Hermit Permits- or Hermitconomics101

I would just like to start off by saying I adore the concept. It's perfect. But also, I'm a massive nerd and I wanna talk about it.This is such a fascinating little economic model. Like, the usual hermitcraft economy is already so fascinating.

Warning-Long post! Also might Slightly skew your perspective of the Gimmick.

At first Glance, the Hermitcraft economy is the epitome of a Perfect Market economy -the basic selling/buying market you think of when thinking of markets-which has a few requirements

1. Homogenous products: gunpowder from Doc's shop is the same gunpowder from Tango's or Iskall or whoever sells it

2. No barriers to entry and exit: anyone can decide to sell. The technology's there. Any hermit can decide to make a farm or manually harvest something, set up shop and sell

3. Sellers are Price takers: If say, X and False are both selling copper ingots (for example), and X prices his higher than False (and they both keep their shops stocked), Hermits will buy from False. So X has to price the same (or lower but shhhh) than False.

4. Product Transparency: If you pay 1 diamond for a stack of iron blocks, you know you're getting 1 stack of iron. (usually) no shenanigans involved

And now the interesting point->

5. Many sellers- In a perfect competition market, the market is usually saturated with sellers, to the point that everyone needs to price the same, or at exactly the cost of production (or whatever needs to be to have the last seller joining the market to have economic profit of 0 but that's real hard to count in diamonds). Usually, this is done by having many firms coming in (free market remember) and undercutting each other until it's at the point where Supply is equal to Demand (yes, exactly the graph you're thinking of). In hermits' case, rarely is there more than one shop for an item unless there is an obnoxious amount of demand for it, and often, they'll buddy up in the same shop and split the profits and the work (I'm thinking of all the wood groups) for the highly in demand items. (More on that later).

So the sellers aren't usually competing with other hermits to sell resources- they're competing with the hermits' other way of procuring resources- The Endless Grind

Think about it- The rule of thumb for establishing the scope of a market (and its competition) is to ask yourself- where do I go if the shop becomes too expensive? In our real-life situation, we go to other shops- hermits just roll up their pixilated sleeves and get to work themselves. They are the alternative. (or Lag but stealing throws off all economic models so we're assuming it doesn't exist.)

A hermit shop, to have sales, needs to price its resources low enough that other hermits will see it as a better (cheaper) alternative than acquiring it themselves.

But Nemo, I hear you ask, isn't it always going to be cheaper to collect the material themselves? All the hermits already have all the tools/technology they'd need to get the resources they'd want, so shops wouldn't work.

But they do work, every season hermits "get rich" which implies there's something "wrong" with my model, which there is.

It's Time. That's the main currency in Hermitcraft.

Any hermits can decide to get any amount of resources with no real limit except Time. Sure, some hermits are more likely to build farms and have it done quicker than others, but all of them can decide to pick up a tool and just grind away (which they do, often). The point of the shops is to be convenient. You could spend 3 hours getting 15 stacks of oak wood, but you could also drop 30 diamonds at Ren's shop and get that done in less than a minute. Which, when you're a content creator on a tight deadline, already spending hours upon hours just building and editing and living outside of work, time is precious. So Time is the real trading currency on HC.

And so there comes a wrench in the plan as you have 2 "types" of goods- you have the Sellers' resources (that cost you diamonds but less time) and your own resources (which cost you Time but fewer diamonds)

Which invalidates point 3. Price Takers- There are 2 very different prices, which you are willing to pay at different times to different degrees. Somedays, they grind somedays they pay.

And thus, there goes the perfect competition model-

~~And in comes Monopolistic competition.

Now, listen to me, this is crucial ish- this is not the same as a Monopoly.

Monopolies imply there is 1 seller. 1. there is 1 way of acquiring the good (at this point in time) (everything is taken as if time is held constant). YouTube has a monopoly on hermitcraft videos (kind of). You can't watch Hermitcraft videos anywhere else, as the hermits don't upload their videos on other websites. If YouTube started charging 10000$ per video watched, you probably wouldn't watch hermit videos anymore. That's a monopoly.

Monopolistic competition is when a few firms sell slightly different products. Think Pepsi and Coca-Cola. They're functionally the same thing (don't @/me for this), but they both still work as companies, because people tend to prefer one over the other.

And thus our model. A monopolistic competitive market.

The real competition was not store vs store (unless for the bit), it was Sellers vs the Grind.

(There are also sunk cost fallacies exhibited, when hermits make their own farms for materials they know they'll need a lot of, which then reduces the time spent, especially with AFK'ing, thus the active time spent being reduced but server time still fluctuating but that can be hermitconomics 102 lmao)

But Back to this season-

With the introduction of Hermit Permits (which, is such a fun term, I wouldn't be surprised if they came up with that first before the concept) they are forcing there to be a single official seller. But hermits are still able to collect their own resources and make their own farms. So the market stays the same.

Which is probably not what you were expecting was it. All this fanfare but theoretically, the model doesn't change. It might change the point at which a hermits decides it's better to grind it out instead of spending diamonds, but not the theory.

But here's the second hole in this theory.

One of the first assumptions one makes about any market model is that everyone involved wants to maximize profits. (which irl, is making the most money).

But the same was as the real currency is Time, the real Profit for Hermits is Content (and engagement, and a whole bunch of parasocial scales to do with audience retention but I'm an economic major, not a sociology or business student damn it, we'll stick with Content) .

Theoretically, nothing changes in the economic model, but the result changes. The potential to change things up is massive, simply because they at least superficially changed something. Rebranding something, in a way that shakes up previously established norms- That's what they're getting out of it. Forcing people to do content about things they normally wouldn't even touch, which inspires viewers to be invested, so see our favourite blorbos overcome the challenge. It's a narrative device.

(If anything, I'd expect this to actually "promote the economy" as hermits would be motivated to stock up their shops, thus making more farms/farm building episodes, or the competition occurring from additional permits being circulated.)

So yeah. Hermitconomics 101- The not-so-perfect competition. Sorry If I burst some bubbles, I just think it's fascinating.

This is my one and probably only longform essay about hermitcraft, I hope you enjoy

Part 1: my introduction to Minecraft

I first found Minecraft from a friend who had pocket edition on his phone at recess, he let me play for a few minutes, and those first few minutes fueled an obsession. I was raised on LEGO and Lincoln logs, of course I was going to love it. I spent the next few months convincing my parents to buy me the pocket edition on my tablet. After a long time, they forked over the 6.99 and I was off. My creativity spread over several weeks building Star Wars ships on a flat world. After a few more weeks of convincing my sister joined me on my first survival world. I spent a long time digging holes. Then I began to wonder, did anyone else play Minecraft?

Part 2: the early days

In YouTube, I began to be my constant search for Minecraft builds and content. In my first months, i bounced around between various creators, many of whom’s videos I found interesting yet not the creators themselves. I did eventually settle with a Minecraft creator by the name of Unspeakablegaming, who’s videos at the time I found very intriguing.

After following several of his series over the course of several months, I began to realize I was slowly leaving the demographic of his videos and consequently his energy and the nature of the majority of his videos began to irritate me until I completely stopped watching them.

This was around 2016, when I began looking for something I could be invested in. It was then when I encountered a YouTuber by the name of Mumbo Jumbo. While I, was by no means a redstoner, and would realistically be even less inclined to follow his tutorials as I played in pocket edition, his videos nonetheless were endlessly entertaining for me.

I endlessly waited for each new redstone tutorial while being somewhat disappointed when I would instead see an episode of Hermitcraft. Remembering the SMPs that Unspeakablegaming had participated, in the past, I finally worked up the courage to watch one.

I still remember the very first one, it was in the first third of season 5, Mumbo was working his way through his villager farm, and I couldn’t believe it, it was still Mumbo, *faffing about* doing his thing. And I watched his videos, until the end busting with Iskall. Until that moment he hadn’t even interacted with anyone else on the server, and it was a magical moment, they interacted naturally, it wasn’t scripted it was just friends hanging out and playing Minecraft.

Part 3: Hermitcraft season 6-7

I ended season 5 of hermitcraft and began excitedly awaiting season 6. It was at this point I began to look back at other hermitcraft members, including scar and iskall, and so when Hermitcraft season 6 started, I was watching well over half the whitelist (take that hermitcraft recap!). as the season progressed i settled into a few hermitcraft members i enjoyed watching, and continued on through civil war, area 77 and Demise.

it was then that my world changed, yes the world changed. 28 of February 2020

As the new semester of school began, and the new season of hermitcraft began, my enthusiasm for school hit an all time low, and then as we all know the news of cruise ships being docked and the words pandemic and disease became more than words in textbooks about the black plague or the Spanish flu. As darkness and chaos raged throughout the world, Season 7 started. I watched and listened to nearly every stream, watched every episode and clung to that joy that I experienced watching it.

The insistent optimism from all the hermits that propelled season 7 into being a refuge from the storm. Much of the success of hermitcrafts rise to popularity came from these days and months, as homebound cities and nations, and myself included looked a bit lost, but found happiness and hope in the hermits.

For months I enjoyed, the world slowly turning back to normal, I finished up my last year of high school and I knew I would be going to serve a mission for my church, meaning I probably wouldn’t see the last of season 8

Part 4: Season 8

Season 7 ending brought even more excitement and anticipation for some of my favorite creators who towards the end of the season stopped uploading.

Season 8 began with the voice chat, with the appearance of two new hermits and a whole lot of fun. During these months I began working full time, although the nature of my job allowed me to listen to a large majority of the streams, impulse, Gem, and Iskall became constant as I worked, and they worked alongside me. They were days never to be forgotten.

And then, my day to leave drew closer. The big moon plot reached its climax and end as the world exploded, just as I was about to leave. It had been great, I still cherish memories of listening to them talk during long hours stocking shelves, or in the mornings before work to see what crazy things they had come up with.

I missed all of season 9. I returned home late December 2023, just as it ended. As they said their last goodbyes to season ninfinity.

Now with the start of season 10, and the inclusion of yet another two hermits, hi Skizz, hi Joel, all I can hope for, and much of what I have seen from the community is the same positivity. I have continued enjoying their videos and streams, while I’m working and at home.

Part 5: Conclusion

The world of hermitcraft is beyond the invididual seasons, it is the community. Hermitcraft is all of us. It is all the positivity, all the genuine energy they bring in everything they do.

For those who don’t know them, I invite you to come in and take a seat. And for those who already know, enjoy, and remember. We may wish for the past, but They make the future a little sweeter. What the future hold is not certain, but as long as there is a Welcome back Miners and Crafters, it will be okay

I have two minds to answer this, because part of me is going 'WE GOT EM!!! WE GOT EM!!' While the other part of me is like 'oh god how do I tell them. Who’s going to tell them.' The easiest way I can explain: Tom, Ben, and Harry are not in a minecraft series together, and the lore that I have for them is not based in any actual series. HOWEVER. DON’T LET THE TRAGIC TRUTH MAKE YOU CLICK AWAY /silly so I can explain properly LMAO

Here’s a TLDR for anyone who likes these guys and is a lil interested in them!!

Most of the lore for these three is based on an amalgamation of inside jokes, non-minecraft character trends, and general yogs minecraft world lore!

Tom was an editor (now has a YouTube channel, AngoryTom) and did behind-the-scenes minecraft prep for the Yogscast for so long that he was never really interested in any actual "main channel" series besides [Dig Site - 10 episodes] with Simon, Lewis, and Ben, and [Skyblock - 2 episodes] with Ben! Although he’s also played several npcs throughout various main channel series since he was helping run the show lol. My take on his character is that he’s a former yoglabs employee due to [YOGLABS CLASSIFIED INFORMATION] and now lives his laziest life ever in an undisclosed remote location. He’s also the demigod of death but he’ll never tell

Ben started doing main series mc content a few years ago, but hasn’t done anything mc with Tom and Harry until recently (see below)! His character is a Shark Hybrid due to [YOGLABS CLASSIFIED INFORMATION] who now lives with Tom at the same undisclosed remote location.

Harry has been an insane speedrunning minecraft legend for ages, but was never in any main series content bc he’s actually a graphic designer for the yogs. But he was part of Iskall’s twitch vault hunter event back in November, and he’s now in the [Vault Hunter Series - Ongoing] with Ben and Duncan on YouTube! <3 so there’s plenty of mc content of Harry and Ben, but not so much Tom. c!Harry has lived remote for as long as he can remember, locked in Hardcore, until…?

But again, I base their backstories on a bunch of kinda loosely connected lore dots that are half based on jokes <3

BEN AND TOM

I’ve been in love with Ben and Tom as a duo forever, since the TTT (modded Trouble in Terrorist Town) days, where Ben’s player model was Left Shark, and Tom’s model was Emperor Palpatine (yes from Star Wars. I can’t stand them). But Ben and Tom have been yogs editors and Behind The Scenes guys forever, so it wasn’t until more recently that they became known personalities in the main yogscast circle (4-5 years is pretty recent in the 10+ years of yogs content timeline LMAO).

Through Warhammer streams and behind the scenes stuff, I kinda fell in love with their chemistry and idiocy, and they worked so well with the “main cast” that I just had to put them in the yogs minecraft universe, somewhere. Turns out, Tom had actually done a majority of the "behind the scenes" work for the Yoglabs series (he built a majority of the main building, did mod research and testing, was present during recordings to make sure things went well, stuff like that) so it only made sense to have his character be the Right Hand Man/ Behind The Scenes Assistant to Xephos (Lewis), the Morally Questionable Head of Yoglabs.

For anyone who’s unfamiliar with Yoglabs, it’s one of the yogs’ more famous series featuring Simon (Honeydew) and Lewis (Xephos) where they tested mods! more info can be found here!

c!Tom also ended up as a Lumian (the fanon alien space species for the yogs fandom, vaguely inspired by Star Trek Vulcans) because of a one-off joke where one of the Yogs artists drew him as a star trek commander, and I really didn’t need any further reason to make him a weird little guy LDKFJG

As far as the “demigod of death” thing goes, it felt right to give him a lore thing that vaguely coordinated with the whole “Emporer Palpatine” vibe, since that’s kinda the mc skin he’s used most recently. There’s another reason there that I don’t think I’ve properly explained, so I’ll leave the rest of that be for now ;]

Ben, on the other hand, plays a shark character in pretty much every video game he ever participates in, so shark hybrid was a pretty obvious way to go. And of course, since the duo had to be in the same place… involving Ben’s shark Hybrid-ness with yoglabs experimentation made good sense and good angst. What can I say :]

HARRY

Harry is kinda known as the yogscast’s token memelord? But in the ironic way. He somehow makes it genuinely hilarious idk man. His humor is very dry, witty, and sarcastic, but he’s a sweetheart and kind of a god at minecraft. I’ve been arguing since day one that this man should be in mcc but we won’t go there

There aren't many solo harry compilations, so here's a link to a Harry and Ben compilation hehe

Regarding his minecraft lore, pretty much all of it is based around the idea that he’s a god at speedrunning and hardcore Minecraft. A common consensus in yogscast minecraft lore is that respawning is actually a Yoglabs-based mechanic tied to clones and clone making. I thought it would be interesting if Harry could be tied to a hardcore element in the yogs lore purely by having Somehow slid under yoglabs’ radar. And since he was never in any main channel (aka modded) series, i usually associate him with Vanilla mechanics, and since i also view mods as a Yoglabs-related lore element, it made sense! So basically— no clones, no respawns, no mods!

except that he’s in a main channel series now. So I’ll need to find a new lore reason around that DTBJDFGHK

And his design, well… this man’s skin is straight up Mr Mime, and there’s only so much I can do with that /silly But he’s a HUGE Pokémon fan! He’s played a couple of Disaster Nuzlockes with Lydia from the yogs a year or so ago, if that’s something you’re interested in! Was a huge comfort series for me for the longest time and rly good background noise, theyre soooo good at Pokémon I promise <3

Harry does more twitch stuff (hrry on twitch) than youtube stuff, so twitch is the best place to check him out if you're interested in his solo content!

Last thing I'll say about him is that he designed and ran an original minecraft minigame called "Capture the Wool" and he and Martyn are the hosts for a few episodes i think! i dont think there's any way to explain how entertaining it is to listen to him announce the chaos of yogs members trying to play competitive minecraft LOL

Um, so. TLDR…2, These guys are basically my ocs and now I get Actual minecraft content from them which is crazy. I love them as content creators and cool guys so so much though, so! Definitely recommend listening to these idiots (affectionate) babble and ramble to each other, mc or not <3

About this AU:

This is just a random idea that came to my head, and it all started when Iskall was rejected by Joel. As soon as I caught wind of the love polygon, I just started thinking about a Hermitcraft Rejection Saga, and the first Hermit I thought of, and how they react to rejection, was Iskall as a Yandere.

Now as a character, I’m envisioning them (yes, I’m using they/them for c!Iskall, mainly because cc!Iskall said he doesn’t care what pronouns we give the character) as an obsessive Yandere who chose Jimmy, Joel’s flirty friend, as a rebound just to make Joel jealous, and when that failed, they resorted to murder. Of course, this is all fun and games, and this is a whole saga, not just Iskall, but the other Hermits are up for debate. Everyone is allowed their own opinions, and I can’t control what you do or don’t do with your own headcanons. So feel free to share them as asks or suggestions if you feel comfortable! I’m not forcing you to share if you don’t want to, it’s your choice!

I really love how like. impulse and grian are both very loyal people. and yk. they've both been betrayed in a life game, so if anyone understands wanting to be loyal but also scared of being betrayed again, it's them. I def think that on the first night the southlands were established, the two of them stayed up talking to each other about being afraid of working in a group, considering their wounds from third life. I'm picturing impulse sitting next to grian and grian like. resting his head against his shoulder and just... talking. eventually they move the discussion away from the life games and toward more mundane stuff. and they fall asleep like that.

GOD WHERE DO I START WITH THESE TWO... first of all, their evo history???? grian pranking bigb all the time???? man's had a big crush on bigb back in evo and he showed affection by pranking him. like the pesky bird he is. and in my angst filled ways, I like to think that they agreed to talk things out after they beat the ender dragon and then, yknow, grian kinda... disappeared. and bigb was devasted :< buT THEN THERE'S THE LIFE GAMES.... firstly that ship name makes it so hard to find grian and ren stuff on here omg. ANYWAYS, I love the idea of grian and ren always being on opposite sides of some kind of feud. season 6 prank war, 3rd life, king ren arc (even if uh. ren technically did hire grian, but grian still kind of went against him). but also they work really well together too!!!! it's a fun balance of ren getting waaay too into something and grian being the one to reel him back in, or grian coming up with a plan and ren going "yes and" in return. also big werewolf cuddling liddol bird man... ren is affectionate like a puppy and he loves flustering grian <333 AND GRIAN GIVING REN FASHION ADVICE...

I feel like the thing that draws a LOT of former Fanders to Hermitcraft is the maturity of the Hermits. If something gets delayed, they're straight up about it. There are clear dates. If a Hermit has to leave for their health, mental or otherwise, they say so, and are welcomed back with open arms. The Hermits themselves don't ever call out 'haters", instead focusing on the positives. Even Gem and Pearl, who are YOUNGER THAN THOMAS, act maturely enough to acknowledge if there's a gap in videos, or to say 'I don't want to go into details but I'll be back soon'. That's something Thomss is severely lacking in- maturity and transparency. A simple tweet or insta post can go a long way. Doc doesn't have to say 'sorry the video was late, Doccy got sick', but he does. Ren doesn't have to talk about his mental health, but he does. None of them are perfect, but Thomas still acts like he's that 20 year old from Vine. Maybe he just doesn't know how else to act, or he's in an echo chamber of only seeing the 'good' side of the Fandom. But I know, because I've been watching The Hermits for years now- the kind of shit Thomss has pulled? You'd never see Iskall, or Scar, or Tango doing shit like that. They're honest with their fans. Even Wels, who hasn't uploaded a Hermitcraft video in a while, has 100 times more transparency than Thomas.

Sorry to get on my soap box, but that just hit me while watching Decked Out. TLDR; The Hermits act like adults when they need to be adults. Thomas hasn't left his early 20's

GOD YEAH YOURE SO RIGHT. i went from a tss spinterest to a hermitcraft (+ life series, evo etc) spinterest and .. now you point it out, theyre a million times more transparent

to make a semi-similar comparison: the wait between tss episodes and the wait for decked out to be finished. obviously, making a whole mini game in minecraft and making an episode of a web series arent similar in process, but the way tango and thomas handled the wait can be compared. it took tango 13 months to make decked out 2. he made countless episodes and livestreams talking about the process and giving us updates. thomas, in the three and a half years he's been writing the finale, has only told us he's finished parts one through three. he's 3/4 of the way done with the writing.... but that doesnt tell us if he's filmed or edited anything, if he has all the props together for the shoot... we just have his word that something is coming soon. he'll be done soon

and yes, spoilers for a minigame and spoilers for an episode of a show do affect how much information one can give, but we have gotten nothing from thomas

HermitCraft, a magical and wondrous world in the greater MineCraft server hub. Every day has new adventures, new shenanigans and a strange series of riddles here and there. Quests are abound; are you ready to join the party?

Series Involved: HermitCraft, Evo SMP, Empires SMP & The Life SMP mixed with LoliRock, Miraculous, les Aventures de Ladybug et Chat Noir, Mysticons & Winx Club.

"Hermit Heroes" is a multi-fandom idea that combines the above SMPs together with lore and concepts from the above TV shows to make this absolute monstrosity of an alternative universe. I...really don't have a better explanation outside of "I like these shows and I got too into combining them together" so...enjoy I guess.

Anyway, onto the actual thing. It primarily takes place in the HermitCraft world (a big combo of all seasons worlds into one big thing) with guest appearances by other folks of other SMPs here and there, and sometimes even going to those SMPs. The lore of Empires is heavily intertwined alongside Evo's lore to make this very magical-girl-superhero-action plot of different groups working to achieve a goal. The big thing though is the Watchers, the Listeners and the species that makes them as they place a giant role in the story like some season-long villain.

Now, to the best part, the characters. These are just the mains for now and they're aren't super detailed at the moment as I'm still working out all of the notes and information gathering needed. And a thing to note, I grouped all of the main characters up to keep track of them easier. I find that large casts are OK so long as they're digestible and easy to remember with manageable groups and such.

The groups and the show they're from are as follows: The Yes Wings Club & The No Wings Club (Winx Club), Ephedian Empresses (LoliRock), Hermit Heroes/Miraculous Mob Wranglers (Miraculous Ladybug) and Three Musketeers (Mysticons).

The Yes Wings Club & The No Wings Club

Grian: Grian's apart of 3 different groups: The Yes Wings Club, the No Wings Club and the Hermit Heroes/Miraculous Mob Wranglers. He is the Witch of Chaos, Fairy of the Ardent Sun and the hero Red Rooster a.k.a Poultry Man the hero of Entropy. He's also a Watcher named Xelqua, but that's not important...right? Grian is someone unable to be bound to one thing, always many things at once and watching what madness may occur from his multitude of powers.

Cleo (ZombieCleo) & Etho (EthosLab): The two other members of the No Wings Club (no Iskall, sorry. I know he's the actual founder but he doesn't really work in this version of the group. He has his own thing). Their name, besides being a play on the Yes Wings Club and the actual No Wings Club, also works to describe them because witches don't have wings and don't need them to fly, whereas fairies do.

Cleo is the Witch of Puppetry, able to manipulate both inanimate and animate to people's...delight.

Etho is the Witch of Mystery with darkness, deception, trickery and stealth as his domain.

Impulse (ImpulseSV), Wels (Welsknight), Pearl (PearlescentMoon), Scar (GoodTimesWithScar), Tango (TangoTek) & Jimmy (SolidarityGaming): The many members of the Yes Wings Club with the canon founding members and my own personal additions. These people (and eventually Jimmy) make up the Yes Wings Club, with their sparkly fairy wings (natch, given the name) and sparkly outfits.

Impulse is the Fairy of Lightning, able to harness the power of electricity to shock his foes and fly through the sky; just don't high-five him when he lands.

Wels is the Fairy of Metal, defending his friends with the power of sword, shield and steel beams flying at you.

Pearl is the Fairy of the Gleaming Moon (Pearl, Fairy of the Pearlescent Moon just doesn't sound right sadly, and all other synonyms were too long) and can use the powers of the moon itself such as light, reflection, truesight and moon big; watch out for gravity.

Scar is the Fairy of Nature (or Landscaping, or some other word if I can find one that fits) and with the power of his fairy animal Jellie, he can teraform any enemies back where they belong, or accidentally unleash Scarra again.

Newest fairy on the block is Tango, Fairy of Redstone, flying through battle with pulses, power or he'll just yeet a massive pile of dust in your face, whichever works (he's the team's Tecna basically).

And then there's Jimmy, a later addition down the line who finds himself to be the Fairy of Animals...and maybe something more.

Ephedian Empresses

Gem (GeminiTay): A princesses searching for her second who hails from a kingdoms that once were a part of the grand empire of Ephedia, thousands of years ago.

Gem, the princess of Dawn and master slayer with her lovely demeanor and lovelier head collection of every foe who's ever threatened her friends, family and subjects.

Hermit Heroes/Miraculous Mob Wranglers

Doc (Docm77) & Zedaph: The animal hero and "anti-hero" of the server, the Hermit Heroes are here to wrangle mobs in a miraculous manner or save the day.

Zedaph, a.k.a. Worm Man is the hero of Renovation with his Kwami "Aannee", able to dig through the Earth and save the city with his shovel and the art of confusion fu.

Doc a.k.a. Ziegrün is the hero-sometimes-villain of Empowerment with his Kwami "Kapper" and trusty goat horn, capable of empowering as many creatures as Doc sees fit whether it be to mess with some Hermits, help a hero out or akumatize a particularly upset Hermit into causing chaos, though Doc swears that he would never do such a thing.

Three Musketeers

False (FalseSymmetry from HermitCraft), Sausage (MythicalSausage from Empires) & fWhip (from Empires): The trio of Mysticons searching for their Ranger, this band of heroes have sworn to protect the Empires of new and old, as well as a certain land of hermits from danger.

False is the Mysticon Knight, always searching for her fellow team members with a broken Dragon Disc and no Codex in sight, but even with all the trials and tribulations, the queen of heads, hearts and body parts refuses to fall to darkness.

Sausage is the Mysticon Dragon Mage, also searching for a certain knight to aid in the quest for the Codex and the magic stolen from his history by more than just an angry king.

fWhip is the Mysticon Striker, a goblin who saw three gold rings one day, went "mine!" and nominated himself Striker, though the Disc did vouch for him so he thankfully got to stay.

Okokokok. I need to brainrot over my own fic for a second here. If you've read Beautiful, Beautiful, hello, welcome, I just wanted to come here and tell you what I picture happening after my closing scene.

I considered including it in the fic, but it just felt like I'd be drawing it out, so we're doing this instead fhsjdj.

Iskall gets home eventually, where Mumbo of course bugs him over it.

“Did you kiss him?” - “If I say yes, will you leave me alone?” - “Well is it true??” - “Yes it is, now let me go scream into a pillow!”

They meet again the next day, tge last day before Iskall leaves and talk about how they wanna handle this, with Iskall going back to Sweden and all. They decide they're gonna try and long-distance it.

This, naturally, leads to them calling a lot on flirting so much on hermitcraft that suddenly editing their episodes takes twice at long because they gotta cut out all the flirting and being sappy.

They don't really wanna tell the hermits just yet, but with Grian and Mumbo already knowing, it soon starts to make the rounds. Plus, it's not like they're subtle.

They visit each other every few months, sometimes in the UK, sometimes in Sweden. Actually, the first like. 3 times are in the UK, with Iskall staying at mumbos because they're low key nervous about staying with each other and all.

Eventually Joel comes to Sweden tho and they get to have some well deserved alone time ;)

Um hii so I may have something to add to the "duo name" discussion going on.

Fanmade duo names are generally established to separate them from shipping. Which is a good idea and we should continue to make an effort to tag shipping. But you know what else is a fanon concept? Not the idea of two CCs being good friends irl, but the fannish idea of shipping their characters. (Excluding CCs who are married / together). So instead of coming up with fanon names for platonic duos who are friends irl, I think we should come up with fanon names for the fannish concept of shipping (who are not together irl / whose characters are not together).

I'm not into QSMP so I cannot speak for that side and I know y'all have a different shipping culture, so this is more for hermitshipping / trafficshipping.

I can't verify this statement but in this post, OP mentions Joe and Cleo didn't want a duo name because they felt like a word + duo couldn't represent their years of friendship. And I can imagine this to be true for many duos especially in HC, which has been going on for so long. Instead of trying to “define” friendship with a word, we can shift the focus to making up a fan name for the fannish concept of shipping them.

Case study 1: Renchanting / Treebark

The ideal scenario: CCs make their own canon platonic name, shippers make their own fannish name for shipping. Treebark is a pun, it's vague, it doesn't overtly mention Ren or Martyn or their brands, and like the more niche duo names, you need to put in effort to understand what this means. Which makes it perfect for shipping in the sense we try to "hide" it. I know people have said it can be frustrating when you see a new duo and don’t know what it means, but I think it’s okay for ship names because they are by design meant to be obscure. You have to make an effort to look for it and understand what it means.

Case study 2: Convex / Cubscar (Ranchers / Solidaritek (?) also goes here)

I think it's called Cubscar based on Cubscar Week? Anyways, a slightly less ideal scenario than Treebark but still very very good. Canon name for platonic stuff, name mashup for romantic stuff. Less elegant that Treebark but it works so who cares. If it works, it works.

Case study 3: Flower Husbands

FH is different in the sense it’s a canon romantic ship and the CCs made the name themselves. I guess FH is still used for platonic but romantic FH would probably be best tagged with shipping to differentiate it.

Case study 4: Rendoc (aka. is this platonic or romantic or what) (Renskall also goes here)

Rendoc is like FH but?? It’s both a ship name and a duo name?? SHIPrendoc? They made it themselves hello?? Rendoc has been around long enough that we just use it for whatever. Like FH, romantic Rendoc should probably be tagged with shipping.

Case study 5: Fress / Stresskall

Long established ship names that sometimes gets used for platonic because it’s faster and we don’t have canon names (at least I think we don’t?). At least I use it for platonic too. It’s different from Rendoc / Renskall in the sense we don’t get a “haha yes ship us” from the CCs. And I think we have enough common sense to tell whether a post is meant to be shippy or not. Eg. “YESS FRESS CRUMBS IN NEW EPISODE!” (about canon platonic interaction), “omg fress in your au is so cute” (depends on context? What’s the AU?), “I think Fress should kiss” (overtly romantic).

These dynamics in particular have been around long enough that it feels weird trying to make a duo name for them (like Jleo). Like, I would rather call platonic Stress+Iskall with Stresskall than, fuckass allium duo or whatever. If it’s tagged with shipping, it’s meant to be seen as shipping. In the absence of canon names, sometimes using name mashups is faster and more efficient.

There are of course exceptions for everything: eg. Desert Duo is well established enough and it’s a good contrast to Scarian. But I think for more niche duos / ships, we can kind of get away with using name mashups? In the absence of canon names?

But I think name mashups are still seen as inherently shippy because that’s how other fandoms make their ship names. (Ironically one of my ships have the name “sniper duo” which is unrelated to mcyt duoification I promise, and is more used descriptively instead of as a tag) So we have to be careful with how we present name mashups especially in public spaces…?

I still think it’s better than making up duo names that few understand. And I think we should reserve our obscure names for the more obscure act of shipping instead. If it’s difficult to find out what it means, why not make it difficult by design? The name mashup tells you who they are, but the obscure ship name tells you explicitly it’s romantic. I know it’s hard trying to twist your thought process the other way because we’re so used to name mashups being for shipping (in other fandoms), but idk I just think it makes sense for fan names to be made for entirely fanmade concepts. And non fanmade concepts (friendships) can stay the way they are. Idk just some thoughts.

it would explain why joel's mail box is so empty besides when etho mails him... maybe the hermits are still mad at him and don't like joel :( the poor guy gets so worked up over it. and really, he can only think to open up with etho nowadays, so he'd cry to etho about how no one likes him, what if everyone hates him again, what did he do now? etho just loves that joel really is all his now!

mmm impulse would be so wary around both joel and etho afterwards >< he'd only be weirded out, that's all! sure, he's overheard some of his friends having sex before but.. those two were on another level. every time joel would visit his neighbour, he'd be acutely aware of etho being.. somewhere. joel had a feeling etho was watching them, maybe he had done something wrong. oh no, what if etho had said something to impulse? he wouldn't though, right? he'd tell joel if something was wrong, wouldn't he? joel couldn't even apologise to impulse, he didn't want to make etho mad, or even just confuse impulse! he'd try and leave gifts for impulse, to try and fix whatever had happened, but impulse never received anything at all :3

Going through the AU once again and I was reminded of Grian blitzing past Andrias on Elytra wings as a distraction followed by Sasha dive bombing him with swords on her own pair, Grian serving as a surrogate mentor to Sasha in Scar's absence, and the idea that the portal is likely open for a good amount of time before they finish preparations on the dragon-duper allowing the resistance to actually have access to Elytra for ever so slightly less time, especially with both Iskall and Ijevin around to go End Raiding (an idea of it's own,) leading me to one cunclusion

Also R&D probably made either rocket boosters or jet packs out of scavenged Frobo parts to act as propulsion for the Elytra.

This is very plausible.

Tango doesn't work out how to do the impossible & build an End Portal til very late in Season 3. Even then, though, they have a bit of breathing room.

After dealing with the existing dragon - if its even there naturally, given how odd Amphibia is compared to other worlds - an effort led by Iskall & Jevin accrues a surplus of elytra. Enough for pretty much every Hermit plus a few others, namely Anne, Sasha, Marcy & - after pleading with Hop Pop - Sprig as well.

And from there begin the lessons.

Anne, Sprig & especially Marcy only learn enough to get by, having other things they'd rather put prep time into. If they make it through this, there'll be time to learn without repeatedly faceplanting, later.

Sasha, however, soars as if it were second nature to her.

Scar - much like the rest of the Earthbound group - is back with the resistance now, but Grian was a big support for Sasha whilst he, Anne & Marcy were gone. A second mentor figure, even if Scar forges a much stronger emotional connection in the long run.

So maybe the fact that Grian's the one leading the flying lessons has something to do with how well Sasha takes to it.

Either way he's impressed, & Scar's just relieved Sasha doesn't take after how he flies. :P

And yes, in the absence or perhaps in the inefficiency of using fireworks in this situation, Frobot derived rocket packs - makeshift as they are, not meant to last long term no matter how much Tango works on them - make these flying fighters all the more dangerous.
