The four things I notice and hate the most in Gai's (bad) characterization:
Intelligence: In some fics they make him completely stupid, with no ability to conform to social labels or understand what they say to him without rethinking it, and that makes my blood boil because this guy is anything but stupid; He is an avid learner and always seeks improvement (genin at 7, chuunin at 11. He may not be Kakashi but he is still quite a lot, right?), able to predict, if I remember correctly, up to a hundred movements of his enemy before to be executed, someone who thinks quickly in battle and very adaptable.
My God, he drives NUNCHAKUS and you think he's incapable of concentrating? I understand that it is one thing to sit down and study and another to train, but I don't think GAI, of all people, wouldn't take on such a challenge. Appearing empty-minded is his facade, his mask. The only way I can accept that he's pretty stupid is if it's because of the trauma of losing his father, he clings to the attitude of a child as a way to feel like he's back in his childhood. AND YET-
Okay, next point.
Darkness: This man was literally beaten by chuunin because when he was a child just for being the son of a outcast of Konoha, they made fun of him and probably isolated him from the rest as a child, and he has also been under a strict exercise regimen since he was 5 years old. An exercise that made him fall from fatigue and pain, and he, despite everything, continued to get up, continued to force himself to overcome the pain. Gai's darkness is not easily detected because he is not visibly cruel to anyone but himself; The only way he is easily seen is with his relationship with Lee, his dedication to put him through everything he put Lee through even though he is the person Gai loves the most (possibly after his father). The way he pushed his (Lee's) limits to the point of telling Lee that he should face death to hold onto some hope for a better future (to be a shinobi again) is very dark. The relationship he has with Rock Lee ironically brings out the worst parts of Gai, and there we enter the next point.
Cruelty: Gai is a character who has been shown to have an extremely strong code of values, in which benevolence always comes first; He is empathetic in a world where that is condemning, he is kind to people who at best only make fun of him for how he looks. In short, a great person. But that does not mean that he is not cruel, that he hesitates when killing; he is still a soldier, a child soldier who participated in a war based more on ego than anything else. His moral code does not prevent him from killing, but rather makes him limit himself, to limit himself to what is absolutely necessary. If he has defeated his opponents and thus achieved his mission, then he will not kill, because the rest are shinobi like him and also had a mission.
We've only seen traces of Gai's cruelty throughout Naruto, small flashes of what he truly is in battle. Do you seriously think that the title of Beast is achieved only by defeating enemies? It is not even a specific animal, but literally: Konoha's Beast of Prey.
And what is a beast but an animal that kills cruelly? One kick of his was capable of breaking rocks when he was just a child. What prevents him from punching through his opponent's chest? Breaking skulls using just his fingers? You're not going to tell me that someone like him, with his strength, is not capable of ripping off your arm in a single movement.
Gai is capable of great, great cruelty cultivated by years of being humiliated by the village he now protects with his life, by the Village for which he destroys his body day by day. Still, his morals prevail, but it does not mean that cruelty is inappropriate for him.
And possibly the root of all his problems...
Death Wish: Dying for the Village is something that is as ingrained in how Gai thinks as any Konoha child, but this takes a drastic turn when his father sacrifices himself to save him. His father was, despite being ashamed of him, his World. The only person who loved him with everything, who showed him sweetness and tenderness in everything, he who took care of him as the most precious thing he had. In a place where everyone hated him and slowly began to change because Gai was useful to them, only his father loved him unconditionally, no matter what.
It is not specified how old Gai was when his father dies, but he can be placed after 11 and before 14, and that is possibly the source of what he is like; totally adhered to what his father was in an attempt to demonstrate that Maito Dai was a great man and shinobi through his legacy of the Eight Gates, his greatest and only technique. It is known that before he was 20 he had already acquired his title of the Blue Beast of Konoha, so it is accurate to say that he already knew how to open the Seventh Gate, at LESS THAN TWENTY YEARS OLD, the time it took his father to master the technique.
Gai's desire for death and his perspective of it is shown by his speech about Lee's highly risky surgery; If he can't live fully as a ninja, then he doesn't want to live. For him, Death is a price, the most precious coin that he is able to throw to prove something, to prove that he is worth something in a world where Death is common, where he was expected not to survive, much less prosper.
He lives life to the fullest, being his best person, enduring whatever it takes because he knows that his end, his death, when it happens, will show everyone that he was never weak, that he was incredibly powerful, and for someone who grew up being treated as the lowest scum except by his father, who ended up dying in a blaze of glory as an outcast, a death like that is the highest he can aspire to. For him, the only destiny is death, and the only way to prove his worth. And that's not fucked?
(And if you want to add another tragedy, possibly the Eighth Gate was a relief during the war because Gai's death cannot go unnoticed, hidden. Being someone who had so many limitations, being at a significant disadvantage, and being sent to war so young, where the majority are children or other young people who die anonymously, the Eight Gates were his way of establishing that no, he would not be killed, because he would kill himself first. Oh, now i know why he respected Kisame so much at the end.)

I always thought that after Obito's death, Kks starts to let himself show more affection for his friends, but he shuts down again after MinaKushi's death. And he completely ignores Gai again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So he's back to ignoring me again.
It’s really sad to see Gai try so hard only to have Kakashi always brushing him off. Of course Kakashi has his own huge problems to deal with but the fact that Gai continues to stay by his side even if he’s ignored is admirable. He’s been a big factor in drawing Kakashi out of his shell and helped them develop into the friendship they have now. Though Gai refers to their relationship as rivals they are more eternal friends than eternal rivals. No matter how shitty it’s going for Kakashi, Gai will always be there to help him, whether his friend realizes it or not.

Thinking about Gai as a nihilistic character
I know I've written about this at some point in the past, but the concept of apotheosis is genuinely moving to me- that most of life is meaningless suffering, but if you scrape and claw and fight your way to the top for one shining moment of pure self-actualization, it justifies and redeems everything that came before as a necessary sacrifice- and because Time Is A Flat Circle etc it also justifies everything that comes after it to.
And like in fiction, we love to end things at that point, or jussssst after, for maximum satisfaction- the character has Struggled and now they've Succeeded- but there's so much pathos in the afterwards.
And like Gai, almost more than any other character in Naruto embodies the tragedy of living past your goal (although tbf there is a little of this theme in a lot of Naruto). One of the first things we learn about him is that he's got a suicide technique buried in his heart and he's been waiting all his life for the right moment to unleash it- and that's reinforced over and over, one of the few things about Gai we're meant to take totally seriously.
And I kind of love that he got his moment- he opens all eight gates, is recognized as the strongest- but doesn't really succeed, permanently and profoundly disables himself in the prime of his life, and then has to live with the consequence. I'm obsessed with the angst potential of him finding out how to live without a Reason to, and the little bits we get of this in canon (and in glorious fanon) are so good for my brain....

Tenten HeadCannons
NejiTen headcannons: Part One
Here are my individual character headcannons that I mostly use for my fanfictions. I am going to start with Tenten since it took me a long ass time to come up with a back story for her that made sense (years, like years.)
Tumblr media
Let's start with the family name:
Tenten's family name is Hua. Kishimoto had originally wanted Team Gai/Guy to be foreigners and even designed them with Chinese influence. I wanted Tenten's name to have some significance to her character traits as well as her abilities. At first, I thought about Chun-Li (yes, from Street Fighter) However, even with their closeness in design, the only connection I could make was their taijutsu abilities (which even then, Tenten really only showcases her summoning and weapons handling anyway). Then, I thought about the Ballad's of Mulan, the great Chinese woman warrior. She fits with Tenten's ideals and-yous are gonna hate me for this one- in the butchered Disney version, Mulan's traits parallel to Tenten's closely (in my opinion), I settled for having her line trace back to Mulan. I chose this name for her with the idea that Tenten was related somewhere down the line to the great war hero Mulan. There are two translations of Mulan's last name; Fa (Canto) and Hua (mandarin); I chose the Mandarin translation due to the connection to Neji's last name that starts with an 'H' as well. (Corny, I know. Let me be corny please.) So, when looking at it; Hua Tenten... Hua Tian-Tian. I liked it a lot. Tenten's last name actually comes from her mother's side of the family. I didn't Develop Feiten that much, and if felt weird leaving him without a last name.
Tenten comes from shinobi parents. I have already sketched out my designs for Tenten's parents and older brother hereeee . This would make sense to me because Lady Tsunade is her idol, and in my mind, her mother probably told her stories of Tsunade when she was young to motivate her in the ninja academy. Her father is Feiten Hua who is a jonnin and specializes in taijutsu and fire style ninjutsu, he is also proficient in weapons. Xiao-Lin Hua is also a jonnin. Shinten Hua is Tenten's older brother who is three years older than her. He shows proficiency in fire style ninjutsu as well, and hold similar abilities to Tenten in terms of weapons handling. Shinten (sometimes referred to as just 'Shin' by Tenten and her parents) prefers fight with swords and has impressive taijutsu abilities. However, after the shinobi war, Tenten surpasses her peers and her brother in terms of her taijutsu abilities; she is only comparable to her teammates (as stated by Kishimoto).
Tenten's mother is from Takumi Village in the Land of Rivers. In order to keep Kishimoto's original idea of Team Gai being foreigners, I figured making Tenten's mother from the Land of Rivers made the most sense. Xiao-Lin (or just 'Lin' to other Jonnin such as Maito Gai, Kakashi, Asuma, and Kurenai as well as family members). Xiao-Lin had met Feiten through missions he would be sent on to Takumi Village and soon they would work in collaboration. They fell in love and Xiao-Lin relocated to Konoha with Feiten, where they had Shinten and Tenten.
The Hua family is a family of crafters and blacksmiths. Takumi Village is an artisanal village home to merchants, traders, crafters and artists. The Hua family focuses on weapons development and custom weapons; one of their clients being the Hyuga clan. Feiten has worked closely with Hiashi and Hizashi Hyuga for business, and when Tenten was born, Feiten would bring Tenten and Shinten to the Hyuga compound for business meeting.
Break down for the Hua family. 1. Xiao-Lin Hua is the youngest of three. Her two older sisters are Chao-Xing and Kai-Ming Hua. Chao-Xing (or just 'Chao' to her family) is the current head of the Hua family and the family business. Chao-Xing is not a shinobi and has one son. Chao-Xing is the last of her siblings to produce a child, and is considered to be jealous of Xiao-Lin due to her agency. Kai-Ming (or just 'Kai' to family) is a shinobi and the middle sibling. Kai-Ming specializes in water style ninjutsu and assists her older sister in managing the family business. She also has two children of her own. All three siblings share similar looks and mannerisms that can be seen through Tenten. 2. Tenten and Shinten are the oldest of the cousins/grandchildren. Even though Xiao-Lin is did not inherit the family business, she was the first to produce children for her parents. This caused great joy for the family, thus leaving Tenten and/or Shin the option to take over the family business once Chao-Xing steps down. The birth order goes; Shinten and Tenten three years later from Xiao-Lin | Nayao (female) and Isamu (male) from Kai-Ming | and Haitao (male) from Chao-Xing. If we were to timeline this; in my fanficiton Frequency ( ffdotnet | A03 ), Tenten is about 20-21yrs old post war, which makes Shinten (even though he is not written in this fic lol) would be 24-25yrs old, Nayao is 17yrs old and Isamu is 16 yrs old, Haitao is 15yrs old. 3. Tenten is technically and heiress due to the birth order of her brother, herself, and her cousins. This means she is entitled to the honorific '-sama' or simply 'Lady Hua'. When Feiten and Xiao-Lin relocated to Konoha (here Feiten is from) they did not use their titles, at the time unsure if they would even inherit the family business due to Xiao-Lin being the youngest of the siblings. Even when Shinten and Tenten were born first, they kept that information to themselves, wanted their kids to grow up 'normally' without the weight of the family dragging them down. Eventually, around the age four, Tenten would be exposed to the family business transactions with her bother and father would be addressed as 'Lady' by Hiashi Hyuga. By request of Feiten, though, Hiashi would drop the title for privacy reasons. Tenten did not mention this to her teammates; in fact, only Maito Gai knew of Tenten's title and still respected her family's choice in dropping it. In Frequency, Tenten doesn't explain herself until an issue arises regarding her family's business. 4. Feiten Hua can come off as intimidating, however is a whole girl dad. There are only two people in the whole wide world that this man will move heaven and earth for and that is his wife Xiao-Lin and Tenten. Tenten is his pride and joy, her headstrong attitude keeps him on his toes and he will usually always cave to her needs without hesitation. When Feiten met her teammates, he was rather blunt and even questioned Gai's ability to handle the kids after watching them interact. Much to his delighted surprise, he was not expecting Tenten to be on the same team as Neji Hyuga. Delight, in terms of he knew the Hyuga clan keeps track of all their members, which means his daughter would be looked after as well to some extent. 5. Tenten get's her attitude from her mother. Seeing how Tenten shows traits of being hot headed and headstrong, Xiao-Lin is usually sweet and gives off very caring vibes, but don't piss her off because she will not hesitate to snap and yes; she will say it with her whole chest. That bad bitch persona is what we love about Tenten, so she has to get it from somewhere.
Here the original sketch I did of the Konoha Hua family;
Tumblr media
I changed Xiao-Lin’s appearance so it was evident she was related to Tenten in someway...the buns; she needed buns. I switched her hair with Auntie Kai's.

Hmmmmm…that was not good. Kakashi was standing in front of his open fridge pretty much staring into emptiness making a face. Damned… he really should have gone grocery shopping before his mission. For a short moment he entertained the idea of not eating and just go to sleep but dropped the thought pretty much immediately. He had lived on ration bars for the last couple of days. He needed a proper meal but then he also needed rest. He also very much was not in the mood for company.
“Well…I‘m a ninja ne? Should be able to evade people right?“ he muttered to himself and then sighed.
He closed the fridge door, put the mask and Hitai Ate back on. His hair was still wet from the shower and hang sadly over his eyes. He pushed it back and slipped into his shoes.
Kakashi had almost made it to the closest grocery store. Then his journey came to a sudden stop when he noticed Team 8 blocking the entrance to the grocery store. With the wind coming from north/ east neither Kiba nor Akamaru should be able to get a scent. So that was good. He hid behind the corner watching Team 8 and waited for them to leave.
“Why are we observing Team 8? Are they not Team 8 but infiltrators?” he heard Maito Gai’s voice close to his ear. It gave him such a start he pretty much jumped.
“Don’t do that! Who sneaks up on a Shinobi!?” Kakashi complained.
For a moment Gai just stared at him with concentrated frown on his face.
“We do that all the time actually” Gai replied.
“ENEMY SHINOBI GAI ENEMY SHINOBI.”
“Hmmmmm…” Gai said and leaned in far too close for comfort.
“I have never managed to sneak up on Kakashi though…Kakashi is also on a mission…the hair is completely wrong as well…it’s more…fluffy…who are you and how did you get into the village?” Gai said getting into a fighting stance.
“Through the gate Gai…through the gate…I’m back early…also my hair not fluffy…” he replied.
“It sure is not right now…” Kurenai said, approaching with her Team in tow because of course they had noticed them now.
“You cannot use that much conditioner Kakashi…it makes the hair heavy” she added with a smile.
“That’s not Kakashi…I snuck up on him…he was also behaving very strange…watching the entrance of the grocery store” Gai said suspiciously.
“Sure it’s Kakashi…I sense no Genjutsu … Kiba…Akamaru?” She said, looking expectantly at the two of them. The young Inuzuka stepped closer and sniffed at him.
“I’m well aware of the fact that you do not need to do that standing this close to me” the copy nin complained glancing at Kiba.
“Have to be sure Kakashi sensei” Kiba replied with a smirk, giving a slight shrug.
“See” Kurenai said, looking at Gai.
“So…what are you doing Kakashi?” She continued.
“Buying food?”
“You will have to go in the store for that though…not lurk in front of it…did you try to avoid a conversation here?” She asked amused.
“I just want food and sleep” he sighed because he just did not have it in him anymore to discuss.
“That I do believe…Team 8 get Kakashi sensei something to eat…Gai bring him home. He might run into a wall as tired as he looks…”
“Yo” Gai said and then turned to Kakashi.
“I will better carry you” he added dead serious.
“Absolutely not” he said and started walking.
“But you might faint again” Gai said but did follow him fortunately without making an attempt to carry him.
“I won’t faint…I do not faint all the time…where does this rumour come from anyway?” Somehow people had this notion of him being prone fainting.
“Not all the time but…you know…it does happen…I had to carry you from Suna.”
“I was walking fine back then…you just could not handle to go at a low speed” Kakashi replied and the bickering went on till they reached his apartment. Maybe running into people was not such a bad thing after all.

The cutest image my mind keeps conjuring up is young Maito Gai in a bunny costume, riding Ningame and holding out a bag going "Trick or Treat!"
It won't stop plaguing my mind!!!

What’s one of your favorite tropes that you haven’t written for (or haven’t written for in a while)? If you want, write a little snippet about how you’d do it now.
Hi @full-frontal-lotus! Hi, friendddddd! 😁
Ooooooh! That's a good one! Not so much a trope but I have been thinking recently about trying to branch out and try a slightly darker-toned series because I've recently been on a Fallout binge.
I mean, I write Naruto stuff. If I got a bit better at writing things like violence (fight scenes specifically) or slow-creeping dread, I could do a lot more mission-type stories, which would be cool to explore!
Once I get through my current story request queue (I'm so close! Kinda🫠), I plan on releasing the next two bingo cards. The segment below will be the prologue to a FalloutAU one.
A not-completed, only-mildly-edited snippet is below!
Thank you for such a cool and sweet ask! 🎆
Ao3 ✨ |Story Request Bingo Cards 📖 | WIP Game Always Open ✒️| Ko-Fi ☕| Reblog Blog 🟢
Fallout AU Series: Chapter 1 - Prologue: War Never Changes
Warnings: Fallout Alternative Universe. Bombs. War. Minor Character Death.
Iruka wrote the number of current dead on the board, far higher than the two others combined. He forced his grip to tighten around the chalk in his hand to finish writing the last of too many digits.
“So,” he forced a pause to collect himself, feeling everyone's gaze in his direction but focused solely on the writing on the board, “the number of years each war is decreasing, but the death count is rising. What does that tell you?”
No one gave him a reply, not that he genuinely expected one. The room is so quiet the slight thud of him replacing his stick of chalk, sounding like one of the bombs they all feared, erupting decimation through their street, had already started to rain down.
Shikaku gave Iruka a subtle nod when he discreetly met the man's eyes. He agreed with how he made his point.
“Iruka Sensei.”
It took him a head shake and a few rapid blinks to realise that Sakura had spoken up. She was such a well-behaved student. Never cursing, handing in her homework on time and constantly raising her hand when she asked a question, but Iruka could see both her hands were occupied, one in both of her fathers and the other being grabbed onto by her mother so tightly all six of their hands looked ghost white. Hanging on to each other like a lifeline
“Yes, Sakura?”
“You never answered Ino before. Do you think the bombs will drop? Do you-do you think the world will-?”
Her sentence abruptly stopped when she what looked like painfully bit into her lip and bowed her head, both her dotting parents wrapping her in a hug; Mrs Haruno’s soft motherly reassurances floated on the otherwise silent air of it being okay, of everything being fine, that there was no need to cry. All lies.
Several of his more skittish and empathetic students looked at him with that same pleading in their eyes that Sakura had in her voice before it shattered.
In his classroom with him at that moment were some of the village's most amazing individuals, as well as some of the most broken children.
Gai Maito adopted two children with whom he had no possible connection and raised them to be healthy and loved when they were both too young to remember their parents, who would never return from the front lines. Tenten and Lee gripped one of his hands.
Shikamaru looked at his army battle hardened father with a wisdom beyond his years. Iruka, knowing that while he didn’t study for his Math or English tests, he skipped class to read thick tombs of battle strategies and inner army working, knowing his lineage was a path laid out for him and an important one he planned on continuing willingly.
All around the room, parents and children shared heartbroken, frightened looks. The three siblings from the Sand exchanged worried looks that the war would never end, that they would never be able to return home.
The prominent shining glaze of Fu’s eyes and shaking of her shoulders as she hugged herself and silence from the three from Kumogakure scared that the new home they had found would follow the ones they had already lost under a wave of never-relenting gunshots and explosions that created mountains of bodies of their former family, friends and fellow.
If the Land of Fire were flattened in bomb fire, there would be nowhere to start home number three and no one to start it with.
Iruka was a humble history teacher. He wasn’t a warrior or a great intellectual, and on some days, he didn’t even have the everlasting optimism that Gai Maito had. At that moment, he only had the ability to be honest with the children, nearly young adults, in front of him.
“I can’t see the future, Sakura,” he admitted, his voice barely holding together, only making the girl's green eyes cloud with more tears, “I can only tell you what history tells me. And it tells me war is violent-”
He turned back to the board, snatched the chalk back up, leaning into the spike of anger the conversation created to push on, and underlined the death toll for the First World War.
“devastating-”
He underlined the death toll for the Second World War.
“And-”
Finally, he underlined the death count for the Sound War before turning around.
“Continuous.”

Kakashi's ACES and Resiliency
In working with my kiddos with trauma, one of the first things we do is go over Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES). A little techno jargon, but basically, it's a list of 10 childhood experiences that can lead to negative or adverse adult outcomes Basically, if you have 4 or more, you're more likely to have negative adult outcomes.
And well, in doing Kakashi's ACES, guess what? Remember all that trauma from the previous post? Even with all that trauma, he only scored a 2!! And I think (and so do a lot of my kiddos) that explains his resiliency and why he didn't "turn evil," which I will also explore - as the bad guys aren't always so bad, but that's another post.
Anyway, for those who are curious, Kakashi only scored points for: 1) living with a parent who is mentally ill and 2) parents being separated/divorced or being raised in a single-parent household.
Hot take, but so many fans often reference this guy:
Tumblr media
Might Gai/Maito Gai, Kakashi's best friend as the reason he didn't "go bad."
But you know what, in looking at his childhood, again, it's a hot take (maybe) but I think it was:
This guy!
Tumblr media
Dad!
I know, I did say hot take, right? But hear me out.
If this:
Tumblr media
never happened (look at those smiles!), you wouldn't have
this:
Tumblr media
And that's what ACES are about. Even though Sakumo, his dad, did die when Kakashi was really young, if Kakashi didn't have early nurturing and bonding in those formative early years (yes things did get rocky for a little while in Anbu, but that's another post) then this:
Tumblr media
Kakashi + Akatsuki (a-kaht-skee - rogue group/gang) would have been more likely to happen.
*As always, post is for entertainment-educational purposes only. Please do not ask me for mental health advice. I am more than happy to discuss anime mental health, but if you need help on "real life" mental health issues, please contact a local mental health provider.
*For anyone who is interested, ACES isn't a restricted assessment. It is available to the general public. You can search for it on google. It's a trauma screening tool used to promote awareness about the impact of childhood trauma on adulthood.
