So what are your HCs for Heresy-era acceptance of trans Space Marines?

Well since someone is asking me >:D

IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER: This post may talk about subject relative to transphobia and sexism. I am myself nb afab, so not fully in the trans umbrella, but I think it's the kind of things that is important to talk about, as representation is like... Borderline non-existant in the larger 40k narrative.

But, without further addo: How much trans space marine (and also female space marine are accepted!) Are accepted in each legions!

Dark Angels: No. Vagina are icky and gross and they cannot deal. They stay between MANLY CIS MEN who like MANLY THINGS. Very sexist too

I actually have interesting ideas about the 2 and eleven and one day I'll get to it.

Emperor's Children: Even before the heresy, they barely had any understanding of what a gender was. Fabius Bile is a pro a gender affirming surgery too don't @me. Trans, nb, female.... They got everything, and they are probably the one of the only legion that continue to encourage their astartes to continue to explore that part of themself all throu their life

Iron Warriors: Women are annoying (opinion of one manchild Perturabo) and have no place in the army. Surprisingly, he fully understand that someone would want to be a man, because clearly they are better. Stupid annoying woman. Open to trans astartes, but you know their is a lot of discrimination happening behind the scene.

White scars: Mongolian hordes on Terra had a long traditions of woman warriors, and I don't see Jaghatai changing that. He has Sons and Daughters, and changing one gender is as simple as deciding on it. Legit do not get half the issues his other bros have.

Space Wolves: See, this one is... Complicated, because it goes with a lot of scandinavian/viking believes of women role in society. They would accept trans astartes as "warrior women", even if it's missgendering. Tho, they would often be confined to less combat role.

Imperial Fists: No. It's not even sexist or transphobic, they will often gladly accept those people as human crew and support... But... They just don't see the point on giving a different treatment specific astartes.

Night Lords: To everyone surprise.... A TON of female/trans astartes??? A solid 35%, wich is by far the highest rate. The fact that their tactic are often stealth based and usually require lighter, smaller astartes does help immensely. They don't really care for gender as rule. If you can flail someone alive, your in.

Blood Angels: I have the hc that Sanguinius is also deep in the egg, and as such, would try to be as accomodating as possible to trans astartes and female ones sadly, he already has such major problem with his gene seed, I could see it become extremely unstable in afab people, to the point were it almost never work. Still he would let those that truly wish to try attempt it.

Iron Hands: Flesh is dumb and mean nothing. The important is what you are deep inside. Super pro trans right. Still, they don't really get female astartes, just by the hyper masculine nature of their legions.

World Eaters: not that many trans or women join, but they are fully accepted and welcomed with open arms.

Ultramarines: Ofc they can, and they are eligible to hormones therapy and gender affirming surgery, in 80 to a 100 working days, as mentioned in page 763 paragraphe 6 of the manual-

Death Guard: Ok, wacky headcanon time. I always HC Mortarion as intersex, and as such, I could see his gene seed actually working a bit too well in some case. It's rare, but cis space marines sometime start slowly changing sex, wich can cause extreme distress. In the same vein, they have a LOT of trans space marine compare to others, and a surprisingly high amount of trans women marines.

Thousand sons: Magnus is an agender pile of warp goo... He barely gets why its a big deal in the first place lmao. Any sorcerer good enough can change their sex, and do it for others. His gene seed, however, has a tendancy to be unstable in afab, like Sanguinius... As such, he sadly decided to exclude any afab, ashe didn't want them to suffer for something that would fail.

Sons of Horus: He didn't even think of accepting woman or trans people, until someone else started doing it. He has nothing against it! But he might do some casual sexism/transphobia like "but are we sure that they are strong enough?" Sanguinius wooped his ass and he started doing it, even if its much more an exception than anything.

Word Bearers: No woman, or trans, or gay allowed That means you Argel Tal. Very strict on it, for religious reasons. Coincidently, they are the legion that fuck the least.

Salamender: already, Nocturn culture does not encourage woman/trans to join. Of the rare that do... They usually are encouraged to join their crews. Salamander need to be of a certain level of pure power to keep up, and sadly, in their experience and opinion, women/trans folks usually don't end up as bjg as they should be, and can slow down a squad.

Raven Guard: First, Corvus is a trans woman in my hc, so ofc they are chill with this. They are probably the only legions, with the ultramarine, to have also strict anti-discrimination policy. The one with the highest rate of women/trans folks.

Alpha Legion: Gender is irrelevant. So irrelevant in fact, you may change it a few time for various missions. Outside of the battlefield, they are actually very chill and gender affirming.

.... I realised I made a LOT of the chaos legions really queer positive, but, in my defence, accepting the difference is a big theme in quite a few of them. That, and it was very important to me to show a range that, it's not just the Slaaneshi/Emperor's children that are related to those subject, as gender and queerness should not always be seen in a sexual manners. They are just... People.

Furuba autistic headcanons

With it being April, or autism acceptance month, I wanted to finally drop my list of characters from Fruits Basket that I read as autistic! This is based a lot on my own experience, as well as that of other autistics I know or have seen talk online. I hope some people can get something out of it, feel free to tell me what you think 😊, though please refrain from getting upset that I would dare suggest your fave is autistic.

Hanajima

Before becoming able to better control her powers, she would be constantly overwhelmed by the things she heard to the point that she couldn't even really go out in public. This reads a lot like sensory overload.

Constantly picked on in school because other kids thought she was weird. Eventually reclaimed this weirdness and turned it into a whole persona.

Seems to talk usually in a relatively flat tone.

Had trouble socializing with no friends outside her family until middleschool.

Has a very funny, dry sense of humor that I find very similar to a bunch of autistics I know, including myself.

Hatsuharu

Listen. You have seen the funky little man, you have seen the way he talks, the way he acts around others. He is, and I mean this in the best way, a weirdo. I do not know how you could look at him and see a neurotypical.

Once again, like Hana, Haru is funny in a way that feels very autistic.

Very flat, dry, tone delivery. Sometimes just Says Things that make everyone else go huh??? Suuuuper blunt. Doesn't emote facially a lot of the time.

When this man sees a social norm he doesn't get he WILL NOT follow it. Pierces his ears just because his hair got flak, defends Momiji wearing whatever he wants because sometimes y'know the social rules are just dumb and don't make sense. Especially dress codes.

Sometimes says things not befitting the current tone of the situation.

Represses (masks) a lot of his emotions, leading to outbursts that seem uncharacteristic.

His main childhood trauma revolves around adults branding him as "dumb" and ridiculing him. Haru, however, is super smart and wise!! Just in an offbeat way that not everyone may get.

Machi

Reads as very "flat" emotionally to the point that others would call her boring. Also has a flat vocal delivery.

Relies on specific habits or ways of doing things or else she gets super upset (her hatred of imperfection.

Has trauma surrounding adults completely misconstruing her intentions and thinking she's doing something malicious when she's not.

Generally behaves in a way that's hard for others to understand, one of her formative moments with Yuki was him saying he wanted to "see how the world looks" through her eyes.

Once again, trouble socializing.

Tries super hard to please her parents but in the end they still see her as somehow inherently "defective."

Listen. A lot of this one and the last two are mostly vibes, hard to verbally define. You just have to look at them and trust me.

Tohru

Displays behavior very reminiscent of masking throughout the story, a huge part of her arc is about how she hides a lot of herself and has a very controlled persona. I think it would fit very well if she had other autistic behaviors that she suppresed also it helps explain why she is relatively socially adept, it's learned behavior to make people like her more.

Yes she is very good at saying what others need to hear, but especially early on she is pretty blatantly imitating her mother's words. She only gets better at getting through on a more personal level later on (see her with Rin and Akito v. early series Tohru). She does this by relating her own experiences, a very autistic way of showing empathy that often gets us written off as self centered. The way she relays things her mom said could also be seen as this, and she even worries at a few points that she's being insensitive for going on about things like that.

While emotionally repressed she is hyper empathetic and feels other's emotions so strongly she cries.

Her speech patterns are all imitated from her father and she often copies verbal things from others (see Ritchan-san). Noted in canon that people think her way of speaking is slightly off/not befitting of someone her age. Additionally, her father was polite more sarcastically, while she plays it straight and sometimes takes things very literally or fails to get the message, indicating trouble with reading tone. Has numerous strange verbal tics, including saying parts of her internal monologue out loud without context.

Very expressive with her hands including waving them around and flapping them up and down.

Does have a bit of trouble with accidental insensitivity in social interactions, like how she constantly fixates on her mom and realizes that might bug the Sohma.

Has trouble paying attention in school since it doesn't have much to do with her interests

Her only friend until she was a middle schooler was her mom

Has a pretty unique outlook on things compared to others, people seem to think she's pretty eccentric. There's always a "this girl is nice but in an odd way, she's our weirdo and we love her" vibe.

Sometimes has an "inappropriate" emotional response to situations

Has a lot of trouble with change, similar to Akito. Which oh, look at the time, next hc coming up.

But first, a disclaimer. It is cathartic for me to read Akito this way, but with that reading comes the baggage that she would, mayhaps, be showing a more negative side of things... It doesn't bother me since it's a joint hc with other characters and she does develop at the end but yeah, general villain hc baggage. This is in no way me trying to excuse her being The Worst being autistic doesn't absolve you of being able to do wrong . Also, a lot of these points can and do have other explanations related to her upbringing, but things can be for more than 1 reason. With that said, she really strongly comes off as autistic to me, in a way that's sorta hard to explain. I wrote a lot more for her than the other, both because I felt I needed more to convince people and that this headcanon was more sensitive and I needed to be careful in my explanation. Also hey! She's my special interest within a special interest.

Akito

Shown to have a dislike of summer weather due to heat and brightness, could be due to sensory issues in tandem with sickness things. Also covers her ears when people raise their voice sometimes which is partially her trying to shut down opposition but also 🤔 can read a different way. She'd also avoids louder Juuni like Ritsu and Ayame because she can't handle them.

Wears pretty much the same outfit every single day. Said outfit is also pretty loose fitting.

Always seen sitting in a pretty unconventional way. Evidence:

Of course this is also the isolated in a cult thing and there is a level of her purposefully doing things to intimidate but: doesn't follow a lot of social rules (overly touchy with strangers, legit doesn't get that what she's doing is wrong, ect.). Repeatedly confused when people indicate she should act otherwise without explanation. Has a breakdown when this comes to a head and approximately says that "they" shouldn't expect her to know "common sense" if "they" never explained it to her, that the way that she was was her "common sense."

Often talks in a way uncharacteristic of her age when shown as a child in a more faux mature/pretentious way. Might just be the translation and idk how to explain it but her speech as an adult also seems off from what one would normally use in conversation. Additionally, when she tries to fake being friendly in her intro chapter, it comes of as extremely stiff and unconvincing.

Generally displays behavior that could be thought of as childish as an adult, but a lot of this behavior could also read as autistic (covering ears, emotional deregulation and meltdowns, ignorance of basic social norms, ect.). It's also important to note that she knows that this behavior makes her seem younger and more helpless to the older zodiac and uses it as a manipulation tactic. Has issues regarding people treating her like a child or only hanging out with her because of pity. While she does weaponize it, we can tell that this grates on her, as seen with her finally blowing up on Kureno, which is partially triggered by the maids saying some sorta infantalizing stuff about her. Irl, a lot of autistic adults and teens struggle with being infantalized for our behavior generally or treated as little babies that can do no wrong. Even in fandom, you see people doing stuff like jumping to call autistic adult characters, such as Entrapta from Shera, "minor coded." It is also common for us to have at least one bad experience with someone hanging around us out of pity. This is something that really gave me a similar feeling in Akito's arc. She's not a baby and she can understand and do better if she is given the chance to learn and break from all the freaky cult indoctrination she's been subjected to instead of just being constantly enabled. In the end, a lot of her growth is represented by her showing that she is capable of changing and being independent.

Shows particular difficulty with socialization, often sits by herself spacing out at social events. A lot of her fear is rooted in the fact that she doesn't know how normal relationships work, becoming overly reliant on the curse because she doesn't know how to make friends.

Clings desperately onto the notion of being "special" and in some way superior to others to be worthy and to make up for perceived inherent "flaws." It's the nd gifted kid burnout vibes for me.

Easily bothered by things that don't bother others. Feels emotions very strongly to the point of getting physically ill and has bad emotional regulation.

Relatively good at reading others in an analytical sense (though has more trouble when it comes to seeing how they feel about her since she's wildly delusional) but brings up her observations in a very cold, detached way and hurts people even on the rare occasion she didn't mean to. Has extreme trouble connecting to others and understanding their point of view. This makes her come off as pretty unempathetic even though that might not fully be the case. Also thinks that people like Momiji are trying to look down on her when they try to empathize with her. A lot of why Tohru can get through to her is that she manages to convince Akito that she's not condescending by relating shared traits and experiences. As I said earlier, autistics often empathize by sharing their own experiences with someone, and I know I often have an easier time confiding in other autistics because of a fear of being seen as lesser by those that don't understand me. I think the connection between these charachters and the way that Tohru manages to reach Akito like that while others couldn't makes a lot of sense through an autistic lense!

Additionally, when Akito herself gets around to trying to help others instead of just projecting trauma, she tries to reach out to the old maid by relating back to her own experiences. This however, doesn't work.

Has "cold" emotional reactions sometimes even to things that do make her upset. For example, how sort of calm and detached she acted after her father's death can make her seem uncaring. However, we know that this event did mess her up a lot and she is still (poorly) dealing with a lot of grief from the death of her father years later.

Copies mannerisms from others, the most blatant example is with Ren, who she directly parrots lines from as a child to Yuki.

Partly just her posturing, but gestures a lot with her hands when she talks. Also seen several times clutching her hands in her hair.

Deals extremely poorly with the idea of things changing to the point that it is a driving force of the story.

Does not understand when people tease her.

Ect. Ect. Ect. Listen, I could go on for ages but just trust me, the mean gremlin lady is autistic.

Headcanons for ADHD characters Masterlist

I was asked for this a while ago and I feel this is a good discussion subject because the canon representation for ADHD is kind of abysmal and is often a caricature or a joke.

usual disclaimer, I'm not a therapist, this is not a diagnosis tool, just for fun, etc etc...basing this on my own experience/knowledge with ADHD and meeting a lot of ADHD people IRL. I'm going off the main symptoms first (inattention and/or hyperactivity, restlessness, impulsivity, problems with emotional/focus regulation, daydreaming, messiness, hyper-focus, fidgeting etc) and then looking at character traits that are not a necessary symptom but often associated (substance abuse and addiction, need to please, sensitivity to rejection, compassionate and creative, thrill seeking, very imaginative, charming and witty or withdrawn and shy or angry and irritable, whimsical and fun and a bit child-like, out of the box thinker, self esteem issues, unstable life, comorbidity with anxiety and depression, very intense feelings, functions better with adrenaline/in an emergency, disregard for rules and problems with authority OR extreme compliance, codependency, perceived as weird, clever in an atypical way, problems in school, extremely good at one specific thing, etc)

BOOKS :

The 'fits to a T so I'm seeing it as my personal canon' list :

note : doesn't mean that the authors actually meant to create representation but it's very likely they at least got inspired by people who did have ADHD (even when the diagnosis itself did not exist) and explained it with 'it's just their personality' OR the story happens in a setting where the label doesn't exist as such. also not meant to be exhaustive.

- Helen Burns (from Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë) One of Jane's school friends from the start of the novel, fits the inattentive type to a T : she can't seem to focus or learn her lessons, is constantly daydreaming, describes herself as messy and careless, forgets rules, and is easily distracted. She talks constantly about her own 'defective nature' and seems very sensitive to criticism but incapable of changing. She doesn't defend herself against the nuns' harsh punishments as she thinks she deserves them. She's presented as kind-hearted and compassionate, almost too good for this world, and hyperfocuses on her faith. Apparently sb even wrote an academic article on this. She dies so it's not super fun representation but it is interesting to see in an older book, to push back against the idea that ADHD was invented yesterday by Big Pharma lol.

- Grantaire (from Les Miserables, Victor Hugo) Part of the student revolutionary group Les Amis de l'ABC and resident skeptic, does not believe in the cause but is fixated on the group's idealistic leader (and yeah it sounds very gay, they die holding hands, there is a lot of Symbolism). He spends his time ranting about things that are only vaguely connected, is described as brilliant but incapable of sticking to any one profession or hobby, is an alcoholic, has a creative streak (was a painter at some point), likes wandering around the city, has massive self-esteem issues and is a general mess but does seem to care about his friends. This is not a very flattering portrayal as Grantaire is described as morally deficient but again, interesting in an old book. ADHD!Grantaire is a popular take in the modern fandom (i was in it before I was diagnosed it brought up a lot of Things) and it's very cathartic to see him get actual therapy in fic lmao.

- Luna Lovegood (from the Harry Potter series) JKR sucks but this is probably the most high profile case of a possible inattentive ADHD character so I didn't want to leave it out. She's a daydreamer, she is a big space cadet and seems to live in her own world, she has a very out of the ordinary sense of style, she's bullied for being weird, but she's also very kind and perceptive and cares a lot about her friends, and good at coming up with out of the box solutions. I wouldn't call it good representation, she's described as a wacko whom a lot of characters find cringeworthy but she's also pretty heroic, so. And she does seem to hyperfocus on magical creatures. Plus her father could also have it (and it runs in families).

- Jasper Fahey (from Six of Crows duology, Leigh Bardugo) Part of a young group of thieves with a heart of gold, he's a charmer and a compulsive gambler who quits college and incurs debts so massive he stops talking to his father out of shame. He's also an extremely talented sharpshooter and the scenes where he describes how the whole world slows and the rush of adrenaline when he is shooting sound like hyperfocus to a T. He's a loyal friend but also quite dependent on Kaz, the leader of the group, to keep him in line. He's witty, messy and he likes danger. His boyfriend later in the series, Wylan, is dyslexic and the way they learn to accommodate each other's issues honestly makes them one of my favorite couples ever. I need to reread these books and I am so stoked for the series I hope they do Jasper justice.

- Julian Diaz (from Cemetary Boys, Aiden Thomas) Love interest of the book, introduced as the 'high school resident bad boy', energetic motormouth who can't sit still and actually very endearing, has issues in school and gets bored easily, main problem is that he's a ghost...sort of. The whole thing was very cute and I love that Julian's personality is described as fun and attractive instead of annoying (which is, if you haven't noticed already, a pattern).

- Evie O'Neill (from the Diviners series, Libba Bray) She's a flapper in 1920s New York who ran away from her boring little town to make a life for herself ; she's a party girl and an impulsive thrill-seeker who hates standing still and is always looking for excitement to 'fill the void'. She craves fame and attention and pretty things, she can be a loyal friend but is also frequently self-centered and forgetful, she's street smart, resourceful and very charming and witty. She's also grieving, drinks too much and is definitely depressed. She's obviously meant as an archetype of the era, caught between trauma and excess, but it does come over as very hyperactive ADHD as well. Her powers to read objects also really pinged me as a good metaphor for the ADHD tendency to be overwhelmed by details.

The 'bit more of a reach but there's a vibe' list :

- Emma Woodhouse (from Emma, Jane Austen) Frequently cited as a character with ADHD, I didn't come up with this one but she fits. She's daydreaming, easily bored, has flights of fancy and hyper-focuses on matchmaking, is a bit impulsive and thrill seeking, clever in an unconventional way, described as a bit immature, mix of caring and self-centered.

- Ronan Lynch (from the Raven Cycle, Maggie Stiefvater) Ronan just has Neuroatypical Vibes, even though it's not entirely clear what, and I've seen people label him all sorts of things which is very valid. As for ADHD, he's restless, impulsive, likes to Go Fast and do street racing, he has very strong emotions he doesn't know what to do with, and big self esteem issues esp. at the start, is very all or nothing with people, snarky, drops out of school to be a magic farmer, problems with authority, looks like a scary mean goth but is actually a big softie (but like, with a few people), pulls shit out of his dreams. Is kind of dependent on his best friend at the start too.

- Sherlock Holmes (from the eponymous series by Arthur Conan Doyle) Again a character who has been diagnosed with all sorts of things. The biggest ADHD vibe for me is 'my mind rebels at stagnation' and the way he needs drugs to function outside of the thrill of a case, and the way he hyper-focuses on information he needs to be a detective while completely ignoring common knowledge. Also sort of dependent on his best friend Watson and isn't great at social interactions. Doesn't care much about upholding social conventions either. The RDJ adaptation is the one that has the most ADHD vibes to me.

- Harley Quinn (DC Comics/Movies) Big codependency issues (that's arguably the thing she's most known for) and sadly people with ADHD are often prone to getting into abusive relationships. It depends on the story too but she's very energetic, zany, impulsive, she likes shiny things and bright clothes, she's fun and chaotic and likes to break the rules, she's a criminal but she does seem to have a heart, she's also frequently immature and rash, etc.

Once you're done with the entire show, could you maybe do sorting for all the characters? I usually know the house for each character, but I have literally no idea with The Untamed. WWX for example I can equally see him as a Gryffindor, Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff and my brain hurts trying to decide.

First of all: I'm so so sorry anon! This took ages to answer! I hope you're still out there to read this! I started answering ages ago and then trailed off because I had to think about it. So here goes:

Thank you so much for this opening! I LOVE sorting non-HP characters into Hogwarts houses!! And for some of these, I’ve already done so in my head ages ago :D

Disclaimer: I’m mostly going off live action canon here, but will make some comments about the novel from time to time.

Disclaimer 2: Obviously, these are extremely subjective. If anyone disagrees, I would love to hear your counter arguments! I love discussing these things!

Wei Wuxian

GRYFFINDOR!

I know you said you weren’t sure but in my book, he’s a textbook Gryffindor. I’m not saying he doesn’t have Hufflepuff or Raveclaw traits (his sense of justice and his “out of the box thinking” kinda genius come to mind), but those aren’t the main drive of his actions imo. WWX follows his confiction and he often does so without even considering a second option or a compromise, especially before his death. And he is not afraid of deviating from the law or societal expectations to do so. This alone could also make him a Slytherin. The reason I wouldn’t place him there is the way he acts very much in the open. He doesn’t try to bring about change by quietly working in the background. He openly calls people out on their bullshit, even when it is clearly to his disadvantage and might just come back to bite him in the ass. Imo, WWX is a brilliant example of how a gryffindor might be driven to doing some very questionable shit given the "right" circumstances.

Lan Wangji

Now, he’s a different story. I have a lot more problems sorting him, maybe because he is not our point of view character. And he's the reason why it took me so long to answer this ask. My conclusion might be controversial, so let me work up to it. Slytherin? His most slytherin trait, imo, is his determination and drive, which I think stems, among other things, from a desire to prove himself. However, I believe his main reasons for this were family loyalty and (somewhat headcanon territory) the rejection he must have felt at his parents absence. And I don't see him as cunning either, as that always carries a certain level of deceitful intent, even if it's not malicious. And deceitful? That's one thing lwj certainly isn't. So, Slytherin is not a good fit for him. Ravenclaw maybe? He is certainly very intelligent, but that intelligence is more due to his studious nature and his focus, imo. And wisdom and out-of-the-box-thinking are not traits I would associate him with, especially in his younger years. So gryffindor then? He is certainly brave in many ways. He is enduring and stubborn, both gryffindor traits. But he also someone who takes his time to arrive at decisions, unless he is under extreme emotional duress (losing his mother or the love of his live). His bravery, to me, seems to be deeply rooted in his deep deep devotion. He goes through extreme, long lasting pain for the few people he holds close to his heart. In the end it all comes down to his heart, his loyalties, his devotion. Ironically, even more so in the book than in cql. And that loyalty, that steadfastness, that devotion is extremely hufflepuff.

So here you go:

Lan Xichen

Aaaahhh! Now I really like the idea of the twin jades of hufflepuff. :D and Lan Xichen is a bit more obvious right? He certainly has the intelligence of a ravenclaw, but his defining characteristics are his devotion to his duty, his kindness, his fairness and his willingness to carefully consider all sides. A hufflepuff to boot. No wonder, I love him so much.

(And now I can't help but imagine lan Xichen, welcoming his little brother at the hufflepuff table, beaming with pride. And later, making sure that they eat at least 1 meal per day together because he knows his brother doesn't make friends easily, even in a house as theirs. Until there's a certain rebellious and bright eyed gryffindor, with a penchant for DADA ...)

Jiang Cheng

He, too, gave me a hard time sorting him. Ravenclaw, I discarded immediately. Gryffindor came next. He's definitely brave in his own way. Going on after the devastating loss of his entire family is brave beyond anything I can imagine, but his motivation why he did it, I believe, was a mixture of family loyalty and his competitiveness and drive to prove himself worthy. Thise are hufflepuff and Slytherin traits, respectively. I would tip the scale towards the latter, simply because his inner conflict is so defined by his feelings of inferiority, his feelings of never living up to his parents expectations. He's in that weird place of being both extremely privileged and emotionally neglected. It reminds me of Draco, come to think of it. So, my favourite angry grape, I'll place in ...

SLYTHERIN!

Jiang Yanli

With her association with cooking and motherly love she seems to be a rather obvious hufflepuff. She is certainly brave, too, enduring her family's near destruction and moving on, or standing in front of her adoptive brother and defending his place in her family and in society. But again, it's very much tied to the people she loves. So yeah,

Nie Mingjue

The jock to end all jocks and still he's got a heart of gold. He's kinda the cliche gryffindor and I can't find a reason to not place him there. So *head barely touches him*

Nie Huaisang

If the twist at the end didn't happen, I'd have placed him in Ravenclaw, as it is, he is such a quintessential Slytherin and also, just ... my favourite kind, especially in cql, where he just fuvjs off to paint his fans and leaves others to do the heavy lifting. He got what he wanted, revenge for his beloved older brother. It reminds me a bit of Horace Slughorn (minus the people collecting). He doesn't want to be at the top. He just wants a comfortable enough life and the possibility to reach his very specific and not at all mainstream goals. A legend. (In mdzs, where he becomes chief cultivator, he's still a Slytherin, albeit a slightly less interesting one.)

Wen Qing

Now, she is another hard one. Another fiercely loyal person (although that's a common trait in mdzs/cql), she also had to show incredible resourcefulness to survive and still stick to her principles throughout her life. But to mention that she invented and su subsequently performed the first core transfer in history. (In the book, it is specifically mentioned that the essay on this subject was written by her). In short, this woman is s genius in her field and forward thinking and incentive. All of those are textbook Ravenclaw traits. So, with her we have ...

RAVENCLAW!

Wen Ning

Puh, he is hard. I know, with his timid behaviour and gentle nature, hufflepuff comes to mind BUT ... he strikes me as a neville. As in, his bravery lies in the fact that his own insecurities hinder him constantly and yet he overcomes them every day in a hundred small ways. He is brave precisely because he is afraid of so many things. And, like Neville, when his sense if right and wrong demands it, he takes a stand. His rescue of wwx and jc extremely dangerous circumstances and the core reveal come to mind. So, even though he probably argues with the hat to place him in hufflepuff, I'll place him in ...

I know, she's a much more minor character than the others but I love her and this is my post, so she's in it. Do i have to say it? I hate to be the "Gryffindors ftw!!!"-one (as a proud snake), but yeah, Nie Mingjue was goddamn right when he said that she's got more backbone than half the cultivation world combined. My queen snapped and removed herself from the narrative and I love her for it!

Now, maybe the hufflepuff does run in his family because I do think he belongs there, too. His defining characteristics are shown to be kindness, fairness and filial piety, even though he also has a mischievous streak and does not shy away from confrontation when he thinks his warranted (politely defending "Mo Xuanyu" in front of the Mo clan comes to mind). So yeah

His brash and outgoing nature would make him a good gryffindor fit, certainly. However, the trait I associate with him the most is his nonconformity and that in a sect where that is highly unusual. He might not be as much of a social butterfly as Luba, but he still reminds me more of the kind of eccentricity associated with ...

Jin Ling

Now he's hard. Maybe because he postures a lot though that's something that's true for a lot of these characters. He tries to imitate his uncle but has non of the trauma to back it up, though he is an orphan and,in his position, probably pretty lonely which leads to the kind of breakdown we see him having over his confrontation with the person who killed his parents and he can't even really blame and so he just... crumbles. And non of that really helps me in my search for a house for him. I don't really see him as a Slytherin because while he loves to posture and play his privileges, he mostly crumbles under pressure and I don't think there's conviction behind it. He's certainly not sly either. Rabenclaw? Nah. I see neither outstanding amounts of eccentricity or wisdom. Gryffindor? Maybe. He's certainly impulsive. And he displayed bravery both in Yi City and even more so in the Guanyin temple where he had to face the fact that one of his uncles, the men who raised him, would kill him to achieve his goals. Still, what left the biggest impression on me was how, after his own world had just completely changed, he send his dog away because wwx would fear him. And how he then tried to get his uncle to talk to wwx. So I'd tentatively go with

HUFFLEPUFF!

Ouyang Zizhen

Another hard one because we don't know him very well in canon. But what we do know is that he is very emotional (passionate one might say) and has no qualms going against his father in a fit of teenage rebellion. I love him for it but that's not that much to go on. Both of these point to gryffindor however, so that's where he goes. :D

♡ tetsurou kuroo & kenma kozume - headcanons ♡

❝ ♡ disclaimer! these hcs are not necessarily romantic! i actually enjoy kenma and kuroo’s friendship and while some of them may be a little more intimate, you can decide to read them thinking about them as a couple. they are all setted before the time-skip, and i made it totally spoiler free. hope you enjoy it, they are one of my comfort duo and couple - so i’ll probably post my hc of them as boyfriends - and i love writing about them. also, english is not my first language, thank you for your patience. ♡

￫ kenma is the biggest fan of kuroo's clothes. he actually has a whole drawer of sweaters or shorts he "borrowed" from him.

￫ ... and kuroo is obviously the biggest fan of kenma wearing his clothes. he will never admit it to him but sometimes when he goes shopping he actually thinks about how kenma would look wearing what he's buying.

￫ they have so many little routines. like, i know it's canon that they walk to and from school everyday, but i think there's much more to that. so, here's a sub-thread!

￫ kenma is always up first because he spends his last night hours playing videogames, but he won't start getting ready for school until he receives a text from kuroo, which is usually a photo of him washing his teeth or their volleyball bags to remind him of practice.

￫ yes, "their bags". since kenma tends to lose his sense of perception when he is mentally or physically fired up, kuroo always makes sure that he doesn't forget his bag before and after practice.

￫ they have to take the same train everyday or they'll both start getting nervous. it's not because they'll be late or anything, but just like cats they are creatures of habit, so they have to take the same train on the same hour, everyday.

￫ on that note, they are always early, but only near the place they have to be. they actually arrive late to their appointments with other people, if they didn't travel together, because they'll just start talking by themselves and sometimes exploring parts of the city.

￫ they often get mistaken for a couple by people. they may or may be not, but nekoma's first years actually asked fukunaga and yamamoto if their setter was dating their captain.

￫ and yamamoto makes sure to always remind kenma of this, until kuroo actually loses it and scares him.

￫ i know everybody thinks that, but when i say that kuroo is like the kozume's other son, i mean it.

￫ since when kuroo was little he used to stay at their house, they made sure to make him feel the most comfortable possible in there.

￫ kenma's parent are used to kuroo being there so they don't even ask him anymore if he's going to stay for dinner, they just cook or order food for four people.

￫ they also apprecciate and laugh when kenma tries to go back playing videogames instead of eating meals and he basically blocks him so that he can't escape.

￫ kuroo never had a mom, and kenma's mother knows that, so she always made sure kuroo felt loved by her and complimented him when he made something.

￫ and on that note, kuroo sometimes called her "mom" on accident. he and kenma were 10 and 9, but kenma got so jealous of his mom that he ignored him for the whole afternoon, refusing to play volleyball for that day.

￫ but i also like to think that kuroo's family met and loves kenma just as much as the kozume's, and i feel kuroo's grandparents are worried about the blonde all the time.

￫ it's canon that kenma has average grades and that it's like that because kuroo helps him studying. they spend afternoons at kenma's house with kenma always distracting himself from his books and notes and kuroo trying to make their sessions a little lighter by creating jokes and stories about the subjects. kenma doesn't really like the jokes, but he loves the stories kuroo writes just for him.

￫ kenma probably stays in class most of the time, and when kuroo come to his class to talk to him, all of kenma's classmates are stunned. how can that quiet boy be friends with the volleyball club's captain...?

￫ also, since kenma had a lot of problems dealing with third years during his first year, once discovering that he was going to be captain, kuroo began being more confident with them and defended kenma more than before,

￫ but i know that he always made sure the second and first years reminded the boy of his values.

￫ ... and when he was in his first year, kuroo talked a lot about kenma to kai and yaku, to the point they were really curious to see him and were very pleased to finally meet him.

￫ they already knew what his boundaries and weaknesses were because of kuroo and respected him since his arrive, so kenma actually liked them a lot and never felt the need to bicker them because of how much grateful he was.

￫ same goes with bokuto. he and kuroo met in their first year at the usual summer camp organized by tokyo's schools, and in his second year, he was very excited to meet him.

￫ since bokuto is... bokuto, kenma found him a little to energetic for him, but he also liked to observe him playing - until he tried to ask him to set for him for what was supposed to be twenty minutes, but turned in almost two hours.

￫ kuroo has lots of photos of kenma in his phone, and him being him caused kenma to have a pic of them as his phone wallpaper.

￫ he says he is too lazy to change it, but he actually like it a lot.

￫ in one panel of the manga, when hinata and kenma are texting, kenma is shown to have many more texts than hinata, despite him not talking that much to people. and who's the one who always tries to make kenma talk and is literally all the time worried about him?

￫ even if he doesn't show it in the most common way - from others’ point of view -, kenma cares about kuroo just how much kuroo cares about him.

￫ kenma has always been scared of what people thought about him, but kuroo knows that side of him that he has never showed anyone. their teammates knows that there's nobody as intuitive as he is, but kuroo also knows about what can make him weak and how to handle his emotion.

￫ even tho, let's be honest, kuroo is way more a crier than kenma is.

￫ when they have movie nights, kenma sometimes picks rom-coms or dramas just to make him cry.

￫ but he also lets him express his feelings as much as he can, because he admires that side of kuroo, and wishes he never repress emotions like he tends to do.

￫ before important matches, kenma also tends to bicker with lev or yamamoto just for kuroo's entertaining, because he doesn't want him to be too nervous.

￫ kuroo thought of a motto to say before matches in his second year.

￫ sometimes the first and second years went to the school's gym on sundays to practice on their own, and kenma being their setter made him notice how fast he could adapt to every member, even without talking to them at all.

￫ he felt like kenma made silent connections with everyone of them, and it was because of his intelligence and observation skills.

￫ but with kenma not being that athletic, he knew the other members needed to compensate.

￫ when they were little, kenma always proposed to kuroo new videogames, and he was more than happy to play them, even though he always preferred playing volleyball.

￫ kenma started to notice how kuroo began to lose interest in his games, and at one point he asked his parents if he could buy certain games just because he thought kuroo would like them more. he even made them buy a volleyball game, and kuroo actually enjoyed the thought, but proposed to kenma to play in real life.

￫ and finally, at his graduation, kuroo was the student with the highest grades, and being the volleyclub-who-went-to-the-national's captain he had to make a speech in front of the whole school.

￫ trying to be funny, he made some science jokes, but nobody except for kai laughed.

￫ also, he was so nervous he misspelled so many words, and his dad recorded the whole ceremony. at home, he made tetsurou, kenma, and their respective families watch that and kenma laughed so hard he thought he was gonna suffocate.

magic headcanons in the sanctuary ‘verse

Or, I have come to a point in my fic where I needed to stop and write down the rules I’ve found myself establishing for How Magic Works.

Disclaimer: This is not an exhaustive list, as I assume Loki has magic and abilities that have not yet been explored in canon; therefore, some of these headcanons may be subject to change. They also may be subject to change depending on if I change my mind, cause sometimes it be like that.

Note: “Canon” refers to MCU canon. I understand that Loki may have more abilities in the comics but that incarnation of Loki isn’t pertinent to my fic portrayal.

1. Canon Abilities

superhuman strength, durability, speed, stamina

cold immunity

regenerative healing factor, longevity of life

master sorcerer: illusion manipulation, presence concealment, shapeshifting, mental manipulation, conjuration, telekinesis

other skills: genius level intellect, master tactician, expert combatant, mastery of spear and knife, expert piloting and marksmanship skills. (Source.)

2. Canon Abilities not included in Wiki

Teleportation. - Loki knows how to get from one realm to another without using the Bifrost. In TDW, he pilots through a portal; in Thor 1, however, he’s shown to simply appear and disappear from places without a ship or any other devices. I interpret this as his being able to go back and forth between places with teleportation magic, similar to Dr. Strange’s portals (Loki’s portals are visible only to Loki).

Invisibility. - When Loki visits Thor in Thor 1, he’s invisible to everyone except Thor. I interpret this as Loki having the ability to cloak himself when needed, hiding himself either entirely or just from certain people. - It’s also canon that Loki knows how to cloak himself from Heimdall’s gaze.

Ability to handle infinity stones. - Phyiscally, Loki can pick up the tesseract with his bare hands, store it in his pocket dimension, and use it as a teleportation device. - It’s canonically stated in Avengers 1 that Loki has been taught the power of the tesseract. Loki also sent the reality stone away at the end of TDW, implying that not only does he have knowledge of/understand what the stones are and how they work, he also knows they are too dangerous not to be separated at all times.

3. Magic and Asgard: My Interpretations of Canon (Plus Shit I Just Made Up)

Asgardians as a race are all capable of magic. - Thor 1 establishes that magic and science are one and the same (Thor, Thor 1). - Additionally, “ Asgard is millennia beyond you in our pursuit of science and knowledge” (Lady Sif, Agents of Shield). - Therefore, I interpret that scientific magic is something all Asgardians have access to and know how to use.

There are two types of magic: scientific magic and gifted magic. - Scientific magic is more technological, used for things like engineering, medicine, transportation, etc. This level of scientific development is such the norm in Asgardian society that most don’t even consider it magic at all. One doesn’t need any magical talent to use magical technology. - Gifted magic, on the other hand, is more like an internal energy; Asgardians are born with it (so are Jotuns; it’s like how both species are very long-lived) and are capable of developing it (though many don’t). - Those who choose to harness and practice the art of magic are the sorcerers (or seiðmaðrs, or witches, if you like). They are mostly women and their brand of magic includes spellcraft, illusions and trickery, transmutation, telekinesis, etc. Gifted magic is the type of magic that is generally scorned by the warriors when practiced by men. - Loki explains it like this: “Magic was an inherent ability in Asgardians, interwoven so closely with their scientific developments that sometimes it was hard to distinguish the two. That said, it took hard work and great skill to become a seiðmaðr. Practiced by many, but mastered by few, his mother used to tell him. It was like dancing; anyone could move to the rhythm of a song, but dedication, practice, and a natural, ingrained talent were necessary to make it an art” (Sea, Ch. 9). - This is why it’s possible for Dagny to have the potential to learn and become a sorcerer herself. In short, it’s not like the Force, where only certain people are capable of it. It’s more varied than that.

Some Asgardians have very unique magic that cannot be learned. - Some sorcerers are also “seers,” who have the ability to see into the future. Frigga has this ability, and Thor has the potential for this ability (as shown via his dreams of Ragnarok and the infinity stones; I think he thinks those prophecies were tied to Ragnarok, and doesn’t realize it’s a power he specifically can develop). - Loki, notably, does not have this ability and makes it a point to say so, which is the basis of my interpretation that this particular skill is innate in some and not others, and can’t be learned. - Heimdall, of course, has the ability to see all of the universe at all times. This is his gift from the norns, and cannot be learned. - Thor’s lightning powers and ability to control the storms were also a gift from the norns (not to Thor specifically, but to the firstborn son of Odin). It can’t be learned or transferred; it exists solely in Thor. - Finally, there is the Odinforce, which is strictly a tool of the kings of Asgard. When it gets low, it must be replenished by the Odinsleep. (Source.) My interpretation is that the Odinforce is the most powerful magic that exists, second only to the power of the norns. - In later chapters of Sea, I plan to explore how Thor now also has access to the Odinforce, but he doesn’t realize it yet.

4. Loki’s Seiðr

Loki’s magic is tangible energy. - The more developed the sorcerer, the more tangible that internal energy becomes. I imagine Loki’s seiðr, at this point, to be so developed that it’s like a chemical. It rests in his core and flows through his veins; it’s an intrinsic, physical part of him, like a limb or an organ or blood. - Like any energy source, the magic can become depleted. If Loki overexerts himself (usually by pushing himself to his limits or attempting a spell that requires a lot of magic), not only does his magic become inaccessible while it “recharges,” but because his magic is physically a part of him, being without it makes him terribly ill. He experiences symptoms such as nausea, exhaustion, headaches, etc. His mother referred to this condition as being “spell sick.” - When he is spell sick, he can’t do advanced magic at all. He may be able to muster up enough energy for rudimentary spells, at the risk of making himself even sicker. - Being spell sick does not affect his natural enhanced abilities, such as his strength or durability.

Loki’s magic responds to extreme emotions. - In TDW, after finding out about Frigga’s death, Loki clenches his fists and everything in his cell goes telekinetically flying. I interpret this as his telekinesis going haywire as a result of his extreme distress. - Likewise, when his emotions are beyond his control, the magic lashes out because Loki is no longer capable of controlling that energy. This is why lights and machinery shattered when he had a panic attack, and why little mage lights appeared everywhere when he was having sex with Brunnhilde (bc it was a particularly emotional encounter). - Extreme emotion can also fuel Loki’s magic. Spells and abilities can be performed at a more powerful level when Loki channels things like rage, grief, elation, etc into it.

Some magic is visible to everyone; some is only visible to Loki. - Some magic, of course, can be seen as it’s being performed. Mage lights, electricity, fire and ice magic, and so on - these are all things that everyone can see. - Other magic is, again, energy - it flows, it ebbs, it gets tangled up, it hovers in the air. This type of magic exists on a level that can’t be seen except by those who know where it is. Loki, of course, knows where it is. He can also “pull” magic out of a bespelled object. In Sea, Dr. Strange enchanted a bracelet to bind Loki’s magic; Loki was able to visibly pull the magic from the bracelet in order to access it and set about dismantling it. He likened it to unraveling a ball of yarn.

Miscellaneous. - Some magic can be performed without a thought, like telekinesis or conjuring; other magic requires incantations and/or physical objects to work. The more advanced the spell, the more complicated the process. - Loki has a veritable treasure trove of magical components, such as potions, charmed objects, spellbooks, and so on. He has several pocket dimensions and has been squirreling things away for years. A lot of his resources were lost on Asgard, but Loki has plenty more than anyone realizes hidden away.

alrighty! so it’s that time of the day where i start analyzing characters for no fucking reason ( i do have one, as yusuke is my baby ).

DISCLAIMER: this comes from a personal and professional point of view. your headcanons on yusuke are as valid as mine but please take into consideration that this analysis will also show how my portrayal on yusuke is going to be. also please note that this is going to be a long post.

yusuke has been confined almost all of his life. he was a victim of abuse and plagiarism since a very young age, not to mention that he was also lied to regarding his mother’s death. all of these factors can impact HEAVILY on a person’s mind, especially when the trauma was developed during CHILDHOOD, many consequences will happen in adolescence and adulthood. in this analysis i will be explaining the presence of ASPERGER’S SYNDROME on yusuke’s character.

let’s start with asperger’s syndrome. what is it? usually a syndrome that has been OVERLY and MISTAKENLY diagnosed. as well it has been combined with the autistic spectrum though there have been many controversies as many professionals ( including myself ) believe that this should be a separate syndrome due the differences in both conditions.

now, first of all let’s start clearing stereotypes. asperger is a condition that can easily pass unnoticed in a person’s daily life. of course, patients with this condition do STRUGGLE with a lot of situation, but contrary to the popular belief, they can easily merged in society. Therefore, having asperger does represent a different way of thinking but that doesn’t mean that it can be stated as “defective”. in fact, people with asperger are considered extremely intelligent and the different perspective that this cognition causes on them has helped them in their professional lives. though, it’s my responsibility to explain that asperger syndrome mostly affects social interactions on the patient, as they have pervasive and absorbing interests in special topics. and here is where yusuke enters.

we can notice his passionate ( and kinda unhealthy ) obsession with art. art is mostly what yusuke knew from the very first moment he learnt to speak. his life always surrounded around art so it’s easy to say that it is all he knows. being confined in that old shed with shitty madarame who only ( secretly ) cared for money and not for art was something that yusuke grew up admiring. madarame was his paternal figure, was his ROLEMODEL and because of this he denied every red flag that appeared on madarame’s behavior. though, don’t get me wrong, asperger syndrome is genetic but the environment surrounding the patient can also affect to the circumstances and symptoms.

some characteristics of asperger are the increased ability to focus on details, capacity to persevere in specific interests without caring about other people’s opinions. the ability to be independent and work independently, recognition of details and patters that might be missed by other people, intensity regarding specific subjects or people and of course, an original way of thinking. if you notice, all these traits are visible on yusuke’s character which solidifies the headcanon.

now, if we talk about symptoms that might affect his daily live we have the lack of interest in socializing. it’s something that yusuke had stated many times ( especially in the mementos skits ) that nobody really approaches him, but he says it normally not in a sad tone, not disappointed. he just doesn’t care, as his train of thought go directly to “this person doesn’t want anything to do with me, and that’s okay because i don’t really care”.

gazing too intently is another symptom/behavior we notice a lot on yusuke. he stares at people, i mean like hell his hobby is people-watching on shibuya and this of course, might be considered WEIRD in a social context, but yusuke doesn’t really understand that this might make the other person feel uncomfortable, which goes to another behavior that is the inability to infer the thoughts or feelings of others. most of the times he is impulsive and would INVADE your personal space as he only takes into consideration his own interests without realizing that could be uncomfortable for others. his facial expressions are also important on this discussion as people with asperger tend to use exaggerated facial expressions or even having a lack of changing the expressions, something that happens with yusuke during his meltdowns over art or well, he is usually deadpan there is no in between.

we also have the perception, yusuke is a perceptive person and like i mentioned before, people with asperger are able to notice some details some of us can’t, but as this syndrome affects directly your social skills it’s difficult to him to understand the use of some gestures or lingo, being unable to understand some conversations, not to mention that being confined also prevented him from learning things and words that someone his age should. then, the social skills get heavily affected when it comes about interpersonal boundaries, yusuke doesn’t respect these because he is not aware they exist. he just doesn’t get it and he thinks it’s normal to be over someone, so he needs to be told DIRECTLY for him to understand and even after that, it will take him a while to do it.

now, this is one of my favorites because it was a newfound canon fact of yusuke that i gathered from the mementos skills. he mentions how he has a tv at his dorm, and that he doesn’t mind commercials but they hurt his eyes after a while. you might find this weird, like why would it hurt his eyes? people with asperger tend to be unusually sensitive to noises, touches, tastes, odors or visual stimuli. and this explains why it hurts his eyes.

the motor patterns also get affected, and on yusuke we can see that he usually frames everything or simply puts his hand over his chin. something normal but that it is affected by the same syndrome. the interests also become repetitive and intense, causing an obsession over certain topics. in yusuke’s case it’s not necessary to say that it’s art. he is obsessed with it, it’s everything he knows, art is basically his life and he does not care if it’s of someone’s interest or not. he is going to ALWAYS ramble about art and is going to relate EVERYTHING to art as long as he can and it’s hard to redirect his attention unless you talk to him about something that is equally interested to him.

i mentioned before that asperger is not the same as autistic behavior. this is mostly coming in the language part of both conditions. usually people under the spectrum have difficulties when it comes about language and vocabulary. asperger usually get a normal development with some things that differ:

focus on a defined area of interest, switching topics for no reason to make sure their interests are being discussed.

change in the tone of voice, like speaking too loudly or dramatically.

language could be interpreted LITERALLY and this leads to difficulties with the understanding of irony and sarcasm.

this is common on yusuke, as most of the time he doesn’t understand jokes and he always tries to drive the conversation towards his own interests. his voice might change to a dramatic tone sometimes and legit, everything is interpreted literally by him. despite of this we can see that yusuke is sometimes sassy and sarcastic ( as a canon fact in severe conversations ) but this is a behavior that is usually enabled by a second party. however, despite of this he is able to merge in a group of friends, he doesn’t really care about what others have to say unless they remark that he is eccentric ( which most of the times makes him mad ).

in summary, atlus actually made a great job introducing these characteristics to yusuke ( even though i don’t believe it was intentional ). however, this is something that i want you to take into consideration when we write:

YUSUKE IS NOT DIAGNOSED YET.

he is not aware of this, and i would really appreciate it if your muse actually encourages him to check it. considering his situation with madarame i doubt he ever cared about yusuke’s conditions. however, canonly we can see the interest yusuke gets on maruki takuto and that it’s an open door for me to write him in a situation that allows him to learn about himself.

SAKURA FUTABA

alright, lads. those who know me or followed me on my previous blog know that i LOVE to do this. i need to clarify that i study psychology, so these analysis is coming from a professional point of view ( which i do mostly to reinforce my essays because like, teachers love to make us analyse movies and characters lol ) and solidify my characters as my passion is giving a feeling to them of ACTUAL human beings.

now, i have seen many headcanons of futaba being autistic but, yet again, from a psychological perspective i don’t see it, and i’m gonna explain why. ( however if you headcanon her as autistic is completely valid. this is a personal analysis and perspective ).

DISCLAIMER: THIS IS GONNA BE A LONG POST. I’LL TRY TO MAKE IT AS SHORT AS POSSIBLE BUT I KNOW BEFOREHAND IT IS FOR SURE GONNA BE LONG.

breaking down the character i can see clear signals of depression, anxiety disorder, agoraphobia, hikikomori syndrome and selective mutism; this last one is commonly mistaken with the autistic spectrum because the common knowledge is associating the non-verbal behavior with the autistic spectrum or cases of schizophrenia, but in fact, this condition is not only applicable to those disorders. in real life, some people have been diagnosed with autism when in fact they suffer selective mutism, so it’s better to actually understand the root of the disorder before jumping to conclusions and giving an actual diagnosis.

let’s start with a short definition of each condition:

MAJOR DEPRESSIVE DISORDER: this condition affects negatively on the way a patient feels, thinks or acts. it causes severe feelings of sadness and in the majority of the cases loss of interest in activities that were formerly enjoyed. this also has an effect on the patient’s behavior and can also lead to physical problems.

( SOCIAL ) ANXIETY DISORDER: a pretty common condition ( there are studies that say that nearly 30% of the adult population suffer from this disorder ). this is actually a normal reaction of the brain when it senses excessive fear or stress, it alerts our brain of possible danger and sometimes it can escalate and turn into panic attacks.

AGORAPHOBIA: derives from the anxiety disorder. it is the fear of open, big spaces that can handle large crowds. usually the patient’s affected with this phobia feel fear mostly because they anticipate situations like using public transportation, standing in line, etc. it causes an immense fear that leads to panic attacks because they feel trapped, helpless or embarrassed. in some cases, this phobia starts because of previous panic attacks, so the patient will try to avoid those places and if something triggers that feeling, the phobia is going to act up.

HIKIKOMORI SYNDROME: this is a japanese culture-bound syndrome. it affects mostly young people in japan. they live isolated from the world, most of them locked down on their parent’s house ( some of the cases might communicate ONLY with their relatives. in the most severe cases they won’t speak to anyone at all ). this lock down can last days, months or years and it is heavily influenced by the internet and technology, as the it is their only escape.

SELECTIVE MUTISM: also derives from anxiety disorder. the patient is unable to speak in CERTAIN social situations. it usually starts on childhood but it also affects adults. contrary to its name the person does not refuse to speak, they don’t have a choice as they are truly UNABLE to speak. certain people triggers panic on them and this causes the talking to be impossible, as it is an anxiety disorder, the person will anticipate situation as well that cause distress. however, despite of this trigger the people that suffer from this condition is able to speak freely to close family circles and friends as they don’t really trigger a freeze response on them. mostly this fear comes from the expectation the other person might have on them, and this provokes the anxiety causing a great difficulty responding or initiating verbal communication.

moving to her personality and background, from the very first moment we notice the anxiety coming from her, she is only able to communicate behind a screen and with an alias as she does not really completely trusts the phantom thieves. why do i think she has selective mutism instead of being under the autistic spectrum? easy, when you start the game you can notice sojiro constantly getting calls ( and we realize later on they were from futaba ). meaning that she is able to bond properly with him, sojiro even explains later on the game that she didn’t eat nor talk for a long time and little by little he was regaining her trust to let her know that she wasn’t alone. still, you can notice sojiro’s guilt as he is not able to take her out of the house and he is happy that at least she is eating but still you can see the traces of the depression and anxiety on her personality.

futaba explains her desire to die, a common thought that derives from depression as the people that suffer this condition usually see life as meaningless. she doesn’t want to be seen either, so she covers her face and any trace that could easily identify her because yet again, she needs trust to speak normally to another person, besides she has this constant fear of being judged which shows her anxiety.

also a very important point is that people with this affections ( anxiety and selective mutism ) is that they might come off as RUDE or BLUNT ( something we notice on futaba ), because they are well, socially inept. however, as soon as she starts spending more time with the thieves she starts acting more relaxed and it’s when she starts showing her cheerful, childish side. i truly believe that these conditions started from her childhood, because as it is stated on her story line, she grew up being a lonely child. kids would just ignore her because she was considered a genius, her mother was never home and she started believing that her mother cared more about her research than being with her, this plus the lack of friendships and her mother’s dead only developed a severe anxiety disorder that later on was going to evolve in the conditions i explained previously.

the thieves indeed help her to slowly start her process of overcoming her fears, and it shows that initially she didn’t really got along well with all of them, especially makoto because makoto has a more mature vibe than the others and this would only intimidate her and made it hard to actually catch her attention because most of the subjects makoto would bring were considered boring for futaba. remember that social anxiety causes that, you are not going to bond with everyone and only trust can lead to a relationship of reciprocate interest.

overall, we can see how throughout the game she starts doing better. she creates a list with joker that allows her to conquer her own fears and well, after all everything is a process that takes years. she still relies a lot on the internet, but now she has real interaction and friends, but still when joker is about to leave she thinks about the possibility of them no talking to her anymore because akira is actually the glue in the group. of course thankfully it didn’t go that way, and they remained closed even after their leader left ( it’s canon on P5D don’t touch me ). akira is such an important figure for her as well, he has a lot to do with her improvement and i sense ADMIRATION coming from her, because akira is everything she would never dare to be. however the best chemistry she has among her friends are ryuji and yusuke, as they are easygoing, eccentric people and it’s easier to pick up trust on their personalities, as well as morgana as she shows a deep love for cats. ann, makoto and haru are the completely opposite of what futaba is yet the friendship still work because they take up on the big sis role for her. makoto is extremely mature so she actually helps her to find her boundaries, ann might have caused an issue on her self-esteem at some point but she also is someone she admires because futaba realized that she is not only looks, instead, she is an actual warrior who deals with a lot of things, and haru is the fluff ball that actually spoils her. all the different personalities among the group helps futaba towards her rehabilitation ( i’m sorry, i had to LMAO ).

an important aspect is sojiro, HE DOESN’T PRESSURE HER INTO ANYTHING, he knows and understand what she is going through and he let her be because he is aware that HE CANNOT CHANGE HER. change and getting better is a personal decision, and of course a person needs support but you can’t actually do it for them. honestly, sojiro is a GREAT paternal figure and he deserves all the love he gets because he is so caring and understanding that he contributes to her growing. also the balance in the group of friends is really important for a person who suffers from severe anxiety disorders because it allows them to interact and explore things that are out of their comfort zone, and this is the case with the thieves. they are so different yet so similar that it is easy for her to understand how despite having a similar background it affects everyone differently, leading her to open up her mind a little and allowing her to understand that the change lies within her.

in summary, we can notice a big change on futaba, she is more comfortable outside and with people and she eventually will be over her traumas. remember that she is still growing up and she has a lot to go through, there will be good and bad times, probably future traumas that might affect her anxiety but that’s what i love about her character, it’s not about “getting cured of the conditions” is learning to live with them because they are apart of you. and this is what the character development on my futaba portrayal will go, it will be her accepting her anxiety and realizing that anxiety doesn’t control her but instead finding balance.

* / BPD ( borderline personality damon )

lil talk about damon’s behaviour, emotional patterns and mental health! i’m categorising this as a headcanon for simplicity’s sake but this is all based on canon material, whether unintentional or not i do genuinely think he has it in canon and will sort of be elaborating on why that’s clear to me. as a disclaimer none of this is meant to excuse any of his behaviour and hopefully it won’t come off that way either, but bpd and its associated stigma is a personal topic to me, so please go in with sympathy and an open mind. under the cut bc this could get lengthy!

so to start off with i’ll just briefly explain borderline personality disorder (BPD) for people unfamiliar with it— it’s a mood disorder that has many associated symptoms with various mental illnesses like depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder, as well as substance issues, eating disorders and other personality disorders eg. antisocial or narcissistic personality disorder. it’s classed by four groups of symptoms:

emotional instability

disturbed patterns of thinking or perception

impulsive behaviour

intense but unstable relationships with others

( obviously this definition is too broad for any specific diagnosis, since everyone is different, and can’t be used alone to diagnose someone without ruling out other disorders and subjective opinion of a professional who knows enough about your behaviours to make an assessment, so from here on out i’m going to be drawing on my own experiences, and hopefully i’ll be able to articulate it in a way that makes sense, but please let me know if it doesn’t. )

the first and most glaringly obvious identifiers of this where damon is concerned in my opinion is a), his tendency to spiral very suddenly and abruptly after even minor triggers, such as failure, rejection or even just feeling insulted by someone he cares about, and b) his frequent impulsive behaviour, and what might be termed a lack of self-control in following those impulses - the first examples that come to mind would be his leaving for a road trip with katherine despite hating her, or killing jeremy because he was the first person he saw after feeling rejected by elena - and as he later admitted honestly, not knowing that it wouldn’t be permanent.

so starting with a), his irrational spiralling — i’ll preface this by saying that in my own experience, my initial diagnosis where my therapist suggested BPD as a possibility was immediately after i told her that i felt my emotions were just more severe than most people’s, which is why i always felt i was overreacting to things, both bad and good, alternating with feelings of extreme numbness and dissociation which would follow immediately after as a coping method. bouncing between extremes of emotion is also something we see damon do constantly; not regarding the humanity switch detail and focusing solely on his ‘humanity-on’ behaviour, we still see him go between extremely cold, numb and uncaring (albeit often this is hidden behind deflection and humor) to deeply hurt, loving, and willing to make huge sacrifices for causes or for people.

this is also a little muddled by the in-world lore of vampires having very heightened emotions. if you consider that damon already had BPD while a human, which is highly plausible given what we see of the decisions he made even then, then it follows that as a vampire those already-dysfunctional behaviours would be driven to extremes. this isn’t only obvious to the person watching; other characters comment on it constantly, e.g. almost any time katherine shows up, everyone immediately starts worrying if damon’s going to snap, having learned that the tiniest of things can send him into extreme behaviour, harmful to both himself - picking a fight with julian out in the open, described as having a death wish, and various suicide missions - and other people - e.g. attempting to kill jeremy and bonnie, despite it being abundantly clear that those two murders would make everything worse for him, and logically, make no sense, and serve no benefit to him. they were not thought-out decisions, not premeditated, and not something he would do in a sound state of mind, which is part of why they’re so painful to watch - they’re stupid, unjustified decisions, and seem irrational and disproportionate to whatever triggered him to make them. this also falls into the category of ‘lashing out’, something damon is frequently noted to do - often in the form of destroying or severing relationships, which may be done via simple purposeful negative interaction with someone, or doing more, genuine harm so that those relationships are ended regardless.

this ties in both with the impulsive behaviour aspect, but also a comment elena once made which struck a huge chord with me as an identifier of BPD - she said he felt that everyone hated him, and in an attempt to face those perceptions or correct them as someone of sound mind would do, he instead tries to come to terms with the pain of that by making himself believe that they were right - ‘proving’ both to others and to himself that they were right to hate him, via doing bad things. while this particular incident was partially due to enzo’s influence and damon seeking approval from the only person he felt he could still get it from, he still had the agency to make that decision, and this wasn’t the only time where that behavioural pattern could be observed.

the depth to which those thought processes go can sort of be seen when you consider season 8, where enzo and damon were both under the mind control of a siren, leaving only their subconscious with free will to resist. enzo’s instinct was to try and weave messages into the things that the siren had him do, knowing that bonnie would recognise them and be able to save him from doing more harm. on the other hand, damon’s instinct was to sever those relationships so completely that none of them would ever attempt to save him again, thus keeping them, in his eyes, out of harm’s way.

i don’t wanna make this so long it’s unreadable so i’ll try and end it with this last point, which is that another symptom of BPD is latching on to one particular person - whoever might feel most significant to them at the time, whether a friend or romantic interest, though often those feelings can combine and become confused when that emotional connection is made (most obvious example being elena, who damon had a relatively good and stable friendship with, that seemingly functioned fine as it was, yet progressed into romance anyway and became destructive). when that said person is found, the intensity of your emotion leads to a usually unhealthy amount of attachment on your part - often leading to possessive, manipulative or even emotionally abusive elements of relationships that more often than not become toxic. this person becomes the sole way that you feel validation/love/approval/happiness, any good emotion at all - in a way, your brain compensates for previous and more significant traumas, e.g. parental abuse/neglect, by channelling all this emotion into the nearest outlet of love and acceptance you can find. as a result even the tiniest fraction of attention or approval from that person can completely brighten your mental state for weeks, while the tiniest perception of disapproval or neglect from them - note perception, this could be something as miniscule as a misunderstanding, a tone being read wrong in a text, a genuine mistake being interpreted as a deliberate attempt to separate - can be enough to drive you to suicidal ideation.

obviously, whether it’s known to them or not, all this puts an unrealistic amount of expectation on the other person - one individual cannot possibly be responsible for the entire mental state of another, and will often - quite rightly - lead to the decision to end the relationship out of self-preservation. this is observed very frequently with damon’s close relationships; at some point, most of the people he’s been closest to have, with some degree of regret, been forced to write him off, because he puts too much strain on their own mental state. without significant effort to change on the part of the disordered person, sadly, this situation doesn’t usually have a resolution, because one’s own mental health is never the sole responsibility of others. it’s worth saying that most of these behaviours are done unintentionally and instinctively, as what seems the first logical conclusion in a brain that has been wired - physically, neurons and pathways in the brain have been grown by trauma that leads to those paths becoming the ‘right’ ones, rather than the healthy alternatives, which is usually what therapy’s end goal is - minimising the disordered pathways while reinforcing the positive ones, via practice of healthy behaviours and identifying bad thought processes so they can be stopped with the hope that those ones will take priority eventually. that being said, decisions that are motivated by and followed by, self-hatred, doesn’t excuse them from the harm they may cause other people. and it’s not fair - none of it is, because immediately what that situation seems to become is, ‘i didn’t ask to be this way, i don’t want to be harmful, but because i have been traumatised this is how i turned out, and now if i want healthy and good relationships, i have to work twice as hard against all my natural instincts just to ensure i come off as a person worth caring about’.

this is getting a little off-topic, but to say - there is a stigma about BPD, often associated with emotional abuse and manipulation, and it’s too complex a topic to sum up in one paragraph, but the gist of it is that sadly in my experience there is truth to it. i feel as though my disorder increases the likelihood of me being harmful, which means i have to work twice as hard to stop it - things that seem like common sense, basic decency, human logic that comes naturally and as first instinct to many, have to be actively strived for by people with this particular disorder. so while failing to do so may happen more for those people, and thus lead to them coming off as a worse person, there is some explanation as to why - and of course that doesn’t mean excusing that behaviour, never! but, there is a grey area between ‘excusing and enabling unhealthy behaviour’ and ‘your disability grants you no leeway whatsoever’. there is a middle ground and it’s hard to find the right place to walk it, and probably differs for everyone, but for me that’s why damon is relatable, and why i think i have more tolerance for things that he’s done.

i’ll just end this by saying that this is all one person’s experience of bpd and what i’ve observed from a few others i’ve known. i don’t speak for everyone with bpd, it’s not my call to make, mental disorder is overwhelmingly complex and hotly debated even in medical circles. but all that being said, i have recognised a lot of my own emotional experiences in damon’s and how the characters around him react to it (without the murder, obviously) and to me it is slightly more complex than ‘this is a shitty person’. thank you for reading all this if you did, it’s kind of hard to talk about, but hopefully for some this adds a little more insight into my portrayal and attachment to the character.

What do you think would have happened if Fingolfin had arrived un Hithlum and found his brother still living?

Hi and thank you for your very interesting question! I assume it is for the mun, but if it was for the muse, feel free to ask again – in any case here are the mun’s long considerations on that subject (enjoy), based on what we know of the characters, the situation, and of course on my headcanons.

[Usual disclaimer: Blahblah those assumptions are based on my reading of the texts, my interpretation and my headcanons - therefore it’s totally okay to disagree (and I’d love to have your opinion), just don’t be a dick about it blahblah]

So what do we know? What does the published Silmarillion tell us about Fingolfin at that point?

First of all, at the end of chapter 9 “The flight of the Noldor”, we learn about Fingolfin’s (legitimate) “bitterness”, but also that the main motive behind his decision to cross the Helcaraxë is precisely this bitterness against Fëanor:

“Then Fingolfin seeing that Fëanor had left him to perish in Araman or return in shame to Valinor was filled with bitterness; but he desired now as ever before to come by some way to Middle-earth and meet Fëanor again.”

Now the question would be : Why? What exactly does he have to say to Fëanor? What would he do to him? Fight a duel? Kill him in cold blood? Yell at him? Or does Fingolfin just want to prove his half-brother that he and his people would not surrender so easily? That he and his people are stronger, nobler and much more resistant than Fëanor might have thought? (when you think of the pride of the Noldorin princes that would make real sense, tbh).

And yet.

What is the first thing Fingolfin did when he set foot upon Middle-earth?

He marched on fucking Angband.

When you come to think about it, it is quite surprising, right? He crossed the Ice to meet Fëanor, but although he doesn’t know yet that Fëanor’s dead (unless he met some Sindar before he reached Mithrim – aaaaaaaaand I’ll come back to that bit later), he first decides to knock on Morgoth’s gates. I did find it surprising for quite a long time. But, now I think I’ve come to understand it; Let’s return to this dear Noldorin pride, shall we? Fingolfin and his people have just accomplished a deed unprecedented in terms of resistance, survival, strength and determination. They’re to be admired. And Fingolfin must know it. How could he not acknowledge their own courage, how could he not be proud of their accomplishment?

And how do you think he would feel about the idea of showing up in front of Fëanor crowned not only with that exceptional accomplishment in the Helcaraxë… but also with the Silmarils?

Doesn’t it sound like a good way to avenge himself and his people?

It does make sense if he actually wanted to prove Fëanor that “Loook, I’m so much worthier than you’ll ever be. You might have left us to die, but in the end we found a way, and we didn’t only survive, we also kicked Morgoth’s ass and recovered your stones. Suck my entire cock. bitch.” Well maybe he wouldn’t say it like this, but you see what I mean. Honestly, that’s just one of the ways to analyse his motives, and do you know what makes me think that’s part of his initial plan? This:

“Fingolfin unfurled his blue and silver banners and blew his horns (…) and the Elves smote upon the gates of Angband, and the challenge of their trumpets shook the towers of Thangorodrim.”

Obviously, it’s not like they try to pass quietly through the lands. Obviously they’re not betting on a surprise attack; Fingolfin and his people want to be heard, they want to be seen and acknowledged, they’re showing up as fuck and I do believe that they don’t simply want to challenge and impress Morgoth; the challenge and the impressive display is also a warning (?) for the Fëanorians. (Did it work? Spoilers: Pretty much.)

But Fingolfin eventually withdraws and goes to Mithrim because “he had heard tidings that there he should find the sons of Fëanor”…

[in “The Grey Annals“ (The War of Jewels) Fingolfin learns about Fëanor’s death when he meets his sons in Mithrim. Nevermind.]

So, according to the Silm, when he marched on Angband he already knew Fëanor was dead. maybe that’s why he didn’t instantly try to find his nephews, and walked to Angband instead. Maybe not. Maybe the information about Fëanor’s demise increased his bitterness because:

1. His half brother died. I mean yes he thinks Fëanor’s a dick but STILL.

2. Morgoth’s troops must be freaking powerful if they managed to kill Fëanor - “Must see!”

3. “Who the fuck am I going to yell at if Fëanor is dead?”

So instead of drowning into his bitterness, he attacks. Not the Fëanorians, but Melkor. Best way to express your rightful anger, right? And of course, it’s also a strategic move: he needs to see by himself and test the defence of Angband.

In any case, he was prepared to deal with the sons of Fëanor since According to the Silmarillion, he didn’t learn about Fëanor’s death the moment he met Maglor, but long before. And that point doesn’t invalidate what I said: Since “Fingolfin held the sons the accomplices of their father”, they can also suck his entire cock. And it would still have been AWESOMe to show up with the Silmarils in one hand and Morgoth’s head in the other. YES. Even if Fëanor isn’t here to see it. It’s not as fun but it’s still fun. bitch.

Aaaaand since he judged the sons “the accomplices of their father” I’m pretty sure he dealt with them more or less like he would have dealt with Fëanor. Therefore, with Fëanor alive, the situation at this point would have been pretty much the same ON FINGOLFIN’S SIDE, and probably his followers; “no love was there in the hearts of those that followed Fingolfin for the House of Fëanor”-> Fëanor, the sons, their people… I believe the presence of Fëanor in Mithrim wouldn’t have changed much of their reaction at this point.

But Fëanor’s reaction to his half-brother showing up would have probably led to a very interesting and tragic situation… which I can but try to imagine.

Obviously, when Fingolfin marched forth against Angband with his trumpets and banners, the Fëanorians must have been quite impressed, completely dumbfounded and relatively horrified. That was something they had never expected. I’m certain Fëanor wouldn’t have been less impressed. And quite honestly, I also think he would have been very much admiring. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if Fëanor would have reconsidered his judgement and came up with much more respect for Fingolfin and his people (“maybe he’s not that useless after all.”) (I’m exaggerating, yes. But you get it.)

On the other hand, the presence of Fëanor in Mithrim wouldn’t have helped alleviate the tensions between the hosts. We know that “many of Fëanor’s people indeed repented of the burning at Losgar and were filled with amazement at the valour that had brought the friends whom they had abandoned over the Ice of the North”. Would they openly repent with Fëanor around? I’m not so sure. Moreover, “they would have welcomed them [Fingolfin’s people], but they dared not, for shame”. With Fëanor alive, it is not only shame which would have hindered them. As for Fëanor himself, if he repented (which he probably did, somehow. Maybe.), shame and pride and fear of treachery and his claim of the crown would have mingled into something pretty ugly and I’m fairly certain that he wouldn’t have even accepted to withdraw to the other side of the lake. Which would have obviously increased the tensions. Because remember: it’s not only about Fëanor and Fingolfin, but also about their respective followers… which were, well, numerous. And angry. And bitter.

Now, if you ask me: would Fingolfin have killed Fëanor? Attacked his people? I think not. Because if that was his plan he would have attacked the Fëanorians no matter what. And he would have done it with Fëanor dead. But he didn’t. He gave them a chance to repent and to make things better.

But I believe that if Fëanor had been alive, the situation would have eventually escalated into an actual strife, if not war, but only after a moment, an accumulation of tensions. Little by little. Fingolfin would have done the exact same things, yes, but I doubt Fëanor would have had his sons’ reactions as they are depicted in the canon. Not only because Fëanor is Fëanor, but also because of the emotional state of the Fëanorians: in the canon, at this point, the Fëanorians are not only outnumbered, they’re also mourning. Their father is dead. Their brother, if he’s not dead, is being tortured. They’re not in a psychological position to challenge Fingolfin’s host. But with Fëanor alive (and Maedhros still with them), this very situation would have been different precisely because they would have felt stronger. More hopeful, somehow.

Now we must also keep in mind the intradiegetic bias ; Fingolfin is a revered king and most often he’s portrayed as the “good guy” in comparison to Fëanor who is the son of Finwë always associated with wrath. Therefore, the elven chroniclers would not portray Fingolfin as wrathful, if only for a question of relevant narratives rules (one character = one main personality trait -> I oversimplify the thing, but you see my point, right?). What I’m trying to say is that Fingolfin will always be portrayed as noble. We ought to see him as wise, and even when dealing with the worst (i.e. the face to face combat with Morgoth) he must not be depicted like his wrathful half-brother (check the difference of treatment between the last fight of Fëanor and that of Fingolfin and you’ll see my point). And when you have that in mind, you can question most of the elements I’ve expressed so far.

Yup. That’s what unreliable narrations do. I love them.

Actually I do believe that there might have been some use of euphemisms in the depiction of the situation in the Quenta Silmarillion as we know it, and you just have to look at some older drafts to detect some hints; In The Grey Annals, it is not a peril of “strife” between the princes, but of ”war”, a semantic difference which is relevant, if you want my opinion… In the pre-LOTR Quenta Silmarillion, not only “there was little love between those that followed Fingolfin and the house ofFëanor”, but here again “their hearts were filled with bitterness”. The same bitterness that led Fingolfin through the Helcaraxë precisely to find Fëanor…? Maybe. And you know bitterness is a double-edged motive, right?

Besides, if the main reason Fingolfin crossed the Grinding Ice was to find Fëanor, you can be sure that the feud around the lake doesn’t only rely on bitterness. There must be anger, dismay, wrath and a little wish for revenge. And honestly, if it took the rescue of Maedhros + the surrender of the crown by the Fëanorians (that is a complete humiliation) + the gift of their best horses to assuage the feud, then the latter must have been driven by something much heavier, much more dreadful than bitterness. It is not simply a political disagreement, they left them to FUCKING DIE. So thank you for the noble portrait of Fingolfin, but the guy must have felt much more revengeful than the narrator wants us to believe (and honestly, Fingolfin is probably one of the most interesting character to look at through the perspective of narrative bias).

But those are pure assumptions and I wouldn’t base my arguments on that… I just believe it is important to keep it mind.

Another element that is essential (and that will be my last point), is that this episode exists from the very first draft of the Silmarillion (see the “Earliest Silmarillion” in The Shaping of Middle-earth, in which the main difference is that Fingolfin doesn’t march on Angrand after his arrival and goes directly to meet the House of Fëanor). This early existence implies that Fëanor’s death is crucial for the unfolding of the story, and it is crucial for it to happen at this point of the timeline – and when you come to think about it, it makes sense ; if Fëanor doesn’t die, Maedhros would have hardly been taken by Morgoth, so no rescue by Fingon, which is by essence, the tool that healed the feud between the two Noldorin hosts. Without Fingon’s rescue of Maedhros, you can be pretty sure the “peril of strife between the hosts” would have ended in an actual strife, with or without Fëanor - but with Fëanor, Maedhros would haven’t been captured, sooooooo…. No rescue, no peace. QED

After all, don’t forget that “Morgoth arose from thought, and seeing the division of his foes he laughed” and the old pre-LOTR Quenta Silmarillion reminds us that “they achieved nothing” while the feud lasted, although Melkor was hesitating and thus was vulnerable… can you imagine the rest of the story if the Noldor couldn’t have put their bitterness and resentment aside to cooperate?

Basically:

Fëanor survives -> no ambush -> no capture of Maedhros -> no rescue -> no healing of the feud -> no cooperation between the Noldorin princes -> no agreement as to who would be the king -> more tensions (war?) -> victory of Morgoth through the Noldors’ own incapacity to work together…

Everyone Loves Hermione Chapter 3

Finally! The chapter with our favorite redhead and the beginning of romione bromance!

Also, I don’t know if the Wizarding World has television or Radio but here they do not. Additionally, headcanon Hermione loves rock and pop music you can’t change my mind.

Chapter Three:

Ron hurried along with his large family as they hastily made their way towards Platform 9 3/4 . Fred and George were, as usual, messing with him. Ron felt his temper flare up, but he knew his brothers would find a way to make it so their mom would reprimand him instead if he snapped so he kept quiet.

“Don’t worry Ronnikins! We’ll keep you safe for your first year!” Fred chirped.

“For a fee of course! Let’s say, be our test subject for pranks?” George followed just as cheery. Ron wanted to bite them.

“No thanks.” He mumbled. He felt Scabbers move around in his pocket, squeaking. He felt so embarrassed that he was given a hand-me-down pet while everyone else he was sure would have new animals for their first year. Not to mention, his wand was also a hand-me-down as well. Would people like him? Would he be able to make friends?

He was nervous as hell to say the least.

“Oh come on! Just let us use you for some teeny tricks! It won’t be embarrassing!” George tried to trick him.

“I said no!” Ron snapped loudly. Fred and George grinned, knowing they could get him now.

“Now now, Ronnie! That’s no way to talk to your brothers!” Fred scolded gleefully.

“We’ll be sure to tell Mum!” George warned playfully. The Weasley matriarch wasn’t paying attention—too busy conversing with her other children to hurry along. Ron’s face turned pale. Any smart Weasley knew to be afraid of their mother’s scolding.

However, before the two of them could scamper off, Ron felt someone loop their arm through his. He turned his face and was engulfed by bushy brown hair. He coughed a bit, and moved some of the voluminous hair, showing a girl with a stern glare that could easily rival his mother’s.

“Leave him alone, you bullies!” the girl snarled at his older brothers. They appeared to be shocked that someone so tiny was telling them off. Even at times their mother would not be so harsh these days due to knowing they wouldn’t listen no matter what she said. However, Fred and George composed themselves.

“Don’t worry, little mouse. We’re just having some fun.” George told her, grinning. Fred also grinned.

“He’s our brother after all.” Fred added. The girl’s eyes narrowed even farther, and Ron thought her brown eyes became molten amber with their intensity.

“Well, you’re upsetting him! So guess what? He’s my brother now. I adopted him. Good day!” the girl firmly said, dragging Ron with her as they separated from his family and hurried into the Platform, neither taking note of Fred and George’s stunned looks or Mrs. Weasley chatting with a black-haired boy. Ron just blinked in confusion. What just happened?

The girl huffed angrily, pushing some of her hair out of her face. Ron spit some of her hair out when it got caught in his mouth. She seemed to have realized what she had done and let him go, blushing in awkwardness.

“Sorry, you probably wanted to say goodbye to your mum. It’s just I hate people being bullied…” the girl told him shyly. Ron just continue to blink. This was the first time someone came to his rescue, and he didn’t know how to handle it. Not to mention, she wanted to be his sister. All his siblings often expressed annoyance at being related to him. He wasn’t used to it…

“Erm it’s okay. Are you really going to adopt me?” Ron asked in awe. She seemed nice. He always wanted a nice sibling that openly cared about him. The girl grinned at his question.

“I don’t mind! I’ve never had siblings!” Ron sighed in relief. It would be just the two of them then. He could deal with just one sister. “What do siblings do?”

“They usually annoy each other, but I say since we don’t like bullies, we should be nicer to each other.” Ron answered, giving it some serious thought. The girl beamed.

“Okay! So if we ever get into fights, we have to remember to be nicer than your other siblings are to you.” The girl agreed. It was a simple conversation, as if they weren’t speaking about something huge like adopting and disowning, but Ron and the girl didn’t think of it that way. Ron felt as if he finally had a friend.

“I’m Ron Weasley. What is your name?” Ron introduced himself, beginning to push his cart along. She fell into step with him perfectly.

“I’m Hermione Granger! I promise I’ll be the best sister ever!” Hermione hugged him tightly, and Ron squirmed.

“Not in public! We gotta be the cool siblings!” Ron protested, blushing, and Hermione released him quickly, sheepish.

“Sorry! You’re right! We’ll hug in private!” Hermione agreed. They boarded the train, immediately setting forth on finding a compartment quickly. Luckily, they found one in the back of the train, and settled down quickly. They surveyed each other curiously. “So when is your birthday?” she began.

“March 1st. I was born in 1980.” Ron answered. Hermione gave a squeal of delight, clapping her hands together.

“Mine’s September 19th! I was born in 1979! That means I’m your older sister!” Hermione was thrilled while Ron groaned in dismay.

“Don’t go babying me now, Hermione.” Ron begged. He couldn’t take more older siblings. Hermione laughed.

“Don’t worry. I won’t baby you—much.” She grinned. Ron gave another groan. Hermione patted his shoulder reassuringly. “You can baby me too, okay?”

“Alright. That’s fine I guess…” Ron let it go. Scabbers squirmed in his pocket again and Hermione’s bag gave out a hiss. Hermione paled.

“Errr you don’t happen to have a rat or toad, do you?” she asked tentatively, trying to shush the bag. Ron blinked.

“I have a hand-me-down rat, yeah. Why?” he answered. Hermione looked nervous.

“Can you put him in a cage? It’s just… err… I’ll show you in a sec.” she explained vaguely. Ron listened and put Scabbers in his cage. Hermione sighed in relief and drew the flap off her bag, revealing a huge cat. Ron did a double take.

“What the bloody hell, Hermione?” Ron gaped. Hermione frowned.

“Is this gonna be a problem?” she asked, hoping it wasn’t. Ron was her first friend for Hogwarts and he even agreed to be her brother! Ron shook his head, still eyeing the fluffy cat.

“No, we’ll just have to keep Scabbers and it away from each other.” Ron reassured her. Hermione sighed in relief.

“His name is Crookshanks. Apparently, he’s half Kneazle.” Hermione said as she lifted Crookshanks from her bag and allowed the massive cat to lay on her lap. The cat purred in pleasure.

“Apparently?” Ron parroted.

“Yeah… I didn’t really listen much to the salesperson. He was yelling at him and threatening to hit him.” Hermione explained.

“Oh so you just bought him?” Ron asked. Hermione looked embarrassed.

“Errr more like I stole him…” Hermione murmured. Ron stared for a few moments before bursting out into laughter. Hermione’s face flushed deeply. “Stop laughing! It’s not funny!”

“It is! W-what did you do? Hide him in your bag and hope the shopkeeper wouldn’t notice a small girl carrying a huge lump in her bag?” Ron was laughing hysterically, just imagining small Hermione lugging around a hissing bag. Hermione averted her eyes.

“Errr he hid in someone else’s bag actually. I had to kidnap them to get him back…” she confessed quietly, and Ron laughed harder.

“Oh man! You’re worse than Fred and George! I’m going to have my hands full with you as a sister!” Ron exclaimed in glee.

“I’m not usually one to break the rules…” Hermione argued weakly. Ron just grinned, ruffling her bushy hair. “Hey!” Hermione cried, swatting his hand away. Ron chuckled.

“Don’t worry. I’ll be your accomplice next time, okay? Siblings stick together, right?” Ron smirked. Hermione giggled.

“Yes. Yes they do. Or at least, we will.” Hermione agreed with his statement. The train began to move, and the two of them gasped in excitement. They were really going to Hogwarts, and they really were going to go together. To have someone that had their back was like a dream come true!

The soon began swapping information about their backgrounds, and their lives before each other. Hermione found out Ron was the sixth child in a family of seven children, and that usually caused him to be forgotten about or get stuck with hand-me-downs. Hermione sat right next to him and gave him a giant hug to comfort him, explaining that she was an only child, and often got bullied herself for being very bookish and not a pretty girl like some of her former classmates. Ron told her it was okay because he was her brother now and she didn’t need to be pretty to get friends—she was nice and helped him so he was sure others would see she was nice too. Soon, the conversation turned to their magical backgrounds, both curious about the other’s.

“So you are from a pureblood family?” Hermione asked. Ron nodded.

“Yeah, but don’t worry! We’re not like those other snobby purebloods. My dad loves muggles. He finds them fascinating.”

“So… that means you have never grew up with movies or music?” Hermione asked flabbergasted. Ron pondered that. He never realized that was weird.

“Well, I’ve listened to music, but in the Wizarding World it’s more instrumental. Not really a lot of genres or places to play besides pubs or big parties or weddings. And I don’t even know what movies are…” Ron answered, feeling nervous that Hermione would make fun of him.

“Just don’t tell that to my dad. He’ll make you watch Star Wars, Jaws, E.T.—I could go on really—for hours! I love those movies, but he marathons them like crazy! He’s constantly calling me young padawan!” Hermione groaned, thinking about her nerdy father constantly sneaking up on her singing the Jaws theme.

“Are movies bad?” Ron asked curious.

“Oh no! Movies are wonderful! My favorite is the first Indiana Jones movie! I love adventure movies!” Hermione told him. “They’re moving pictures with stories and characters! It’s like watching a visual book in a sense.”

“Oh! That sounds like wizarding photos! They move too!” Ron responded, glad he had a clue what movies were now.

“Really? Pictures move?” Hermione was ecstatic at the discovery. More knowledge was wonderful in her book any time.

“Yeah. Yours don’t?” Ron blinked. Hermione shook her head.

“No. They’re still pictures.” Hermione replied. Here Ron was amazed.

“Wow, that’s so weird!” he commented. He noticed Hermione digging into her bag. “Whatcha doing, Hermione?”

“I’m kinda curious.” Hermione said, bringing out a strange contraption. “This is a boombox, by the way.” She added, gesturing to the strange, small object.

“What does it do? Does this play movies?” Ron was intrigued. Hermione giggled, shaking her head.

“Oh no, that’s television! This plays music!” she brought out some shiny disks. “Since we’re siblings it’s crucial you too are obsessed with music.” Hermione told him, popping the boombox open and placing a disk in. She pressed some buttons and soon, sounds were playing out of the boombox. Ron was amazed.

“We usually just enchant instruments to play music! Is this enchanted too?” Ron felt his body vibrate gleefully in the music. “What’s this song?”

“It’s powered by batteries. My parents stocked me up with tons so we should be fine for a while.” Hermione explained. Ron didn’t know what batteries were but found he didn’t care, his foot tapping to the catchy beat. Hermione grinned. “This, my dear brother, is the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. Fair warning, my parents love him and so do I. This is his song Thriller.”

“I like it.” Ron was bobbing his head to the beat. He was already enjoying Hermione as his new sister. He had no idea who Michael Jackson was or what pop was, but his song was extremely catchy.

“There’s actually a dance to it too.” Hermione said. Ron continued bobbing his head and tapping his foot.

It wasn’t long before Ron and Hermione were singing together, bobbing their heads to the music. Ron didn’t remember the last time he had so much fun. He could definitely do this for the next seven years, and even the rest of his life. Hermione and him would definitely be the best siblings!

“Ron! What is that racket?” Of course, his family had to come ruin the fun in the form of forever-buzz-killer Percy Weasley. Hermione squeaked, embarrassed at getting caught doing something bad. Ron groaned. ”As a newly appointed prefect, I order you to turn off that infernal music at once!”

“Yessir!” Hermione yelped out, turning off her boombox quickly. Ron glared at his older brother. He wouldn’t let him bully his new sister Hermione, who had showed more consideration to him than his other siblings.

“Lay off, Percy! It’s just music.” Ron retorted. Percy gaped at his brother talking back to him before his face turned red.

“If I hear it again, I’m confiscating the object. Is that clear?” Percy tried to intimidate them, and Hermione nodded. Ron looked like he was about to protest, but Hermione shushed him. Percy left, satisfied he had the last word. Ron glared at Hermione.

“Why did you let him bully you? I could’ve handled it.” Ron asked annoyed. Hermione averted her eyes.

“I saw him with your family earlier, so I didn’t want you to get in trouble with your parents. Confiscating my boombox, fine, but I didn’t want him to get you in trouble at school and at home.” Hermione confessed. Then a flash of anger appeared in her eyes. “Also, I wanted him to leave quickly before I got expelled for kicking him in the nads.”

“Pfft” the thought of tiny Hermione kicking his tall brother in the nads was hilarious, and Ron felt his anger wash away. Knowing she did that to have his back was very comforting. He promised himself to always have her back too.

“Erm hello…” a shy voice said. The two of them turned to see a boy twiddling his fingers. He gulped when he saw he had their attention. “I’ve lost my toad Trevor. Have you guys seen him?” he asked timidly. Ron and Hermione shook their heads. The boy sighed in dismay.

“That’s probably a good thing, mate. Crookshanks likes hunting toads.” Ron told the boy. The boy blinked.

“Crookshanks?” he repeated. Hermione held up the giant fluffy cat, who hissed at the boy. The boy squeaked, flinching backwards. Hermione shushed Crookshanks and pet him to placate him.

“Sorry. He’s very selective. I’m surprised Ron and him are fine.”

“Because I’m a good brother for you.” Ron puffed his chest with pride. The boy blinked.

“Oh, you guys are siblings?” he asked. They didn’t look anything alike, but he was scared they would yell at him if he said that.

“I adopted him today.” Hermione grinned. The boy was even more confused but decided not to comment. “Anyway, you’re looking for a toad, right? We’ll help!”

“Y-You will?” the timid boy asked in disbelief. No one has ever offered to help him. Her words made him feel all warm and fuzzy. Hermione’s smile only served to farther launch him into Cloud 9.

“Yeah! C’mon Ron! Let’s go help…” Hermione trailed off, not knowing the boy’s name.

“N-Neville! I’m Neville Longbottom!” the boy introduced, his cheeks flushing red.

“Neville then. I’m Hermione and this is Ron. Let’s go then.” Hermione said. Crookshanks made to follow his human but Hermione stopped him. “No, Crookshanks! You’ll only eat Trevor. Stay here.” Crookshanks meowed in displeasure before staying in the seat. Satisfied, Hermione, Ron, and Neville left the compartment. Crookshanks watched his human go, not happy. He huffed, deciding to follow and left the compartment in search of her.

However, a familiar scent caught his nose and he made way towards it. Seeing the recognizable bag, Crookshanks shimmied into it smoothly.

Hearing his bag meow, Draco undid the flap and found a familiar whiskered face looking up at him. Crookshanks meowed innocently while Draco sighed annoyed.

“This better not be a regular thing, you cretin.” Draco said without any malice. He rose up from his seat and bid farewell to Crabbe and Goyle. “I’ll be right back. My friend lost her beast of a cat again.” A fond smile bloomed on Draco’s face at the mention of Hermione. At least now he had an excuse to seek her out. Crabbe and Goyle waved him farewell and Draco set off to go find Hermione.

“Okay, thank you.” Hermione said to a group of older students, shutting their compartment door with a sigh. She turned to her two comrades and shook her head in disappointment. “They didn’t see him either.”

“I hope he’s okay!” Neville was beginning to panic. “My Gran will kill me if I already lost him! She’s always yelling at me for forgetting things.”

“Don’t worry. He’s around here somewhere.” Hermione patted his shoulder in comfort and the boy stared at her in wonder, blushing brightly. Ron watched Neville suspiciously. He saw how nervous he got around Hermione, and he wondered what was his deal. He was staring at Hermione like she was a princess or something.

“Y-You’re right, Hermione! I just gotta have faith!” Neville was encouraged by her words, and they continued down the line, knocking on another compartment door. Hermione opened it, opening her mouth to apologize for the interruption, before recognizing the familiar boy sitting in the compartment all by himself.

“Harry?”

Harry Potter looked up at the familiar voice and he was face to face with his angel, Hermione Granger. Happiness flooded Harry, and he couldn’t help but give a shout in excitement, springing up from his seat and rushing towards her. Hermione squeaked as Harry embraced her tightly, and Harry took in her faint vanilla scent.

He couldn’t believe he was seeing his angel again! It was a dream come true! He had asked Hagrid to let him go to the zoo she volunteered at to try and find her before he left for Hogwarts, but then he found out she unexpectedly quit. The discovery crushed Harry, and he was saddened when he thought he would never see Hermione again, but fate must have been smiling at him for once because Hermione was here, with him, as she should be.

“It’s nice to see you too, Harry.” Hermione giggled, separating from him. Ron noticed Harry looked like he wanted to snatch her up again, and the redhead boy watched him warily. Like Neville, he too was weird to Ron. “Have you happened to see a toad around? Neville’s lost his.”

Here Harry finally noticed the two boys with his angel and a frown came upon his features. What was his angel doing with unfamiliar boys? He stepped closer to Hermione, scrutinizing them. Ron and Neville gave responding frowns. Neville because he felt Harry was too close to Hermione and Ron because this is the second boy who is being a weirdo.

“No. I haven’t. Sorry.” Harry shook his head, turning his attention back to Hermione. “Do you want to sit here with me, Hermione? We could catch up.” Harry gave her a boyish, shy smile. Ron and Neville noticed Harry only asked Hermione.

“I’m sorry, Harry. We really should be looking for Neville’s toad. Thank you though.” Hermione didn’t notice anything. She remained oblivious as Ron watched Neville give Harry a smirk of victory. Ron blinked. Was this the same mousy boy they were walking around with? He saw Harry narrow his emerald eyes in challenge.

“I’ll go with you, Hermione. Being in here by myself is boring anyway.” Harry said, following them out of the compartment. Hermione gave him a grateful smile.

“Oh, Harry, that’s so sweet of you!” Harry blushed at her praise. Ron continued to wonder if the two boys with him were mental while he watched Neville now frown. He stepped closer to Hermione, having the urge to back away slowly and have them run for cover.

The four of them made their way along the train before a meow sounded and Hermione blinked as a familiar blonde-haired boy held up Crookshanks to her face.

“I believe this is yours, Hermione.” Draco grinned in greeting. Hermione laughed, amused, eyeing Crookshanks. She took him into her arms and the fluff purred happily.

“Oh, you’re so naughty Crookshanks I swear!” Hermione cooed as all the boys watched her. Draco, Neville, and Harry were watching her with adoration and Ron was seriously calculating the odds of their luck encountering three mental boys. He wasn’t good at math, but he was sure the odds shouldn’t have been this great.

“Who are you?” Harry demanded the blonde-haired boy who was talking with Hermione familiarly.

“I’m Draco, Hermione’s friend. Who are you?” Draco glared back. Ron grasped Hermione’s clothes as she was none the wiser, still cooing at Crookshanks.

“I’m Harry. I’m also Hermione’s friend.” Harry retorted. Neville gave them both a glare.

“Well, I’m Hermione’s friend too!”

Ron watched the scene with caution. He tugged Hermione again, and she glanced at him curiously. He gestured for her to leave with him and she beamed, clutching his hand and they retreated away, Ron’s thoughts running wild.

‘Those guys are mental. Why were they all hung up on Hermione?’ Ron wondered. She was an awesome sister, so maybe they wanted her for a sister too? A frown came on his face. Too bad—she was his sister first! ‘No wait, that isn’t right. They were looking at her like Mum and Dad look at each other—oh no.’

Ron’s face paled as realization came to him. He groaned out loud, drawing Hermione’s attention.

“What’s wrong, Ron?” Hermione was curious. Ron turned and placed his hands on her shoulders.

‘Wasn’t boys liking her supposed to come way later?!’ Ron groaned again before speaking.

“Hermione, when we get to Hogwarts, I’m teaching you how to throw a right hook.” Ron said seriously.

“Why’s that?” Hermione blinked.

“Because if any more of our classmates are anything like those three, we’re surrounded by mental people.”

Iktotchi finger tattoos: headcanon + explanation

DISCLAIMER BEFORE I START: this just personal worldbuilding I did when developing my Iktotchi OCs. Since Lucasfilm hasn’t given us much information about them (both in canon and the EU) and there have been only like two important Iktotchi in the whole series (thanks, Saesee Tiin and Ferren Barr) I decided to sort of develop their society based on my own interpretation and the use of tattoos within the SW universe (in which they’re usually used as distinctions in several species). THIS DOESN’T IN ANY WAY BELONG TO THE OFFICIAL CANON AND IT’S JUST PERSONAL WORK.

Feel free to use this system for your own Iktotchi OCs and/or modify it or add stuff to it as you want! Just don’t claim it as yours.

I came up with Iktotchi using finger tattoos as a way to identify themselves within their society, sort of like an ID card that you could see at a quick glance.

The tattoos would be organized like this:

(This diagram applies for both hands, left and right. Only one hand was usually tattooed, though.)

The yellow section, aka the thumbs, was used to represent family. The most frequent tattoos were horizontal lines, one for each family member one would consider important. Some families with an extensive history or big importance would also get a simplified version of a crest or symbol as a status marker.

The purple section, aka the index finger, was often left blank for an individual to get whatever they wanted later in life. It was frequent for it to be decorated with symbols representing personal achievements, or simple aesthetic patterns. However, it wasn’t as obligatory as other tattoos would be.

The green section, aka the middle finger, denoted profession. Not everyone would get it tattooed, though: the symbols were reserved for specifics jobs like diplomats and politicians (a big circle and a small one inside of it), military members (a big circle and a hexagon inside of it) or scientists and researchers (a big circle and a square inside of it).

The purple section, aka the ring finger, was obviously used for marriage. When an individual first got married they got a circle and a curved line on top of it. In case of a divorce, no modification would be done to the original tattoo; instead, another line would be added on top of it in order to represent the belief in Iktotchi culture that decisions and their impact shouldn’t be forgotten easily. TL;DR: the more lines, the more marriages.

Finally, the red section, aka the little finger, was used to denote the origin of an individual within Iktotch or its colonies. A hexagon with a dot represented someone from the capital, Ankhela; a simple hexagon represented someone from another urban area. Four dots with a circle in the middle was used for countryside inhabitants and a line with a circle on the middle for people from mountainous regions. The latter two had variations depending on the specific populations. When Iktotchi started creating off-world colonies during the rise of the Empire, a new symbol was created: two dots and a line between them.

EXAMPLES

My own Iktotchi OC (Dominic)’s tattoos.

I imagine it would be customary to start getting your fingers tattooed at sixteen, but obviously, Iktotchi culture isn’t a monolith and it would depend on the place/region. The first tattoos an individual would get were the ones related to their family and origin in the thumb and pinky finger, and their collection would grow as they got older.

Since Iktotchi had significantly thicker skin than most species, the tattooing process was different than that of other tattoos since traditional needles didn’t usually work. (CONTENT WARNING: Cutting mention.) First, the shape of the design was carved deeply into the skin with a knife and the wound was disinfected. Once the bleeding had stopped, a mixture of coal and water would be poured into the cuts and left to heal for around a month or so. (This is probably subject to change.)

Displaced Iktotchi who had been brought up away from their culture (ex. the Jedi Order) didn’t usually get their fingers tattooed.

Mako & It’s Affect on the Body

Cloud, while he was never SOLDIER, was still exposed to Mako on a regular basis even up to his experimentation at the hands of Hojo once Nibelheim was razed. With just his sensitivity, and working for Medical, it started out small; headaches that would bloom into migraines, loss of appetite, nausea, even an interruption in his circadian rhythm if he was exposed to unstable levels in a SOLDIER for too long, either for procedure or transport.

The Science Department, namely Professor Hojo, knew of his sensitivity and it’s why he chose Cloud specifically to be a combat medic alongside the SOLDIERs. While Cloud was good at his job and earned his eventual role as Chief Medical Officer for ShinRa’s combat forces, there was an underlying push from the Science Department to force him into that role.

However, due to Hojo’s experimentation after the Nibelheim incident, in which Cloud was exposed to Mako for four years, there were obvious changes not too unlike SOLDIER that could be noted.

Disclaimer

Under the cut is how I believe Mako affected Cloud. It is in no means canon, just how I logic it to have happened. This headcanon is important to post Crisis Core, and how my Cloud reacts and works. Circulatory System

Prior to Mako exposure, Cloud’s circulatory system was in decent shape, given he still maintained a healthy diet and exercise regime. Body temperature was always relative cool, however, due to chronic low blood pressure - not bad just something he needed to keep an eye on.

After the four years of being exposed to it, the Mako had integrated with his blood, and has reinforced the system. His blood pressure is still low, but manageable - the vertigo is not nearly as prevalent providing he maintains a proper diet. Has little to no issue running long distances, as the oxygen delivery to his organs is better than ever. However, his body temperature is still uniquely cool, and the oddity remains that when he sleeps he has little to no body heat - unlike usual SOLDIERs - and sleeps very cool. Reason unknown, though Hojo reasons it has something to do with the boy’s blood pressure and chronic low temperatures being normal.

Digestive/Excretory System

Prior to Mako, Cloud had to maintain a healthy diet and exercise to keep trim and in shape. His metabolism didn’t quite kick into overdrive until the Mako Experiment.

After the experiment, Cloud has to actively fight to put enough food in his body to maintain himself. The Mako devours everything, absorbing what it needs and giving his body the rest. That being said, it is very rare that Cloud ever eats something that doesn’t agree with him, and there’s little worry for him to put on weight, providing the mako can pull some form of nutrient from the food ingested.

Excretory system still works the same, before and after. Elimination of waste is routine, and admittedly the Mako makes it so there is less waste to be done, since the body ends up using more of it.

The one exception is alcohol no longer affects the man. It is processed so quickly, that he rarely bothers with such a thing, and prefers to rely on water and tea for hydration.

Endocrine System

There was no noted special marks of the Cloud’s Endocrine System before the Experiment, however afterwards, there were several noted differences in Cloud. Namely in digestion, metabolism, respiration depth, tissue function, and sensory perception.

Digestion and metabolism were sped up, enabling a faster introduction of nutrients to the rest of the systems and allowing Cloud that energy faster. Respiration Depth increased, allowing for a larger window in the instance he’s running/fighting. Sensory perception increased as well, allowing for increased range of hearing certain octaves, as well as depth perception in sight.

Integumentary/Exocrine System

No noted special features before Mako, but afterwards, there was noted differences in multiple facets. Cloud’s body no longer became dehydrated at the same rate; he could go longer without worrying about it. Cloud’s Somatosensory system was also heightened, making him more susceptible for determining temperatures, but pain and pressure were not nearly as hindering, same with touch. Subject also, despite such fair skin, secretes more melanin to protect against sunburns, no matter the scenario.

The integumentary system also has a far better reaction to maintain homeostasis in extreme conditions, allowing Cloud to ignore extreme heat or cold and focus on whatever task is at hand. Mako also put his stratum germinativum in overdrive, to assist with self healing of minor injuries in a pinch.

Immune/Lymphatic System

While Cloud’s immune system was alright before the Experiment, after it, there was no worry of disease. The immune system reacts almost immediately to shut down any foreign bodies and does its best to keep Cloud healthy and free of diseases. Any disease that does affect him, runs its course in a day or two.

Lympathic system is reinforced similarly to Circulatory and Endocrine system.

Muscular System

Muscular system, post Experiment, is reinforced. While Cloud still has what would be called almost scrawny build, there is no lack of strength in his form. He is able to run them longer, without dehydrating them, as well as the supplemental help it provides for both his skeletal system, and cardiac as well.

It is part of the reason he maintains such a proper posture, and is able to keep running long past others. Granted, his recovery period is longer, if he should succeed in exhausting his energy completely.

Nervous System

At the end of the Experiment, Cloud’s nervous system was spot on. Reactionary times were doubled - already impressive from their normal state - and sensory feedback was also doubled. Over all, Nervous system is doing well post experiment, but if he isn’t careful, pairing it with a high adrenal response will exhaust him - he has the stamina for long fights, but if he has to repeatedly be outnumbered it will wear on him faster than anything else.

Renal/Urinary System

No noted difference in either system; Renal & Urinary system work rather well to keep his blood clean as can be, and allow him to be at his best.

Reproductive System

Only noted difference post experiment is the sterilization of the subject, due to high mako levels. Subject was unconscious and unable to test anything else. Refractory period is expected to shorter than normal though, given that the mako enhances all muscles.

Respiratory System

Similarly to the circulatory system, it excels at removing carbon dioxide, and other impurities, and getting oxygen where it is needed most, even in dire, smog like conditions - there is little that the Mako can’t help purify and have the man able to use.

Skeletal System

Bone density doubled, post Experiment. Cloud is heavy, and it’s heard in his gait. Despite his small stature, he has a very heavy gait, and his bone marrow is enhanced to aid in red blood cell production both for what little self healing he does have as well as supplementing the rest of his system.

BRAINWASHING & ACTIVATION WORDS

so --- the process that underlies HYDRA’s creation of the Winter Soldier. first of all, this can be described as a process of brainwashing/ mind control/ mind manipulation to the point of breaking down one’s identity and reforge it at another’s will. what we know from scientific evidence is that this process is still debatable — whether it is real or a different psychological phenomenon, what it takes to happen, consequences, etc. obviously, it is impossible to conduct research to test hypotheses in such a field — for this reason, i have researched accordingly (shoutout to @timeripe for coming along for the ride) and i have tried to build up this background as realistically and plausibly as possible.

1. ELECTROCONVULSIVE/ ELECTROSHOCK STIMULATION (ECS)

starting at 1944 --- right after Bucky’s fall and when he was captured. ECS was growing quite popular in the psychiatry field in the 1940s, after observations that, for example, it was useful to put a person in an anesthetized state. it was also already demonstrated that the electroshock provoked retrograde amnesia, in that patients could not remember the treatments and therefore had no ill feelings toward it. knowing this, as well as the effect of a general sense of confusion left after treatment, it’s small wonder that HYDRA saw the potential this could have in producing compliant soldiers for their cause. nowadays. it is also known that memory loss and confusion are more pronounced for patients who receive a steady flow of electrical impulses and who undergo bilateral electrode placement, both of which are the Winter Soldier’s case (re: the latter, it’s not actual electrodes used on him because the machines we see in the movies are quite rudimentar tbh, but it is a protocol of bilateral stimulation). we also know that some patients have persistent memory losses, especially with bilateral ECS. therefore, it is also not difficult to envision that, with frequent and non-optimized shock sessions (if not downright done on purpose to force all these side effects), in the course of 70 years of captivity, the Winter Soldier’s memory was frequently wiped clean for the most part and that some portions of it may never be entirely recovered, even if he’s to be removed from this hazardous context (i will venture deeper into his memory + amnesia in a different meta). additionally, whereas nowadays there is no solid evidence that ECS causes brain damage, there are reports that it might result in a lack of blood flow and oxygen to the heart, heart arrhythmia, and persistent asystole.

tl;dr --- this is a procedure that, when done without regard for the patient’s integrity (which, disclaimer, is NOT what happens nowadays during perfectly safe and optimized ECS therapy sessions), is terrifying af and does not immediately produce immense trauma only because the procedure in itself, ironically, causes the person to be unable to remember it. again, a perfect mechanism to be used by HYDRA standards.

2. CLASSICAL/ PAVLOVIAN CONDITIONING

this is depicted in “Captain America: Civil War”, by the use of the infamous activation words and how they promptly revert Bucky back to the Winter Soldier mindset and, basically, turn him back to HYDRA’s puppet with zero autonomy/ agency. classical conditioning is “a learning procedure in which a biologically potent stimulus (e.g. food) is paired with a previously neutral stimulus (e.g. a bell). it also refers to the learning process that results from this pairing, through which the neutral stimulus comes to elicit a response (e.g. salivation) that is usually similar to the one elicited by the potent stimulus“. so, how does this apply to the activation words?

from what we can see at the start of CA:CW, during the flashback in 1991, the biologically potent stimulus is the ECS, as discussed in topic 1, which provokes a state where, right after the session, the Winter Soldier is 1) in a state of confusion, 2) in an anesthetized state of sorts, 3) having no recollection of what just happened, and 4) with his memory in general converted to a clean slate. all of these are ideal, in turn, to induce a state of hypnosis. in this case: “hypnosis is a state of human consciousness involving focused attention and reduced peripheral awareness and an enhanced capacity to respond to suggestion. during hypnosis, a person is said to have heightened focus and concentration. the person can concentrate intensely on a specific thought or memory, while blocking out sources of distraction. hypnotized subjects are said to show an increased response to suggestions”. again, it’s not hard to see how convenient this is when you’re trying to create the perfect soldier/weapon, who’s 100% focused on your objectives and doing your bidding only. this is the default mode of functioning of the Winter Soldier, and what is achieved via the activation words.

so, the way i see it... what happens is that, after every ECS session, a hypnosis session immediately follows. during hypnosis sessions, the Winter Soldier undergoes indoctrination on the whole HYDRA is here to save the world, we fight for freedom, everyone who opposes us needs to be removed, we’re the good guys, etc --- a message we see being clearly used in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”, by Alexander Pierce, when Winter questions the man on the bridge --- he’s immediately reminded of how he himself changed the century, how he’s doing the right thing and this man doesn’t matter, yada yada. whenever this message does not work by itself, then a new ECS session is needed to restart the cycle; aka wipe him and start over.

during hypnosis sessions, that is also when the activation words are recited, again when the Winter Soldier’s mind is solely focused on them and nothing else. and this is how the conditioning, therefore, works: an initially neutral stimulus (activation words) is associated with other stimuli (shock sessions + hypnosis sessions) which is able to produce a desirable response (absolute compliance, zero resistance, zero questioning of orders, zero agency), so that, by itself, the neutral stimulus becomes able to elicit this same response.

let me add here that the state of cryostasis the Winter Soldier is kept in, whenever he’s not needed, is also essential for this process --- as, despite the popular “cold sleep” name, this isn’t true sleep at all. this does not allow for REM sleep to occur, which in turn does not allow for short-term learning to be properly converted into long-term memories. which, again in turn, explains the Winter Soldier’s amnesia and, as well, why the conditioning must be reinforced every time he’s awoken (i.e., the reason why he’s awoken, dragged out of the cryo chamber, shoved down for ECS + conditioning --- as we see depicted at the start of CA:CW).

a final thought: i personally don’t believe the activation words would ever be as powerful as to immediately and inexorably turn Bucky into a complete robot, after simply reciting them once, as we see done by Zemo. alternatively, what i headcanon is that, while the end result is the same, it requires longer and more effort to get there --- so that Bucky will try to resist the effect that the words are trying to provoke, and it will take a couple more times of reciting them (while he is somehow unable to block them out, for example by being physically constricted) for the brainwashing to be completely successful.

3. CONSEQUENCES

first and foremost, i love the general idea depicted at the end of “Black Panther” that recovery IS possible, even for someone who’s quite literally gone through hell and back. however, i don’t agree with the idea that the activation words can be entirely removed, so to speak --- for example, it is well demonstrated that operant conditioning responses can take as much as 10,000 attempts without any sort of reinforcement, before eventually becoming extinct (thank you B.F. Skinner). ofc there is always the excuse that this is fiction and we can make technology as badass as we want, but i’m not a fan of that --- so i go for a compromise as realistic as i can do.

we know that Shuri was able to “deprogram” Bucky quite substantially, but we aren’t explicitly told how --- only that it was achieved by the time of “Avengers: Infinity War”. we also have Bucky himself stating that he is now “a semi-stable 100-year-old man “ --- semi-stable obviously implying that he still has to deal with some sort of sequels, despite his huge and beautiful progress. and this is absolutely all right. persons who endure trauma and/or mental disorders do not magically revert back to a state where they are totally fine, no matter how excellent the therapy is, and i am very glad this much respect was given to this topic. back to Shuri’s strategy, i would say this was heavily based on a protocol of counterconditioning/ stimulus substitution and systematic desensitization. to make a long story short, the rationale was to break the association between activation words + Winter’s mindset, to make it so that the power of the activation words over Bucky is as reduced as possible, and to instead associate these activation words with desirable outcomes --- for example, a positive stimulus, such as affectionate human contact, that is offered at the same time the words are recited --- so that the words are gradually able to elicit a positive emotion, rather than complete submission.

from what we currently know, this sort of intervention has great success and, for example, was one of the earliest behavioral treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder. however, we also know that it is not a perfect technique (like none is) --- which, all things given, leads me to believe that the words have not lost their power entirely. so... whereas, for the most part, by the time of IW they have become obsolete as far as triggering the Winter Soldier mindset goes (provided Bucky is in a positive context), they can still provoke anxiety and they can still bring back a great deal of noxious memories associated with those days. so, for example, reciting these words at this point in time will not succeed in brainwashing, but it will provoke a negative/vulnerable mindset and, under certain circumstances and in certain contexts, may provoke an actual panic attack. this also applies to other triggers/stimuli (which i will discuss in another meta) but, essentially and most significantly, to the activation words --- given their relevance re: the Winter Soldier.

to conclude: in my portrayal, the events that are post-CA:CW will bring about the start of Bucky’s recovery --- which will be progressive, extended (tbh it will likely be a lifetime process), and not entirely able to revert him back to the man he was in 1944 but that will, no doubt, make a huge difference for his mental health, integrity, and stability. depending on the timeline i’m writing him on, obviously, his progress will greatly vary --- right at the end of CA:TWS, he’s dysfunctional for the most part and greatly vulnerable, whereas, by the time of IW and beyond, he still suffers from severe PTSD symptoms but has learned how to better cope with them and how to preserve his well-being.
