I have tried my absolute best not to seek financial support online especially when our our collective focus should be aimed towards the welfare of our Palestinians, Congolese, Sudanese brothers and sisters. I have truly consider countless options before resorting to asking for monetary assistance but I no longer have the means to keep myself alive and my little family Following my father's death almost four years ago due to colorectal cancer.I diagnosis late last year with stage 2A breast Cancer.

a failing hard drive (and a mental health revelation)

(the data seems to be safe now)

(this post is about two things which feels a bit weird but the point I want to make is somewhere where both things overlap)

a lesson I learned from this:

back up your data! do it now! yes, NOW!

it started a few weeks ago when I changed linux distro from suse to arch (though it also started earlier. human starts are hard to define. me and my neurodivergence and my pc and hard drive and my mental health struggles that most if not all nd people have in some form didn't just pop into existence when I started installing arch).

I had unplugged two of my drives to protect the data on them from any mess-ups during the install process. (I should've made backups, yesterday evening would have been less scary that way).

the installation went fine, but it took a few days due to mild lack of sleep and me not using archinstall, but I succeded. (and after accidentally uninstalling the login manager on my laptop and briefly reprioritizing to fixing that because I couldn't get the gui to launch manually without the login manager)

and I was proud of my setup. one minor thing, the drive my /home folder (that's where the user accounts' data is) started its off-on spiel it sometimes did when the cable wasn't plugged in properly. (at that point it had not seemed alarming. I had unplugged it prior and was already familiar with this happening)

it had messed up something with i3, I rebooted, it was fine. I knew what drive it was because I can hear its whirr and the clacking of the head going into its off position when it turned off. I love how it sounds. that I can hear how it is 'alive'.

so I opened my pc, unplugged the drive and plugged it back in. and it was fine for a few days.

after it had happened (or maybe only after the 2nd time it happened on arch) I also looked up if there were tools to assess drive health and installed the smartmontools package. I do not know if I would have been a bit slower in noticing when my drive started to fail, maybe the sounds alone would have worried me enough. quite possibly not. ultimately the s.m.a.r.t. output got me to start a backup of the raw data though, but not by actually warning me directly of imminent failure. it estimated about 20000 more hours of use (edit: that is untrue. I just misinterpreted something).

I think it also went off-then-immediately-back-on a few more times before and after that; but that and the following were the two instances that caused my OS tho struggle before the hard drive failed.

after the second time it happened, upon rebooting, the drive would just do its off/on routine while fstab was trying to mount it on 2 consecutive reboot attempts but failed. mildly panicked I booted the live arch usb I had previously installed from and tried to figure out what to do. I didn't back up my data then. I should have. I had planned to set up backup automation then but not yet got around to doing so. I should have done so.

it was unlikely to be the cables' fault, but yet again I unplugged the drive and plugged it back in. yesterday I found out why that was futile. it did its off/on routine after I'd tried getting a more taxing game to run, but i3 was fine, and so I continued, mildly worried. the second time it happened, not long after, I checked the s.m.a.r.t. data. Because I'd sent all the interesting bits of the data to someone the day prior, I was able to look up how it had been before. still, it estimated about 20000 more hours of drive use (edit: that is untrue. I just misinterpreted something). but the count of PhyRdy->PyNRdy was off the charts. from about 300 in a prior power cycle it rose to above 18000. then, eventually it even reached 19000. online advice on this was: back up your data. now.

and so I did, finally, back up my data. the easiest option with now ramping up andrenaline (and a cold I was still recovering from) was using dd. I made sure the infile and outfile were the right way around and off I went, copying all the disk contents to another disk. (or rather, the contents of the partition I was mainly using)

it went ok at first. then the occasional off/on, going by how the drive sounded. ok, I hope you make it, buddy. please, at least long enough to save my data.

then it wasn't just clack-spin-down-fully-then-spin-up-again. it was stumbles, the clack sounded different, had different timing, it didnt spin down fully before spinning up again. (for clarity: by spin down I refer to the motor inside reducing in speed until it is off, like when shutting down my pc.)

the copying stumbled. a bit past halfway it stopped. i/o error. disk dump (dd) had exited. smartctl just told me "inqury failed". my os seemed to think the disk was still there. it just wasn't responding. not presumably unmounted this time, just not responding. the last temperature readout had been a bit above 40°C. high, but it should be fine, right? the PhyRdy -> PhyNRdy statistic was 19806 at last readout. my hard drive was definetely failing now. dying.

I called someone with more IT experience than me; adrenaline was definitely kicking in now. we opted to shut down my pc and try getting the rest of the data after waiting 20 minutes. giving my hard drive a break. it did not make its usual sound when shutting down. it must've spun down at some point before and not spun up again. I braced for the worst, for the first half of the dd to only contain the data I've had older backups of and for the rest to be lost.

my hard drive had just needed some rest. ddrescure came to the rescue, I copied the remainder of the data with not many auditory "complaints" by the hard drive. then turned off my pc to unplug that drive. it could rest now. it had done its part. I no longer needed to fear that my data would be lost. as of writing this I'm combining both halves of the backup on it into one file to mount it and see if my data is intact. odds are looking good but I should make sure. (as of my 2nd draft I'm mounting the file. fingers crossed.) (as of finishing the 2nd draft of this fsck reports the backup's filesystem as having a bunch of errors. I hope my data is salvageable. mounting the file worked but that is a lot of errors from fsck. gonna do a full ddrescue now.) (the ddrescue is nearly finished; the two halves should be recombinable now, ddrescue just has important syntax differences compared to dd. my data is most likely safe.) (the data backup seems to be fine now!)

I miss the way that hard drive sounds. I miss hearing it start. I miss its hum. I miss the hard drive that, quite literally, made my pc home. I only was at home on arch once I had moved my user data to the new home directory. (finally it wasn't my deadname anymore. being trans was now, accidentally, a way to keep my suse and arch user accounts nice and separate)

/home was home, and now it was failing. dying.

how odd, to be feeling (slight) grief for a hard drive.

and now for the mental health realization:

I've anthropomorphized that hard drive in some places in this post. while it was actually failing I was somewhat doing that most of the time (you can make it, buddy! please, please just try to keep going a bit longer. once my data is safe you can get a break.)

and I realized why that is.

one part of it is just that I have the tendency to anthropomorphize things, like the chocolate snowman who I found out had a name only after I had already eaten it. I felt sad, and a bit silly. I'm never buying chocolate with a name like sammy again.

but there's more to it; and it isn't coincidence that I am putting this in a post about a failing hard drive, rather than that chocolate snowman. not only did I humanize that hard drive when it was "struggling" - I also do it the other way around: taking "schedule maintenance or the equipment will schedule it for you" also as a reminder to take the breaks I need because when I need them they will happen eventually. so I better listen to my body and take breaks when it isn't already a bit too late.

I'm treating myself like the machines I humanize because when treating myself as human what sneaks in is treating myself as someone who should be this good little neurotypical girl. treating myself as who I learned I should be instead of treating myself as me.

treating myself as human has failed somewhat. between being trans and being ace and being neurodivergent, I'm not human in the way I was taught I should be. and with this baggage, I need a better angle at this to be able to take care of myself in a way that will allow me to heal.

I stopped trying to view self-care through my neurodivergent mask. it's not this vague lifestyle thing. it is the basis of my well-being.

I started viewing it as 'self-maintenance'. maintenance is important. it is basis for continued operability. that much is simple. it is specific to what is being maintained. I couldn't exactly have treated my hard drive as a dripping faucet. it would have been nonsense for me to try and save my data from my windows installation which I'm much less experienced with. (and besides, it's windows. I actually use OS as an analogy for my neurodivergence sometimes, I do think it works in many aspects. there are many different linux distros. mine takes a bunch of extra work but works better for me.)

it would be nonsense to try treating myself like a neurotypical person. because I'm not. and it would be nonsense to view this "self-maintenance" as something to do only whenever I've got time between my failing hard drive and uni and having gotten sick. it is important.

short bonus bit - the magnus archives has helped me cope with the fear I felt for my data a bit. and since it continues being an intense interest of mine I'd like to discuss that. just beware of spoilers, I'm not sure off the top of my head when the concepts I'm talking about below stop being spoilers

it is interesting that one of the hypotheses of what is going on with the failing hard drive is that the temperature is somehow why that drive is failing - considering the lightless flame is all about things like this data loss. so hi desolation, I hope to never meet you again. please do not cause the digital equvialent of a housefire (overheating(?) /home) ever again.

running the full ddrescue now, it seems putting a cold pack next to it calmed it down. poor thing really was suffering from heatstroke at normal operating temperatures it seems

This is a very interesting question- and I’d like to preface it by saying there’s no “wrong” way to write a character! I’m happy to show you my personal methods, though!

(If you’re having trouble writing dialogue, the wiki has lists of quotes from all the characters! It been super helpful so far!)

Also, following requests and suggestions, I have very tentatively added a few bots to the “Limited” section on Janitor AI. If they do well and people are interested, I’ll add a few more.

As for making a bot…

The literal most important part of any bot is the Description. Here’s how one of mine looks:

{{user}} is, obviously, the user’s name! It’ll autocorrect to the name of your current persona, and if you aren’t using one, it’ll use your profile name instead. {{char}} is the bot itself!

So when I write:

-{{char}} worries and checks their forehead-

A similar chat will go like this-

The bot will draw on their descriptions more than anything else- but there’s a major drawback- of the 32000 characters accepted? The bot will only register the first 3200.

Which I certainly did not know before I wrote 18000 characters for this definition!

Also, though you’re meant to drop a short summary of your character’s personality in the Description box, there’s not much space to expand upon them.

So I find it useful to just place a longer, much more detailed summary in the Definition section.

Aside from these, the Greeting! The way you write this will do the heavy lifting in dialogue through the chat! If the Greeting has typos and poor punctuation, so will all the messages that come after it! If you write your actions in ellipses, the bot will follow through with that! Make sure to “start a new chat” every time you update a greeting so you can see if you missed something!

Also, if you’re using the mobile app? You’ll only be able to write 500 characters for the greeting. On the site (which you can access through your phone), it’s boosted to 2048- I find this much preferable.

Aside from that, it all comes down to writing!

@gege-wondering-around I am so, so sorry this has taken so long – as usual. Life is chaos but I really appreciate the ask! You’re so kind and so lovely and your answer was perfect I hope I can do this justice! Diolch yn fawr iawn and here we go

Family. – One member in particular keeps wandering around singing Life is a Highway very badly and offkey and I just love it! It’s so cosy and fun and I just love it when things are calm enough that people can relax and be themselves. My cat (called Busy) also makes me smile. She’s a floozy cat and loves attention.

Writing – I’m working on something for my absolute best friend which has a bit of a story behind it. It’s a Sterek Au that came about because I went back home. I grew up in among those strange rural small towns where everything is a bit weird and a little left of reality. I was in the local supermarket and for some reason in the back rooms they had this section absolutely chock full of plaid shirts so I snapped a pic and sent it to my friend for fun as a Stiles reference. And from that we just kind of ran with this strange Sterek, small town au where all sorts of strange, odd, supernatural things happened. So, of course I had to write it for her. But I write REALLY slowly. It’s not going to be finished any time soon but it’s 18000 words so far! Anyway, it’s purely for fun and full of joy and bittersweet things and it makes me smile SO much. Have a snippet! He can see it now. He’s going to become a cautionary tale. Parents everywhere will tell their children all about the dangers of running off to find themselves and all because he got lost in the woods and eaten by a bear. My what big teeth you have and all that. Wait – that’s little red riding hood. Maybe he’ll be eaten by wolves, not bears… That would be exactly his luck. Especially when there are famously no wolves in California. What was the moral of that story again? Something about not trusting strangers? Never leave the path? Something else about… not… going… for a walk in the woods… alone? Fuck. Stiles runs an anxious hand down the front of his favourite red hoodie. Double fuck. There was no way he was little red riding hood. The universe wouldn’t be that cruel, right? The colour of his jacket should have no bearing on the likelihood of him being eaten by a wild animal. Absolutely not. None, whatsoever. Nope. Incidentally, has anyone done any research on whether bears are attracted to certain colours more than others?

Adventures – I love exploring and just seeing new places, near or far. It doesn’t really matter where but show me a quiet road surrounded by tall trees and I am just giddy with happiness. I love driving too so that helps!

Music – this is one of the things that I live for. I love how much music can give you, from inspiration, to pure feeling, vibes, joy, drama, beautiful poetry. It’s everything and it’s got everything! Kindness - I’ll shout out to people on Tumblr too. I love seeing people be themselves and owning their weird, whatever it is! That always makes me smile – especially when something good happens for someone I follow. I loved what you said about kindness too. The words I try to live by are be curious and have compassion. Everyone’s going through something and the world can always use a bit more kindness!

Things that scream love from miles away (loved this question!)

Friends – I have two best friends who are the complete opposite of each other and I love them so much. They keep me going and whatever’s going on, they can always make me smile.

I’m moving away from them both which is breaking my heart a bit but something they both do which, to me, screams love from a distance is they’ll just send me things.

One friend sends memes and funny videos

The other shares her day and sends me pictures of what she’s doing.

I love this so much because its just I saw this and thought of you! It’s quick, it’s sweet, its thoughtful and it just means so much to me that they are going about their day and they take the time to think oh, I thought you’d like this! Now my phone is full of their lives and it makes me so happy.

I try to reciprocate  as much as possible but everyone always says my love language is bread. I’ll often bake bread for my friends to pass on when I see them although I realise that might be harder these days. Posting bread doesn’t seem like the best idea…

I’ll also do a small shout out to my husband here, as we’re talking about things that scream love. We met about 14 years ago when I was 18. I saw him across the room in a crowded bar on my first day of Uni and it was love at first sight. Still can’t explain it to this day. He was just my person.

Mesoamerica

The precolonization time periods of Mesoamerica, which covers modern-day Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador and parts of Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica are divided into different periods than those in Europe and the Middle East. During the Archaic period, permanent settlements were established, followed by pottery and loom weaving, allowing class divisions to begin to appear. Trade networks also developed, within short distances at first, then further afield, for stones like obsidian and chert (a fine grained sedimentary rock formed of microcrystaline quartz).

The Classical period was defined by the independent city-states of the Maya and the beginnings of political unification of central Mexico and the Yucatán. Differences in regional cultures manifested themselves until the city-state of Teotihuacan began to dominating the Valley of Mexico, though we don't know much about the culture of the area due to Teotihuacanos not having a culture of writing. The city-state of Monte Albán dominated the Valley of Oaxaca. Though we have some of their writing, we haven't been able to decipher it yet. They did leave a highly sophisticated artistic culture as well, which spread through the area.

The Postclassical period saw the collapse of many of the great nations of the Classical period, though the Oaxaca, the Maya of Yucatan (such as the city of Chichen Itza and Uxmal), and the Cholula continued. This period is thought to have seen an increase in warfare, though there were technological advancements in engineering, weaponry, and metallurgy occurred. There was also a lot more movement and population growth during this time as well, especially after about 1200 CE, and experiments in government. The Toltec dominated in the 9-10th centuries then collapsed. The Maya united for a while under Mayapan and the Oaxaca under Mixtec rulers. The Aztec Empire rose in the 15th century and began conquering the Valley of Mexico. This was also the beginning of a renaissance of fine arts and sciences.

The Spanish conquest of the area was aided by native people who wanted allies against the Aztec Empire. After this, much of the culture of the area and many of the people were destroyed by the Spaniards.

The 18 THOUSAND Winter Magic Grind: My Rant On What the Fuck SSO Is Doing.

Hi, I just want to preface this by saying; I love this game and how it has progressed! I absolutely love a lot of the updates that have been put out, and I love so many new horses and I (to other’s surprise) love a lot of the devs’ decisions. It’s really a hit or miss with me. But I don’t tend to complain about every little thing. I love SSO, and I’d like to say instead of this being a “complaint” I’d rather call it fan feedback and a simple critique. Anyways, now the actual stuff you’ve been waiting for.

I’m a person who actually LOVES to grind in games. When I get free time, I’ll go to grind on my favorite game for anything I want. In fact, I once spent 20 hours total (not in one day don’t worry) just saving up for some things I wanted in RDR2O just by hunting bison. So it’s safe to say I enjoy grinding and do a lot of it. I’ll just pop on my favorite Mo1stCritikal or Jerma stream, and get to grinding!

But the Winter Magic system has stumped me. It is nonstop grinding for the jaw dropping number of 18000 winter magic. And I think it’s fucking ridiculous. Here’s why:

It’s a Limited Time Event

I think I’d be alright doing or simply knowing that the Winter Magic grind is out there to do if it was always here. But it isn’t. The Winter Magic is only here for the Christmas/Winter update, which I find insane. It gives not much time for players to grind for (keep in mind) 18000 FLOATING SNOWFLAKES THAT USUALLY ONLY COME AS ONE AT A TIME. Some players really don’t have the time for that. And it’s just..annoying.

It’s Just Boring

Like the bullet says: It’s just boring. The Winter Village is just dull and sad this year. It lacks color. It’s just..dull and sad looking. It’s hard to grind because my mood just drops. I just get bored and depressed. I usually just stop or get off SSO completely after ten minutes of it. And I’m someone who can spend HOURS at a time grinding. I just can’t do it for the winter magic.

The Rewards (seriously star stable. what is this?)

I want to say I love the gifts from under the tree this year! They’re very generous and the outfit is cute! But the Winter Magic rewards. You do so, so much for such a small seeming reward. It just isn’t motivating to keep going. I think I’d work through the boring, lack of charm, sad substance the Winter Village has become if there was good rewards. But..there just isn’t. It just feels derogatory to the player as well.

These massive golems resemble a walking funeral pyre, though one that burns hotter than any in the mortal world. They are created by devils with a pyromaniacal bent, and in fact can only be successfully created in the Nine Hells, with special clay found only there. They are not mindless, but are unsubtle either, preferring to burn their foes to death as directly as possible, blasting them with fireball and flame strike spells while closing in to melee.

Summary:

A rugby AU in which George Russell is the captain of the Formula Ruby team and has to deal with pre-season training, which turns out to be harder than he first thought. One of the main reasons for this is the tension that is still left over from the Ruby World Cup and the ongoing difficult relationship between French players Pierre Gasly and Charles Leclerc whilst trying to form a coherent team. George is also questioning the state of his relationship with Alex Albon (they get together in the end), and the issues surrounding the future of the English Ruby with the former coach Christian Horner getting fired. It’s all a little bit of a mess. However, it works out in the end, with the team winning their first game of the season, and James Vowels takes over the role of England team coach. The overall vibe of the whole thing is that it is a little bit messy but they are all trying their best to be dealing with feelings and the many issues surrounding teamwork.

Author Notes + Warnings:

So despite the fic surrounding the idea of rugby, there is no mention of anybody playing rugby. Instead, it focuses on all the little ins and out of the rugby team, the personalities within the team, how they bounce off each other, and the friendships and relationships created within it. Each section is set up as a different day, following the 5+1 format. Visuals include • A lot of blues and reds, which made up their team kits. (Their shirts, their shorts, their studs and mouth guards.) Each player has his surname and number, which is included in the list at the top on the back of the shirt. I don’t have an idea of what the team badge looks like, but happy to leave that to the artist. 

• There is a lot of focus on the team kits, both their countries' kits and their team kit. • The training kits are similar blues to their kits with blue trainers. • There are also a lot of greens with the pitch during the training seasons, whilst the match at the end is muddy with a lot of mud all over the place. • Each player also has a red suitcase and holdall. Each player also has a little keyring reflected in their personalities, e.g. Alex has a cat whilst Oscar has a koala.

Eventual Max/Daniel/Lando with established Piarles! Lots of angst and hurt/comfort, and lots of the group getting to know each other again.

as angsty as this is it's also an undercover love story. the bond between the Monaco four is strong, but they want Max there as well, even if he doesn't realize it. Graphic description of violence, blood, guns, killing for survival, food insecurity/food problems due to post-apoc setting, and gunshot wounds.

Summary:

This is an AU Universe where the F1 Grid (teams, drivers, etcetera) are all in a spy universe. This is the first story apart of said universe! Growing up, Alex Albon and George Russell were inseparable best friends. From boarding school to junior spy training, they always stuck together. But while out on their first mission in Belfast, a miscommunication occurs and they fail their mission due to a serious mishap that ends with a deadly consequence. With this, the two's friendship is broken when Alex is sent down to Williams, banned from field service and stuck to a working as a Secretary for while George has been upgraded to a full-time field Mercedes agent, carrying guilt and regret on the inside while constantly on the go. David Coulthard is an oil tycoon, planning to promote his eco-friendly oil to motorsport, and eventually the entire world at the Silverstone Grand Prix. Spies are sent to both protect and investigate the event; including Alex and George. Not to spoil anything major, but while at the proposal, major shit behind the scenes goes down and suddenly Alex and George are reunited with a ten year old girl in their hands. Both are accused of the major shit going on behind the scenes, and are forced to go on a cross country trip in hiding. They are accompanied by tech-savvy tech guy Nicholas Latifi and former French agent Alain Prost, who's hiding many secrets behind his sad eyes. Together, they must embark from outside of London all the way to the Scottish Highlands while being tracked down. Not only is it a mission to save the world, but it is also a mission of reunification. Author Notes + Warnings:

It's not prominent in the story, but there are themes of racism in the workplace, stereotypes, eating disorders and, mental health issues. There will also be graphic depictions of violent and major character deaths. These will be warned beforehand.

This story is enemies to lovers in its purest form. The main settings are hotel rooms, Charlie's apartment in Northampton and Fernando's house in Lugano, Switzerland. Scenes that I believe can be illustrated, in a way, are the two nights in Imola, as well as their meeting in Charlie's apartment, specially the encounter between Fernando and Ron. On the other hand Sebastian is charmed by the zeal in how Charles approaches the mundanity in their everyday lives, but he doesn’t allow himself to see Charles as a romantic interest, fearing that it is a line he shouldn’t cross. In the background, Kimi and Pierre have formed a relationship of friends-with-benefits, and they both grow more and more exasperated by how their respective best friends are idiots in love that won’t admit their feelings to each other.   Also, there's a lot of shirts that get destroyed. Not meant to be a sadfic in any way! The vibe I'm going for is cute fluff and salaciously humorous with a side of exasperation -- 'Why can't Charles and Seb figure out that they like each other and ride off into the sunset instead of Charles mending Seb's ripped shirts like the housewife he is, sighing wistfully as he watches Seb ride a horse wearing just chaps and nothing else?? Because Kimi is sick of seeing them pussyfoot around, but Pierre just shakes his head and leads Kimi into the hayloft for a quickie to distract him from the disaster that is Seb and Charles'.

Heavy on the bonding through mutual discomfort with emotion, lots of Charles getting Max coffee and making sure he eats and just generally taking care of Max. Also, heavy on the whirlwind Christmas romance vibes, buying each other little presents, meeting family members, easily-preventable misunderstandings and repressed emotions galore.

The general vibe I'm going for is semi-Christmassy romcom, with the majority of scenes taking place in their office, except for one notable trip to Paris.

Artist Notes + Warnings:

The majority of the fic takes place in the lead-up to the Christmas period, so lots of Christmassy vibes. Also, a business trip to Paris where there ends up being only one bed (oh no...how could this happen).

Max is Charles' boss, and therefore in an inherent position of power over him. However, Max is very aware of this, and at no time is Charles coerced into anything through this power differential or made to feel uncomfortable. The rating of the work is going to be explicit due to some sex scenes, but also due to Charles' incredibly thirsty internal dialogue.
