The Yuan-ti as a broad concept is full of interesting potential. However, Wizards of the Coastā€™s approach to the concept is heavily steeped in racism against Indigenous peoples of what is today considered Latin Americaā€”especially in particular, the Maya. The goal of this rewrite is to retain the Mayan coding while being more respectful of the real life people inspiration is drawn from.
An important note: While I am an Indigenous person myself, I am not specifically Mayan; Iā€™m Miā€™kmaw. As such, if there is any Mayan person reading this who has critique of my work, please feel free to express it, as I would greatly appreciate this.
My source of canon lore is the 5E books, Voloā€™s Guide to Monsters and Monsters of the Multiverse. I also took a little bit from the fanmade Forgotten Realms wiki, which as far as Iā€™m able to judge, mostly consists of 3E lore.

My Hero Academia vs Assassination Classroom: Becoming Teachers
Now I recently saw a post going on about how people dislike Deku becoming a teacher in chapter 430. And another user chalked it up to Westerners' disrespect for teachers vs Japan's great revere for them, plus shipping discourse
And while I feel that those definitely don't help, I do feel that that isn't the balk of why a lot of us hate it. It also reads as one of those elitist takes in fandom where they are talking down to those who don't agree with them
Now I'm a Westerner, and I hate Deku becoming a teacher. It's not because I don't respect teachers, and when it happened in Assassination Classroom I was all for Nagisa Shiota becoming a teacher. I would have preferred to see him and/ or Karma become assassins but I was still satisfied with how it ended. So why is that? Especially because we know Hori was a fan of Assassination Classroom, prototype Bakugou was based on Karma for crying out loud.
Achieved vs Happenstance
A big part of it is framing, everyone in 1A, 1B, and basically everyone else explicitly want to be heroes, or at least something adjacent to it. That's why they are in the hero course, and Izuku Midoriya especially has a one-track mind for heroes until the surprise reveal. He was constantly told no, pick something else, for a decade but was still hyper-focused on being a hero leading up to the show. Nor do we see or otherwise learn that he has other developing interests. There's a ton of fanfics and headcanons of him helping his classmates with school work or even just their quirks, but there's nothing in canon. The only character who does anything like that is Momo Yaoyorozu. The vast majority of 1A and once again especially Izuku Midoriya are only interested in being heroes. Izuku is also the only one who didn't become a hero (until years later) despite the need for them totally going down and them being paid per arrest.
Meanwhile, no one in 3E the end class, chose to be an assassin, Kuro Sensei just decided that he was going to teach that class, and the world needed him dead. A lot of students explicitly have other interests and none of them have a personal interest in being an assassin past killing Kuro Sensei. Yes, Nagisa Shiota is shown throughout to be surprisingly good at assassination work, and he is explicitly given an offer to join the world as an assassin. But when he gets the offer he asks himself do I really want to do this. We also learn via the little girl who suggests the career to him in the first place, that he has been tutoring her. We also get to see how he takes the uniqueness and skills from 3E into his teaching job.
So in short the premise of Assassination Classroom is much better suited to have it's characters enter very different fields to begin with.
Better Focus on Academics
Yes, My Hero Academia takes place largely in a school, but they don't put any focus on the school part. Whenever they're doing something in class it's either big combat test or self-directed training. And in the later seasons, more and more time got taken up by the big-name pro-hero fights. The two teachers we see the most of, both have bad teacher tags on Ao3 and I have seen numerous takedowns of their teaching skills accurately citing the series.
Assassination Classroom however has school and studying as a constant theme throughout the series. We see 1E being taught both standard school stuff, and learning various assassination techniques to achieve their goal. Kuro Sensei also makes it very clear that if they are just going to bank their futures on killing him and winning the money, then he sees no point in staying around for them to do it.
Getting it Regardless vs Earning Respect
One ongoing issue I have with MHA is that I largely got into the series because I thought that it was going to criticize societal issues. Instead, it ended up doing a 180. Now this mostly applies to the pro-hero worship, largely because once again there is barely any time dedicated to the actual academic part of the show. But with both the teachers and pro heroes their failures and shit behaviours aren't treated as reasons to lose respect, making any respect for them empty. This also leans into the very real issue of roles that come with unconditional respect, will attract people who will abuse it.
Meanwhile, 3E came into the show without this innate revere for teachers, because their past teachers especially in their school have actively screwed them over at every turn. Karma is even elated at the idea of killing a teacher after his last one betrayed him. Nagisa Shiota was being very blatantly abused at home, and Kuro Sensei is the first teacher to stand up for him. The teachers of 3E have to earn the students' trust and respect. When Bitch Sensei treats them like shit when she first joins, the students return the favour, she has to apologize for her poor behaviour for the class to give her a second chance. So when it ends with the students having a deep connection to their teachers and a renewed appreciation for school it's because that respect was fucking earned. Also, the principal who created this system set up 3E to be abused and sabotaged them every chance he got, got fired for his shit leadership aka actions have consequences. They also didn't feel the need to excuse the bullies shit behaviour either
So in one setting, we have authority figures constantly being shit but being revered anyway. And the other, where the respect has been lost and needs to be earned back, thus the respect they get has a much stronger foundation.
Side notes
Deku sucks at explaining, I've said it both on my main and AU blog, but Deku is horrible at explaining. One of the main aspects of teaching, and he sucks at it because he overcomplicates and goes off on tangents, plus mumbling. If it was just his thought process, it would be a mildly annoying but harmless habit, but he does it when talking to people
Also, Assassination Classroom has a way less bloated cast, allowing us to actually get closer to the characters.

Yandere Psychosophy/Attitudinal Psyche
Inspired by yandere MBTI and yandere Big Five. Personality test/self-assessment for this Google document verison of this
Overview
This is a yandere typing system based on the original Psychosophy (also remade as Attitudinal Psyche) system. Originally, it was divided into four aspects: logic, physics, emotions, and volition/will.
These placements are divided into another four placements: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. The 1st placement is characterized by absolute, possibly even arrogant, confidence in that aspect and feeling no need to improve or change it. It is very rigid and unchangeable. The 2nd placement, on the other hand, is the most flexible placement. It is characterized by confidence but not arrogance, feeling little weakness in this aspect. To the user of the 2nd function, it is comfortable and easy to use with others and develop further. But the 3rd placement is the opposite. It is the most uncomfortable to use, with a constant feeling of insecurity associated with it. There seem to be two most common approaches to this function: aggressively overusing it or the opposite, neglecting it. This is the placement that needs the most improvement. Finally, the 4th placement is the most underused and is seen by its user as either unimportant or better with a quick fix. These four placements form the foundation of understanding an individual's strengths, weaknesses, and areas for potential growth within this typology system.
In summary...
1st placement: Confident Function (1V, 1L, 1E, 1P) Strong, Aggressive, Monologue
2nd placement: Flexible Function (2V, 2L, 2E, 2P) Strong, Passive, Dialogue
3rd placement: Insecure Function (3V, 3L, 3E, 3P) Weak, Aggressive, Dialogue
4th placement: Unbothered Function (4V, 4L, 4E, 4P) Weak, Passive, Monologue
Yandere System
So what about the yandere system? It follows the same placement rules as the original system but uses its own aspects. The yandere Psychosophy system is divided into four four aspects, respectively: cognition (C), aggression (A), expression (E), and determination (D).
Cognition, equivalent to logic in the original Psychosophy system, reflects how a yandere processes information, plans their actions, and uses their intelligence to manage their obsession.
Aggression, equivalent to physics in the original Psychosophy system, evaluates how a yandere uses power, intimidation, or violence to get what they want or control their darling.
Expression, equivalent to emotion in the original Psychosophy system, focuses on how freely a yandere shows their affection and obsession for their darling.
Finally, determination, equivalent to volition/will in the original Psychosophy system, assess how either determined or fragile a yandere is in achieving their goals with their darling.
Placement Descriptions
Cognition (C)
1st Placement (C1): Exhibits absolute confidence in their ability to strategize and plan. This yandere is highly analytical and methodical, always staying several steps ahead. They see no need for improvement in their cognitive abilities and are often seen as calculating masterminds.
2nd Placement (C2): Confident and comfortable in their cognitive abilities, they can adapt plans fluidly and are skilled at thinking on their feet. They are open to developing their strategic thinking further and are effective planners who work well with others.
3rd Placement (C3): Struggles with insecurity regarding their cognitive skills. They might oscillate between overanalyzing situations to compensate for their perceived shortcomings or neglecting planning altogether. This yandere needs the most improvement in how they process information and strategize.
4th Placement (C4): Minimally engaged in strategic thinking, often relying on intuition or others for planning. They see detailed planning as unimportant and prefer quick fixes or spontaneous actions.
Aggression (A)
1st Placement (A1): Extremely confident in using aggression and violence to achieve their goals. They are unyielding and often intimidate or overpower others without hesitation. Improvement is seen as unnecessary as they view their aggressive approach as highly effective.
2nd Placement (A2): Uses aggression when necessary but with restraint and control. They are comfortable leveraging their power but prefer to balance it with other methods. Open to refining their approach, they effectively combine intimidation with strategic non-violent tactics.
3rd Placement (A3): Feels insecure about their use of aggression. They may either overuse violence in an attempt to assert control or avoid it altogether out of fear or uncertainty. Developing a balanced approach to aggression is crucial for them.
4th Placement (A4): Rarely resorts to violence or intimidation, viewing it as a last resort. They prefer non-aggressive methods and see aggression as unimportant or something to be avoided. They often look for quick, peaceful solutions.
Expression (E)
1st Placement (E1): Highly expressive, openly displaying their emotions and obsession with intense fervor. They are unapologetically passionate, showing no need to alter their expressive nature. Their overt emotional displays are a core part of their identity.
2nd Placement (E2): Comfortable and confident in showing their emotions, they balance expressiveness with control. They can openly share their feelings and are adept at adjusting their emotional displays to suit different situations. They find it easy to develop and fine-tune their emotional expression.
3rd Placement (E3): Struggles with expressing emotions, feeling insecure about their displays of affection or obsession. They may either overexpress in an attempt to compensate or hide their emotions entirely. Improving their emotional expressiveness is a key area for growth.
4th Placement (E4): Minimally expressive, often appearing detached or indifferent. They see emotional displays as unnecessary and prefer to keep their feelings hidden. Quick, minimal expressions are preferred, avoiding deep emotional involvement.
Determination (D)
1st Placement (D1): Exhibits unshakeable determination and willpower. This yandere is relentless and unwavering in their pursuit of goals, seeing no need to alter their approach. They possess a strong sense of purpose and are highly driven.
2nd Placement (D2): Confident and adaptable in their determination, they pursue goals with a balanced approach. They can persist through challenges while remaining flexible. Open to enhancing their resolve, they effectively combine willpower with adaptability.
3rd Placement (D3): Feels insecure about their determination, often fluctuating between intense bursts of willpower and periods of doubt. They may either push themselves excessively or give up easily. Developing a consistent and confident approach to their goals is essential.
4th Placement (D4): Exhibits low determination, often relying on external factors or others to drive their actions. They see strong willpower as unimportant, preferring to go with the flow or avoid direct confrontation. Quick, minimal efforts are favored over sustained determination.
Possible Types

3e: Eberron is A World Of Locks
Hey, do you know the world of Eberron?
Eberron is, in my opinion, probably the best setting Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 ever had. This is partly because of what it presents as available, with its world-native Changelings and Warforged. Another part of it is that it was (at the time) a fresh world which wasnā€™t already filled edge to edge with Important NPCs you needed to recognise and respect and route around, which like it or not, is one of the predominant things about the Forgotten Realms that stands out in my memory. Thereā€™s a wealth of ways players can anchor themselves in that world, with its recent civil war, its dragonmarked houses, and its various discarded, collapsed empires. Thereā€™s a lot of stuff to interact with, a lot of means to have a place in that world.
In addition to all that though is an interesting addition to the world that may be a bit less obvious because of how it changed a 3.5 D&D skill in the context of the whole world, and made room for characters who were in a way, trickier.
That is, Disable Device.
If youā€™re not overly familiar with the way the skill system of 3e D&D, it was a point-based system where your class informed how many skill points you got each level, plus more for your intelligence and plus more for weird extra reasons. These skills then added to your ability scores as appropriate; to jump required Strength, to Hide required Dexterity, all that sort of thing. Sometimes you got advantages based on traits about your culture, like your size or your gross physical qualities, sometimes you had cultural background advantages. Itā€™s like how Elves got a bonus to Listen, Search, and Spot, while Dwarves got a skill bonus to who cares, theyā€™re dwarves.
The skill system was elaborate in a way that didnā€™t usually wind up producing necessary results. This is a structure that often gets referred to as fiddly. It was worth having 5 skill ranks in a skill you didnā€™t plan on using because of how it improved another skill, but also that didnā€™t necessarily matter most of the time, meaning there was a sort of budgetary exchange that once you got it, kind of just dangled there. It also had the weird effect where skills spread out across a bunch of things ā€“ being good at jumping, riding, and climbing were all different skills even though fundamentally, those were kinda the same thing and reasonably, being better at any of them would make you a bit better at all of them.
There were some skills that were fantastically specific, like decipher script (that could be used to uh, decipher scripts), or very broad like use magic device (which could fake all sorts of nonsense and work as a skill check for making almost any kind of spell available to the people with the skill). And in this space there was a skill that served to show how skills could be setting specific.
In conventional D&D, high fantasy worlds like Greyhawk, machinery was okay-but-not-worth-it. Disable Device largely lived as a sort of ā€˜pick locksā€™ skill, which was usually useful for disabling traps in a dungeon delving environment, or opening doors you didnā€™t have access to. These two applications steadily became less and less important as magical ways to open locks and close them show up starting as the players level up into the higher level material of level 3. At around that point, the capacity of Disable Device to meaningfully address a need of the party becomes somewhat token, as you can use Knock to bust magical and nonmagical doors and locks, and traps start becoming magical and therefore, best addressed with spells and spellcraft.
Itā€™s a shame too because in terms of an actual skill, like ā€˜a thing people can doā€™ Disable Device is pretty cool. It indicates a skill and thoughtfulness that seems like it should be applicable to more things. Toolkits were sometimes connected to the skill, armour repair sometimes but the actual craft of being good with devices was orphaned for its impact in the world and its application to adventurers with a degree of experience.
Welcome to Eberron then, where everything is high magic, sure, but the magic is used to catapult past the industrial revolution. This is a look you may know as Magepunk (which I think is reasonable to use as a term for describing my own setting, Cobrinā€™Seil). In Eberron, there are trains. There are machines. There are devices that people use in their everyday life, and with that comes a more widespread vision of the applications of disable device.
Now, this isnā€™t to say that Iā€™ve grabbed the entirety of the Eberron compendium and dug through it for every single time Disable Device is used for every kind of system or interface. But rather that I know, as a GM, in that world, when people are surrounded by trains and chains and industrialised components, and the creation at the scale that suddenly, you didnā€™t need to consider things like unique, individualised magical creations to keep things safe or secure or operate things.
This has an effect of turning most forms of leaders and threats, people who have spaces that players want to approach and interact with, suddenly donā€™t have to answer a kind of outsourcing question. If magic is what makes a place dangerous, the people who command dangerous places are going to trend towards being magical. Wizards are the ones who have menageries and laboratories and fancy alchemy stations and whatnot, and those are the things that sites tended to need.
Except if suddenly, locks and tools and machinery exist that mean that you can have a site-based challenge that cares about material components without necessarily everything being a bespoke magical construction, and that means that suddenly the boss that runs this place isnā€™t the wizard who makes it work, but instead the person who has the power, the means, and the access to construct that sort of space.
Disable Device becomes more useful as a game tool, but also, the world is a place that allows more people to have access to the status of being a kind of ā€˜boss monsterā€™ character at the end of a characterā€™s narrative. And thatā€™s all through the transformation of the world-centering power of characters.
High fantasy, unconsciously or not, directs all the attention towards the wizard.
Which is a pretty sad trick.

Webcomics at Day 100 #10: The Order of the Stick
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pages read: 9/25/2003 ā€“ 4/4/2006 (books 1&2; 301 full page strips)
Reason for selection: D&D is really important to nerd culture (and online culture since 3e), and this is probably the most popular and longrunning D&D webcomic, to this day loved, followed and theorized on by a large fanbase.
Current status: Ongoing with no set schedule, averaging twice monthly updates. Creator Rich Burlew says the current book will be the last, but fans predict the arc will not end until 2031 or later.
Content warnings: frequent misogyny, sexualization of female characters, equating sex and gender, occasional transphobia, sexual humor, occasional jokes about sexual assault and harassment, one joke about slavery, extreme amounts of cartoon violence
Overall thoughts:
I am definitely the target audience for Order of the Stick. As a long time D&D player who also enjoys hearing about games I didnā€™t play in and likes webcomics as a medium, itā€™s not surprising that I fell in love with this very quickly, because Iā€™m the exact type of person itā€™s being written for. As such, itā€™s hard to analyze whether itā€™s easy for non-D&D players to get into.
D&D references appear in the majority of strips, typically to 3.5e ā€“ the edition released shortly before the comicā€™s debut, which almost entirely dictates the charactersā€™ abilities and the rules of the world they live in. Most references are still relevant to more recent editions, and the comic riffs on random encounters, initiative order, attacks of opportunity, momentary in-game retcons after remembering an extra feature or skill bonus after the fact, timeskips during travel, rogues stealing from party members leading to intraparty conflict, the ā€˜all PCs have dead parentsā€™ backstory stereotype, and especially alignment.
The entirety of book two, ā€˜No Cure for the Paladin Bluesā€™ (so named because it features a paladin dressed in blue), explores alignment in more depth than the occasional jokes surrounding the other topics. Roy, an honorable leader who has sworn an oath but isnā€™t a paladin by class, and Miko, who is a true paladin and follows her orderā€™s rules to the letter, come to blows over the meaning of ā€˜goodā€™ and ā€˜lawfulā€™, whether intent or outcome determine a personā€™s alignment, and what it means to live in a world where alignment is objective, codified, and detectable. These are ideas that later D&D editions will also question, but not as efficiently as secondary character Celia, a sylph defense lawyer, does in a literal courtroom scene in comic 282.
The D&D references range from these blatant ones, to the more subtle. To zoom in on a moment I loved, strip 214 features a moment where Miko ā€“ a party ally, who would be controlled by the DM in a real game ā€“ goes against the partyā€™s planned stealth ambush and barges into an ogre camp to confront the leader. This would be really bad D&D etiquette in most games, as a DM would be taking agency away from the players, not allowing them to even attempt a plan theyā€™d worked hard on. But it works well as comic writing, because it characterizes Miko and sets up a new three-way conflict between her, the party, and the ogres.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Establishing characterization is much easier with D&D ability scores and spell lists to lean back on, but Burlew has never made official character sheets for the party to allow the story to come first. Instead, Burlew uses common player character archetypes ā€“ a respectable human fighter/party leader avenging his father, a Scottish dwarf cleric who likes ale and canā€™t roll stealth, an androgynous elf mage who prefers learning about the limits of arcane potential to social interaction, an annoying, pretty, constantly singing and talking when he shouldnā€™t bard (who surprised me by being dumb instead of horny), a treasure-obsessed crackshot rogue, and a chaos gremlin. XP and level up mechanics provide an easy, in universe reason for characters developing new powers.
I found most characters quickly likeable, except for the chaos gremlin ā€“ halfling ranger Belkar is the partyā€™s evil member, generally played for comic relief. However, as the overarching plot is introduced as early as strip 13, and other characters are given two dimensions and ethical beliefs within the first hundred strips, Belkarā€™s being loved by the party of relatively decent people despite his selfish, violent and amoral actions (stated outright in strip 285) feels out of place and unearned to me. His misogyny and sexual harassment of female characters, also played for laughs, really contributes to this ā€“ itā€™s hard to overlook, especially as itā€™s reflected by the author.
Burlew falls into common pitfalls when writing female characters ā€“ for example, a woman only being taken seriously when she is competent and can out-perform the men, a man needing to experience being treated like a woman in order to respect one, and regularly referring to women as ā€˜bitchesā€™, ā€˜whoresā€™, and ā€˜chicksā€™. In 2015, Burlew said that he has few regrets about his early work, but that they include ā€˜[u]nintentional sexism and/or insensitivity to gender issues. Doing my best to fix it going forward.ā€™ This acknowledgement is important to my decision to keep reading.
[Note on next paragraph, added later: I have now been informed that Vaarsuvius is canonically genderqueer, confirmed later in the comic! huge win for representation and on Burlew incorporating reader feedback & thanks to the anon who let me know!!]
Against all odds, the wizard of unspecified gender Vaarsuvius is actually written fairly well. The ambiguity is often treated as a joke, and minor characters will sometimes assume their gender one way or the other ā€“ but the other main characters donā€™t know and are okay with not knowing. Theyā€™re respectful and donā€™t question it when Vaarsuvius doesnā€™t use the gendered dungeon toilets, and while Vaarsuvius shares a room with female party member Haley at inns while the men all share a second room, strip 225 makes it clear that this is because Haley and V are good friends, not because they share a gender. (As a sidenote, Haley and Vā€™s sweet and unlikely friendship is my favorite dynamic in the comic).
Artistically, the characters are drawn as stick figures (as represented by the comicā€™s title) with clean lines and bright colors in strips that are typically one A4 page. The first OOTS book was printed in February 2005, with further books released after each major story arc, so Burlew has written the bulk of this comic knowing that it will be collected in print. Likely, this influences the decision to mostly stick to the A4 style, and rarely include oddly shaped strips, animation, hyperlinks, hover text, or other web-specific elements. Important story beats and milestones do see extra-long strips, with the 200th strip covering a long-foreshadowed battle four times as long as a regular strip ā€“ with white space indicating the page breaks. Strips may play with panel order while keeping the A4 format, such as comic 242, which uses arrows to indicate that panels should be read vertically, not horizontally.
Character designs are extremely recognizable from the first strip, and the art style gets slowly more complex ā€“ while the stick figures remain, backgrounds grow more detailed and shading is introduced over time. With the early strips, the art in print books is (allegedly) an improvement over the web versions, an incentive to buy print copies when the full archive is available for free online.
Most characters speak in white speech bubbles with black text, but there are exceptions ā€“ core villain Xykon the lich has black speech bubbles with white text, creatures of pure light have yellow speech bubbles, sylpha and ghosts have blue, and a bastion of lawful good order has red. Lowered opacity speech bubbles with dashed outlines indicate whispering, and (in a more questionable choice) bold lower case speech indicates a character has low intelligence. The different colors are effective at making characters from other planes feel truly alien, and the importance of the speech bubbles reflects the wordiness of the comic ā€“ the text is small, speech bubbles are often paragraphs, and even zoomed into 150% I ended up with a bad screen headache after a couple hoursā€™ reading, which makes an archive binge much harder.
OOTS has a reputation for beginning as humorous and becoming more serious and story driven in its third and fourth books. I havenā€™t reached those yet so canā€™t compare, but I already find that while jokes are frequent, the story takes precedence when necessary ā€“ and like other comics Iā€™ve read, even Burlew seems surprised at how quickly the strip becomes something beyond its original intentions, letting a character say ā€˜Wow. Thatā€™s a lot more planning than I thought this strip hadā€™ as early as strip 60. However, he also says that having the characters leave the dungeon and take on a bigger quest in strip 122 was partly because he ā€˜was leaving a lot of good jokes on the table by never having them go to town or on a wilderness adventureā€™, so the ā€˜plot drivenā€™ and ā€˜joke focusedā€™ drives are coexisting then. Iā€™m really excited to see how the tone and story develop over the next thousand strips. :D
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Relevance to Homestuck:
As best I can tell, thereā€™s no official connection, though there is fanbase overlap. Iā€™ve said before that Homestuck is a precursor to actual play podcasts, and plan to write more about that someday. In its case, Andrew Hussie clearly acts as DM with the command-submitting readers acting as players; D&D mechanics arenā€™t used, but the dynamic is spot on.
In Order of the Stick, the characters referencing movies, modern slang, current events and 21st century professions is extremely reminiscent of real D&D play, as this sort of humor is common to both regular D&D groups and actual play shows like Acquisitions Incorporated and The Adventure Zone. A pair of lawyers sent by ā€˜the spooky wizard who lives by the coastā€™ are introduced in strip 32 and become recurring characters, a reference to Wizards of the Coast, the real world company who owns D&D. The same is true of characters mentioning exposition, sidequests, plotlines, character mirrors, and other concepts that D&D players know about, and therefore put into their charactersā€™ mouths in games.
OOTS characters feel like they have players and the strip captures the experience of the gaming table really well, but readers donā€™t have much influence, and Burlew is taking on all roles. This is true even when they contradict, like in strip 21, where the characterā€™s actions of killing a chimera go against the DMā€™s plans to have him be a recurring villain.
Like Homestuck, OOTS begins as a fairly small scale story ā€“ taking place in a single dungeon ā€“ but expands within a couple of years to include threats not just to the world, but to the very fabric of reality. In a couple of very minor parallels, both feature the dunce cap (HS 746/OOTS 14), the 8 ball (HS 804/OOTS 127), and a plot important meteor (HS 196/OOTS 134). Meteors seem like a surprisingly common feature of webcomics, actually, and I wonder if this was a big part of 2000s culture that I donā€™t remember. OOTS has a minor character, Banjo the Clown God of Puppets, who appears in several strips including 80 (regular Banjo) and 85 (as the eldritch Banjulhu). His mysterious and unsettling appearances are reminiscent of Lil Cal, and his tentacles of Roseā€™s eldritch doll. I could also discuss Kickstarters here but I think Iā€™ll save that for a few years down the line.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Scholar Gabriel Romaguera wrote his masterā€™s thesis and part of his PhD thesis on Order of the Stick. Iā€™ve read his masterā€™s thesis in full and really enjoyed his analysis, which is far more comprehensive than my own (though as a sidenote, I do genuinely hope to write a masterā€™s thesis on Homestuck someday). Heā€™s only one scholar, but a lot of his analysis links up with the limited Homestuck analysis Iā€™ve read. Romaguera discusses serial vs archival reading, web vs print versions, and whether the OOTS books can be considered a webcomic.
ā€˜Some of the material is only relevant when read within twenty four hours of the original publication... Readers are supposed to wait for new installments, read them, go over to the forums, reread them to make sure th+at no detail was left unnoticed, speculate what would happen, and continue to wait until the new issue is published and then the cycle continues. This process makes for a deeper connection to the narrative and to the characters as years go by.ā€™ (Romaguera, p.138)
This argument is presented uncritically and unproductively, just as it has been by many Homestuck analysts. While itā€™s technically true for any serial work, it becomes more true when participation in an active fan community of theorizers, proofreaders, lorekeepers and fanwork producers is seen as critical to understanding the work. From some time browsing the forums, this is definitely true of both OOTS and Homestuck moreso than other webcomics. (Itā€™s also the attitude that made my lab scientist brain go ā€˜okay, cool theory, but have you tested that experimentally?ā€™) Romaguera goes on to say that ongoing webcomics could be taught in classrooms when teaching students about serial narratives as ā€˜[t]he serial reading experience is often taught in hindsight and with nostalgia that suggests that current readers have missed out on the original text as it was intended to be read.ā€™ (p.151) I agree and I love this idea more than words can say.
ā€˜This effectively makes OOTS an ongoing trans-media narrative, wherein some parts of the narrative are exclusive to one medium, and some parts are exclusive to the another one [sic]. Readers go through the process of piecing these parts together to make this third text and thus fully attain the narrative. Still, this practice only goes on until Burlew publishes the final book and all of the narrative is collected in one authoritative text.ā€™ (Romaguera, p.139-40)
In most webcomics (including Homestuck), print editions are supplementary, collectorā€™s content. With OOTS, it seems like both the author and fans give the print editions a lot of importance. Once OOTS is no longer serialized, it does seem likely that the print editions, which include entire books of bonus material not found online, will be seen as fully definitive. Similarly, I would call The Unofficial Homestuck Collection the definitive edition of Homestuck, due to its functional flash player, wealth of supplemental content, and options for reading spoiler free. Ultimately, both these works have transcended their original websites in a way few webcomics have.
Continue reading? I think this is my favorite webcomic Iā€™ve read for this subproject so far. I usually wouldā€™ve read 2009 strips for a comparison, but didnā€™t, because I want to experience the story linearly without spoilers. I could get totally obsessed with this. I want to make D&D character sheets for the beta kids.

Azalin Reviews: Darklord Gwydion
Tumblr media
Domain: Arak/the Shadow Rift Domain Formation: 575 BC; became the Shadow Rift in 740 BC Power Level:šŸ’€šŸ’€šŸ’€šŸ’€šŸ’€ Sources: The Shadow Rift (2e) , Gazetteer V (3e)
Though the Shadow Fey twins Loht and Maeve are the rulers of the Shadow Rift, it is the unseen Gwydion (aka The Sorcerer Fiend aka The Twilight) that earns the title of Darklord of this Domain. Gwydionā€™s true form is unfathomable, cloaked in shadows, squirming tentacles, cloven hooves, eyestalks and pretty much anything you can throw into one eldritch monster.
Gwydionā€™s past is as obscured in shadows as Gwydion himself. Legends say he was the spawn of the Plane of Shadow, forming out of it like pus from an overgrown boil. Others say he was once a lord of the Abyss, but so great was his power that the other Abyssal lords united in order to banish him into the Plane of Shadow. It is always wise to remember that legends are told and maintained by those that hold power and though there may be some truth in these tales, the whole truth has yet to be uncovered. There is no denying the immense, near god-like power Gwydion holds. A pity he cannot lift a single tentacle to use it these days. Gwyidion drew the ellefolk into the Plane of Shadows for he required subjects to obey, adore, and respect him. For what is it to rule without adoration? To subjugate them to him, Gwydion infused the ellefolk with darkness from his realm and transformed them into the Shadow Fey. The first born of the Shadow Fey were the Erlkingā€™s children, Loht and Maeve.
Gwydion named the Erlking, Arak, as his seneschal and commanded the Shadow Fey to create a massive Obsidian Gate so he could travel to other worlds and conquer new people and lands. Gwydionā€™s reasoning for doing so amount to a massive ego and extreme boredom. Fear drove the Shadow Fey to abide by their Masterā€™s commands. Secretly, however, with Arak leading them, they plotted against Gwydion. After centuries of work, the Obsidian Gate was complete and Gwydion directed his armies to pass through it to begin his subjugation of whatever world lay beyond. Foolish, really, to plan to lay siege against the unknown, but for a near god, Gwydion does not possess much in the way of foresight.
As they passed through the gate, Gwydion began to realize it was not his armies, but the Shadow Fey under the illusionary magic of their mages and they were escaping him in mass. Descending upon his wayward people, Gwydion found his path blocked by Arak who had donned his Regalia. This Regalia is made up of nine different magical items and granted Arak enough power to stand against Gwydion until the last of his people fled through the gate, but not nearly enough to defeat him. It also grants the one wearing the Regalia the power to open the Obsidian Gate. For a brief moment, Arak found an opening and pushing Gwydion backwards, Arak ran to the gate. But just as Arak was inches away from his own freedom, Gwydion disintegrated the Erlking with a blast of energy. Though Arak did not survive to make it through the gate, his Regalia did.
The Regalia landed at the feet of Maeve and Loht. Loht was overcome with fear at his fatherā€™s demise, but Maeve held her ground and sealed the Gate before Gwydion could escape.
Despite all his power, Gwydion is mostly impotent; stuck in a vast nothingness between worlds. Though he has shown himself capable of influencing the Shadow Fey from his prison within a prison.
He influenced the events that led to Tristessaā€™s death and the Scourging of the Arak. He influenced Prince Loht of the Unseelie Court to believe his father was still trapped within the Obsidian Gate. When Loht opened the gate, Gwydion nearly escaped before Arakā€™s Crown was thrown within sealing Gwydion away once more. He almost escaped again during the Grand Conjunction, which resulted in his Domain pushing G'henna and Markovia out of The Core and the Arak becoming the Shadow Rift
If Gwydion was ever to escape it may make the ramblings of Bastion Teodorus Raines of the Church of Ezra in Nevuchar Springs, whom Iā€™ve mostly ignored, make some sort of sense. Could Gwydionā€™s coming be the start of the Time of Unparalleled Darkness? Perhaps but I am far more interested in this Gate of his that sits on the footsteps of my Domain.

As Master Joe Wishes - Track 04
Seasonal Team Event - L4mps
Tumblr media
My parts are coming up! Thank you TLWard for letting me work with you!
Tumblr media
Location: Ā HAMA House - Lesson Room
Tumblr media
Ryui: (I donā€™t give a shit if that damn bear is getting targeted. I donā€™t, butā€¦)Ā
(Whatever Toi wants is what I want. Iā€™ll grant any of his wishes, even if I have to go through hell and back for itā€¦!)
Tumblr media
Sakujiro: Ryui-san, youā€™re not bowing low enough! The most respectful bow is at a precise 45 degree angle, you must bend until you can see your feet clearly!Ā
Ryui: Ughā€¦Ā
Sakujiro: Keep going! 56, 57ā€¦Ā
Netaro: I canā€™t do this anymooore~
Tumblr media
Toi: Me neither~
Tumblr media
Nagi:Ā  My lower back is already waving a white flag because Ryui wonā€™t recite the commandmentsā€¦.Ā
Ryui: Aaaaaahhh!! Fuck!!Ā
Sakujiro: Oh dearā€¦ I suppose I can offer you a short respite from your little ā€œbowingā€ punishment.Ā
Nagi: Oofā€¦Ā
Chief: I see nowā€¦ So thatā€™s why Sakujiro-san is giving you special training on servitude?Ā
Toi: I have a feeling this is gonna lead up to a dramatic and heartfelt scenario!
Netaro: Perhaps the Suspension Bridge effect will give birth to many many new couples!Ā
Tumblr media
Netaro and Toi: Ooh~~~~!Ā
Tumblr media
Nagi: Chief, this might get dangerous, so itā€™s best if you donā€™t get involved. This kinda work that involves the 3Es is better suited for someone like meā€¦Ā
Yodaka: I believe they were, ā€œš“”mbrace withoutā€ looking out of place, ā€œš“”xposure to danger is OKā€, and ā€œš“”asily counted on.ā€
Chief: Ohā€¦ To be honest, Iā€™m extremely worried about you guys, but unfortunately, Kafka called me in earlierā€¦ Iā€™ll need to leave for an overseas business trip tomorrow.Ā
Ryui: (He probably figured this was gonna be a dangerous jobā€¦ Iā€™d do the same if I could.)
Yodaka: Not only do we have the police, we even have Danny, the brawn of HAMA Tours, on our side. Iā€™m sure it will be fine.
Tumblr media
Daniel: You can bet Iā€™m gonna apply for that workerā€™s insurance and paid leave after this.
Ryui: ā€”Thereā€™s something I just donā€™t get.
Ryui: We were only asked to escort her, I donā€™t see why we gotta dress up as maids or butlers and blend in as the manorā€™s staff.Ā
Sakujiro: I must disagree.
Ryui: ā€¦ Go on.
Sakujiro: It would be quite unnatural to have multiple unknown faces wandering about the manor out of the blue.Ā
Nagi: Um, then why canā€™t we act as security guards instead?
Sakujiro: We must not give away that Joe-sama is the treasure. Introducing security into the picture would only bring unwanted attention.
Tumblr media
Netaro: Indeedā€¦ Having guards around would only rouse suspicion.Ā
Ryui: Tchā€¦Ā
Sakujiro: Iā€™m certain you understand the necessity of your roles. Now then, let us take a short recess. We shall continue your punishment from the 58th bow.
~~~
Sakujiro: I apologize for disturbing you all during your break time, but I have something that requires your attention.
Nagi: ? Sakujiro-san, you look pretty excited?
Sakujiro: Fufufuā€¦ Was I perhaps too obvious? Please, take a look at these.
Tumblr media
Toi: Wowā€¦! Itā€™s a sketch of butler and maid uniforms!Ā
Sakujiro: The moment I heard that you would all be working at a manor for your next assignment, inspiration welled up within me. Should you find these designs acceptable, it would be an honor to sew them up for you.Ā
Yodaka: These iterations honor the classic designs of old. I think theyā€™re splendid.
Toi: But, Iā€™m a maid? Not a butler?
Sakujiro: I believe being a maid would suit you better.
Ryui: You got that right. Butā€¦ The hell you putting me and Hachinoya in dresses for tooā€¦?Ā
Sakujiro: I believe being a maid would suit you better.
Netaro: Lookie!! Daaā€™s gonna be a maid too!
Tumblr media
Nagi: Woah, I feel like thatā€™s gonna show up in my dreams, somehow.
Daniel: Whateverā€¦ Iā€™d rather wear a maid dress than have to bow down one more timeā€¦Ā
Ryui: An old man like you should know how to stand your fucking ground! Thereā€™s no way in HELL Iā€™m wearing a dress! Iā€™d rather bite my tongue and let it fucking bleed out!
Toi: Ah, if Ani-sama is biting his tongue off then I will tooā€¦!
Netaro: Count me in~
Nagi: Thatā€™s a lot of ā€œTongue-cut Sparrowsā€ā€¦ *
Yodaka: With this responseā€¦ Iā€™m sorry to say, but we should probably shelve that ideaā€¦Ā
Tumblr media
Sakujiro: Understoodā€¦ Boohooā€¦Ā
~~~
Sakujiro: Good work, everyone. Please keep in mind what you learned today. I expect you to become the absolute most perfect servants.
Location: HAMA House 2nd floor
Tumblr media
Ryui: (Ughā€¦ My backā€™s stiff as a boardā€¦)Ā
Sakujiro: Ryui-san, a moment, please.
Ryui: What? I ainā€™t doing any more bows.
Sakujiro: No, I didnā€™t stop you for such a reasonā€¦ I have something I need to share about Joe-sama.
Sakujiro: As I recall, Joe-sama was actually a present that the late madam Brunhild had received from her father at a tender age.Ā
Sakujiro: She must have been treasured greatly as a close companion.
Ryui: ā€¦..
Sakujiro: When a person senses that they are not being valued, that is when they experience true anger. The duty of a servant is to find the true meaning hidden within their masterā€™s demands, and act accordingly.
Ryui: And? Whatā€™s your point?
Sakujiro: Please keep in mind that if you perform insincerely, the other person will know.
Ryui: Yeah yeah, thanks for the warning, or whatever.Ā
Sakujiro: ā€¦..Ā
~~~
Location: Manor - Large Parlor
Hiramei: Good morning everyone! Weā€™re counting on you all for this mission!Ā
Hiramei: Please try to act natural! Samejima-san and I will be checking in on you guys every once in a while!
Ryui: ( ā€“Is what that guy said, butā€¦ )
Location:Ā  Manor - Bedroom
Ryui: What was next again, making the bed? Howā€™s it even getting messed up when thereā€™s only a plushie in hereā€¦Ā
Ryui: ā€“The fuck! The heck you lounginā€™ around for, old man?
Tumblr media
Daniel: My backā€¦ it hurtsā€¦ Itā€™s as stiff as a boardā€¦ Give me a break alreadyā€¦Ā
Ryui: Thatā€™s what you said last time when you were lazinā€™ about on the sofa! For fuckā€™s sake, youā€™re a lost causeā€”
*loud tumbling noises*
Ryui: ā€¦ Who messed up this timeā€¦Ā
Location: Manor - Large Parlor
Tumblr media
Joe: My goodness! What in the world happened for the room to get to this state!
Toi: Wha- The laundry room and corridor are totally covered in foam...!
Tumblr media
Nagi: Iā€™m sorryā€¦ Itā€™s my first time using a washing machine like this, so I put in a random amount of detergent and clicked some random buttons, and this is how it ended upā€¦Ā
Ryui: Ahā€¦ Hachinoyaā€™s technology impairment rears its ugly headā€¦Ā
Yodaka: Joe-sama, pardon us. Weā€™ll clean this up right away, so please overlook this. Nagi, could you bring in the cleaning supplies?
Nagi: Joe-samaā€¦I apologize for my carelessnessā€¦Ā
Tumblr media
*loud tumbling noises*
Joe: W-What in the world is it this time!?
Location: Manor
Tumblr media
Netaro: Hmm. I thought I could grow some fresh veggies for dinner, but I seem to have injected a cell-positive agent instead of a growth promotantā€¦Ā
Tomato Monster: GRRRā€”!
Toi: Wah! Thereā€™s a cluster of man-eating tomatoes with fangs surrounding us!
Joe: The manner in which they gnash their sharp fangs is giving me a fright! I-I fear for my life!
Yodaka: Pardon us, we will promptly harvest them. Netaro, please bring a shovel and a trowel.
Tumblr media
Netaro: Roger that! Joe-sama, sorry about this!
Ryui: (Damn, canā€™t believe Natsume could clean up this mess so fastā€¦ Glad we have him around.)
Ryui: By the way, whyā€™s Joe been on Toiā€™s back this entire time? Youā€™ve even got him using a baby slingā€¦Ā
Toi: Hehe, Iā€™m Joeā€™s nanny right now! Joe-sama, are you comfortable on my back?
Tumblr media
Joe: As expected of my ā€œnursemaid.ā€ I am feeling quite comfortable indeed!
Toi: Ehehe~ Iā€™m glad to hear that.
Ryui: (Well, itā€™s all good if Toiā€™s happy with it.)
Ryui: Joe, you better not work Toi too hard, got it?
Joe: ā€¦..
Joe: My, whyever could it be that you are the only one to show me such disrespectā€¦Ā
Hi!
I'm so glad i found your blog, your deep dives are making my brain tingle in the best of ways! It's so difficult to really find all the info your curious about with the many different editions and histories of everything so you are an absolute lifesaver for understanding all these intruiging lore aspects.
I've been very curious about Asmodeus for a while now but am kinda struggling finding out more about him, I know he's very strong and apparently a large snake?? But I was wondering if you at some point feel the motivation to if you could tell me some about him, he seems so interesting to me and I just wanna know more about who and what he is.
Again, you are so awesome and I vow to devour all your writing!
Asmodeus: An Origin
Thank you so much for the kind words - and for your patience as I worked on this one. If there's any question you had about him that feels like it's not wholly answered here, feel free to let me know! There's still a lot that I was not able to include.
As ever, these writeups will align with current 5e lore, and draw from 3.5e for additional supporting information. On rarer occasions ā€“ and always noted ā€“ I will reference 1e and 2e, but with the caveats that there is much more in those editions that is tonally dissonant with the modern conception of the Forgotten Realms, and thus generally less applicable.
Tumblr media
You would be hard-pressed to find a more succinct introduction to Asmodeus himself than in the following passage, from 3eā€™s Book of Vile Darkness:Ā
Asmodeus the Archfiend, the overlord of all the dukes of hell, commands all devilkind and reigns as the undisputed master of the Nine Hells. Even the deities that call that plane home pay Asmodeus a great deal of respect.Ā¹Ā
As to his current position, 5eā€™s Sword Coast Adventurerā€™s Guide features Asmodeus among the list of gods, naming him the ā€œgod of indulgenceā€, and crediting to him the domains of knowledge and trickery. His symbol is ā€œthree inverted triangles arranged in a long triangleā€, as seen in the image below.Ā²Ā
Tumblr media
While his active circle of worshippers remains small, he is one of the gods habitually turned to by those in need, particularly those who have done something to earn them the displeasure of another god:
After transgressing against a god in some way, a person prays to Asmodeus for something to provide respite during the long wait. Asmodeus is known to grant people what they wish, and thus people pray for all the delights and distractions they desire most from life. Those who transgress in great ways often ask Asmodeus to hide their sins from the gods, and priests say that he will do so, but with a price after death.Ā³
Asmodeus is particularly appealing to those who fear what awaits them after death, or have arrived to find the reality does not match their hopes. For these souls, even the hazards of Baator might be preferable to long centuries of solitary wandering on the Fugue Plane.Ā
All souls wait on the Fugue Plane for a deity's pleasure, which determines where a soul will spend the rest of eternity. Those who lived their lives most in keeping with a deity's outlook are taken first. Others, who have transgressed in the eyes of their favored god or have not followed any particular ethos, might wait centuries before Kelemvor judges where they go. People who fear such a fate can pray to Asmodeus, his priests say, and in return a devil will grant a waiting soul some comfort.Ā³
The worship of Asmodeus attracts staunch individualists, who desire a future unaligned with the domain of any of the other gods, and are willing to choose self-determination in any form that might approach them.
The faithful of Asmodeus acknowledge that devils offer their worshipers a path that's not for everyone ā€” just as eternally basking in the light of Lathander or endlessly swinging a hammer in the mines of Moradin might not be for everyone. Those who serve Asmodeus in life hope to be summoned out of the moaning masses of the Fugue Plane after death. They yearn for the chance to master their own fates, with all of eternity to achieve their goals.Ā³
Asmodeus achieved his current official status of godhood during the Spellplague, which lasted from 1385 to 1395 DR. After this, for reasons he has unsurprisingly chosen not to reveal, he performed a ritual to alter the metaphysical categorization of all existing tieflings, giving them features that highlighted this connection.
Due to this shift, tieflings are often perceived with wariness by those who believe that Asmodeus is able to exert control over these newly-determined ā€œdescendantsā€ of his. While this is an unwarranted suspicion, as tieflings are no more bound to his will than any other individual of another race, the mistrust remains unfortunately pervasive.ā“Ā
The true origins of Asmodeus, particularly from 3rd Edition on, are kept rather ambiguous, seemingly quite by design. This is both for Watsonian reasons ā€“ that a supreme being of evil such as Asmodeus would not carelessly leave information about his origins (and, potentially, weaknesses) floating around ā€“ as well as Doylist: it is a more elegant solution than eternal retcons, and leaves it up to the individual scholar or DM which explanation they ascribe the most veracity to.āµĀ
On the charge of Asmodeusā€™s true form being a giant serpent, we have Chris Pramas to thank for that bit of lore, stated in 2eā€™s 1999 Guide to Hell, but rarely mentioned - and not in any definitive manner - from 3e onward.ā¶ 3eā€™s Manual of the Planes, published in 2001, does reference this account, but as a whispered and shadowy theory about the Archdevil Supreme, rather than objective truth.
Brutally repressed rumors suggest that there is more to Asmodeus than he admits. The story goes that the true form of Asmodeus actually resides in the deepest rift of Nessus called the Serpentā€™s Coil. The shape seen by all the other devils of the Nine Hells in the fortress of Malsheem is actually a highly advanced use of the project image spell or an avatar of some sort. ... From where fell Asmodeus? Was he once a greater deity cast down from Elysium or Celestia, or is he older yet, as the rumor hints? Perhaps he represents some fundamental entity whose mere existence pulls the multiverse into its current configuration. Nobody who tells the story of Asmodeusā€™s ā€œtrueā€ form lives more than 24 hours after repeating it aloud. But dusty scrolls in hard-to-reach libraries (such as Demogorgonā€™s citadel in the Abyss) yet record this knowledge. Unless it is pure fancy, of course.ā·Ā
One can see from the framing of the above excerpt that there is no attempt made at certainty. Perhaps it is mere conjecture, or perhaps a secret, hidden truth that few may know. It is impossible to say for certain.Ā
Another story of Asmodeusā€™s possible origin is found in 3eā€™s Fiendish Codex II. This text, again, does not frame the information given as universal truth, but rather takes pains to emphasize its ambiguity.Ā
The best way to understand devils and their ways is to listen to the stories they tell about themselves. The most famous of these tales have propagated as myths throughout all the worlds of the Material Plane, becoming familiar to mortals of all sorts. But as is often the case with legends, contradictions abound. For example, the tale of the Pact Primeval is the accepted version of the multiverseā€™s creation. But an alternate story claims Asmodeus as the fallen creator of the universe.Ā  Countless cultures have their own versions of the Pact Primeval legend. The names of the deities featured in it change depending on where it is told, but the names of the devils are always the same. Perhaps this fact is what inspired Philogestes, the accursed philosopher of evil, to pen his famous proverb: ā€œThe gods exist in multiplicity, but Asmodeus is unique.ā€ As is the case with any myth worthy of the name, the following tale is true ā€” whether or not it actually happened.āøĀ
In this account, Asmodeus began as a celestial embodiment of law, formed from the concept itself to fight against the embodiment of chaos ā€” demons.ā¹ Over time, as he and his followers became more akin to the enemies they were facing, those celestial beings not engaged in the fight grew leery of what they were becoming, and took him to trial, to account for himself. The god of valor spoke first, laying out the concerns of those gathered against Asmodeus. In response:Ā
Asmodeus smiled, and the smoke of a thousand battlefields rose from his lips. ā€œAs Lord of Battle,ā€ he pointed out, ā€œyou should know better than any that war is a dirty business. We have blackened ourselves so that you can remain golden. We have upheld the laws, not broken them. Therefore, you may not cast us out.ā€āø
Despite their efforts, the gods were able to find no laws that Asmodeus had broken. Unsurprisingly, as he himself had helped write them. This conflict between Asmodeus and his host and the remainder of the unsullied gods continued on, with the gods unable to get rid of him, and free themselves of the constant reminder of the Blood War.
With time, the concepts of ā€œgoodā€ and ā€œevilā€ entered the world alongside law and chaos, and Asmodeus was able to argue for dominion over those souls that chose evil. The gods loathed the reminders of this fact, however, and when Asmodeus volunteered to move to the empty plain of Baator, they enthusiastically agreed. It was only years later, when the number of souls arriving at their own planes after death began to sharply decrease, that they thought to travel to Baator themselves, where they found a robust operation based around encouraging mortal souls to take to the path of evil.Ā
ā€œYou have granted us the power to harvest souls,ā€ replied Asmodeus. ā€œTo build our Hell and gird our might for the task set before us, we naturally had to find ways to improve our yield.ā€ The war deity drew forth his longsword of crackling lightning. ā€œIt is your job to punish transgressions, not to encourage them!ā€ he cried.Ā  Asmodeus smiled, and a venomous moth flew out from between his sharpened teeth. ā€œRead the fine print,ā€ he replied.āøĀ
While the recorded story implies a simple act of one-upmanship, a later section of the Fiendish Codex tells us that Asmodeusā€™s split from the other celestial deities was not so amicable.Ā
Once he had committed himself to residing in Baator, the deities physically cast him out of the upper realms, and he fell ā€” and fell, and fell. Upon reaching the plain of Baator, he plunged through the nascent layers he had begun to shape. (In some versions, his fall created the layers, breaking the formerly featureless plain into nine pieces, which then arranged themselves into floating tiers.) At last he hit solid ground but continued to fall, spiraling through rock and soil. The protesting earth of Baator tore at his flesh, opening scores of gaping wounds. Still he fell, until he could fall no farther. The point where he finally stopped was the deepest part of Baator ā€” the Pit.Ā  The wounds that Asmodeus suffered in his dramatic fall have never healed. Though he manages to appear blithely unperturbed by his injuries, they still weep blood every day, and he has been wracked by constant pain for millennia.Ā¹ā°Ā
This casting down and its associated injuries is corroborated in other texts as well, including 3eā€™s Manual of the Planes.Ā
5eā€™s Mordenkainenā€™s Tome of Foes seemingly follows on from the Fiendish Codexā€™s account, sharing one conception of the fallout of Asmodeusā€™s stratagem, positioned as an in-universe account penned by the aasimar bard Anodius in a work titled ā€œThe Trial of Asmodeusā€.
At some point after Asmodeus broke from Celestia to rule Baator, he was brought up on trial for unspecified crimes and trespasses. Asmodeus claimed the right to speak in his own defense, and a court was gathered, arbitrated by Primus, a being intrinsically aligned with Neutrality and Law. From Asmodeusā€™s recorded arguments in his own defense, we can surmise that those on Celestia had accused him of acting outside of the law in actively working to turn mortals to evil.Ā
The case stretched on, with neither side ceding ground, for weeks, until finally Primus declared his judgment. While Asmodeus could not be convicted of any true crime ā€“ for he had acted within the law in all things ā€“ he was to take an artifact, the Ruby Rod that is synonymous with his position, which would ā€œguarantee his adherence to lawā€.Ā¹Ā¹ A quote from Anodiusā€™s in-universe text is helpfully provided by Mordenkainen:Ā
ā€œI literally sit beneath eight tiers of scheming, ambitious entities that represent primal law suffused with evil. The path from this realm leads to an infinite pit of chaos and evil. Now, tell me again how you and your ilk are the victims in this eternal struggle.ā€ ā€“ Asmodeus addresses the celestial jury, from The Trial of AsmodeusĀ¹Ā¹
In a manner similar to his contested origin, Asmodeusā€™s appearance is described in several varying ways ā€” a fact that seems in line for a principal schemer such as himself. This seeming discrepancy could also speak to varying uses of aspects or projection spells.
The Fiendish Codex II in one instance paints him as ā€œa horned, red-skinned humanoid with a tall, lithe frameā€ who ā€œdresses in splendid robes and understated but elegant accoutrements.ā€Ā¹ā° A later section in the Codex corresponds to this description given in the Book of Vile Darkness:Ā
Asmodeus stands just over 13 feet tall, with lustrous dark skin and dark hair. He is handsome in the same way that a thunderstorm is beautiful. His red eyes shine with the power of hell, and his head is crowned with a pair of small, dark red horns. He dresses in finery of red and black; a single garment of his might cost what an entire nation spends in a year. Of course, he is never without his Ruby Rod, an ornate piece of unparalleled jeweled finery and vast magical power.Ā¹Ā
Regarding his personality, he is most often described as ā€œa soft-spoken, articulate, chillingly reasonable fellow who is confident in his status as one of the multiverseā€™s most powerful entities. Even when surprised, he reacts with supreme poise, as if he were already three steps ahead of his adversaries.ā€Ā¹ā° The Book of Vile Darkness notes correspondingly that:Ā
The actions of Asmodeus are often mysterious to outside observers, but that is due to the short-sighted and dim-witted view most beings have. Asmodeusā€™s manipulations are labyrinthine and insidious. They work on a grand scale, although when it suits his needs he is willing to focus his attention even on the status of a lowly mortal soul.Ā¹
I was looking for Big Five info to a history, and I'm SO disappointed that the AssClass Wiki don't even have their height... What do you think are their heigths?
First, I'm going to use B4 specifically when referring to the group without Gakushuu.
Second, you have every right to be upset. The B4 are apparently so unimportant they don't get their own profiles like Gakushuu or the 3E kids. Even Karasuma's boss, who's arguably more irrelevant and has less screentime, gets his own freakin' profile, with a birthday! Why??? (I mean, I don't mind some extra info on background characters, but a birthday for every B5 boy would've been nice, you know?)
The wiki says Ren's height is 180 cm, even though it's not mentioned anywhere in canon (#JusticeforB4Boys). I think it's because he's taller than Shuu (175 cm), so I guess the wiki meant to say he's around 180 cm.
For the other three, let's take a look at this character design reference.
Tumblr media
So, Ren is obviously the tallest. Seo seems a little shorter in comparison, even if he's leaning to the side. It's safe to say he's around Gakushuu's height, give or take. I like to think he's shorter by one or two centimeters just so Gakushuu can enjoy being the SECOND tallest Virtuoso šŸ¤
I never realized this, but Araki and Koyama seem to be around the same height only because Koyama is hunched over. Imagine if he had a straight posture, I think he'd tower over Araki by 2-3 cms, which isn't a lot, but as Gakushuu likes to say (to himself) "Every centimeter counts" as he stands tall next to Seo.
So, from tallest to shortest, the order would be:
Ren
Gakushuu
Seo
Koyama
Araki
I'm not going to give each B4 kid a specific height because this may change later. It's been ages since I last watched the anime or read the manga. I used to think Koyama was the shortest because he looked so small around the others. Maybe after a good rewatch/reread and a healthy dose of scene over-analysis, these headcanons will change again.
TL;DR:
The B4 don't get respect
Araki is a pipsqueak (affectionate)
The children of Uriel Septim VII, the last generation of the Septim dynasty, is a very complicated bunch so I made a family tree:
Tumblr media
As you can see, he sired a total of six: five sons and one daughter; four legitimate heirs and two bastards, with three different women (busy man). Despite this generously sized lineage, fate willed them as the last Dragonborns of the last Cyrodillic dynasty.
A few notes about some lore-obscure bits:
1. Ariella Septim: Few fans are aware that in the Elder Scrolls Arena, there is mention of a Crown Princess, Urielā€™s eldest legitimate, by the name of Ariella Septim. She is only featured in the French translation of the Arena player opening (but not the English) and never made a literary appearance ever again. Instead, Geldall was written as the Crown Prince in Oblivion. For lore reasons, we may assume she was killed by Jagar Tharn, Urielā€™s Imperial Battlemage who betrayed the Empire via the Imperial Simulacrum during the events of Arena. However, itā€™s safe to say the game devs just forgot about her. Michael Kirkbride even commented that he has ā€œno ideaā€ if morrowind devs knew about her. More details here.
2. Calaxes Septim: Urielā€™s other bastard son, Calaxes Septim, served as Archbishop to The One. He began to preach that the gods were angry with the secularity of Tamrielā€™s governments and advocated rebellion against the empire. Due to this, itā€™s rumored he was assassinated while visiting the Temple of the One by a Bosmer swordswoman leading the emperorā€™s personal guard named Lady Allena Benoch. The interview with this Bosmer, Words and Philosophy, which serves as the main source of information regarding Calaxes, states that he was killed in 3E 498 (likely an error since the 3rd era ended in year 433) hence why I chose to leave his death date as unknown. As for his birth, he is likely to be the eldest child of Uriel since he was old enough to be given Archbishopric. Fun fact: Allena Benoch has a card in TES legends here.
3. ā€œGemileā€, Martinā€™s potential mother: Sometime after the Oblivion Crisis, Caius Cosades returned from his deployment in Morrowind to pay his respects to Uriel. Though this lorebook, Caius Cosadesā€™ Visit to Uriel VIIā€™s Tomb, is technically an unofficial source that sadly never made it into the games, it is a phenomenal read. While reminiscing and talking to himself, Caius says, ā€œWho was his mother? Was it that Gemile girl you had put out of the way, right after the Warp in the West?ā€ Thatā€™s all we know.
4. Martinā€™s speculative age: From Caiusā€™ visit to Urielā€™s tomb, it would be logical to assume Uriel sent Martinā€™s mother ā€œout of the wayā€ after giving birth. However, the Warp in the West took place in 3E 417 which would make Martin around 16 and that is far too young. Itā€™s also unlikely he was conceived around the time of Urielā€™s three legitimate sonsā€™ births before the Simulacrum since that would put him in his mid 40s to 50s which isnā€™t impossible but personally seems a bit too old. Additionally, we know Uriel couldnā€™t have fathered him between 3E 389 and 3E 399 since he was trapped in oblivion during the Simulacrum. My theory is Martin was conceived right after Uriel returned from imprisonment; perhaps spending a decade in oblivion rendered him vulnerable and he made unwise choices. So, if Martin was born in 3E 400-401ish that would make him 33-32 during the events of Oblivion.
5. Empress Caulaā€™s death: Caula Voria was not targeted by Mythic Dawn assassins but Caius in Urielā€™s tomb makes a snarky comment, ā€œā€¦he [Martin] turned out to be worth twice the lot of those preening fools you got on the scheming witch, Caula Voria, may she die again tomorrow.ā€ This implies she died around the same time as the rest of her family or years before, but she certainly is not alive in the 4th era.
Lucien Lachance x Antoinetta Marieļ¼» Fanfic ļ¼½
The Elixir of Death
This story is set in 3E 428, five years before the Oblivion Crisis, on the night before Antoinettaā€™s first contract. (For the background and prologue of this story, please see this post.)
Iā€™m deeply moved to have finally turned something so dear to me into a story after holding onto it for so long šŸ’–
Before you read, please note:
CW: Violence, Murder, Abuse, Imprisonment, Suicide
- Iā€™m still learning English, so there may be some awkward expressions.
- I have a preference for dark themes, so this and future works may contain violent content.
Please read with that in mindšŸ„ŗšŸ™āœØ
-----------------------------------------------
A month had passed since Antoinetta Marie was welcomed into the Sanctuary. She had begun her new life as a novice assassin. Her dedication to training brimmed with vitality, and her blue eyes shone with hope.
On this day, a small party was being held in the Cheydinhal Sanctuary. It was a modest dinner gathering to celebrate Antoinettaā€™s birthday, but the family members were in high spirits, congratulating her on her new life and enjoying each otherā€™s company in lively conversation. Even more special, her first contract awaited her the next day.
The candlelight gently illuminated the dining table, making the smiles of her brothers and sisters shine. Antoinetta had not received such blessings since her early childhood. The scene before her eyes brought back memories of days once filled with unconditional love. However, those recollections were fleeting, gradually dissolving into nothingness.
Yet, in this special gathering, the presence of someone Antoinetta dearly respected was missing. The one who had saved her life when she was on the brink of death, her life-saving benefactor who gave her a miraculous opportunity for a new lease on life. The one she wished to express her deepest gratitude to before her first contract, the one she had quietly fallen for.
The absence of Lucien Lachance, the Speaker who governed this Sanctuary, cast a shadow over her joy.
The silence of the midnight hour spread throughout the underground space. Antoinetta lay on the bed in her room, staring blankly at the light. Watching the flickering flame somewhat eased her tension about her first assignment, and her eyelids grew heavier. She wanted to extinguish the light before falling asleep, but she surrendered to the comforting blur of drowsiness.
Antoinetta was anxious. The fear of failing her mission and being killed was undoubtedly terrifying, but unknown fears were merely products of the imagination. However, it was the pounding heart, the stiffening body, the halting of all thoughts that were caused by the familiar fears.
She would rather choose death than be taken back to the Imperial Prison. That was Antoinettaā€™s fervent wish. The harrowing memories of her past continued to gnaw at her heart, casting a single dark shadow over her otherwise hopeful new life.
Antoinetta did not precisely remember how many people she had killed up to that point. Killing had been a means of survival on the harsh streets, but it was fear that drove her to murder. The countless abuses she suffered in prison had pushed a young girl to commit ruthless serial murders.
ā€œI could do it again,ā€ Antoinetta thought as her consciousness began to fade.
To overcome fear, one must killā€”each time she plunged the rusty knife, each time she struck with a sack filled with stones, each time she sank her teeth into and tore at the filthy flesh, the voiceless whispers of Sithis echoed in her ears.
ā€œYou are guided because you followed that revelation,ā€ said Deathā€™s emissary who saved her. The hand the man extended to her was cold, yet somehow warm, and Antoinetta never forgot the thought that this might be what death felt like.
ā€œMy savior... ā€
Whether it was a dream or reality, she murmured these words and then noticed unfamiliar footsteps coming from the hallway. Half of her consciousness had already drifted into sleep, but she could tell that the sound was gradually approaching her. It couldnā€™t be, she thought, opening her eyes. This was no dream.
Antoinettaā€™s heart began to beat a little faster. A small hope that had begun to sprout was desperately suppressed by the fear of disappointment. Despite her internal struggle, the footsteps came closer and finally stopped in front of her room. A sharp knock echoed through the room.
In a high-pitched voice, Antoinetta responded and jumped out of bed. Holding her racing heart, she hurried to the door, took a deep breath, and slowly opened it.
ā€œSpeakerā€”youā€™ve returned!ā€
He had likely returned to the Sanctuary and headed straight for her room. Lucien was still wearing his black robe, the hood not yet removed. Antoinetta tried to discern his expression hidden in the shadows, but as soon as she caught sight of his prominent nose and the area around it, she was overcome with embarrassment and hastily let her gaze wander downward.
As if to escape, she shifted her eyes to his hands and noticed a sleek red fabric. His black leather-gloved hands held it, and it had a slight thickness, indicating something was wrapped inside. While she stood frozen in surprise, Lucien slowly extended the bundle towards her with both hands.
ā€œThis vial has been filled with a most deadly poison. If ingested, it will likely cause death, probably instantly.ā€
He moved his hand closer, encouraging her to open the bundle. With a tense expression, Antoinetta reached out towards the bundle and gently pulled at the edge of the fabric. Revealed from the luxuriously glossy silk was a golden pendant. At the end of the softly shining chain, there was a small vial.
ā€œIf you seek salvation and drink this poison... death.ā€
As Antoinetta raised her face at these words, Lucien nodded gently. She carefully took the vial in her hand and stared intently at the liquid inside. It was clear and colorless, but it shimmered like a jewel. A strange liquid indeed. Without being told it was poison, no one would ever suspect it.
ā€œThank you very much. With this, I can...ā€
To overcome fear, one must killā€”Sithis has no words, but her unconscious mind chose this. The leader of the Sanctuary knew that death would be an elixir more powerful than a hundred consolations or encouragements. That method would give her strength.
Antoinetta clasped the vial with both hands, bowing her head and closing her eyes as if in prayer. The story of the lonely girl who decided to kill her aunt, after what seemed like an eternity of darkness, was finally moving into a new chapter. Her intertwined emotions coalesced into a single tear, which fell down her cheek.
ā€œI heard tomorrow is your first contract. Try not to get yourself killed... I wish you luck.ā€
Through her tear-filled eyes, Antoinetta saw Lucienā€™s smiling face. The faint light from the room flickered in his eyes. She remembered that this same gaze had enveloped her on the night he saved her from her fading life. Her eyes did not waver as they remained fixed on him, but time did not stand still.
Lucien gave a slight nod, then quietly turned and left the room.
His absence accentuated the silence within. It felt as though a spell had been broken, and Antoinetta stood there in a daze in front of the door.
Unspoken emotions swirled within her chest. It would likely be several weeks before she could see him again. She desperately wanted to see him one more time, to imprint his image on her memory, so Antoinetta impulsively dashed out of her room.
The lanterns mounted on the walls faintly illuminated the hallway. Looking ahead into the dim light, she caught sight of the black-robed figure.
She wanted to call out, ā€œSpeaker,ā€ but no further words came. Antoinetta wordlessly watched his receding back.
The outline of his black robe gradually blurred, blending into the deeper shadows. Soon, his figure became a mere shadow and vanished into the darkness.
