Dear invisible illness, Today you wrapped your hands around my throat And my lungs felt so heavy. It felt like I was gasping for air, but no one could see that I wasn’t breathing easy. Today you put on your metal gloves and repeatedly punched me in the stomach. I will not wake up with bruises, and no one will ever know that it felt as though my insides were one shaky breath from spilling out. Today you found my heart, and you squeezed. It felt like a balloon was about to pop in my chest, but no one knew. No one ever knows. When there are no marks to show for the abuse I suffer at your hands each day, there is no proof that you are here. When I can’t get out of bed tomorrow, I will be called lazy, dramatic, or a fake. I will hear things like - you don’t look sick. You don’t know what sickness feels like. You have never been this sick or that sick. You don’t let people see you. So it looks like I’m seeking attention or grasping for excuses as to why I can’t participate in life some days. The doctors say I’m fine, my numbers are just slightly elevated but nothing to be concerned about. My blood tests come back normal. And they seem just as lost as I am. “If you really are sick, just try these antibiotics “ “If you really felt that way, I don’t think you’d be here” “If you are always sick, why don’t you look sick, act sick, sound sick?” This invisible illness, or illnesses - they keep me in this box. And of course, I want out, but I want to know what kind of box this is. I want to see the face of the illness that puts me down for the count too many times to be counted. Dear invisible Illness, You may be able to make me feel things I cannot explain, but you cannot take away my will to live in spite of you. There are many reasons why someone may need to use a wheelchair even if they aren't paralyzed! . For example, being unable to walk long distances or at all because of muscle weakness, joint and muscle pain, being unable to stand for long because of fainting, being unable to walk long distances because of extreme breathlessness . Soooo much T H I S !!! I'm struggling right now with neuropathy, aching in my right eye from getting a needle in it yesterday for retinopathic hemmoraging. I saw this and I had to repost from @colourblind_zebra 🤩 It's nice to have a fancy-schmancy feed, but to me, it's more authentic to tell a story with my platforms & that's what I'm going to start doing from now on: telling my story and sharing others' journeys with disabilities as well. This is what it means to be a Spoonie, even a faith-filled one. XO ~Chel 😘 👇💯👇💯👇 Not every disabled person is in a wheelchair 🤷 . . That person next to you who you think "looks healthy" could actually be disabled! Invisible disabilites are so common, they just seem rare because, well, you can't see them! . . For those of us with invisible disabilites, navigating the world can be very hard. This is often because of the misconception that you have to LOOK disabled to actually BE disabled when this isn't actually the case . . We often receive nasty looks and comments when using a disabled parking space or toilet and asking for concessions because we're disabled brings along comments too... "But you look fine to me!" . . Your eyes aren't "disabled people scanners" that can automatically sense out disabled people and those who are "faking"... So don't act like they are. Sometimes I feel so so sick and in so so much pain that it feels like that is all I am is pain and exhaustion and I’m nothing else. Like a scribble, and no one believes me and no one cares enough to help me really do something about it and I’m just alone in so much pain. That’s all I am is just pain.
