DIR EN GREY in Taiwan: a hellish journey as beautiful as a nightmare, as real as a letter written in blood

After nine years, DIR EN GREY finally returned to Taiwan. Following the conclusion of their U.S. tour, they kicked off their Asian leg on May 10 at Zepp New Taipei. This stop of the “TOUR25 WHO IS THIS HELL FOR?” was titled mode of VULGAR, and while it was centered on the 2003 album VULGAR, the setlist served as a condensed retrospective of over 20 years of career: a deep exploration of their musical roots and a frenetic ritual that stared straight into the abyss of human nature. With “pain” as its core, DIR EN GREY remains a symbol of both visual kei and extreme metal—dark and beautiful, violent yet filled with hope.

Crossing boundaries of nationality, gender, or age was no obstacle: fans gathered to experience this intense performance, where pain and hope intertwined like a scream etched into the bones.

The five members of DIR EN GREY emerged amid passionate screams. The night opened with “人間を被る” (2018), a sonic explosion that marked the entry into their spiritual realm. It was followed by “The Devil In Me,” a new song accompanied by its music video—a dialogue with deceased criminals and inner demons.

Next came the iconic “DRAIN AWAY,” unleashing a frenzy among fans, who sang through tears and laughter. In “13” (from the album PHALARIS, 2022), Shinya’s drums sounded like a beast on the march, while 京 (Kyō) writhed on stage like a cursed flame—clearly evoking the brazen bull on the album cover.

The emotional descent deepened with “禍夜想” and “The Perfume of Sins,” where 京 (Kyō)’s piercing high notes and the floral projections created a dreamlike and distressing atmosphere. The ballad “朧” played under red lights and visions of a bloody childbirth, detaching the audience from reality.

Without pauses or MCs, they attacked with “VINUSHKA” (UROBOROS, 2008), a harrowing epic that condemns war, even projecting images of atomic bombings. Yet, brief glimpses of the band members added visual flair: 薫 (Kaoru)’s avant-garde hairstyle, Die’s flowing hair, Toshiya’s charisma, and Shinya’s elegance.

The heart of the show brought the essential “かすみ” (from VULGAR), with 京 (Kyō) improvising over the melody. The red mic cable looked like a living vein transmitting his voice straight to the audience’s soul. It was followed by “audience KILLER LOOP” and “OBSCURE,” experimental pieces far ahead of their time. With this album, 京 (Kyō) abandoned the title of “vocalist” and proclaimed himself a “prophet,” breaking away from traditional rock roles.

The final songs before the encore were “落ちた事のある空” and “Eddie” (PHALARIS), performed at hellish speed. The crowd screamed, pumped their fists, and released years of emotion. 京 (Kyō) threw down the microphone and left the stage.

For the encore, 京 (Kyō) appeared without makeup to perform “CHILD PREY,” featuring a new electronic intro and visuals that retained its original futuristic essence. Everyone sang with raised fists, unleashing long-restrained feelings. Then came “THE IIID EMPIRE” (VULGAR), an explosive political critique that fused rage and sorrow.

With “鱗,” 京 (Kyō) used his operatic tenor voice to embody the twisted mind of the oppressor. To close, he shouted, “Taipei! The last song!” before unleashing the brutal “詩踏み” (2016): riffs like saw blades, vocals like gunfire. Even as the screen marked the end, the crowd kept screaming, hoping for a second encore. As they exited, a piano instrumental version of “アクロの丘” played—like a final caress for the soul.

Hello people of tumblr and GOTG fans, big rant incoming from your friendly neighbourhood autistic Kraglin fan, even though it probably wouldn’t matter to the average fan, it does still grind my grapes, enjoy :).

One thing that really boils my breadsticks is the fact that in endgame Kraglin has the smaller fin, keep in mind he inherited the taller fin at the end of GOTG 2 and we even see him have it on in the pre credits scene with Drax. For the sake of anyone reading this the three fins will be referred to as smaller fin (GOTG 1-2 with Yondu), prototype fin (GOTG 2 with Yondu), and taller fin (GOTG 2 onwards with Kraglin)

Yondu had the smaller fin in GOTG 1 and until (00:42:00) in GOTG 2 when Nebula shoots it off, then at (01:05:07) we see Groot retrieve the prototype fin from the drawer with the help of Kraglin, which then leads to the scene when Rocket installs the fin to Yondu and we get the “Come a little bit closer” scene, Yondu keeps this prototype fin all the way through the film, even being buried with it on. Now at (01:48:53) we see the Yaka arrow get destroyed during the battle with Ego, yet at (02:02:16) when Peter gives it to Kraglin, he explains that Rocket reassembled it.

Now we don’t get an in canon explanation as to how Kraglin gets his own taller fin, yet it can be assumed that since Rocket helped install the prototype fin, it would make sense that he also created the taller fin.

Now from all movies (except endgame) and merchandise that I could find Kraglin had the taller fin:

Now for Yondu he has a mix of both yet for the smaller fin there’s only a few I found:

Even in what if when Nebula has the fin it’s always the taller fin.

So Kraglin having the smaller fin makes ZERO sense, now you may be thinking “Kraglin wasn’t in endgame, what is this person on about?” You’re right he wasn’t (still salty about it) yet from the r/marvelstudios subreddit we see behind the scenes photos of him with the smaller fin, and even on RDJ’s instagram post we see him again with the smaller fin.

So why in all media from when Kraglin inherited the fin onwards where it has always been the taller fin, why in this one instance is it different?

Rosemary Kirstein’s “The Steerswoman”

For decades, scammy "book doctors" and vanity presses spun a tale about how Big Publishing was too conservative and risk-averse for really really adventurous books, and the only way to get your visionary work published was to pay them to fill your garage with badly printed books that you'd spend the rest of your life trying to get other people to read:

Like all successful grifts, this one worked because it wasn't entirely untrue. No, mainstream publishing isn't filled with corporate gatekeepers who relish the idea of keeping your brilliance from reaching its audience.

But.

But editors sometimes make bad calls. They reject books because of quirks of taste, or fleeting inattentiveness, or personal bias. In a healthy publishing industry – one with dozens of equal-sized presses, all commanding roughly comparable market-share, good books would never slip through the cracks. One publisher's misstep would be another's opportunity.

But after decades of mergers, the population of major publishers has dwindled to a mere Big Five (it was almost four, but the DOJ blocked Penguin Random House's acquisition of Simon & Schuster):

This means that some good books definitely can't find a home in Big Publishing. If you miss with five editors, you can exhaust all your chances with the Big Five.

There's a second tier of great publishers, from data-driven juggernauts like Sourcebooks to boutique presses like Verso and Beacon Press, who publish wonderful books and are very good to their authors (I've published with four of the Big Five and half a dozen of the smaller publishers).

But even with these we-try-harder boutique publishers in the mix, there's a lot of space for amazing books that just don't fit with a "trad" publisher's program. These books are often labors of love by their creators, and that love is reciprocated by their readers. Then there's last year's surprise smash hit, Shift Happens, a two-volume, 750-page slipcased book recounting the history of the keyboard. I own one. It's fantastic:

Then there's the whole world of indie Kindle books pitched at incredibly voracious communities of readers, especially the very long tail of very niche sub-sub-genres radiating off the woefully imprecise category of "paranormal romance." These books are landing at precisely the right spot for their readers, despite some genuinely weird behind-the-scenes feuds between their writers:

But as Sturgeon's Law has it: "90% of everything is shit." Having read slush – the pile of unsolicited manuscripts sent to publishers – I can tell you that a vast number of books get rejected from trad publishers because they aren't good books. I say this without intending any disparagement towards their authors and the creative impulses that drive them. But a publisher's job isn't merely to be good to writers – it's to serve readers, by introducing them to works they are apt to enjoy.

The vast majority of books that publishers pass on are not books that you will want to read, so it follows that the vast majority of self-published work that is offered on self-serve platforms like Kindle or pitched by hopeful writers at street fairs and book festivals is just not very good.

But sometimes you find someone's independent book and it's brilliant, and you get the double thrill of falling in love with a book and of fishing a glittering needle out of an unimaginably gigantic haystack.

Holy moly is this a good novel! And yeah, there's a super interesting puzzle in it that I won't even hint at, except to say that even the book's genre is a riddle that you'll have enormous great fun solving.

Randall wasn't kidding about the book's package. The type looks to be default Microsoft fonts, the spine is printed slightly off-register, the typesetting has lots of gonks, and it's just got that semi-disposable feel of a print-on-demand title.

Without Randall's recommendation, I never would have even read this book closely enough to notice the glowing cover endorsement from Jo Walton, nor the fact that it was included in Damien Broderick and Paul Di Filippo's "101 Best Science Fiction Novels 1985-2010."

But I finished reading the first volume just a few minutes ago and I instantly ordered the next three in the series (it's planned for seven volumes, and the author says she plans on finishing it – I can't wait).

This book is such an unexpected marvel, a stunner of a novel filled with brilliant world-building, deft characterizations, a hard-driving plot and a bunch of great surprises. The fact that such a remarkable tale comes in such an unremarkable package makes it even more of a treasure, like a geode: unremarkable on the outside, a glittering blaze within.

Ended up a touch Aeryn-heavy this year, though Generic WoL, various NPCs, the other OCs, forays in the FC's AUs, and some supporting family cast members make appearances. There's even a callback to a previous FFXIV Write entry. Lots of Endwalker and Dawntrail due to recency bias, but it manages to span the spectrum from backstories through various expansions.

I only did 1 Free Day, due to having 2 solid ideas I ended up writing for that prompt. It was right at the end of my annual birthday vacation week, so I was pretty rested (may also be why they're among the longer entries!). Unusually, the rest of that week's works are not any longer than the others.

I'm also still working on some original writing, though, so that did cut into fanfiction time.

Total: 20,382 words. Not my shortest but far from my longest. Comparing with the previous years, I can see a clear improvement in my grasp of both NPC and OC voices, and more confidence in general.

Even so, "Butte", "Sally", "Bar", and "Zip" were the hardest for me this year, and I may need to warm up to them. I love "Halcyon" for a lot of reasons, and am also fond of the lighter offerings in "Duel" and "On Cloud Nine." I like a lot of the others, particularly when trying to get into NPC heads (even if they're really weird places to be ffs, Zenos).

Not too many shippy entries this year, one of them for one of the AUs, one mostly talking about it rather than seeing it, but I like "Hackneyed" a lot as it's been awhile since I've written about Aeryn & Thancred's literary tastes (and opposite ways of treating their books).

These will eventually be revised and added to Ao3, and then we await next year!

—Lily's first serious addiction, literally her first love, they started dating in 2013, when Lily was still in SM ENTERTAINMENT and God, she was only 14, and Sana was 17. Their relationship lasted three years, Lily grew up with Sana, she so grateful! they are very good and close friends now. They broke up because they both grew out of this relationship, but they are on excellent terms!

–They met on the set of an advertisement, then Seungcheol himself came up to meet Lily, they were very nice to each other! they talked for a very long time before starting a relationship, it was so comfortable and good. Seungcheol always supported Lily, when SKZ debuted, he tried to help with promotion. Lily is very grateful to him. We broke up due to misunderstandings and several major quarrels.
