man okay so I used to play mechquest and dragonfable back in like, 2008 when I was a kid with very little patience to follow a storyline. coming back as an adult and finishing mechquest has absolutely slapped me silly with how deep and serious the story is in between all the absurdist humour. I have. so many emotions over the whole storyline, and especially so many thoughts about the unique form of tragedy that is The Reset.

You save the world but it's not the world anymore. You and your friends survive but you don't know each other anymore- have nothing left of the lives you fought to keep. You 'save' everything but it's still all gone. Everything you knew and loved, gone, and you don't even know what you've lost. You can't even keep the memory of what you had- and that's almost kinder compared to being one of the 3ish people who DO remember... and have to live around everyone else who doesn't, knowing their closest friends look at them and see a stranger, and that they may as well be because they aren't that person they remember being.

And to top it all off, that terrible sacrifice doesn't even end it. you're still left fighting impossible and devastating wars over and over. It's the tragedy of doomed time loops with extra layers of devastating all over the place. The GEARS University students being forced to become soldiers because they're all that's left to protect their homeworld. The horrors of the Shadowscythe virus taking over friends and loved ones you may be forced to put down to save yourself. The town of Falconreach burning over and over because no matter how hard they fight, it's never enough. The people like Sha'rae who sacrifice themselves to try and prevent tyrrany from seizing power, only for it to be utterly useless.

Anyway the brainrot is severe and especially dangerous since I'm coming into exam season and all my hyperfixated brain wants to do is chew on glass about these games.

One thing I absolutely adore in sickfics with a group of friends is playful teasing/banter.

Somebody has a bad cold. Their friends are all like:

"Mate, you are literally a walking Lemsip advert."

"You look like... if death had a horrible cold."

"Never before have we had such strong visual supporting evidence of the importance of washing your hands."

"Ah, finally. The answer to the question: 'What if nasal congestion took on human form?'"

"What do you mean, if you get any sicker? If you got any sicker, you'd be six feet under, my man."

In both forms, the butt of the joke is the people attracted to (odd thing). The difference is that "you can't fuck this" comedy forces other people to be the punching bag, and "hear me out" comedy makes themselves the punching bag.

I think both forms of comedy depend on the pushback for being attracted to (odd thing). In one form it's "I'm a freak hehe" and in the other it's "y'all are a bunch of degenerates".

It also just starts more arguments. Whether or not someone's joking about being attracted to the color mauve, if they believe color mauve is either a potentially consenting adult or inanimate object that can't be hurt, it's fine. Essentially shaming people for being attracted to odd stuff just starts more arguments. And there's definitely a real percentage of people who like that content because they genuinely want to shame people.

They're also just so unfunny. I scrolled through multiple months worth of posts from a "you can't fuck this" blog before I got the joke. Even then I still can't shake that their comedy seemingly revolves around being the idiot, which isn't obvious to someone who genuinely agrees or disagrees with them.

The quiet statement, uttered with a now familiar tone of mild exasperation softened with a plainly fond edge, has a smile - gentle, subtle - lifting the corners of the Duke's mouth. It is reassuring to him that things have not changed all that much between them, all things considered, that they are, in every way that matters, the same people from before. Well... no, that assessment is not entirely accurate, of course. They have changed, but not in any way that would damage the very thing that drew them together in the first place - only in ways to strengthen those once fragile tethers of a budding bond.

They sit, for once not within the confines of the Iudex's office, at that little table by the window where a tea station sits ready, nor within the far less grand walls of his underwater domain, but instead upon a grassy bank beside lapping waves, alone but for the occasional visit of a passing critter. A rare moment in time where their schedules permit them to indulge in an hour or two of privacy, of reprieve, before the call of responsibility summons them back.

"Well, difficult is better than boring," he replies, leaning back on his hands as a wintry gaze glides over the handsome profile of the man beside him. "And fun..." A tease creeps into his tone, as equally fond as the exasperation in the other's. "You surprise me, Neuvillette. I wasn't aware you were familiar with the sentiment."

"I jest, of course." He exhales a gentle breath, tipping his head back to look instead upon the sky above them, the day's light slowly shifting towards early evening. "Though I do think you're the first to apply the word fun where I'm concerned. It's certainly not the usual perception of my character."

He shifts, and his shoulder presses gently to Neuvillette's in a deliberate point of contact. "You've always seen more than most, of course. Maybe that's why I value your judgement over any other's," he pauses, chuckles, "well, that and Sigewinne's, of course. Between the two of you, a man might start to feel good about himself. Better be careful I don't let it go to my head, eh?"

Neuvillette's hand rests within the grass between them, and bound fingers slowly creep their way to tangle, lightly, with gloved ones. It is a small gesture, but one that serves to convey that, beneath his jokes and his humorous misdirection, the sentiment offered by Neuvillette's words means a great deal.

His head tips to the side, not quite falling to rest against Neuvillette's, but close enough in proximity for it to be as good as. Alone they may be, but one can never be too careful out in the open, and he is not ready to share this... development... with anyone else. Not yet. "I can only hope you never get bored of me, or that I don't make things too difficult for you."

Short Prompt #3

TW: Destruction, blood, screaming mention

Bits of shrapnel and rock fly everywhere, and tendrils of smoke seem to snake up from the ground. The sounds of screaming civilians and wailing sirens echo through the air. A gaping hole is burnt into one section of the asphalt road, the size of a small crater.

A tall figure, dressed all in black, so menacing that the mere sight of them sent people scrambling away in fear makes their way down the completely demolished street, glass crunching under their boots.

Lowering the hood of their cloak, they saunter into what was supposed to be a coffee shop, to find the barista seemingly unfazed, standing behind the counter nursing a bleeding nose.

"Where is Hero?" they demand, voice thundering.

Civilian effortlessly meets their diamond-hard gaze, and without missing a beat, they reply in a monotone, "Sir, this is a Starbucks."

*Note: I used 'sir', cuz that's the meme format, this can easily be changed to ma'am.
