lilia dorm uniform vignettes + book 7 parallels

I was rereading Lilia's Dorm Uniform vignettes recently and honed in on the third part, which reminded me a lot of the events of book 7. I think it's highly likely that part 3 here foreshadows book 7, similar to how Ortho's Precision Gear vignettes foreshadowed the original Ortho's passing, revealed in book 6.

Quick recap, these vignettes focus on Lilia looking after a baby bat with an injury. The third and final part involves Malleus chatting with him about the experience. Lilia describes parenting as thus: "There's never a guarantee in life that someone will be there to support you. Once you fly out into the world, there may be days when you go without a proper meal and sleep on an empty stomach. You'll experience failures and setbacks. You may have days where your heart feels like it'll shatter into a thousand pieces. As long as you're alive, there will be moments—many moments, in fact—when you must face adversity entirely on your own. A parent must ensure their child can handle such harshness while the little one is still under their protection."
Knowing what we know now... It sounds as though Lilia is reflecting back on his time traveling the world in hopes of finding a way to hatch Malleus from the egg. Firstly, Lilia (especially in the past) has expressed sentiments about being alone. He was an orphan taken in as a ward by the Draconias, yet he still never felt as though he "fit", not with the way the senate treats him like a lesser being, and not with his two best friends (Maleanor and Raverne) marrying and conceiving a child--starting a family, something Lilia feels he does not have and cannot have himself. There's never a guarantee in life that someone will be there to support you. And that's true of Malleus as well. His father is missing and presumed dead, his mother died in a battle to ensure his safety, and his grandmother is kept busy with royal duties to be there for him all the time. That's why Lilia had to step up as his father figure--because otherwise Malleus would have no guidance, just like Lilia did in his youth, which led him into becoming closed off and unwilling to learn about the world beyond Briarland. He doesn't want Malleus--or any of his "kids"--to perpetuate the hatred and distrust that claimed so many lives and left scars on the survivors.
Once you fly out into the world, there may be days when you go without a proper meal and sleep on an empty stomach. This line is reflective of the experiences Lilia had on his travels. In the beginning, it was particularly difficult due to the prevailing anti-fae sentiments among humans. Lilia was not welcome in their communities; he'd have things and nasty words thrown at him and literally be chased out of towns. True, he's also had to deal with rations and always being alert while serving as a general, but it feels particularly frustrating in this context because 1) none of his men are around to support him in these moments; he is lacking the feeling of being a part of a group, and 2) the harsh treatment is being committed by a group for which he cannot retaliate, so it forces Lilia to stand there and just take it... Both conditions which are also true of Lilia when he is able to safely bring Malleus's egg to Castle Blackscale. The senate gang up on him, isolate him, and deem him unworthy of touching the heir... and Lilia can't do anything about it. He isn't accepted at home and he isn't accepted by the world. This makes it that much more meaningful when, later on his travels, he meets an elderly couple in Harveston that welcome him into their house and home. They offer him a warm bed, food, and, more importantly, they are his company. They want to hear his stories, learn more about him and his life experiences. They’re that light at the end of his tunnel--but those things aren't promised to him, and Lilia knows he can't count on them all the time, especially as he travels to the most remote regions. And don't we all fear that dreadful realization of being out on our own with no net to catch us if we fall?
You'll experience failures and setbacks. You may have days where your heart feels like it'll shatter into a thousand pieces. As long as you're alive, there will be moments—many moments, in fact—when you must face adversity entirely on your own. Again, Lilia is also speaking about himself. He was forced to abandon his princess and flee with her child. He lost his best friends and large sections of his home country to a bloody conflict. He took the senate's verbal abuse and degradation. All of this, he faced alone--even when Baur tries to stand up for him, Lilia silences his ally because, deep in his heart, he thinks he deserves this. The wild bat incapable of love, only able to slaughter, doomed to be alone forever. It's through his forced exposure to the world that Lilia learns to open up, and it's through the connections--after enduring so many hardships, so many trials and tribulations--he makes with others that he comes to learn he is capable of love. As Silver says, this must be why the happiest moment of his father's life is the moment of Malleus hatching. A dragon's egg can only do so with the love of a parent--and Lilia has always been that for him. Diasomnia is Lilia's new family, and he's no longer alone. The problem now is that it's Malleus's turn to learn harsh life lessons, and he isn't exactly prepared for them. A parent must ensure their child can handle such harshness while the little one is still under their protection. I think this line perfectly summarizes Lilia's motivations for leaving in the fashion that he does. When Lilia attempted to depart NRC without so much as a formal farewell to Malleus and Silver, many fans were confused as to why he was acting so callous towards his children. Some theorized that Lilia was lying about losing his magic or had some other ulterior motive for lying--when, really, I think the answer is much simpler than that. Lilia wanted to leave as soon as he could, without facing his kids, because that's just in his nature. As Malleus points out in the vignettes: "Is that why you took the approach you did? [...] I suspect this bat will thrive in the wild." This entire time, Lilia hasn't been the gentlest or the most prudent with the baby bat. He fed it milk from a cup instead of a bottle (which resulted in getting the bat all wet), roughly toweled it off, allowed it to hang in a tree when it may not be ready to fly yet, brushed off the possibility of it being hurt again if it falls out, etc. On a surface-level, it looks like bad caretaking. But Malleus wonders if it's intentional. Because the bat was put through those experiences, it can take care of itself once it has parted from Lilia's care. I suspect Lilia may think the same of how he raises his own children. After all, Silver and Sebek sometimes bring up how hellish Lilia's training sessions with them were. Some of his bad childcare is due to Lilia being disorganized and just winging it in the moment, yeah (something which Malleus comments on at the end of the vignettes)--but a lot of how he raises others is also built on the idea that this should make the kids stronger and able to stand on their own.
When Lilia goes to return the baby bat to its flock, he says, "Go on, little one. You can't cling to my hand forever. Get flying." Then Malleus laughs and remarks, "Heh, it seems rather attached to you. It doesn't want to let go." Lilia continues with, "I'm shaking my arm and it's still not letting go... Goodness gracious. I didn't raise [the baby bat] to be so clingy. There comes a time in every creature's life when they have to take action. This is your time, little one. Don't miss your window." And, at last, when the bat is able to take off, Malleus realizes, "[...] I must say, it was rather harsh of you to forcibly shake off the poor fellow when it clearly liked you. Did you intentionally act detached so that it wouldn't fall too far behind the colony?"
THIS WHOLE SCENE IS AN ANALOGY TO LILIA TRYING TO LEAVE NRC WITHOUT SAYING GOODBYE TO HIS KIDS.
In this analogy, Malleus is that bat that Lilia has reared--and when it comes time for Lilia to leave, Malleus won't allow for it. Malleus is the clingy baby bat gripping onto his caretaker for dear life. I wonder if Lilia knew that his prince would have a hard time with it, so he tries to have one last happy send-off--so he can grant Malleus the happiness of being invited to something, to be included, and to provide him ample opportunities to socialize with his peers from all the dorms and make other connections so they can be there for him when Lilia is no longer able to. Then Malleus was late, and the time for Lilia to depart has already arrived. But maybe it's better this way, Lilia may have reasoned with himself. If Malleus doesn't appear, maybe he can't be hurt. If Lilia acts detached, maybe... just maybe... it will give Malleus the final shove he needs to let him go, to open up to the people who are going to be present around him, so he won't "fall too far behind the colony", like what happened with the actual baby bat he raised. This is especially suspect because Lilia makes the same plea to the first years earlier in the party by asking them to please give Sebek a lil' push if he ever needs it. "Just... If you notice [Sebek is] ever stuck at some point during your time here... I would ask that you card soldiers give him a little nudge."
THE LILIA DORM UNIFORM CARD FIRST CAME OUT ON THE JP SERVER IN FEB 2023 ALONG WITH SOME EARLY BOOK 7 UPDATES 😩 It’s such good foreshadowing for what happens much later in the same book… OTL I just hope that Malleus is able to learn the lessons Lilia wants him to. Then Malleus can finally be the baby bat that’s able to take flight on his own and join a flock without his guardian at his side forever and ever…

Such a good post!
I for sure need to reread the books, so forgive me if my memory fails at some point, but Boromir’s battle deeds, and generally his “love for war” is a very interesting aspect of him. 
It makes so much sense that this desperate action that led to such great losses could shift the perception of Boromir in favor of his brother. But also as destroying the bridge actually ensured Gondor’s safety for a year or so, I feel some may - and someone may actually did in books? - claim that Faramir lacks his brother’s boldness. We know that both brothers were great commanders in their own right and it is understandable their leadership varied from each other, both for how different they were as people, due to different circumstances and nature of their duties (leading rangers and soldiers on the first line demanded different battle tactics). At the same time, from the little we know about them, they both took an active part in fighting in the most dire actions and would be the last ones to leave the battlefield so in some aspects they were very alike. It is not so hard for me to see how both were loved and respected by their soldiers, even if most folks would not really understand the burden of leadership Boromir and Faramir were forced to bear for the sake of Gondor. I can see how Boromir could be seen as reckless, especially in the context of the battle over the bridge that cost so many soldiers.
But there is one thing I wonder about this battle - Boromir told at the meeting of the Council this: 
“Believe not that in the land of Gondor the blood of Númenor is spent, nor all its pride and dignity forgotten. By our valour the wild folk of the East are still restrained, and the terror of Morgul kept at bay; and thus alone are peace and freedom maintained in the lands behind us, bulwark of the West. But if the passages of the River should be won, what then? “Yet that hour, maybe, is not now far away. The Nameless Enemy has arisen again. Smoke rises once more from Orodruin that we call Mount Doom. The power of the Black Land grows and we are hard beset. When the Enemy returned our folk were driven from Ithilien, our fair domain east of the River, though we kept a foothold there and strength of arms. But this very year, in the days of June, sudden war came upon us out of Mordor, and we were swept away. We were outnumbered, for Mordor has allied itself with the Easterlings and the cruel Haradrim; but it was not by numbers that we were defeated. A power was there that we have not felt before. “Some said that it could be seen, like a great black horseman, a dark shadow under the moon. Wherever he came a madness filled our foes, but fear fell on our boldest, so that horse and man gave way and fled. Only a remnant of our eastern force came back, destroying the last bridge that still stood amid the ruins of Osgiliath. “I was in the company that held the bridge, until it was cast down behind us. Four only were saved by swimming: my brother and myself and two others. But still we fight on, holding all the west shores of Anduin; and those who shelter behind us give us praise, if ever they hear our name: much praise but little help. Only from Rohan now will any men ride to us when we call.
If I understand right, the attack came suddenly, leaving little time to gather the needed forces or to hold a war council to determine the best course of action. Even during the Return of the King, when Gondor’s safety was put in direct danger, Denethor had time to form a plan and do some preparation for the battle to come. He send the messenger to Rohan to call his allies for help, he and Faramir debated how to process with their strategy, as in, should they sacrifice their forces in Osgiliath to keep enemy at bay for as long as it is possible or redraw the army and focus on Minas Tirith alone. But from Boromir's story, it seems that despite keeping an eye on the Mordor and guarding the river, Gondor was not ready for the mass attack and it is not just the orcs, Easterlings and Haradrim united forces but the dreading dark powers of Nazguls that brought a great loss to their army as well.��
And this makes me think, did Boromir even have time to consult the battleplan with his father? Who, as we remember, was the highest rank commander and one that took an active part in planning the defense and mind you, did a pretty good job of it for decades. Did Denethor send his sons into possible the most dangerous battle Gondor experienced in the last decades to do his will, with a clear plan or did Boromir and Faramir were forced to act as they were, relying on their war experience, bravery and the little bits of informations gathered in pretty chaotic battle due to Nazgul’s spreading dread between Gondor’s forces? Did during the battle Boromir (and Faramir) come to the final conclusion that the bridge must be destroyed at any cost, even if this means to sacrifice the whole regiment, brother and himself? Or was that the plan from the start, their desperate suicidal mission to begin with?
The situation is dire, even the bravest soldiers aren’t immune to the fear and dark presence of the Nazgul, it is be or not to be for Gondor, because either they stop the enemy right here and there or Minas Tirith may not survive and with it, all the Middle-Earth may be lost. At that moment, those who accompanied Boromir and Faramir understood they had little to no chance to survive but their sacrifice may still save Gondor. And yes, soldiers were pushed to the brink of exhaustion, as we have no idea how long the battle - the Gondor counterattack lasted but also, Boromir (and Faramir) did not just send people on pretty much suicidal task, he lead them to the last moment of battle, he leapt with them into dangerous water. And I think that yes, this will to sacrifice his own soldiers to ensure Gondor’s safety could tarnish some of his reputation, especially right away after the battle, but because he was there to the bitter end and put his life on the line like any other soldier did, people still could love and admire him and be saddened by his death. 
And they did, didn't they? Boromir's decisions led to people's death yet it's thank to the same decision that enemy was drove back and half of Osgiliath stayed under Gondor's control:
“So near to Mordor?” said Beregond quietly. “Yes, there it lies. We seldom name it; but we have dwelt ever in sight of that shadow: sometimes it seems fainter and more distant; sometimes nearer and darker. It is growing and darkening now; and therefore our fear and disquiet grow too. And the Fell Riders, less than a year ago they won back the crossings, and many of our best men were slain. Boromir it was that drove the enemy at last back from this western shore, and we hold still the near half of Osgiliath. For a little while. But we await now a new onslaught there. Maybe the chief onslaught of the war that comes.”
So eventual resentment for Boromir's recklessness may be subdued with passing time, as people saw how in the end it saved them for another year.
In the book, Faramir was thinking about his men and argued with Denethor should they try to hold Osgiliath or retreat their army and though I think both plans had merit, it feels to me that Boromir and Denethor had more similar approach to battles; that sometimes you must sacrifice your own forces if such sacrifice will allow you to buy the precious time for Minas Tirith. And hey, maybe Faramir was once like his brother and father in that regard, but the battle and what came after destroying the bridge was what made him rethink this strategy? And yeah, the appendix states that between the brothers there was great love and “no jealousy or rivalry had arisen between them” but seeing how Faramir talk about his dead brother in the books, I wonder if this critique of Boromir’s recklessness isn’t somehow tied to some PTSD from the “bridge experience” that is like, the last battle they took part together? I may be misremembering the events, so sorry for that, but I’m pretty sure Faramir told Denethor that Boromir is dead because of Denethor's choice to send him to Elrond, so there is some hidden anger, frustration and lashing out, I think?
(though the recklessness of Boromir may have never been about his battle deeds and decisions, but that he left the City for the quest soon after that? Something Faramir wished to do, but was not chosen?)
Sorry, it is late and I’m rambling, but I would love to learn more about how good Boromir was at strategy. How much his passion for war lore helped him to plan and lead people, how much of the “destroy the bridge at any cost” moment was planned or acted out of desperation? How much did it burden him to know that Gondor’s safety was paid with his soldiers’ life he himself led to their death? A choice he would make again and again, if needed.
Seriously, the burden of responsibility Boromir and his family carried for years is so underrated.
BOROMIR RETOOK OSGILIATH!!! Did yall know this?? I did in theory but in practice it just hit me, both the east AND the west sides of Osgiliath were overrun in the initial invasion from the Morgul Vale!!! The orcs had ENTIRE control of the river crossing!! Bridge intact and all!! Boromir had to BESEIGE THE RUIN HIMSELF!!! With no aid from other provinces, no reinforcements from any other Lord and he had NO TIME at all, they needed to win back at least half of the city yesterday just to ensure they didn’t lose control of the Pelennor and all access to the roads and safe escape for refugees. And Boromir KNEW they wouldn’t be able to hold one side by force alone, they just didn’t have the numbers!
And with all this internalised, a lot else makes sense to me. This narrative within some of the soldiers that has this quiet… almost angry tone of ‘Faramir is just as capable a tactician as Boromir, he’s just less reckless’. As well as Boromir’s leaving, when you would imagine that to be out of the question when he’s such a pivotal figure for so many. Boromir! Used up all the trust and respect he had garnered from Gondor just to win back Osgiliath and then destroy the bridge!! He didn’t just lead a massive defence where only 4 soldiers survived, that was the last engagement in a gruelling siege that saw him asking things of his soldiers that he never had before. He used reckless and desperate tactics to reclaim each control point he needed and he drove his soldiers to the BRINK of exhaustion and grief and THEN he stood in front of all who were left and just asked them to straight up die. He had to tell them!!!!! to make sure!!!! they leaped into the river in the end, not to save their lives, but to keep their bodies from enemy hands!!!! FFFFF
THE DESPERATION! THE QUESTiONiNG!!! And Faramir would have fought him on it! Faramir would have disagreed with so much! This wasn’t adding to the glory of Gondor, this wasn’t enhancing their legacy, this wasn’t what Gondorians DO! And despite still following Boromir’s orders, people would have known he was against these decisions. And when Boromir, Faramir and those two others were found crawling out onto the riverbank down the Anduin, trust in Boromir was shaken, love for Boromir was darkened. And though, even through it all, they held both love and trust in him, and grieved him desperately when he was lost, it was hard to remember him without this. And Boromir knew that!! He knew that Faramir was now in a position of more warmth from their soldiers. He knew what he had lost in the siege, he had known he would lose it from the start! And he deemed it all necessary, he made these calculations and decided it was either this or imminent defeat! 
(Because Boromir has never cared about his image beyond how it can help him!!! Ever!! No moment in the book does he EVER show even the slightest concern for how others see him!!! How is him being self conscious a thing the fandom believes!!! AAAA)
And I’m inclined to agree he was right because Faramir does not succeed in retaking Osgiliath again. We don’t know the shifting of army numbers, it’s highly possible for Faramir to have had either less or more soldiers at his disposal by the time it comes to RotK, but the basic reality is that Boromir retook Osgiliath whereas Faramir didn’t. And Faramir tried! He put a great deal of effort into it! He probably made some excellent tactical decisions and won back as much as he could. But he was never going to sacrifice his nobility or morals for anything, so he had to retreat in the end. And then the city was besieged! 
But it was a CIVILIAN-LESS city! Because of Boromir’s decisions!! And because of the nervous, fearful, teeth gritted and bitterly mournful sacrifice of soldiers who followed him. Who all deserved better! They were good people and they had lives and loves and passions and they gave it up to the evil god at their door just to give everyone else one more year. And their friends and family were well within their rights to blame Boromir for not finding another way! Which Boromir! Also! Accepted! He made bold decisions and trusted in his own judgement but then accepted when he had been wrong!!! ALWAYS!! EVEN AT THE VERY END-!!!!! FUCK.

one of the very offputting and indigestible things about a lot of modern media is the pivot to the quality being the same experience as reading fanfiction. I've only read a little fanfiction in my life, and of course, there are always stand outs in fan works. But I feel everyone can know what I mean when I say it's like reading fanfiction. And I feel like it's a spectrum. For example, right now I'm rereading Hench, and I would say there is a distinctly fanfiction flavor to the work, in that I can tell the author has read a lot of fanfiction, I can clearly guess at some of their favorite tags and tropes, the taste of fanfiction is in my mouth. However, the work itself is compelling enough, the characters flushed out an interesting enough, and the story inviting enough that I am able to bear it with grace. This is like the middle of the spectrum. The far end of the spectrum is when reading a book is exactly like reading a fanfiction (term for this? If the other is flavor...) It's all trope. it's cheap and unearned. It's shallow. It's enjoyable mostly to people who read a lot of fanfiction because it does exactly the same thing. Fanfiction flavored is sometimes tolerable to me, but I resent it, especially when the tropes are paraphilias and fetishes in disguise, but not only then. It's distasteful. And more and more new books and TV series and movies are further and further on the spectrum of how much like fanfiction they feel, how clearly they are made by creators who grew up in fandom, "living and breathing fandom". And because fanfiction-adjacent creations are stripped down to the most appealing and easily accessible plot points and paths, characters & emotions for a fandom-steeped or fandom-ready (innocent) audience, they sell well, they test well with test audiences, they make money. I just routinely see the idea that fandom is basically a free space, it's not hurting anyone everyone's having fun, why do we need to be critical of this? And it's like well it's profoundly transforming the entertainment industry, which profoundly transforms what media people grow up on which is certainly something worth thinking about. And media literacy is a term that's now reached internet driven semantic satiation and become a meme. Instead of something that is important to moving through the world and a practice you can develop your entire life. And I hate how defensive everyone gets about this. I have no power to take away your fandom. I just want think critically and deeply about this like any other social phenomenon.

1. Hirano is PROBABLY aroace or demiromantic
this is one of my favorite arguments so I'll start right away!!
I've been rereading the spin off and I've noticed some things i guess I hadn't noticed before.
why do i think hirano is aroace?
because he's just uninterested. like, if kagi hadn't brought everything up, would he have ever even thought about a possible relationship?
he's not interested in relationships, he's probably never felt anything for anyone or we wouldn't be where we are right now (aka, waiting for him to realize). it's not clear if he dislikes the idea of a relationship tho, he seems pretty flexible but not too comfortable about it. like he's starting not to mind him and kagi acting like a couple but it wasn't like this before.
why demiromantic?
well, I don't think he's into a specific gender. he said he never thought about dating a guy but he still isn't against the idea of possibly dating one. what I'm saying is that he's probably into people he has a bond with, he tends to develop deeper feelings for people he's close with and it has nothing to do with gender or physical attraction. he never made any comment, never had a thought about kagi's appearance and he specifically likes his personality and the person he is (he likes him as a person. oh the memories😭). it actually makes more sense to me for him to be catching feelings now that his bond with kagi has gotten deeper because he knows him better, he feels closer to him in a certain way and that's absolutely great.
OR i just thought about it while writing this but i think he'll just stay unlabeled and I'd love that. unlabeled king!!! 🗣️🗣️
2. Kagiura might not be bi
i think he just was suspiciously not interested in his girlfriend during his middle school days. like he himself compared his lap pillow thing with his ex girlfriend to the one with Hirano and he had a face that said "nah, this is completely different" like, dude, did you even like her? 😭
we haven't seen enough of his past so honestly I wouldn't say he's gay but i seriously doubt he's bi, idk😞

do you guys ever think about how the story starts with andrew acting quickly slamming a random racquet into neil's stomach to keep him from running away and ends with andrew acting quickly breaking riko's arm with his racquet and then using it as a shield to protect neil. because i think about it all the time.

FUCK i mixed up the order i thought misa’s parents’ killer was killed after the stalking but it’s the other way around. god damn it. okay just pretend it happened like this for my sake alright.
[last time on soulmate AU so you don’t have to reread: light met L at the student representative speech and Pointedly Did Not shake his hand, and also misa told her manager she was going to move to tokyo]

Light manages to avoid touching L for an impressive two days.
Even after tennis — when L extends his hand to him, in the traditional good-game handshake, Light pretends he doesn’t see it as he wipes his palms on his shorts and puts his racket back into the bag. L cocks his head for a second, then lowers his arm back to his side.
Will he think I’m Kira based on my standoffish behavior? No, Kira is dedicated to justice and cares about the people, there’s no way he’d be standoffish… But would Light Yagami be…? I’ll just act friendly to make up for it.
“I think we’re both thirsty, and there’s something I want to ask you, so — do you want to get a drink somewhere?” he asks, straightening and slinging his bag over his shoulder.
“Well, you beat me, so you can ask me anything you want,” L says. “But I ought to tell you something first.”
“What’s that?”
“I suspect you may in fact be Kira,” L says, as easy as anything. “If you still want to ask me questions after that, go ahead.”
Light swallows. Damn it. He can’t reasonably ask for proof that L is who he says he is, then, not until his suspicion is cleared. He got him again. How does L always keep one step in front of him?
“Haha,” he says, “me, Kira?”
“Well, when I say ‘suspect,’ I only mean by a factor of one percent,” L says. “Is your wrist alright, Yagami-kun?”
Light glances down. Oh. He lets go.
“Yeah, of course,” he says. “Just strained it a little.”

“Misa!” Akako’s tinny voice blares from the speakers. “Good news!”
“Huh?” Misa sits up, still holding her phone to her ear. “Akako-chan, it’s six in the morning…”
“I know! I’ll go to bed soon, just, listen, Misa! Remember the hexing circle I set up for you, for, uh, you-know-who?”
“The one with the voodoo doll I stabbed in the heart?”
“Yeah, that one! Check the detention center website, Misa! Do it right now!”
“Okay, okay,” Misa says, fumbling for her laptop. She has the website bookmarked by now. It loads slowly. There’s the usual banner of Kira victims running slowly on the top of the page—
Oh.
“Oh my god,” Misa whispers.
“He’s dead, Misa! He’s dead! You don’t have to go anymore!”
Kira… avenged her parents. Kira saved her.
A strangled sob escapes her throat.
“Misa? Are you okay?”
“This is the best day of my life,” Misa says.
“I know! Now you don’t even need to move to Tokyo—”
Misa hangs up. She wraps her hand around her neck and squeezes, just once.
She has to meet him. She has to say thank-you. Her life’s purpose has narrowed now; she’s one step closer to being free of it all.
There’s an odd thump.
Misa jolts, dropping the phone. She looks around. Everything’s in place, even the skull decoration that keeps falling off its hook. Huh. Wait, it sounded more like it came from the balcony…
She peers through the window, then frowns.
A notebook?

“Here, Ryuzaki, I got your t—”
“…”
“…”
“…Yagami-kun?”
“Oh, sorry. It’s nothing. My bad for bumping into you.”
“You did? I didn’t feel anything.”
“………Right. I didn’t feel anything, either.”
“So, what was it you wanted to ask me?”
“That can wait until you’re positive I’m not Kira. You go ahead and start, Ryuga.”

“Do Shinigamis have soulmates?”
“Is that what you humans call the ones who share the marks on your skin?”
“What else would you call it?”
“Scars. And no, we don’t.”
“Oh. …That’s a romantic way to think about it. But it must be lonely for you.”
“I’ve never wanted one before.”
“I could draw one on you! I’m pretty good at drawing, you know.”
“Would that not be even lonelier? To have a mark without anyone to share it with?”
“Ahahaha! You’re smart, Rem.”

It is a good thing that Ryuga isn’t his soulmate. It would have been dangerous, not to mention societally inappropriate. Light is happy about this.
He wishes he could talk to Ryuk in public, if only to yell at him to stop laughing.

“If I got the Shinigami Eyes, could I tell who my soulmate was?”
“No. It wouldn’t be helpful for us Shinigami, so we never evolved the function.”
“Darn,” Misa pouts. “Oh well. I want them anyway.”
“…Are you sure?”
“Yeah? Duh?”
Later in the afternoon, she’s very careful with her gloves as she slides the tapes into Akako’s envelopes. She can’t think of anything worse than someone who isn’t Kira getting their hands over her fingerprints.

L/Ryuga/Ryuzaki/whoever keeps brushing past him whenever Light goes to headquarters. Physically, that is. Leaving little sparks of contact in his wake.
It’s on purpose. It has to be, at this point.
What is his game? Does he think he can — seduce Kira, or something? Even if Kira was gay, surely L wouldn’t expect him to be attracted to the man hunting him down. Besides, physical proximity doesn’t fluster Light. He’s very used to it. His friends from high school slung their arms over his shoulders, elbowed him, high-fived him all the time.
“Here,” L says, dangling a piece of paper in front of him. “For you to compose your message to the fake Kira.”
He says fake with such conviction. “Thanks,” Light says. He doesn’t snatch it fast enough to stop L’s thumb from grazing his wrist.
Nothing happens. Nothing happened the past few hundred times, either.
“Did you need something else?” Light asks, when L doesn’t move.
“No,” L says. “I’ll leave you to it.”

Rem is very careful to never touch Misa. It’s honestly a little cute. She hovers over Misa like a shield as they walk down the streets of Aoyama, sharp-sharp-sharp claws turned away from Misa’s skin.
Misa has a phone wedged between her wig and her shoulder so it doesn’t look like she’s talking to air, but she still turns her face upward to grin at Rem when she says, “Are you excited for the show?”
“Not really,” Rem says. “Trying to find the other Kira is risky, Misa.”
“I know, you’ve only told me a thousand times!”
“I suppose I still don’t understand,” Rem sighs. “I gave you the notebook so you could protect yourself. I didn’t want Gelus’s sacrifice to be in vain.”
“I am protecting myself,” Misa says, tapping the wig. “Haven’t I been careful?”
“You’re putting your life in danger for someone you don’t even know.”
“Are you going to stop me, then?” Misa challenges. “Gonna kill me?”
“No!” Rem sounds legitimately horrified. Misa feels a little guilty for that, though she brightens when they walk past the Note Blue — the cafe should be close now. “I would never hurt you. But… if you hadn’t moved here, you could still be working—”
“I got a new manager, it’s fine—”
“—and you could fend yourself off from any more stalkers with the notebook. You could lead a happy life… away from all of this.”
“Oh, Rem,” Misa says, reaching up to boop the Shinigami’s nose. “You just don’t get it.”
“You’re so selfless,” Rem murmurs, drawing slowly, languidly away from Misa’s touch.
“I’m really not.” But she’s never gotten this point across to Rem no matter how she explains it. For one thing, if she had done what Rem suggests, she would probably have jumped out a window three months in. “Oh look, there’s the cafe!”

“Liiiiight!”
Light isn’t usually jumpy, but he flinches when Sayu shouts his name up the stairs. The TV broadcast is still going just as L had written: We can offer you clemency and police protection if you work with us to capture the First Kira…
He’s fucked. He’s so, so fucked. How did the fake Kira find him? Nothing happened in Aoyama! Nothing even happened in the Note Blue — Light just stood around with Matsuda for thirty painfully awkward minutes! He wasn’t old enough to get the margaritas!
I need a plan, he thinks, while he automatically rises to follow his sister’s voice. She’s probably doing her math homework again. He’s going to sell me out, he’s going to kill me, I need a plan—
“Your friend brought over your notebook!”
Light freezes in the doorway.
Notebook?
“Coming,” he says a second too late, hurrying down the stairs.
“I can’t believe you of all people forgot your notebook at school, onii-chan,” Sayu says, elbowing him a little as he goes by. “You’re losing your touch!”
Light manages to smile at her before he rounds the corner, too distracted to notice the way Sayu’s face slides into a frown. He yanks the door open.

“N-nice to meet you,” says the only human alive who knows Light’s worst-best secret. “I’m Misa Amane.”

The only reason Sachiko isn’t running is because there are children swarming around her, laughing and giggling while she shoves her way through the hall. Where had the nurse’s office been on the map — she rounds a corner, tries to catch her bearings, then notices it: the sounds of someone crying.
Light.
Sachiko yanks the door open, heart pounding in her ribs. Light never cries — he used to as a toddler, of course, but after Sayu was born Sachiko can count on one hand the number of times he’s had a tantrum. Her baby is so mature. When the school had called and told her Light was having some sort of nervous breakdown, I think? she’d dropped everything without a second thought and taken a taxi here.
“There, there,” the nurse is saying, rubbing her son’s back. “It’s okay.”
“Don’t touch me,” Light hiccups, broken and high-pitched, and Sachiko would shout at the nurse to get away from him if not for the fact that Light’s little fingers have the nurse’s wrist in a vice grip as though afraid she'll go.
“Light,” Sachiko says, “I’m here, Light.” She drops her bag on the floor and drops to the floor, cradling his face in her hands; Light doesn’t resist. “What’s wrong, baby?”
“It doesn’t work,” Light sobs. His eyes are puffy with tears. From the nurse’s expression Sachiko surmises this has been going on for a while. “Mama — Mama, where’s Dad?”
Sachiko’s heart twists. “Your dad’s at work,” she says, brushing a soaked strand of hair out of Light’s face. The nurse, free of Light’s grasp, has moved a few paces away to give them space. Light collapses. His head flops on Sachiko’s shoulder; she has to shift her weight to hold him. “Honey, talk to me. What happened?”
“I t-tried everyone,” Light says, voice a little muffled in Sachiko’s sweater. “Even the o-older girls, and the boys, and — nothing happened.”
Well, that’s probably good, Sachiko manages to not say aloud. What business does Light have with the upper-grade kids? “Did you want something to happen?” she asks instead.
Light nods miserably. “Noriko-sensei s-says you’ll know when it does. You’ll see it.”
“When wh—?”
Sachiko stops. She thinks. Light’s hand has clamped around her wrist, like he did with the nurse’s, and for the first time she realizes. He’s covering her soulmate tattoo.
“Light,” she says slowly, “what did you do?”
She doesn’t mean for it to sound accusatory, but Light bursts into a new round of tears against her shoulder. Sachiko, shocked, wraps her arms around him, runs a hand through his hair. “It’s okay, Light,” she tries. “It’s okay!”
Light keeps sobbing.
Sachiko looks up at the nurse. “What class was he in just now?”
“Arts and crafts,” the nurse says. “They were making bracelets.”
The red camellias are printed in a woven pattern encircling Sachiko’s wrist. They are silent.
“It was my idea!” Light gasps out between hiccups.
Sachiko takes a moment before she speaks.
“Light, were you trying to find your soulmate?”
“I-it doesn’t make any sense,” Light says. His free hand is clenched in a fist. “You — you and Dad said — you’ll always meet —”
Sachiko swallows her horror. This is her fault. This is all her fault.
“Nurse,” she says, “could you please leave us alone?”
The nurse nods and withdraws through the door.
Sachiko sighs. She knew she’d have to give her kids the talk one day, but Light is only six, and she’d thought she had more time…
“Light,” she says, “soulmates aren’t real.”

The soulmate phenomenon is one of the greatest medical mysteries of all time. Not for a lack of literature: the abundance of evidence regarding soulmatehood stretches into Mesopotamian records. But it makes no sense. There are seven billion people alive. The chance of finding your soulmate, even without considering age and gender and all that, is almost nothing.
But it does happen. Misa knows, because her parents are soulmates.
To be honest, she’d had her doubts before. They screamed at each other, sometimes threw things, kept alternating being kicked out to cheap motels. But they always made up, in the end. Made up… passionately. Misa learned to put on music to drown it out.
“What does it mean?” she asked curiously one day, pointing at the bloodred ruby embedded in the hollow of her mom’s throat.
“It means he’s strangling me,” her mom said. “What do you want for breakfast?”
After her dad had gotten back from the motel she’d asked him instead.
“Well, Misa,” he said. “Your mother’s the worst bitch alive, and I’m the only one who can handle her right.” He touched his thumb to the ruby printed on his throat, fondness tugging at his smile. “We’re the same person. That’s what it means.”
Misa hadn’t really gotten it, back then. Why would two of the same people fight? If she could make another Misa she’d do it in a heartbeat. That way Other-Misa could do the chores for her.
…On second thought, maybe she did get it.
But anyway. Somewhere, subconsciously, she’d always doubted. Misa was very up-to-date on the latest celebrity scandals, and she knew how easy matching tattoos were to fake.
But now she is staring through the crack in the closet. There is blood pooling on the floor, a dull red compared to the bright, shining light glowing from her dad’s throat. She stares and stares and stares until it fades to the white color of a scar.
“Miss,” says the officer on the phone, “Miss! Stay calm, we’re almost there—”
“Don’t fucking bother,” Misa says, and hangs up.
Her mom had stumbled like she’d been stabbed when her ruby went white. Snapped at Misa to hide and call the police, then picked up a kitchen knife. Misa isn’t sure when the burglar whoever-it-was dragged her dad’s dead body to rest in her line of view, but she knows his throat had still been glowing until it wasn’t.
She’ll never doubt soulmates are real again.

Light is seventeen years old and the world is falling apart.
Soulmates, he scoffs to himself, whenever the topic comes up in discussion. Akasato is rambling about his girlfriend again and how they’re fated to be. Light isn’t jealous. Getting attached is the worst thing that could ever happen to someone.
“I swear, man, the way you talk about her I think your tattoo should’ve been a ball and chain,” Yamamoto says.
Akasato groans. ��She’s not that bad! She sent me chocolates!”
“The same ones she gave that basketball guy?” Light laughs.
“Don’t remind me, I’ll kill him, I swear,” Akasato says. Grinning. Murder is so out of the realm of possibility it’s funny. “And anyway, she’s coming over for Christmas.”
“Oh, whoa,” Yamamoto says. “Happy for you.”
“Yeah, congrats,” Light adds.
His mom wasn’t lying, exactly. The chances of stumbling across your soulmate are effectively zero. There’s studies suggesting that it’s higher than random chance, that most found soulmates live in or around the same timezone as you, but he’s pretty sure they’re cherry-picking.
It’s much easier to fall in love with someone and make them your soulmate instead, his mom had explained to him softly, rubbing her wrist. Much easier to get a tattoo with them, rather than hoping it’ll show up on your skin at first touch. Maybe even more romantic. Your dad and I love each other, Light. Who cares if he’s not perfect? He’s good enough for me.
The last time a teacher called Light’s work good enough was in fifth grade. Light had sabotaged his swivel chair afterwards and he’d had to take a week off.
“Thanks, guys,” Akasato says. “Hey, Yamamoto, who’re you having over for Christmas?”
“Oh, you know, the usual.”
“Sending cards to girls again?” Light puts in.
Yamamoto snorts. “Not all of us are lucky enough to be like Aka-chan here—”
“You take that back—”
“—and find their soulmate in middle school,” Yamamoto finishes. “I’m going to keep trying.”
“You know you actually have to make contact with them for it to happen, right?” Light asks.
“Obviously!”
“Yagami’s right,” Akasato says, pleased he’s not the topic of conversation anymore. “Are you sure you’ve got enough game for that, Yamamoto? I think you’d faint if a girl held your hand.”
“I’ve had girlfriends!”
“Sure, sure,” Light says. They all laugh. It’s nice having friends. “Oh, here’s my stop.”
“See ya!”
Light enters the house. Gives his mother his test grades, lets her coo, then slips into his room and heads for the drawer.
There it is. Untouched.
Who needs soulmates, he thinks, when you can be the god of the new world?

Misa sits cross-legged on a repurposed picnic blanket spread awkwardly over the wet dirt. She sticks one rose each into the soil in front of her parents’ graves.
“Hey, mom, dad,” she starts. “I’m not gonna come back for a while.”
The graves are silent. They have been for almost a year now. One rose almost falls over; Misa hurriedly reaches to fix it.
“I’m going to move to Kanto,” she declares. “I’ll catch him no matter what I do. I know which jail he’s in already. The prosecutor told me.”
She sticks the rose back in with some violence. It droops. All the other ones she’s brought have wilted — obviously, because their stems were cut ages ago. She can’t plant seeds, though. That would require someone watering them.
“I’ll ask for a visit and get him to attack me,” she continues. “And then I’ll stab him, and I’ll scream, and I’ll tell everyone it was self-defense. What do you think, Mom?” She’d always been better at lying than Dad.
“Good idea? I knew it.” Misa hops up, brushing the dirt off the picnic blanket. “I’ll start getting ready soon. Next month, I think. Definitely.”

“Ah,” says the voice from the television screen. “I had to test this, just in case, but I-I never thought it would actually happen… Kira. It seems you can kill people without having to be there in person.”
Light freezes.
He was wrong, he realizes, for possibly the first time in his life. He was wrong. Someone’s out there.
“Try to kill me,” L’s saying, and Light can hear the smirk even through unknowable kilometers of distance. “What’s wrong? Go ahead! Can’t you do it?”
“You bastard,” Light hisses through his teeth, feeling so alive he could cry.
He shouts I am justice at the same time L does, grinning, half-manic, and doesn’t even realize he’s clutching his wrist.

“Please,” says the stalker in the shadows, “please, Misa-Misa, I just need to — I just need to touch —”
Misa backs away. This is a dead end alleyway. She should never have gone to the convenience store at night. Her and her empty refrigerator and her stupid hungry stomach. There’s a fire escape, maybe if she jumps—
“Can you even fucking hear me?” The stalker shouts.
Misa nods, automatic, and wonders if she should scream. No one’s around at this time of day. Who would even miss her?
“Just one touch,” the stalker says. “Come on!”
And then in a flash he’s running for her. Misa turns and sprints and leaps for the fire escape — and misses it. She collapses in a heap.
Her stalker has his hand on her cheek. She jerks away. Of all the fucking days she could have forgotten her pepper spray.
“It’s not you,” the stalker says, abruptly sounding like he’s about to cry. “How could it not be you?”
“Get away from me,” Misa says, stumbling to her feet.
“All the interviews I watched,” the stalker says. “I have all your magazines, Misa-Misa!”
“I haven’t been in that many issues,” says whoever is operating Misa’s vocal cords as she calculates her chances. She has to catch him by surprise, it’s the only opportunity she’s got, shove him and run—
Oh. He has a knife. Never mind that, then.
“At least we can die together,” the stalker says — or — tries to say. Misa watches in shock as his mouth clicks shut and he… turns away?
And then he clutches his chest, and he falls.
Misa stays there, sucks in a few more breaths of cold air, then runs.

Judging from these panels, would it mean that there's no other yorishima exorcist that's still alive (since natori said that the yorishima family "was once" a big name, past tense) in the canon timeline, and that the yorishima we know probably ended his family's exorcism business for good by retiring himself? If so, was the reason tied to the youkai living in his left arm, or is there another cause? And when exactly did he retire— was it before or during seiji and shuuichi's high school days, which was why his left arm appeared with the thick bandages when he gave them the loquats in the anime, but he still lived in the estate during that time, or was it after the two became legal adults, which lined up somewhat with him moving into his forest home, abandoning his family estate in favor of living in isolation?

And, speaking of retirement, I wonder if we'll ever know why midorikawa told us that the takis were "famous" (which presumedly meant they were strong enough to be well-known) as occult diviners, since tooru herself only ever mentioned what their previous family business entails, and never about their status in the exorcism community? We don't really need this extra bit if she wanted to further establish how tooru has an aptitude for spell-casting, either. Again, there's another "strong" family (whose members are still alive in canon) that went into retirement, but did the taki family lost their power because the ability to see (if they were needed for diviners) disappeared for at least the last three generations (if we assumed that tooru and isamu's parents couldn't see youkai too), or was it due to another reason? How close was shinichiro (tooru and isamu's grandpa) to the matobas that even the current clan head came to pay his respects during his sixth death anniversary; was his relationship with seiji's father strictly resolved around exorcism business, or was anything else involved? Does tooru herself doesn't fully understand the prowess her family once had, hence why seiji was the one who told takashi (and us readers) about it? What would this tiny bit of lore mean for tooru with it revealed this late into the manga, when tooru herself only talked sparsely about her ancestors in previous chapters?

Sylus enjoys a karaoke bar, especially if he's got access to you for a duet. You tease him but you'll always join him, hanging onto his arm and letting loose, and he sometimes falters over the words because he's too busy watching your face.
Still, this is good too. You've set up the game system that the doctor bought for his base, presenting it with a sigh. 'You won't know the right one.'
He'd been a little insulted, but he'd acquiesced, in the end the doctor knows gaming better than he does. It's never appealed to him, and he's never had real time to try. A sing-a-long game is loading up, yelling out 'let's sing' loudly from the speaker system.
You'd presented it to him with the doctor, beaming, "You'll like this one, I promise!"
The fish had groaned from the sofa, "Why do we all have to suffer the crow's crooning?"
As much as you've teased him for being out of tune, you've always encouraged him. He can't count how many times you've asked him to hum for you. Lay against his chest, and unable to sleep for nightmares.
The reason for the at-home karaoke session, are the cocktails that Luke has decided he wants to try making. Kieran is his primary test dummy, and if anything doesn't make him spit it straight back out. You're trying them.
It's ill advised… Sylus knows you're not a light weight, but he does know you and the twins can get competitive. It feels like it's only moments before you start doing shots together, and if that happens he's bound to get dragged in, and as quick healing as he is, he doesn't fancy driving anyone anywhere. Nor does he want to get into a taxi with someone he doesn't trust. Not with you and the twins.
He needs you safe.
He also blames you for Luke’s new hobby, you’d showed them some movies, made comments about how stylish a good bartender is, (He hadn’t filed that information away, to practice. At all.), and Luke had taken that as a challenge.
“It can’t be that hard.”
“Yeah! You can do it bro!”
You’d laughed and not thought anything of it. They’d gone out, and returned with… boxes.
Then raided his alcohol supply.
He’d dragged them both back by the scruff of the neck when they went for the very expensive top shelf. In no world were they mixing that with… was that moonshine? Where did they even get moonshine from?
He doesn’t see you drunk often, there are times you’re out in busy places because you feel you have to attend, and he’s seen you drink then to soften the anxiety and stress. You always call someone to be there then, drunk you is far more willing to rely on others. He also has seen you drink when you feel safe, has carried you on his arm more than once in those situations.
You apologise but there’s no need, especially when he gets to see the embarrassed but enamoured look on your face as he holds you in one arm. Your fingers drifting over the veins in his bicep, with a look he can only describe as hungry. He flexes a little more than he needs to on those occasions.
(There was one time you’d made a comment about beef clod, and he had truly not known how to respond.)
He can see you getting to that point now, you’re trying something green that you and Kieran are sipping from the same glass with separate straws. Luke is taking his turn at the microphone, singing something about what he wants for Christmas. Sylus is unsure if the radioactive green drink is good for either of you, but you don’t look sick, still. He’s wary, and flicks your forehead. As you put a hand to the targeted area, pulling away with an offended ‘Oi’, he grabs the glass and sips from your straw.
“Aww, Boss come on.”
It’s… not as bad as he expected, but he can’t imagine drinking it for fun.
Whether his taste buds are ‘broken’ like you’ve claimed before, and its somehow worse than he tastes, he still doesn’t feel good about putting it back in either your’s or Kieran’s hands. So he downs it.
Wrinkling his nose and pushing the glass away.
Before you can grab another concoction, now that Luke is back and shoving something else onto his brother, (He’s going to have to hide the key to the liquor cabinet he thinks, if this becomes a long standing hobby for them.), he pulls you over to the karaoke machine. “It’s our turn kitten, I’m owed a song for saving you from a terrible fate.”
Your tongue is out at him, but you stumble over grabbing his arm to steady yourself, and pick up the controller to find something you both know well enough to get through it with little effort.
His song repertoire has grown substantially since you’ve reentered his life, he feels confident that anything you sing to often he has memorised. Catalogued away to think about on nights you’re not here to sing for him.
When you’re satisfied, lining up a particular choice, you thrust the microphone into his hand, that’s not currently steadying you at the waist.
You look right at him when the song starts, familiar with some things enough to sing them blindfolded, and as tipsy as you are, with your voice wavering a little, he’s as starstruck as he always is.
“And I’d give up forever to touch you, ‘Cause I know that you feel me somehow, You’re the closest to heaven that I’ll ever be, And I don’t want to go home right now.”
There’s moments in his life, where Sylus wonders if he blinks, will you disappear? A fragile illusion on a wishful soul. That someone, somewhere has truly seen into him and seen something worth adoring and loving. He thinks you are easy to love, there can be no doubt that you are worthy without the need to earn it.
“And all I can taste is this moment, And all I can breathe is your life.”
You have reminded him, again and again that you love him, that he does not need to pay for it, or gift for it. That everything that is offered is freely given, and wholehearted. That there is nothing to earn. It is not a transaction, no relationship should be. You do not keep score, and you would rather he did not either.
“And sooner or later it’s over, I just don’t want to miss you tonight.”

(i haven't read Whole Cake in a while, and i never really watched it, so bear with me)
I'd love to write a fic with Usopp on Whole Cake. it'd be sooo fucking long and i'd need to refresh myself on the entire arc, but god i'd probably be so satisfied when it's done. specifically for having brought a single moment in my head to life, but we'll get to that.
On Zou, he insists to be taken along on the Sanji rescue team and has worked himself up with a whole bunch of very good reasons as to why he should go there instead of helping in Wano, but of course Luffy just immediately accepts with a "yeah sure"
With Whole Cake, I think he'd be flipping between having fun as part of the idiot trio/quartet (Luffy, Chopper, Carrot), and being terrified with Nami. There wouldn't be that many differences in the arc as a whole, though; some things would be easier/better and some things would be worse- I don't necessarily think Usopp's presence would be overall an advantage or disadvantage, just different. Like, major events would stay mostly the same, but little details would change and maybe those little details would build to a far more drastic change-
for example, maybe one of Big Mom's kids considers themself a great sniper and wants a match with Usopp, or is motivated to work harder because Usopp is around and they want to take him out and boast about it. Maybe it means Sunny takes more damage than canon, or maybe Usopp's help means less damage to Sunny. (idk if i'd really do smth like this, but it's just an example)

I do know that, despite his penchant for talking and rambling, I'd probably have Usopp be dead silent after his initial shock when Sanji fights Luffy. Everything about that is the same, except Usopp is just watching Sanji the whole time- not panicking, not moving, and not speaking. He doesn't say a word the entire time, doesn't even make a sound, and that, along with Luffy's words and Nami's begging, stick with Sanji.
(Usopp is thinking of his own fight with Luffy in Water 7, he's partially wondering if this was what it was like- if it was this painful to watch from the sidelines- and partially knowing he doesn't have to say a word, because he knew, like he knew back then, that it didn't matter what was said. It wasn't quite the same, but he could tell in the way Sanji moved, in the way he spoke and held himself, that he was putting on a front, trying to be brave in all the wrong ways. Usopp didn't say a word to Sanji because there was nothing he could say that Sanji himself didn't already know. Should've known. And his quiet, direct stare, was more than enough.)
the singular moment i really wanna write, is a scene where Sanji is apologizing for dragging them into his mess- either during the big meeting in Bege's castle or some other time- and Usopp's like "I'll do what you can't, you do what I can't, right?" and Sanji pauses, a little confused, until he remembers Enies Lobby and a stupid mask and cape and-
and tears are gathering in his eyes now, fuck, but he laughs a little. It sounds wet and his face is itchy and they're surrounded by tentative allies, but he- he laughs again and he says, "Fuck, you remembered that?"
Usopp shrugs, a little smile on his face. "They were some wise words from a wise man."
Sanji laughs a third time. "You think I'm wise?"
And they banter a little more before Bege tells them to quit it since they're on a time constraint or something. Quietly, Usopp will ask, "It-it helps. On bad days. And I figured, 'what's a worse day than this?' Ah, not that you getting married would ever be bad per se-"
"Usopp," Sanji says, looking more relaxed and settled. He smiles fondly and grabs his friend in a one armed hug, crushing him to his side. "Thanks."
And yeah, don't remember much beyond that, except the whole "hiding and then busting out of the cake" bit, which would mean Usopp in a cute little tuxedo or smth- maybe with a fedora aaaaaa <- loves fedoras- helping out with the fighting and eventually sailing with everyone to Wano.
He would be so distressed about fixing up Sunny now that the whole thing with Whole Cake is over. Maybe there'd be a gag about him promising Franky to take good care of Sunny while they were gone and being confident, after being Franky's tinkering partner and learning from him over time, that he could handle minor repair work much better than he did the first time around with Merry. And so when he finally takes in all the very-not-minor repairs he has to do, he's certain Franky is gonna strangle him for not keeping his promise. Probably also try to write in some nostalgic 'repairman Usopp' vibes from pre-Water 7.
Also something something, Sanji, wanting to do more for the crew bc he still feels guilty about Whole Cake, decides to take it upon himself to help Usopp not fall into a whole anxiety spiral about the ship. In turn, Usopp ends up helping Sanji not feel so guilty- usually by handing his own words back to him on a silver platter. And, yknow, having the two of them bonding and being buddies again like they so rarely get to be in canon nowadays qwq

maybe like four blogs ago i wrote the most insane book-focused meta about will as john the baptist and starling as a sacrificial christ figure who becomes one with god in a way john cannot and is absorbed in the process of her apotheosis—but the point is the story is about her and will’s only the forerunner, the prologue. like, i love hannibal the show and will graham is my favorite unhinged wet dog, but i’m still a little bitter starling’s story was dissected and given predominately to a male character instead of fuller just coming up with something unique for will and hannibal.
what’s most interesting to me about them has always been will’s fundamental inability to handle the work that he was asked to do and that everyone knew this but they kept asking because he’s so Special—whereas starling could handle it, being clever and hard-working and exceptional at compartmentalization, but was never allowed to do so because she wouldn’t compromise herself to get ahead. it’s stings because gender is precisely why they ended up where they did; the horror and violence of gender is so thematically significant and inextricable to the series for me. will caught hannibal almost by accident in the books. hannibal caught starling not by devising a trap for her or gaslighting her (that came later) but simply because the systemic misogyny she faced pushed her out of her career and her life, and her contempt for the corruption of system grew and grew and crystallized inside her until she was forced to make a choice—shoot the dirty cop or let hannibal be eaten by the pigs—and in making it she revealed the truth of herself: that she believed she was above the law, above the broken system, above the men who uphold it. that choice drove her straight to hannibal. he didn’t have to do anything at all to isolate her. she came for him; he just had to wait.

yknow what minor transient detail abt s4 is fun to me? prior to john's reveal, noel apparently assumes the KIY to be a totally unfamiliar character to them both. he pauses his story to give background info on him ("he rules the dreamlands, he's a master manipulator, etc") in a way he doesn't with other stuff. he points out yellow like "that's the bitch btw. if you were curious." which is. like he knows they were in the dreamlands. i think he knows or at least assumes they were in the pits for a while given they ran into lorick. what does he think they were doing there. just. passing through??

I cannot begin to describe my level of confusion rn
#I’m reading Nona the ninth right but then I decided to reread the other two books before finishing Nona cause I was listening to#the audio book and I have trouble following along closely so anyways I reread it and everything started to make sense right but then#I finished the epilogue of Harrow and never realized there’s whole ass chapters after it??? cause I was listening and heard like appendix#and didn’t want to listen to all the definitions so I paused it and never looked back thinking that was the end#so my ass has spent the last half of Nona the ninth not even knowing if gideons body survived I mean I hoped but I didn’t know#I thought that Nona could only be harrow no confusion on the question whatsoever the only question being what soul will inhabit it#I had hoped that it was harrows body and that gideons was somewhere with blood of Eden that we just didn’t know yet#now I’m so confused as to what physical body Nona has and I’m going to have to reread and not listen to the first half so I can know what#what in the world is going on#please no spoilers#but here are my ideas for how this will end:#nona is harrows body brought to Camilla curtesy prrya#Gideon and Harrow will inevitably surface or they’ll find a way to draw them out#everyone will be very sad when Nona leaves#also the fact that narrow the ninth ends with it saying Gideon will return in nona but not harrow????#but I could’ve sworn it was harrows body she was in#I could be wrong though cause I read nona without knowing anything about the Judith files which is just insane#but also I feel like that’s the way it’s intended to be read y’all get new readers to read up until#guys get new readers to stop reading after hot sauce and Nona talk about both having people in the park that night#I’m only mildly joking#harrow the ninth
