im terribly bored and not doing well so im scraping the bottom of the barrel for entertainment which means i am watching the incorrect quotes video.
trying to be objective i think they’re fine, i think i don’t find them as funny mostly because ive seen them many times so i know the punchlines, which isn’t their fault. with the ones i do not know the punchline i do smile a bit. and for like half of those i do think “oh yeah this is something they would say”
anyways that’s a lukewarm take not worthy of writing a whole post about, im actually here to complain because ive been listening to the magnus archives (literally just finished the third episode of season 5 before watching this) and that quote about the cows i just :/
i don’t know if the problem lies in thomas’ execution or in the concept of incorrect quotes or in the choice of the quote by the fan or anywhere else but i’m upset.
i do like incorrect quotes, they can be funny and they’re not always the destroyer of literary comprehension some people make them out to be. like anything from fandom, it’s not great if you only see the characters through that lens and people will reduce characters to overused tropes and will project stuff that isn’t even close to canon on them but the fault of that is, i think, mostly on the people doing it and not in the concept of incorrect quotes or shipping or headcanons or whatever. incorrect quotes can be fun and can suck just like anything else. i mean they’re not the same a shipping because at least with that the purpose sometimes is to enrich the story or the understanding of the characters while quotes are just there to be fun. but i think it’s fine to have something that’s just for fun.
the problem is that to do them smartly you have to be careful, because taking something from one work to the other might not be as easy. many times the joke relies on pre-established stuff like character traits or relationships or world building which you didn’t really notice when seeing/listening to it in its original source until you picture it with new characters. it has happened to me that i think i can make something into an incorrect quote and then realize that it just doesn’t work. and some people do not notice this or think that it’s fine cause they assume the person reading the quote will know the original source and will be able to make the relevant associations.
and then add the layer of translating a quote from media like tv or film or audio into writing, (which often causes some quotes to be bad because the original relied on visual context or the delivery, the timing, the sound effects, etc), and then on top of it all we have thomas only seeing the quote written down and interpreting it back into acting.
he did a good job i think in the first incorrect quotes video because his performance added to the quote. it was funnier with his voice and acting than written down. i assume he doesn’t go watch/listen to the source of the quote before interpreting it, and im not sure that’s really a necessary thing, but that disconnect can definitely make the final result even messy sometimes. when it’s quotes from like brooklyn 99 and parks and rec and such it’s mostly fine because they’re short dialogues made to be comedic by themselves and that’s what this type of show is absolutely full of. but with other things, especially works from other genres you gotta be careful.
anyway that’s all to say that “obviously i’ll tell you if i see any good cows” means so much to me and carries this… emotional weight due to its context.. and you just can’t slap any random character names on it and call it a day. at least that’s what i think.
it’s not just about the cute idea of “seeing good cows”, its the love in that quote that is so. subtle and rare and unlikely within the terrible circumstances the characters are in. the domesticity and fondness is a soft sliver of comfort after the previous episode and before that big ending of season 4. it’s lovely and sweet and domestic while enveloped by previous, present and future loss and pain.
it’s NOT a character who is being treated as some kind of himbo telling another character (with huge arm gestures) “yes OBVIOUSLY i’ll tell you if i SEE any Good Cows 🙄🙄🙄 pssht”
it’s not about the cows 😭 does that make sense? 😭
#ts criticism#thomas sanders#am i just looking for stuff to complain about? absolutely#can i do that because it’s my blog and i chose what to do with it? absolutely as well#will i delete this post in a day or less? maybe

Chapter 7 of Time’s Arrow, “I love everybody because I love you! // But I'm a chemical compound, You're just the gun in my mouth” is here!
Memento mori. Unus Annus. /ref
PLEASE READ THE WARNINGS AND PROCEED WITH CAUTION. THIS CHAPTER IS ROUGH.
Details below! (Format is funky because I am on mobile rn. Will be fixed later!)
- The lyrics for this chapter’s title are from “Strawberry Blonde” by Mitski and “Gross” by Penelope Scott! The first part is for the majority of the chapter, as it reflects how happy and filled with love Beej is feeling. The other one is for the last scene. :)
- “I wanna remember this moment.” “Every detail. I don’t wanna forget a single one.” - this is inspired by a similar scene in “Parks and Rec”, one of my favorite shows!! Specifically the scene where Ben proposed to Leslie.
- “ “Hm?” Beetlejuice titled their head a little, then pursed their lips as the words processed in their slow, stuttering mind.” - Auditory processing disorder my beloathed. It takes a sec for the info to hit the brain!
- “ “Like, worse than ‘Spiral’.” Beetlejuice gasped, placing a hand on his chest. … “Okay. Now I gotta know. What’s worse than ‘Spiral’?” ” - “Spiral” is the worst of the Saw movies. I will die on this hill. Beetlejuice saw this as the high insult it is.
- “.. I know I’m regaining some weight, but-” - THE RETURN OF THE KING.
- “I’ll have to go back to school. No more online-only.” - Ash straight up lied to the school and said she went with her parents and sister to Massachusetts so she could do all her schooling online.
- “… wanna watch ‘Renfield’?” - “Renfield” is spectacular. Amazing. Showstopping. But someone in Beej’s particular situation should not be watching it for reasons that would be spoilers for that wonderful movie. Go watch it!!!
- The whole dinner cheek kiss thing was planned by Barbara and Adam! They made sure Beetlejuice was okay with telling others first, but he wasn’t sure how to, so they took matters into their own hands!
- “ “I always wondered about you three,” he heard Charles say. He almost thought he heard a twinge of fondness to his voice, but he was certain he must be imagining things. “Good for you all.” ” - Poly ally. He saw their slow burn romance from a million miles away and decided to let them all sort it out on their own. And yes it WAS FONDNESS. Beetlejuice just won’t accept it yet.
- Delia is trying to figure out what prescription glasses to get Beetlejuice on her own, with the help of the Internet! It’s very tough when he doesn’t cooperate.
- “We’ve read two books together now.” … “Or do I just have ‘The Great Gatsby’ and ‘Frankenstein’ memorized?” - Beetlejuice read “Frankenstein”, like Lydia suggested! They loved it.
- Yes that is an actual passage from “The Great Gatsby”. No I am not sorry. Yes it is extremely thematically relevant.
- “They reached up to scratch at an itch on their scalp, clacking their teeth.” - they scratched it like a dog does. They always do!
- The second passage Beetlejuice quotes is from “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight”. It is one of his (and my own, I almost named myself Gawain) favorite old tales. He has referenced it before, and it comes up quite a few times again! Even later in this chapter. ;) (And yes it is extremely thematically relevant. Sorry not sorry I am hiding the foreshadowing and themes in other stories..)
- “ Delia grinned wide, exchanging some sort of glance with Barbara. “It’s not too much?” The demon lightly shook their head. “Splendid!” ” - I wonder what this is about?
- “I say it’s too bold of a departure, if you ask me.” - This is a reference to Beetlejuice’s first line in the musical! Also a jab at myself. LoopJuice is perhaps too bold a departure from the original source material…
- “Images of kisses pressed to their temple, their cheek, their jaw, memories of sweet words, gentle little pleads and promises flashed through their mind. Pink rose in their chest, warmth burned in their cheeks. They inevitably gave in, of course.” - EASILY WON OVER BY KISSES AND PETS. What a fool! /hj
- “They think perhaps this is the closest they’ve ever felt to being happy. Not just slightly sardonic or glibly nihilistic, but happy. Like real people do.” - Part of this is a reference to the last scene in “BoJack Horseman”, since that show influenced how I write quite a bit. And the last part is a reference to “Like Real People Do” by Hozier, which is on my Beetlands playlist!
- “No, perhaps this was normal, he decided.” - It is not. There are two reasons! 1. Beej’s permanent frostbite damage making him more susceptible to cold 2. Cyrus is straight up lurking here. He is nearby and watching him.
- “It scratched at the back of his mind like a wild hound begging to be let in the house, asking for shelter from the storm. Only to savage the home’s inhabitants. Where had it come from? What storm was it hiding from? Fuck. Where the hell is my head right now?” - Self roast. Sometimes I go too crazy with the poetic descriptions…
- “Beetlejuice briefly wondered if the cold could drive a demon mad. He thought maybe he’d read about it happening to breathers before.” - This is a real thing! He’s specifically thinking about the Donner Party.
- “Less and less of you will be left each day, slowly siphoning out until you are empty.” - sorry not sorry, another “The Fall of the House of Usher” show reference. Mike Flanagan is my bestie.
- “ “Your time.” Beetlejuice clenched their jaw as his words rippled through their mind. Darling, I only want your time. They gasped in shuddering breaths, their ears going back. Give me your time. Fuck.” - took him a while, but he finally caught the obvious loophole! Far too late, unfortunately.
- “Ah, what was that wonderful phrase from the inane little story you enjoyed so much said?” Cyrus’ grin widened impossibly. “One year hence.” - He is referencing “The Green Knight”! This is what the Green Knight says to Gawain to let him know his fate is sealed. Also, note the difference between Barbara showing interest in one of his favorite stories, while Cyrus belittles it.

What We Do in the Shadows: The Roast (5x08)
Oh my god, this was an AMAZING episode.
Cons:
I feel bad for continuing to harp on this, but The Guide continues to feel like such a wasted character! I like the performance, I don't think it has to be this way, there could be some really funny stuff here! But instead it's the same joke again and again. It's like she's the Jerry from Parks and Rec or the Toby from The Office. But this show didn't really need that, they're all a bunch of losers, and there's already the vampires treating Guillermo like he's disposable to fall back on as a joke? I don't know. She had plot relevance this week, but it feels like we could have done this without her.
Pros:
Lazlo's ennui was really funny, the way he keeps dismissing everyone's attempt to snap him out of it... one of the funniest exchanges was right at the top, when Nadja and Nandor were talking about Lazlo lacking interest in his old hobbies: Nadja - "We are down to like sixteen fucks a week." / Nandor - "We're down to three". And Nadja reaches out and puts a hand on Nandor's arm, in horror and sympathy to hear something so terrible! That really made me laugh.
Honestly, this episode was laughs all the way through, I can't even pick favorite lines from everyone. But I loved Colin's failed roast of Lazlo, I loved Nadja saying that maybe dying wouldn't be so bad, and Nandor being like "wtf" and then Nadja being like "I've just been going through a lot lately."
The main plot here is that the Baron discovers that Guillermo was the one who accidentally burned him up a few years ago, and he wants revenge. As ridiculous as all the antics were, I was also genuinely moved by Nadja and Nandor both begging for Guillermo's life and trying to dissuade the Baron. But at the same time, they're all worried about Guillermo killing the Baron, because he's the origin of their line of vampires, and his vampire descendants might die as well! What a fun and twisted web of allegiances. Guillermo doesn't try and kill the Baron, in part because it puts his friends at risk. And yet his friends can't let the Baron kill Guillermo either!
Things are... sort of resolved... when Guillermo tells the Baron that he has renounced his vampire killing family legacy by becoming a vampire himself. The Baron finds the whole situation with Nandor not being the one to change him kind of hilarious and he's also sympathetic to Guillermo because of it, so he calls off his vengeance. And then... Guillermo accidentally burns him in the sunlight again.
Genuinely, the sight of Nandor clutching Guillermo's sweater, and then his grief when he sees "Guillermo" dead on the ground in front of him... I'm sure the whole fandom is celebrating hardcore. It was so much. Pair that with the utterly callous way that Lazlo guts the corpse, to show everyone that it's not really "Gizmo", but one of his clone experiments gone awry... this show is utterly ridiculous in the very best way.
The sweet Guillermo and Nandor moments don't stop there. When Nandor finds Guillermo hiding in his coffin, after thinking he has fled never to be seen again, he asks him questions to make sure it's the real him. One of them is, what's in the card you gave to me the first day you were my familiar? And Guillermo quotes it exactly, with Nandor mouthing along. "To be a vampire is my dream, but to be your familiar would be my honor." What the heck kind of high romance? Amazing. I can't believe next week we're going to see Nandor find out about Guillermo at last. Everyone's been building up again and again how Nandor will be forced to kill Guillermo and then himself. I wonder what's going to happen!
Turns out, Lazlo's strange mood was just because he was trying to figure out how to alphabetize his books. I love this gag as like... a fun example of what longevity and immortality might really be like. You can afford to just space out for a couple weeks to make a decision if you like! There's so much time stretched before you.
It was so funny to see Doug Jones as the Baron, sans any weird crazy make-up or prosthetics, only for the episode to involve him getting all burned up and disfigured again. I guess he's back to untold hours in the makeup chair any time he's on this show! I love it. I also loved how the Baron accepted Guillermo as a vampire right away, in a way the others who are in the know haven't quite done. He's all-in for his fellow vamps, and now he's got a bunch of Guillermo animal clones to hang out with at his place!
I'm not ready for this season to be over, it all happened too quickly! This may be the best episode of the season.
9.5/10

Who is your current muse, and who is their faceclaim/what do they look like? What is one item that you associate without fail to them? What is their favourite colour? Is there a song you associate with them? If not, what quote fits the best for them? What do they like doing in their spare time? How much spare time do they get? What one fact do you love about them, but might not have had the chance to share yet?
My current muse is Andrea "Andy" Pereira, an OC from the Parks & Rec fandom who is in a queerplatonic relationship with another one of my creations Stephen Sebastian Knope-Wyatt. (I know technically he's canonised as of the farewell season, but due to my interpretations and heavy cultivation of a personality and life-story for him, I consider him oc-status. If you will... a #Schrödinger'sOC, as I've come to dub these types of characters.)
Andy doesn't have a face claim currently, but she does have a pinterest board which includes a general visage close to the one I hold in my head. In terms of visuals, the closet I have come to finding an fc is Sophia Black-D'elia (image at bottom), but I'm not completely sold on her. For now, Andrea remains officially face-claim-less.
—
Several items make me think of her, such as big hiking backpacks or converse shoes paired with flannel, but I think the most 'Andy' object would be those white, tin mugs you take on camping trips for your morning coffee. Her favourite thing? Opening up the back of her offroading vehicle and screwing on the gas canister for her little JetBoil stove to make coffee at 5:30 am just so she can watch the sun rise with a hot drink in her hand. She started doing this long before she met Stephen, long before she even left South America.
—
Andy's favourite colour is the kind of orange you only see in a mountain sunset, somewhere where the air is so clear you cannot smell the industrialisation anymore. Somewhere where the water runs crystalline blue and the birds cross the sky without a flap in their wings, the smoothest soar. A place where no one knows; a sunset no one else will ever see. An orange so vibrant, it's fire without the burn. An orange she would never have seen in the smoggy, polluted city she grew up in.
—
Two songs I associate with Andy:
Some Italian Mountain - Sophie May
And I hate to admit it But I can't wait till October when I'm allowed to escape him And move my life to some Italian mountain Mmm mmm mmm mmm
Traffic in the Sky - Jack Johnson
It's enough to make me cry But that don't seem like it would make it feel better The answers could be found, we could learn from diggin' down But no one ever seems to be diggin'
—
In her spare time, she loves kicking back with a good book. While a solid majority of the time, you can find her pushing the boundary of human-recognised lands, she isn't above every now and again recollecting herself with a sit in and a good book, especially if she and Stephen find a good place to park their van on some West Coast desert land. Oh, with the sun shining down just right... after whipping out the camp stove to make a little noontime meal... She'll set up her canvas chair, take out her current read, and while away the rest of the daylight hours getting lost in the words.
—
Due to the nature of her living situation right now (aka: she lives a nomadic life in a van), she has a lot more spare time than most people do these days. That being said, she still has a job to ensure that she can afford this lifestyle. She (very strictly, might I add) makes sure her work doesn't go past 5pm, as she is very conscience of the line between "work" and "rest", guarding her free time with her life. Andy believes there is more to life than work. She believes, first and foremost, in experiences and living.
—
Not particularly a fact I love about them (although it's not like I hate the fact lolol) but a fact I'm proud of creating for her is about her origin town as it weaves its way into who her character is currently. She was raised on the cusp of poverty in a city where the streets were dingy and the air a polluted, breathing hazard. Growing up, she hated it and would often spend her afternoons picking up trash along the sidewalks of her neighbourhood. As soon as she was able to, Andy left home for wider, cleaner pastures (so to speak). She saved up money in a piggybank all her teen years to backpack in the Andes, which wasn't enough by far but that didn't stop her; with an old rucksack, a sleeping bag given to her by one of the climbers she met passing through her town one day, and plastic baggies of food and safety equipment and toiletries, she set off. The people she met along the trail, some of them became her friends, and one of them... became her best friend: Stephen Sebastian Knope-Wyatt. That was the first time he helped her out of a jam (after all, she was ill-prepared for backpacking despite her best efforts), and since, they've been helping each other since.

Guess what show this is from!-
Xiaodie (Mari): hey, I love you.
Wukong: dude, shut up! That is awesome sauce! (Hold hand up air for high five)
*later*
Xiaodie: Wujing can you please be quiet! I can’t hear myself not talking to Wukong!
Wukong: Master, will you please tell me why Xiaodie is mad at me!
Xiaodie: Sanzang! Can you please tell Wukong-
Sanzang: All of you be quiet! Wukong, she’s mad because you said awesome sauce instead of ‘I love you too.’ Xiaodie, he loves you. Stop being a child! Bajie, you’re clearly at fault here! Blaming Wujing won’t save you! Wujing! We both know you were shotgunning moon cakes instead of watching Ao Lie! So everyone apologize to everyone else!
Ngl I had to search this up to find out that it was a Parks and Rec scene. I've never watched a single episode of that show aside from tiny clips, but I do know and love the "decapitated head on a stick" quote by Leslie and the "Who broke it?" scene.
Poor Xiaodie. It took her so long to finally say "I love you" and this is the outcome. The Heavenly Bureaucracy is groaning up above because they too have been invested in this frustrating former will-they-won't-they relationship for the longest 3–5 years of their immortal lives. Wukong's clever, but clearly no one's ever taught him how to properly woo someone.
Sanzang, the tired parent of the group trying to get his children to make up! LMAO I love that! I think what would add to the hilarity of this is that they're stuck in some demon's trap like how everyone was stuck on a ferris wheel in the original scene. The monk knows that there's no hope of getting out if nobody is getting along.
Huh. I'm surprised that Wujing was the one stuffing himself with moon cakes. That's usually a Bajie thing.
Maybe I should watch Parks and Rec.

How about 1, 29, 55, & 126 for the book rec ask game.
omg. why did my answer turn out so long!?! ridiculous. but thanks for asking, dot!!! thanks for letting me play. :) 1. a book that is close to your heart Little Women and Tuesdays with Morie. i grew up on the 90s version of the Little Women movie, which led me to read the book for the first time in 7th or 8th grade. i’ve read it several times since and love how much it makes me care about all four March sisters. i used to have more of a temper like Jo and long for nice things like Amy. and i thought it was nice how, as they get older, they didn’t lose who they are but they did get a little softer around the edges. i think even as a kid, that gave me hope. Tuesdays with Morie is another one i first read when i was pretty young (high school not middle school) and have several times since. there are some “zen” messages i still carry with me. here’s a quote as an example: the culture we have does not make people feel good about themselves. and you have to be strong enough to say if the culture doesn't work, don't buy it.” honorable mention: Committed: A Skeptic Makes Peace with the Institution of Marriage. do i have that subtitle right? it’s something like that. it’s one of the first books i read that weaves social science research into a more personal narrative, and i really enjoyed that. some parts of this book stuck out to me enough to use as a framework when writing the ceremony for my wedding (friend officiated). but that’s personal enough i’ll keep the details to myself. 29. your favourite YA novel for quite a while, YA was all i read. so i feel like i should have a long list that i’m struggling to choose from. but most YA leaves me thinking, “great idea, but B- on the execution.” (saying that makes me feel like a snob but whatever, it’s true). i will stand by the first book in the Hunger Games series being great and worth the hype. i read it again a year or two ago and it is very well crafted. sharp characterization, great pacing, background information weaved throughout in just the right way. too bad the later books didn’t keep up. Elanor & Park was one a read after hearing about it a million times and worried it wouldn’t live up to the hype. i don’t remember it that well now, but i remember liking it even more than i hoped it would. one of the characters with poverty and abuse and i thought it tackled those issues in a believable, not-at-all-cheap-or-gimmicky way. i read The Spectacular Now because i really liked the movie. and while the main character drives you crazy after a while, i think that’s kinda the point. he’s a mess and needs to learn about growing up and being considerate of others. similar to Elanor & Park, i thought this book handled teenagers going through rough stuff in a believable way. 55. a book with a satisfying ending is it weird to say Gone Girl? the ending was frustrating for me the first time i read it, i guess because i wanted something happier. but it’s satisfying in that, upon second read, i accepted that the author knows her characters better than i do and she wrote an ending that made perfect sense for how unhinged and unhealthy they are. i also have to admit that as i get older, i understand Amy’s resentments more and believe Nick’s bullshit less. so even though Amy’s totally off her rocker and should, logically speaking, be in jail, i’m glad Nick doesn’t get a normal happy ending. it’s just so messed up its satisfying, you know? 126. your favourite spring read
interesting and timely question! unfortunately, i don’t tend to have seasonal reading habits. can i tell you what my dad’s answer would be? he likes a book called Vipers’ Tangle (google just told me it’s sometimes called The Knot of Vipers since it’s originally written in…. french, maybe? it’s from the 50s). its set around Easter, so…. i’ve tried to read it around Easter too, but i haven’t managed to get very far with it. if i had to choose something i’ve personally read…. maybe something by Brene Brown. ya know, non-fiction stuff about how vulnerability is actually bravery and people are built for deep connections and we have to be willing to take a little emotional risk to make deep connections happen. that sounds good for spring, right? growth!!

More Fic Recs
Back at it again! I’ll keep posting these until I’ve recommended everything in my bookmarks plus more probably. List under the cut!
getting (back together) over her by Letterblade
so this one is rated explicit, read at your own risk. That being said, it’s excellent, a great Aang exploration and a pretty realistic look at how being 12 for a hundred years would make one feel
plus I have at least one quote from this story living rent-free at all times in my head, please read it, i can’t be the only one
The Family You Choose by TunaFishChris
another soulmark AU fic! This one is a platonic story about the Gaang finding out about Zuko’s past. It’s a cool soulmark system that I don’t think I’ve ever read before and is very awesome in execution!
Team Building Exercise ‘99 by regents
a story about the Parks and Rec crew and three different team building exercises over three different years as told through the eyes of Ron Swanson. It is an excellent characterization of Ron Swanson and you should read it for the comedy factor alone
A Study in Asexuality by ladyxdarcy
rated mature for a lot of potentially triggering subject matter, this Sherlock fic is excellent. It’s a character study of Sherlock and specifically his asexuality, his relationship with John and how those two things interact. It has enough assurance and comfort to make up for every bit of hurt in the hurt/comfort and ends SO happily
Stay by Valentined
never played Subnautica? doesn’t matter! This is such a good, sad, story that leaves you with a lump in your throat and a ridiculous feeling of nostalgia for an alien planet you’ve never been to.
I should note though, there are huge spoiler warnings. This fic basically ruins the end of the game, so if you DO want to play Subnautica and haven’t yet, go play it and then come read this
And All of This, Exactly That by antistar_e
an old fic from the Percy Jackson and the Olympians franchise, released the year after the last book in the original series was published. This story is about a relationship between Percy, Annabeth, and Rachel and is atmospheric and beautiful. It’s also funny and has a dragon in it, so that makes it automatically great
This Is an Essay by Dee_Laundry
I wish Harry Potter was narrated by Margaret instead of Harry. This is a fic absolutely dripping with personality and humour that is about a Gryffindor student in Harry’s third year who is neat, methodical, and autistic. “Margaret would rather write the same thing a hundred times.” and I would let her.
Dr. Stirling’s Purple Pill by Ashling
this is a short, funny story about one of L.M. Montgomery’s sadly underrated works. The characters are brilliant and their voices are captured perfectly.
between the shadow and the soul by deliarium
this fic feels like a missing chapter from The Blue Castle. The haunting prose of the original is reproduced beautifully here and it’s some of the most gorgeous, intimate prose I’ve ever read.
Jack Frost and the Shadows of Van der Bor by emanime5
an RotBTD Harry Potter AU. Full of friendship, magic, and adventure it’s continuing proof that literally anyone except Rowling should be hired to write her works.
Like A Fist In The Eye by soulsolid
a funny and in-character soulmate AU that pairs Jack Frost and Merida. It’s also a college AU so that just adds the cute and fast-paced atmosphere.
Eternity in a Kiss by Snacky
a fun and evocative story of Mary and Bert’s relationship as told through Bert’s eyes. It involves Bert being magic (because of course he is) and a bunch of fun, stealth crossovers!
seriously though, if you want to guess the crossovers on your own, don’t read the comments until after you’re done the fic
