regressor billy butcher!!

Regressor!Billy Butcher Headcannons!

—Not a “traditional regressor” (whatever that means)

—obviously had a lot of trauma as a kid plus he’s constantly tense now as he works which makes it very difficult for him to relax into a regressed headspace so it tends to be more daydreaming than dropping. 

-he’ll watch old cartoons from his childhood that he and his brother weren’t ever allowed to watch. He specifically likes the ones he knew Lenyy used to like. It makes him feel like they’re watching it together and sticking it to their old man. 

-starts to get an itch to have something in his mouth when he’s bordering headspace so he smokes more, chews on pens and his nails, his necklaces find their way into his mouth and so does the tip of his thumb when he’s really distracted. But pacifiers are out of the question no matter how little he gets. 

-Hughie is the only one who tends to notice when he’s doing this behavior or at least he’s the only one that points it out (to Butcher’s dismay and the others discomfort.) They've worked with Butcher long enough to know not to point out personal habits like that. There’s an unspoken social rule there that Hughie doesn’t get. But Butcher doesn’t get as angry with him about it as he does anyone else buuuut he still doesn’t tend to give him any sort of true answer. Hughie knows too many of his “weaknesses” already.

—Hughie once made a joke about getting him a pacifier and he bit through a pen while giving him a dirty look. -What is that baby’s teeth made of?

-Beka used to have a magic touch that could melt him instantly into a regressed headspace. She thought it would help the trauma she knew he still held. She could give him a simple look or say just the right words in that beautiful voice and he would do anything for her. It didn’t feel wrong or embarrassing when she was involved. It was just comforting. 

-that’s another thing that makes it difficult for him now. Part of him desperately craves to drop. to seek out Beka’s comfort again, lay in her lap while her fingers brush through hair, completely at ease for once in his miserable old life. But his bigger, bitter side always pops that bubble of hope. Reminding himself that she’s gone and not coming back. He can’t get himself lost in daydreams for too long or it might somehow affect his big picture plans. 

Sweeter less traumatic headcanons;

—he takes really long baths as a way to treat/pamper himself. With but not limited to: bubbles, lots of rubber ducks, other miscellaneous bath toys he got for cheap at a dollar general, more bubbles, bath salts (to relax his muscles. Not to get high. This time.) and of course Terror laying on the bath mat nearby. 

—His favorite rubber duck is one that’s holding up a middle finger.

—He names all of his rubber ducks.

—he loves to play with Terror while in a younger headspace. It’s way too fun to rile the old bullie up and the squeaky dog toys are fun to make constant noise with. 

—his wardrobe gets even more ridiculous (I love that man’s silly vacation-dad style button ups don't get it twisted.) he’ll be much more inclined to wear “ugly” sweaters. Things with dinosaur knit patterns, frogs, mushrooms, palm trees and flowers, honestly anything. If it’s comfortable and makes the Boys cringe it’s perfect. M.M. is still somehow shocked that he will—without fail—wear a different ugly Christmas sweater nearly everyday of December that they see him. 

(And yes. He does get Terror at least one Christmas sweater that matches one of his.)

—Puppy regressor in the way he growls at you

As gen-AI becomes more normalized (Chappell Roan encouraging it, grifters on the rise, young artists using it), I wanna express how I will never turn to it because it fundamentally bores me to my core. There is no reason for me to want to use gen-AI because I will never want to give up my autonomy in creating art. I never want to become reliant on an inhuman object for expression, least of all if that object is created and controlled by tech companies. I draw not because I want a drawing but because I love the process of drawing. So even in a future where everyone’s accepted it, I’m never gonna sway on this.
