National M&M Day
Enjoy the rainbow of candy colors surrounding delicious bits of chocolate in a bag of tasty M&Ms!
History of National M&M Day
Invented in 1941, these tiny little bits of candy coated chocolate have made a huge impact on American history throughout their more than 80 years of life!
The inspiration behind M&Ms started during the Spanish Civil War when Forrest Mars Sr. (of the Mars Candy Company), who lived in England at the time, began making small bits of chocolate with a candy shell coating that would keep them from melting as easily. Following this inspiration, M&Ms were created by the Mars Candy Company and these little candies have brought joy to millions of people over the years.
During World War II, M&Ms were made exclusively available to the United States military who provided them to their soldiers. Packed in cardboard tubes, these heat resistant and easily transported candies became part of the US soldiers’ rations during the war.
But it wasn’t until 1950, after the war, that M&Ms finally got their now iconic little “m” stamp. After copycat companies came about, M&Ms customers were encouraged with a marketing program to “look for the ‘m’ on every piece”.
In 1981, M&Ms became the first candy to ever go up into space! The very same reasons that these little candies were handy for wartime rations also made them perfect for travel into space. NASA’s first space shuttle, Columbia, took the little candies out of the earth’s orbit and into space.
Now, National M&M Day is here to pay honor to this candy that has been so much a part of American culture and is certainly beloved all over the world!
How to Celebrate National M&M Day
A myriad of fun ways can be found to enjoy and celebrate National M&M Day! Try out some of these ideas:
Enjoy M&Ms Candies
On this day, grab a bag of M&Ms to have as an afternoon pick-me-up or a snack after dinner. While they are perfectly delicious when eaten on their own, they can also make a great addition to trail mixes or even sprinkled on top of ice cream.
Don’t forget when eating M&Ms that many different options are available, including the plain M&Ms that come in the classic brown package or the peanut version that comes in the yellow bag. Other options that have been a hit over the years include peanut butter M&Ms (orange bag), Crispy M&Ms (blue bag) or mint M&Ms (green bag).
Share M&Ms Candies
The great thing about National M&M Day is that these little candies are perfect for sharing! Grab a huge bag and take it to the office to pass around to coworkers. Or get a large container of the mini bags to send to school with the kids in celebration of the day.
Bake with M&Ms
These little pieces of chocolatey rainbow goodness are excellent when used as an ingredient in baking. Try them out as a substitute for the chocolate chips in cookies or add them to granola and create some no-bake granola bars. M&Ms are also great when eaten with popcorn or added to a brownie recipe. The options are virtually endless for National M&M Day!

#OTD in Irish History | 13 October:
1494 – Poynings lands at Howth and summons a parliament to Drogheda. He then campaigns in the north. 1566 – Birth of Richard Boyle, 1st Earl of Cork, in England. Also known as the Great Earl of Cork, he was Lord Treasurer of the Kingdom of Ireland. Boyle was an important figure in the continuing English colonisation of Ireland (commenced by the Normans) in the 16th and 17th centuries, as he…

The vibe of election day today - local governments only - is completely different from the national and European ones in June. Not only is the weather colder; for the first time since 1983, going to vote in Belgium is not obligatory.
As I cycle to the polling place, the change is notable. Four months ago, multiple groups of people were walking the streets, election notification in hand. Today, they are few and far between.
When I arrive, the contrast is even starker. No long queue awaits me. The schoolyard that I have to cross to get to my polling station is void of people, bar a single bright-vested person who smiles at me because she has nothing else to do.
A single moment brightens the day. As I'm leaving after casting my vote, a family arrives. Their younger child, in her seat on the back of the bicycle, recognises the place as her old nursery, which brings a smile to my face. And as I'm putting my scarf away and unlocking my bike, I hear their older one say, "Look, barefoot! That's a little weird."
"Yeah," I reply pensively and cheekily, "that is kind of weird."
And as the adults around us laugh, he hides his little face behind his father's legs.

Mistigram: you have your choice of two rather contradictory sartorial occasions to observe today -- it's both Suit Up Day and No Bra Day at the same time! (Which may make it "just another Sunday" at Fetish Night, who knows.) Either way, AdeptApril shows the way forward in #ANSIart.

The Brooklyn Dodgers playing football at Ebbets Field, October 13, 1940. No, not those Dodgers. At that time there was a pro football team with the same name as the ballclub. To make matters even more confusing, there was also a New York Yankees football team that played at Yankee Stadium, and, of course, a New York Giants football team, although it no longer calls the Polo Grounds home.
Brooklyn won this game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, 21-0. Do they call it a shutout in football?

English Language Day
English Language Day is celebrated on October 13 to commemorate the day Parliament was opened for the first time by a speech in English, in 1362, rather than in French. The day also celebrates the universality of the language, and how it has evolved over the centuries. Scholars believe that there is no true version of the language, as over 7,000 variations of English can be found in the world right now. English has also adopted many words from other languages. Other than speech, English has also become the primary language for movies and TV shows, literature, and music.
History of English Language Day
The English Project launched the world’s first-ever English Language Day on October 13 in 2009. English Language Day is celebrated to commemorate October 13, 1362, when Parliament was opened for the first time by a speech in English, instead of French. In the same Parliament, a Statute of Pleading was approved that allowed members in debate to use the English language. This made English the official language of law and law-making.
English is a vast language. There are more than 250,000 words in an Oxford Dictionary — minus a lot of technical, scientific, and slang words. English is probably the only language with as many synonyms for many of its words, largely because of its enormous absorbing capacity — borrowing words from as many languages as possible, including German, Greek, Portuguese, French, Latin, and even the language of the colonies where it became widespread. Years of colonialism meant that English now also had words from Asian, the Caribbean, and African cultures. The English language has always been eager to adopt and adapt words and phrases from other languages. The willingness to adapt itself is probably what makes English so different from other languages, such as French.
The English language is easily the most broadly used and spoken language on the planet, and it enjoys a good reputation for adapting words, concepts, and cultural influences from around the world. This adds to the language’s enormous vocabulary, one that is full of odd rules, spellings, and grammar. English Language Day remembers and celebrates the incredible popularity of the language and even its eccentricities!
