            it was one of those days after school in which she felt BEAT. still getting used to getting back to school and most importantly, SOCIALIZING did take all her energy. there were times in which she still PANICKED in front of people, and with all the other thieves away she was basically ALONE in her class. the only person that was available for her was on another school, and dear lord-- it was such a great moment to be DRAMATIC about it and internally suffer about how CURSED her life was. 

            as soon as she got home, she quickly opened the door of her room and changed into her usual clothes. as well, it didn’t take her long to flop onto her bed with her face buried on her pillow. she couldn’t help but feel a little lonely and even if she was trying to fight her own ANXIETY she knew that there was still a LONG way to walk. though, these moments were usually momentary, as she got easily distracted by another stuff like video games. however, that didn’t stop her from taking out her phone and IMPULSIVELY text yusuke about her horrible day.

           two years had passed since the last time she was in japan, so many memories especially from that summer that eventually helped to CHANGE her life. she kept in contact with the friends she made back in her first year at kosei, even after before returning to her country. her messages though, were mostly exchange between hifumi and sometimes yusuke when he managed some free time to respond, as saskya was fully aware that art was his PRIORITY. however, she did make some plans with hifumi to come visit and those plans have been going for over two years until she finally was able to come during vacations. 

            staying with her, she finally had the nerve to ask for yusuke as she barely kept communication with him for reasons mentioned before, and it was when she told her that he was spending a lot of time in a small coffee shop called “leblanc”. interesting name, to be quite honest so without waiting too much time she decided to go later that day. following the directions that her friend gave her, she finally located the shop, listening to the bell ringing as soon as she opened the door and only finding a ginger girl sitting, playing with a console, or so it seemed in all honesty she wasn’t exactly tech savvy. 

           “uhm-- hello. i am looking for kitagawa yusuke, a mutual friend told me i could find him here.” she stood still, waiting for a response and examining the place. there was no people there aside from the girl and she was unsure if he worked here or something of the sort but the place seemed as if it was closed. but as she waited, she could only sense the other girl simply staring, dumbfounded, frozen at most. until futaba was actually able to speak. 

           “why are you looking for him anyway?” not realizing that her words could come a little HOSTILE, she was genuinely curious why a girl, and not to mention this beautiful and visibly foreigner was looking for a loser like yusuke. “no, he is not here.” even if she was lying, that guy basically lived in leblanc. but something was rubbing her the WRONG way, this whole situation was strange.

character analysis;

SAKURA FUTABA

alright, lads. those who know me or followed me on my previous blog know that i LOVE to do this. i need to clarify that i study psychology, so these analysis is coming from a professional point of view ( which i do mostly to reinforce my essays because like, teachers love to make us analyse movies and characters lol ) and solidify my characters as my passion is giving a feeling to them of ACTUAL human beings. 

now, i have seen many headcanons of futaba being autistic but, yet again, from a psychological perspective i don’t see it, and i’m gonna explain why. ( however if you headcanon her as autistic is completely valid. this is a personal analysis and perspective ).

DISCLAIMER: THIS IS GONNA BE A LONG POST. I’LL TRY TO MAKE IT AS SHORT AS POSSIBLE BUT I KNOW BEFOREHAND IT IS FOR SURE GONNA BE LONG. 

breaking down the character i can see clear signals of depression, anxiety disorder, agoraphobia, hikikomori syndrome and selective mutism; this last one is commonly mistaken with the autistic spectrum because the common knowledge is associating the non-verbal behavior with the autistic spectrum or cases of schizophrenia, but in fact, this condition is not only applicable to those disorders. in real life, some people have been diagnosed with autism when in fact they suffer selective mutism, so it’s better to actually understand the root of the disorder before jumping to conclusions and giving an actual diagnosis. 

let’s start with a short definition of each condition:

MAJOR DEPRESSIVE DISORDER: this condition affects negatively on the way a patient feels, thinks or acts. it causes severe feelings of sadness and in the majority of the cases loss of interest in activities that were formerly enjoyed. this also has an effect on the patient’s behavior and can also lead to physical problems. 

( SOCIAL ) ANXIETY DISORDER: a pretty common condition ( there are studies that say that nearly 30% of the adult population suffer from this disorder ). this is actually a normal reaction of the brain when it senses excessive fear or stress, it alerts our brain of possible danger and sometimes it can escalate and turn into panic attacks. 

AGORAPHOBIA: derives from the anxiety disorder. it is the fear of open, big spaces that can handle large crowds. usually the patient’s affected with this phobia feel fear mostly because they anticipate situations like using public transportation, standing in line, etc. it causes an immense fear that leads to panic attacks because they feel trapped, helpless or embarrassed. in some cases, this phobia starts because of previous panic attacks, so the patient will try to avoid those places and if something triggers that feeling, the phobia is going to act up.

HIKIKOMORI SYNDROME: this is a japanese culture-bound syndrome. it affects mostly young people in japan. they live isolated from the world, most of them locked down on their parent’s house ( some of the cases might communicate ONLY with their relatives. in the most severe cases they won’t speak to anyone at all ). this lock down can last days, months or years and it is heavily influenced by the internet and technology, as the it is their only escape. 

SELECTIVE MUTISM: also derives from anxiety disorder. the patient is unable to speak in CERTAIN social situations. it usually starts on childhood but it also affects adults. contrary to its name the person does not refuse to speak, they don’t have a choice as they are truly UNABLE to speak. certain people triggers panic on them and this causes the talking to be impossible, as it is an anxiety disorder, the person will anticipate situation as well that cause distress. however, despite of this trigger the people that suffer from this condition is able to speak freely to close family circles and friends as they don’t really trigger a freeze response on them. mostly this fear comes from the expectation the other person might have on them, and this provokes the anxiety causing a great difficulty responding or initiating verbal communication.

moving to her personality and background, from the very first moment we notice the anxiety coming from her, she is only able to communicate behind a screen and with an alias as she does not really completely trusts the phantom thieves. why do i think she has selective mutism instead of being under the autistic spectrum? easy, when you start the game you can notice sojiro constantly getting calls ( and we realize later on they were from futaba ). meaning that she is able to bond properly with him, sojiro even explains later on the game that she didn’t eat nor talk for a long time and little by little he was regaining her trust to let her know that she wasn’t alone. still, you can notice sojiro’s guilt as he is not able to take her out of the house and he is happy that at least she is eating but still you can see the traces of the depression and anxiety on her personality.

futaba explains her desire to die, a common thought that derives from depression as the people that suffer this condition usually see life as meaningless. she doesn’t want to be seen either, so she covers her face and any trace that could easily identify her because yet again, she needs trust to speak normally to another person, besides she has this constant fear of being judged which shows her anxiety. 

also a very important point is that people with this affections ( anxiety and selective mutism ) is that they might come off as RUDE or BLUNT ( something we notice on futaba ), because they are well, socially inept. however, as soon as she starts spending more time with the thieves she starts acting more relaxed and it’s when she starts showing her cheerful, childish side. i truly believe that these conditions started from her childhood, because as it is stated on her story line, she grew up being a lonely child. kids would just ignore her because she was considered a genius, her mother was never home and she started believing that her mother cared more about her research than being with her, this plus the lack of friendships and her mother’s dead only developed a severe anxiety disorder that later on was going to evolve in the conditions i explained previously. 

the thieves indeed help her to slowly start her process of overcoming her fears, and it shows that initially she didn’t really got along well with all of them, especially makoto because makoto has a more mature vibe than the others and this would only intimidate her and made it hard to actually catch her attention because most of the subjects makoto would bring were considered boring for futaba. remember that social anxiety causes that, you are not going to bond with everyone and only trust can lead to a relationship of reciprocate interest. 

overall, we can see how throughout the game she starts doing better. she creates a list with joker that allows her to conquer her own fears and well, after all everything is a process that takes years. she still relies a lot on the internet, but now she has real interaction and friends, but still when joker is about to leave she thinks about the possibility of them no talking to her anymore because akira is actually the glue in the group. of course thankfully it didn’t go that way, and they remained closed even after their leader left ( it’s canon on P5D don’t touch me ). akira is such an important figure for her as well, he has a lot to do with her improvement and i sense ADMIRATION coming from her, because akira is everything she would never dare to be. however the best chemistry she has among her friends are ryuji and yusuke, as they are easygoing, eccentric people and it’s easier to pick up trust on their personalities, as well as morgana as she shows a deep love for cats. ann, makoto and haru are the completely opposite of what futaba is yet the friendship still work because they take up on the big sis role for her. makoto is extremely mature so she actually helps her to find her boundaries, ann might have caused an issue on her self-esteem at some point but she also is someone she admires because futaba realized that she is not only looks, instead, she is an actual warrior who deals with a lot of things, and haru is the fluff ball that actually spoils her. all the different personalities among the group helps futaba towards her rehabilitation ( i’m sorry, i had to LMAO ). 

an important aspect is sojiro, HE DOESN’T PRESSURE HER INTO ANYTHING, he knows and understand what she is going through and he let her be because he is aware that HE CANNOT CHANGE HER. change and getting better is a personal decision, and of course a person needs support but you can’t actually do it for them. honestly, sojiro is a GREAT paternal figure and he deserves all the love he gets because he is so caring and understanding that he contributes to her growing. also the balance in the group of friends is really important for a person who suffers from severe anxiety disorders because it allows them to interact and explore things that are out of their comfort zone, and this is the case with the thieves. they are so different yet so similar that it is easy for her to understand how despite having a similar background it affects everyone differently, leading her to open up her mind a little and allowing her to understand that the change lies within her.

in summary, we can notice a big change on futaba, she is more comfortable outside and with people and she eventually will be over her traumas. remember that she is still growing up and she has a lot to go through, there will be good and bad times, probably future traumas that might affect her anxiety but that’s what i love about her character, it’s not about “getting cured of the conditions” is learning to live with them because they are apart of you. and this is what the character development on my futaba portrayal will go, it will be her accepting her anxiety and realizing that anxiety doesn’t control her but instead finding balance.

          even if almost a year already passed, futaba had to admit that she was still getting used to high school. there were times in which she still complained to sojiro that online classes were so much BETTER than going to shujin. but well, everyone basically LECTURED her that she needed to open up to people again. still against it, she barely had any friends ( to avoid saying that her only friend was basically sumire as everyone decided to follow their own path ). and the fact that there was going to be a photo day was STRESSING her more than usual. yusuke was her only HOPE in this case, after all he was obsessed with aesthetics and was an ARTIST after all. if he could draw, he could make her look pretty... right? 

            her logic was not exactly the best one, but that was also an EXCUSE to see yusuke before class. even if that meant that she made him wake earlier than usual, at least she knew that he was going to come anyway. so a few hours before their class actually started, she was PANICKING in her room, staring at the mirror while yusuke was with her. “maaaaaybeeeee-- a ponytail?!” she exclaimed as she held her hair with both of her hands, forming a ponytail as she looked back at yusuke, who immediately just looked at her and brushed the strains of her that were starting to fall because her arms were actually short to held her hair for long. blushing for a few seconds, that action got her by surprise and considering that her arms weren’t long enough to actually hold her hair properly, all the orange locks fell down in her usual hairstyle. so she took a step closer, holding onto the hem of yusuke’s shirt as she POUTED and looked up to his face.

            “inari.” she mumbled in a very pouty voice, standing on her tiptoes as she still was grabbing his shirt. “kiss?”

SAKURA FUTABA; BIRTH & EARLY LIFE               ( HEAVILY HEADCANON’D / CANON DIVERGENT )

                                               BECAUSE I DON’T GIVE A SHIT ABOUT CANON.

isshiki wakaba was a woman fully dedicated to her work. she would do ANYTHING for her research as this seemed to be the big deal and she was the one to discover it. we do not know much about wakaba, so i decided to explore this with a heavily science-fiction inspiration coming from media such as DEADMAN WONDERLAND and THE FIFTH ELEMENT. so please, enjoy.

wakaba used to work with her team and of course shido. there’s no much information about what type of people used to work for her, but it was sure that there was an university intern that was working with them as both of them had the same goal, understanding the meta-verse. this intern was of course, our beloved maruki takuto. 

around 2000, shido noticed that the research was going slow so he had big plans to make it faster and make sure he got exactly what he wanted out of it. with the lacks of proof, shido believed that if they had a SUBJECT they could experiment with their minds and get more information about this said meta-verse. wakaba of course didn’t want to be apart of it, and she said that they could perfectly work without experimenting on another human being. however, shido had other plans and he THREATENED wakaba if she didn’t follow his rules. still, wakaba was very much AGAINST that idea, but she also loved her work and she couldn’t risk all her investigation. besides, shido was a powerful man even back then so she knew if she didn’t follow his rules, he was going to simply kill her. so wakaba decided to yield to his whims. 

they didn’t know how to get this subject, some members of the team suggested that they could do it with a criminal, but shido abruptly interrupted with his crazy ideas suggesting that they should have a baby instead, teaching them their way and making sure that this kid grew up with the same capacity as them, in other words, he wanted to create a science genius that could explore and handle the meta-verse. his plans though, didn’t end there as he demanded wakaba to get pregnant as she was the only woman in the laboratory. yet again, she refused, she couldn’t do that at all, but the threatens simply got worse and she went alone with the plan, not to mention that she was still YOUNG at that time. now that shido had everything, what was missing was SPERM, as this baby had to be special he suggested to try in vitro fertilization. every man in the laboratory donated their sperm, but at the end shido decided that maruki’s was the one that fit better with wakaba’s genes. maruki wasn’t happy about the result, as he believed this was a CRUEL thing to do to a child. but who was he to oppose shido? everyone was afraid of that man. 

and just like that, wakaba carried the pregnancy. she still had doubts, but kept working and trying to clear her mind as this was done mostly out of passion for her work. but when the nine months passed and she was on the bed giving birth, as soon as she saw futaba’s face and grabbed her little hand she realized that she wanted to give the BEST to this child. she was her daughter after all, and she couldn’t put her under that stress. so wakaba LIED about the child, for many years. sojiro being the only one knowing about her existence. later on, wakaba’s brother realized that she indeed had the child and it was when he received money from shido when he decided to spill wakaba’s secret. of course shido wasn’t happy about it, so he decided to sabotage wakaba little by little until he finally killed her. he also never cared about futaba, always believed she was a weak child and was almost THANKFUL that someone like her wasn’t in the investigation as he found her annoying and not as a threat at all, so after a while, he simply forgot about her existence. 

after all the struggles the thieves had, they part ways as they decided to pursue their own life dreams while futaba stayed in town and enrolled in shujin. ( i refuse to think maruki became a taxi driver so i’m vanishing that ok ) maruki stayed at shujin, despite all his little drama in the meta-verse. one day, futaba decided to pay him a visit as there were still many chapters in her life she was unable to close. when she arrived to the office maruki wasn’t there, so she started looking around as the curious being she is, and it was when she found an old diary that contained subjects about the research that they didn’t know about. maruki came back, only to find futaba reading the book. 

“we need to talk.” he said, serious yet his voice sounded fainted. 

“am i that baby?” she asked, surprisingly not broken yet with traces of curiosity in her gaze. 

maruki sit down with her, offered snacks and an apple juice and started telling her the entire story. but futaba didn’t move nor say a word. she was shocked at most, trying to understand everything yet at the same time feeling relieved to know where she came from. and when maruki believed that it was a wrong idea to tell her, hoping that she wouldn’t break into a panic attack, she opened her mouth to speak:

“AWWW HOW COOL I’M LIKE A VIDEO GAME CHARACTER!!! i am not calling you dad, though!” 

maruki smiled. wakaba indeed raised an interesting being.

         “who are we talking about now?” eyes focused on her nintendo switch, but the MOCKING tone on her voice was visible as a chuckle fled from her lips. this was a RECURRENT thing, and it was tedious yet at the same time hilarious. akira was indeed CHARMING, but when it came about someone he liked he only acted this way. “maybe both? i don’t know man, your middle name is horny.”

i’m already at futaba’s palace and re-reading the story i cannot stop thinking about futaba’s last name. she is sakura, but her real name should be isshiki futaba. so either way when wakaba died sojiro changed her name or she had it since she was born.

i don’t think sojiro is her real father because obviously he is not, he states that he never knew the man and wakaba would never talk about it which actually makes it more believable that it was shido’s child ( even tho i really dislike that idea because if shido is her father then it means that she is most likely product of sexual abuse and yeah, i do not like that at all ). and wakaba KNEW that at some point something could happen to her, so what if actually she went to sojiro and asked him if she could have his last name, so in that case if something ever happened to her, sojiro was going to be her guardian because knowing wakaba, she probably already planned everything beforehand
