Hanako as a representation of abuse
This is an extensive post of how abuse afflicted Yugi Amane and even Hanako's behavior well into afterlife. Of course, emotional abuse is directly related to physical abuse, so I'll be talking about them together for the most part.
Tumblr media
1. Behavioural Signs in Yugi Amane
We don't know why or who is behind this, and I won't particularly talk about it since it's not the focus anyway. We know his abuse started somewhere during his first year and was repeated until his suicide, july of his 2nd year. According to Tsuchigomori, he was badly injured every single day, so that's at least around a year worth of constant physical abuse.
Tumblr media
However, it's important to note that it's very likely that before the physical abuse, emotional abuse was already consistently taking place, with multiple signs- He's isolated, experiences social withdrawal and has no friends, skips classes & school activities and has poor academic performance that contrasts his actual capabilities.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
His emotional development is poor; He has difficulties expressing and understanding his own feelings, very likely a factor in the degradation of his and Tsukasa's relationship where Tsukasa can't understand Amane and Amane can't understand Tsukasa either due to lack of proper communication, and something that carries well over into the afterlife as Hanako.
The physical abuse worsened his already messed up mental state, and everything ultimately drove him into depression. He engages in behavior that puts his own safety in jeopardy (Like when he was way too close to falling over the window, both of his feet were at the very edge of the window frame), and while his love towards space stayed the same, he was overtaken by feelings of helplessness.
Tumblr media
Even a rock could travel from the Moon to Earth, which gave him hope. It's important to highlight the word "even". He claims that if 'even' a rock can go this far, so can he, suggesting very low self-esteem. It's an object that carried him through many hardships because of this hope, but everything got so bad said hope just made him feel worse. At some point he started experiencing active suicidal ideation, marked by him giving away his treasured possession to Tsuchigomori in order to rid himself of this "hope", and declaring that he decided he wouldn't "go anywhere", a clear metaphor for deciding he would give up on his future and take his own life. He decided he cannot go anywhere near farther than a rock.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. Behavioural signs in Hanako
As we mostly see his ghost self, we have a clearer vision of Hanako than we have of Amane. We can easily see his horribly low self-esteem and feelings of worthlessness. When we catch a glimpse of his perspective, we see how distorted his sense of self is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He repeatedly claims that he isn't worth anything and that his existence itself is a punishment, and so refuses to disappear, considering that it would only be a release from the torment he deserves.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He hates himself down to his core, although this is a combined result of both depression via his experienced abuse and his PTSD of the murder-suicide. As Amane, he was capable of saying that it's fine if he's tormented this terribly, that even if there's no reason for it, he forgives it, massively contrasting Hanako who is incapable of forgiving himself, claiming that even if he had a super special reason for Tsukasa's murder, there's not a single justification that would warrant forgiveness. He's capable of forgiving anything that anyone does to him no matter how horrible, but not of forgiving himself.
Tumblr media
As such, verbal abuse directed at him is taken positively by him, such as when Akane states that "reformed villains", refering to Hanako, make him sick, continuing to talk about how he can never take back what he did, essentially degrading him. He was given very harsh words that visibly hurt him, even implying that it triggered his PTSD for a moment, yet he could only claim that Akane is the type of person he likes most, as he was essentially validating and feeding into Hanako's already deeply negative view of himself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is also supported by his time in the Picture Perfect arc via his belief that he's undeserving of anything better for himself. Hanako said it himself in 71 that he wished he could've lived a normal life with Nene and Kou, and the Picture World reflected exactly that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's a world that was shaped exactly like he wanted, and that's exactly why he hated it. He knew what his reality was, and furthermore, he knows of his crimes and how he was the one who destroyed his own future, and so thinks he's undeserving of it.
Tumblr media
He refuses to look at the stars for too long, because that reminds him of the hopes and dreams he gave up on in reality- He has no right to dare pick them up again, further highlighted by him refusing to go on the moon in the End of a Dream. His wish wasn't granted while alive, and now can't be granted after death.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In his helplessness, he is unable to reach for better circumstances for himself. After all, he's quick to adapt to whatever bad thing comes his way. "It's just how the world works", and he has to accept it.
Tumblr media
However, we know how that doesn't apply to the people he cares about. He may have given up on everything, but he is unable to give up on the people he loves. No matter how much he suffers, no matter what he has to do, he wants the people he loves to find happiness.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
No matter how much he tried to tell himself he isn't supposed to care, he desperately wants them to live the fulfilling lives he didn't have. And if he is the one that gives them the salvation they need, he finds the indulgence to want a small part of him to live through them, the indulgence to hate himself just a little bit less.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He actively attempts to hide his past from other people, being content with them only knowing basic information about it (that he's a murderer), mainly because he doesn't want to appear vulnerable or know how much of a horrible person (according to himself) he actually is.
When it comes to people he has a good relationship with like Nene, he's actually afraid of them finding out, and even months after promising he would tell Nene everything, he's still reluctant to do so due to overall difficulty with opening up- exposure to characters or topics that relate to his past more often than not results in reactions varying from heavy emotional distress, expressing aggression, anger, guilt and/or shame, to reliving traumatic events. Avoidance seems to be his main method of coping.
Tumblr media
Hanako suffers from emotional dysregulation. He not only has high difficulties processing and expressing his feelings, but has difficulty picking up on others' emotions as well. For half a century he had been socially and emotionally neglected while also being incapable of ever maturing past the age of 13, much less healing from his past experiences. They rather worsened due to a supernatural lifestyle. When he first met Nene, he wasn't behaving appropriately at all due to this and their relationship went through many difficulties due to his lack of boundaries and poor emotional intelligence, and him communicating his true feelings is always a rare occasion.
Not only did he not take into account other people's feelings ("Yashiro will hate it, but it's ok, she'll move on someday and live her life", not taking into account and understanding others being possibly spiteful over his actions and direct their hate towards innocent parties), he doesn't even take into account his own ("Why? Good question. Why am I doing it?" and "Even though I was prepared to never see you again, I'm so happy to have you back. Weird, right? There must be something wrong with me"). However, due to Nene's influence, he seems to be a little more upfront with his feelings lately.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He's also incredibly self-reliant. Both events of Picture Perfect and the Severance were a result of Hanako doing everything by himself without consulting anyone. He decided by himself that he's the only one that should dirty his hands as he was already a sinner, that it's easier to dump everything on the one that's already guilty of similar crimes, because he didn't have any other solution in sight. It's important to note that he took the *entire* blame for the Severance- Even if all he did was feign ignorance to no. 6's actions.
Him being grounded in the miserable reality he finds himself in is both a strength (as he is quick to adapt to his conditions) and a major weakness- He'll only be able to see the most practical, yet unfortunate approaches.
In the Clock Keepers arc, he wanted to trust Kou when he said he would save Nene, but his attempt quickly turned to failure when he was not seeing any tries, let alone results. He was even upset at Kou when he considered that if he wanted the job done he should have just done it himself, knowing that his methods aren't ones someone would approve of. Methods that he doesn't approve of himself, but carried them out anyway in his despair.
Tumblr media
In fact, Hanako did not break free from the shackles of abuse. He is a child that has been placed in a position of leadership filled with various responsibilities for fifty years. He is committed to his duties as a mystery after being promised salvation by 'God', believing that his sins would be forgiven, but he's essentially just being used.
He is, in present time, still repeatedly emotionally abused, manipulated and exploited to fulfill others' agenda. After all, control is at the heart of abuse, and his vulnerabilities will continue to just get taken advantage of as long as he's only capable of masking and avoiding them. However, Nene's influence upon him seems to make him capable of slightly improving himself, even if it's just very small steps at a time.

Y’all remembered this au right?
Detective Nene and phantom thief Hanako.
Hanako’s ultimate goal was to steal the moon,
Tumblr media
I’m pretty sure this was a foreshadowing of yorishiro Tsukasa.
Because Tsukasa is associated with the moon right, his name kanji means moon and everything.
And later on in the chapters it’s revealed that Tsukasa is Hanako’s yorishiro.
‘Stealing the moon’ is probably related to the whole yorishiro thing. At least I think it is.
Amane/Hanako’s obsessed with the moon, and since Tsukasa is associated with the moon, that’s similar to his excessive attachment to Tsukasa.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But I wonder why it was said to be his ultimate goal. Is his ultimate goal in the manga have something to do with Tsukasa?
I wanna know what Hanako’s ultimate goal/plan/wish is soon.

There are too many bad and wrong takes abt Hanako. Some of ya’ll cannot comprehend anything abt his character beyond “b-but he did a bad thing😰” and I simply do not have the patience to read those analyses anymore. I’ve seen an increase in these attitudes towards him now that the Picture Perfect arc has been animated which has me a little worried for how Aoi, Akane, and Hakubo will be perceived next season

Something I found especially interesting after this chapter was the difference in views between Teru and Akane. More specifically I think it’s interesting how Akane claims to hate supernaturals, just like how Teru does but he still goes out of his way in this chapter to defend Mirai and Kako… Obviously we’ve seen in the court arc that he clearly does care for them but still I just think it’s interesting and was wondering if you had any good thoughts and analysis on it (after all your so good at that kinda thing :))))
Akane has a reluctant soft spot for the clock keepers, deep down, but I'm a firm believer that his lackluster attempt to defend Mirai and Kako wasn't born from a place of faith or care, it was out of fear. He shares the same fear as Teru. I talk about why I interpreted it like that here.
But the chapter still show a very interesting diference in view between Teru and Akane when they learn Yugi Amane used to be a teacher.
Tumblr media
Akane is the one who calls this teacher a murderer. Teru's focus is on how he is an adult here.
Teru also calls him by name. Consistently.
Tumblr media
Usually, he only refers to supernaturals by their role or their seat position. Doesn't matter if he is happy, angry, or neutral. It's never by name.
Tumblr media
This shows Teru is still separating one timeline from the other. It's hard to say if he believes Amane is a bad person or not, but Teru does seem to have decided Amane Yugi is a person, not a supernatural.
Tumblr media
He brought up Amane's happiness to make Nene reconsider staying in this world, 100%, but I do think there is a hint of honesty to this question. I wonder what he think of the idea of a ghost, a doomed being, having an actual life, with a job, and such.
It contrasts with how Akane is treating this timeline as a reality. deciding 'Hanako is still Hanako so he is a murderer' despite not knowing anything about Professor Yugi, and 'Aoi is still the same Aoi at heart. I love her' even after seeing her differences from og Aoi.
Tumblr media
Akane is just following his program. ("Aoi is doubting my love!" -> "I will reassure her she is the only one for me.") Which falls on their old pre-severance routine, since the original Aoi main issue used to be her lack of belief she is lovable and while the New Timeline Aoi was acting differently, she still displayed the same possessive and insecure behaviors as pre-severance Aoi used to, not wanting Akane to be too close to a girl. Still, Akane has no way of knowing if this engaged Aoi is the same as the og one. He is just assuming based on the old timeline.
(unrelated but it's interesting that Akane went from "I'll love you my whole life" to "I'll love you my whole life... No, even after that" cause he is the last person to think about becoming a supernatural. It makes me wonder if part of him is aware each timeline is a completely different world, a different life... but I don't have enough insight on him yet for that, is just food for thought/headcanons.)
The main gag of this chapter is Akane treating others like their old selves while Teru treat them as separated from their old timeline counterparts.
Tumblr media
Teru is being a brat here, but he is right. This Aoi has none of the experiences Akane has. Akane needs to adapt.
Similarly, when he talks about the person Nene fell in love with, he isn't talking about a teacher Nene never met, he is talking about the ghost murderer we are familiar with.
Tumblr media
I think if I were to put the difference in their view (not their approach just their view) in a very simplified box, I would say Teru sees supernaturals as unsavable and dangerous, while Akane sees them as unforgivable and dangerous.

We don't need Yugi's flashback because their story has been told for a long time. (an analysis) Part 1.
We don't know much about the twins, but I think that's enough because their personal story parallels all the characters in this manga. And we already know it. In this analysis, I will analyze the relationships of Kou with Mitsuba, the fourth secret, Hakubo with Sumire, and Aoi with Akane, because their arcs interpret one big arc of the twins.
1. Kou and Mitsuba. That boy was still that boy.
The main problem for Kou is the "real" Mitsuba. His entire arc is reduced to trying to bring back "that" boy, while Mitsuba's problem is wanting to live as a living person. Kou feels responsible for Mitsuba and wants to help him with his own hands, not someone else's.
Tumblr media
He believes that he can make everyone happy, alone. It's really important to him, he's really dedicated to saving Mitsuba. So much so that he won't listen to anyone, even Mitsuba himself - he's so stubborn.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just like Amane.
The problem is that Kou separates the two Mitsubas, he's completely confused about "who's the real one" and spends his time trying to figure it out instead of cherishing the time he spends with Mitsuba more often.
Tumblr media
"You wanted to be my friend, right?" "You wanted to bring back the me you lost, please stay by my side..."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mitsuba wants that understanding from Kou. "Admit it already, it's impossible, I can't become a _normal_ person, because no one can do that."
Tumblr media
Mitsuba knows he's not the same anymore, but he still wants understanding. No one can turn back time, so why not just accept it? Kou is adamant.
And the famous "do you want me to die so we can understand each other better" page.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then Mitsuba calls Kou an idiot because you can't say things like that. You have to value your life.
So how does this relate to Yugi?
Amane has trouble deciding whether the "new" Tsukasa who came back is the real one, while Tsukasa just wanted some simple human warmth.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Amane thinks he's responsible, thinks he can fix everything on his own, he never listens to anyone, and is very stubborn. It's believed that he tried to fix the big clock to turn back time and bring back the "real" Tsukasa. That's why he doesn't value the time he spends with his brother, because it's not the same. He's fixated on the idea of two Tsukases and a real brother.
"You wanted to bring back the me you lost back then (that birthday), please stay by my side..."
Tsukasa just wanted to spend time with his brother. Deep down, he was waiting for the joy of meeting and understanding from Amane. No one can return Amane to a real living brother, it's all too complicated and even the machinations over time did not solve the problem. And perhaps Amane could have thought that if they both died, it would somehow bring them closer together. Tsukasa is very angry with Amane's actions, because he gave his life in exchange for his brother's health, and he destroyed it so easily, without appreciating it.
Tumblr media
2. The Fourth mystery and Mei Shijima.
I won't say much here, and maybe not very deep things, but nevertheless.
"Killing Shijima Mei is all I want." Yes, we have an obvious parallel with killing her twin with a knife, but the reasons for the fourth secret... "I wanted to protect the real you."
Tumblr media
Shijima believes that this will bring Mei good. And despite the fact that she tried to kill Mei from the dream world, she still asks her not to leave, even though she is not "real" in the full sense, because it is too painful.
Tumblr media
Also, the Fourth hates this fake world. It is too perfect in it, in a way that does not exist in reality.
Tumblr media
How does this relate to Yugi?
Amane in the pp arc is parallel to Shijima, Nene just catches their similarity.
Tumblr media
Radical problem solving, believing that they alone know what's best, doing horrible things "for your own good." Amane probably killed Tsukasa for similar reasons, believing that somehow it would be better this way. Amane also accepts the current Tsukasa as a fake, but even so, he doesn't want all the yorishiro to be destroyed, he doesn't want his brother to disappear, because losing him again is too painful.
Tumblr media
Hanako hates the world of the perfect picture, everything is too easy and wonderful in it, as it was not in his real life, where he had to endure a lot.
Tumblr media
3. Hakubo and Sumire. Mystery and yorishiro.
Sumire first appeared before us as proof that yorishiro can be in human form and her story is very parallel to Tsukasa. She had to spend many years locked away in the boundary of the mystery, in the form of the same place where she met her death.
Tumblr media
She has not met Hakubo since that day. She hoped that he would come to her, but this did not happen, although Sumire strongly maintained some hope for her own importance to him - "after all, yorishiro becomes what the school mystery cherishes most."
Tumblr media
She is tired of her existence, she has no particular purpose and she does not mind disappearing if it will help someone, if she will be useful at least in this way.
Tumblr media
Nene asks Sumire what is so good about Hakubo? After all, he is unbearable, and Sumire probably fell in love with him because there was simply no one else. No one was as close to her. It is funny to hear this from Nene, but more on that later.
Tumblr media
Sumire was also sacrificed to the hole demon in exchange for a wish, and later became a yorishiro, which is mechanically very reminiscent of Tsukasa. She also has a control complex due to the fact that she could not influence anything in her life.
Tumblr media
She would also really like to be mourned and remembered - that is, at least some sympathy in her direction.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hakubo, on the other hand, had problems expressing his will, and this is the main point of his personal history.
Tumblr media
He suffers from the fact that he could have acted differently towards Sumire, these thoughts have haunted him since that day. He understands that he did not value the time spent with her during her life, he was cold in everyday life and he did not save her from death. The guilt for her death lies heavily on him.
Tumblr media
"If I lived another life, I would have done things differently." He only grinds this thought in his head, and Sumire sits alone in the boundary, without the support of a loved one nearby.
Tumblr media
How does this relate to Yugi?
I will continue this thought in the next post, since the image limit has ended 🙌🏻

Tsukasa (Toilet Bound Hanako-Kun)
There really is no rhyme or reason to whatever that kid does, but I've decided to do something perilous and crack into his mind a bit. Wish me luck, and if I don't return...remember me.
Anyways, he's always been a messed up little dude, ever since he discovered the truth about him and Amane's destiny. So who knows, maybe he's always been a bit messed up, considering he told the deity of the red house that he wasn't going to "Hold back" anymore. I'm a twin myself, so I know that spats between us can get a little violent. We don't ever see the extent of Tsukasa's insanity as a human, but I feel it was a bit more than whatever me and my sister ever got up to. This guy is obsessed with his brother; yes I feel like my life can't be fun without my sister but I'm not that obsessed with her. Just read his character stat page and you'll know what I mean.
It all started as a normal twin relationship, his brother was sickly and Tsukasa just wanted him to feel better; he realized Amane's true wish was to be healthy. So he sacrificed himself for his brother to get better. Tsukasa didn't seem to understand his family's feelings, or the fact that they would miss him. He then learned that Amane would throw his well meaning sacrifice away one day and die young, and despite saying he loved him he would murder him. This doesn't make Tsukasa distraught, it just makes him curious. Despite Amane wanting to live so badly, there is something that would make him want to die. Despite Amane loving him, there is something that would make him want to kill him. Tsukasa just wants to know what these things are; he wants these events to come to pass, to satiate his own curiosity.
Upon his return, his mother can tell there's something demented about him. She wants him exorcised. From what I can tell, Tsukasa still spends time with his brother Amane, but he also can get a bit violent with him at times. Amane refuses to tell anyone who's hurting him. In one flashback, it also seems that Tsukasa can be emotionally manipulative as well, asking Amane if he would be okay if he just disappeared.
As a Twin, I hate to admit it, when I was younger I was emotionally manipulative. I threatened to run away or kill myself when arguments got too heated. I am aware, that was not good of me. In all fairness, she did that as well, and she is aware that was not good of her. We never beat each other up, but I wouldn't be surprised if Tsukasa got that way sometimes. Little Amane admitted that if you interrupt Tsukasa from doing something he's invested in or enjoys he gets a tad violent. That is reflected in his supernatural self, only really getting upset at people if they interrupt him or try to stop him from what he's doing at the moment.
So all in all, Tsukasa is a psycho. I can't end it there though.
He does anything to satisfy his morbid curiosity, like seeing a pufferfish's insides, building an artificial ghost to see if he could, or from the after school manga, seeing if fireworks still work inside someone's gut, or seeing if he can swim to LA. Whatever curiosity, whatever disturbing thought comes to mind, he wants to act on it. A ball of chaos, as he admits in his introduction to Kou. He doesn't believe in restraints or social order, he believes every supernatural should be free to act as they please, anyone should act to true heart's desire, even if it's acts of violence, especially if it's acts of violence. Violence is the one true thing that's a societal no-no, and since Tsukasa doesn't believe in a social order, he wants violence to run rampant. He admits loves the faces of those who don't hold back anymore, faces of people like himself.
Tsukasa is an honest person, he never once lies in the series. It's a belief of mine that he believes the social order is holding everyone back, forcing them to lie to themselves in order to uphold it. Of course some people don't want to hurt anyone, but like he cares about that. When Mitsuba in the Hell of Mirrors chose to run away instead of fighting the main group, he ends up punching him telling "you can do it" in a threatening tone. He truly believes Mitsuba can defeat them easily, and wants to see that in action, but Mitsuba doesn't want to. Also, even though he doesn't lie, he does know how to spin his words in order to make it seem like someone doesn't have a choice. He tells Mitsuba if he doesn't become the new school wonder, he's going to fade away, and "he doesn't want that, does he?" He wanted Mitsuba to gain a whole lot of power for himself to go against the group, and told if he didn't he was going to fade. It wasn't untrue, but Tsukasa made him make the wish to become the new school wonder. So Tsukasa knows how to manipulate things so that both and them get what they want, maybe in an indirect way.
When he twisted Souske's rumor, it was to grant his wish to have friends. It was rather messed up of him, because at that point Souske was happy Kou was his friend. Tsukasa didn't care about that, because Souske's true wish was to have friends, it didn't matter if Souske was okay with one. According to Tsukasa, "Your wish was to have many friends, and you're okay with just one? That doesn't make sense." Not to mention when Souske went off on his own and was receiving help from Kou, Tsukasa punched him through the stomach. It seems he wants people to go through with their original wants, and not change up their plans where it is most convenient. After turning Souske into a monster, he claims that if Souske were to make Kou like him they could be friends forever. I truly think he meant this, he just had no concern for what would happen to Kou or the fact that Souske didn't really want to hurt him, he just wanted Souske to be the worst he could be with no restraint and then have him go after what he wanted. He wishes more people would act as he does. He truly lives by his own beliefs, and wants others to follow that doctrine.
After Hanako ended Souske, he wasn't too torn up about it. As I said, he's only really upset if people interrupt him. He was more happy to see his brother again. Also, it's violence against violence, why wouldn't he be for that? He likes it when people don't hold back.
What is overall end goal? What does he want? Well for right now, he sees it as a game of good vs evil. He wants himself and Hanako to "Play together" like they used to. Of course, them playing is more on the violent side this time around, but that doesn't mean he doesn't love him. Tsukasa adores his brother (he's upset when Yashiro says he's not her type), but he thinks that violently going against each other is a form of fun. He admits to Yashiro that he sees himself and his brother as arch-enemies, and he's fully embracing the role he's playing in this game they're playing. He went after Yashiro for two reasons, first to get to know her because she's friends with his brother (he fully thinks they're dating), second to go against her in this deadly game (get rid of her) because he sees her as playing this game as well. Sakura and himself vs Yashiro and his brother; he doesn't so much care for Natsuhiko and Kou, they're just there, they help out sometimes. The real opponents are them and their assistants. Getting rid of his assistant would give Tsukasa an advantage in this game they're playing, so of course it'd be the move he'd take.
Of course, he's not too torn about it when she survives. So what, they won that round; we're no longer playing that round, we're no longer addressing that round. It's also great as that means she can keep playing. He finds her quite fun, when he first met her he was impressed by her gusto and how she just went to attack him like that. He doesn't like it when she interrupts him, but he's learned to be gentle to girls. He usually goes after Nene when trying to influence what happens next on his brother's side. He put a spy on her to see how his brother handled a twisted rumor, he had Sakura influence her to go tothe 4pm bookstacks to learn more about his brother, and he used her donut gift to find a way to visit him.
This is because he's met her before, and thinks she's fun to play with. In the picture perfect arc, he even wished her luck in killing his brother, and sent her with Mei because she helped her realize her wish, untimely freeing her from her cell Hanako locked her in. He seems like he's on her side, as he seems to support whatever crazy idea she has; like when she's suddenly okay with dying, he tells Hanako to let her die or else he's being selfish and a hypocrite. Then again, when his brother gets the idea to break every Yorishiro and then get a wish to save her, he's all for that because that would mean much more chaos would be unleashed. So not exactly on her side, just in support of her usually not supported ideas. He just wants to see what she'd do in these trying situations, because he likes her gusto. Of course, he knows that breaking every Yorishiro would lead to her death, but he's okay with that; he was okay when he himself was murdered. He does know she doesn't like killing people, but if she does end up doing it, she has his full support. If not, well she's locked in the boundary until she does. He likes playing with her. We get to school festival arc, and Tsukasa from the past asks her to play with him again.
When time is frozen, it seems he's talking to her more than Hanako. Probably because Hanako knows most of what he's saying already. He does ask him if he would still save everyone even if meant bringing Yashiro closer to her death. Tsukasa wants him to break the Yorishiro and save everyone, it's why they broke the clock in the first place. However, he is curious on what they rather do in this situation.
Why does he do what he does in chapter 105? For starters, I think he just wanted to know what kissing was like. When he met Yashiro for the tea party and he though Sakura was dating his brother, he asked what the kisses were like, and said he heard they tasted like lemons. When that's cleared up, he asked Yashiro what his brother's kisses were like because he assumed they were dating. When that's cleared up, he asks Sakura if she would smooch him, and that was a no.
Now Yashiro and Hanako are frozen in time but still conscious, and Tsukasa is aware that they like each other (Did he see them kiss in the boundary? Maybe.) These guys aren't going to do anything, and he can do anything to them. He kisses Nene. Nene is mainly confused, as she usually is by what Tsukasa does, and Hanako is not just confused but also very upset by that. Tsukasa probably did that to know what kissing was like, but maybe to also know what's it like to kiss her (like his brother does), and lastly probably just to get a rise out of Hanako. Yeah, I don't think he likes Nene like that. He likes her as another player of the game and thinks she's interesting, but probably only kissed her because of Hanako's feelings for her, to make him feel more helpless. He does seem pretty happy after he does it, probably because it was nice, and it satisfied his curiosity.
After the kiss, he kidnaps her, saying "You're my assistant now, okay?" He already has an assistant, and Yashiro doesn't even owe him anything, so she's not bound to him. Tsukasa is an honest guy, but I'm not sure how much of this he truly meant. It probably means he's going to keep her, and maybe force her to do what he wants like with Sumire and #6. He might be expecting Hanako to try to save her, but Hanako doesn't know where his hideout is. Also the two of them are frozen, can Tsukasa get Nene out of it? How is he expecting Hanako to get out of it? These things I don't know. If he can't get Nene out of it, he probably just wants to keep her frozen body around. If he can, he might force her to destroy #1's Yorishiro. If Hanako doesn't get out of it, everyone will be in frozen torment for eternity, which could be nice. If he does, he'd need Yashiro to destroy the Yorishiro, unless they force #1 to destroy it themselves.
Another thing I'm not sure about: he's a yorishiro. If he's destroyed he'll cease to exist, so he won't get to see that world he want's to see so badly or finish his game. Did that slip his mind? Probably not. My guess is that he wants to have a final battle with Hanako, and the winner will see the world come to fruition and win the game. Maybe he'll be content enough that the world of chaos will come to pass even if he won't get to see it. Maybe since Hanako doesn't want to hurt him again, he try to force Yashiro's hand.
Anyways, with Tsukasa as a villain I'm a little excited to see how things will play out, and also a little horrified.

A controversial post about the Yugi twins

"Could u explain and talk about the 2 first pictures please"
The two pictures:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not long ago I received an ask about the connection between "eating" and "sex" that exists in JSHK in a very metaphorical way, if you're interested in seeing it, just click here
I will confess that I postponed creating this post a long time ago, but I realized that we need to talk about this. A lot of people ask me about their relationship, so I felt the need to be completely honest with my point of view about them.
Content warning: incest, cannibalism, sex
Important notes: This post exists solely for the purpose of analyzing the behavior and relationships between the characters, it is not a ship, nor an encouragement to do the same as them. Nothing I say here demonstrates my personal preference about the situation, again, it's just an analysis.
You must have already realized that the relationship between the twins is not an ordinary relationship, right? You must have found at least one or two strange behavior between them, but you chose to let it go, maybe this is a twins thing?
It will be?
Let's remember a little about what I said about the link between sex and hunger, Aidairo tends to use a lot of scenes referring to sex quite frequently and also talks explicitly about cannibalism, it's common for you to notice that cannibalism is also a metaphor for sex, like in the scene between Hakubo and Sumire, I explain it better in the post I mentioned.
Let's remember that supernaturals like to devour, eat, whether other supernaturals or humans, especially humans. It is quite obvious that the sexual connotation between the one who devours and the one who is devoured has to do with the characters' relationship.
So let's focus on the twins' relationship. They were born human, they know what it is to love and how relationships between humans work. Unlike someone who was born as a supernatural and has no idea how it works (like in the case of Hakubo).
Despite this, Tsukasa spent more time with the supernaturals than Amane, who only became close to the supernaturals later, and in addition, he encountered them very early. At four years old, Tsukasa, like any other child, doesn't really know what is right or wrong. He learned from that creature, and one of his principles is that you should be able to do whatever you want, even if it's selfish.
So, in the first phase of Tsukasa's life, we always see him blushing around Amane, it's really very common. He has a great love for his brother, but he doesn't really know what kind of love it is. He's just happy with what Amane offers him, while Tsukasa offers everything, even himself. Then, he returns as a supernatural, he returns home with that thing rooted in his chest.
He would now have the same hunger that supernaturals have. So let's travel a little to the future, we see Amane with suspicious injuries on his neck, cheek, mouth
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yes, mouth
Tumblr media
So….
Tumblr media
The rope marks on the wrists.
We still see Tsukasa blush when he looks at, or talks about Amane.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
What is Tsukasa's favorite snack?
Tumblr media
Does it seem to make sense?
When Amane transformed into Hanako, he began to demonstrate strong sexual desires for Nene, and perhaps, who knows, the desire to literally devour her, as he is a supernatural. The human part desires her sexually, and the supernatural part wants to satisfy his hunger.
Why is Hanako's appetite so strong? He holds back so much it's obvious.
So, about Tsukasa. He once told Nene, blushing, that they two are the same, this right after she said that she liked Amane, romantically speaking.
Tumblr media
So let's talk about how apparently in love Tsukasa is with Amane. Yes, in love. In a romantic way.
I know, it's weird to think about, but we have some evidence. And believe me, he's not the only one. Amane also appears to have romantic feelings for Tsukasa.
The way Tsukasa usually touches Amane/Hanako, the way he usually blushes when he's around him,… Oh, let me show you more explicitly
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, to complement, let's talk about Sumire and Hakubo. Sumire saw Hakubo as her husband from the beginning, and she treated him as such ever since. We saw throughout her arc that their relationship worked that way, even if Hakubo didn't quite understand (after all, he was born supernatural, and had never learned about love). Hakubo has killed several times and none of them were in the same way as he did to Sumire.
There is a clear and obvious sexual connotation in this scene, it is the moment when he asks to take her as his wife, she is initially scared, and the way he does it, the way he likes, devouring every little piece of her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She was his yorishiro, and to destroy her he had to devour her.
Do you know who else is a yorishiro?
Tsukasa
And who owns this yorishiro?
Hanako.
Tsukasa apparently doesn't want them to intrude at a time when it will be necessary to destroy him. Sakura made Yashiro see what happened to Sumire after she was devoured, but she did it hidden from Tsukasa (Apparently)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tsukasa wants to resolve this between them. So, if Nene doesn't remove Tsukasa's seal, Hanako will have to devour him.
Yes, in the same way as Hakubo and Sumire.
Can you see better now?
How about if I show you this art from chapter 100
Tumblr media
Doesn't that mean Hanako will have to devour him? Remember the sexual connotation of the scene. The way Hanako is positioned over Tsukasa, the way Tsukasa's hand is touching his lips….
This position, Hanako likes it a lot…. Who does he use this position with most often?
Tumblr media
Besides being the same position in which he killed Tsukasa, isn't this a suggestive position for sex?
Tumblr media
Hahaha, I think you understand now.
Amane and Tsukasa feel human and supernatural desires, the hunger they feel (but don't usually show) exists, we often see them yearning for each other, what kind of things didn't Amane do to meet Tsukasa's needs?
So, Amane being Tsukasa's "snack" could refer to the fact that he used to eat Amane at certain times (without gravity) perhaps to satisfy his desire and Tsukasa not hurt other people (when they were 12/13 years old)
After all, it doesn't matter, he always forgives, isn't that what he said?
Tumblr media
A relationship of love, resentment, unrequited desires, passion.
So, in summary… Apparently the twins are or once were in love with each other, or at least feel a strong attraction between them. The desire that exists in them is reflected in a sexual way or through hunger. As humans and as supernaturals. They are like Hakubo and Sumire, one day Hanako will devour Tsukasa, so, if we take into account the metaphor that "eating" is similar to 'Sex', you can imagine what will happen between them.
Remembering again, this is an analysis of their behavior. Unfortunately I wasn't able to include all the photos I wanted due to the image limit
Initially, this is the impression it gives about their relationship. I didn't mention the AUS, nor the extras, which emphasize this even more. I also didn't elaborate on this in more depth because I don't know if you would feel uncomfortable about it.
It may be that in the future more information about them will appear and refute this… impression about their relationship….
Anyway, I'm going to stop here (although I have many other things to explore about this topic) because this is a response post, so I hope you didn't feel uncomfortable with the content.
If you want, I can better develop a post just to talk about the twins' relationship with this topic.

Character Design talks: Hanako kun
Tumblr media
Hanako or better yet Amane Yugi is the titular character of the manga. He has an interesting design that makes me want to do a post about it. To be honest I did not anticipate doing a character design analysis on Hanako since I don’t have any knowledge of Japanese culture. His design is influenced by Japanese culture which is going to be difficult to explain since I’m not a huge expert on Japanese culture.
Two prominent things about Hanako are prevalent in his design, one is his school uniform and the two ghost orbs swirling around him.
Tumblr media
The first thing I am going to talk about is the clothes Hanako wears Hanako wears a stylized male school uniform a typical old style of Japanese uniform called a gakuen. The Gakuen is a black stand-up collar and hat that are usually worn by male students and are used for many middle and high school boys in japan. Hanako stands out from the other characters due to his old Gakuen winter uniform he wears in the summer. The winter Gakuen school uniform contrasts with the summer uniforms the characters wear. The Gakuen put more contrast to the modern blazers the male characters wear, making him stand out.
Hanako came from the Showa period, the Showa era takes place after WW2, the period when Japan was getting modernized and mingling with traditional Japanese culture. The Showa period referenced had the Event when the first moon landed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The origin of the Hanako school uniform is complicated to tell since the school uniform has a long history
Tumblr media
that dates back to the 1880s. The school uniform wasn’t introduced until the Meiji period school uniforms started in 1886. The Gakuen evolved from the Japanese military uniforms and adapted the design for boys' uniforms. It's militaristic because it is based on a military guard The Gakuen that Hanako wears is based on a naval uniform from the military. Hanako wears a cape though not to be badass or not only to demonstrate his power as a school wonder but the cape in the uniform and coat is militaristic.
Tumblr media
Hanako's school uniform is based on a typical showa era school uniform, the details of it are seen in Hanako's Gakuen the buttons are located on the Gakuen form of collars
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the gold buttons that are on the sleeves a school year logo on them with the kanji for the middle which reference to Hanako school year number. Hanako wears a formal cap. I pointed out before that his uniform came from the naval uniform. Hanako is seen wearing a cap at the school entrance along with his brother.
Tumblr media
Hanako wears a cape though not to be badass or not only to demonstrate his power as a school wonders if the cape in the uniform and coat is militaristic; it's something that is worn in the Showa period.  During the Showa period school students wore high collars and sailor uniforms which is what they wear during the period.
Tumblr media
Hanako wears an old-style Gakuen uniform since male students wearing blazers didn’t become popular until the late 1970s. Hanako's uniform is old-fashioned since his school uniform is from that period. The old-style Gakuen uniform references that he used to be a student at the academy but died suddenly.
The second thing in his design is a couple of pairs of ghost orbs.
Tumblr media
In Japanese media, ghosts are accompanied by flaming orbs which are called hitodama.
Tumblr media
Nene refers to them as hitodama; the two hakujodai resemble hitodama.
Tumblr media
Hitodama is the spirit of the dead. They are often described as deceased humans in Japanese. They look like balls of flame to Japanese people. This is what it should look like taking the form of flames. This is a clear note of Hanako being a ghost since he is followed by his hitodama or hakujodai. The hakujodai have a functional purpose for Hanako if you look at the Japanese they are called Tsueshiro means "cane replacement”
Tumblr media
This points out how they act as servants carrying out his orders when he attacks or to detect used to teleport that given location to another is in how Hanako is a powerful school wonder who has connections to god.
The hat on Hanako has a purpose. Someone pointed out that the hat is a metaphor for Hanako’s vulnerability, Hanako wears the hat to mask his vulnerability and it was taken off at Hanako's more serious moments in the manga. Nene comments that Hanako looks like a normal boy without his hat this is supposed to enforce that he's a normal boy.
Tumblr media
Speaking of normal boys this is something I am going to go over, if you take away his outfit and hat Hanako has a basic hairstyle his hairstyle is very plain,
Tumblr media
and that's to enforce that he's a normal boy if you think about it Hanako does have a plain design if he isn’t wearing the Gakuen uniform.
Tumblr media
Another thing in his hair other than being very basic. He has straight black hair, hair that has a straight cut is straight hair. It resembles a hime cut in his design as you see in traditional Japanese characters' hairstyles. It references that Hanako comes from a traditional Japanese household with his mother seen in a kimono.
Tumblr media
The seal on Hanako’s cheek is a talisman, which is a seal reference to his background about how Ko's grandmother sealed away most of his powers. Most of Hanako's powers are sealed away.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hanako has a main shape which is a circle, circles are associated with rounded shapes and his round eyes are circles due to the shape.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The circle references the moon due to the roundness of the moon having prominence with Hanako. Circles in character design are optimistic, emotional, childlike, cheerful, selfless, and expressive. Circles are expressly used for drawing emotional, expressive characters Hanako is as expressive as the main cast. He comes off as cheerful and seems smiling all the time making jokes at everyone's expense he hides a great deal of wisdom as seen when he explains certain things to Nene and Ko which could be his experience as a supernatural. when Nene becomes infatuated with someone He displays childish bouts of jealousy and becomes possessive of her. Hanako has a lot of vulnerability underneath. He has a great deal of guilt, regrets, and pain which is hidden by his smile. circles are used for children and are used for making childlike characters that reference his actual age which fits the tragic setting with Hanako since Hanako was 13 when he died. Hanako has selfless qualities to him. If you compare Hanako and Tsukasa together, he is much more benevolent and compassionate. He displays his kindness when he interacts with Nene and Ko.there are moments in the manga where it demonstrates Hanako's compassion when he saves them on numerous occasions, gives them advice, and helps them out. He wouldn’t hesitate to use force if someone close to him is being threatened. He is considerate of others, thinking about nenes' feelings first before his own and wanting her to live.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of the features in Hanako’s design is his big round eyes. On closer inspection, his eyes resemble the moon. The moon is considered a circle because of its shape and round eyes are more circular. His irises have crescent moon shapes in the eyes when you look closely. The series referenced historical events that happened many times and one of them is when mankind first landed on the moon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The moon is a prominent aspect of Hanako’s character, this design detail represented his wish of wanting to go to the moon but never getting to.
As I stated before I may not be entirely correct about Hanako’s character design in this post because I am limited in my knowledge of Japanese culture. Feel free to add or correct if you think I’m wrong; I would appreciate it.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Such a perfect example of a vicious cycle.
“a sequence of reciprocal cause and effect in which two or more elements intensify and aggravate each other, leading inexorably to a worsening of the situation.”
Like the repetition of his mind bringing him back to their death day. Like the same reason for Tsukasa wanting to disappear is why Amane killed him in the first place.
Tumblr media
Tsukasa doesn’t have a reason to stay, he never has had one. Ever since he was little he thought his brother hated him, he thought his family would be better without him in the picture. That’s why he sacrificed himself. For their sake, for Amane’s happiness. That was his reason to go.
It still is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Amane wants a wish, and the price is Tsukasa.
But Amane still doesn’t want to let go of him. From the very start, or when Tsukasa first disappeared, it probably made him not want the same thing to happen. For Tsukasa to leave him again.
Tumblr media
I believe this is the same thing Amane’s been trying to prevent from happening.
( Theorizing ) The murder was for them to be together, to never seperate. After death Hanako made sure to deem Tsukasa his yorishiro, so he wouldn’t try ‘escaping’.
Maybe that’s his physiology. He thinks Tsukasa is trying to leave him like he did the first time. Maybe it would have happened again when they were human, and he wouldn’t let go, so he did the only thing he could think of to make sure Tsukasa wouldn’t leave him ever again.
But, oh.. Just for it to repeat again. This same quarrel between them, the same problem.
Tsukasa thinks Amane would be better off without him, and Amane thinks Tsukasa doesn’t want them to be together.
They’re both just pushing each other’s assumptions further. Tsukasa says “So?” as if he doesn’t care, to Hanako at least. And Hanako says “I hate you” like he actually means it, and to Tsukasa, he does.
TBHK really is just a story of problem after problem building higher and higher without any solution, for now.
But, you gotta love twins, right? :))

*deep inhale* so chapter 91. May I humbly share my thoughts with you?
I am very excited about this “God” character that has been mentioned since the beginning to FINALLY be a plot device to ‘solving’ the problem that is Nene’s lifespan.
Tumblr media
However, I'm fairly uncertain if that is the big problem here. I do adore Nene as a protagonist for being a fresh take as neither being strong nor skillful as another protagonist commonly in shounen series, yet (same with Kou) having a strong moral despite the world being against them.
But the ‘big problem’ or rather obstacle is this ‘God’ themself for the characters. Yashiro is planned to die because of fate and cannot be with Hanako in life or death because he is supernatural. The same goes for Kou and Mitsuba as Mitsuba has stayed off the path to be human where the ‘only way’ the two could be together is for Kou to die. Hanako and the other mysteries are as they are because they were chosen by God to serve as protectors of Kamome. After all, it is its ancient grounds. The Minamoto brothers could not have a normal life because they were tasked to eliminate supernaturals that harm humans and for all we know about this God they intend to set correct relations between the dead and living.
This is a fragment of what I’ve been thinking about for the past months to now have the urge to express it thanks to the new chapter. (plus I don't want to make this ask too long) Tsukasa possibly wants to change the way God rules being I vaguely remember a chapter where after Mistuba’s wish was granted (I'll paraphrase) he wanted a world where supernatural and human coexist. Why? We don’t know that either and could speculate until the next chapter comes but we know he needs Amane and Yashiro to get him there to God.
My questions in general.
1.) Did God pick the mysteries specifically on their connections with humans?
2.) Will God play a figure as Hanako’s growth and possible future being Yashiro has influence on his humanity or will it not being Tsukasa calls bullshit for using his power for selfish reasons?
3.) I doubt Yashiro will want to continue to destroy the Yorishiros but I can see her turning the tables and wish God for something else and as, it’s been hinted, what relation does she have with God?
4.) Mitsuba???
If you read this, thank you www- I appreciate you taking the time
Wow! Okay, I wanted to wait until after I did my 'analysis' post to really dig into this but I did all that, and now it's your turn!
My first real thought here is that we've only ever heard of one being referred to as 'god' by the Yugi twins. The thing we generally call the Red House Entity, or what Tsukasa called 'the god under the house'. There are probably others! Logically, there are probably at least two gods in this series! But we've only actually got solid evidence that one of them exists.
Understand a hell of a lot is dependent on the nature of as-yet-unrevealed lore. Do the Mysteries serve someone? Are they something that the Minamoto clan set up in decades past, as an alternative to the sacrifices? We don't actually KNOW.
(Fun bit of speculation: What if Yorimitsu Minamoto is the power behind the Wonders? From what Six says, he certainly had the power to do that if he wanted to. And hey, SOMEONE had to recruit Six to the job... but you get my point. There's not a lot we know.)
So let's go with what we DO know.
The RHE is connected to 'the pit', where the kannagi were sacrificed in centuries past. The RHE grants wishes in return for sacrifices; the bigger the sacrifice, the bigger the wish that can be granted.
A severance is basically 'sacrifice a special human to temporarily block off the mortal world from the supernatural world'. It's...a wish. Like any other wish.
Tsukasa is very, very tied to the RHE. And may well want the entity to be free to do as it pleases, which may well be 'let supernaturals run rampant so that the locals offer it The Good Sacrifices again'.
Hanako is to all appearances afraid of the RHE. (Given how his family died, he may well have EXTREMELY good reasons to be.) But he's also very, very pragmatic. If the RHE is the biggest game in town, I could see Hanako going along with it.
But I'm speculating.
What's hanging on my mind just now is how much of the entire plot seems to hinge on the fact that Amane and Tsukasa are identical twins. They don't necessarily want the same things, but if asked to plot out how to GET what they want, they seem to think along broadly the same lines.
Case in point: At the outset, Hanako says he wants to atone for murdering his brother. Tsukasa says he wants supernaturals to be free to be however they want to be. Tsukasa drives Two crazy; Hanako unseats her. Because Tsukasa did that (proving he COULD do that) Hanako then moves on to 'unseat all the Wonders' - which in turn means that when Obon rolls around, the supernaturals can rampage just like Tsukasa wants. But oh! Six is in the way of a rampage! Tsukasa plots to remove Six - and when Hanako and Yashiro get entangled in Six's boundary, Hanako very nearly does Tsukasa's job for him, but Yashiro won't destroy the yorishiro. But Hanako uses Six's sacrifice to extend Yashiro's lifespan, and that brings the Minamotos raging across a Severance to take Six out and undo Hanako's work...doing Tsukasa's work instead.
You see? They're not working together, and yet at the same time both of them have gotten a lot closer to what they WANT by pinging off whatever the other one's doing. I can at present only attribute this to them being identical twins, and thus thinking in similar ways even toward different goals.
And now they seem to have the same goal, even if it's for different reasons. Tsukasa still wants rampaging supernaturals (which means No Wonders) and Hanako wants to save Yashiro (meaning he's got to win the Wish from God). But both of them need to destroy yorishiros to get what they want, and Yashiro's the only one so far who's proven able to do that.
I am very, very curious as to whether she'll take that step onto the slippery slope in order to live. In theory she could swing Hanako back to absolutely opposing his brother by simply genuinely accepting her death and heading to the Far Shore - meaning the only way Hanako ever sees her again is if he fulfills his original duty, lets go of his guilt and regret, and passes on to join her there.
I don't think that'll happen. At the same time, I just can't see her leaping to rip the seal off Sumire, depower Three, or depower Akane either. Yashiro's never had to make a hard choice of this kind before. I can't really predict what she'll do.
And all of this also ties back to Kou - if he wants to be a supernatural, well, he's been handed a golden opportunity. But will he take it? Akane and Teru still seem to be down for the count. But consider Hanako's warning; becoming a supernatural changes you, sometimes in unpredictable ways. If Kou does take that step, he may no longer be one of the Toilet Trio.
Nene and Kou have been saved, thus far, from making any truly serious decisions. Other people always took up that gauntlet for them. But now they're going to have to choose for themselves, and the story's going to hinge on what they do and how.

I wanna preface this by saying I don’t hate Hanako OR Teru, but I find it interesting that fans single out Teru’s threat to kill Nene when Hanako was trying to do the same thing to Aoi
In fact, that’s literally the entire context of the scene and the reason Teru made that threat in the first place. Hanako was actively trying to kill Aoi so Nene could live longer, whereas Teru never made any actual attempts on Nene’s life. The whole “I’ll kill Yashiro” line was an empty threat made to force Hanako to realize the gravity of his actions. Teru wanted Hanako to put himself in his shoes, to show him that it doesn’t feel very nice when someone tries to kill the girl you love
I highly doubt Teru would’ve actually killed Nene, he clearly wasn’t thinking about it seriously since he intended to exorcize Hanako directly after that speech. Even when Hanako asked if he was serious, Teru’s response was “Maybe.” That doesn’t sound very committed to me. He was more-so trying to stress the lengths he would go to protect Aoi. The scene shows that him and Hanako are both hypocrites, but Teru seems to be a lot more self-aware than Hanako. They both follow the same logic of taking on the “dirty jobs” themselves so their loved ones don’t have to get blood on their hands. And they’re both willing to go to extremes to protect the girls they love (though, again, I’m unsure of whether or not Teru would actually kill a human for Aoi)
I find it funny that Teru and Hanako fans beef so often, and that fans of either character always seem to hate the other. They’re similar in so many ways. I do understand hating Hanako for the pervert gags but, then again, you could just as easily hate Teru for the sadist gags
Anyways a lot of the scenes people use as “Teru is irredeemably evil” proof are taken out of context or deeply misunderstood. I’m not sure how, seeing as this manga is fairly on the nose with the points it makes about each character. It might be that a lot of the fans are younger?? Idk, I just think we should stop pitting these goats against each other

Backstory
While not everything is known about Hanako or his twin brother Tsukasa, we do have some outlines for their backstory. These being that long ago Hanako, who was once known as Amane, fell very ill when he was a mere toddler. His mother was distraught at these news that he was not meant to last more than a month. However later it is shown that the boy lived to his birthday on November 25. This is also where we find out that his brother made a wish to an entity that he later tells Amane lives under their home. We don’t know the type or name of said entity (As far as I know), only that it has apparently taken the place of Tsukasa in return for fulfilling his wish for Amane to get better. Later on in flashbacks, Amane is shown to be bruised in a certain manga panel. These bruises on his neck and arms hint that these could possibly be hickey’s from a S*xual assault. His shirt being unbuttoned in this flashback also hints to this. Tsuchigomori’s yorishiro being destroyed reveals that his yorishiro was given to him BY Amane Yugi. A moonrock that Amane said was quite precious to him and his love of space and the stars. In this flashback it is shown that Amane is still consistently being harmed by something, however he won’t fess up as to who or what it is, and says he doesn’t mind it. He then proceeds to tell his teacher he wants to go to the moon, but then decides he is never going anywhere, never leaving the school. Tsuchigomori proceeds to tell Nene that he peaked into Amane’s records of the future, finding that the boys love of the stars would manifest into him becoming a science teacher. It is later shared that he died, changing his fate and being the first person to do so. Amane now resides as the seventh of the seven wonders, Hanako the wish granting bathroom ghost. But how did Amane become Hanako? What were his regrets that led him to becoming a supernatural? And why a school mystery instead of something like the original Mitsuba’s ghost?
Personality
So..to put it simply, Hanako is a very manipulative, somewhat self centered, and reckless person. He’s not only manipulative, but cunning as well. And a huge liar at almost any moment. This is first shown in the very beginning, first being when Kou discovered Nene’s limited ammount of time left to live. Hanako admitted to pretending to care about them in his own special way, but in the end it makes no difference to him who lives and who dies. Now this could have been just him trying to hide his feelings for Nene, but i genuinely believe that maybe apart from her, he really doesn’t care. He may pretend to and put on a show to look good and heroic, but in the end, as Teru said, he is still an apparition with evil personality traits. This particular ghost is also destroying yorishiro’s for the apparent reason of making sure they cannot be manipulated by Tsukasa’s rumour change. Tsuchigomori adds to this idea by stating that if it were lesser supernaturals then it wouldn’t matter, but they were affecting the wonders. Now why Tsukasa would target the wonders will be left for his own analysis. But why did Hanako think destroying their yorishiro’s and then reappointing them was the best option? And if he destroys all of them until only he is left, he is the only one left to target. But he wouldn’t be able to reinstate the other wonders if he were to destroy his own yorishiro, Tsukasa. However in recent chapters it is shown that Hanako, Tsukasa, and Nene are on a mission to destroy all of the yorishiro’s so that Hanako can wish for Nene’s life span to extend. Perhaps this shows that maybe he *Does* care for only her as he is risking his forgiveness of his sin for her life. Or perhaps he will not succeed because he cannot stand the thought of destroying Tsukasa again. Or even more, before it was for the reason to extend Nene’s life span, it was to grant his own wish of forgiveness. And it may still be that, he could be lying again! We won’t know for a while. As for his reckless personality, in the Sacrifice of the Grim Reaper arc Hanako is shown to not care whatsoever about supernatural’s flooding into the school even though HE is supposed to be responsible for them. Does he want students injured?? Does he want supernaturals to be the superior race? We may never know. And even further than that, he takes things to the extreme length to get what he wants. Sacrificing Nene’s best friend in order to save her, which he knows she wouldn’t want, he even admits that he knows she wouldn’t agree to that which is why he did it without permission. And up until the very moment he disappeared during the severance, he was giving off psychopathic vibes. His eyes were black like Tsukasa’s often are, hinting that maybe something within him wasn’t right. And he was so happy for a hot second there?? It could have been an act, but he was hiding things from Nene which lead to her falling into bad mental health after he disappeared. Which leads me to my final statement...He is ALWAYS hiding things and doing things on only his opinion!!! Nene’s life span, Aoi’s sacrifice, The picture perfect arc, he is a pathological liar!! The picture perfect Arc is one of the best ways to show that he takes things to the extreme to get what he wants, even attempting to trap Nene in a fake world forever, but also saying it was for Kou as well....overall I think he’s quite interesting in terms of personality, but very complex as well.
I will be adding more things later!! Two sections will be added, to give you hints, one will be titled “Amane” and the other “Tsuchigomori”
Thank you for listening and reading!!

We don't need Yugi's flashback because their story has been told for a long time. (an analysis) Part 2.
3. Hakubo and Sumire. Mystery and yorishiro continue. How does this relate to Yugi?
Tsukasa is also a sacrifice to the demon hole in exchange for a wish, also a yorishiro in the form of a human. There is a difference in how Sumire was betrayed against her will, while Tsukasa died of his own free will.
Tumblr media
Tsukasa sat alone in Hanako's boundary for a long time, calling for him, but he never came.
Tumblr media
Most likely, Tsukasa has not met Amane since the very day of his death, and when he appears in the chapter with donuts, this is really the first time he was able to go free and enter the plot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tsukasa, unlike Sumire, is sure that Amane hates him, and does not consider himself significant to him, he is surprised when Amane begins to cry.
Tumblr media
Tsukasa is also tired of his existence, he just has some goals that still keep him afloat, but having achieved them, he is just as ready to disappear if it will help others, close to him.
Tumblr media
What is so good about Amane, because he is unbearable? Why did Tsukasa and Nene love him so much? Here it is, the irony. Sumire had no options, Nene and Tsukasa still get along with people easier
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and nevertheless, love is blind.
Tsukasa is very unrestrained, and probably because he finally got out of prison and can control his and even other people's actions. Tsukasa does not ask to be remembered, but deep down he also wants at least some recognition of his value. Amane also suffers that he acted this way towards Tsukasa, he blames himself a lot, but at the same time also shifts part of the blame to his brother.
Tumblr media
After all, it is his fault that he is fake, if everything were different, if Amane had lived a different life, he would not have done this. He, just like Hakubo, did not value the time he spent with his brother, and now he is stewing in his own guilt, while leaving Tsukasa alone in the locked boundary and not answering his call.
4. Aoi and Akane. Close since childhood.
These two were close like twins, growing up together since childhood. Aoi was a shy girl, while Akane was more easily approached by people, and as a result, she remained in his shadow.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At first, they grew up like normal children, and both acted completely normal, until one fateful day came...
Tumblr media
The Clock Keepers recruited Akane by threatening to kill Aoi, and thus, he made a contract with them, becoming half-supernatural.
Tumblr media
Here, I want to refer to the theory of friend if mine that Aoi died that day and Akane sacrificed his lifespan for her. [But he doesn't remember it. Come to think of it, the flashback abruptly ends with "do you want to gain the power to control time?", continuing the story from the perspective of an unreliable narrator - Akane. I say "unreliable" because it was easy for him to have his memory erased, or even have some of his memories fabricated.
Tumblr media
It's worth remembering that the senior guardian can actually rewind time, deleting unnecessary memories. And I don't believe that the guardians of the clock choose a third one for fun. They probably have some kind of selection criteria. Besides, Akane is literally half supernatural, and I don't think that will go unnoticed. Most likely, his days are numbered, like Yashiro's. Maybe he wasn't supposed to die in the first place, but he probably sacrificed his lifespan to correct a terrible misunderstanding. He thinks that after graduation he will simply stop being a guardian of the clock and return to his normal life, but what if everything is played out in such a way that he does not remember the first and most important point of his contract: in exchange for Aoi's life, he gave up his future?]
Also, Akane is very traumatized by what happened. I already said that the reason why he clings to Aoi so madly could be his trauma that day. Just like how Tsukasa got fixated on the idea of "knowing more about Amane" because he discussed it before Kou traumatized him with his revelation, Akane got fixated on the idea of "enjoying the time spent with Aoi and confessing my love to her because I love her and want to be with her" because he also talked about it with Aoi before the Guardians put her in danger.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That's why he doesn't act like a normal person anymore, and that's why he's becoming less and less like his calm younger self. Akane made a contract with a supernatural in exchange for the life of a loved one and became half supernatural, changing internally, but mostly because of the trauma and fear of losing Aoi rather than the effects of the supernatural specifically.
The boy who came back to Aoi after that day was a slightly different person. He acted differently and hid a lot of things, and that's why there was a distance between them that grew wider as the years went by. This isn't an "Akane is hiding something" level problem, it's an "Akane has really changed a lot" level problem.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So Aoi, who was initially comfortable around him, starts to feel weird. She stops being playful and teasing around him like she used to because Akane has become so obsessed with the idea that she's slowly starts pushing him away.
Tumblr media
Eventually, the tension reaches a breaking point and Aoi is pushed to such a stalemate that she lays hands on the person closest to her, Akane, because she thinks that will solve her problem.

One of the things I really like with Nene and Kou, is how insensitive they can be to others characters. Absolutely unwillingly all the time.
And on the other side, we have Teru and Hanako. Stating the harsh realities and coming off as insensitive so they can get shocking reactions, and force people to understand.
Teru and Hanako are annoyed and look down at people for not knowing things, even if they are the ones who refuse to share the information they have most of the time. When they decide to do so, it’s mostly because the person in front of them has no idea what they are talking about.
Tumblr media
In chapter 85, when Teru said he was going to kill Nene to Hanako. We all know that he wasn’t gonna do it at all, his main mission is to protect humans after all. He only said it, in the most shocking way, to give Hanako another perspective and make him realize what he did. Even if he was planning to instantly exorcize him just after, Teru needed to say all of this, so Hanako could understand how wrong he was.
It’s normal for Teru to act like this towards Hanako, he doesn’t like him after all.
Tumblr media
Most of the time, when he needs to let the truth out, he isn’t happy about it. Especially to people he cares about. He is distressed when he has to announce Aoi is dead to Akane, or when he has to make Kou realize how weak he is. Letting his emotions show way more than people give him credits for.
For Hanako it’s a bit different.  Both Teru and him still want to be loved at the end of the day, despite what they do and knowing how some things are wrong. But compared to Teru, Hanako also wants to be hated. He knows what he does is wrong, and wants people to despise him for it. He is awful with Nene and with Kou. With Kou to make him move, to obtain a reaction out of him because even if he never said it out loud, he trusts him.
Tumblr media
And with Nene, because he desperately wants to keep her away from him, despite wanting to be the (only) one doing everything for her. He wants to keep her at a distance to ‘protect her’, while being her savior and having the most important role in her life.
Tumblr media
He knows Kou and Nene are good kids, so it’s easy to say things who will shock them.
Teru and Hanako tend to have this belief that they need to carry all responsibilities, while keeping everyone in their ignorance, to better protect them.
So they come off as insensitive, wanting people to let them be in charge, and getting angry when they go against their plans.
Ignorance is a gift, and the best protection to exist in their opinion. Teru is not saying anything to anyone. Hanako is doing the same and thinking that time and memory loss would fix everything, and that it’s better to make humans live in a sugar coated version of reality.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Teru and Hanako act insensitively to get the reactions they want or to prove their points. They KNOW what they are talking about, only letting glimpse of the truth and letting all of it out when they want to.
On the other hand, Nene and Kou are insensitive because of their ignorance.
They know nothing about what they are talking about, what is the true meaning of being supernatural, or the real value of life. The knowledge Teru and Hanako have, or at least acknowledge way more.
They say things that are so stupid at their core, which always come from great intentions. But they really end up hurting people thinking they are doing the greater good.
Teru was harsh with Kou when he said he was on Nene’s side, going against his brother’s plan and putting them into trouble.
Hanako gets annoyed , and has the need to put them in place, whenever Kou or Nene are over the top optimistic. He always has to put them back in place when they ignore the fact he killed someone.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nene has no idea what she is talking about half of the time, and this is normal, she is learning and no one is telling her anything.
They are both very naive at their core, thinking that motivation and love will save everything. It is something Hanako loves a lot, it’s important to have people who are optimistic, they both seem to value life and enjoy it and always see the good part of everything.
Tumblr media
But the more the story progresses, the less Hanako talks. He lost all trust in Kou in the perfect picture arc, realizing that nothing is better than actions, and that Kou had no idea what he was talking about. Strong will to talk about big opportunities and futures, but unable to really achieve any plans.
Kou always talks big about everything, taking way too much work he has no idea how to deal with. And he fails, a lot. He is always a step behind compared to the other characters, and he tends to acknowledge it more and more. Mitsuba is always annoyed at how much Kou is taking, and how big he talks despite not being able to do anything.
Tumblr media
And Kou’s lack of self confidence is not helping him, transforming even sometimes in absolute lack of self awareness and preservation. He wants to do good, but ends up saying absolutely nonsensical things to Mitsuba or Hanako because he has no real idea what he is supposed to do to make things change.
Tumblr media
It’s no wonder Kou is taking Mitsuba’s request badly in chapter 99, when he has been trying so hard to do the right things, and can’t seem to succeed in any of them.
Kou’s wish is to make everyone happy, but he still can’t accept Mitsuba’s request, because it would just prove one thing. That he has failed.
Kou and Nene are just not good at executing plans right from start to end, because they lack comprehension and knowledge.
A lot of their actions coming from good intentions, end up being absolute disasters.
Nene in her escape with Hanako, left her friends to deal with Aoi’s situation. She trusts Akane to take care of it, and Kou to take care of Teru. She never said anything about coming back to Kou, letting all of the responsibilities to deal with the others on him. She isn’t even aware what is happening to them when she is alone with Hanako, thinking she is doing the right thing. Not considering that Aoi will be left in the same position as her, being alive because her best friend died.
Tumblr media
She absolutely doesn’t get anything about Sumire’s situation, not saying entirely hurtful things, but being wrong on it from A to Z, because she lacks maturity. She refuses to listen to Sumire, when it’s not about Nene at all. Sumire has every right to make her own choices, even if they can come off as weird or horrible from Nene’s pov, but she doesn’t listen. Thinking that if she keeps looking, if she keeps avoiding what is supposed to happen, to find something ‘where no one will be hurt’, it will be better. It’s really coming from good intentions, Nene is a really nice person. But she has no idea how supernaturals work, and that their wants can be really different from humans.
She will be slapped in the face by the reality by Sakura just after, who won’t even deny that it’s partly her fault, even if she never wanted this to happen. To better manipulate her probably, but also because Sumire indeed already said she was okay with disappearing.
They have no idea what are the rules they are playing with. And it is a problem. They are slowly starting to realize that they are living a life they have no control over.
The more the story progresses the more they are aware of what is happening around them. They can’t make everyone happy, some people will be left behind, some will die or stay dead. They lost people during their adventures. They realize that not everyone can have a good end, that sometimes, they are absolutely hopeless and useless in some situations.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Especially in the red house, despite having found a way to go to the far shore. They had to let Katakuri and little Tsukasa behind, unable to change anything about their fates. And even being the ones creating messes while trying to do good. Saying to Tsukasa that Amane killed him or giving little Amane the wish tags so he can have his wish granted for example.
We can see them trying being more aware of what is happening. With Nene pretending to accept to die to make everything back in order, and Kou bursting into tears when he understands Mitsuba really wants him to exorcize him. They are more aware of the situations they are in and how cruel it can be.
Kou and Nene are good kids, with self confidence problems. But even with good intentions, they still make selfish decisions, which end up hurting the other persons they know and love.
They are more aware of the supernatural world, its consequences and injustices.
But they are still more optimistic than realistic. This optimism still helped them to manage to come out alive from all the situations they are in. They are slowly gaining maturity on different subjects and I can’t wait to see in which directions their choices will led them now.
