I fell asleep at 8pm last night and didn’t wake up once. I haven’t slept that good in months holy hell.

Recovering from a surprise migraine, today is technically day 3 but all I have left is photosensitivity so it's not much of a problem. Yesterday was "no light no screens try and sleep it off" so I'll take a little light sensitivity lmao.

Looking for information about menstrual headaches--this paper uses very gendered language, but the information is useful.

If I'm reading this right, the prevailing theory about menstrual headaches is that they're due to a sudden decrease in estrogen during that phase of the menstrual cycle, which causes problems because of a combination of withdrawal symptoms and because estrogen may be involved in natural pain reduction ("At a central level, estrogens can activate the endogenous opioid system that controls pain sensations")

Furthermore, this paper indicates that I may be heading for a few years of extra horrible menstrual headaches (like I had yesterday) as I amble my way into perimenopause, because estrogen levels are all over the place as the body starts shutting that stuff down. Yay.

(I am uninsured and so manage the pain with diphenhydramine--generic Benedryl--originally because I thought they were sinus headaches, and you know the joke about Benedryl working because your sinuses can't hurt when your whole head is numb...that applies with this, for me, too)

#also this paper notes that 'men' are much less likely to suffer migraines than 'women' (again the gendered language)#which shines a new light on the old 'jokes' about women using headache as a seemingly shallow reason for no sex #because if cis men are just not as prone to debilitating headaches to begin with??? then they genuinely have never known how much it hurts #and maybe can't even imagine how a headache could be worse than anything they've felt #listen: i stopped feeling a need for painkillers the day after having a caesarian. i have a high tolerance for pain. yesterday HURT.

does anyone have any ideas for treating headaches if you're not supposed to be taking NSAIDs? please note that tylenol and acetaminophen DO NOT work for me. i know tumblr isn't a doctor but i'm crowdsourcing here

#i'm not supposed to take nsaids because of ~gi bleeding~ but i do it anyway because it's the only thing that actually works on me #my doctor isn't. happy about this #anyway.#i'm not supposed to take any nsaids right now because i have a procedure on tuesday and i'm supposed to quit 5 days in advance #should be easy right? it's not like i take them like candy! it's just a few doses a month!#nah of course yesterday i get a headache. starts mild. i try to just ride it out & drink fluids & take a nap & asked my aunt for tylenol #doesn't go away. becomes a splitting headache in the middle of the night & i cannot sleep. eventually i break down at 3 am & take ibuprofen #finally fall asleep pain-free at 4 am #and i just??? i hope this isn't an issue since the procedure is still 4 days out? i will try to avoid taking it again??#but like What Am I Supposed To Do
