Tour de Fleece 2024 - Day 21
Sometime over the next week or two (maybe after I've finished up the plying of all the yarns, maybe before) I'll share a pic of all the spinning from this year's Tour de Fleece, but for now I ended it with plying the last of the two bobbins I started yesterday. BARELY fit onto the bobbin, too. I'm amazed at just how much yarn I got out of this for just one set of bobbins! It's going to be an amazing amount of yarn to play with over winter!
But for now - I did it! (and I now remember why I usually save my spinning for Tour de Fleece - once a year is a LOT! lol.

ended up taking 2 months to finish but they're finally done! the roving is divine dyeworks oceana, 6oz of merino chain-plied to about 550 yards of light sport/heavy fingering. the streaks of green and purple ended up much less pronounced in the final yarn but honestly i'm fine with it; i like the more subtle heathered look.
#hand spinning#hand spun yarn#i've already told myself i'm gonna use the next one to practice normal plying but i really do not want to. chain-plying is so much easier#the singles get way less tangled. there's no stress about whether they're all the same length. you just spin one and go!#-- admittedly there are bumps at the crossover points but honestly after soaking they've all but disappeared anyway so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯#subcreation#aggressive linguistic prescriptivism

Bought a lighter spindle (0.7oz vs the 1.7oz of my first spindle), spun some thread, and had to triple ply it to get it the same weight as what I'd spun before.
Triple ply is on the left side
Turns out there's a huge difference in texture between the triple plied stuff and the double ply. It's soooo smooth. Looks smooth, feels smooth, nicer in every way except how long it'll take to spin an equivalent amount.
Granted, the texture of the double ply is exaggerated by being overspun, but I don't think I could've spun that finely without the extra twist. (I was really pushing what I could do on that spindle.)
#I got my little sample by trying out ply on the fly#which felt like more trouble than it was worth#but was probably better than wrangling 3 tp bobbins full of fine fuzzy yarn that just want to tangle irreversibly with each other#which I am not looking forwars to dealing with...#my work#spinning#handspinning

#weaving#progress#fiber arts#blamket#finally had time to sit down for a few seconds without being assaulted by toddlers#verdict: this is gonna take like 2 weeks to weave if they keep wearing me out b/c I only had enough energy left to weave for like 30 minutes#and because I don't have a lower dpi heddle and this is low ply yarn the front/back is sticking tigether a bit in the slots#anyways lessons have been learned - I already knew this was a one-off before I started because I'm not crazy about bulky yarn#but this is a gift so it's not to my own tastes#pretty though

oh my gosh oh my gosh i REALLY did not like the way this was spinning up during plying and thought i’d made a terrible mistake but! look at it!! gorgeous. exactly what i was going for. 10/10 past me on your decision making.
2ply fractal spun BFL braid from Sealy MacWheely (in “robin”, i think). might have to get another couple of these because i am absolutely desperate for a full vest in this colour…
plus bonus “i had some left over on one bobbin” chain ply:
#handspinning#handspun#handspun yarn#handspunyarn#they’re wrapped around my hand like bandages because they’ve not been soaked n set yet#so they love to coil up all crinkly#maker spins#having seen the chain ply which imho has a nicer like. chonk to it.#what i really want is 3ply fractal#whiiiiich once i have my new wheel after the move….. i will be able to do…….. hhhhhhhhhhhh#so so so excited#i bought two extra bobbins and a lazy kate so i can do true 3ply and also 4ply#flaps hands abt it

I am thinking of using these sun and moon Granny squares but use this fingering weight yarn I already have instead of buying worsted weight yarn to make a celestial themed Granny square Cardigan.
I dyed the blue yarn myself using Jacquard acid dyes colorway sapphire blue and I have approximately 1,470 yards of it but I don't think that's enough for a crochet Cardigan that's big enough to fit me. Crochet takes more yarn than knitting and I'm not even sure I could knit a Cardigan big enough for me out of it either. Unfooooortunately, this was one of my first dye experiments and I'm not 100% sure I took notes. I will have to check.
The yellow all I have is this half a skein of what I think is Madelinetosh Merino light in colorway Candlewick. Idk i've had it for literally a decade. But I think it'll be enough because I don't plan on having moons or suns on every square. I'm planning on alternating between four small squares sewn together where two are plain blue and two are patterned, and one big Granny square. I would draw what I mean but I am too tired to do that right now.
It took all of my self control to not buy the pattern today. It's only $5.25 CAD which is like $3.97USD/€3.65. But my gf got fired so I'm trying to keep frivolous spending to a minimum. I considered asking if a fiber arts mutual would buy it for me but honestly what they all SHOULD be doing is spraying me like a naughty cat whenever I talk about starting a new project before winter holiday gifts are done.
#man looking at the madelinetosh website is DANGEROUS#they have a colorway called kenergy and it's RIGHT up my alley#madelinetosh merino light is my absolute favorite yarn line. it's single ply and SO squishy#celestial cardigan#v's fiber arts tag#single ply yarn my beloved

look look look at this handdyed fibre I got for christmas 😊
it's 250g of a bfl/silk/llama blend
i split each braid down the middle (more or less) to hopefully preserve the colour gradient & make some 2-ply
looks like it will come out to a light-fingering-to-fingering weight :D
#I LOVE SPINNING#tho i actuary prefer 3ply for knitting these days but it's whatever#(yes I know I could just chain ply the whole thing but I don't really like how that yarn comes out)#(not a fan of the knots)#look what I made#crafts#handspinning

Tour de Fleece, Day 5:
200 grams of 4-ply, DK-or-worsted green sparkle merino nonsense.
With the 100 I did a while back, that brings me to 300g done, 100 left to go.
I always, always underestimate plying. This took me a solid two hours, and I will be sore tomorrow. Which is, incidentally, also why I am not gonna take this off the bobbin today. I'm glad it's done, I'm happy with my progress, but it's also half past five in the morning and I am going the fuck to sleep.
Also, fun fact: My plying involves an utterly cursed, horrifying habit of making plying bracelets once singles start to run out, which allows me to whittle down leftover singles to one single bobbin that is either: a) only a couple inches of stuff and goes into the "future amigurumi stuffing" pile, b) part of a big project and will be used to pad out the next batch of singles, or c) gonna get cable plied (4-ply) or chain plied (3-ply). This usually results in a completely lossless spin!
#hand spinning#handspinning#spinning#handspun yarn#tour de fleece 2024#tour de fleece#guardy's fiber arts tag#clarification: only... 100 grams of this were spun during this TdF#and all I did today was ply#(I'm also REALLY regretting not removing that bit of scrap fiber under the right bobbin before taking a photo)

Ok. So. I have been working on this spinning project, I got this fade pack of roving braids (unspun wool) from my favorite wool vendor, Fossil Fibers. This beaut here
They come with 6 braids but I got 2 packs, so the same amount shown here. I have recently been fascinated by how much the colors will stray if you break them up by weight and am super into cable plied yarn because they are supposed to be resistant to pilling. And the cable ply is technically a 4 ply, so you need to make 4 singles. (Bottom left in diagram)
We have our ply plan and our wool. Time to split TWELVE BRAIDS BY WEIGHT. And lengthwise because we gotta get those color changes
This took me like 3 hours...
