Your knowledge of medieval stuff is really impressive! You said in the tags of that ask you answered that you majored in literature? I would love to hear more about your passion for medieval literature and just medieval times in general. Did it start with Kingdom of Heaven or were you interested in it long before watching the film?

I did my BA with a major in German literature and linguistics and a minor in English lit. For my MA (which I'm almost finished with save for my thesis defence), I switched to English full-time. My interest in medieval literature is really something that came with my studies - I've always had a general interest in history and read lots of historical fiction while in school, but I'd had basically no exposure to medieval texts (or the knowledge to engage somewhat meaningfully with them) until I had to take my first compulsory "Introduction to Medieval Literature" class at uni. From then on, I just kind of fell in love with the subject. We had a great prof - a really cool older lady who gave the most engaging lectures and with whom I later took seminars on topics like the medieval idea of monsters or animal depictions in chivalric romance.

Within all things medieval, the area that perhaps fascinates me the most is medievalism studies, which is a sort of sub-discipline of medieval studies that investigates, broadly speaking, the reception and depiction of the Middle Ages as well as medieval texts and topics in post-medieval media. Idk why it had to be that field in particular, but there's just something so beautiful in finding parallels and continuities between our world and the medieval one, especially since misconceptions about the Middle Ages are still so prevalent. Unsurprisingly, I wrote both of my dissertations on such medieval/modern overlaps: In my BA thesis I looked into the portrayal and function of mentor-mentee relationships in medieval literature and modern adolescent fiction (lots of commonalities there, interestingly enough!), whereas in my MA diss I focused on the construction of dystopian scenarios in recent British Arthurian fiction and how these respond not only to the older Arthurian material but also to present-day environmental and political anxieties. (Sounds a bit complicated but it makes sense, I promise.)

Perhaps this is why KoH has had such a chokehold on me these past 4 years. It's such a flawed piece of media that it makes me want to dig my teeth into it, in an academic as well as a fic-writing sense. There are so many moments in it that could be right out of a chivalric romance, yet also so many others where the film blows its pretence to historicity to all hell; there are so many interesting characters who only scratch at the surface of the historical figures behind them, and simply so much wasted potential. It's just ... ahhh.

The funny thing is that my growing interest in medieval literature kind of coincided with me discovering KoH, which in turn made me dig even deeper into the research side of things (a vicious circle lol). I think I wrote another post on this about a year ago, but me discovering - or rather re-discovering - Kingdom of Heaven was basically the result of the following chain reaction: I somehow stumbled upon an old novel covering the same events as KoH (Graham Shelby's The Knights of Dark Renown) > something in that book's depiction of Raymond of Tripoli scratched my brain in the right place > I investigated further and found KoH > I saw that skrunkly Mr Irons was part of the cast and decided I had to watch it immediately. In such matters I'm a simple girl - nothing will incite me to watch a film more than an old history man being hot 😂

And then half-way through the film I remembered I'd actually seen it before - with my former best friend during the early years of secondary school when she was obsessed (and by that I mean obsessed) with Orlando Bloom and made me watch literally every film with him that she could get her hands on. Which was a good thing only insofar as it made me discover Lord of the Rings. Though in hindsight it's very funny because she clearly intended for me to join her in her Orlando insanity, whereas confused 11-year-old me instead stared at Aragorn and Tiberias like this: 😳. Yes, I've always had impeccable taste, obviously.

And thus, in the spring of the year of our Lord 2020, I entered my KoH era, and so far the brainrot is still thriving.

I do wonder, though, how many people in the fandom have a similar background? The handful of people that I know or have interacted with seem to skew that way, with mostly history- or literature-related fields of study, but I wonder how representative they are of the overall fandom 🤔

listen i am geralt of rivia hater number one but one thing i actually CANNOT stand is when the fandom mischaracterizes him. took one look at this man who speaks very straight-forwardly and matter-of-fact and is a little recalcitrant with his words sometimes and went "haha he communicates in grunts! man who only says 'hm'!" and then won't even write him to speak in full fucking sentences. hello???? hello???????? yes the netflix show was a bad influence on everybody because they were trying too hard to depict geralt as a stoic manly badass but we CANNOT let that distract us from the REAL thing to make fun of geralt for. which are his Constant Unprovoked Monologues

The  sun  was  just  about  to  set  by  the  time  Hu  Tao  had  slipped  into  the  Angel's  Share  tavern.  Sure  it  wasn't  like  the  teahouses  Liyue  provided  where  one  could  enjoy  an  operatic  and  storytelling  performance  every  now  and  then.  But  it  still  had  a  quaint  comradery  about  it.  Even  the  redhaired bartender  who  seemed  to  be  busy  for  the  first  few  moments  was  kind  enough  to  take  notice  of  her eventually.

Hold  on,  was  he  staring  at  her?  Was  she  really  that  out  of  place  among  the  patrons?  Regardless  she  made  her  way  up  toward  the  counter.

"That  certainly  is  a  kind  offer,"  she  remarked  with  a  soft  grin.

"How  about  a  trade  to  make  things  fair,  no?"  Her  hand  reached  into  her  coat  pocket  pulling  out  a  thin  piece  of  paper.  Black  in  color  except  for  gold  ink  displaying  an  emblem  of  her  beloved  funeral  parlor.  Written  across  the  front  was  a  discounted  promise  of  a  cadavar  collection  service.

"I'm  afraid  I'm  out  of  the  usual  'buy  one,  get  one  free  deals'.  So  I  truly  hope  this  suffices"  the  director  added.

Hiii I'm going nuts rn trying to find a specific fic - it's an office setting, vegaspete centric, Pete worked for Kinn and Vegas had a rival company. Pete winds up working for Vegas but he almost gets fired for working for the rival company first. Vegas and Pete meet at a mask night in a bdsm club at the beginning I think 🤔 if anyone has any idea what it was called or who wrote it I would be so grateful!

Hmmmm, i'll admit the premise seems familiar but I'm drawing a blank! It's definitely not something I've recc'd before but the mask night at the BDSM club both narrows it down and doesn't - you'd be surprised at how often VegasPete ends up at mask night at the bdsm club.

So once again I'm going to have to pass this one on to my followers to help track down - If anyone can think of which fic this might be, please leave a link in the replies or send me an ask!

Okay, so here's a little thing I noticed. Not sure if others have noticed this too but, hey! Why not spread the good word. Also, this thought contains spoiler talk as well so heads up if you wanna avoid those! Will warn when it happens. Ahem. Here is a sprite of Aoi I just snatched for demonstration.

It's the school emblem! Or like, that part of it that's in Monokuma's eye! Kinda forgot what it's meant to actually be on the emblem itself ngl. Like.. is it am abstract wing??? Not sure. I shrug like Aoi.

This doesn't seem like much bit it also got me thinking. This is where the spoilers come in so run while you can!!

First of all, during the tragedy and the brain wiping of the students and their memories of previously being in the school, this would mean that she had these on, right? Right before shit hit the fan? Like, when Junko did her junking around and all, Aoi would have had this get up on during that. Or, maybe not. Perhaps there is a chance that Junko put her in different clothes? Like, she intentionally picked out these shorts for Aoi as some elaborate trolling method and planted them their on her person. And, maybe she'd know that the chances of them questioning and noticing this is low but, she did it anyway for her own amusement. Also, if Junko DID redress them all before the killing game, she was really going all out with this. Very conniving of her. Maybe it was to make sure it convincing that they had never been at Hopes Peak and feed into that lie. Something along those lines. Also messed up too. Wonder if she did it herself or had Mukuro do it though... Not sure Also, now I'm curious what tools she used for memory wiping everyone though that's another question. Not sure if I'd wanna know anyway! Know for a fact that Kyoko took the longest though with her being the Ultimate Detective and her dad being the headmaster of the whole dang school! Poor Kyoko. Or... hmmm. What is the likely hood that these shorts are from the school and she got them while being IN the school itself pre-tragedy era or like... did she preorder them or something? Could a student preorder clothes from Hopes Peak High School??? Or did Aoi wear this outfit on her way to Hopes Peak or did she have MOST of the outfit on and the "Junko planted the Hopes Peak shorts on" theory happened at the same time? Or, ooh! Maybe Junko used some. She may be the Ultimate Despair and the Ultimate Analyst (think that was in Danganronpa Zero manga??) but maybe she was able apply those skills into designing shorts that perfectly matched the ones Aoi wore to school pre-tragedy but JUST with that added emblem on it to troll? So many questions! This really does makes me think. Like, imagine in an alternate timeline. Could this be evidence of some sort of how they all used to be in this school? Like, when discover that they all used to go to Hopes Peak and that they had their memories wiped, could someone be like "Hey! This is all mad and crazy and all but look at Aoi's shorts" or something? Does that make sense? Maybe? Makes me wonder too. If Kyoko was on her A-game and not struggling with the fact that she got hit the hardest with her memory loss, would she notice this detail on Aoi's shorts or like, how long would it take her to notice? I'm not a detective and I saw this after all! Again, so many questions of mine! I swear though. I dunno how much this makes sense. Though, this small detail on Aoi's sprites kept coming back to me and I have finally figured out how to word it all!

I just read your constructicon bad takes post and thank you so much I agree with each and every point. Especially about that ship.

I will say I personally go back and forth on having all of them being from a white collar background- I definitely agree that they’re all intelligent and have specializations, but diversity of backgrounds and nuance makes them more fun to play with. I know plenty of highly skilled people who don’t have traditional education.

I said that because I didn't want to make it a headcanon fest; it would feel like I was making a "people don't view them the way I personally do" point instead of a "people are fundamentally misinterpreting them."

But yeah, in my own fan continuity (which is just "G1 but the Constructicons are the main characters"), I do have them being informal workers and from poor backgrounds.

Only Long Haul (a suburbanite 🤢) and Scrapper (nepo-baby 🤮) are from wealthier backgrounds and had opportunities in early life to study.

Hook, Scavenger, and Bonecrusher come from impoverished places and had to do it the hard way; it didn't stop them from working (or Hook from becoming an actual licensed surgeon), but it does color the way they see the world. Bonecrusher specifically, I feel the need to say I write him as someone from a favela (you Americans call it ghettos, but it's not the same thing), so yes, his life was HELL ON CYBERTRON. (and he's black, but that's subtext.)

Hook and BC only got degrees when they joined the Decepticon faction (on duty), or else they literally couldn't work as officers... But not the same thing as going to college, right? (Hook had to infiltrate his way into the Autobot faction to get his surgeon specialization, but he did it lmao.)

ALSO, thanks for that last point. People with no formal training can STILL be professionals in their own area, and having traditional education does NOT make someone "smarter," which also pisses me off when some sheltered white teen goes forth to portray the Constructicons as dumb BECAUSE they are construction workers... GO TOUCH SOME GRASS AND MEET NEW PEOPLE!!!

Something I see frequently is fans wanting characters like Elle Greenaway or Nathan Harris to return as unsubs in Criminal Minds, which. I'll be completely honest, I hate the idea for a lot of the suggested characters because it feels so undeniably tragic and hopeless that someone will inevitably become a killer, even if they don't want to become one. Yes, a lot of the unsubs have some kind of tragic backstory, but the thing is that they're still awful people (excluding very very few). I feel like having previous characters return as the unsub paints this picture that you're unable to break the cycle of violence or that you're destined to become a monster, which is just such a honestly tragic message, especially for a show that's already pretty dark.

I'm not opposed to characters reappearing, but I'd much prefer that if those characters appeared again that it'd be in the vein of them having undergone some kind of healing and growth and be able to find themselves some kind of peace and satisfaction in where they are in life. Let them reappear, but don't transform them into monsters but a symbol of the healing and growth available to survivors and the other characters.
