I'm going to quibble with the proposed method of calculating the Weighted G-index, which presumes a steady rate of fic production over the entire duration of the fandom. (Dividing the total number of works by the age of the fandom, yielding an average number of works a year.)

In the case of fandoms that had a wave of popularity in their early days, this does not give an accurate estimate of how large the fandom is now. Instead, I propose an Age-Adjusted Goncharov Index, which uses the number of fics produced during the Goncharov era -- in this case, defined as beginning when the Goncharov poster went viral November 18 2022.

Now, AO3 is not precise about dates! Users can set a work's date to anything they please, and in fact some Goncharov works are backdated to before the "film" went viral. Also, multi-chapter works are ordered by last-updated, not first-published! However, we can still get pretty close.

Using November 18 2022 as our cut-off, there are currently 800 works for Goncharov (1973). Going back to the same date for your fandom of interest, calculate the number of works posted since November 18 2022 (note how many pages you are back in the search results, subtract one, multiply by 20, and then add on the number of relevant works on the page where the date cut-off falls). Then use THAT as the relevant number for calculating the Age-Adjusted Goncharov Index.

An example:

For Hornblower (TV) (a fandom that had its surge when the show first aired in the late nineties and early oughts), there are currently 1,200 works total, giving a naive Goncharov Index of 1.5.

Please note that the oldest Hornblower (TV) work on AO3 is dated 10 Oct 2001 -- six years before the inception of the Archive! For a fandom this old, the Weighted Goncharov Index is inappropriate, since the great majority of works created during the nineties and early oughts were created on LiveJournal and Listservs, and have never been ported over to the Archive. If we were to attempt to calculate the Weighted Goncharov Index, it would exclude the vast bulk of fanworks ever created for the fandom! Since it is clearly an inappropriate method for a fandom this old, I will not calculate it.

However, the Age-Adjusted Goncharov Index is meaningful! The November 18 2022 cut-off appears on the sixth page of results (when ordering the fandom tag by date updated). That makes for 5 x 20 = 100 works falling on the first five pages, with an additional 14 works falling on the sixth page: 114 relevant works total. This yields an Age-Adjusted Goncharov Index of 0.14! Considering the current popularities of both fandoms, Goncharov is a MUCH more popular fandom than this older TV show, which currently has only a couple dozen active fans.

Obviously, as the Goncharov fandom ages past its own initial surge of popularity, this method may need to be updated! But this is an improved method for weighting a fandom's current popularity, and especially so for fandoms that are older than the Archive itself.

So, update on that one post i made (that i did NOT expect to get so much attention) about wanting to write a fic about monk and survivor's parents and third sibling... yes I'm working on it!

It's taking a while though since I keep procrastinating and I want this first chapter to be as perfect as possible. But because I'm feeling nice, here's a little snip of the beginning of the first chapter, immediately after monk's intro!

Yes, the slugs will have dialogue, they have their own special language in my headcanon.

This fic will be primarily focused on family dynamics and might be a little.. "fierce" in terms of family relationships. This is a crumbling rat family and its not all cupcakes and rainbows... sorry, I like angst. I'm not 100% sure how harsh I wanna make this but just incase, if you find mildly abusive, controlling or broken families triggering, I would not recommend. this'll be mostly based off my own experience with my own family.

in my HC, Slugcats have a simple naming convention, similar to the way they're named in the campaigns, its usually names given by their family or peers based off their appearance or occupation/what they're known for.

The parents are named "Father Coral" for the pink slug and "Father Ivory" for the white slug. The third Sibling was simply called "the Blue One" before the incident where they were named "the Residual (pup)" after.

Most pups are named "the (Color) One" before they grow up and the slugs around them end up referring to them by what they're mostly known for. There is no official agreed name for each slugcat so usually some slugcats end up having multiple (nick)names.

What's the Kenzie Reboot thing? I was going to reblog asking for clarification, but the post stopped existing.

oops! It's a crossover I rotate in my head sometimes, dumping pre-canon or early-canon Kenzie in the world of cyberpunk dystopian podcast REBOOT.EXE.

My first and latest attempt at a blurb is:

but this is kind of misleading, because it looks like the story is about Kenzie's clinginess, and even 9-10y/o Kenzie is only slightly more messed up than everyone else in the Reboot main cast.

She befriends a sentient robot with baby-fever psychosis. The team's hacker becomes her role model the instant he starts doing cocaine and becoming a cyborg to Sleep Less And Hack More. She gets in an intense info-warfare nemesis-ship with one minor antagonist, a bioengineered kid with an eidetic memory. She also slips him invisible cameras under the guise of bugging him and hints real hard that he should use them to blackmail his abusive parents. She also cyborgs herself almost immediately. Good times!

So a little while ago I reblogged a post about downloading Ao3 fics and in the tags I freaked out a bit about how awesome it is you can save your stuff in epub.

For context; in the editing courses I've taken, we talked a bit about how preparing epub files takes some effort bc they need to have extra programming in them to accommodate for things like adjusting the font size on the fly on e-readers, or internal links for notes/references, etc. So knowing that Ao3 generates a generic but very workable epub of your file, for free, really tickled me bc I think that's just awesome.

And it works really well! I use a desktop reader called Calibre (which is free btw, I highly recommend) for my ebooks which has its own tts, lets you highlight, leave bookmarks, etc. Ao3's epubs incorporate the tags, summary, and chapter notes in a really clean way. Check it out:

All the tags, warnings, ratings, and links to the originals are on their own automatically-generated "Preface" page. And the fic summary gets its own page as well:

Chapters with notes will have them where they are located in the original (ie. beginning or end notes.) Chapters with end notes hyperlink within the document to jump to the end of the chapter to view those notes

And that Afterword page? Links directly to the Comment function of the fic you downloaded it from! Super convenient!

Anyway I just think it's neat! If you're the type to reread your own stuff frequently, saving an epub version to use in a reader is a really convenient way to do so. It's also an interesting way to share your fics. And of course to download other people's work as well! (Just be sure you download from the "Entire Work" page to get the whole thing!)

Hello! I just realized I had half-typed up an answer to this and completely forgot to finish it, so apologies that this is deeply, deeply overdue!

I am absolutely cool with it, with a few caveats but only of the disclaimer sort. (And that's not even to say that they're necessarily things that pertain to you, but I figured if I was commenting now I should just lay my thoughts out there, in case anyone else goes looking.)

I'm personally of the mind that transformative works of a transformative work are just as fine as the original transformative work itself, though I know that not everyone agrees. I'm not going to begrudge anyone their own personal rights for how their writing is used, but I have always felt that it would be hypocritical of me to consider it in any other way. (I'll spare you my deconstructive essay on the nature of transformative works in modern culture or I'll take another month to answer lol.)

That being said, the disclaimers! First, I will probably write more in that universe, and as such I will... probably not read other folks' dabblings in it. Not because I would be uninterested, but because I do take the author-ly point of view in that I want your works to be yours, and mine to be mine, so I don't want to find that I've inadvertently snatched up a plot from someone else without realizing. And in a similar vein, attribution of what you're riffing off of would be nice, but at the very least please don't, I don't know, claim that I've totally vetted it and it's definitely fully canon to the original work, or something of the sort. Both because of the aforementioned, I will write further things and I don't want to garner any confusion, your works are yours and mine are mine, and also because if anyone for any reason wanted to come complain to me about a fic, I'd much prefer it was indeed my fic.

(Like I said, I don't presume you need any of that noted in particular—just figured I should note it, since in general I am pretty laissez-faire when it comes to transformative works as a whole haha.)
