Finally talking about Batman Caped Crusader (and villains I want in it)

So, up until now, I haven't shown my love of batman, bat-rogues and dc villains in general on this blog, but having finished and marinated on the first season of the phenomenal Caped Crusader series, I've decided to change that.

The show is basically everything I wanted it to be, and though the way its plots are carefully threaded together and amazing, it's the characters, especially the villains, that stand out.

And since arguably the biggest thing about this series is the ways it's reinventing the villains it uses, I thought the best way to start talking about it was to run through some ideas I've had on how it might portray various rouges going forward.

Starting with Scarecrow, as he's been referenced twice in the series. A blink and you'll miss it easter egg in episode 5 shows a self help book written by Dr. Jonathan Crane, which makes me wonder if this take on Scarecrow will lean more towards something like the guru working for Scarecrow in the TNBA episode Never Fear, or possibly a more diluted character who genuinely believes he's helping people overcome their fears.

Moving on to speculative characters, after some thought I've come up with a take on Riddler that would slot neatly into BCC is a traveling magician/escapologist who draws in crowds by offering a cash prize to anyone who can explain his seemingly impossible escapes. He also plans his tours so he can find and pick off other big time magicians by putting them in death trap to see how good their escape skills really are.

And rounding out the dorks, the biggest idea I've had for Mad Hatter is a scientist with a method of inducing intense suggestibility (either the chipped cards or some form of drug) but can't find funding. Because of this, he makes his living as a taxidermist, which would allow both for some creepy visuals and (assuming they go down this route) a jabberwocky patched together out of various animals as a screwed up art piece

I've seen some people suggest Bane for season 2, but I think it would be more interesting to use one of the lesser used bruisers Batman has gone up against like Blockbuster (specifically the version from Nightwing comics), Amygdala or even Solomon Grundy, what with the supernatural aspects we've already seen.

If they do adapt Mr. Freeze, I know this will upset some people, but I want a less sympathetic version of Victor, purely because I'm sick of everything wanting to be Heart of Ice. Maybe he had his accident while trying to freeze Nora against her will, or maybe he causes out of exhaustion because he was neglecting to sleep.

And lastly, this show has the opportunity to be the first animated series to embrace the supernatural implications with The Ventriloquist. Scarface wouldn't even have to be fully alive, just a cursed dummy that amplifies negative emotions and might even be addictive in a way. You could have Batman and Wesker racing to find the dummy as it's being passed from person to person around Gotham.

I made the au post as a joke but it's genuinely taken over my brain as I realized a lot of common things with both series, which are both some of my fav.

The main soc au group would be Tsukishima, Koito, Inkarmat, Tanigaki, Vasily, and Ogata. They are a part of a larger gang which is the 7th with Tsurumi as their leader. They would get in a bunch of side quests probably but would still break into the Ice Court for Jurda Parem secrets. Instead they are finding Wilk though and Asirpa would be the Kuwei who has information everyone wants after their father is killed.

None of the characters are really directly correlates to the crows though

Koito is official leader of the crew, kinda Jespers comedy but also the crews spider

Tsukishima is the right hand man and advices a lot of leadership decisions with Koito, the least like a crow I feel since Igogusa would be his Inej but shes long gone when the story starts

Inkarmat is a heart render who is the Nina of the crew, does fortune readings

Tanigaki is the Matthias I'd say except he's not fjerdan, the big one plus knows how to traverse the wilderness

Vasily would be the group fjerdan bent on getting back at someone else on the crew. I'm not sure how fjerdans would treat snipers but I think he'd defect on his own to hunt down Ogata

Ogata is the marksman of course and I would relate him to Kaz but he's honestly so much worse, funnily enough they both lost their brothers in very different ways

Also Ienaga is a healer who's also learned some tailoring that runs a hotel and Edogai is a durast taxidermist that is given skins in exchange for helping the 7th

I have so many more thoughts on them so I'm probably gonna post about this more but I haven't read shadow and bone yet

What I would have done differently with the crows in season 2

This isn't supposed to like insult the screen writers, I still think they did a good job. It's just my personal opinion. I just liked that they kept them more mysterious before we got into the ice court heist. Also, spoilers for both the books and show.

I would have had the crows come back from Ravka and be arrested like they did (including the truck? scene) but like not for a real charge but simply because Dreesen pulled some strings so that Sturmhond could meet them (like he did in show canon) and then they'd be released. They could have kept the Durast reveal or make it more subtle. But when they got to the crow club Pekka made something with it like burn it down and make it look like an accident or own it now but not make it the Kaelish Prince just yet. So Kaz needs some allies fast so he goes to the Dregs, makes a partnership deal with Per Haskell and like Haskell is a looser and Kaz has some good money from Sturmhond. And Heleen would still be alive and when Brekker went to her to confront her about the club and how the hell she could let that happen she would just bitch her way out of it and Kaz would be forced to give her the last money he owes her for Inej or otherwise she'd give Pekka some information or shit like that. But because of the partnership Inejs indenture is partly owned by Haskell and he doesn't want to let her go because she's such a good spy. This pisses off both Inej and Kaz but they know this is about survival right now. Pekka kills the Stadwatch guy now that they're back in town and frames them.

First Wylan scene stays the same. Nina Inej scene stays the same, except she tells her her name and Inej just gives her a look but keeps quiet otherwise. Matthias scenes this season stay the same, they did him so right, RIP his cell mate. Kaz steals the DeKappel stays. The first wesper and team meet stays the same except well Inejs reaction to Ninas name. Kaz flashbacks stay the same and does the diner scene and the Kanej rooftop scene. Keep the taxidermist and the break-in into Van Poels office but let them fail to get the book. Pekka and his me don't see Nina's face. Keep the wesper carriage scenes.

The cemetry triggers Kaz scene is in this season because they hide at Black Veil due to the murder charge. I'd put a wesper break-in scene in a later season or in another location (I mean without Alby yet) and without Durast reveal also I that means the conversation about Alby back at Black Veil needs to be delayed too. Wylan talks to Kaz about how Alby can't help who his father is needs to be pushed for later too. Keep the tending the wounds scene (but change the dialouge about Inej's tell back to how it was in the books). Kaz beating up the Dregs is for a later season obviously. Keep Inej killing Morgens. Keep Helnik prison scene but Rollins doesn't recognize her just yet. Keep the Kanej scene where he tells her to leave if anything goes wrong. The whole fake plague plot is for a later season. Wesper Komedie Brute scene stays but they set up a different plan. Jes calling Kaz a brother is too early so I'd exchange that with "best friends fight".

Kaz would find another way to prove Pekka is the murderer and strip him of some of him money and connections and so on but not all of them and Pekka would end up in Hellgate. Kaz knew this wasn't going to stop him but it would buy them time. In Hellgate Pekka would rebuild his criminal empire in season 2b whilst the crows do the sword heist so he'd get out and be ready to try break in the ice court himself like in the books. The Matthias meeting him will also be as shown in the show.

At some point Jesper has to fuck up something because of his gambling addiction.

The wesper scene where they talk about their hook up stays. As well as them being hired by Ravka but I'd replace Zoya with Harshaw (who drags Oncat with him) and Fedyor. Jesper telling Inej and Nina removing the tattoo. Wylans dyslexia reveal must be limited to Jes the rest has to wait for the Jan Van Eck drama. The tea shop scene is perfection as well as Kaz' panic attac. The heist stays the same except for the wesper conversation about Jes being a Durast (instead fight about his addiction), he will only discuss this with Neyar who will encourage him but he will still hesitate. Also a bit of Kaz' hallucination will have to change (dialouge) and Jespers now being about his addiction and his guilt towards his father and him wanting to make it right.

They should hand over the blade to Alina because in her storyline she's the main character. They'd open the sealed gate with a bomb not Jespers powers and they'd find some other way to defeat the Tidemaker.

The how will you have me scene will be delayed because Inejs gotta stay with the Dregs. The Helnik scene at the end stays, they'll free him first thing next season. Kaz being a charity guy for the Menagerie girls is going to have to wait till the end of the ck plotline.

The season ends like it did with them being hired for the ice court heist but how that happend will be shown in flashbacks at the beinning of season 3.

PS: I tried to look up for stuff on the Grishaverse Wiki page that's about the differences between show and books but they didn't really update it yet so I had to rewatch the crow scenes (worth it) but boi do they have a task ahead of them when they want to list all the differences...

🚨🚨🚨SPOILERS🚨🚨🚨FOR SHADOW AND BONE SEASON TWO

first of all, *inhales*

I LOVED the newer storyline and think that it works really well with all the combinations. I ADORED the little references, scenes and locations throughout the show that were in the books, and the fact that they used the map from the books to move to different locations. the pekka rollins revenge was so much fun to watch, AND THE CROWS!!!! I love what they did with wesper even though we probably won’t get the accidental kiss, they’re relationship was so cute and adorable and it felt like watching a really good fanfic. INEJ OWNS MY HEART she could stab me and I would thank her, kaz was perfect and the LINE and the dream sequence was just chef’s kiss. and WYLAN VAN SUNSHINE MY BELOVED. AND THE ICE COURT HEIST IM SO EXCITED ALSO JESPER IN A SKIRT UNTIL TODAY I DID NOT NOW HOW MUCH I NEEDED THAT. Also nikolai, tamar and tolya were perfect. and all the foreshadowing with demon nikolai makes me want another season. and jesper accepting himself as grisha was just so incredible and i loved all the scenes we got of him using his powers

HOWEVER, by combining the storylines, a lot of it was rushed or removed or changed, David did not have to die, he could have survived maybe not until the end of the series, but he could have survived, also replacing him with alina in the triumvirate was not a good move, the triumvirate is supposed to represent all three grisha orders in order to have balance. Alina not losing her power and taking the throne just doesn’t sit right with me, losing her powers was meant to be huge part of alina’s growth and character and leaning her with them ( sort of) kind off cancels it out, also i’m kind of sad that we didn’t get white hair alina. the throne is supposed to be a part of Zoya’s character arc and i feel like giving alina that role takes that from zoya, also STOP BLOWING HOLES IN MY SHIPS, why Inej/tolya, WHY?!?!? i was really hoping for aroace tolya and was really disappointed at that hint with inej. also the ending, don’t get me wrong, i LOVE the idea of dark alina, but i fear that it will make the series move in circles, and start feeling repetitive. and replacing dunyasha with the taxidermist was not one of my favorites parts.

all in all, i’d say this was a solid 7/10
