Today, Pope Benedict XVI announced that he will be resigning his reign as the leader of the Catholic world as of February 28th.
Why is this huge? Well beyond the fact that he is the Pope and leader of one of the largest religious groups known to man, he is the first Pope to resign in six centuries. Breaking tradition is frowned upon in Catholicism; let's see how they recover.

Lost in the Pages

Making a dollar off a life. Sounds deplorable right? Sounds like something far-fetched. Sounds like something out of a tasteless, low budget movie that leaves you feeling bad about your decision to watch it and furthermore the decisions made in the script. But this is life. This is our reality.
Stories like these are not farfetched, unfortunately. With a generation obsessed with getting shine on social media sites like YouTube and Instagram, shocking pictures and videos of obscene material are becoming more common place. The more obscene, the more hits you get; and who doesn't love hits on their bullshit 30 second clip? Who doesn't like seeing “likes” on some dumb shit they came across on their way to work? But to what levels will we sink until we realize that life is more precious than money, virtual friends or “likes” on your favorite media site? We focus so much on what exists virtually, we overlook the life staring right at us in reality.
The photographer’s reasoning for taking the picture was that he was trying to get the subway to stop by having his cellphone camera flash. Believable? Absolutely not. Have you seen the flash on these miniature phones nowadays? Did I mention that this asshole has a history of submitting pictures to the New York Post? Essentially, he saw shock value, mentally translated it to a position for financial gain and with a touch of a screen and a few burst shots, boom, transformed that helpless life into a few hundred bucks. Blood money. But this is not that type of blood money you risk going to jail for; it is that blood money that is accepted and “earned” by being a heartless, vile human being thinking of yourself before anyone else. That is what we as a society praise today right? Don’t believe me? Ask the photographer how much he got paid.
Is the problem the guy making money off this saddening situation or is the problem that this is just a microcosm of where we as a society are headed? We hear about it daily. If you don’t trust me, turn on the local news for 15 minutes tonight, read a newspaper or listen to the radio. And that is just LOCAL!  Maybe you can even open that app next to the Instagram icon labeled “News”. Every single day that passes there is something going on that makes the toughest of men realize the moral fiber of society is not improving and we as a people are slumming from what we have the potential to be. We can be better than this. We ARE better than this.
The victim of this story could have been saved. The photographer could have been in the newspaper for being a hero instead of getting a check for happy hour. Instead of celebrating heroics however, here we are again, another soul lost, another newspaper printed and another person stepping over the New York Post issue on the floor while on their way to work.  Another life lost within the pages of daily news.
Be good to one another. You can make a change, maybe even save a life.

"What They Do" - The Roots
Taking it back Sunday.
This specific Roots song is mad important to me because it introduced me to them. A couple of albums and numerous hits later, they are my favorite rap group out. Word to Clay Holbert for the introduction back in '96. Game changer.
Enjoy.

In more Hollywood news, Lenny Kravitz has been confirmed as the leading actor in the upcoming Marvin Gaye biopic. While many attempts to release a biopic of the legendary crooner have been made, this one is green lighted with secured music rights.
