Rated General, 1000 words, Akane/Yumi Yumi settles into her new life and begins to realize there's something missing.

Turns out, running a restaurant was a lot harder than it looked.  Especially when the head server wasn’t great at talking to people, the head chef had only been cooking for a single week, and all the financials existed solely in the brain of a person who was no longer on the same planet.  

(If Design even had a brain.  Yumi still didn’t know what that strange woman was, nor did her old assistants, who had thankfully stayed on to prevent complete disaster.  Except the one who’d fled when the old coatrack had come to life.  Putting up with Design’s oddities had been one thing, but no job was worth putting up with that, he’d said.)

Worse, Painter’s role in saving the city had made him a minor local celebrity, drawing thronging crowds and massive scrutiny, and a clumsy business operation coupled with furious demand was a recipe for failure.  Both feared that all their admiration would last only as long as their patience for late, cold noodles. 

“These (lowly) customers,” Painter groused one night after closing, as they stacked chairs on the tables for sweeping.  “Please tell me I was never this infuriating.”

Yumi balanced a chair on one leg.  “I may no longer be a yoki-hijo, but that has not changed my position on lying,” she said.

Painter laughed, then leaned forward and kissed her on the cheek.  The chair toppled.

He winced apologetically and put the chair back the normal inverted way.  “I’m just saying.  I’m an artist.  Why did Design think I’d know how to wait tables?”

Yumi nodded in sympathy.  They both knew he’d get better with practice, but that didn’t ease his frustration in the time being.  

In comparison, she felt a little guilty at how quickly she was improving in her new role.  

They maintained separate residences, because neither felt ready to move in together.  Ironically, sharing a body did not prepare them for sharing an apartment.  Neither could be comfortable at the other’s preferred temperature, for a start.  Fortunately, all the former nightmare painters had been permitted to keep their free housing for a year to ease their transition into a radically changing labor market, and Yumi took over Design’s former quarters in the back of the restaurant, so they didn’t have to worry about rent.

Each night, after they closed, she practiced for long hours, basking in the residual warmth of boiling broth, measuring out herbs and spices and other ingredients until she knew the look and weight of them intuitively, and she could reach for each ingredient without conscious thought.  Meanwhile Painter walked home every night, watching the walls come to life with extraordinary murals commissioned by the government to create work for the unemployed artists.  Artists who weren’t him.   He’d finally gotten his love of painting back, just in time to lose his calling.  Then they’d sleep separately, and in the morning, they’d unite for breakfast and watch a couple shows on the hion viewer at Painter’s apartment.  Yumi would cocoon herself in blankets, and Painter would do his best to snuggle her from the outside.  

It was nice.  But part of her felt like something was missing.  She no longer felt that sizzle of energy when they touched, for starters.  That had been about their condition, she discovered—it hadn’t been about them.  Without the fate of both worlds hanging in the balance and a spirit artificially connecting their souls, Yumi feared she and Painter were falling out of sync.  Like a stone that refused to balance on one side, and needed a different orientation.

I’ll pick Naz to answer with since they’re part of the S40 batch and I’d like to develop her relationships with more of her classmates outside of Akane, Nausikaa, and Ji Woo!

Starting with Macbeth (@alien-til-i-stage) oh boy. Naz and Macbeth would not get along at all. From the moment these two meet it is not good. Naz is shit at social cues and wouldn’t understand that Macbeth doesn’t want to be bothered until he’s like “get out” so. Yeah. Naz would be scared of that child. They don’t like each other much.

On the other hand, Naz would think Innamorati (same account as Macbeth) is really fun! She likes his hair and would vocalize wishing she was as colorful as him. They’re both sweet, outgoing people, but I feel like Naz would be intimidated by how easily he seems to get along with others and just how likable she finds him in general. She’s probably a little jealous, even.

Yumi!! Naz likes Yumi (@rockwgooglyeyes) but isn’t very good at interacting with her—they don’t seem so compatible personality-wise and they don’t have any shared interests to bridge the gap.

I feel like Naz and Asahi (@apriciticreveries) could actually have a chance of being friendly at some point? Naz and Asa would probably have a hard time getting on the same page for a long time, but Naz would be one of those people who pays Asa to play Cupid for them and then just talks Asa’s ear off about Akane. They’re quite different but they seem like they could mesh.

Naz thinks Nene (@junebluues) is great! Similar to Innamorati, they might be a little jealous of Nene’s charisma, but they think it’s awesome that their eyes are the same color and would awkwardly try to connect by referring to herself as Nene’s eyeball twin.

The only other S40 OCs I remember are Ava and Nero (@paperstarry) although I don’t think I have enough on Nero yet to make a judgement of how he and Naz would blend. Ava, however? I think Naz would see some similarities to Akane in Ava. Instead of this making her like Ava, however, she would open up a conspiracy theory about how other people are copying Akane because they recognize her talent. Which. Is obviously a total misfire. But let Naz be delusional

I think it’s funny when people roll their eyes about all the time Sanderson spends on clothes and fashion, as if it’s not an integral part of the world building and character development. I did my undergrad thesis on fashion semiotics in Mistborn (primarily using Roland Barthes) and there’s a direct correlation between how Vin is dressing and where she’s at on the hero’s journey, but in a way that doesn’t feel obvious at first. So it’s interesting to read Yumi and see how Sanderson is utilizing the language of fashion to explore these worlds and characters. The changing room scene with Akane is more than just a cute romcom scene, it’s about the process of discovery. Which is obvious but I can’t help harkening back to Barthes, who co-opts De Saussure’s thoughts on language for the use of fashion.

De Saussure identifies two aspects of language and communication: langue and parole. Langue is the rules of a particular language (subject verb order, for example) and parole is how an individual uses those rules to express themselves. Barthes applies this idea to fashion. We’re given these arbitrary rules of fashion (even as simple as “one must be dressed in public”) and from there we learn to work within the parameters of those rules to outwardly express ourselves. There’s a difference between your favorite pair of jeans and the pair of slacks you wear to work; there’s a difference between the dress you wear to a job interview and the dress you wear on a date where you’re trying to fuck.

The changing room scene is Yumi shotgunning the concepts of langue and parole all at once. She is learning new rules (you can have your shoulders bare) while learning how to express herself within the parameters of those rules (you can wear a dress with bare shoulders and still cover your shoulders with another garment). It’s cute and sweet but also important. She’s learning not just how to express herself but also that she’s allowed to. There’s nothing frivolous about how Sanderson uses and describes fashion. It’s a direct outgrowth of the journeys he sends his characters on.

Aoto would be 'vocal chords'. He talks a lot, he laughs. It's his best attribute.

Yvonne would be 'heart'. She loves so much, it's all she wants to be, even if she can be more. She wants to make her partner think she's vital for him. He can't live without her.

Eliana would also be 'vocal chords', but unlike Aoto, it's because it's all she has. It's why she was adopted. It's why she got into ALIEN STAGE. It's why she met Nene. It's the center of her life.

It started as a normal conversation—normal for them, an least. Izzy, gesticulating wildly as she contemplated what their alien neighbors would use their extra arms for during their more… intimate moments. Masaka, sketchpad on her lap, occasionally throwing out an oddly insightful suggestion. Akane, leaning forward, grinning face propped on the palm of one hand, shooting Yumi secretive little smiles that made the back of her neck feel warm.

Then Izzy, tired of talking to herself, turning to Yumi, asking her to weigh in.

And Yumi, caught off guard, stammering out a reply.

“Why are you asking me?” She twirled a lock of hair around her finger, staring into her half-empty bowl of noodles. “It’s not like I have any experience to compare it to.”

Izzy reached across the table to pat her on the shoulder, paying no attention as Masaka reached out without looking to tug her bowl out of the path of Izzy’s trailing sleeve. “I mean, I know you and Nikaro never got it on before you broke up.” Nikaro and her were fine, now, post-breakup awkwardness long since eroded, but Yumi was still very glad today was his day off. “But I’m sure you still have valuable contributions to add to the alien-banging conversation! Plus, I bet you’ve had your share of wicked solo-seshes. So just imagine those, but if you had four arms.”

“I haven’t.” Yumi said. She glanced up from her noodles just to be met with Izzy’s unimpressed stare.

“I know you don’t have four-armed bodice-ripping fantasies, Yumi, I’m asking you to imagine as my friend that you’re going to town on yourself, but just with two more arms than usual.”

“You could stack rocks while you got yourself off,” Masaka added, trying to be helpful, probably.

“Did anyone catch last night’s The Young and the Spirited?” Akane asked, trying to change the subject a split second too late to stop Yumi from blurting out, “I’ve never gotten myself off.”

its sooo sick that nishiki ended up being more like kazama than kiryu ever was.

really, kiryu isnt like kazama at all. he holds the same ideals, but its different. kazama never really practiced what he preached until it was too late (i.e saving haruka, helping yumi further down the line)

kazama is one of the most interesting characters, similar to sawashiro (though sawashiros rottenness is more my taste tbh)(i want to make a post abt my thoughts on ichi and sawashiro soon.. i think theres alot to say abt their very complicated relationship, writing to akane about him while also calling him a dumbass and threatening to kill him is so funny)(“dear akane today i tried to chop off ichis finger and called him a dumbass punk, kids today, huh”). i think hes too greedy, he wants his cake and wants to eat it too. he tells kiryu to leave yumi and nishiki alone. he leaves kiryu in the dark about things, ik thats a gameplay aspect but i still think it speaks to his greed. he doesnt want kiryu to think of him negatively (he cuts kashiwagi off when he brings up his past assassinations). he wants to be a father but doesnt know how to. you say he tries his best to disuade the orphans from swearing up? not true. if he really wanted to stop them from joining he wouldnt have been around at all. he didnt have to visit him, he wanted to, out of guilt, out of regret, doesnt matter his intentions, at the end of the day him being there and playing father led kiryu and nishiki both to join. though, kiryu joined out of admiration, and nishiki? like kazama, joined because of his guilt. they paid for yukos medical bills, what else could he do?

kiryu was all the things kazama wanted to be, but nishiki? he was all the things kazama was. I still dont think they had a father-son relationship, its more.. complicated, messy, the worst type of relationship two unfamiliar yet similar men could have. yet at the same time, nishikis is his fathers son.

Cosmeregirl: Favorite scene to write [in Yumi]?

Brandon Sanderson: I think my favorite sequence in the book is probably the sequence where Akane takes Yumi shopping. For whatever reason, there’s a change that happens right there with Yumi’s character that I really enjoyed writing, revising, and working on. It’s a big turning point for her.

1. Adolin

2. Siri

I'm seeing: Midnight Family Picnics.

Siri: Whose ready for Midnight Family Picnic?? Both kids: [cheering] Siri: Tonight we have a lovely assortment of sweet treats, assorted nuts for salt, and of course a Surprise Stew that the cook whipped up! Siri: Let's set up the tent, and we can get eating!!

3. Kaladin

Wants to support his kid in everything...but may be slightly overprotective

Small child: Dad, Dad look! I climb ALL the way to top! Kaladin: Wow! Great job!! Syl: Wow! I'm surprised you're letting him climb a rock that tall! Kaladin: Well, you know. It's good for a kid to get to explore and be fearless. Syl: ... Syl: Got him Lashed so he can't fall, huh? Kaladin: You know it.

As an emo guy, he of course ends up with a kid who is the opposite.

Akane: Are you wearing...a pink shirt with a heart on it? Nikaro: My daughter is obsessed with kawaii fashion. Nikaro: She wanted to style me. Akane: That also explains the sparkly eyeshadow. Nikaro: It does. Akane: ... Akane: Is your goth soul dying inside? Nikaro: Only a little.

6. Yumi

It feels inevitable that Yumi would give birth to a tiny Godzilla child.

Yumi: Look! Mommy made the stack sooooo high! Child: [shrieking with delight as they plow right into it, knocking it over] Yumi: [smile only slightly strained] A mother's love is a powerful thing.

7. Lopen

They say it takes a village, and Lopen definitely has that.

Sigzil: You know...I'm impressed by how well-rounded your kid is. Lopen: Ha ha! A Herdazian is always well-rounded--and very often round as well! Lopen: Every cousin teaches 'im something--he's learned to cook and talk quick and make friends and tell jokes and stick people to walls and all the things! Small Lopen child: [flips someone off] Lopen: He learned that from me! Sigzil: You don't say...

8. Tress

Raises her child on the high seas.

Child: [screaming a sea shanty at the top of her lungs while she swabs the deck] Ann: She getting punished for something? Tress: What? No! She just likes to sing and her favorite one is about swabbing the decks. Tress: I tried to get her interested in spores, but apparently that's not as exciting as swabbing the deck.
