If you watch Don’t Call Me and Butter back to back, you’ll see that while Don’t Call Me is more energetic, as well as “fuller”, the choreography is very heavy handed at times, and executed a bit clumsily without much grace or charisma (especially the pre-chorus and chorus). In Shinee’s defense, it was their first comeback in years. It’s also a very standard bg choreography with a few flashy moves and normal formations. Butter on the other hand...
Butter is done in a way that the members’ shortcomings are hidden and the choreography keeps you on your toes.. The dance flows naturally and never feels either too empty or too much. No one looks awkward or out of place, each moves fits the lyrics and the beat perfectly, BTS look polished and relaxed. In particular, the dance break is beautifully simple but appealing and original - sexy in an obvious yet cheeky way; Jimin’s part when V sings is a bit unnecessary, but so cool, and transitions so well into JK’s “bad”; also, the part after JK’s “bad” is awesome, as is the smooth like butter move after Suga’s rap and the way they ride the beat; the interpretations of looking in the mirror, being a criminal undercover, sidestepping to the beat, and “talk is cheap” are so creative and fun, the spelling of ARMY is so unique too. I don’t know why people insist on this narrative, but Butter is a fucking good choreography. Just because Butter is an English song and the dance is a bit low profile, doesn’t mean it’s not good. Butter isn’t Dynamite or PTD (and PTD’s choreo is also good anyway). You know how fans defend gg choreos by saying it’s not all about powerful moves, synchronization and making things look easy is hard, yada yada yada... well, where’s that same energy when it comes to bg choreos which don’t fit the mold?
PS: I know the 3J choreo is not part of the official Butter choreo, but did you see how good it was? And BTS performed Butter while singing live. I’m pretty sure Don’t Call Me wasn’t performed live with choreo even once.
PPS: ITZY are absolutely better performers than Aespa, but Next Level has a really cool choreography that fits the song perfectly and is well executed. I prefer MITM and Loco but I also love the songs more, plus ITZY often sing live so their performances are more dynamic and they’re better dancers. Next Level is not really unworthy of “best dance” imo. I think ITZY’s performances can look quite messy due to the different skill levels the members have and how tricky some of their moves are, but Aespa always look very polished when performing. A good execution is as important as the dance itself...
