Leaping across my walls and chewing on the bars of my cage about a romanced lich!emmrich timeline where rook dies and he becomes a super powerful tough boss fight for the next dragon age protagonist. And there's journal pages scattered around the area he's found in, detailing the months leading up to rook's death as well as the excruciating decline in his mental well-being and overall emotional stability following the loss. Maybe it was slow, something that couldn't be stopped but they both saw coming. Some sickness. He obsessed over finding a cure but he couldn't. No one could. And during the fight he has lines where he's just so emotionally fixated on rooks death and he's like "what was the point of it all, without you...." and "if I had just searched harder... longer..." and by the end of the boss fight the fifth protag is like "damn. I dunno if this guy deserved to die... he was pretty fucked up." And then they just move on and never speak of it again. It would be a minor side quest btw. Something that doesn't get much to reminisce about.

Or or or!!!! During the boss fight you get to meet rook. And it's horrible. It's awful. They've become twisted and vengeful and mindless. They're just bones but emmrich has made them glitter and shine with gems and gold and whatnot. But emmrich still just sees them like nothing's changed. He has lines about fixing them and "working out the kinks" or something. They're really annoying because their attacks are fast and hard to dodge. And they leap all over. Like an attack dog. Like a beast.

I do want to point out:

Ludinus knowing Laerryn's name is not, in and of itself, proof that he was alive during the Age of Arcanum.

Laerryn was on his list of "people to reach out to." But this document was in his home in Molaesmyr, a city he arrived in 500 years post-Divergence. Why would he keep that document, knowing that Laerryn fell with Avalir and that her body was irrecoverable? Why would it be pinned on his wall like it's important, over 500 years after Laerryn's death when speak with dead is off the table?

We know that Avalir itself is known about in present-day Exandria by esoteric scholars and specialists. Imahara Joe has a book that talked about it, so it's not like it's completely forgotten, and honestly, the entirety of the Ring of Brass were so involved with Avalir's internal politics and inner workings that there's no way their names weren't written down a hundred times over in various records, reports, and news clippings. It's not out of the realm of possibility that Ludinus was able to get ahold of this information, especially with Laerryn being so prominently involved with Avalir's most intricate arcane mechanics and experiments.

So I think that this list was of people Ludinus wanted to contact using the contact other plane spell. It reads as follows:

When you cast this spell, make a DC 15 Intelligence saving throw. On a failure, you take 6d6 psychic damage and are insane until you finish a long rest. Personally, I think that Laerryn would most definitely count as "the spirit of a long-dead sage," as would most other pre-Calamity archmages (which I can only assume Vishtaron and Vatora were). The spell is on the wizard and warlock spell lists, so it's entirely within the realm of possibility for Ludinus -- plus, it even plays into his particular flavor of anti-theist magic, since it's essentially a non-divine version of commune.

So far I've had speak with dead as day 1 and Hallucinatory terrain (the one spell I DIDN'T want) as day 2! I think I made it work with the totally not a hag in her totally real garden!

Ok I'm thinking about kabuto backstory again and thinking about how unfair and fucked up it all is like

How fucked up is it to threaten these people into working as spies for you "for the good of Konoha", and then decide that these people (who have given NO INDICATION of intending to betray Konoha) are too good at being spies and thus Too Dangerous and should be killed for it.
