Introducing the Garner Gladiators! Stacy, Mark, and son Ollie all took part in the Nuclear races this weekend and absolutely smashed it!!!! Stacy did two races this weekend, totalling 25k with 172 obstacles, and in training she sometimes says “I’m not fit”?!?! Whatever 😂 Ollie, aged only 13, took part in his first adult race, managing an impressive 9k, being his furthest distance to date, and taking on 67 obstacles! What a great role model for his peers. How many other 13 year olds did something as exciting as that today? Mark conquered a phenomenal challenge - 27.9 miles, over 300 obstacles, and we’re awaiting confirmation that he was top 10 in his age category! As Mental Health Awareness week draws to a close I thought I’d ask people whether they felt they suffered stress in their day to day lives, and how well you feel you cope with it? Also, what ways do you find of keeping on top of it? For me running is key, and often a good run with friends helps to create the much needed feel-good endorphins! 😄 Here’s a link to a test you can do to see how stressed you are - https://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/your-mental-health/stress-test I’m always saying this to clients, but exercise of any form is great for mental wellbeing, so if you’re having a bad day try and squeeze in some form of activity, even if it’s just a 10 minute walk around the block in the fresh air. Hopefully this post will motivate my fellow running friends, and show them that some solid training pays off in terms of getting quicker! The picture on the left is of a tempo run I did 3 years ago, and I remember how proud I was of that average pace at the time!!! It felt so hard, and I was literally puffing like a steam locomotive 😂 The one on the right is today - same distance but probably slightly less effort. I’m often very hard on myself and am always thinking “come on kelly, must get faster in order to get to sub 3 marathon pace”, but sometimes it’s good to step back and see how far we’ve come. Rob achieved something special at the weekend - 40 miles of running with 400 obstacles along the way!!! I run marathons, but the thought of this fills me with horror 😂 Such a long way, and such a lot of strength endurance needed for all the obstacles! Rob has managed to train for this alongside a very busy family life, and is testimony to how anything can be achieved if we have the drive and determination! How many of you eat enough iron? I’ve recently accelerated my running training, and the new regime has left me obviously lethargic, but I entered my meals into @myfitnesspal to see how I was doing. I always eat at least 5 bits of fruit and veg and eat a well balanced nutritious diet. I was however still quite low on iron, which hasn’t been helping my energy levels I’m sure, so am making a concerted effort to up it now! I’d be interested to know what my B12 levels are too...🧐 Today I’ve had lots of greens, and have a healthy snack and dinner lined up, but also had a @hollandandbarrett multivitamin and iron supplement to help me get what I need while I fine-tune my food. I’m so pleased with tonight’s training!!! This was set 2 of 3x 1k reps, and I managed to run the second set faster 😊 First time I’ve managed to stay well under 6min/mile pace. First set was 6:07 average, and I doubted whether I had more in the tank, but had some talented male runners to chase down 😂 My form is coming on leaps and bounds too and my stats from tonight are my best yet! The hard work is paying off! This morning I ran 8 miles with friends at 7:35 pace, and it felt awful, and I was dreading tonight’s reps. But it goes to show that sometimes it’s worth persevering, as our legs can perform so differently at opposite ends of the day! Throw back Thursday!!! The run on the left is from last May, and today I ran the identical route to get a comparison. Almost identical average pace, but last year I classed this as tempo and puffed like a train - today it felt wonderful and far less huffing and puffing! Natures gorgeous gym this morning! Who needs to be cooped up inside on a day like today? I met my client a few minute from her house on the side of this field, and just took a pair of dumbbells and an exercise mat, and away we went! Upper body strength work with shuttle runs between exercises. I decided quite a long time ago that I wasn’t running London this year due to my winter achilles injury, and the effect it had on my training. I’m quite sad about it, but I wasn’t going to be fit enough to do my championship place justice, so PB can wait until 2019. However, I decided that I’d instead concentrate on short speedy runs for the next few months, and ran my first 5k race of the year tonight. Not my fastest, but I’m feeling really happy with the result. 😊 Ground contact time was the best it’s ever been plus the longest stride length ever too - finally feel like I’m back! Super chuffed with my @saucony Kinvaras, and thanks again for gifting them to me following the National Running Show. They felt so lovely and light!!! I am so proud of this guy!!! @jonny.wark has finally smashed out a sub 4 time at the Brighton Marathon!!! 🙌 He was the first person to respond to my advert for running plans, and had the full gold package, which looked at all aspects of his running including his nutrition and general conditioning. Stuart has worked so hard, and has juggled marathon training around a busy work and family life, but has been so committed and focussed. And it shows!!! Great training session today with Tony Bacon! We hit the track for a change for a progressive 5k. Tony’s seemingly effortless 5k time is my lung busting 1500m pace 😂 A very naturally talented runner! I am so proud of these ladies today! They’ve both completed the inaugural #londonlandmarks Half Marathon and ran superbly! Stacey had ran Cambridge Half only 3 weeks ago, but was determined to get a PB. She did that, knocking 3 minutes off her previous time! I wish I could improve by 1 minute a week 😄 Kelly ran her first ever half marathon, ran the whole thing, and came in 6 minutes under her target time. Both got to run across the finish line with their gorgeous children - what great role models they are?!?!
