In the ffnet days we searched for and read according to who the main character of a fic was, because that was what ffnet let you search for.

Now in the day of AO3 we search for and read according to what the ships are, because that's what AO3 facilitates searching for.

Its not surprising these days to see a lot more ship focused fic, as opposed to main character focused fic; because that's what's easiest to sort for.
