Tanjiro “Soreni-shitemo, Asakusano hito-tachiwa osharena kakko’o shite-itana. Nezukomo niai-sodana.”

Tanjiro “Anyway, everyone in Asakusa sure is stylish, huh? I bet you’d look great in an outfit like that!”

炭治郎「その間に、大正コソコソ噂話。うどん屋の豊さんは、浅草生まれ、浅草育ち。浅草を愛しているので、浅草でうどんを作っている…らしいですよ」

Tanjiro “Sono aidani, Taisho koso-koso uwasa-banashi. Udon’yano Toyo-sanwa, Asakusa-umare. Asakusa-sodachi. Asakusao aishite irunode, Asakusade udon’o tsukutte iru…rashii desuyo.”

Tanjiro “Now, it’s time for a Taisho-era secret! Toyo from the udon shop was born and raised in Asakusa. He makes udon in Asakusa because he loves Asakusa so much, I hear.”

"Living Ghosts" #5: "Forgive Yourself"

From my reparenting series "Living Ghosts." In which a trans lesbian cyborg, reunited with and reparenting her younger self, confronts her grief over the girl not having been able to be seen by the world.

A story:

Some nights, it was the cyborg who could not sleep, awake late into the dark, as if keeping watch. Time and terrible things had taught her vigilance, ever since she'd been the invisible girl, and it was hard to quiet the inner noise, though she tried.

She'd been mothering the girl for a year, though it felt like far longer. It had been worth it, to bring closure and acknowledgment to the girl she'd been, all alone beyond anyone's sight, but it had been hard, terribly hard.

The combat doll sat in the dark, watching the city lights below, and the dark embrace of the Pacific beyond. The chill beats station had paused long ago on her workstation nearby, and the "Are you still listening?" popup sat forgotten. A matcha can, now empty, dangled from synthetic fingertips

It was easy to comfort the girl, to build her up. To protect her, as she should have been all along. She wasn't so sure about herself, if truth were told, even if she and the girl were one and the same.

The combat doll was proud of herself for having weathered the fire and the terrible things life had flung her way, and for having managed to still find purpose and beauty and fleeting moments of peace in life. But no matter how far she got with helping the girl she'd been, somehow, something still weighed on her.

"It shouldn't have been like this," she said to the distant line of the Pacific on the nighttime horizon. "She...I...shouldn't have had to suffer. They had a choice. THEY HAD A CHOICE!" She flung the empty can at the wall, and then immediately winced at the loud clang.

The hum of the central air. The dim cast of her heads-up projection, minimized for nighttime. The sounds of traffic below the building and under the trees. The cyborg covered her face in her hands and fought the lump in her throat.

All the adults who'd had the power over her life. All the claims they made of having her best interests at heart. They had a choice. They could have listened to her. How could so many of them have failed so completely?

"They had a choice," she moaned. "They had a choice."

She didn't notice the girl enter the room.

"Um...I heard a noise..." she said to the cyborg, voice hushed. "Are you...is everything okay?"

The woman couldn't bear to look at the girl, at the face that was hers but had been denied her, back then.

"Saku hazu datta...Sakaru hazu datta anata wa, sono susamajii chinmoku no naka, sazo kurushinda de arou. Sazo ya mattaku kankyaku saretano de arou. Yuruse!" the middle-aged cyborg wept in Japanese, head bowed before the girl she had been, even when the world hadn't seen it. ‹You, who should have been blooming, you should have been flourishing-- how you must have suffered in that terrible silence. Oh how completely they failed you. Forgive me!›

There was a pause. Then the doll felt herself embraced by the girl she'd been, once upon a time, in spite of how utterly she'd been failed.

"Why are you asking me to forgive you?" the girl asked. "Can you forgive yourself?"

"Because there weren't nearly enough grownups who were grownup enough to admit to you they were wrong. Because the people who should be begging your forgiveness won't," the cyborg sobbed. "And because I can't change what happened already. I can't give you all those years back, honey. That's the thing that hurts the most about all this. You've been nothing but a blessing to me all this time, and you could've had so much better--"

"But can you forgive yourself?" the girl asked again.

"I...I don't know..."

The girl, who'd never let her go, squeezed her tighter. "It'd be a little silly calling you 'me', so I'm going to do what I've wanted to do from the beginning, cause you've been like another mom to me."

"What's that?"

"It's not your fault people were so awful," the girl declared. "The world is awful a lot of the time, even if it's beautiful, and it's worth fighting for. You taught me that, remember? So please, Mom. Forgive yourself."

For all the pain, all the miles, all the suffering in the silent dark, the middle-aged cyborg-- forged in fire, soft but sharp-- wept for the girl.

Beyond the window, high above the city of immortals and the Pacific beyond, through the light pollution, shone the stars in silent, majestic vigil.

The stars that, like the girl, were unconquered and free.

Sasuke and Sakura wake up in the middle of a field one morning, the sun shining in a clear sky and some deer grazing near the trees. All things considering, it's a beautiful day.

They have no idea who they are.

They recognize each other, but there's a lot of information missing. Sakura knows Sasuke's name and knows that he gets under her skin so easily. Sasuke knows her name because he remembers some oaf yelling it through...a village? Somewhere. He also knows that he once loved to steer clear of the girl, but has found a kinship he can still feel.

They don't know where they are. They don't know how they got there. They don't recognize the weapons on their person or the symbols on their bands. First, they decide to find water. Surely, that would be most important and on their way, they discover little things -- but only about each other.

Sakura remembers that Sasuke has a green thumb as they pass through the brush, having successfully grown tomatoes around his home. She can't tell him where his home is or what it looks like, only about the tomatoes. When Sasuke slices his finger on a rose thorn, he remembers that Sakura can heal just by touching him. There's usually a green glow of sorts, but she can heal him...and she does.

They continue like this over the next few days, discovering memories one by one. It's not always happy and they fight. Oh, they fight. And it's not until lightning encompasses Sasuke's fist that he recalls her eyes widening in shock, pain, fear as he drives it in her chest.

They don't know how that happened, why he hurt her so, but there's a matching scar under her collarbone. Sakura finds scars along the bottom of Sasuke's feet and remembers driving spikes of hardened earth up, tossing him away from her.

Why were they fighting? Did they hate each other? Did they want to kill each other? So many questions, but first -- where is the blond man they both remember so fiercely, the one that hits them at the same time at the sight of a fox, but they can't recall his name?

“Does it suck coming here for you?” Karui asks the Hyuuga bluntly.  “You’re the girl Kumo tried to kidnap a long time ago, right?” 

Was that a weird way to start small-talk with the Konoha kunoichi Karui was to be working with? Probably.  Did Karui care or even have an inkling that this was inappropriate? Absolutely not.   She crosses her arms and looks out towards the mountainside.  There were about half-way to her village. Many stops had to be made so Hinata could adjust to altitude changes.

“Anyway.  You’re not gonna throw up, are you?”
