Today's like yesterday...

@dduane is recovering from a really wicked IBS / lactose intolerance attack and I've been acting as medic & general helpmate, all while doing a Long John Silver impression after twisting my ankle when going downstairs in too much of a rush.

This is a PSA of sorts for others prone to IBS / lactose intolerance.

Something that's safe cold may not be safe after heating.

As far as we can make out, the cause of this attack was a processed smoked-cheese-with-ham, despite it giving no trouble before now.

Out of the fridge and sliced thin with crackers, great stuff. DD just took a Lactaid or similar to balance the presence of the milk products, and all was well.

On Sunday evening, however, she tried baking it in egg-enriched saffron-flavoured bread dough left over from making this loaf.

Those little round things are bite-sized sausages. Very good, too.

However, baking this cheese seems to have caused some sort of chemical change, as happens with cooking oil, or heat concentrated the milk proteins beyond acceptable levels.

Either way, even after taking her usual Lactaid precaution before eating a couple of slices, the IBS / lactose combo still hit DD like a hammer, and It Was Not Fun.

She's on the mend, though tired from lack of sleep (me too) and very achy from all the throwing-up, also vexed that there may be yet another food added to the increasingly long list of once-tasty things needing treated with extreme caution or avoided completely.

The problem is that she might now be sensitised against eating this cheese at any temperature, and there's only one way to find out.

As she's said more than once: "Every woman her own test-tube".

It's not as good a quote as the one about books and potato chips, but is just as accurate.

Hi, my name's Eliza, I have stage 3b breast cancer. I've come a long way, had a partial mastecomy and some lymph nodes removed, but my cancer is still really aggressive and scary. I have another hurdle coming up that is going to strain me and my family a lot since we're really poor... and that's radiation therapy.

My radiation therapy apps are going to be 5 days a week (mon-fri), for 4-5 weeks. The only place I can be seen is 1hr 15mins away...so that's a 2+ hour drive, every single day for weeks. We just can't afford the gas money for that, we're barely scrapping by as is...

alright so now that we've heard from the wonderful ms towel, my beloved, let me attempt to word this a little more eloquently:

the whole point of media is that it affects people in different ways. we may have very different opinions on an adaptation, but that is because we are different people who find ourselves better reflected in different ways.

as i've said before, it's downright inaccurate to assume that everyone must agree with your take, or that your take is superior to another human being's.

berating someone for their personal opinion, whether it be on a character, a scene, a song, a ship, or anything else is really disappointing. personally my closest friend and i disagree on a ship that's very important to them, but it's actually quite easy to not tell her she's a fake fan just because we have differing opinions.

'the outsiders' is a story about found family, and about teens failing to cope with their differences. maybe sit and think about that for a second before you start threatening and harassing people.

again, i'm aware that this is aimed at a minority of the community. thank you to everyone who has reblogged any of the psas that i have posted, it means a lot to me that there are other people who agree that this negativity is not welcome or encouraged here.

This is mostly off-topic for the blog, but maybe someone else can learn from my mistakes.

You know how I mentioned a few times over the past couple of weeks that I didn't have access to the spreadsheet I use to maintain the blog, because my PC had died? Well here's what happened.

I had a long USB cable plugged into the front of my PC tower because I was charging my phone. At some point, I had removed the phone but left the USB cable plugged in.

The loose end of the USB cable fell off my desk, where it hit the metal heating/cooling vent cover on the wall. Electricity surged and arced from the cable to the vent, seeking ground through the ductwork and killing the computer at the same time. I have enough hardware knowledge to know how to change a CMOS battery and shove a RAM stick into a desktop PC, but not enough to know if the surge killed the power supply, the motherboard, something else, or all of it.

The good news is, I finally have a new PC with better stats, and my solid-state drive was undamaged, so I didn't lose any data.

So that's my PSA, I guess! Don't leave any loose cables plugged into your devices, especially near a vent!

Lightning is natural. Opium, therefore heroin and opiate drugs are derived from poppies. Cinnamon oil will burn your skin. Lilies are toxic to cats and will cause organ failure. Activated charcoal will neutralize your prescription medications and literally anything else in your system. St. John's Wort will destroy your serotonin production and mess with your happiness threshold if it DOESNT KILL YOU FIRST.

The card service I use says they ship worldwide and, while it might take a bit longer for you to receive your card depending on what country you live in, the cards will get mailed to whatever address you provide, domestic or foreign. Last year I mailed/emailed a total of 111 cards to the United Kingdom, Canada, United States, Brazil, Romania, Poland, Australia, Germany, India, Japan, and New Zealand!
