Jalen shouts.

Jalen: You call that wading? I'm going deeper!

He starts walking further out with Koisuke following behind.

Koisuke says warily.

Koisuke: Maybe we should start heading back soon, the tide is coming in fast!

And he gets closer to you. Tromping ahead without a care, Jalen replies.

Jalen: Don't be such a scaredy cat. I wanna go out more!

Koisuke mutters under his breath.

Koisuke: This one's gonna get me in trouble someday.

Just then, you hear Jalen shouts from far down the beach.

Jalen: Last one at the other end of the beach is a rotten egg!

And he takes off running.

But Koisuke has other ideas. With lightning speed, he lunges at Jalen from behind, wrapping his arms around his waist and hoisting him up.

Jalen: Yah! Let me down you oaf!

Jalen is pounding his fists on Koisuke's broad shoulders as he struggles in vain.

Koisuke just laughs, his booming laugh and starts running through the waves with Jalen held high.

Koisuke: WheeEEEE look at me fly!

Jalen is screeching at the top of his lungs.

Jalen: Put me down right now or so help me God Koisuke!

You and Jae-Min are in hysterics, doubling over on the beach as you watch the scene unfold. Koisuke continues to bounce Jalen up and down, paying no mind to his threats.

Jalen: I'm gonna murder you, you overgrown monkey! Put me down NOW!

Jalen pummel Koisuke's shoulders with weak fists.

By now the whole beach is in hysterics watching the spectacle. You and Jae-Min are doubled over howling.

Koisuke pays them no mind, too amused by Jalen's indignant screeching.

Koisuke: Aww what's wrong baby, don't like the ride?

Jalen: I will end you; I swear to God!

Jalen is beet red with embarrassment.

After being relentlessly jostled, Jalen finally loses it. With a war cry, he launches himself out of Koisuke's arms straight into the water. When he resurfaces, Jalen's attempt at a murderous glare only makes Koisuke laugh harder.

But now you could see the devious grin on his face that means Koisuke was in for it...

It is a beach day you all will remember for a long time!

가볍게 착지하는 사람

- 그동안 어떻게 살아왔나요?  순간 ‘허들’이란 단어가 떠올랐어요. 구체적인 계획 없이 눈앞에 있는 허들을 넘으면서 살아왔으니까요. 돈이 ��요하면 일해서 돈을 벌었고, 여행 가고 싶으면 가진 예산 털어서 여행 다니고, 학교 다닐 때도 장학금 받을 정도로만 공부하고, 마음 따라 듣고 싶은 수업만 골라 들었어요. 소설, 시, 희곡, 언어학, 영화, 철학, 사진, 디자인 뭐 그런 거. 그래도 방황하던 시기에 학사경고 받은 학기 제외하곤 학비 안 내고 학교 다녔네요. 없는 형편에 운이 좋았죠. 사람이 평지만 달릴 수는 없잖아요. 거기 깔린 장애물이 허들이라고 치면, 높든 낮든 그걸 어떻게든 넘어보려고 발악했어요. 허들이 높으면 다리가 찢어져도, 걸려서 넘어져도 그냥 절뚝거리면서 앞만 봤어요. 다음에 넘어야 할 허들이 얼마나 더 있는지도 모르고 겁 없이 막 뛰었어요. 설렁설렁 걸은 적은 없어요. - 원래 작가가 되고 싶었나요? 어릴 때부터 글 쓰는 걸 좋아했어요. 그때는 일기 쓰면서 ‘아, 글로 내 하루를, 감정을 표현하는 게 참 재밌네. 나는 글쓰기에 흥미를 느끼는 사람이구나.’를 어렴풋이 인지했어요. 자연스레 작가가 되겠단 꿈을 키웠죠. 당근으로 당근즙만 만들지 않잖아요. 당근 주스도 만들고, 당근 볶음도 만들고, 당근 라페도 만들고. 글이라는 재료로도 소설, 시, 시나리오 등 다양한 요리를 만들 수 있겠죠. 드라마를 하는 요즘의 저는 대사나 씬으로 창작하길 원하고, 이 일로 돈을 벌고 싶어요. 근데 드라마가 너무 재밌으니까 죽을 때까지 계속해 보려고요. 서른이 되기 전까지는 최대한 다양한 경험을 해보고 싶어서 닥치는 대로 일했어요. 대학교 졸업하고는 논술학원에서 초등학생 가르치면서 개인 과외를 병행했고요. 한 번쯤은 해외에서 살아보고파서 호주 사는 이모 도움 받아 퍼스에서 1년 동안 지냈어요. 대학생 때 안 해본 거 없이 미친 듯이 알바해서 모은 돈이 딱 1,000만 원이었는데 그 돈 다 꼬라박아 어학원 다니고, 여행도 하고, 인생 공부했어요. 원래 교환학생 가고 싶었는데 집이 풍족하지 않았던 터라, 졸업한 후에야 겨우 해외 경험을 해봤죠.  그 뒤로 출판사랑 연이 닿아서 편집자로 1년 반 정도 일했어요. 글 다루는 일은 잘 맞았어요. 재밌기도 했고. 안정적인 직장인의 삶, 뿌듯했죠. 근데 남의 글만 만지다 보니 안정감이 주는 불안감을 크게 느껴서, 언제까지 ‘이 삶을 재미라는 이름으로 지속할 수 있을까?’라고 끊임없이 스스로 물어야 했어요. ‘하루하루가 재미없을 거야.’란 대답이 나왔고요. 어쨌든 20대 때 신조가 다양한 경험을 해보잔 거였으니 과감하게 회사를 그만뒀어요. 저는 제가 원치 않으면 그 순간부터 인생의 의미를 찾지 못하는 사람이라 과감히 때려치울 수 있었죠. 세상을 더 알고 싶어서 퇴사 후에 배낭여행을 가려 했어요. 차곡차곡 모은 돈으로 비행기 티켓을 예매했는데 코로나가 터진 거예요. 여행은 당연히 못 갔고, 마냥 빈둥대는 체질이 아니라 뭐라도 해야 했는데, 다음 허들이 뭔지 모르잖아요. 어느 방향으로 뛰어야 할지 모르니까. 퇴사 당일에 당근마켓을 보는데 누가 왕십리에 있는 소프트아이스크림 가게를 양도한다는 거예요. 그때 파주 살고 있었는데 그날 저녁에 왕십리까지 갔어요. 가서 그냥 한다고 했어요. 가게를 양도받고 6개월 동안 하루도 안 쉬고 매일 일했어요. 브랜딩, 로고 제작, 메뉴 개발, 판매, 세무까지 혼자 다 하려니 벅차더라고요. 죽는 줄 알았어요. - 아이스크림 가게를 하신 이유는 뭔가요?  궁금해서요. 그냥 사업이 한 번 해보고 싶었나 봐요. 그때까지만 해도 제 가게가 소프트아이스크림 계의 하겐다즈가 될 줄 알았는데. 생각이 없는 거죠. 울기도 많이 울었지만, 가장 단단해진 시기였어요. ‘역시 남 밑에 있는 게 짱’이란 깨달음을 얻기도 했고. 아이스크림 하나가 3,500원이었는데 하루에 2개 판 적도 있어요. 왕복 교통비가 5,000원인데 7,000원어치 팔고 근처에서 4,000원짜리 맥주 한 잔 마시고 퇴근. 완전 마이너스 생활. 거진 매일 엉엉 울면서 집 가고 다음 날 출근하고. 6개월간 이 짓을 반복하니 도저히 안 되겠더라고요. 세금이랑 수수료 다 떼고 한 달에 200만 원쯤 벌었는데 이 상태로 가게를 양도하면 아무도 살 사람이 없겠다 싶어서 기계만 팔고 사업을 접었어요. 빚더미 안 오른 걸 감사하게 여겨야죠. - 작가로서 한 우물을 파지 않았다는 불안감은 없었나요?  네. 다른 일을 하면서도 꾸준히 써왔으니까요. 물론 한 우물을 파는 것도 중요한데, 모름지기 다양한 경험을 가진 작가가 탁월한 글을 쓸 수 있다고 믿어서요. 근데 이제 서른 넘었으니 한 우물 파야죠. 그동안 너무 생각 없이 막 달려서. 그래도 20대 때 많이 배웠어요. 사람도 배우고, 내 미천함도 배우고, 이제 정신 차려야죠. 서른 전처럼 살면 안 되죠. - 지금 어떻게 살고 있나요? 건강하게 살고 있어요. 잠들고 일어나는 시간, 운동하는 시간, 식사 시간, 글 쓰는 시간, 공부하는 시간 정해서 루틴 잡아놓고 따르려고 노력해요. 저 알코올 중독이었어요. 술 안 마시면 잠을 못 잘 정도로. 물보다 술을 더 많이 마시다 보니 점점 몸이 거대해지는 거예요. 이렇게 살다 간 글도 못 쓰고 죽겠다 싶어서 술 줄이고 운동 시작했어요. 건강하게 글 쓰다 생 마감하는 게 지금의 목표예요. 건강한 마음으로 글을 써야 성취가 따라온다고 생각해요. 오래 걸리는 일이란 걸 알아서 서두르지 않으려고요. 무엇보다 내가 내 글을 알아주는 게 제일 중요한데, 그러려면 내가 나로 바로 서야 하잖아요. 단단한 심지로 꾸준히 창작하려면 체력이 중요하니 부단히 움직이고 부단히 쓰려 노력 중이에요. 제가 먼저 즐겁게 작업하고, 남들이 재밌게 봐주는 삶을 살면 더할 나위 없을 텐데. 그러려면 한 10년은 걸리지 않을까요. 더 걸리려나? (웃음) - 앞으로 어떻게 살고 싶나요? 쓰면서 살고 싶어요. 명확한 목표를 둬야겠단 생각은 해요. 현실에 발붙이지 않고 둥둥 떠다니는 이상주의자 같아서요. 삶의 궤적을 살펴봤을 때, 다른 사람들이 보기에는 철이 없다고 느껴질 만한 선택을 많이 했으니까. 사실 돈도 중요하고 경력도 중요하고 어떤 직업으로 밥벌이할지도 중요하잖아요. 그런 고민을 하나씩 꺼내서 실천해야 하는 시기라고 생각해요. 5년 안에 단막극 하나 완성해서 내 이름으로 데뷔하기, 그리고 글로 번 돈으로 집 대출 열심히 갚는 게 다음으로 넘어야 할 허들이네요. 아, 너무 높다! - 이문재 시인은 “가장 이루어져야 할 기도는 오래된 기도”라고 말했어요. 윤슬 님에게도 오래된 기도가 있나요? 저는 저와 한 번이라도 스쳤던 사람들이 행복하길 바라요. 근데 그 전제는 ‘나부터 행복해야 한다.’는 거겠죠. 제가 불안정한 상태면 이 부정적인 기운을 타인에게 전가할 테니까. 물론 마음이 건강한 사람은 부정한 기운을 걸러서 좋은 것만 받아들이겠지만, 우울은 쉽게 옮잖아요. 주변인들의 행복을 바라는 오래된 기도로, 적어도 제 바운더리에 있는 사람들 만큼은 행복했으면 해요. 다른 사람들의 선한 기도도 전부 그러모아서 행복을 이루는 교집합이 많아졌으면 좋겠어요. 행복이 막 오가는 교집합이 많아지면 언젠가 합집합이 되어서 세상이 행복으로 다 채워지지 않을까? 그게 저의 오래된 기도네요. 싸우는 거 너무 힘들고, 화내기도 귀찮고, 서로 사랑하기도 벅찬데. 그냥 다 둥글둥글한 평화로운 세상이 오기를 기도해요.

오는 7월 7일 오후 9시부터 니혼TV 계열에서 방송되는 영화 '바람계곡의 나우시카'. 원작은 미야자키 하야오 감독이 1982년부터 도쿠마 서점 잡지 '애니메이주'에서 연재한 만화지만 84년 영화 개봉 후에도 약 10년간 이어져 영화판과 전혀 다른 전개와 깊이를 지닌 작품이 됐다.스튜디오 지브리의 스즈키 토시오 프로듀서가 밝힌 '나우시카' 뒷이야기를 일부 소개한다.

무렵, 도쿠마 서점 그룹내에서는 영상 기획을 필요로 하고 있었다.나는 미야씨에게 「사실은 그림책보다 애니메이션이 좋지 않을까요」라고 설득해, 그가 영화를 위해 쌓아두고 있던 그림을 정리해 기획 회의에 가져갔다.그런데 영화밭 사람들은 '원작도 없이 갑자기 오리지널 기획으로 애니메이션을 만든다는 게 말이 안 된다'고 극렬히 반대. 그래서 '그럼 원작 만화를 만들어버리자'는 얘기가 되더라고요.

　미야씨는 「가족을 부양하지 않으면 안 된다.한 장에 얼마를 받느냐고 노골적으로 물어왔다.저는 어쩔 수 없기 때문에 그 자리에서 「1장에 1만엔」이라고 결정했습니다만, 그러면 그는 「단돈 1만엔인가!」라고 충격을 받아 버려서….그래도 '이걸로 먹고 살 수 있을까'라고 투덜거리며 그리기 시작해 주셨어요.

　나우시카'를 만들면서 미야씨와 이야기한 것은 '신제국 이야기' 같은 작품으로 만들고 싶다는 것이었습니다.52년부터 60년에 걸쳐 방영되어 폭발적인 인기를 얻은 NHK 라디오 드라마의 사극입니다.'나우시카'라고 하면 '인간과 자연의 관계'라든가 여러모로 진지하게 논의되고 있는데, 미야상은 소년소녀를 위한 '통쾌 오락 그림 이야기'를 그리려고 했거든요! 저도 그런 걸 좋아해서 둘이서 타고 다녔어요(웃음). 그리스 신화도 참고했죠.

　연재 중에는 계속, 나우시카가 본 것을 중심으로 이야기해 가기 때문에, 전체상을 좀처럼 알 수 없다.하지만 단행본으로 말하면 전7권 중 제6권이 끝날 무렵 거신병이 부활해 나우시카를 엄마라고 부르기 시작할 때부터 극적으로 시점이 바뀌어 나우시카를 부감적, 객관적으로 그리게 된다.이 변화가 나에게는 타가메 겐고로 만화 보는곳 모음 번역 형편없이 재미있었다.

땅고와 사기종인(舍己從人)

1993년 개봉한 이연걸 주연 영화 '태극권(원제는 태극장삼풍)'을 시청하면서 '���런 게 진짜 되나?' 반신반의하면서도 '되기만 하면 대박인데'란 생각도 들어 계속 관심을 두고 있다가, 2000년 초 이직한 사무실 근처에서 태극권 도장 발견. 매월 돈 내고 1년 쯤 다녀보니 이른바 유능제강(柔能制剛) 원리로 상대를 제압한다는 게 꿈에서나 가능한 허풍임을 알았다. 그럼에도 2년 더 다녀 꼬박 3년을 채움. 이유는 몸공부 수단으로선 장점이 굉장히 많다는 걸 알아, 최대한 의문점을 남김없이 해결하고 나오느라 좀 더 시간을 보내야 했다는... 이후 홀로 수련을 계속해 여기까지 온 거니까 어느새 짬밥을 20년 넘겼네. (쓸데없이 나이만 처먹은...) 태극권 이론서 역시 손에 잡힌 것마다 적어도 3번씩은 읽은 듯. 역시 영화 못잖게 환상적이라 이대로만 되면 그야말로 천하무적이지만 (이미 유튜브에서 다 까발려졌듯) 진짜 말도 안되는 개구라 일색이었음을 안 후엔 더 이상 꺼내 읽지 않았다.

이런 사연으로 나는 무슨 운동을 시작하든, 처음엔 선생이 시키는 대로 따라하지만 시간이 흘러 동작이 익숙해지면 무의식적으로 태극권과의 접목을 고민하기 시작한다. 뭣보다 이 수련을 통해 쌓은 20년짜리 내공을 포기할 수 없기 때문일 듯. 이것이 나의 강점이자 한계라고 봄. 태극권 몸공부의 핵심은 도자 도덕경 10장에 나오는 '전기치유(傳氣致柔)'라는 것으로 부드러움의 극치를 추구한다. 다시 말해 털끝 만큼의 경직조차 없는 최대 이완을 체험하고자 하는 몸부림 같은 것이다. 당연히 땅고를 추면서도 내가 도달한 이완을 적용하기 위해 무수한 시행착오를 반복... 몸치인 탓에 몇 년을 계속 버벅대다 작년 가을~겨울 무렵에 드디어 굳게 닫혀 있던 문을 열쇠로 딸깍 따고 들어간 거 같은 느낌이 들더니만 비로소 아브라쏘가 편해지기 시작.

통로가 한 번 열리고 나니 새로운 숙제가 우후죽순 나타났다. 가장 고무적인 변화는 오랫동안 잊고 있던 태극권 이론들을 재인식하기 시작했단 거. 무술, 땅고 모두 상대의 무게중심을 찾을 수 있어야 한다는 점은 동일하나 무술은 상대 중심을 빼앗거나 흐트러뜨리기 위해서인 반면, 땅고에선 서로 합(合)을 맞추기 위해서란 점이 결정적으로 다르다. 이 차이로 인해 격투기에선 도무지 불가능하다고 판단해 쓰레기통에 처박았던 것들이 땅고에선 가능할 뿐만 아니라, 더 깊은 단계로 진입하는 길잡이가 될 수 있단 걸 앎.

'사기종인(舍己從人)'이란 말이 있다. "자기를 버리고(=舍己) 남을 좇는다(=從人)"는 의미. 태극권 책에서 처음 봐 무술 용어인 줄 알았는데, 서경에 나온다고 한다. 태극권에선 '상대의 격투 스타일에 따라 카멜레온처럼 자유자재로 변화하는 환상적인 기법'으로 설명해 놨다. 유감스럽지만 이 역시 비현실적인 탁상공론이다. 이게 가능하면 종합격투기 시합에 출전해 연전연승하며 돈을 쓸어 담았겠지?

격투기에선 안 되지만 땅고에서라면? '상대의 춤 스타일에 따라 카멜레온처럼 자유자재로 변화'하는 몸공부로 바꿔 생각할 수 있다. 간혹 땅고판에서 상대의 단점을 찾아내 지적하는 걸 자칭 '매의 눈' 운운 자랑스레 여기는 부류가 있는 거 같다. 하지만 여기에서 끝나면 남탓이나 하는 한심한 인간일 뿐. 상대의 습관을 파악한 뒤 내 깜냥껏 최대한 합을 맞추려는 노력이 수반돼야 하고, 그래야 밀롱가에서 어떤 상대를 만나더라도 재밌게 놀 수 있겠지. 물론 해도해도 안되는 경우가 있긴 하지만, 사기종인에 접근할수록 이런 좋지 않은 사례 또한 점점 줄어들 건 분명하다.

사기종인은 도덕경 8장 '상선약수(上善若水)'편에 나오는 "가장 좋은 것은 물과 같다. 온갖 것을 이롭게 하지만 다투지 않는다"는 문장과 통한다. 전신을 이완하는 수련을 매일 반복함으로써 (물과 같은 마음을) 획득한 결과일 뿐, "자기를 버리고 남을 좇는" 연습을 '뇌'로 해선 얻어지지 않는다는 역설이 있다. 그래서 평소엔 태극권을 통해 어제보다 오늘, 더 많이 이완하고자 연습하고 밀롱가에서 땅고 추는 동안엔 사기종인을 더 깊이 깨닫는 거로 전략을 세워 행하는 중임.

Smeraldo: A smeraldo virág visszatérő jelenség a BTS történetében. Olaszul smaragdot jelent, a virágnyelven pedig annyit tesz: az igazság, amit nem tudtam elmondani. A 15-16. századra nyúlik vissza a La Città di Smeraldo története: Észak-Olaszországban La Città di Smeraldo kastélyában élt egy férfi, aki nagyon csúnya volt, egyedül élt a világtól elzárkózva – a történet egyes változatai szerint folyton maszkot viselt, hogy elrejtse az arcát. A születése után és a nevelkedése alatt folyamatos gyűlöletnek és kritikának volt kitéve, ezért ha valaki a közelébe próbált menni, dühös lett és elbújt. Az egyetlen örömöt az életében a kertjében növekedő virágok jelentették. Egy nap azonban egy nő jelent meg a kertjében és lopott a virágaiból, majd nap nap után visszatért. A férfi kezdetben az ablakból figyelte őt, végül egy nap úgy döntött, követi, hogy kiderítse miért viszi el a virágokat. Hamarosan felfedezte, hogy a nő a virágokat árulja a megélhetésért. A férfi elhatározta, hogy olyan virágokat fog nevelni, amilyenekhez fogható nem létezik a földön, hogy a nő minél magasabb árat kérhessen értük. Számtalan kudarc után a férfi létre is hozta a virágot, ám a nő nem jött többé. A férfi hetekkel, talán hónapokkal később tudta csak meg, hogy a nő, aki ellopta a virágokat és a szívét is, meghalt. ↩︎

Harmónia: Harmónia; egyidejűleg megszólaló zenei hangok együttese, és törvényszerűségeinek összessége. A harmónia az akkordnál általánosabb fogalom; minden harmóniához több akkord tartozik. Az akkord konkrét hangokat határoz meg, míg a harmónia az akkord egy tulajdonsága. Mivel egy akkord három vagy több különböző hangból áll, ezért meghatározható, hogy milyen harmóniához tartozik. A harmónia -a dallammal szemben- az egyidejűségre, a hangok térbeliségére vonatkozó vertikális paraméter. A 반대로 fade away sort a legtöbb angol fordításban úgy olvashatjátok, hogy “fade away to the other side” vagy “fade away in reverse“, elhalványul/áttűnik a másik oldalra – ami volt, elmúlt, ami mögöttünk van ködbe vész/eltűnik jelentéssel bírnak lényegében a kontextust tekintve, így más magyar fordításokban ennek valamely verzióját lehet olvasni. A 반대 egyébként ellentétet jelent, 반대로 jelentése: másik út, ellenkezőleg, fordított/ellenkező irány, oldal. Régen a kazettáknak volt A és B oldala, és ha az egyik végére értünk, meg kellett fordítani, kvázi újra kezdeni, “átváltani a másik oldalra”  –> amikor véget ért, jött az ellenkező oldal, ahogy ha egy nap véget ér, az is átvált egy újba; valamint az albumokon is szoktak szerepelni ún. B-side dalok, emiatt is gondoltam úgy, hogy ez a fordítás azért elfogadhatóan visszaadja a sor lényegét. ↩︎

Amikor a neveden szólítalak, te csak borulj virágba nekem“: Kikacsintásként értelmezhető Jimin Serendipity c. dalának egy részletére: “Amikor szólítottál, a virágodként, mintha csak erre vártam volna, veled fájdalmasan virágba borultam.” (ez egyelőre csak egy gyors nyersfordítás) Ez egyben utalás Kim Choon-soo A virág című híres versére is. A lényege röviden összefoglalva: a létezésünkhöz elengedhetetlen, hogy legyen nevünk. Ez az elképzelés megjelenik az 134340 dalszövegében is. ↩︎

Ez csak egy fun fact a fordítási folyamatról: sokat gondolkodtam rajta, hogy a dal címéhez kapcsolódva “Összetrombitáltam egy bandát” fordítás működne-e, hiszen a címben jelölt zenekar jellegéből kifolyólag passzolna.  ↩︎

A dalszöveg akár azt a fordítás is megengedné: csak téged, visszautalva arra, hogy régóta keresem a szerelmet –> téged. ↩︎
