listen. hear me out. shadow not being able to talk properly and just mispronouncing/mumbling EVERYTHING when gerald first created them. i'm talking toddler/infant speaking level despite being like. above six years old when they first came out of that tube.

the adults who didn't like shadow using this as an excuse to ignore whatever the hedgehog has to say under the pretense of 'not being able to understand them', and not listening when shadow says they're hungry or that an experiment hurts.

maria teaching shadow how to speak and pronounce things right - it takes them a while, but eventually, shadow is the most well-spoken being on that ARK.

the adults hating maria for this because now they actually have to listen to what shadow has to say now because they can longer dismiss them due to them being unintelligible. they actually have to listen when shadow says 'that hurts!' or 'i want professor robotnik.' or 'i need water.'

and if they don't - well, shadow tells everything to maria, and maria brings up every little issue regarding shadow up to gerald, the lead scientist, who does everything to make sure maria is happy - which means making sure shadow is happy.

With the DC crossover announced and the images released, I figured that since most of the sonic cast are technically teens(??) it would be cool to see them as the teen heroes, too!! Here's Sonic as Impulse, Knuckles as Superboy, Amy as Wonder Girl, Tails as Robin, and Shadow as the blue Black Beetle!

Maddie [nods nervously]: Nice, nice… Rouge: What're you gonna miss when you're out on a mission? I always miss my wardrobe. Shadow [dryly]: Nothing. Rouge: Um. Really? I didn't mean only things. In fact, I think Mr Tom is happy I'm getting out of his hair-- Tom: Oh, I mean, I never actually-- Shadow: And Tails is still scared of me, so I guess he'll be very happy with the arrangement too. Tails: The night lamp was there before you even lived with us-- Shadow [starts to speak quickly]: And Sonic never really liked me, which is totally fair, because I almost wiped out his family and the planet he made his home. All in all, I'd say it's normal that everyone’s happy to hand me over to you. Maddie: Honey, you need to breathe-- Shadow: And surely, if one day I didn’t come back, they’d probably sigh in relief because they wouldn’t have to put up with me anymore. Maddie [kneels and hugs him tentatively]: Okay, okay, that's more than okay, sweetheart. Shadow: I don’t want to do this. I can't do this. I'm sorry. Abe: Are you kidding me? Tom: Hey. Abe: Sorry, sorry. [forces out a smile]: I can see you're upset, but are you kidding me? Tom: I think we should talk for a moment here. Abe: Yes, sure, talk with him-- Maddie: No, my husband meant you, sir. Abe: …Crap. [In an empty break room, Shadow is sitting at a table. Sonic hands him an herbal tea.] Sonic: Here you go. Shadow: Thank you. Sonic: I'll be in the hallway with the rest. Shadow: Okay. Sonic [turns to leave but stops. He inhales and turns to face him again]: I get it, you know? Shadow: …What do you get? Sonic: Why you don't want to do this. Shadow: I doubt that you do. Sonic: You're scared everything's gonna be the same and you're not realising until it's too late. And that you're gonna be some weapon instead of another agent like everybody else. Shadow: How do you know that? Sonic: 'Cause that's why I'm scared right now too. Shadow: If you're so scared then why do you keep working with them? Sonic: Because I'd rather be here and know as much as they let me than be outside and know nothing. Because I don't want what happened to you to ever happened again. To you or anyone else. Shadow: So you're telling me I should just do this to have more direct intel? Sonic: No, I'm telling you that whatever you decide, you're gonna have us. You'll be working with us and or living with us, that's not gonna change. And if they try something, you're going to have a whole army to defend you. Mum and Dad are tearing Towers a new one over there, Rouge has already taken you under her wing, pun intended, and Knux, Tails and I won't let anyone but us say anything mean to you. My point is, you've got a lot of people you can trust right now, okay? Shadow: …That's comforting to know. Sonic: That's why I said it, dumbass. [Maddie, Tom and Towers walk in the room] Abe: Shadow, I'm sorry if you felt pressured. You don't need to work or have anything to do with us. Shadow: I actually want to work with you. Not for you, but with you is okay. Abe: … [looks angrily at Tom and Maddie]: See? Are you seeing how he always have to antagonize me? Tom: Congratulations, you got yourself a teenager. Sonic: Four actually, [looks reassuringly at Shadow]: we're a package deal.

I’ve gotten so tired of the “Shadow the hedgehog is 50 years old 🤪” jokes because people use it as an excuse to draw porn of him, so I’m swinging violently in the opposite direction and saying there’s more evidence pointing to him being the youngest member of the cast then there is evidence that he’s an adult.

1: to get this out of the way, he was in STASIS for 50 years, so he did not age physically or mentally in that time.

2: in his Sonic Generations dlc we see that when shadow met Maria they both appear to be the same age, this implies that when shadow was “born” he had both his current mental age and his “teenager” type body.

3: Maria does not (at least visually) age between her first meeting with Shadow and when she dies on the Arc.

So with this information in mind Shadows actual age is based solely on how many years he had with Maria, which all things considered could be less than 1. There is a real tangible chance that the reason that he’s so unstable in SA2 isn’t just because he’s still mourning the loss of his best friend/sister but because she’s all he ever knew, he know her since the day he was born fully conscious, then she’s just gone. On top of that his entire world changed, if I lived in an environment with a complete lack of ambient noise and basically nothing but sterile empty halls and was suddenly on a planet with constant noise and bugs and weird smells I’d consider destroying everything, and that’s without the factor of still being in mourning.

Shadow may have the physique and mental fortitude of a 15-16 year old but clearly would not have any experience up to that point. This also explains why in the Shadow the Hedgehog game he’s so easily manipulated and influenced after losing his memory, he’s been set back to square one, he’s basically an infant.

Now this may have spawned as a “fuck you” to people sexualizing a fictional child but this explains so many quirks about him that I’m surprised that I haven’t seen more people talk about this or play into it in fan works, Shadow is basically a toddler in the body of a 9th grader given the power of a god, sure he’s smart enough to make decisions for himself but it wouldn’t surprise me if there’s huge gaps in his knowledge still even after living on earth for as long as he has.

In conclusion, let Shadow be a kid and stop making excuses to be creepy about him.
