Okay fuck it yeah I'm making the post idc abt backlash. First of all the hidden agenda fandom doesn't exist anymore so whos even gonna have an issue. But if you do feel called out um. Maybe thats ur problem idk bc I'm not aiming at anyone in particular here.

Anyway long ass ramble abt the tiny dead Hidden Agenda fandom below the cut

This is mainly something I noticed looking through the very limited amount of Hidden Agenda fics on ao3, but it's VERY obvious on there. The vast majority of fics on there are centered on Adam and Finn, which I can understand more since they have an interesting backstory and are well written characters, sure. But then you look at the others and the other characters that are centered are... Riggs and Calvary?

In the actual game ofc Becky and Felicity are the main characters. Both of them not only are pretty objectively interesting characters on their own, and even more so together. On top of this they have the most shipping potential of any two characters in that game, it's literally basically canon, it's not even subtext atp it's literally just text. NO other two characters have that amount of chemistry in the game, and yet there is a noticeable lack of gravey fics in that tag. And I'll stress again bc I know how defensive people got last time I made this kind of observation, I'm not pointing fingers or calling anyone misogynistic/racist/homophobic BUT. but. When the two mcs are women, one of which is poc, and they're implied to be lesbians, and they get sidelined by the fandom despite being the focuses of the game... it's kinda hard not to assume there's some kind of bias there.

And on another point, it's similar when it comes to supporting characters too. In a way I'm disappointed but absolutely not surprised that Adam/Finn is prioritized in fan works over Becky/Felicity, but when characters like Riggs and Calvary are also given more attention than them it becomes way more suspicious to me. Riggs is a fine character, I like him enough and I can see why others might like him more, but wbk he doesn't really have all that much relevance. Calvary is even more confusing bc he basically JUST exists to be a creepy misogynistic asshole and as unlikeable as possible. Thankfully I haven't seen him getting a lot of attention but the fact that I've seen him getting any that isn't entirely negative is... hm...

Now there ARE in fact male characters that can be both relevant and likeable: Tom and Karl. (I talk shit abt Karl bc it's a joke I started with friends, I'm gonna drop that for this post obv bc we're being fr here) these two are pretty obviously more relevant than Riggs or Calvary, they're literally Becky's partners (Tom can even replace Riggs' entire role lmao, and if he's replaced himself it's by Karl) and I'd say they're also both likeable characters on their own too. And yet I'm pretty sure I found maybe one??? fic with them in it? Probably should have mentioned this earlier but yeah, they're both poc.

So like... I feel like it all comes down to what Becky/Felicity/Tom/Karl have in common and then what Adam/Finn/Riggs/Calvary have in common. It strikes me as questionable. But like maybe I'm just an annoying snowflake though idk🤷‍♀️ /s

This turned into more of a ramble than anything and I'm aware i'm also yelling into a void bc I'm posting entirely for a dead fandom that barely existed to begin with, but tbh this stuff applies to most if not all larger fandoms as well, i'm just looking at it from what I've seen in the remnants of the HA fandom. as the convo would begin to slow and the EYE CONTACT RAHHHH and basicuhly shes just staring at her lap but then her eyes drift to aces and js decide to point out his hands like "your hands are so big" and ace is a lil caught off guard but atp used to her random findings and hes like "nah yours are just small" and he holds them up for her to see, and she presses her WAYYY smaller hands against his and the size difference is stark but it feels so.. perfect! and they tease each other about it but in reality they like how it feels.. like ace's rough yet warm hands and the readers soft yet cold hands (cuz im iron deficient)

AND THEN SLOWLY THEY INTERTWINE FINGERS AND YK MAYBE THEY WERE THINKIN IT WOULDNT FIT BUT IT DID. their fingers lock perfectly! ace is liek "..pretty nice fit, huh?" and the readers like "yeah.." and for a moment they just stare at their hands, and the reader can feel the warmth from aces hands seeping into her cold ones.. and then their eyes meet.

AND THNE BLA BLA BLA THEY REALIZE THEYRE PERFECT FOR EACH OTHER AND THEY HAVE THEIR FIRST KISS SORRY IF THIS WAS CRINGE OR IF IM BAD AT EXPLAINING I JS .. THINK THIS IS REALLY CUTE !! TY IF U WRITE THIS IN ADVANCE!

Mama cat!joyce finding puppy!reader who’s living on the streets, and immediately becomes super protective over them. She wraps them up in her arms, and her tail, once they’re at home. Instincts going crazy because who could just let you stay out there alone like that??!?!?!!! She’s desperately trying to bathe your furry ears, nearly hissing at Hopper when he tries to pull you away from her to ask you a couple of questions. And your tail is very steady while you’re cocooned in her, just watching her. She’s made Hopper bring over snacks and water and she’s feeding them to you, while you’re still in her arms. You try to crawl off the couch to say hi to Johnathon who’s walked into the room, but Joyce literally drags you back, wrapping you safely in her arms and with her tail again. But as your sweet baby eyes just look up at her, watching her nuzzle you, she feels her heart burst, and knows she has to look after you. Especially when your tail stops, and your eyes start dropping, and you give a big sweet puppy yawn as you start to drift off in her embrace. Then she’s really staring at anyone who dares wake you with her disapproving look.

When you wake up you’re at least in a bed, still with Joyce wrapped around you. And she apologises for being so instinct driven yesterday, even when reader is already burying themselves closer into her chest, licking sleepily under her chin and wanting to stay with Joyce. But she’s at least calm enough now to ask more than your name, and realises drawing you a bath is probably much better than just lapping at your adorable ears. So she does so while making a massive breakfast for you, determined to know how best to keep you safe now, including if that’s her unofficially adopting you like she does with half of Hawkins older kids population

if you fall asleep in her arms she's losing it. she knows that you're not technically her baby and you're not even technically a baby, but now you're her baby and you're asleep in her arms so there :] she might need hopper's help to carry you to bed, but she can't possibly leave you there alone, because what if you're scared when you wake up alone in an unfamiliar room? she lets you snuggle up to her all night, combing through your hair and nuzzling into your ears and rubbing your back while you snooze in her embrace

yeah, i think there’s a few things to address that they sort of allude to; what’s maybe the most pertinent question that no one seems to be asking in relation to ‘was there a body double for that specific scene’ (since i’ve now come across that turning up in two reviews); is, why cast jude law in a fat suit, and (possibly) a body double for his sex scenes, rather than...an actor whose body type is similar to henry viii’s in the 1540s? by the end of his life he was around 28 stone. casting/directors often hem and haw when presented with this question (i mean, i have yet to see anyone even ask it of him, unfortunately since the 2010s sycophancy and soft-ball questions seem to have become more the standard re: interviews); insisting there simply aren’t so many actors to choose from, which is ofc ridiculous, as there are certainly many in theatre and opera. 

frankly, unless you have scenes of that character in flashback and want them to be of the same face, different body type (and that’s affording benefit of the doubt), there’s very little in the way of credibly legitimate reasons to cast a thin actor to wear a fat suit. even that’s generous, because usually productions will just cast another actor to play a younger version of the character that resembles the original. 

and no, it wouldn’t have been such a shock to her; moreover there’s not really much by contemporary report to even suggest henry was considered ‘ugly’ in 1543 (i would liken this to modern celebrity culture...royals had access to the best in the way of clothes and medical care; probably some celebrities nowadays would similarly seem/appear more ‘average’, or more their age, without all their bells and whistles). there was reginald pole, and he might have heard it from others, but he had been gone from england for years by that point. those that wanted him dead or usurped would mention the injury to his leg in hopes it would hasten his death; but there wasn’t that visceral disgust and when there was (this is 1530s, but ‘better he would be buried in his swaddling clothes’) it doesn’t refer to his appearance or weight. there’s less contemporary praise of his appearance in the 1530s than there was in the 1520s and 1510s, but since there’s not much in the way of denigration, either, the context would suggest this can be more attributed to the schism, and earlier than that, as being from opponents of the great matter, as this was the last, caveated praise of henry (1531):

i would never go so far as to suggest 16c contemporaries were more ‘enlightened’ when it came to judging physical appearance, or weight (contemporary remarks about coa’s weight gain, for example, are pretty brutal and cruel), but there are suggestions that weight in particular wasn’t necessarily judged in ways that are compatible with modern judgements. chapuys made the bizarre remark that katherine howard, during her imprisonment, was “fatter and more beautiful than ever”, but this would suggest that the two were not necessarily considered mutually exclusive in contemporary opinion. de marillac referred to henry as “very stout and daily growing heavier, much resembling his maternal grandfather, king edward,” but edward iv was considered handsome by contemporaries. in 1543 (while kparr was queen), the secretary to the duke of najera, despite critcizing henry’s ‘false opinions’ of religion, referred to him as “a man of great authority and beauty”.

i’ve also unfortunately come across many reviews mentioning that this is a visceral portrayal of henry’s ‘gluttony’, and yet, as glenn richardson has pointed out, “there is only one specific reference to henry eating too much in all of the more than 20 volumes of the letters and papers of his reign.”

It’s a watchable piece of faux history, but the movie does not know what to do with its own heroine, content to leave her to the clutches of its villain: Henry.

yeah, i don’t think i’m going to be a fan of this one.

Plus, Louis is a sucker for Harry painting his nails — when he’d noticed Harry painted them a few weeks ago for the first time, Louis’ jaw had dropped and he immediately picked up Harry’s hand, gently running his thumb along the nail beds. When he’d looked back up into Harry’s eyes, Louis’ were noticeably darkened and his eyelids were hooded. The rest of the day, whenever he’d noticed Harry about to start a task that might ruin his nails, he’d intervene to help. Harry’s nails were definitely dry at this point and if they chipped, he could’ve always just redone them that night, but it was cute to see Louis care so much and it was lovely to be taken care of by him.
