Fantasy Adventure Games part 2
You know what, there's still a lot of trad stuff that I haven't even touched out there, and I would be remiss if I didn't feature some of the other, newer entries into the field. This is a continuation of this post.
So, once again, staying with very trad fantasy games:
Dragonbane by the Free League. An English translation of the latest edition of the classic Swedish fantasy RPG Drakar och Demoner, Dragonbane is a very traditional fantasy roleplaying game whose design is clearly heavily informed by RuneQuest but in its latest incarnation also owes a lot to the game structure popularized by D&D 3e (a game that still informs a lot of game design to this day). Dragonbane is, at its core, a skill-based, no-levels fantasy game, but that still has classes of a sort to grant structure to character creation and advancement. Its playstyle has been dubbed "mirth and mayhem" by its creators, and it emphasizes quick resolution and a sense of randomness. The presentation is also top notch, with art by Swedish fantasy artist Johan Egerkrans.
Forbidden Lands by the Free League. Another game published by the Free League, Forbidden Lands is a classic fantasy RPG with a focus on sandbox play and exploration in a strange, scary world. Forbidden Lands uses a variant of the Year Zero engine from Free League's Mutant: Year Zero games, a type of d6 dice pool system. With out-of-the-box mechanics for exploration, foraging, negotiations, and hunting, as well as running one's own stronghold, the real star of the show is the ready-made sandbox setting that comes with the game, begging to be explored.
Against the Darkmaster by Open Ended Games. The creators of Rolemaster, mentioned in the previous post, for a brief moment held the license to the Middle-earth setting of J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium and produced a slightly lighter version of Rolemaster to support playing in that setting, titled Middle-earth Roleplaying, or MERP for short. While the game is now long gone, it is still fondly remembered, and in 2019 Against the Darkmaster, a game that is essentially a tribute to MERP made by long-time fans of the game, was Kickstarted. Against the Darkmaster, or VsD for short, is a game in the heritage of Rolemaster, but with inspirations taken from modern RPGs, including the officially licensed modern LotR RPG The One Ring (which is another soft recommend from yours truly). VsD is a gritty and dark traditional RPG that seeks to empower its players to play out stories of a fellowship of heroes struggling against the forces of darkness, very much in the genre of Lord of the Rings, Dragonlance, and the Chronicles of Prydain. If you want crunchy, epic fantasy with a hint of darkness, this one's for you.
Fantasy Hero by Hero Games. A fantasy adaptation of the HERO System, the system that powers the classic superhero RPG Champions, Fantasy Hero is the closest thing I have found to an engine for running a fantasy immersive sim. The core philosophy of the HERO System is that its open-ended power creation system can be used to build anything, and Fantasy Hero directs that energy towards empowering fantasy adventures. The HERO System is very crunchy, almost like a TTRPG physics engine, and it's a dream come true for a certain type of gamer. Heck, I've personally considered using it to run a fantasy sim campaign where spell research is conducted through the power creation system. It's so cool. There is a one-book version of Fantasy Hero out there, called Fantasy Hero Complete, but word on the street is that the better way to run it is using the Hero System 6th Edition rules with the Fantasy Hero 6th Edition genre supplement on top.
Earthdawn by FASA. Once officially tied to the fantasy cyberpunk RPG Shadowrun as its mythic past, due to ownership issues Earthdawn is better understood as its own, standalone game without any ties to Shadowrun these days (and even in the past the actual ties were minimal). Earthdawn casts the player characters as magically empowered individuals who direct their magic into various disciplines, so that a Warrior in Earthdawn isn't simply someone who fights: they are someone who utilizes magic to subtly empower their fighting ability. Earthdawn is very much kin to RuneQuest in how it ties its game system to its world's underlying metaphysics, while being more in line with your traditional dwarves and elves and wizards fantasy. The setting of the game is post-apocalyptic fantasy, with a demonic scourge having recently ravaged the land and people for the first time stepping out of their magically sealed vaults to explore the world. In addition to Earthdawn fourth edition, there is an alternate, simpler version of Earthdawn titled "Age of Legend," which uses an extremely simplified system based on dice results of "Yes, and..." and "No, but..." style prompts. The fourth edition released by FASA is a very traditional, crunchy RPG.
Talislanta by various. Talislanta is a classic fantasy RPG set in an extremely unique fantasy setting that promises ABSOLUTELY NO ELVES. Talislanta is a very unique vision of a fantasy RPG with a very idiosyncratic setting, unique metaphysics, weird sights, and extremely easy to learn yet deep system. The system is very simple, with a basic d20+modifiers resolution mechanic, with varying degrees of success built in, and this system is used for absolutely everything, including combat, skill resolution, and magic. Speaking of magic, Talislanta's magic system is based heavily on keywords and schools, with magic-users being potentially able to produce almost any kind of magical effect the player can imagine under the keyword system, but with certain types of magic simply being more fit to certain purposes and some types of magic not being able to produce certain specific magical effects. What's more, legacy editions of the game are available online for free.
Anyway, that's enough for now.

The Nature of Lost Souls
A mock textbook insert about souls not from Nirn. Mostly a way to explain stories that involves inter dimensional shenanigans, self inserts, modern-girl-in-skyrim fics.
Content: TES Headcanons
Warning: Exposition and Wild head cannoning ahead.
Word Count: 426
On The Nature of the Lost Soul
Theologian Alacarn of Shardswell is esteemed scholar known for his research into mysticism and soul gems. While most of his work is highly attested in the magical community, his research regarding "Lost Souls" remains one of his more unorthodox ideas.
He claimed to have identified a new type of soul, one that was neither anuic or padonomic in nature. He had later dubbed it "the Lost Soul." In his own words:
"As we know, souls of mortals are but fragments of the Aedra of ages past. Shattered pieces of divine power that have been dispersed, reshaped, and reformed over the countless millennia. It is through the cycles of life and death that these souls are born anew. It is simply a truth of life that our souls harmonize with the world around us. True, some more than others. But that can be attributed to skill and dedication as well as natural talent.
"Lost Souls" are peculiar in that they exist in a constant state of disharmony. The frequency that these souls exist clashed with almost everything that came within range. It was as if it's very existence was an affront to nature.
I propose that these souls are not from nature, at least not ours, anyway. When speaking to the individuals that carry these souls, "Traveler's" if you will, you will find that the common trend to these individuals is that they were displaced in some supernatural force and searching for a way back. From where, you might ask? Most declined to say, as the common response was always "someplace very far from here." Those who have disclosed their origins described fantastical realms of mechanical wonders or of grim hellscapes, Could these individuals come from worlds outside our own? What do you call a soul that had come from beyond the void itself?
These are travelers that are lost within the flows of time and space, whose very existence is a fleeting glimpse of a reality outside of our own. These are anomalies that warrant investigation."
Unfortunately, the esteemed scholar met an untimely end in 3E XXX during the oblivion crisis. Many of these "Traveler's" presented in his research were persons of unknown origin or vagabonds by trade thus impossible to verify. Therefor his research has yet recreated or confirmed by any notable intellectual body at this time.

Week 2 - Tuesday 05 November
Period 1 - class 2B were doing a character design cover task. The class were very skilled and a likeable bunch. Some of the drawings were really good but some were very quiet and didn’t want to talk or engage fully. Opposite to most lessons, I thought my commenting on work was poor, whilst my voice projection and giving tasks was improved since last time. Leading the learning for these cover tasks is very useful to build core skills of teaching.
Period 3 - class 1c were doing the exact same task. they were really quiet and produced some really good drawings. There was a lot of creativity present in these classes. Again, I led the learning which was fun!
Period 4 - i was helping out with class 5e. Making paper tubes for Ellie who has fallen very far.
Period 5 - 3E is the noisy group of girls. It was a lot more calm today, maybe because they are used to my presence now? One girl wasn’t engaging with the work instead drawing her own thing, which wasn’t what we wanted to see. It was difficult to know what to do in that situation as my mentor said she can get very confrontational if repeatedly told to do something she doesn’t want to do. I wouldn’t know what steps to take further. Anyways the class were a lot more chatty with me today which was nice to see but there’s still some girls who don’t want to talk to me. There’s two girls in particular that I worry about teaching, especially the written element.
Period 7 - 1J were working on a task involving researching, and designing a collage of their favourite food. I enjoyed the fact that a lot of pupils asked me questions and not my mentor. There was a lot of confusion but many had the skill to do the task to a good level. Some pupils weren’t engaging fully which made it a struggle. Other pupils seem very keen to learn.

Part 1: Pre-Character Creation
So, the way creating a mercenary unit works in BattleTech is ... it depends. There's a whole host of various rules and rulebooks, but the ones I am going to be using, because I think they're the most fun -- partially because of the cronch -- are the FM: Mercenaries Revised / Total Warfare rules for force creation. You put together a commander or cast of characters (like, say, a party of PCs) either using a fast-generation system or the third edition of the MechWarrior RPG, and use random rolls and planning to put your force together.
We're going to create a whole character - the steps for that are Affiliation selection, Lifepath generation, assigning your attributes, traits, and skills. It's a huge amount of crunch, but I genuinely love MechWarrior 3e's life path generation system. It's a great way to take a character on some roads you may not have expected.
Your Affiliation is where your character is from, essentially. Generally, that's one of the five Great Houses: Kurita, Davion, Liao, Marik, and Steiner; formally known as the Draconis Combine, the Federated Suns, the Capellan Confederation, the Free Worlds League, and the Lyran Alliance; and colloquially known as Space Imperial Japan, Designated Protagonist Space England, Space Wow This Is Kinda Racist Soviet China, Space Merchant Oh Look There's Another Civil War Balkans, or Space Imperial Germany.
There are other, less common places, but all the other worlds of the Inner Sphere put together add up to less than any one of the Great Houses. You could, for example, choose to go sign your life over to Space AT&T But It's Also A Church, who maintains the galaxy's FTL communications infrastructure. Or you could be from the Periphery, the backwater kingdoms of the inner sphere. In a game where the Clans exist (they don't show up in the Inner Sphere until 3050), you can be a Clan character or group, but we're going to start play in the early 3030s, right when manufacturing and research is finally going to start picking back up in the Inner Sphere.
We are, in fact, going to be from the Periphery, because of a little place called the Magistracy of Canopus, the second largest Periphery kingdom - at a whopping 41 worlds controlled in 3025, many of them fairly worthless, as happens in the Periphery. The largest Periphery power, the Taurian Concordat, has 58. By contrast, the smallest Great House, Liao, controls 209 worlds in 3025, many of high quality.
The Magistracy is special to us because it is a matriarchy - once enshrined in law, now in cultural bias. Men are seen as largely unfit for public service and leadership, but universal suffrage has been in place for centuries now. They are pro-immigration and social freedom, and have a reputation for hedonism. Their interstellar traveling pleasure circuses feature many delights, but the most important one to us is that they have canonical genetically altered catgirls, thanks to their Sphere-admired biomedical industry.
The Magistracy is also famously uninterested in a standing army, keeping one of the smallest forces per capita in the Inner Sphere, but all citizens are required to serve in the military for a short period. They generally rely on local forces for defense - and mercenaries.
After spending awhile picking a strong name for a strong fighty lesbian, we'll start moving Francesca Quintana down her life in the Inner Sphere.

hi @wasp-factor! i'm your secret santa. i just wanted to say how happy writing this fic for you made me - i love gakushuu too, even though i never had the chance to write about him before, hopefully it's in character. i know you like gakushuu/isogai, and i tried to include it in the fic (apparently i really like this ship, i never thought about it before). i hope you'll like it and, since we don't know each other, maybe we'll become friends. happy holidays!
Asano Gakushuu discovers the magic of Christmas
He had done it on purpose. There was no other possible explanation.
Winter holidays were approaching and the headmaster himself had given class A a social studies assignment about the influence of Christmas. Normally, Gakushuu would not have minded writing a paper on a topic that he deemed to be quite fascinating, but that was really not the case: the headmaster apparently thought it would be delightful to have everyone discuss a different aspect of the main theme, so joining all the students’ essays would result in a rich dissertation that would cover every little detail. The problem was the theme he got.
According to the instructions he received, his task was to understand what made Christmas so appealing to people in terms of improvement of their mood and behaviour; in easier words, he had to investigate the odd phenomenon known as “the magic of Christmas”. Oh, and he had to provide actual evidence to support his thesis as well. He had to go on the streets and interview people.
So, his father absolutely did that on purpose. Forcing him to reflect on a social event he considered not only pointless but plain out dumb, while also having him interact with random strangers who were likely just as dumb was an extremely clever way to torture him. Like that was not enough, he knew he could not complain about it with his friends, who he was sure considered him lucky and would have immediately said he got the best topic. The audacity.
It could have been literally anything else. And to say he was almost excited - no, not the right word. He was intrigued when the theme was announced. He had made some research on his own and he had stumbled upon an interesting article regarding the frailty of a consumist economy which revolves around a single month of extreme consumptions, he would have been ready and enthusiastic to write about it. Ren got that part instead. Now that was luck.
Well, he better start to plan out his actions. First of all, he was going to complain to his friends: they were not going to understand him, but he still needed to get rid of some frustration. Then he would start right away. The deadline was two weeks from then and he needed to get properly organised to avoid spending too much time on this project. The sooner he turned it in the better.
---
It was not going as well as he expected. He thought everything would have run as smoothly as usual, but he should have taken some factors into account. The problem was that for the first time in his life, he found himself in the unenviable position of talking about a topic he had no knowledge nor experience of.
His father and he never celebrated Christmas, or any holiday to be fair. Their house was the only one in the neighbourhood, or maybe in the whole city, which was completely missing decorations. Once he was asked how he felt about it, and the truth was he did not feel anything at all. His family was not religious, and not believing in Jesus Christ sounded like a perfectly good reason not to celebrate his birth to him. He did not mind his house keeping its sobriety either; being exposed to flashing lights for more than two minutes gave him a mild headache, actually. He never thought it was sad, or whatever people said about those who did not celebrate, it was just behaving like usual in a time of the year which was just like any other period.
Still, he was having some troubles doing his deed. He had decided to start off with the interviews, since he knew from the beginning he would have had to rely on other people’s experiences, and also he wanted to get rid of the most distressful part first. That turned out not to be a good idea too.
Well, to be fair he did not have a choice. He just seemed to be particularly unlucky with the people he met. He tried his best to select those who looked more likely to actually answer his questions, but these last days also did their best to remind him the one thing he’s not good at: understanding others.
He wanted to develop a good thesis, so his intention was to gather information from people belonging to different social classes, age groups, gender, occupation and so on; he had thought that, if he had been able to analyse the phenomenon through different perspective, he would have also found the key to see the whole picture. Apparently he could have not been more wrong.
Apart from being dragged down a rabbit hole of war stories and memories of a long dead man by an old lady, witnessing a college student have a full on mental breakdown and having a business woman tell him that her children were ruining her life and their expensive desires were driving her crazy - that would have been helpful, if only he had got the part about the economy - he received the same answers from everyone. And those were not answers he could work with.
A lot of his targets claimed that presents were the best part - both receiving and giving. It made sense, at least the part about receiving, because he really could not see the appeal of wandering all day through the streets - oh, the irony - looking for gifts and getting crazy while trying, and probably failing, to figure out what someone might appreciate. Again, it could have been an interesting take to explore for the economic aspect, but he should stop thinking about that.
No, the tradition of presents was actually a decent starting point, maybe it was kind of shallow and too closely connected with the intrinsic materialism of a consumerist society - okay, enough - and it was not completely clear to him why everyone was so obsessed with Christmas and not any other holiday if it was just about gifts, but he could make it work. What actually bothered him was the other answer he frequently received.
It was lights. People actually told him that they liked the little lights all over the buildings and all the other decorations. Lights. Was he supposed to say that what made the population radically change its habits and attitude in the month of December depended on lights? What is wrong with everyone?
Exchanging presents and “festive atmosphere” really was all he got. He could feel his average grade suffer. He was not going to let it happen, let alone because of a social studies assignment on the magic of Christmas.
---
It was his fifth day of scanning the streets for someone who would give him some good material to work on. He had been reviewing his notes and the night before he had had an idea: it was his last resort, but time was running fast. Reluctantly, he made his decision. He was headed towards the 3E building and he intended to make a truce.
When he did arrive at the building he could not find anyone. Class E was definitely odd, but how skilled each of them appeared to be at getting through that hell of a path down the mountain was beyond weird if you asked him. Maybe it was for the better, he thought. He would have found another way, he did not need any help, certainly not from them.
Just as he was about to head back he noticed someone walking out of the building and towards him. Isogai arrived at the spot where he was standing fast, stopping at an appropriate distance before speaking.
- Asano-kun, I didn’t expect to see you. Do you need anything?
He did not look too happy to see him there, but he was very polite, just like it was expected from him. Isogai also seemed eager to know what brought him there, which was legitimate; he swallowed down his pride and forced himself to do what he came for.
- Actually, yes, I do.
Gakushuu straightened his back before continuing.
- I’m writing an assignment for social studies about the social effects of Christmas and I need to interview some people. I haven’t received any satisfying answer so far, so, would you mind if I asked you a couple of questions?
Isogai was surprised by what he could tell. Fair, he thought. He was not aiming at him specifically, but any 3E student would have had the same reaction. Or a way less polite one. He had to admit, he was quite content having met him: he did not insult him and sent him away, which was already a lot, and Gakushuu did have some sort of respect for him, if he could call it that. He acknowledged he was smart and most importantly he was skillful enough to be able to use his intelligence to do a good job as class representative. He was from class E, so he mostly despised him, but a little less than he despised the others.
- Of course. What is it?
He had hesitated for a couple of seconds before pronouncing the words, and Gakushuu guessed he had debated whether he should indulge in their conversation or not until the very last moment.
- Do you consider Christmas important?
Isogai pondered his words upon answering.
- My family is Christian, but I’ll admit we don’t give much weight to the ritual celebration. Apart from that though, we do take Christmas seriously.
Gakushuu nodded slowly. Not religion then. He had already figured that bit on his own, religion might have been a relevant fuel in the past, but it could not get such an effect in these times. It was time to ask the infamous question then: he really hoped he was not going to hear presents and lights again; this really was his last resort.
- If not religion, what is it that makes Christmas so special? How is it different from any other holiday?
Isogai took yet another pause.
- Well, it is the only holiday that brings my whole family together. On Christmas day no one is at school, or at work, and even if it happened before that we had to spend it in the hospital, we still were all together.
A small smile was forming on his face as the words rolled out of his mouth; he may have not even realised the corners of his mouth rising ever so slightly.
- We also usually get to eat a meal that is a little more elaborate than our usual, and since we cook all together too it’s another chance to spend as much time as possible with each other without worrying about everyday’s problems. It’s the one day we can live completely carefree. And since everyone else tends to feel more generous, they leave higher tips, which is convenient.
Family. Was that the key? It was the message that also laid under those college students who mentioned some dishes that their relatives were going to cook and that they were looking forward to eating. He should have understood before, he told himself, but he knew he could not. He just could not. He was never going to understand what it really meant, he knew because he had forced himself to do it before. Even those times he had tried to picture a cohesive family, he still did not manage to get past the notion that the concept of family itself is supposed to be on a higher level than most things. Why would something one had no control over ever be so important? How could relationships decided by casuality alone be more relevant than those born out of mutual choice? It did not mean anything to him. He was never going to understand.
But at least he had enough material to write a good essay now. He could have just thanked Isogai and left, but there was that last sentence he had said. He did not think too much before opening his mouth again.
- Don’t you think that’s hypocritical?
Isogai now gave him a full, conscious smile, even though it had a shade he could not quite place: it looked almost sympathetic. He shrugged before finally replying.
- Maybe it is, but I’m not in a position to judge, if anybody is.
Gakushuu was not sure about what he should do with that statement. It was something to think about.
- Alright, that’s all I needed. Thank you, Isogai-kun.
---
Gakushuu did not write the essay right away. Instead, he took his time to adjust all the information he had gathered. He did not take any notes while talking to Isogai, but he soon realised that was not going to be an issue at all: he remembered all his words perfectly, he noticed, and he proceeded to write them down in the evening.
Later, he caught himself thinking about that conversation more than once. They did not even say much, and he wished they had taken some more time. Speaking with Isogai again was something he would have liked; they did not have much in common, but he still thought they might have some interesting discussions, if only they had the chance.
He actually ended up handing in his paper on the last day. It was not usual for him, or, to be honest, it should be said it had never happened before. He knew he had made excellent work.
---
It was not evening yet, but the sun had set long ago. The sky was clear and a soft yet glacial wind was blowing; Christmas lights seemed brighter when the moon was not high up in the sky, drowning the stars themselves with their overwhelming glow. After a careful analysis, Gakushuu was confident in confirming that he hated them, and the flashing ones still gave him a mild headache. How all those people could appreciate them was forever going to be a mystery.
Mindlessly walking through the city centre, he was still thinking about that assignment. It had kept him occupied for a good portion of time,  and he was glad it was now something he did not have to worry about anymore. As he was passing close to a café, something at the corner of his eye caught his attention. He stopped by the side of the street, unsure of the reason, and peeked through the café’s window: there he saw Isogai serving a couple of elders with a warm smile on his face. He was working hard, probably, no, surely looking forward to spending the next day with his mother and siblings. The man he had just served handed him what looked like a very generous tip, and his mind trailed back to that one conversation again. He could not understand Isogai’s situation either, he had to admit it, at least to himself. At the moment, it felt okay. Realising he could not understand everything for once did not feel like a tremendous crime he had to atone for. It actually seemed to him that he could empathise with Isogai, just for a second, and despite knowing it was nothing but an ephemeral feeling that was going to be gone in a flash, it made him feel well. Maybe poor people deserved rights, after all.
Then Isogai noticed and his face went pale. Gakushuu did not immediately interpret that reaction correctly, but he soon became aware of what his presence there had meant in the past: he thought he was going to tell his father about it.
Isogai excused himself and rushed outside to meet him without even bothering to grab a coat and started talking before Gakushuu had the chance to clarify his intentions.
- Asano-kun, I know I shouldn’t be working but I really-
- I’m not going to report you to the headmaster.
Gakushuu interrupted him immediately. Isogai did look significantly relieved.
- I was just passing by. But since I’m here I wanted to thank you for helping with my assignment. It was an interesting conversation.
Isogai’s eyes were wide open - he almost looked like a deer caught in the headlights. But soon he started to warm up and reserved him a smile similar to the one he gave to the clients in the café.
- Oh, I’m glad I was helpful. It was interesting indeed.
Gakushuu could almost feel himself starting to smile in the moments of silence that followed, which he hurriedly broke.
- Well, it’s cold. You should head back inside.
He quickly said then. Isogai was almost shivering actually, but he looked somehow pleased. Gakushuu suspected he had seen him smiling, but he could not be sure.
- Yeah, that’s right. Merry Christmas then, Asano-kun.
He greeted him; his smile might have been brighter than those Christmas lights.
- Merry Christmas, Isogai-kun.
He really did not despise him that much.
---
After leaving the café, Gakushuu decided to head home. The walk was not long and he deemed it quite relaxing. He was not paying a lot of attention to the familiar buildings of his neighbourhood: everything was in place, just as it was when he had left the house in the morning.
Except there was a difference, a small detail that could have gone unnoticed and that most people had surely missed, but which appeared like a massive change to his eyes: on his house’s front door there was a Christmas wreath. It was small and quite simple, but it was there. He stared at it for what might have been a whole minute before snapping out of the shock and entering the house.
He found his father sitting on the sofa reading a book like nothing had happened, but he was the only person who could have put it there.
- What does it mean?
Gakushuu asked as soon as he arrived in the living room, without bothering to greet him first.
- What is it?
His father asked, his eyes still fixed on the book in his hands.
- The Christmas wreath on the front door, what about it?
- I don’t know what you’re talking about.
Gakushuu stared at his father for a handful of seconds, before huffing what sounded like a “whatever” and going straight to his room. There, he allowed himself to smile.

[In her research into Imperial-funded overhaul events, Meryse contacts the Nerevarine. This probably isn't canon. Unless]
3E 432
Meryse set up a sound wall around the projection room she had booked for the afternoon. She wished she could do this somewhere more private, like her own home, but even the "modern-style" projection that many mages made use of was still a little ways beyond her current skill level, and so she was stuck using a device at her local Mages Guild.
It was a dangerous game, she knew, doing research that could be considered anti-Imperial in an Imperial-funded facility, but she was fairly confident that she knew how to take the appropriate precautions. Besides, if the rumors could be trusted, the person she was going to be talking to was at least nominally considered a friend of the Empire, and so even if the projection could be tracked, she should be safe.
In their brief exchange of letters, they had provided each other with a pointer gem, a tiny crystal infused with a small amount of magicka, to make it possible to target each other with a projection. When the designated time came, Meryse placed Ildari's pointer gem in the device's slot and powered it up with a bit of her own magicka. She sat at the desk in the rune on the floor and set her notebook down in front of her while the device whooshed to life and sent its projection to what she imagined was a fabled mushroom tower all the way in Morrowind.
A few moments later, a translucent form appeared in front of her of a Dunmer woman with hair flopped to one side of her head. She had heard that the Nerevarine had been young, but she was still surprised to see that this mer barely looked older than she. Of course, it was hard to gauge an age from a projection, especially of a mer. Maybe she was older than she looked, or maybe Meryse was really just older than she felt.
As they exchanged introductions and pleasantries, Meryse noticed a ring on Ildari's finger decorated with Azuran symbology. She had heard of that ring, Moon-and-Star, in her studies when preparing for this meeting. It was said to give Nerevar, and only Nerevar, a substantial boon in interpersonal abilities. She wondered whether Ildari was wearing it for symbolic reasons, or if she was just as nervous to be interviewed by a stranger as Meryse was to be conducting the interview. Either way, Meryse wished she had a ring like that, though preferably one that wouldn't kill her.
"So, I'm studying some of the major events that the Empire has seemed to have a hand in, as part of a larger research project, and I wanted to talk to some of the key players in those events," Meryse said. "You were employed by the Emperor himself to fulfill your Nerevarine prophecies, correct?"
"Ah...not exactly," Ildari said. "The Emperor selected me, yes, and tried to get me into his service, but I never even ended up talking to the guy the Empire wanted me to go to."
"Oh," Meryse said, her pen hovering above her notes. "Can I ask why?"
"Someone intercepted me outside the Census and Excise office and gave me a better offer if I would take the orders they'd given me to his boss instead of the Imperial contact I was told to meet. His boss was on the council of House Telvanni, which I wanted to connect with anyway, being my ancestral House, and it gave me the option not to work for the Empire, so I took him up on it."
"And the Empire was fine with you not following their orders?"
"'Fine' would be a stretch." She laughed. "Let's just say that when I visit my mom in the Imperial City these days, I stay clear of Green Emperor Way. They probably know better than to mess with me, honestly, but I also know better than to dangle myself in front of them."
Well, that was a deviation. Maybe this was more dangerous than Meryse had anticipated, if this Ildari was less of a friend of the Empire than she had previously believed. On the other hand, it might mean that her answers would be more useful than she expected, as long as any of the questions she had prepared still applied. She probed her wards to make sure they were holding up, and then glanced down at her notebook to decide where to go next.
"You were still initially set on your path by the Emperor, right? Do you know how he picked you?"
"Oh, Uriel absolutely orchestrated my involvement, even if I broke away the second I had the chance," Ildari said. "Certain entities have the ability to identify 'Heroes'—agents of prophecy. Gods can do it. I suspect Moth Priests can, too. Something about it being written in the Elder Scrolls. I assume an emperor has connections and probably makes it his business to keep tabs on any Heroes that pop up.
"Here's the thing, though: they did have to mess with my life to make it work. They killed my parents before I was old enough to remember them, because the prophecy said the Nerevarine has to have 'uncertain parents.' And they made up the charges that landed me in prison, because apparently being in prison is important to trigger the start of a prophecy, at least according to my friend Vivec. That tells me two things. First, they identified me as a Hero early on, long before the prophecies were actually set to be fulfilled. Second, they're willing to force a prophecy's conditions to be met, if it suits them."
"Wow, I...didn't realize they would go that far. Not that it's surprising, exactly. I guess I just didn't know they had the resources and the drive to act on prophecy so long before it's relevant."
She took a moment to consider the implications for her own research, and jotted a few notes down. She looked at her next question. It would sound strange, she knew, but Ildari seemed open-minded enough. Clearly, she was already aware of the implications of prophecy; she might not balk at a question about the nature of time and the aurbis.
"Did anything...strange happen while you were fulfilling your prophecies?" she asked. "I know that's broad. Anything that's hard to explain or understand, maybe relating to the flow of time?"
"That's very broad," Ildari agreed. "There was the part where I got all my memories back from my past seventeen incarnates' lives. That was strange and somewhat relates to the flow of time. But that's pretty specific to me. Probably not what you're looking for." With half a smile, she asked, "So, you're studying the Warp in the West?"
"Ah...yes," Meryse said with a nervous laugh.
"Don't buy the idea that it was a miracle from the Divines?"
"Not exactly," she said. "Not even a little bit, really. I want to figure out what really happened. Everyone sort of waves their hands around what happened, and no one seems to remember it. I do, sort of, but I was a kid, so no one believes me. I want to know what the Empire is hiding, and what else they might be hiding—who else they've hurt."
"Well, if you're looking for people the Empire has hurt, you've come to the right place," Ildari said dryly. "Be careful, though. The Empire doesn't always look kindly on its opponents, much less on people trying to uncover its secrets. I can say what I want, within reason, because quite frankly, I have power—both politically and in terms of combat ability. If you can't say the same, you should take care who you say these sorts of things to."
"Oh, I am careful, don't worry," she said. "I've got wards set up right now, I obscure my notes, and I keep my exact research questions largely to myself."
Ildari nodded. "That aside, though, you said you remember the Warp? The whole thing?"
"I remember three distinct days, when everyone talks about it being one or two. And when it was over, we were bending a knee to Uriel, and suddenly everyone was talking about the Nine like Talos had been there all along."
That seemed to interest Ildari. She paused, brow furrowed, and opened her mouth a few times as if to talk, but changing her mind each time.
After a few moments, she finally said, "I wonder if you're a Hero."
That was, somehow, not what Meryse was expecting.
"Me? I doubt it. I'm not strong or powerful or...special in any particular way, and I've never noticed the Empire messing with my life specifically, like you say they did with yours." She shrugged. "I'm just a mage, a researcher."
"So was I, before they shipped me off to Seyda Neen."
Meryse considered it for a moment longer. "I don't know. If that's all it is, it just feels like such a disappointing answer. And even if it is true, I still want to know how it happened. I guess I'll keep researching until I know better."
"Good idea. I'm sure there's plenty that the Empire is hiding; you being able to tell that they're hiding something is more of a compass than a solution," Ildari said. "Still, you might want to consider picking up some survival skills, maybe learn how to use a sword or armor, just in case you get tossed on an adventure without warning."
"Yeah, couldn't hurt," Meryse said. "Well, thank you for taking the time to talk to me. This has been...enlightening, really, even if not in the ways I expected." She added a small laugh at the end.
"Research is never boring, is it?" Ildari said. "I hope you find what you're looking for. And if you publish your work, I'd love to read it."
"I will be sure to send you a copy. Thanks again, Ildari." She waved awkwardly and disconnected the projection.
Once the projection device was back to its inert state and she had taken Ildari's pointer gem out of its slot, she glanced down at her notes one more time. There was not much there, but she still felt like she had learned a lot, and come out with more questions than she had entered with. Naturally.
She added one more note about picking up some new skills, and then passed an encryption spell over the page. When she was satisfied that her notes were sufficiently obscured from prying eyes, she closed her notebook, slipped it into her bag, lowered her wards, and headed back out into the Mages Guild as though her concept of the world had not just been shaken.

She remembers they ran away from something, or someone. She doesn’t remember what. She doesn’t remember losing them.
Haven was raised by the Mages Guild in Cheydinhal. She often stole from other members and later expanded to people out of the Mages Guild. At sixteen years old she was caught breaking into a book store, and taken to the Imperial City, until she was deported to Vvardenfell. There, she was employed by the Blades and ended up discovering her heritage as Nerevar’s latest incarnate, and fulfilling the Nerevarine Prophecies.
“It’s true. I know it’s true, because I feel it is. It feels right. I recognised them. I don’t remember them, but I recognised them.”
The defeat of Dagoth Ur, and the deaths of Almalexia and Sotha Sil sent Haven into a deep depression she never truly recovered from. A brief respite came in the form of the Oblivion Crisis, where she was distracted and able to form a close friendship with Martin Septim -- but Martin’s death sent her back into it.
After mantling Sheogorath, she spent most of her time in New Sheoth until a few years into the fourth era when she heard of the threat of Baar Dau. Haven attempted to help stop the moonlet from falling, but failed, and died. Her daedric nature meant she respawned in New Sheoth... much to her shock, in the form of a male Chimer -- Nerevar. Her memories of all her lifetimes returned over the next few hours, but “Nerevar” semi-split off from Haven in that he removed her memories from her (himself?) and returned to Haven’s form, because he found her depression much more bearable than his own.
After that, Haven was able to manifest Nerevar whenever she was in Oblivion, and the two could talk face-to-face. Sometimes, even in Nirn, she was able to hear his voice and talk to him there, too, but nobody else could.
Haven spent the next two hundred years shifting her time between New Sheoth and occasionally venturing to Tamriel. In 4E 201, she discovered that she and Nerevar were Dragonborn, much to the latter’s shock -- even after four thousand years, Nerevar still had much to learn about himself. She defeated Alduin, and helped the Stormcloaks take Skyrim.
Note, it was not out of any sense of thinking the Stormcloaks were in the right, or even that Haven was particularly fond of them. She wasn’t, and she resented Ulfric Stormcloak for how he treated her people. But she had a political goal in mind -- after the civil war, Haven returned to Morrowind. She kept in touch with Ulfric and ended up embarking on a quest that mirrored Nerevar’s thousands of years before -- uniting Morrowind and ejecting the occupying Argonians from Morrowind. With Ulfric’s help, over the next thirty years she was able to complete this task, establish a new government and help rebuild Morrowind. Two hundred years late, Haven, Hortator of Morrowind once again, fulfilled the unrealised portion of the Nerevarine prophecies -- the part where she drives the Outlanders from Morrowind.
Soon, however, Haven would get in the way of a Psijic time portal and end up in the 2nd era, BECAUSE I LIKE FUN.
Either way, it took a bit of time for Haven to figure out exactly what happened; her lack of time in Morrowind meant it took a bit of time to realise that the “Three” other Dunmer were talking about were the Tribunal, and not the Good Daedra. It wasn’t until she saw Vivec City being built, and Baar Dau still in the sky (a bit higher than she remembered) that Haven realised when she was.
Upon that realisation, Haven decided to stay, and made no effort to find her way back. Her nature as a Daedric Prince remained, but she was content to let the other Sheogorath handle all that.
Then the eighteenth Daedric Prince, aka incarnation of a four-thousand-year-old war hero managed to get herself mugged and sacrificed by Mannimarco. Nice. And so the rest of that particular story is history.
After the events of Clockwork City, Haven found the memorial to Nerevar while Divayth Fyr and Sotha Sil were talking. She broke down. For over two hundred years Nerevar’s ghosts had haunted her, and she blurted out the question that had been haunting her former self for four thousand years:
“Why did you do it? Why did you kill me? I’ve been wondering for thousands of years and I could never figure out why. Why did you do it?”
For the first time in four thousand years, Nerevar got some peace, and he and Sotha Sil reconciled.

Week 2 Reflections
When looking at my own personal growth and development as a leader; as I consider the traits approach, I can see my inane ability to talk to almost anyone, and charisma being a strength.  Some traits that will be a detractor for me would be having a myopic view of tasks that need to be completed, and not taking a more critical thought process at times. While the ERAU MS-Leadership program has widened my worldview, and introduced concepts I have never thought of, or employed previously; it is my belief that these concepts will take some trial & error to use in real world situations.
When it comes to my current leadership style, which I see as changing as the weeks go by, the traits still play an important part in my overall success, as my skill in relating to people assists my hybrid affiliative-coaching leadership style. During the week, one of the assigned readings What Makes a Leader? by Daniel Goleman brought up an ever-increasing important trait; having Emotional Intelligence.  As he conducted research of senior management and their decision making, he concluded that “90% of the difference in their profiles was attributable to emotional intelligence factors rather than cognitive abilities” (Goleman, 2006).  I bring this up as an important virtue which I see warrants a change in how I view leadership.
The study Goleman conducted highlighted how important self-control/self-awareness can be on decision making, along with self-regulation as starters.  Having control of your emotions can make or break the bond you have with subordinates, and your executive management team.  I have spent the last year working on increasing my emotional intelligence; as I have met resistance with managers previously, due to not having self-regulation or social skill.  The management of workplace relations can mean accomplishing a career objective or being stuck as a cog in the wheel of the organization.  I will check back on this blog post, to see how my development of emotional intelligence will continue.

Bringing Law Firm Management Into The Future: Thomson Reuters Elite Moves 3E To The Cloud #sponsored
Tumblr media
Successfully running a law firm takes more than just superior legal skills. At the end of the day, a law firm is a business just like any other company. Mastering both the business and legal sides of the equation is an increasingly difficult balancing act. Thankfully, technology has come to the rescue, with software solutions that help law firms conquer the business side of things.
For over 70 years, Thomson Reuters Elite has been a leader in creating enterprise business management tools for law firms, first with Enterprise®, the company’s legacy solution that started it all, and then with 3E®, which pushed the envelope even further. With 3E, Elite took enterprise business management to new levels, allowing law firms to streamline their operations, boost efficiency, and grow along with the changes in the industry.
Now, Elite is changing the game yet again by moving 3E to the cloud. Of course, they’ll continue to support their groundbreaking on-premises software. However, unveiling a cloud-based version of 3E opens up a new world of possibilities, both for Enterprise users who need to make the switch to 3E and for firms who are looking to make the jump to the cloud for their financial management needs.
The Benefits of the Cloud
More and more firms are making the move to the cloud, and for good reason. Particularly for mid-sized and smaller firms, the cloud offers a host of benefits that make cloud-based products more attractive than traditional on-premises software. Compared to their Biglaw counterparts, smaller firms tend to be more constrained when it comes to support staff and budgets to invest in infrastructure and things like additional servers.
Moving to cloud-based products removes the burden of having to amass capital to invest in hardware infrastructure and frees up staff to work on other projects. Cloud products delivered via a software as a service (SaaS) model delegate that investment and maintenance to expert outside vendors. Your SaaS provider comes with its own data servers and network security team, meaning that cloud-based software can greatly reduce your expenditures in those areas, making software implementation easier and faster. Unless you’re a firm that has already significantly invested in an on-premises data center with the necessary network security, making the move to the cloud can be highly beneficial.
Security is another huge consideration when it comes to cloud migration. The cloud has incredibly sophisticated security mechanisms built in from day one. Elite has partnered with Microsoft® Azure®, which, like other major cloud providers, spends over $1 billion each year on security research and development and has a massive team devoted to network security. Law firms simply can’t come close to meeting that level of investment in security. Azure data security centers are built to withstand both cyberattacks and natural disasters. When you use a cloud-based product like 3E that’s in the Microsoft cloud, you get to take advantage of all those benefits without the prohibitively huge investment it would take to get them on your own.
What Moving to the Cloud Means
Understandably, the first question on many users’ minds when it comes to making a change is always the same — how is the new product different? In the case of 3E in the Cloud, the answer is pretty simple — it’s really not. And for users, that’s a great thing.
From your perspective as a user, using 3E in the Cloud won’t really feel any different than using the on-premises 3E. Of course, there are a few super-technical differences, like where the databases are hosted and managed or how authentication works, but none of those affect how 3E operates in your day-to-day business life. Elite has engineered 3E so that they can have multiple deployments of the same product, using the same logic, just packaged in different ways.
Most firms are already in the cloud in one way or another, and those who aren’t will be soon. The cloud is the future of legal technology. Between the decreased investment in on-premises data centers and the increased assurances of network security, cloud products are a win-win. Add to that the fact that 3E in the Cloud functions the same as on-premises 3E, and making the move just makes sense. With 3E in the Cloud from Thomson Reuters Elite, it’s never been easier to manage the business side of running a law firm, meaning you can focus on what you do best: serving your clients.

CLASSIFIED DOCUMENT CLEARANCE LEVEL 5-A                                                WEREWOLVES
0-BRIEF
Werewolves and Lycans are two unique subsets of the shapeshifter class of abilities, infections, and enchantments. Wild populations of both species are being monitored on all major continents. Removal of these animals is not recommended except for in cases of rampages, multiple sightings, poor assessment, or acceptable request for study subjects. Additional documentation noted. All documentation classified. See Document C-LR-H1882 for Lycan brief. The werewolf is a quadruped that depending on species and type may often be passed off as a large northern-type dog, or even a wolf hybrid in legal areas. These animals are variable in temperament, but often exhibit some instincts of the natural wolf species. Most seem to gravitate to areas already populated with others of this species even in situations where they do not interact with their peers and remain singular.
1-PHYSICAL
CHANGE 1a The ‘shift’ of a werewolf is reportedly painful and causes a drain on the body’s natural resources. Studies have shown that repeated changes without a high protein caloric intake of 5,000> will cause high levels of aggression, deterioration, and eventual heart failure and death. A werewolf’s voracious appetite must be maintained in order to keep the animal from entering starvation and awakening survival instincts. Reports have indicated that newly infected without the support of an experienced werewolf are more likely to ‘fight’ the associated hunger. These specimens are also most likely to consume non-infected family members, neighbors, and pets. See attached briefing S-16 for strategies concerning such events. TYPE 1b Historical documents transcribe much more specific differences in regional werewolf species. The ease of modern travel has caused a rapid muddling of the species. Agents have observed signs of crossbreeding in the field, such as heavier winter coats on desert type specimens. See document C-W-22RA for the risk assessment report on the isolated ‘purity packs’. However, the Agency still still recognizes the four main types and requires all agents include species type in all reports. See document C-W-03S for more detail.
ARCTIC - The largest of the types. Agency Historians have concluded Arctic Werewolves are the likely cause of the ‘direwolf’ legend. Best captured when in a human state to large size and muscular statures. Arctic’s have an excellent sense of smell and excel in cold weather conditions to -40C.  DESERT - Small to medium in size, Desert types are easily distinguished by their larger, pointed ears and ‘silky’ coats. This is a slimmer species noted for their agility and speed coupled with an exceptional heat tolerance. There has been some consideration given to crossbreeding Arctic to Desert for a dual-purpose Ranger, but nothing has moved to trials at the writing of this report.  FOREST - The most varied of any type given the range of climates in which they are found. Common factors include a double coat, exceptional night vision, and stamina. Theories that the Forest Type is founded from a crossbreeding of Arctic and Desert types has not yet been proven. Capture method may vary per individual subject. TROPIC - Extinct. Very little is known about this type. Most historical documentation from pirates is badly damaged. Expeditions sent to prove a theory that a small, isolated pack still lives on a remote tropical island in the Pacific have not returned.
2-MENTAL
URBAN 2a Contrary to previous reports, urban environments have not shown to cause an increase in abnormal behavior in werewolves. Urban werewolves may still attempt to hunt and chase small animals in even in populated areas. This is considered a non-issue, as the infection cannot be transferred to non-humanoid species and primary focus has not been observed shifting towards humans with an abundance of small game such as squirrel.  While all types have been shown to instinctively seek out the familial pack bond that has been observed in wild natural wolf populations, werewolves in urban environments find partners at a faster rate than their rural counterparts. Studies have concluded that since the majority of urban werewolves settle in large cities, the anonymity and abundance of night life allows for the pack-instinct to flourish with greater opportunity for intercourse and bonding. RURAL 2b Rural werewolves have the highest percentage of established family packs. Current studies are underway on the theory that a large percentage of rural werewolf offspring migrates to larger cities after maturity, as rural werewolf populations also have the highest percentage of lone individuals in any category in both males and females. Reports from field agents have all concluded that while the risk of outbreak is higher in a lone wolf, tracking and observation until the subject in question has settled into a pack-bond situation is most effective for efficient capture of live specimens. Chronically solitary werewolves are often anti-social males, recommendation for such specimens is live capture or neutralization.  INSTINCT 2c Werewolves of all types share instinctual similarities with natural wolves. A large pack will include grandparents, parents, and their offspring. Power is shared between the adults, the ‘Alpha Hierarchy’ is rarely seen in werewolf packs. See  Document C-LR-H1882 for more information on Alpha Hierarchy. Occasionally, multiple werewolf families will congregate or settle in close proximity to one another and co-exist peacefully for multiple generations. Hunting instinct varies per individual subject, but most display a natural aptitude in tracking making them highly effective in pursuit and discovery. Chasing and subduing game and other supernaturals almost always requires training and technique refinement, but steps are being taken towards inborn skills. Marking varies depending on the individual. Most will partake in rolling but some young males may partake in marking in outdoor environments. Recommendation is standard training procedures to discourage marking behaviors. HUMAN TRAITS 2d Research has proven that the base human traits of the individual are amplified after successful infection and survival of first change (see subsection 3c). In-house Agency psychological testing is mandatory for all subjects considered for infection and assigned Class Type. Psychopaths are immediately referred to the Hunter Class regardless of scoring in other areas during testing.
3-INFECTION
TRANSMISSION 3a Transmission of the werewolf virus is most commonly though a saliva-blood contact during an attack. Successful transmissions from attacks are high due to the stress on the immune system from multiple wounds and bleeding. This allows the virus to take a firm hold within the immune system itself, initiating a rapid healing response and drastically increased appetite. Blood-Blood transmission is far more rare in cases of spontaneous infection, but have been recorded in historical documents. Consuming any part of the animal raw carries a small risk of infection, however the possibility is increased by the presence of wounds in or around the mouth or ulcers of the stomach. Thorough cooking renders meat safe to consume, however the brain should never be eaten. VIRAL LOAD 3b The viral load of the werewolf is critical for successful transmission of the virus. Loads are lowest directly after a full moon phase of any kind. During this period transmission rate is <1%, normalizing after a week for an transmission rate of <3%. During a standard full moon viral load uptakes moderately. Transmission rates in mauling situations are as high as 84%. However, in standard research settings with average healthy subjects yielded successful transmission rates of 46% with saliva-blood transmission and 66% with blood-blood transmissions. During key lunar cycles viral loads uptake severely. Transmission rates in mauling situations are 100%. Research settings yielded 92% transmission in saliva-blood and 98% in blood-blood. Blue moon cycles, blood moons, and harvest moons have all been proven to cause this viral load reaction. SYMPTOMS 3c Rapid healing is the first sign of a successful transmission. A small test cut should be made on the subject 15 minutes prior to transmission and monitored for 30 minutes post. If the wound does not close in this period, the transmission was unsuccessful. Research has shown that it takes approximately twenty-eight days for the virus to take full hold in the new host’s body, regardless of key lunar cycles during that time. While the virus is establishing itself, the subject will experience several more symptoms: Increased appetite, cravings for raw meat, fever, nausea, vomiting, sneezing, runny nose, itchiness, mood swings, allergies. SURVIVAL 3d Survival rates of first-change werewolves turned in spontaneous situations is as low as 8%. The leading cause of death is heart failure due to insufficient protein and calorie intake during the incubation period. Second cause is death by family member, neighbor, or police. Third is hit-and-run vehicle accidents. In controlled settings, survival of first-change werewolves is guaranteed with use of safe rooms, restraints, and calming medications. ALLERGIES 3e Werewolves are contain a minor genetic flaw that causes allergies in all types. All Handlers are required to complete a course detailing allergens their animal may encounter. A. napellus (Wolfsbane/Monkshood) - Consumption of a small amount causes severe gastrointestinal distress in human-phased werewolves, Larger amounts can cause hallucinations, aggression, uncontrolled shifts, seizures, and death. Consumption of a small amount by a werewolf in animal status will cause drooling, pacing, and listlessness. It will be unable to return to human status for a week or longer depending on amount ingested. Larger amounts consumed during animal status will result in permanent animal status. A. napellus is a controlled substance only for use as ordered by the Director. Handlers found in possession of any part of the plant or extract of one will be sentenced to death. Silver - Pure silver causes severe burns in both human and animal status werewolves. Wounds containing silver will not heal and fester if left unattended. Lower content silver causes a stinging or burning sensation, the severity of which depending on the silver content. Silver is only permitted for use during training and by Handlers with Hunters. Coffee, Chocolate - Small to moderate amounts by human or animal status werewolves can cause hyperactivity, chewing, chasing of small animals, and howling. Larger amounts can cause the above symptoms with the inclusion of vomiting.
4-BREEDING
CROSSTYPES 4a Tracking and research has yielded promising results towards increasing efficiency in breeding for military applications. Werewolf females are only fertile for a short period between January and April, however the offspring has been shown superior to infected subjects in Training and Behavioral Control. See Document C-W-72B for details. Werewolves crossed with Humans yields a twenty-five percent (25%) chance of a Lycanthrope (bipedal), twenty-five percent (25%) chance of a human carrier, and a fifty percent (50%) chance of a non-carrier human offspring. Werewolves crossed with Human Carriers will yield either Lycanthrope or carrier offspring. Werewolves crossed with Werewolves will almost always produce Werewolf offspring, with the small chance for a Human Carrier offspring to occur. Werewolf/Lycan crossings are banned.

http://bit.ly/2GIVSiA Most of us know that a good night’s sleep is key for happiness and productivity, and that conversely, a night of poor sleep can have negative effects on our performance during the day. But a new study manages to find precisely the brain area responsible for learning new skills and shows how it can be affected by poor sleep quality. A team of researchers from the University of Zurich (UZH) and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, both in Switzerland, set out to examine the effect of a disturbed deep sleep phase on the brain’s ability to learn new things. More specifically, the new study – published in the journal Nature Communications – looks at the brain’s ability to change and adapt in response to the stimuli that it receives from the environment, or neuroplasticity, in the motor cortex and how it is affected by deep sleep. The motor cortex is the brain area responsible for developing and controlling motor skills, and the deep sleep phase – also called slow-wave sleep – is key for memory formation and processing, as well as for helping the brain to restore itself after a day of activity.
