A Deal | Vox x Gen Z Reader
A/N— Decided to turn my little drabble into a little series of one-shots based off of ideas I come up with and any requests y'all may have for it 💅🏻 ALSO a huge thank you to @writteninlunarlight-years for the idea that inspired me to kickstart the series! It's very much 'enemies to lovers' core (kinda, I guess?), but I have no idea how far this will go lol. Hope everyone enjoys this — sorry it took so long :)
Warnings: Reader is implied female, Valentino existing, mentions of souls being owned, reader is close to being an overlord
Word Count: 1,724
Summary: You were a growing threat — and what better way to keep an eye on said threat, than to have you start living under the same roof as three of the most influential overlords in Hell? This is only the beginning. . .
Since your arrival to Hell, things had been nothing short of interesting — from your offers that couldn't be refused, all the way to the demon's that warily approached or backed off when you were near.
It was quite the spectacle.
You were quickly rising within the ranks of Hell, from a mere sinner to damn near an overlord — for all the souls you claimed in a few short months. It was noticeable — your social climbing.
What you hadn't expected was two overlords reaching out in the same day, both itching for some sort of deal.
You'd heard whispers of the feared Radio Demon and practically laughed at the thought of people being scared of him — sure his smile was off-putting, but other than that, you didn't really see the hype.
So when he approached you outside of the Café you'd began to frequent, striking up casual conversation as if you were old friends, you quickly understood what was going on.
He was powerful. You were becoming more powerful. He offered guidance and you knew there was a 'but' coming.
When it dropped, you sighed, before sipping on your warm beverage.
"I can offer you guidance, and in return, I want your soul as a pledge of undying loyalty, my dear!" He made a hand motion, as if he planned on writing your name in the stars — could you even see the stars from Hell?
"I'm sorry — but other than guidance, what do I get out of it? I've done well on my own for the last six months."
Protection. Respect. Free housing. It had almost been tempting — especially the free housing, especially in that economy. . . But in the end, you had told him that you'd think about it.
In reality, you wouldn't.
Giving up your freedom for half the shit you could get on your own? He had you fucked up.
Then there was Vox; the wide open rival of Alastor. You'd actually seen him around, having been in a couple clubs he was coincidentally visiting at the same time.
When he approached you, it was three hours later and you were actively sending a message to the group chat of demons whose souls you owned, over Sinstagram. You were simply reminding them of the consequences if they took the food that CLEARLY had your name written on it.
You didn't care that you were sitting in a restaurant — if any of them touched that leftover sub quarter, you'd kill them, and not in a funny or ironic way. You'd actually kill them double dead with no return.
When you looked up, he questioned your business with 'the fossil' and was met with a blank stare rather than words.
He clarified that he meant Alastor.
"Oh. I don't have any." You replied simply, reading the few messages that popped up on screen.
At the revelation, he was pleased and began listing off all of the things he could provide that Alastor 'would fail miserably at'.
Money. Protection. Respect. A sounding board for ideas. Anything your heart desired. All at a small cost of being under his surveillance almost 24/7.
That snatched your attention away from the two demons who began arguing in their native languages. Did you understand them? Fuck no. Would you be translating that later? Abso-fuckin-lutely.
"And what's in it for you?" You asked the TV demon. You didn't like the thought of being under surveillance and having little to no privacy, but his deal had already been sweetened by Vox not wanting your soul.
"Power all the way around. With my influence, you can be a billion times better than that staticky prick. You'll practically have demons begging on their knees."
"Tempting." You admitted.
"What do you think?"
"Eh, fuck it. Why the hell not?"
From there it was a flurry of events — you remembered eating, but then you were leaving with Vox and then quickly found yourself in a meeting room with the other Vees and shit you had to sign, stating that you wouldn't spill any details of the inner workings of any of the three companies.
Who did he take you for?
Once you read each document thoroughly, making sure it wasn't a contract for your soul, you signed your name on the tablets screen and sat back in your seat, pulling out your phone to begin translating the argument from the beginning.
"Great! Ground rules — our private spaces are off limits unless we explicitly tell you otherwise, that includes bedrooms, offices, and basically everything that isn't a —"
"Uh-huh, got it." You mumbled — snorting at the beyond creative insults that began to flood the screen in English.
"Listen—"
"It's my nap time, TV boy. If you can put this conversation in a text, do it." You sighed, stretching your limbs. They popped as you stood — who showed these fuckers how to make gifs of each other?
Oh.
You did. HA!
"You know I can kill you, right?" Vox questioned, his claws digging into the table.
"So could a really motivated duck — or a Canadian goose. Those things are straight out of Hell, Box."
"It's Vox." He growled.
Ooh spicy. "Whatever —"
"Can you be serious for five minutes?"
"Ok boomer."
His screen glitched and his claws dug further into the desk as he stared at you.
Velvette barked a laugh and looked away from her phone long enough to see Vox on the verge of malfunctioning, a smirk slipping onto her face. "Can we keep her? I like this one."
"This one's more tolerable than the last." Valentino mused, blowing his smoke into the air. He leaned forward in his seat, uncrossing his legs. "And we don't even know her name."
"The name's Y/N. Don't wear it out." You winked before turning around and exiting the door you had been ushered through, however long ago. The moment the door closed, you heard Vox angrily talking with Velvette and Valentino, who were much calmer than the TV overlord.
Oh, this will be fun. A good idea, for sure.
Thirty minutes later, when you were in the room Vox had told you was yours, both Velvette and Valentino followed you on Sinstagram before adding you to the Vees official group chat.
Your first week living with the Vees went by rather quickly — of course, you respected their privacy as requested, spending most of your time in your room or the common areas which mostly consisted of the kitchen, living room, and game room.
Still, you'd managed to piss Vox off three more times, and got Velvette and Valentino to join in without trying.
Velvette quickly picked up your terminology, calling Vox a boomer at any given opportunity. It pissed him off to no end. Valentino had only done it twice, mostly because they both spent a lot of time working and only interacted with Vox when he had the time to.
Within the first seventy-two hours, you noticed the weird obsession Vox had with Alastor and you sarcastically quoted a scene from a movie at dinner that night.
"Is this love, Agent Romanoff?"
And he had looked at you weirdly, pausing mid rant. Later you had to explain to the other two that it was from a movie — and who Agent Romanoff was.
Vox avoided you mostly, which you chalked up to him thinking you were annoying. Good.
By the end of the first month, Velvette had you chilling with her while she worked, usually with you being the sounding board for her ideas.
More often than not, you had good ideas.
That little fact prompted her to throw you a sketch book, telling you to get to work.
You were getting paid to be there, so whatever.
When you weren't with Velvette, you were declining Valentino's countless invitations to sit with him while he worked — you wanted nothing to do with that. Porn wasn't really your thing, even when you were alive, but you had a bunch of friends who were super into it.
Instead you went out alone, claiming you were getting lunch for yourself. You'd get lunch, after making a few deals with wayward demons who would thrive under your influence.
That one particular day, you hadn't noticed either presence behind you, until a fight broke out, causing you to turn around to see Alastor and Vox going at each other's throats — and not in an interesting way.
You somehow broke it up just after Alastor cracked Vox's screen.
"Why the fuck are you here?" You bit out harshly, directed at the two overlords who now stood three feet apart like scolded children, neither pleased to be there.
"You left without saying anything." Vox crossed his arms.
"You hadn't reached out, my dear." Alastor hummed, distastefully glancing over at the TV demon.
You groaned, throwing your head back. "Listen, get the fuck over yourselves! At this rate, I answer to Velvette, not the two of you boomers. Got it?"
Alastors eyes began to twitch as static filled the air, whereas Vox's cracked screen glitched as you walked away.
Later, when Vox approached you, you noticed that his screen was fixed. That was good.
"Got a minute, [Y/N]?" He questioned.
You looked up from the sketch book in hand and nodded, mumbling 'sure' as you closed it. You were tired from the long day.
So his next question caught you off guard.
"Why do you do this to me?"
"Do what?"
"Why do you purposely piss me off? You get along with everyone else, yet you call me names and disrespect my entire existence. Why?"
You sighed, not really having a real answer. "That's just the way I am, how I've always been. . . And in my defense, I call everyone names. . . Not just you. So, don't think you're special, Box—"
"— Vox —"
"I'm a bitch to everyone, just most don't realize it because their bitch scale broke a long time ago. Now, go. I have shit to do that doesn't involve stroking your fragile ego."
Vox wasn't sure what it was, but he knew he was going to keep a closer eye on you. What was so different about you?
You were close enough in biological age to Velvette, yet while there were similarities, there were so many differences. . . He wasn't sure what to think about any of it. Especially with you climbing up the power ladder.

THE NEW 'MENU" IS GONNA BE HELL FOR SYD
I have been reading Sous Chef: 24 Hours on the Line –by Michael Gibney because I wanted to understand more about Sydney's future responsibilities. I know next to nothing about the cooking industry, and this show particularly doesn't want to waste time explaining the context to the untrained eye (which is fair, we are here for the drama).
Man, this book was so awesome. It is literally like experiencing a The Bear episode in book format. It takes you through the whole routine, explaining who does what, the expectations, skillsets, and the emotional burden of each position. The protagonist is, of course, the sous chef, and what I have read made me feel scared for Sydney next season. So, every fact I display here is because the book presented it as the expected.
THE BEAR'S CASE
Now, a clarification: As I understand, the CDC supervises the whole kitchen, which is Syd's official title. But Carmy will technically still act as CDC since most executives don't move a finger; they are supposed to be there only to ensure rules and quality standards are followed.
The CDC is the person in the kitchen that everyone answers "yes chef/Oui chef too. The one that calls the orders and keeps everyone in line. The one who has the final say about what goes out of the kitchen. Under them, there is the sous, making sure all the operations are in order.
So you will technically have two CDCs; just one of them will have the final say, and you will have Tina as the sous. But that puts Sydney in a position to act both as CDC and a Sous, so I am using the book to guide what we may expect her to endure. This as a report made last minute with only two sources (pretty good, but still only two). Now, lets begin.
A very inexperienced staff: The author created a fictional restaurant based on his experiences, merging people he has met over the years to give you an idea of the most common in the industry. But it made something very clear to me: the staff of the bear, especially the line cooks, do not possess the training to operate at the level that Carmy is requesting. They better send them to culinary school before officially opening. I don't know why (I actually blame Carmy for this), but they haven't prioritized hiring certified staff since the beginning. They should have never had an opening day without knowing their staff and, if they were as green as Syd described them, sent their asses to culinary school right away. The fact they only bothered to send Tina and Ebra is baffling. And even when training is essential, experience is what can make the difference in unprecedented scenarios, and everything that Carmy is asking is pretty unprecedented by definition.
With the menu changing every day, Sydney's job as a cook herself and as the captain of many cooks is going to be darm near impossible.
Actually, in the book, there were two sous chefs, one for opening and one for closing. Even if you delegate the administrative task normally reserved for the morning sous chef to someone like Natalie (managing schedules and callouts, checking deliveries, and inspecting the state of the food before opening), it would still leave a lot of things on Sydney's plate. I am gonna be quoting this article:
"Few are the kitchens I’ve worked or sta’aged in where the Sous Chef wasn’t doing all the work that the general public thinks the Chef is doing. And don’t get me wrong, such is the natural progression of things and not without good reason. But more often than not, while the Chef is the General, with his/her name on the line, the Sous Chef is the lieutenant, seeing to it that the work gets done in the trenches".
During service, the chef (CDC) plates the dishes in the pass, but before that, the sous has to check the food the line cook brings; they need to be aware of how the executive chef likes a particular dish, the consistency, temperature, and other culinary details. Again, Carmy will act as CDC here and Syd as sous. Even though I didn't see them do this in f&f, it will likely be necessary for the future. Carmy changing the recipes constantly is gonna make it virtually impossible for Sydney to keep up, with their particular preparation, and since they are gonna be the final portal after the food gets to be presented to the client, it could cause a lot of friction between them.
Not only that, the sous chef normally leads the preparation of the specials (since in most restaurants, the ordinary menu has been established, only the specials can change every day) For both sous chefs in the book, leading prep consumed most of their time before opening, since, again, the executive has already trained them in how he prefers certain parts of the recipe. Again, in the Bear's circumstances, this will probably also be Sydney's job.
Replacing staff. The book even includes a scenario when a line cook fails, and the sous has to cover that station. Sydney is kind of destined to experience this, too, considering how unreliable their staff could be. If that happens, Carmy will be alone at the pass, checking every element before plating, which will obviously cause a delay.
Tina is the sous, and it will be interesting to see how she manages that; she definitely doesn't have the experience, and these expectations are definitely no industry standard. It hurts me that Sydney may suggest hiring another sous to work next to her or another cook who actually has experience operating in the industry to level up her workload. That is where I think Luca's role will be next season, if he goes to work for them. He probably has the skill set to do it. There is no point in having two people manage desserts.
Evidently, with a menu changing every day, it also means that Carmy has to make Syd come early every day to explain this recipe to her and make sure she can lead the rest of the kitchen in making them. Most of their dynamic is gonna rely on how much Syd can actually fulfill Carmy's expectations; she came here to work for him, running away from psycho chefs, and yet Carmy's expectations are going to be the most reckless the industry has ever seen.
The closing sous has to prepare everything for the next day long after the executive and the other sous are gone, revising the mistakes that were made, and preventing the ones they could make tomorrow.
Regardless of the title and responsibilities that may go on Sydney for being the only other experienced chef in the kitchen, we are talking about a 15-hour day. And I know it can be expected in this industry, but the layout for having two sous made plenty of sense. I don't know if Carmy will take part of the workload. I hope that is the case.
But yeah, the line "so you can push me, and I can push you" is taking a new connotation in my mind. What Carmy is creating doesn't make any logistical sense, with an untrained/inexperienced staff and with a sous chef that he trusts and cares about, but he is basically asking to perform to a level that defeats reason.
It is not even the level that made him "the bear" in his years as the best CDC in the world. Because even if Carmy's past executive was abusive and cruel, their expectations had to obey certain logistic logic that Carmy was completely abandoning. Carmy is not gonna be abusive, but all of this is a whole orchestra he is creating for self-punishment because even he won't be able to keep up with it, he may push everyone away because there is nobody who can. All of this is his version of self-harming. And Sydney and everyone he loves will witness, it until he asks for help.
Edit: I had to make a correction, explaining Carmy's and Syd's will technically both do the job of CDCs. Again, please do let me know more about that or feel free to correct me.

Main Masterlist | Robert Downey Jr. Masterlist | Read on AO3
It has been almost a week since your husband, Robert, flew both of you to Italy as a treat to get out of the stress you've been wrapped up in for almost three months now. He could tell you were nearing your breaking point, and to avoid that, he arranged for you to have two weeks off work so you could enjoy being with him and see some beautiful parts of the country.
Italy has extraordinary memories for you both since it's where you got married a little over ten years ago. Because of that, Robert wanted to bring you back to where your love for each other reached another high, and you couldn't be more thankful for it. For him.
You're currently staying in Venice for a few days, and tomorrow will be your last day here before moving to Florence, where you'll stay for the rest of your trip. Now, you've been strolling through Venice almost the entire afternoon, and Robert has just arranged to take you on a boat ride through the Venician canals in a gondola.
''It'll be perfect, Gorgeous; I can't imagine doing this with anyone other than my beautiful wife,'' he tells you as he carefully helps you into the gondola, ensuring your dress won't get caught in anything, or you won't trip and fall.
''Thank you, Robert, for everything. I can't believe you did all this for me, but I'm so grateful, and I love you,'' you tell him before leaning in for a soft kiss on his lips, and that's when the gondola ride begins. The two of you can't get enough of every sight you see, drinking it all in eagerly while taking photos with your camera, making sure no memory will be forgotten.
The man operating your boat is singing beautiful songs in Italian, and for the entire duration, it feels like you're transported back to your wedding day. Surrounded by the people you love most, and together with the man you've vowed to treasure forever. Your heart is swelling from all the love, and you never want this beautiful moment to end.
When the boat suddenly comes to a stop, you look a little confused at Robert, but he gestures for you to follow him, which you do without a second thought. After a 10-minute walk, you arrive at a small, romantic-looking Italian restaurant. Soft music spilled out of the building and onto the terrace, a welcoming warmth encasing you as you grabbed your husband's hand before walking into the restaurant.
''Abbiamo una prenotazione per due,'' Robert says without hesitation, taking you by surprise. The hostess guides you to a beautiful table with a view over the water, and you can see the sun setting as well, adding to the romantic atmosphere of the evening.
''Robert, I didn't know you spoke Italian,'' you say with a slight giggle because the thought of him speaking a foreign language like this makes you feel warm and tingly inside, as well as in your panties.
''I've been learning it as a surprise, but I have some phrases that'll be much more fitting for later in the evening,'' he tells you with a wink, and suddenly you can't wait to be back in the hotel, seeing what else he has to say to you.
You decide to go for a beautiful-looking lasagna, and Robert gets a delicious-looking seafood pasta that has you salivating when they put it in front of him. He can see your eyes growing wide at the sight of his food, and that's precisely why he lets you have the first bite, just like he does each time you're looking at his food like you want to make love to it.
''Hmm...'' you moan softly as you let the noodles find their way into your mouth, the taste invading your senses as it coats your taste buds. Robert can feel himself twitch in his pants as the sound reaches his ears, and he can't wait to have you back in the hotel room, stripped entirely bare, before he makes love to you.
The pasta is gone quickly, and the dessert - a tiramisu made by the restaurant owner's mother - follows soon after. After all the food, all Robert wants to do now is have you fall apart in as many ways as possible, and he's almost getting impatient on his way back to the hotel.
''Sei bellissima stasera, amore mio,'' Robert whispers in your ear as the dress slips off your shoulders, revealing the white lingerie you've put on, reminding him of your wedding night all those years ago. His long, gentle fingers undo every last hook of your corset before bending down to let the silky lace of your panties glide over your legs.
Soft kisses are littered over your thighs as he's on his way up, his hands gliding over the backs as they leave a trail of goosebumps. A gasp leaves your lips as he reaches your dripping pussy, placing a soft kiss on your mound before fully getting up and letting you take your place on the bed.
Your nipples pebble from his undivided attention, and a shy smile creeps onto your lips as he takes in your bare form on the bed, your hair splayed out around your head like a halo. Your hands grip the sheets in anticipation as you watch Robert taking off his clothing, salivating at the sight as his cock springs free.
Robert can't keep his excitement hidden as he climbs over you, and tiny beads of precum gather at his tip before he leans over you and takes one of your nipples into his mouth. He nibbles on it gently before laving over it with his tongue to soothe the sting and repeating it on the other nipple as well.
''Ti amo, bellezza, e non vedo l'ora di fare l'amore con te. Sei bellissima quando sei completamente nuda per me,'' Robert tells you in a low voice, and even though you don't understand what he says, it still arouses you to no end.
''Let me see how wet you are for me, Gorgeous. Spread these luscious thighs for me,'' he orders gently, and you do, letting them fall to the sides so he can slot perfectly between them as he admires your dripping pussy. With a low groan, he adjusts how he's situated, soon lining up with your entrance before slowly pushing in. He plans to take his time with you, wanting to extend your pleasure for as long as possible.
Your warmth has him quickly throwing that idea out of the window; he wants to be buried inside you as soon as possible. Soft moans tumble from your lips as you can feel him sliding in, every vein on his cock only seeming to build your pleasure higher. Once he is entirely in, you can feel his tip hitting your cervix, earning him a loud moan in response.
''Good girl,'' he growls before setting a torturously slow pace as he leans on his elbows, tipping his head down to capture your lips in a soft kiss, your hands gliding into his hair. Your body rocks with every thrust he gives you, and as he pulls away, he can't help but look at the way your breasts sway up and down with every movement.
''La mia ragazza perfetta, I'm gonna cum for you, Gorgeous,'' he says before leaning on one elbow and moving his hand to where you're connected, looking for your clit to ensure you'll both fall over the edge at the same time. He picks up the pace slightly, and before you know it, you're gripping him like a vice as the orgasm washes over you, Robert letting his seed spill inside you as he nuzzles into your neck with his nose.
''Ti amo, Bellissima,'' Robert whispers in your ear before he turns over, letting you lay on top of him as he's still buried inside you. This is the perfect ending to a fantastic day, and you can't wait to spend the rest of your life with him by your side, knowing many more perfect days like these will follow.
''Ti amo, Robert,'' you whisper before letting sleep take over, and you feel him wrap his arms around you to protect you. And with one more soft kiss on your scalp, Robert falls asleep with you, his beautiful wife, buried under the comforter and into his arms.

so since I can't stop thinking about head chef!Sukuna, let me ramble on about some head cannons I have about him
head chef!sukuna...
mainlines a monster before every single shift, and can be seen paying megumi to run to the corner convenience store to buy another during busy nights
he's on aux, and since the ancient speaker system is ran out of the managers office, his phone is locked in their almost the entire shift and no one else has the chance to change it
beside the two managers, satoru and utahime, but they dont care enough ab it honestly
he literally has no clue how many hours he actually spends doing some sort of work for the restaurant
ex: the many hours he spends up at night working on new menu items, the earlier mornings he spends wandering through local markets and farms, the days off filled with paperwork or recipes or meetings let's not talk ab it he's gonna geta headache again
speaking of headaches- he definitely talked Gojo into letting his little brothers work there as soon as they were able to
but they weren't allowed to work in the kitchen, he didn't wanna have to make them put up with his attitude
his kitchen consists of quite a few chefs, with a lot of lower cooks switching in and out with their intern spots
don't worry, they are paid interns
his main cooks consisted of suguru, toji, aoi, and uraume
he'd worked at quite a lot of fine dining restaurants, having earned a michaeline star for the fifth restaurant he'd worked at by the age of 24
before he took in his younger brothers and settled back into their childhood home, he'd spent about five years working in any fine dining place he could
he'd been cooking since as long as he could remember, quickly figuring that if that was what he was good at and enjoyed, he would dedicate his life to it maybe sukuna lied on a resume or two, but he was gonna get to the top one way or another
somehow his arrogance seemed to work until it didn't; it'd get his foot in the door places, and then it'd turn around and get him fired a few months later
once his grandfather passed, he found himself finding his way back to Tokyo even if he didn't want to
luckily for him, his former classmate Satoru Gojo was managing a failing restaurant with an incapable cook named Mahito
Gojo was more than happy to deal with Sukuna's shit again if it meant keeping his place afloat
they're kinda friends, but it's weird because they're always mad at each other
that's how everyone's relationships with him are, though, and Sukuna's always irritating someone tbh
he has a cat- he found the little dark grey kitten asa stray feeding off scraps she found in the dumpster, so he couldn't help but scoop her up
she seemed sweet enough, but as soon as he fell asleep she nearly clawed the couch to shreds, thus earning herself the name akumu which means nightmare
she was horribly affectionate and vocal, constantly meowing for attention, but only towards sukuna and the brats, she shot dirty looks and would actively hiss at anyone else stepping foot into their house
she's his baby, but that secrets behind closed doors
she sleeps in his bed, she has a plethora of toys and collars, and don't you dare open the treat cabinet— he's not ashamed
his other secret is his back garden it wasnt like a huge secret, but it wasn't something he wanted to share with everyone either
sukuna thought he was going crazy the first time he made a dinner almost entirely from his home grown ingredients because it tasted fucking insane

I know i’ve mentioned this before but dear god please let yourself not only get used to but embrace being inconvenienced. The commodification of convenience and having everything at our fingertips at all times, delivered straight to our doors, is destroying our mental health and sense of community.
During the pandemic there were a few food places near me that were now only open certain days of the week, and this actually stayed the case post-lockdown and into the current day. I know in that case it probably meant struggling business and furloughs, but the fact is slowly I saw more businesses limiting their hours and this made me ecstatic. Like. Yes girl close on Saturdays or Sundays. YES GIRL let your employees sleep!!!
Restaurants that close in the middle of the day and reopen in the evenings. Shops that ONLY do in-store pick up, no delivery. Not picking overnight delivery on Amazon. Driving to a physical store to go shop for a new computer or laptop so you can see it and leave with it already in your hands. Yes these things take more time and effort but like. When I have to take quarters to go do my laundry in my building’s laundry room because I don’t have an in-unit washer/dryer, it gets me up and moving. I see people in the elevator. Someone says hi to me while I’m loading my laundry in. We talk briefly. When the corner store next to me is closed by 6pm on Saturday I either have to plan to go there early, or walk down to the other grocery store a few blocks away. On my walk, I see the beautiful clouds and trees and all the other people going about their day. I see that I am in something, that I am a part of something. If it rains on that walk, I get the very human joy of experiencing being inconvenienced by the very real weather of this planet that we’ve been both blessed and inconvenienced by since the beginning of time. I’m not only part of a community, but an ecosystem. A living environment in conversation with the rest of us throughout history. And that means something. It helps remind me how nice it is to be here. How nice it is to see and care for the people around me, even if it’s just passing by. The ways in which I am fortunate, and the ways in which I am not.
There is of course a seperate conversation to be had about how capitalism has forced a lot of people into needing to take jobs from businesses open 24/7, some people live in remote, unwalkable locations and dont have access to these things in the same way, and of course grocery delivery and other convenient services have done a ton to help the sick and disabled, but please. I encourage you. If you have the means to be inconvenienced in any way, please do so.

I am clean and have shower-mind clarity.
So, there's a CVS right on the corner where That Guy turns to go to work.
They are an open-24-hours store looking for part-time cashiers.
If I could get them to consistently schedule me for 5:30 or 6am to lunch time (I've found that the only way to get that to happen is to set that as your only availability...), that would add about 10-20 minutes each way to That Guy's commute depending on how stupid that intersection is at the time. It can get pretty jammed up during high traffic times.
That does mean I'd need to find somewhere to be for at least 4 hours until he got home around 4.
Now, that's not a problem because that CVS is right on the edge of downtown, and there are shops I could spend time in each day. There's a coffee place, a small handful of restaurants I could get lunch at (pricey, though). There are places I can go. Inside.
Like, I could get a different lunch every day and spend an hour or so in the restaurant, then go do the coffee place for an hour, and visit the gaming store which is a little bit of a walk but that's ok, and there's a succulents place and the kids' consignment that has a lot of AG dolls in the window right now, and there's the food bank I could maybe volunteer at for a few hours just to be indoors...
I would be in the main hub of town.
I would earn slightly less than enough to pay the premiums on an insurance policy each month after taxes.
But I realized that it wouldn't matter because I would still have to apply for the insurance myself since part-timers don't qualify for insurance through work (it wouldn't matter if I managed to find multiple part time jobs, which is another reason being downtown doesn't sound so bad because maybe I could leave CVS and walk down the street a little to another place for another shift...), That Guy still would be claiming me as a dependent, and the whole reason I can't get insurance right now as it is, is because he refuses to consent to the insurance companies verifying his identity.
So either way, again, me working would cost him more money than I'd be bringing in because we'd still be out of pocket on my medicals and I'd be having to buy restaurant food every day.
Though I would NOT need a car, only need a few pair of pants and shirts, one good pair of shoes, wouldn't have to worry about hair and makeup much, and I could take on a small bill or two. Maybe.
-
ooh a full time position popped up....
WHICH CVS in town, though. If it's the other one, then that's a lot more commute for him but it would be full time so I'd be less outside..... The other one's also near the grocery store, etc.
hmmmmmmmm

Road Trip
*good evening everyone! Here's a new story of mine! I also have another story on deck that I should be posting in the near future. Hope you enjoy this one!*
I can’t believe the situation I’m in right now. My girlfriend and I were on a road trip heading to the mountains for a nice, quiet, relaxing trip. Now I’m in a hospital bed in who knows where with a concussion, had my spleen removed, and some bumps and scrapes, while my girlfriend is under a sheet in the hospital morgue. I’m still trying to process everything that’s happened in the past day or two, but I have a lot to get off my chest. But before I tell you how we got here, I want to tell you about my girlfriend. I want you guys to remember her the same way I did, and not by how she died.
Her name was Chloe. She was a few years younger than me. And for reference, I’m 26 and she was 24. Chloe was a cute Asian girl, whose dad is a Vietnamese immigrant, and mother is a Chinese immigrant. She had dark, pin straight, shoulder length hair, chocolate brown eyes, and had a short, petite build. She had a nasal septum piercing, a colorful tattoo sleeve on her left arm, and wore black lipstick a lot, which drove her uptight, traditional parents crazy. They always asked her why she couldn’t be like her older brother Michael who’s a successful programming manager for Microsoft out west in Seattle, which made her feel bad.
But Chloe differed from the rest of her immediate family. Compared to her family’s uptight, traditional ways, she was more open minded, laid back, and had a go with the flow type of demeanor about her. Her older brother Michael was very ambitious and goal oriented while Chloe wanted to pursue her passions and work to live, rather then live to work. She went to college for music, but ultimately dropped out in her 2nd semester, much to her family’s disapproval. Chloe was a bass player and loved focusing on writing music, playing with her bandmates, and worked only to provide money for her passion.
And that’s how her and I met, through work. We both worked at the same hotel together, just in different departments. I work as a maintenance supervisor, while she worked at the front desk. I remember the first time I met her. I was called up to the front desk to take a look at some dripping that came from a vent. I was able to get to the bottom of the issue real quick- it was just a clogged up condensate line in the HVAC vent (something that takes 5 minutes to fix, but most HVAC repair men will have the audacity to charge you $300 bucks for. But I digress!). After I cleared that up, I asked one of my buddies at the front desk who the hot new girl was, to which he told me “yeah, that’s Claire!”, which became a bit of an inside joke between Chloe and I later on.
I started spending more time at the front desk and BSing with her, and found out her an I had a lot in common. As I mentioned, she was a bass player, while I play guitar. It turned out we were both metal heads, she liked pokemon (even had Squirtle as part of her tattoo sleeve) and complemented my Lego collection- probably the only girl in the history of the universe to do so. After we got to know each other a bit, I got her number and asked her out. And let me tell ya, I was very nervous about that first date!
The first date was at this Mexican place she wanted to go to. We got a little tipsy off some margaritas and just talked for hours, eventually losing track of time. The manager of the restaurant actually tapped me on the shoulder and told me they were closing in 20 minutes. But that’s how it should be- 5 hours felt like 5 minutes with her, and I enjoyed it very much! That first date was two and a half years ago, and everything was great in the relationship department from there on.
I felt very content and happy with my relationship with Chloe, and bought a ring, planning to propose to her on this trip, under the guise of it just being a little weekend getaway.
The hotel we were staying at was about 6 and a half hours away, so it was a manageable distance. The two of us got ready that morning and got in some comfy clothes for the car ride. She was wearing her purple pullover hoodie, some black sweats, and her go-to black and white checkered Vans. Even though she was in those baggy, comfy clothes, she still looked cute as always.
I agreed to do the driving there. I was a little tired however! I had to stay at work late the night before because a pain in the ass guest absolutely trashed a room and we had to fix all sorts of stuff. Just an FYI before we continue- if you’re unhappy with your room assignment at a hotel, just leave a bad review or something. Don’t trash the room. Someone has to fix that!
Even though I was tired from my overtime the night before, I decided to do the driving in my car. At first, we were making good time. But around the trip’s halfway point, we started to hit some traffic on the interstate. Chloe and I decided to get off at the next exit and grab a bite to eat, hit the bathroom, and gas up, hoping traffic would dissipate in a little while. We ultimately grabbed breakfast at a small diner, hit the bathroom, and went to the gas station next door to refuel. While I was pumping gas, I was yawning and felt a little tired. Chloe looked up at me and said “hey babe, why don’t I do the driving? You had a long night, you deserve a nap.” She was always sweet like that, but I replied “oh it’s ok hun, I can make it there. I’ll just crash and burn tonight when we get to the room.” Chloe then hopped over from the passenger seat and over to the driver’s seat. “too late mister! Go take a nap!” She said playfully. I laughed a little and told her “hey, I appreciate it. But you don’t have to drive.” Chloe then said “just take a nap babe! I pinky promise I’ll get us there alive.” I ultimately capitulated and thought “yeah, ya know, a nap sounds good!”
After I finished gassing up and paying an arm and a leg, I hopped in the passenger seat, get under Chloe’s baby Yoda blanket, and reclined the seat back. Once we got back on the interstate, all it took was a little highway hypnosis to knock me out. The next thing I remember is totally different. I hear Chloe scream, I heard the brakes screech, and I was thrown forward a bit, waking me right up from my nap. A large 18 wheeler truck had cut us off while changing lanes. Chloe didn’t have much time to react, and she slammed into the back bumper of the truck at a high rate of speed. I felt the lap portion of the seatbelt tighten up over my belly, feeling a tremendous amount of pressure and pain over my abdomen. My head whipped around a bit, making me feel dizzy for a few seconds. Once I regained my mental faculties, I looked over at the passenger seat to see how Chloe was doing.
Chloe was crying hysterically, and had a few cuts and scrapes on her face. I grab her right hand and ask “hey hun, you ok? What happened?” Chloe continued crying hysterically and hyperventilating a bit. “its ok baby, calm down. It’s gonna be ok!” I tell her, trying to be reassuring. “the truck… it cut me off. I didn’t have time!” she cried out to me. “he didn’t signal! I didn’t know babe, I’m sorry!” she continued, tears streaming down her face. “chloe, hun, I’m not mad at you. Are you ok?” I tell her, squeezing her hand, trying to be reassuring. “my chest… my chest hit the steering wheel!” she cried and moaned. She went on to tell me her chest hit the steering wheel hard, then was thrown back half a second later when the airbag deployed. “I got ya baby girl. Does your chest hurt?” I asked her, concerned. “yes… it hurts when I breathe… something doesn’t feel right…” she cried out, shaking her head. “alright. I’m sure help is on the way. We’re gonna be ok. We’re gonna get through this, ok?” I tell her, making eye contact with her. She nodded at me a few times, still crying and hyperventilating.
We were pinned in my car and the doors wouldn’t open. Chloe was pulling on the door handle repeatedly while crying “I don’t wanna die in here.” I placed my hand over hers and told her “nobody’s dying Chloe. We’re gonna get out of this.” She held my hand tight and said “Kenny, I’m so scared….”
I could hear sirens off in the distance, but it appeared our accident created another traffic jam. Minutes went by and it didn’t sound like the sirens were getting any closer. I’m guessing the emergency vehicles had trouble getting through the traffic jam. Several more minutes went by, which felt like hours to the two of us. “is anybody coming for us?!” Chloe shouted. “they’re coming babe. Everything’s gonna be ok!” I tell her, trying to console her again.
Finally, we see a female police officer approach the vehicle on the driver’s side. Chloe taps on the window “HEY! HELP US!”, she shouted. The officer approached the vehicle and got on her radio “hey, I have 2 occupants in vehicle 1. Female restrained driver, male restrained passenger. Both awake and alert. Gonna need the jaws of life. Driver’s side door is crunched up.” “10-4, ambo and fire are almost there.” A male voice on the radio said in response. “see Chloe, they’re here. We’re gonna be ok.” I tell her, feeling a bit relieved help was beginning to arrive.
In the next couple of minutes, more and more emergency vehicles and personnel started to surround us. The fire department began setting up their equipment, and started the extraction process within a few minutes. A loud, mechanical crunching sound surrounded Chloe and I. I could barely hear myself think, but I still had a sense of relief since the first responders were there.
Finally, the door was ripped off, and a few medics ran over to Chloe and began tending to her. They placed a c collar on her, got her on a backboard, and brought her over to a nearby ambulance to begin examining her. A second set of medics did the exact same thing with me. While being pulled out of the vehicle, I could see the medics cutting off Chloe’s purple hoodie, placing EKG leads on her chest, setting up some IVs, and making more of a commotion over her than me. “Chloe?! You ok hun?!” I shouted over, to which I received no response. “hey buddy, stay calm for us. Your girlfriend is in good hands, alright?” a medic told me in a calm tone. They did the same thing with me. They took my shirt off and started setting up a wide range of equipment. “large bruise upper left quadrant. Vitals stable, but they may wanna take a look at that in the ED.” I overheard my medic say to their partner. They shined a pen light in my eye shortly after. “pupils are reactive, but slight delay. Might be a concussion. Let’s get him prepped for transport. The two of them are getting taken to County.” I overheard my medics say.
A little bit of this, a little bit of that, and the ambulance doors slammed shut, and I was on my way. The whole way over, all I could think about was Chloe. She was absolutely terrified, and I just wanted her to be ok. If there was anything serious going on, I would’ve rather it happened to me than her. I looked out the back windows of the ambulance and saw another ambulance right behind us- I knew it was hers. “Please… I hope she’s ok in there.” I thought to myself, watching her ambulance speed down the highway along with mine. I was a nervous wreck on Chloe’s behalf for the rest of the ambulance ride, but I was personally doing ok all things considered.
I remember the ambulance pulling into the hospital’s entrance and pulling towards an entry door. The ambulance came to a stop, and back doors popped open. I could see two sets of people wearing yellow trauma gowns, one group by my ambulance and the other group over near Chloe’s ambulance as it pulled in. “26 year old male, restrained passenger, high speed mvc. Upper left quadrant bruising with guarding and rigidity, possible concussion. Vitals stable. Set up an IV, only gave him a little NS. Refused pain meds.” My medic told my group of people in yellow trauma gowns. I heard a female voice say “thank you, get him to trauma one. The girl in trauma two. Let’s go everyone.”
I was wheeled into the hospital, brought into a trauma room, and moved onto a table. They sat me in an upright position on the table since I was relatively stable and began asking me questions. While I was being asked questions, I heard Chloe crying while being wheeled into the exam room right next to me. “female, 24, restrained driver high speed mvc. Patient is tachy, hypotensive, diminished breath sounds on the left side, muffled heart sounds. Started fluid resuscitation and gave pain meds.” A medic told the group of yellow gowned individuals in the next room. “alright. Transfer her on my count. One… two… THREE!” one of the doctors said, while the whole team moved her onto a table, underneath a large over head light. “chloe? Is that you?!” I shouted, trying to get her attention. “kenny?! It’s me! Is that you Kenny?!” I heard Chloe say. She was on the table in a c-collar and head stabilizer, stripped down to her black sports bra and matching underwear. Her complexion had faded a bit, becoming a few shades paler, and I could see some redness and bruising on her chest, probably from where her chest hit the steering wheel.
“Sir? Look at us, ok? We’ve got some questions for ya!” A nurse said to me. I paused for a second and looked back over, replying “yeah… yeah, of course.” The nurse was holding a clipboard, then asked me “ok! Do you have any drug allergies?” I replied “yeah, just penicillin. It gave hives this one time when I was a kid…” The nurse jotted some stuff down. “ok… do you have any prior medical history? Any history of surgeries?” she asked me. “oh no, nothing I can think of. Never had surgery either.” I replied. She jotted some more stuff down on her clip board, then continued her questions. “can you tell me where it hurts for me?” she continued. “my belly. Over where the seatbelt tightened up. I’m a little dizzy too, but that’s it.” I said to her. “ok, abdominal pain…” the nurse repeated back, thinking out loud. While that was going on, I heard a blood curdling yelp come from next door- a sound I never heard from Chloe before, and one that I’ll always remember. “chest tube’s in, vitals still dropping.” I heard a voice say in Chloe’s room. “what was that? Is she ok?!” I shouted, popping up a bit, trying to get a better view of the room Chloe was in. “whoa whoa whoa, sit back and relax mister. We have to focus on you.” Another nurse said, gently forcing me back into my previous position. I could hear Chloe cry next door. “please… I don’t wanna die…” I heard her cry out, practically begging the doctors and nurses in her room.
While the team in Chloe’s room was running around like chickens with their heads cut off, my team was doing things at a more relaxed pace. The nurses were setting up an ultrasound machine to take a look at what was going on in my belly from the seatbelt injury. While that was going on, I asked “is Chloe gonna be ok? Can someone tell me what’s going on?” One of the nurses replied “we’ll let you know a little later. We assure you, the best doctors in the hospital are taking care of her.” I didn’t have much of a response. They didn’t want to tell me, and there was nothing I could do about it. I was very nervous about how she was doing. Everyone seemed more concerned about her than they did with me, so I knew it had to be something more serious.
I heard plenty of commotion next door over the next couple minutes. While that was going on, my ER team squirted cool, conductive ultrasound gel on my belly. An ultrasound wand was put on my belly and spread the gel around a bit. Then the wand was moved over the area that was bothering me most. I winced in pain, feeling a lot of tenderness while the wand was over the affected area. “splenic lac, but minimal blood loss. His vitals are stable, let’s get a surgical consult and see what they say about this.” One of my doctors said. Just after they said that, I heard “vitals still dropping. Get me an intubation tray! 7.0 ET and a laryngoscope!” At that point, I didn’t hear Chloe crying, moaning, or talking anymore. I looked over and saw Chloe asleep on the table while they were maneuvering a plastic breathing tube down her throat. “trachea might be deviated Cricoid pressure please.” A voice shouted. I saw one person place a few fingers on the front of my girl’s neck, while the breathing tube was finally placed properly. The tube was held in place with some tape, and a light blue ambu bag was attached. “Alrighty, breath sounds present.” One of the nurses next door said, with a stethoscope up against Chloe’s bare chest.
Suddenly, Chloe’s breathing tube became clogged up with a large amount of blood. The heart monitors started chirping and beeping loudly. “suction!” I heard a nurse shout. “no pulse, starting compressions!” another nurse said. One nurse was suctioning out Chloe’s breathing tube while another started delivered deep, violent chest compressions. Chloe’s petite, skinny chest caved in and her belly bounced out from the residual force of the compressions. Her head bobbed and lolled while they tried to suction out the blood from her breathing tube, creating a moving target. A liquidy, slurping sound was heard while the nurse pumped away at my baby girl’s chest. “oh god… come on Chloe…” I thought to myself while watching. “meds are in!” one nurse said after injecting something into Chloe’s IV.
Chloe’s breathing tube was cleared of blood and the ET tube was reattached. But I could see that her pearly white teeth were now stained red with blood. “charging to 250.” A doctor shouted, while an electrical whirring sound was heard. The defibrillator paddles were then pressed up against Chloe’s chest, and a shock was delivered. I watched in horror as my girlfriend’s body jolted so violently on the table next door. “no change, resuming compressions.” A nurse replied, who started pumping her chest a second later. The defib paddles were charged to 300 joules this time, pressed up against her chest, and the next shock was delivered. The same violent, thrashing motion was seen, but Chloe’s eyes opened slightly. But her eyes were completely dull and lifeless, staring up above at the ceiling. Her eyes remained open from then on out. When the resumed CPR, I saw her head bobbing again, with her eyes half open eyes blankly staring off. The next shock took place shortly after a cycle of chest compressions. This time, I saw her feet kick up on the other end of the table and slam back down. When her feet slammed back down, I could see all the deep, soft, silky, prominent wrinkles that permeated the soles of her tiny size 5 feet. I lucked out in that department- Chloe had pretty feet and could’ve made a gazillion dollars on only fans with her cute wrinkly soles if she ever wanted to.
After the third shock, I heard a doctor shout “ok. Get me a thoracotomy tray !” A what? A thoracotomy? What’s that? What’re they gonna do to my girl?!, I thought to myself, my mind beginning to race. Let me tell you, you definitely don’t want to see your girlfriend get a thoracotomy done on them. They made a big cut in her chest. It started at her sternum, they extended it across the left side of her chest, underneath her left nipple, and all the way out near her left armpit. They then cut apart the tissue and fat below her skin. Then they placed a big metal thing inside the cut, and started turning some knobs. I heard a loud cracking and popping sound, and saw her chest become more and more open. After turning those knobs a couple more times, I could see Chloe’s heart in plain sight. But it wasn’t beating, it looked more like it was kind of twitching or fidgeting. The doctors and nurses placed a few things in Chloe’s chest, and then I started to see blood come out of the big cut in her chest, which pooled on the right side of her chest and dripped down to her belly a little. “jesus… what a mess… suction please!” I heard a doctor say. I don’t know what they were looking at, but they didn’t like what they saw. I heard some commotion over the next minute or two, but I’m not sure what that they were doing. All I heard was something about internal compressions.
“Ok, charge the internal paddles to 20.” I heard the doctor say. I heard the same electric whirring sound as the defibrillator paddles, but these defibrillator paddles looked differed. They were these long, skinny things that looked kind of like a giant serving spoon. The placed the spoon part of the paddles around each side of Chloe’s twitching, fidgeting heart, and they delivered a shock. This shock sounded differed. It had a dull, wet, muffled type of sound. I saw Chloe’s torso twitch around in response. “no pulse, v-fib on the monitors.” I heard a voice say after that shock. The large spoon looking objects were recharged to a higher intensity, placed back into her exposed chest cavity, and another shock was delivered. I heard that same dull, wet ka-thunk like with the first one. On the other end of the table, I saw Chloe’s toes curl, showing of her fresh, jet black nail polish and her wrinkly soles that I droned on about earlier.
After I see them reach back into her chest and do who knows what, I’m interrupted by the surgeon who was summoned by my team earlier. The surgeon took a look at my ultrasound, and even though my spleen injury was relatively stable, the surgeon felt the best move was to remove it. The reason is that the injury could potentially get worse without treatment, and they’d have to remove it anyway at that point. I then agree to do surgery, they make me sign a paper, and I can hear my team making calls to the operating room in regards to my upcoming surgery. My team was injecting some stuff in my IV, going over my vital signs, and trying to coordinate with the operating room. After a few minutes of commotion, I’m finally able to look back over at Chloe and see what’s going on.
I heard another dull, wet, KATHUMP, followed by a droning high pitched sound. “that’s it, she’s gone. Time of death, 11:57am.” Wait, what?! Did I just hear what I thought I heard?! “hey, what happened?! Is Chloe ok?!” I shout to my ER team as they start wheeling me out of the ER room and over to an elevator. I start getting ready eyed, with a lump in my throat: “did Chloe die?!” I asked, almost pleading with the doctors and nurses to tell me something. I saw them look at each other, not sure of what to say. “we’re not sure, you’ll find out after your surgery.” I was told. I kept bugging my doctors and nurses to tell me anything they could, and they wouldn’t. Eventually, it was time for my surgery, and that was that.
I woke up several hours later in the room I’m in now. My belly with all sorts of stitches and staples in it- I could probably set off a metal detector with all these metal staples. I felt a little groggy, my mouth was dry, and I was terribly thirsty. I felt a little sore, but it was certainly tolerable. A little while after I awoke, a doctor came in my room. It was a familiar face- one of the yellow gowned individuals in Chloe’s room. “hey! You worked on Chloe! What happened?!” I asked anxiously. The woman sighed, looked down at the floor for a second and grabbed a seat in the room. “so Chloe was hurt very bad in that accident. She had a collapsed lung, and one of her ribs broke off and sliced into her heart…” they told me. “oh jeez. What happened after they took me away? Is she dead?!” I asked, teary eyed. The doctor paused, then said “these type of injuries are usually quite severe. This caused Chloe’s heart to stop beating. We did cpr, we opened her chest, and did everything we could, but her heart just wouldn’t restart for us. I’m sorry, but she passed away in our ER.” I was shocked. I was completely consumed with all sorts of emotions I never felt before, and hope I never feel again. I let out a wail, and began crying like a little baby. What was supposed to be the best day of my life turned into the worst day of my life. I was hoping to propose to Chloe, and now I find out she’s dead. I also began to feel guilty. “Why did I have to plan this stupid trip?!” “why couldn’t I drive the rest of the way?!” “we should’ve waited a little longer at the gas station!” were some of the thoughts consuming my mind.
I don’t know the end result of all this yet. I’m still gonna be in the hospital a few more days myself. I know the ER people reached out to both my family and Chloe’s family, but I have no clue when anyone’s gonna get here. Regardless of what’s to come, I’m glad you all listened and let me ramble a bit and talk this over. I hope you’re all having a much better day than me.

Are there any cool restaurants you'd recommend in LA? me and my boyfriend are going there for our anniversary just to hang out and do something fun.
It really depends on what area of the city you're in and what you like, but here are a few that I always enjoy:
Swinger's Diner in Beverly Grove. A pretty standard, Americana-inspired diner that's open pretty much all the time. I'm here a lot and so are a ton of kind-of famous people. Last week I saw the actress who played Sue on Veep.
Perch in Downtown LA. A bar and restaurant with really amazing views of the city.
The Pantry in Downtown LA. Also a diner. Until COVID, they had been open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week since 1924. They're still open pretty much always, and their pancakes are excellent. Supposedly Marilyn Monroe and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. have both eaten there.
The Apple Pan in West LA. Also also a diner. If you want a burger in LA, this is my favorite.
Saffron & Rose in Westwood. I think this may be in one of my Youtube videos. It's a family owned and operated Persian ice cream shop and the owners are the nicest people ever.
Bottega Louie in Downtown LA or West Hollywood. This is probably the only restaurant on this list where you would actually want to go for an anniversary dinner. It's where I take friends who are visiting. It has a really great vibe, the food is amazing, and the patisserie is great for getting a little take-home treat.
Pho Saigon Pearl near LACMA and the La Brea Tar Pits. This is my favorite Vietnamese spot. Their pho is the best and their strawberry lychee tea is addictive. Nina Dobrev was also there the other day.
Ebaes near USC. If for some reason you happen to be in the USC area, Ebaes is my favorite. It's an asian fusion restaurant and I sometimes drive over there just to get the Ebaes ramen and then go straight home.
Honorable mention goes to In-n-Out, which is a fast food place. If you're from somewhere that doesn't have them, they're worth a visit.
I feel like this is kind of a bad list since none of these restaurants are the kind that you would travel to go to, but they're just genuinely where I eat most frequently. For a list of restaurants that are a bit trendier or upscale, try here.

Rating Every NHL Arena - Crypto.com Arena, Los Angeles, CA
Team: LA Kings Location: Los Angeles, California Opened: October 17, 1999 Capacity: 18,230
The first time I'd been to the Crypto.com Arena was for Elton John's Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour in January of 2019. Back then it was the Staples Center (and still will always be the Staples Center to me and everyone else who lives in Los Angeles) and I wasn't paying too much attention to the place. I was just happy to see Elton John.
The next time I'd made it out to the arena (by this time, I think it was being called Crypto.com Arena) was for my first hockey game and I saw the LA Kings vs the Chicago Blackhawks on March 24, 2022. I wasn't quite into hockey like I am now so I was there for vibes and because it was free. The company I work for has season tickets that they give to clients or the employees, and since my roommate and I work together and she's from Chicago and grew up supporting the Hawks, we went. The Hawks beat the Kings 4-3.
By the third time I made it out to Crypto.com Arena, it was for a hockey game that I was actually extremely excited for. The Pittsburgh Penguins vs the LA Kings aka finally getting to see Sidney Crosby.
I've now been to the Crypto.com Arena 4 times and here's what I've gathered:
Ticket prices range from $35-$1000+. The $1k+ tickets are glass seats with VIP parking and a bunch of other things that are included.
Here's what I've paid so far for what games, what seats, and with fees and such:
Kings v Penguins (11/9/23): $55.13 for Section 315, Row 6, Seat 9 Kings v Avalanche (12/3/23): $43.00 for Section 305, Row 3, Seat 1 Kings v Kraken (12/20/23): $165.25 for Section 113, Row 2, Seat 7 Kings v Blue Jackets (2/20/24): $31.85 for Section 304, Row 7, Seat 3 Kings v Kraken (4/3/24): $140.75 for Section 113, Row 2, Seat 7
Downtown LA is a nightmare- no matter the time or day. I've left my apartment with plenty of time and still ended up arriving after doors opened. I'm about 16 miles from the arena and it can take anywhere from 30 mins (no traffic) to an hour and a half (around rush hour). The area is a pain to navigate, as most downtown areas are with one-way streets and lanes that disappear and reappear as you go.
Parking is easy enough to find though once you get close to the arena and there are a few garages almost right across from the arena, but it'll cost ya around $40 or more. I know there are some surface lots around that might be cheaper but they're almost always cash only so keep that in mind. I'd recommend parking at LA Live or near the Regal at LA Live.
The area around the arena is nice though, with plenty of restaurants, sports bars, coffee shops and anything else you could think of. An ice skating rink even popped up over the holidays.
I'm a big fan of the staff at this arena. They're all very chill and easy to find and can help you with anything you might need, like directions or trying to find something, like lost and found. There is a no bag policy here though, not even clear ones. A wallet is about all you're going to be able to bring in. And their sign policy is very strict (11x17) so make sure you measure before bringing your sign asking for a puck.
This is a newer building, at least compared to the Honda Center, so there are escalators to get you from section to section. It felt like a luxury after only having stairs as an option over in Anaheim.
There are tons of food options inside the arena, with familiar places like a Blaze Pizza or a Wetzels Pretzels- even sushi. They also have those Amazon Markets where you can scan your card, walk in and grab what you want, and then leave. Prices are steep, as I've now to come to realize are standard in these arenas. $20+ for a Coke and a hot dog or a pretzel.
The main team store here felt quite small. It wasn't ever crowded when I'd made my way in there the few times that I have. A good selection of merch though and tons of jerseys. There was a smaller store in the upper level that had a small selection of things, which was nice if you missed the store on the main floor as it felt like it was kind of tucked away.
The bathrooms here were nice. The upper level bathrooms had stalls where there wasn't a gap between the door and the separator. Both Arielle and I were impressed with this on our trip.
As for seating and views, I've sat in the 100s and the 300s. I definitely enjoyed both and I think they have their time and place. I was in the 300s for the Pens game and again when I went back to November to see the Colorado Avalanche. I had a good view in both 305 (Avs) and 315 (Pens) and would sit in either again. The upper bowl is always going to give you that full view of the ice and you'll have a better capability to see full plays develop and not have to rely on the jumbotron.
I had what is almost considered a glass seat for the Seattle Kraken vs LA Kings game I went to in December. Section 113 is right across from the goal and since there's a curve, there's more leg room and the boards are spaced out just a bit further. Since it's not quite a glass seat, they don't charge as much for this ticket. I really enjoyed sitting here and since it was close to a face-off circle, I got to see a handful of face-offs right in front of me. I did find myself watching the jumbotron though when the action was happening down at the other side of the ice.
I will say, a big negative of going to this arena are the fans. I've had more bad interactions with Kings fans than good ones.
With all of that said, I do think I prefer making the trek down to Anaheim (44 miles) to see Ducks games rather than staying close to home and going to Kings games (16 miles), despite the Kings having a nicer arena- the parking and tickets are cheaper and the fans aren't quite as bad in Anaheim.

How do I describe what I like about Chicago? It all comes to me as a mix of scenes, watching the storefronts switch from Guatemalan to Korean to Yemeni walking east to west along Lawrence, seeing the flows of crowds of college students leaving and entering the bars on Lincoln Ave, waiting for the last Metra train of the night in a 24-hour diner right next to the tracks--and these are hardly idiosyncratic experiences in any real city (author's note: I'm not sure if either SF, DC, or Seattle are real cities)
Some of it must be a matter of familiarity -- the streets of cities west of the Rockies are all too damn wide, while all the streets in cities on the East Coast are either too damn tiny or are near-freeways. Some of it comes from the comfort of the building heights -- there's not much for suburban single family housing on the north side, especially as you get near the lake; even the more suburban areas are more likely to be 3-4 story walk-ups. Even though I live a good few miles north of city center, I'm still in a mid-rise apartment building and can see several such buildings out my window.
Some of it is certainly food -- I've not had a proper gyro (where the edges of the meat are crisp and crackly and the inside is thick and wet and spiced) outside of here and it's certainly much easier to find a restaurant that'll serve a half-pound of decent meat here than in Boston, Seattle or SF (also, Chicago's meat foods, like the Polish sausage or Italian beef knock any local meat-between-bread meal out of the park, go suck on your cheesesteaks, Philly). And there feels like there's more options for different cuisines here than anywhere not-NYC -- I really like being able to have a Cuban place and a Serbian place and a Kazakh place and a Nepalese place within a few miles! This isn't even for a lack of good American food -- the burgers here are a significant notch above the Bay, the fried chicken and barbecue are the best you'll get in a Northern city, and I even found a hole-in-the-wall breakfast place that opens at 7am and serves a five egg omelette with bacon and cheese, side of potatoes and rye for under $15!
Some of it has to do with the ease of walking around, people like to make Chicago out to be a dangerous city, and it is dangerous, in the way cities are and suburbs are not, but things feel far more demarcated than they ever were in Boston or the East Bay. I know the local hotspots from just reading reddit (Hermosa, Cragin, Lawndale, largely, for a north-sider, southside is more complicated but I can round it off to "anywhere >1mi from the river and not Hyde Park" and be done with it). In Boston, none of it made any goddamn sense, even just walking up Neponset/Dorchester Ave from Quincy -- things were certainly fine in North Quincy, got sus as I crossed the river, got worse and worse as I went north until I hit the Indochinese district just a bit south of UMass -- and then somehow things get worse again as I approach Andrew, but north of Andrew is completely fine?!! What gives? At least on Chicago I know that outside of the Milwaukee Ave sitch, things generally get worse as you go west and south. Simple as. East Bay, nobody seemed to talk about it, or assumed that if there was ever a problem, the problem was with YOU. So I got some weird signals west of MLK (except for the area near Tamaleria Azteca and Al-Maida, those places are goated), couldn't pick up any new info, there wasn't anything around I was interested in seeing, so I just gave up and learned the areas on Telegraph as well as I could.
A large part of it has to do with the night-scene--there's food-places open after 10pm here, that aren't even bars! What a wild world, coming from Boston and the Bay! More than that, they're often even open after midnight in the hotter areas--what bounty being able to choose if I want pizza, tacos, or a Polish around 1am on a night-walk!
I don't know why I like it here, but I do.

Day 5:
Got some good sleep last night even though I stayed up late working on this blog. It is pretty hard to be consecutive and to log every day, but when I’ve done this in the past, I’ve always been happy. I am doing this so that I can look back on my trip and remember all the stuff that happened. Usually if you don’t write things down like this, you will quickly forget all the stuff you saw and experienced.
Today I only had three meetings, so that was pretty nice. I had my usual 7-Eleven breakfast and even tried the croquette sandwich. I’ve had a lot of these sandwiches from the Japanese store near my house, so I was curious to see what they taste like here.
On my lunch break I went out and did some laundry at a laundromat that I found on Google maps. It was a 24 hour Pl. and had good reviews so I figured I would try to use it. I couldn’t figure out how to use mobile pay or QR code so I had to walk all the way back to my hotel to try to find a different ATM machine pull some cash out. this was probably at 4 am so there wasn’t many people around. The laundromat was actually really nice, and had this tablet display where you could pay for your machines. I needed to wash my running shoes, and was about to put them into a close washer when I looked over and noticed that they had a shoe washer and shoe dryer. Because of course they would.
I ended up having to take a meeting from the laundromat. I stood outside in front of the building and try not to talk too loud so that I wouldn’t bother anyone around in the condos around the laundromat.
After I got my clothes and shoes clean, I went over and had some lunch. The restaurant I found was open 24 hours a day. It was really confusing though, because they had like a deli fridge where I guess you were supposed to pick out food and then they would warm it up and serve it to you. I was so confused that I had to use a translator app to talk to the employee to make sure I knew what the heck to do. I wasn’t sure if the cooking part of the restaurant was closed or something, but it turns out you just had to order it differently than I was expecting. A few old Japanese men next to me were drinking beers and having a great time. Even though I could probably go find nicer restaurants, I sort of like going to the little hole in the wall, local spots, they don’t really cater to tourists. I enjoy that experience more than some fancy place.
After lunch, I worked a bit more and then tried to decide what to do with the rest of my day. After work, I did some more work on Real Estate stuff that I’m dealing with right now. And then for dinner, I found a really nice tiny sushi place. The place was really small. I think they only had about five seat at the counter, and two small booths. you’re like shoulder to shoulder when you eat at the counter. I had a 10 piece sushi lunch which was about ¥1500. The sushi was so good that I decided I wanted to eat more and so I ordered some tekka maki and a couple other pieces. It was delicious. One of the chefs was super old, so you can imagine. He’s probably worked there for a very long time. a couple of older people came in and sat next to me. They were eating the same thing as me. I don’t think I’ve seen 90-year-olds eat sushi before so that was pretty unique.
After dinner, I made this super boiling hot walk back to my hotel. On the way I picked up some mochi from this old lady. I also got some ice cream and a couple drinks too since it was so hot.
Time to sleep so I can work early in the morning tomorrow for “Thursday”
