Random hcs you have for Sirius?
Ah, Sirius Black, the walking contradiction. Yes, I have a few thoughts about him, even though I make fun of him a lot, deep down I appreciate him. This is going to be long, but that way I can compile it all in one post.
Walburga is a Scorpio like him, which is why they clashed so much. Scorpio is one of the most intense signs of the zodiac, and both Scorpio men and women are ruthless, but Scorpio women are the alphas of the zodiac and always dominate Scorpio men.
I like this idea because I think that deep down, the reason he and his mother got along so poorly is precisely because they had terribly similar personalities, the kind that don’t let anyone control them. Sirius wasn’t going to be tamed, and Walburga wasn’t going to let her authority be questioned, so they constantly clashed.
Sirius didn’t start having problems with his mother because of any blood purity ideals or that nonsense. Sirius is much deeper than that. He started having issues with Walburga because she was very dominant and imposing, and he had a naturally rebellious character that wouldn’t accept orders from anyone. As a child, he would do the opposite of whatever his mother told him, just to annoy her.
His idea of going to Gryffindor didn’t come about until he met James on the train. I mean, he knew he wanted to annoy Walburga, and thought that becoming best friends with a “blood traitor” would be a good way to do it. Plus, James was like him: rich and from a good family, so they would get along. If he ended up in Gryffindor, even better, because that would make his mother lose a lot of hair.
His rejection of his family’s ideals wasn’t ideological at first, but stemmed from the need to rebel against his mother. Over time, he rationalized those ideas and turned against them, but he never delved deeper into this aspect. That’s why, even though he said blood purity was wrong and that the Blacks were rubbish, he still had attitudes very similar to those of his relatives, just on “the other side.”
As children, he and Regulus had a fairly close relationship typical of older and younger brothers, where the older one always annoys the younger one, and the younger one tells them to piss off. But Regulus never forgave him for taking his rebellion to such an extreme and always thought he’d gone too far with the whole hanging out with Potter and going to Gryffindor thing.
He didn’t have major issues with his brother until he realized Regulus was getting close to Death Eater circles and was considering joining their ranks. They had a terrible argument about this, where Regulus accused him of spending years ignoring everything and everyone because he was too busy acting like an idiot with “his dear Potter,” and now he wasn’t in a position to lecture him on morality, basically telling him to fuck off. Sirius would never admit that this hurt him deeply; he just told Regulus to fuck off too, and they never spoke again.
Orion Black didn’t have much of a role in that house. He just watched what happened without saying anything because he was afraid of his wife, and Sirius always resented his father’s attitude, considering him a useless puppet.
His biggest goal in life was to annoy his mother, which is why he covered his room with everything that could drive Walburga crazy, while Walburga would give him all sorts of orders and punishments to make him do things he hated, just to annoy him. It was basically a competition between them to see who had more power.
People often speculate that he was abused and other nonsense, which is why he left home, but I think he made the decision for something much simpler: maybe they tried to betroth him to some pure-blood woman, maybe it was at a family gathering when they announced that Regulus was going to start joining Bellatrix’s circle to join “the cause,” or maybe it was a way to punish his mother after a big argument. Either way, I don’t think he intended to leave forever, but once he went to the Potters’ house and discovered what a functional family was like—rich, where he wouldn’t lose any comfort or privilege—he stayed.
Walburga spent years sending him threatening letters to come back, and he spent years secretly responding, telling her to fuck off. Eventually, when he finished Hogwarts, the letters stopped arriving.
He always said his brother died because he was an idiot and got involved where he shouldn’t, and repeated that he was stupid and had it coming. But when he found out about his death, he basically had one of the biggest drinking binges of his life, and obviously told everyone at the pub, while drunk, that his brother was an idiot and deserved to be dead, while crying uncontrollably, because that’s how Sirius Black confronts his cognitive dissonance.
He never told James that he’d done that.
Speaking of James, Sirius had a terrible dependence on him, very similar to Severus’ dependence on Lily. James was Sirius’ moral compass, and he looked up to him as an example of how he should be because, to Sirius, James was everything a pure-blood wizard should be.
He also had a crush on James that he wasn’t even aware of because he told himself it was just a brotherly attachment. In reality, he was totally obsessed with James, to the point that he got angry when James finally started dating Lily, claiming that “he’d become less fun,” which was basically a way of saying he was really resentful because they no longer spent all their time together, but Sirius was too in denial to admit it was jealousy.
He probably couldn’t stand Lily at first, but since Sirius is a loyal dog, he ended up being the third wheel in their relationship and came to care about her a lot because he wanted everything James appreciated by association.
Contrary to popular belief, Sirius didn’t give a shit about Remus or Peter. He only hung out with them because James did, but if he could use them or manipulate them for any of his Machiavellian plans, he wouldn’t hesitate. He didn’t truly start appreciating Remus until he got out of Azkaban, and even then, he did it in a very utilitarian way, basically because he felt lonely and James was dead.
Sirius had a very classist background. He knew the theory of equality, but didn’t apply it. He never questioned his privileges and never deconstructed the elitist and sadistic mentality his family had taught him since childhood, which is why he treated Severus like garbage or was pretty inconsistent between what he said and what he actually did.
Sirius did project onto James in Harry, just like Severus did, but while Severus projected hate, Sirius projected affection. However, he was also a dysfunctional adult who couldn’t see the kid as an independent person in himself, and anyone who denies this doesn’t understand how trauma works, sorry folks.
Sirius was bisexual, though he probably didn’t even realize it, because he never wanted to admit he had a massive crush on James.
The one who got on his nerves the most was his cousin Bellatrix, who ironically, was the one who resembled him the most in terms of personality.
He said he hated Snape because he was disgusting, liked the Dark Arts, and sucked up to people like his family, which seemed inconceivable to him. But the truth is, he subconsciously hated him because an aristocrat like Sirius Black, who reveled in abandoning that world for the “good,” couldn’t stand to see a working-class guy daring to climb socially to the sphere he had rejected. His internalized classism made such a thing inconceivable, so he projected all his frustrations onto Snape.
James was the one who started the bullying, but Sirius was the most sadistic and violent of the two. Sometimes James had to remind Sirius that there were certain limits he couldn’t cross because no one had taught Sirius limits; in his family, sadism was encouraged.
One of the reasons he was so disturbed by being locked in his childhood house with his mother’s paintings yelling at him all the time was because he had to face the reality that she saw him (even though it wasn’t really her) as a failure. He had to come to terms with the fact that, at 36, he was only a shadow of what he once was, and his mother, the one he’d always confronted and bragged about being better and doing better without, now saw him as a wreck. That was too much for him.
Sirius Black was a smoker and died a smoker.
He had problems with alcohol in his later days.
He kept telling himself to blindly trust Dumbledore and convinced himself it was the right path, but deep down, he’d been questioning a lot of things about the old man for a while, though he never said anything out loud.
Had he been a father, he’d say he’d prefer to have a boy, but deep down, he would have been the typical “girls’ dad” at heart.
Had he ever settled down, he never would have done it with a Muggle or a Muggle-born, he would have done it with a pure-blood witch from a rich family with a personality strangely similar to his mother’s. But he would have never admitted that, not in a million years.
If he’d gone to therapy, every single session, without exception, would have revolved around Walburga.

ASTROLOGY NOTES
Tumblr media Tumblr media
every single time i come across a man that gives me creep vibes, i check their chart and they unsurprisingly always have a scorpio stellium
sag 2nd house people are lucky w their finances !
whenever i come across people who have had extremely rough lives, they always have their saturn in scorpio or capricorn (mainly cap)
scorpio rising people are way more intimidating than scorpio sun people.
mercury and the third house represents the way you communicate. if you have a cancer mercury/cancer in the 3rd house or your mercury at a cancer degree, you’re probably constantly told you have a very nurturing/sweet voice. or the way you talk is very nurturing. (i have a taurus mercury at a cancer degree and people tell me the way i talk is very sensual (taurus mercury) and sweet (cancer degree) see how it’s put together ?
wanna recharge your energy based off of the dominant element of your chart ? i got you bestie !
fire doms can recharge by exercising/simply moving their body or going outside and getting more sun ☀️
earth doms can recharge by grounding themselves/ walking barefoot outside. & if you realllyy want that extra boost, try hugging trees ;) 🌳
air doms can recharge by doing breath work (breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 7 and blow out for 8) , meditating or writing down things on their mind. ☁️
water doms can recharge by sitting in bodies of water or channeling their water then drinking it. (saying positive affirmations to your water and then drinking it) 🌊
Tumblr media

catalysts in witchcraft
a catalyst by definition is: a substance that enables a chemical reaction to proceed at a usually faster rate or under different conditions (as at a lower temperature) than otherwise possible.
in spellwork, a catalyst (by my own definition) is something you can use to amplify a spell or ritual and has the potential to manifest results quicker than you would have without a catalyst.
based on my research, all of the correspondences below are associated with either manifestation, energy/power, success; or, some or all of the above.
botanicals: acorn, allspice, aloe, amber, angelica, balm of gilead, bamboo, belladonna (nightshade), bergamot, black haw, black walnut, carnation, carrot, cedar, centaury, cherry bark, cinnamon, cinquefoil, club moss, coffee, cowslip, cramp bark, daffodil, damiana, dittany, dragon's blood, ebony, echinacea, fig, frankincense, gentian, ginger, goldenseal, ham, hawthorn, lady's mantle, lovage, mastic, mint, mugwort, myrrh, oregano, paprika, parsley, peppermint, red pepper, rowan, sage, sandalwood, spinach, st. john's wort, star anise, sunflower, tangerine, vanilla, walnut, witches burr, wormwood (absinthe)
crystals: amazonite, aventurine, carnelian, cinnabar, citrine, garnet, goldstone, herkimer diamond, honey calcite, lapis lazuli, pyrite, quartz, red jasper, sunstone, tiger's eye, yellow jasper
colors: magenta, red, orange
lunar phases: blue moon, full moon, black moon
day of the week: sunday, monday, tuesday
planet: sun, moon, mars, pluto
constellation: andromeda, cetus, corona borealis, crux, draco, eridanus, hydra, hydrus, leo, lupus, orion, perseus, the pleiades, sagittarius, taurus

Menelaus of Alexandria
Menelaus of Alexandria was a Greek astronomer, scientist, and mathematician who lived around 100 CE. Menelaus made a significant and lasting contribution to the fields of astronomy, geometry, and trigonometry. His major work, the Spherics survives and presents what is today called Menelaus' Theorem. The theorem uses lettered diagrams of pure geometry to calculate spherical triangles or distances across a sphere with implications for the practical study of astronomy such as the trajectory of planets. Menelaus, and others like him, reduced the physical world to a purely geometric one, and so he was then able to calculate the unmeasurable, an approach which became the very foundation of modern science.
Life & Works
History is almost totally silent regarding any biographical details of Menelaus. All that we do know is that he made a series of astronomical observations in Rome in 98 CE and that he was known to the Greek writer Plutarch (c. 45-50 CE - c. 120-125 CE). We also know the titles of several of his works, mostly via references in the works of others, notably later Arab writers and compilers of (now mostly lost) ancient texts. These works include:
Spherics (Sphaerica) - Menelaus' most important work, which survives as an Arabic translation. It deals with the mathematical studies of spheres and the implications thereof on the subject of astronomy. The work is divided into three books, the first of which examines spherical triangles, defining them and proposing theorems based on the 4th-3rd century BCE Greek mathematician Euclid's work on plain triangles. This is the earliest surviving detailed study of spherical triangles. The second book concerns spherical topics with observations on astronomy similar to those made by Euclid and the astronomer and mathematician Theodosius of Bithynia (l. c. 100 BCE). The third book is a much more innovative treatise on the fundamental principles of spherical trigonometry, again, the earliest known such study. It presents Menelaus' Theorem (see below) and the Rule of Four Quantities and the Law of Tangents.
Specific Gravities - another surviving work in Arabic translation. This book was dedicated to the Roman emperor Domitian (r. 81-96 CE).
Elements of Geometry - three books mentioned by the Persian scholar al-Biruni (b. 973 CE) and likely a collection of problems concerning Euclidean geometry.
A treatise on chords in a circle, possibly some form of early trigonometric table. This work is referred to by the 4th-century CE mathematician and commentator Theon of Alexandria.
A work on the signs of the zodiac, which is referred to by the 4th-century CE mathematician Pappus of Alexandria.
Three works mentioned in the 10th-century CE Fihrist, an Arabic catalogue by Ibn al-Nadim. These are Book on the Triangle, On the Knowledge of the Weights and the Distribution of Different Bodies, and an untitled work on mechanics. These texts possibly included Menelaus' estimation of the precession of the equinoxes.
Menelaus helped in the progress of science by his reduction of the physical (planets) to the purely geometrical (mathematical diagrams).

Libra
September 23 - October 23
Thoth, God of Knowledge, and Ma’at - Goddess of Truth and Divine Justice
The zodiac series: Libra art by Johfra Bosschart
The tenth holy night of the Christmas season, from January 2 to 3, corresponds to rulerships, the higher intuition (Buddhi, life spirit) and the constellation Libra. In the painting below, Johfra (1919-1998) depicts characteristics of the Libra, and in the following text he provides an explanation.
The Libra is a positive sign, sky in essence, the sign the sun is at the beginning of fall as it crosses the equator to enter the period of winter. The ruling planet is Venus. The distinctive quality of this sign is balance and harmony. That is why the composition of this painting, like that of the Twins, has been kept symmetrical.
In the sign of Libra, the orientation of the soul changes. While in the preceding six signs the emphasis of the evolving human being has been on the self, in the following six signs the non-self is central to the acquisition of experience. It is Venus, the goddess of love, harmony and beauty who reigns here.
It is above all also the balance between head and heart, mind and feeling, which is the aim of this sign. That is why I also involved Thot-Hermes in the performance when compiling the symbolism. Just as I have pictured Mercury as ruler of the mind in his Egyptian form, so here also the goddess Venus appears in her Egyptian form as Hator, the goddess of joy, dance, celebration and love, with cow horns and ears. The two figures keep a balance.
On the one scale the feather of Maat – so again the soul-judgment, but then in connection with love-wisdom. The placement of Mercury to the left and Venus to the right of the balance refers to the kabbalah where Hod, the sefira who rules over the mental aspect in man, stands below on the left pillar of the tree of life (the pillar of austerity), while Nezach, the feeling , is at the bottom of the right pillar (of loving kindness or mercy). So here too the perfect balance between reason and emotion is expressed. Left and right absolutely need each other. Reason without feeling is sterile and deadly. The emotion without the corrective mind is just sentimentality and creates chaos. Both are very dangerous abilities without their polar opposites.
Nezach is the seventh sefira. Hence Hator carries a seven-pointed star between her horns. Below it is the astrological sign of Venus. In her hand she holds a sistrum, the ritual ringing instrument of the Hator priestesses. The four serpentine rods it contains represent the four elements that harmoniously resonate in the cosmos. Winding around the figure of the ibis-headed Thoth are the well-known serpents of the Mercury staff — the negative and positive forces united in harmony. In his hand he holds the ankh cross – the symbol of eternal life among the ancient Egyptians. At the center of his belt is the astrological sign of the planet Mercury.
The harmonic duality of the sign Libra is further depicted in the lower part of the painting by the two Assyrian sphinxes. These represent the chariot (arcanum 7) on the tarot card, which is associated with the sign of Libra. Here the two sphinxes pulling the chariot represent opposing cosmic forces, which work harmoniously under the guidance of the charioteer.
In the painting, the two animals are also symbols of the four elements in a positive (male sphinx) and negative (female sphinx) respect: the head is the element of water, the lion's front legs are the element of fire, the wings are the element of air and the bull's abdomens are the element earth – completely analogous to the four beasts of Ezekiel and the four symbols of the evangelists from the previous sign of Virgo.
The black and white checkered tile floor also refers to the harmonious cooperation of the polar forces at the foundation of the cosmos (this is the floor of the temple of the Freemasons). The lily in the foreground represents the serenity that results from the perfect balance between head and heart.
In the middle of the tiled floor is another Masonic symbol, namely the altar in the shape of a cube. The cube represents the foundation, because it consists of squares. This "cubic stone" is the "cornerstone", the Christ. It is the philosopher's stone of alchemy. This sacred altar in the temple, where the light of the spirit is always burning and never extinguished, was the Hindu symbol for our sign Libra. Officially, this cubic stone should be black and opaque. However, I painted it as a crystal to show the sphere, the golden seed it contains. This also contains the astrological sign for Libra, also in a heptagon, for Venus is related to Nezach (the seventh sefira on the tree of life).
When the cube is unfolded, the six faces form a Christian cross. In that case, the golden seed in the center of this cross. This image is directly reminiscent of the rosary, where the rose is also attached to the center of the cross – see the scales as a rosy cross above. I chose the sign of the Rosycross because this order also strives for the balance between head and heart in building the perfect man. The red rose is the flower of Venus, for it represents self-sacrificing love.
Furthermore, some other symbols related to the union of the opposites: the Chinese yin-yang symbol in connection with the polarization in primordial matter, the superimposed ∞ (the lemniscate, the symbol of infinity), the polar forces of the sun and moon, the spirit and the soul, interacting eternally. - Johfra Bosschart

I'm a sucker for you.
Can't turn you away.
Something 'bout you baby gets me every time
LIBRA
I'm about to lose control.
Lean back and let it roll.
I've tried to do what's right.
I'll do whatever it takes to be part of whatever you do.
I'll keep coming back to you.
I can't make up my mind.
'Cause nobody wants to be alone.
CANCER (Unconditionally)
(S)he said (s)he's a Cancer.
I'll love you forever.
Baby, I can't live without you.
If you turn away, (s)he'll cry on cue.
Girl/Boy would win an Oscar.
But nobody loves her/him like I do.
LEO
Feet don't fail me now.
I don't need no crown babe, I'm regal.
I'm livin' life like a Leo
Nobody livin' like me.
Nobody feel the way I do.
All eyes on me!
VIRGO
I’ve been overthinking, wasting all my time.
Counting down the hours wishing I could rewind.
I just need a second to gather my thoughts.
I got sweet perfection on the tip of my tongue.
I find direction wherever I want.
I might fall, but I know I will push through the pain!
I’m a hard act to follow.
Living like no tomorrow!
You wonder how you never met an earth sign.
SCORPIO
My love, I want every night with you.
Cause I don’t wanna waste my love on somebody new.
Babe, you got me coming like a midnight ride taking me so high!
Your heavenly eyes got me up all night~
You’re all I know!
I have found someone who I want to hold.
Babe, I’ve been pleadin’, dreamin’ of your touch.
SAGITTARIUS
Oh I’ve been running free!
‘Cause there’s a fire in me that won’t burn out.
And if I trip and fall, I won’t be afraid to crawl.
‘Cause I would risk it all to find out.
I will carry us through the night, through every barrier!
They’ll remember us under the lights of Sagittarius!
Even in the darkest night, I know I will reach the sky!
Just wait and see!
And when I’m far from home, know I’ll never be alone!
This flame I hold will forever burn in me.

Re: Gendered Correspondences for Plants
(Reposting my response to a now-deleted post, since the original was removed at the request of the OP.)
Context: Many books on modern witchcraft assign a binary gender to plants, which seems somewhat arbitrary at first glance and borderline inappropriate by modern standards.
The reasoning behind these correspondences has to do with the way plants were once classified in a medicinal fashion according to humors, planets, and zodiacal signs. Medicine used to require a knowledge of astrology, with physicians matching patients to remedies based on their birth chart, the associated ruling planets of the plants needed to treat their afflictions, and the general appearance of the plant itself. (For instance, the leaves of the lungwort plant somewhat resemble human lungs, so the plant was thought to be a useful remedy for respiratory ailments.)
Practitioners writing on the topic during the development of modern witchcraft carried these correspondences over, since early ritual practices were heavily dependent on astrology and heavily gendered. Once a generally agreed-upon set was compiled, it came down to us in books like Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs, a primer for many witches in their early years of study, myself included. Some traditions still rely on these more complex correspondences, but for the rest of us, they do kind of get in the way.
It's something that parts of the community that want to break away from heavily-gendered interpretations of magic are working to deconstruct.
