The first thing Buck notices when he turns onto his street is the fire truck parked outside his building.

No, two fire trucks he realises as he gets closer, their lights flashing amid a buzz of activity.

A police officer waves him down and he slows to a stop, rolling the window down.

"Uh, hi, is everything okay? I live here."

"There's been a fire, sir," the officer says, looking down at his clipboard. "Which apartment are you?"

"Mr Buckley?"

Buck's stomach twists with unpleasant anticipation.

"Yeah, that's me. What floor was the fire on?"

The officer grimaces a little.

"The fourth. Apartment 414."

Next door.

Not the kind of surprise Buck might have hoped for at 5am after coming off a twenty four from hell.

"The fire's out but your apartment may be damaged," the officer continues. "We're waiting on the fire captain to confirm the building is safe to re-enter."

"Yeah, it's alright, I'm a firefighter, I know the drill," Buck says, smiling at him.

The guy seems to visibly relax and Buck can only imagine how many irate people have shouted at him already, as if any of it was his fault; one of the perks of working with the public that Buck knew all too well.

"Shouldn't be too long," the officer says and Buck nods, pulling away to find a parking space.

Half an hour later and he's unlocking the door to his apartment, letting the captain of the 122 go in ahead of him to assess the damage.

It's definitely not habitable, that's for sure.

As well as the smell of smoke lingering thickly in the air, what's left of the wall between him and next door is blackened and damaged, the kitchen cabinets and appliances burnt beyond repair. Add to that the layer of water across the floor and Buck can't see himself being back here for a while.

"Sorry, kid," the captain says, turning to Buck with a grimace. "You got somewhere else to stay for a while?"

Despite everything, despite the fact that he's standing in the burnt out husk of his kitchen, his stomach flips excitedly at the question.

"Uh yeah, I can call Tommy, my boyfriend." He checks his watch. "Though he got off shift at 2am so he's probably sleeping."

"Firefighter too?" the captain asks, prodding at the damaged wall.

"Firefighter pilot, actually," Buck says, unable to help the proud little smile he always gets when he talks about Tommy.

"Wait," the captain replies, grinning, "you're not Kinard's boy, are you?"

Well doesn't that send a pleasant thrill down Buck's spine.

"Uh, yeah," he says, blushing a little. "You know him?"

"Just a little," the guy smirks, and Buck can tell there's some kind of history there, thinks he might actually recognise him from an old photo of the 118. "I hope you know he doesn't shut up about you. Do me a favour when you call, tell him he still owes Sal a beer, would ya?"

Overall, there's around 240,000 words of dialogue in the main game, which jumps up to about 311,000 if you include the DLC case.

Data source: I’m using a dataset that I put together pulling from the episode transcripts on the Ace Attorney wiki (which I did almost entirely via Python, but with a bit of manual cleanup). There’s bound to be some error resulting from that process, but the numbers should be pretty close.

🎃 Kirbtober 2024 Day 29: Trick or Treat 🎃

(ID: Kirby series fanart of the CFAU kids out trick-or-treating together, backlit by a large yellow moon peeking through the silhouettes of dead trees. Bow Dee - dressed as a shark - dashes ahead, holding a swirly halloween lollipop and roaring like a feral little beast. Some CFAU Halloween facts:

- Bow has worn that same shark costume every year since her first Halloween. It’s one of the few times in her childhood that she’s taken off her bow willingly for more than a few minutes.

- DDD saved up his allowance money for nearly a year to commission one of Bow’s moms (a former seamstress) to make that mask for him. She admits that she would’ve done it for free, but DDD’s papa insisted otherwise, hoping it might teach the boy about the value of money and paying folks fairly for their services (which it does... eventually).

- DDD’s mama tried to convince her son to wear a sweater due to the late-fall chill in the air, but he staunchly refused, claiming it wouldn’t be “authentic to the look.” They compromised by adding a blanket cape to his costume.

- Meta spent hours on his costume, consulting every book he could find at the Library Turtle for reference, agonizing over several "failed attempts" until he got it right. In the end, he managed to make himself into a fairly accurate replica of the Ancient hero... but had to make a few concessions, leaving the shield and pauldrons behind so he could carry his treat bucket (a difficult sacrifice, but a worthwhile one).

- Despite all his meticulous work, Meta leaves a trail of feathers behind them all night, his wings nearly bare by the time they return home to sort their candy. To his credit, he’d had some trouble applying them thanks to his limited reach, so - rather than leave his costume incomplete - he asked Para to help him out. (He’d considered asking DDD first… but the thought of the penguin touching his wings made his stomach feel funny. He’s not sure why.)

- Para’s outfit is a hand-me-down from one of his older siblings. It’s a bit snug and tends to chafe, not to mention entirely inaccurate to a real spacesuit… but it’s one of his favorite costumes of all time, the closest he’s ever been (in his youth, at least) to feeling like a real, honest-to-Nova astronaut.

- DDD gives all his chocolate candy to Meta without question. Bow steals everyone’s sour candy without asking. Para picks one grandma caramel from his pile and lets the others keep the rest. The four of them share a small bag of homemade checkerboard cookies provided by Para’s dad.

I got a question about casper mama

How did she react when she learned Casper has a crush on Wendy.

Probably something like this:

Elizabeth: *gasp* “No, you’re lying!”

Fatso: “Lizz, I’ve never lied to you, it’s true!”

Stinkie: “You should see his face anytime she comes around. It gets all all sparkly and he starts acting all gentlemen-like.”

Elizabeth: “Well, now I want to see it. That all sounds so precious!”

And so the three sneakily begin eavesdropping on Casper & Wendy. Where’s Stretch in all this? Honestly trying to get the three to leave the kids alone. But even he can’t help himself and hear what the two kids are talking about. And as expected, it’s about building forts, collecting seashells, and maybe even a cool rock two. All children’s stuff.

As the satnav of their hired car lures Miles off the motorway and onto a narrow countryside road, part of him can’t help but wonder if this entire journey is a mistake. 

Lead Me Down to the Ocean

“Oh Maxie, not again!”  

Alex fails to suppress a giggle as Miles’s stern warning goes unheeded by the excitable ball of fluff in question. Elated in his newfound freedom and having deemed himself the Almighty Ruler of this particular beach, Max gallops towards distant, frothy waves as fast as his little legs will carry him; tongue lolling in delight as he splashes in the cool water.   

Missed Your Bones on Me

Miles wakes alone. 

It takes a moment to figure out why this detail strikes him as unusual; why his heart quickens at the sight of bare sheets beside him. Waking up alone has been his reality for many months now, yet the undisputable fact of his solitude on this particular morning sends a pang through his chest that stings more than it should. 

I'll See You on the Dark Side of the Moon

While the lobby of Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino aims for a glossy façade of five-star luxury, Alex’s initial impression is one of nauseating gaudiness.  

His feet have landed upon spotless marble floors, but he retains little memory of them carrying him here. The reflective sheen of polished marble has the unwelcome effect of amplifying the atrium’s already eye-watering brightness; blinding beams shoot from a glittering overhead chandelier, its light bouncing off the walls in a coordinated assault on his retinas. Oversized leather couches in shades ranging from candy-apple red to rich burgundy coalesce around a coffee-table littered with flyers advertising the latest attractions and eateries, however no guests occupy the inviting space. Where one might expect to hear mindless chatter and slamming doors, there is only a gentle Morricone piece emanating from unseen speakers. A shiver caresses Alex’s spine as Edda Dell'Orso’s pleasant croon elicits an inviting air which feels wholly unearned. 

Hold Each Other Close the Whole Night Through

If heaven truly exists, Miles is sure he must have stumbled upon it.  

Contentment so profound his cheeks ache from smiling grips his soul as he leans against a pile of soft pillows; the sweet harmonies of ‘Pet Sounds’ caressing his ears as the album spins on a vintage record player. A soft breeze kisses his cheek as silk curtains part in the wake of its shallow breath, offering a glimpse of moonlit fields and a pitch-black sky dotted with gleaming stars. A symphony of crickets chirrup amidst the swaying grass, threatening to overwhelm Brian Wilson’s distinctive tenor, but Miles tunes them out easily as Alex’s laughter sets the air alight.
