Okay fuck it yeah I'm making the post idc abt backlash. First of all the hidden agenda fandom doesn't exist anymore so whos even gonna have an issue. But if you do feel called out um. Maybe thats ur problem idk bc I'm not aiming at anyone in particular here.

Anyway long ass ramble abt the tiny dead Hidden Agenda fandom below the cut

This is mainly something I noticed looking through the very limited amount of Hidden Agenda fics on ao3, but it's VERY obvious on there. The vast majority of fics on there are centered on Adam and Finn, which I can understand more since they have an interesting backstory and are well written characters, sure. But then you look at the others and the other characters that are centered are... Riggs and Calvary?

In the actual game ofc Becky and Felicity are the main characters. Both of them not only are pretty objectively interesting characters on their own, and even more so together. On top of this they have the most shipping potential of any two characters in that game, it's literally basically canon, it's not even subtext atp it's literally just text. NO other two characters have that amount of chemistry in the game, and yet there is a noticeable lack of gravey fics in that tag. And I'll stress again bc I know how defensive people got last time I made this kind of observation, I'm not pointing fingers or calling anyone misogynistic/racist/homophobic BUT. but. When the two mcs are women, one of which is poc, and they're implied to be lesbians, and they get sidelined by the fandom despite being the focuses of the game... it's kinda hard not to assume there's some kind of bias there.

And on another point, it's similar when it comes to supporting characters too. In a way I'm disappointed but absolutely not surprised that Adam/Finn is prioritized in fan works over Becky/Felicity, but when characters like Riggs and Calvary are also given more attention than them it becomes way more suspicious to me. Riggs is a fine character, I like him enough and I can see why others might like him more, but wbk he doesn't really have all that much relevance. Calvary is even more confusing bc he basically JUST exists to be a creepy misogynistic asshole and as unlikeable as possible. Thankfully I haven't seen him getting a lot of attention but the fact that I've seen him getting any that isn't entirely negative is... hm...

Now there ARE in fact male characters that can be both relevant and likeable: Tom and Karl. (I talk shit abt Karl bc it's a joke I started with friends, I'm gonna drop that for this post obv bc we're being fr here) these two are pretty obviously more relevant than Riggs or Calvary, they're literally Becky's partners (Tom can even replace Riggs' entire role lmao, and if he's replaced himself it's by Karl) and I'd say they're also both likeable characters on their own too. And yet I'm pretty sure I found maybe one??? fic with them in it? Probably should have mentioned this earlier but yeah, they're both poc.

So like... I feel like it all comes down to what Becky/Felicity/Tom/Karl have in common and then what Adam/Finn/Riggs/Calvary have in common. It strikes me as questionable. But like maybe I'm just an annoying snowflake though idk🤷‍♀️ /s

This turned into more of a ramble than anything and I'm aware i'm also yelling into a void bc I'm posting entirely for a dead fandom that barely existed to begin with, but tbh this stuff applies to most if not all larger fandoms as well, i'm just looking at it from what I've seen in the remnants of the HA fandom. Again I am not attacking anyone here, I am making observations. If you're like mad or something I'm just gonna assume you didn't even read the whole post. Yes ur allowed to like characters, but I am also allowed to address what I've noticed about what characters seem to be more liked than others.

one night, in the crow's nest, ace and the reader would be next to each other, ace making her laugh her ass off as always and ace is so like SO in love wit her like as she laughs and holds onto her sides he just stares at her with that stupid grin

as the convo would begin to slow and the EYE CONTACT RAHHHH and basicuhly shes just staring at her lap but then her eyes drift to aces and js decide to point out his hands like "your hands are so big" and ace is a lil caught off guard but atp used to her random findings and hes like "nah yours are just small" and he holds them up for her to see, and she presses her WAYYY smaller hands against his and the size difference is stark but it feels so.. perfect! and they tease each other about it but in reality they like how it feels.. like ace's rough yet warm hands and the readers soft yet cold hands (cuz im iron deficient)

AND THEN SLOWLY THEY INTERTWINE FINGERS AND YK MAYBE THEY WERE THINKIN IT WOULDNT FIT BUT IT DID. their fingers lock perfectly! ace is liek "..pretty nice fit, huh?" and the readers like "yeah.." and for a moment they just stare at their hands, and the reader can feel the warmth from aces hands seeping into her cold ones.. and then their eyes meet.

AND THNE BLA BLA BLA THEY REALIZE THEYRE PERFECT FOR EACH OTHER AND THEY HAVE THEIR FIRST KISS SORRY IF THIS WAS CRINGE OR IF IM BAD AT EXPLAINING I JS .. THINK THIS IS REALLY CUTE !! TY IF U WRITE THIS IN ADVANCE!

Mama cat!joyce finding puppy!reader who’s living on the streets, and immediately becomes super protective over them. She wraps them up in her arms, and her tail, once they’re at home. Instincts going crazy because who could just let you stay out there alone like that??!?!?!!! She’s desperately trying to bathe your furry ears, nearly hissing at Hopper when he tries to pull you away from her to ask you a couple of questions. And your tail is very steady while you’re cocooned in her, just watching her. She’s made Hopper bring over snacks and water and she’s feeding them to you, while you’re still in her arms. You try to crawl off the couch to say hi to Johnathon who’s walked into the room, but Joyce literally drags you back, wrapping you safely in her arms and with her tail again. But as your sweet baby eyes just look up at her, watching her nuzzle you, she feels her heart burst, and knows she has to look after you. Especially when your tail stops, and your eyes start dropping, and you give a big sweet puppy yawn as you start to drift off in her embrace. Then she’s really staring at anyone who dares wake you with her disapproving look.

When you wake up you’re at least in a bed, still with Joyce wrapped around you. And she apologises for being so instinct driven yesterday, even when reader is already burying themselves closer into her chest, licking sleepily under her chin and wanting to stay with Joyce. But she’s at least calm enough now to ask more than your name, and realises drawing you a bath is probably much better than just lapping at your adorable ears. So she does so while making a massive breakfast for you, determined to know how best to keep you safe now, including if that’s her unofficially adopting you like she does with half of Hawkins older kids population

atp jonathan's probably used to joyce running around as the town's abused teen vigilante, giving all of the people who need it a home until they don't anymore. so he's probably chill about it, and by logic he'd be a cat hybrid too, so he's happy to have another hybrid in the house, even if his mom won't let go of you just yet. you probably become great friends!

if you fall asleep in her arms she's losing it. she knows that you're not technically her baby and you're not even technically a baby, but now you're her baby and you're asleep in her arms so there :] she might need hopper's help to carry you to bed, but she can't possibly leave you there alone, because what if you're scared when you wake up alone in an unfamiliar room? she lets you snuggle up to her all night, combing through your hair and nuzzling into your ears and rubbing your back while you snooze in her embrace

she definitely spoils you in the morning, and jon is more than happy to steal parts of the breakfast she's making before she's even finished with it, chiming in and chatting with you while you clean up and get dressed in one of his old shirts and a pair of joyce's pajama pants in the bathroom. and when you come out all fresh and clean and taken care of it's a big family breakfast, one that leaves you so so happy to be included as part of a family :')

last read: severance by ling ma & the new me by halle butler

so i was going to just include severance here but i was rly curious where the new me would go & i literally just finished it & liked it a lot!!!

both books deal with blithe, depressed & passionless protagonists stuck in the never-ending loop of what it means to exist in late stage capitalism which despite all evidence of it in the real world, i apparently also seek out in fiction to reassure me i'm not broken to feel that way too?

severance is amazing & i highly recommend it altho fair bit of content warning for an eerily prescient pandemic plot down to the ghoulish response of governments & businesses. (seriously, it was released in 2018 & if i was ling ma, i'd be buying lottery tickets every single day since march 12 2020). it also does a masterful job of depicting the immigrant experience abroad, especially if you're going thru it alone & without a large support network. the protagonist is also a chinese woman & her relation to her race is also a significant theme that's tied up in the overall arc of the novel, making you realize the title works on several levels: severance from your culture, from your family, from happiness, from humanity. is there nothing capitalism can't take from you?

the new me is a bit more condensed and focused on the inner machinations of a lonely depressed woman who can't seem to hold down a permanent job surrounded by vapid self-interested people & slowly becoming more like them (if not already). it's highly reminiscent of my year of rest and relaxation but i found the descriptors of the banality & pointlessness of office life poignant since it singled out how stupid all of it is. i also appreciated the glimpses of the minds of random side characters who the MC often judges but the author shows us they're as frail & human & pathetically hopeful just like she is, like we all are. while it might not be as layered as severance is, the claustrophobic feeling it gave me & the portrayal of bullshit jobs in late stage capitalism & the way it punishes weakness, vulnerability, and authenticity was painfully familiar. i wish i could give it to my therapist to understand my perspective but she'd probably tell me stop reading shit like this & taking it as truth

i'm gonna be real with you chief (didion), carrie fisher did this better. this is my first time reading fiction by didion & the year of magical thinking was truly a cathartic read for me but this ain't it. it's a story about a failing actress who's divorcing from this director that made her famous & they have a sick kid & she drinks & hangs out with other rich people & she's not even funny. idk, maybe it's just not resonating with me at this point of my life but i doubt i will be a famous actress at any point & i'm not aiming to be an alcoholic mother so. it's a pity that the things i liked in the year of magical thinking, like the direct prose & complex human relationships, just fall flat here. i guess knowing the things in the year of magical thinking were real made them seem that much more impactful (as much as i hate that). i still have half of it left so i'll finish it but atp i'm not even curious what happens

i just started imagining the balkans so i can't say much abt it except that it's dense and very philosophical which makes sense ig lol. until now she's brought up several arguments i've kind of realized myself but it's nice to have the theory and historical research behind them presented. otherwise, how could i know some random american dude joined one of the sections of the macedonian liberation movement in the 1900s simply because he was bored at home & looking for mystery & intrigue?

Harry will let him think whatever he wants as long as he gets to see Louis’ bicep muscles flexing. Not only does the sight make Harry’s jaw ache with how much he wants to bite them and suck a few bruises into the skin, but it's also phenomenal wank bank material. He’d never admit that if asked, but. The thought of Louis using them to pin him down, hold him up against a wall, choke him a little? Plus, Louis is a sucker for Harry painting his nails — when he’d noticed Harry painted them a few weeks ago for the first time, Louis’ jaw had dropped and he immediately picked up Harry’s hand, gently running his thumb along the nail beds. When he’d looked back up into Harry’s eyes, Louis’ were noticeably darkened and his eyelids were hooded. The rest of the day, whenever he’d noticed Harry about to start a task that might ruin his nails, he’d intervene to help. Harry’s nails were definitely dry at this point and if they chipped, he could’ve always just redone them that night, but it was cute to see Louis care so much and it was lovely to be taken care of by him. The sexual tension had been through the roof that day, though; Niall and Liam even went as far as to stay out of Louis’ way entirely whenever they could — they did not want to get in between Louis and whatever he was going through. They didn’t even know about Harry and Louis almost getting off against Harry’s car before going home that night and Harry still couldn’t blame them. 

“You sure we really need to do that, Haz?” Louis asks with an amused glint in his eye as he raises an eyebrow.

Oh no. Louis might have caught on. There’s only one thing to do now: keep it moving. 

“Yeah, of course! We can’t form our best judgments just by looking at the photo on the paint canister, you know? Gotta open it up and look at the paint itself, too.” 

Right. Okay. Maybe not keep it moving like that. His flirting seriously, truly, honestly has a ways to go. How he managed to get someone like Louis, he’s got no idea; his game is absolutely atrocious. 

One might say that maybe his first issue is still using the word ‘game’, but that’s neither here nor there, thanks.

💿 - beat can come off as an aloof kinda guy at first. maybe even a bit snarky. but if he warms up with you, he can show a more friendly, yet still sarcastic side to himself.

🪀 - yoyo can be really cocky sometimes. so arrogant & naive, but never narcissistic enough to put others down for himself. He may act like he’s so full of himself sometimes, but he really just wants to fit in. That's why he lies all the time.

💿+🪀 - Beat had a light-hearted rivalry with yoyo ever since he brought him to the ggs. Over time, they’ve bonded over their art together through all the tagging games they’d play together & also the races. Even if neither of them won’t admit it out loud (especially yoyo), they secretly respected each other despite both of their constant attempts to one-up each other.

🌽 - He tries to go with the flow most of the time. with style. corn was actually an old member of the noise tanks. in a way. he used to be within rokkaku’s robotics academy before realizing his true passion for art. Specifically, graffiti. Once he graduated, he got a job working under rokkaku’s robotics department & actually helped in creating the circuitry within a noise tank prototype (aka, roboy :>). However, he soon found out about how terrible of a person Gouji was, so corn secretly began to drift away from his job to become a rudie & stop supporting him. He still keeps his keypass tho just in case he needs to steal any parts (& maybe resell them if he needs change idk)

🫧 - She doesn’t care one bit about what others think about her. And she’s been so carefree ever since she stopped thinking about that a while ago. Many relationships later, Gum has learned how to calm her thoughts & become the cool, collected person she is today. She also might’ve had a love crisis only to realize she MIGHT be a girl kisser

🌽+🫧 - they used to be on separate rival teams before they met. but they eventually broke free after weeks of being friendly with each other when they weren’t in an ongoing turf war, & thus creating the ggs.

♥️ - moved into the fortified residential zone a few months ago, but has been a writer for about more than a year. He's selfish, & can come off as a jerk because he grew up that way. He wasn't shown much empathy back then, so he wont show much back. However, he learns to give sympathy once he realizes the consequences it leaves on others & himself. starting with a beat once they find yoyo

🔋- Produced by the noise tanks (NT) under the Rokkaku group as a close carbon copy of yoyo. the NTs took him so they'd have more accurate results when it came to making nt3k. And it worked. Maybe a little too well. Hell, there were some moments where nt3k would just mock yoyo in his cage exactly like he would towards beat, albeit a little more harshly. He’s essentially just like yoyo if he were somehow hired as an assassin. He was programmed with one objective: destroy all rudies (without killing them in broad daylight). And he would stay absolutely loyal to that task for as long as he’d live (unless someone actually found out how to remove his hardwired motive without killing him lol). From now on, he was on a mission to clean the streets. as clean as possible, & in the shadows.

I don’t wanna be insane or anything and I fully support everyone doing their own alterations and what not, and modifying their clothing to fit them and not being too scared to modify/wear very nice things etc etc etc

However, i would just love to know who tailored this beautifully embroidered silk dress I bought a few months back and have yet to alter. Now tell me why I find:

1) random, wrong thread color attempts to darn this silk (this silk is deep plum, the additions are in lilac, black, and red)

2) the dress is very tall and skinny. Maybe the previous owner was very tall and skinny, idk. My issue is not that but the fact that upon simply flipping this dress inside out you can see that they chose to fold over bits of this gorgeous embroidery to make it smaller. Not a critique, just looking at it and being sad that I am having to pick apart construction seams from lovingly embroidered grapes and leaves, and it has messed them up and left tears [long ramble ahead]

Also, the placement of the embroidery, to me, is really odd. A lot of kind of gets sucked into the bias surrounding a lot of the silk so I assume this embroidery was here before the bias binding. So maybe that was one history of an alteration?

But also also, the entirety of the side seams are RAW SILK EDGE. LIKE JUST CUT AND LEFT RAW JUST LIKE THAT. Is this a second pass of alteration? A third???? that aside, they redid the bias binding (?) on the armpits? So why, pray tell, would you leave the side seams of A SILK DRESS completely raw but you still redid the bias binding in the armpit. Like I understand that you wanna fold it normally onto the fabric otherwise you would see the seams for the outside but. THERE ARE WAYS TO DO THIS I FEEL….. I feel like a flat fell seam would be. Permissible???? To keep RAW SILK EDGE from just hanging out. Maybe I am exaggerating but a lot of this has torn already. Whatever

3) more about the embroidery, I don’t think the dress was made first and THEN the embroidery done on it, I suspect it was originally a larger dress thinned to a new owner’s size, but also the embroidery is in spots that make me wonder if this was even originally a dress, or if it just was a long stretch of embroidered silk fabric (unlikely but yk). Maybe it was a different cut of dress and then got altered to this shift shape? There also no tag, so I would love to know if this embroidery was done by hand (again probably not) or by machine, if this dress was made at home or not by a brand, of if the brand tag got clipped. More over I would love to know from when this dress this.

I’m gonna maybe add more room in the side to fit me because otherwise this thing will become a museum piece, but I’m having trouble finding A) silk B) a silk in this color, so I might just settle for flat fell seam the OG sides and attach a side panel. Idk. Any tips would b appreciated I mostly made this to ramble
