okay I NEED you to elaborate on your headcanon about kuze being mana’s uncle because I absolutely can see it but I wanna know your context specifically (im @designernishiki btw)

Okay so admittedly I didnt come up with it myself, but I read it in this and thought yo why the heck not that shits epic?? Just the idea of Kuze having a niece and being a pretty good uncle?? Good shit right there!

I even started writing a little bit, dunno if I'll ever continue it but here:

It starts with his sister. His sweet, shy sister he never really knew, he never really talked to not because they didn't like each other but because she was five years younger and they had virtually nothing in common.

Throughout the years, they'd lost contact, yet, as Kuze's boxing career is falling apart, a letter arrives. Where Akira got his address from, he doesn't have a clue, but he remembers her handwriting.

They meet at Cafe Alps to catch up. He doesn't recognise her in the beginning, but she recognises him.

"Hold her for a second, would you?", Akira shoves her baby into his arms.

"-Oi!", Daisaku complains, mostly because his hands are made for boxing, for hurting, and he most definitely does not know how to take care of a baby.

But Akira leaves to go to the bathroom before he can get another word in.

Daisaku looks down at the potato. Babies are so ugly. They're deformed, weak and disgusting with drool and snot and even less pleasant bodily secretions everywhere. They scream and they're annoying, but - this isn't his baby. This is Akira's baby. He doesn't have the responsibility of having to do everything right. He won't have to suffer through the majority of the baby's tantrums.

The baby's big eyes follow his finger as he boops its little nose. It scrunches up its face in a way he must admit it decently adorable.

"Oh, you got an attitude.", he remarks with amusement. "That's a good thing. I like you."

The baby stretches out its tiny, tiny hand to play with his finger and he lets it.

Daisaku is overcome by wonder. It's so small, so weak and helpless, yet this is a human. This will one day grow up into an adult. What he is holding in his arms is a life. A pure, young, innocent life.

"I see you've become acquainted!", Akira teases him as she sits down, not making a move to take the baby back.

"Aa. It's got spunk."

His sister chuckles.

"What's it's name?", Daisaku asks.

"Kuze Mana.", Akira responds, looking at the baby with a lot of fondness. The little shit starts gnawing on his finger. He lets her.

"Eh? You're not hitched?"

"Nah, she was an accident, but I wanted to keep her."

"Huh."

"So, Daisaku... How have you been holding up?", Akira asks him, tone becoming a tad bit gentler. "I heard about what's happening with your boxing career."

Kuze clicks his tongue. "Don't believe everything you hear. Reason why things are going downhill is that I did something the Championship doesn't like so they're forcing me to lose. Bunch of fuckers."

Akira hums. "And what, you're just going to let them walk all over you?"

"Pf. As if. The reason I started up boxing is because I wanted to fight people stronger than me, not get tossed around by losers I could defeat in my sleep. I could tough it out, but... This isn't about strength or perseverance. Getting back in the bosses' good graces is gonna take a long time and then it's one wrong move and I'm in the doghouse again.", Kuze snorts derisively. "This is more showbiz than boxing. No, I think I'm done with it. Only question is what happens after."

"Do you have a job in mind yet?"

"No. That's most of the problem.", Kuze admits. "Like hell I'm gonna start an office job or anything like that. Don't exactly have qualifications either."

Akira looks him over critically. "I guess so."

"I have received an offer.", Kuze states, staring at the table. "He said my strength and potential was wasted there."

"Eh? Is it the Yakuza?"

Kuze looks up in shock. "How did you know?"

Akira smiles. "I've had a couple of friends who were in there."

"I see.", he states, still uncertain of what she thinks of it.

A little bit of Majima appreciation time. The only without distinctive praise for him is Yuki, who is also coincidentaly the only hostess not based on JAV actress. Or not.

I like hearing you talk about stuff so what's your favorite game from your childhood? I think mine's either Chrono Trigger or Legend of Mana. Both really beautiful games if you never played.

Oh I've played Chrono Trigger, just never beat it! I have woefully poor attention span (thanks, ADHD!) that if I fall off a game for more than a certain time, I may as well restart it (I have almost had this happen during my Elden Ring run, and had it actually happen in my Yakuza 0 playthrough)

Favorite game from childhood... There's a LOT of choices I can make here. What did I play the most? What do I remember most vividly (if I picked it up today could I still just play it like it was yesterday)? What affected me most emotionally? What shaped a lot of my modern tastes? What just makes me happiest when thinking about it? So many factors, leading to so many choices.

But if I had to choose the one over all that solidifies itself as My Game... It has to be probably one of the most silly, maybe unexpected, but definitely fun choices I could pick, and that is... Coming up after this commercial break! (Hold for applause, banter with contestants)

Welcome back friends, when last we left I was going to reveal my favorite childhood game. And that is... StarFox 64 on the Nintendo 64! I have so, so many reasons to pick this: the music is so fun, the gameplay was mind-blowing for little me, the voice acting was sublime, the replayability was perfect for my tiny brain, and honestly, the True Ending where James McCloud leads you out of the final battle... Still hits me in a particular spot of the heart. But most of all, I just remember wanting with all my heart to be a member of StarFox when I was a kid, flying in the distant cosmos and fighting hordes of enemies... And if I picked it up today, I would still be able to reach that True End.

Yeah... If I had to pick a favorite game from my childhood, that would be the one. Excuse me, I have an emulator to download when I get out of this hellish 12 hour shift.

where does majima state he wants a daughter? i saw ur post and now i also can't stop thinking about that 😩

Right? @snuggetfish made an excellent reference post regarding Majima wanting a child from his cutscenes in Dead Souls (which I personally haven’t played yet). And in the complete hostess video he comments on how he would treat his daughter if he had one.

His comments... kind of show that he’s actually put thought and probably had an idea/dream of wanting a daughter/family. It’s interesting; currently I’m auditing a family mediation program for work and interviewing some parents, you can kind of tell from how they speak about their kids, whether or not some kids were planned or surprises. There’s a lot of intention (not expectation, totally different) in how they speak about their children from parents who planned - which is why I’m of the opinion Majima want(ed) a child of his own.

And also, from the tidbits we see of the Majima Family... for the most part I think this is the closest Majima has to recreating a familial bond. He hosts bbqs with his boys, he remembers all their names, there’s a lot of “intention”. Yeah he’s fucking scary as hell and violent as fuck, but I think that’s his coping mechanism of being a Patriarch in a Yakuza family.

There’s also the instance of the Doll Girl substory and once you complete it, he says something along the lines of “‘Daddy’? Has a nice ring to it heh.” In Yakuza 0, the Doll Girl substory and the hostesses substories also have a paternal feel to it (in regard to Majima’s perspectives, Mana, Chika and Ai had romantic thoughts instead).

Whether or not Majima would be a good father is another question for another day haha.

Games list 2021

New year, more video games. I'm going to go a bit more in detail with this one, giving some personal opinions about each game. 2020 | 2019 New experiences

Gauntlet Slayer Edition An okay game. Decently fun co-op, but way too short. Based on the achievements, they want you to play an 8 hour game for hundreds more, which just isn't worth it.

Human Fall Flat Really fun. Played it co-op, and a bunch of silly stuff happened. Once you know how to break the game, some of the puzzles become inconsequential, but I think that's a good thing.

The Forest I think this is my first foray into survival crafting, and this one's pretty fun. Started it by playing co-op, finished it solo. Co-op definitely would've been more fun.

Persona 5 Royal I have a lot to say about this one, but I'll keep it short. Incredibly fun game with a very satisfying gameplay loop, but it's overhyped as hell.

Valheim The second full survival-crafter I've played, and oh no I'm hooked. The combat's a bit of a chore, but it's fine once you get used to it. The main draw for me is the building and how incredible and modular it is. If this game had a creative mode, there'd be no hope left for me. It's what my life would be dedicated to. X X

Yakuza 0 Honestly, same kind of feelings as P5R. Very fun game with very satisfying combat. From a completionist's perspective, a lot of the side content is largely pointless (doesn't forward the story, doesn't really help strengthen you unless done to near completion, etc.), some of which reeks of "give the intern programmer a task" (e.g. any of the casino games). Most of it is hilarious, so that's fine, though.

Deltarune Ep. 2 I feel this episode had a lot more of Toby flexing his #gamer muscles, but it's all still hilarious and incredibly well-written.

Pico Park A fun short co-op game. I played this with a bunch of college friends. All of us are engineers in some capacity, so we know all about planning, so maybe not as many "wtf are you doing" moments as I would've expected.

Metroid Dread I'm not even that big into Metroid, but GOTY GOTY GOTY GOTY GOTY GOTY GOTY GOTY GOTY

A Bird Story It had been a while since I played To The Moon, but this was still rather nice. I'll get to the actual story eventually.

New Pokémon Snap It's about damn time. They added a bunch of new stuff from the original which my tiny peanut brain too attached to the original couldn't handle sometimes, but it's still a very cozy experience.

Halo Infinite Worth it just for the Grappleshot. Everything else is okay. Revisits

Ring Fit Adventure Kind of an ongoing game, but I made it through the main campaign. Now it's just New Game+, going through the previous areas again. I put it down for a while after getting vaccinated and being able to go back to the actual gym. But now that Apocalypse 2(!) is happening, I might have to pick it back up...

Astroneer Started this one in late 2020, so doesn't really count as a revisit, but whatever. Sort-of-survival-mostly-crafting, which I'm more a fan of. Finished this one off by getting all the achievements with friends.

Hades Also started late 2020. This is probably the only rogue-like I'll ever fully enjoy. Got all the achievements, but there's still plenty more to do. Maybe I'll actually revisit it another day.

Phantasy Star Online 2 (Ep. 4-6), New Genesis Ch.1) Episode 4 makes me want to die with its isekai bullshit. Episode 5 was really good with its isekai bullshit. Episode 6 tied all previous episodes together really well, and was overall super good. New Genesis's changes are fun, but the story seems a bit too generic right now, and there's not a whole lot to do afterwards.

Long Live the Queen Came back to this after like 6 years just for the achievements. I remembered most of the story beats, which was honestly kind of surprising.

Trials of Mana remake I played through with Kevin, Angela, and Duran, the three characters I didn't use when I first played the original, so maybe that hindered my enjoyment a bit. Even aside from that, the gameplay has a bit of a slow start. But I did eventually get really into it. It's very fun, but they really didn't want to spend a lot on voicework resources. Misc. These are ongoing/exclusively multiplayer, etc. games I've played without a well-defined end. Not much more to say about any of them, so they just get the classic list treatment. it's that time of year... the end of year video game retrospective for 2021!!!

My primary gaming goal for this year was to beat every game in my backlog that released pre-2002. By making progress through my backlog at a pace of 2 years per year, I hope to catch up eventually. This year I cleared the PS1 section of my backlog! Hooray! The best of that set was probably Vagrant Story. I did find this game frustrating at times and even gave up on the final boss, but the stuff this game does narratively and aesthetically is astounding. I also got a head start on next year's goal of finishing everything pre-2004.

In total, I beat 33 games this year. A modest number, but I'm happy enough with which games are included. The only 2021 release that's part of that number is the Legend of Mana remaster (along with a couple of free indie games). I did buy a couple of non-recent releases on sale on Steam, but other than them and LoM I didn't spend any money on new games! I did receive a fair amount of recent-ish games as gifts, though.

Here are some of the best games I played this year:

Trials of Mana (remake). I do think being in HD makes some of the silliness more obvious, but a lot is added in terms of gameplay and it's just a really fun time. I plan to come back to it at some point to play with the characters I didn't get to.

The Last of Us Part II. Some really strong emotional storytelling. As a fan of the first game, I was happy.

The Silver Case. Aesthetically, I've never seen anything like this game, and the story did some really great stuff, too. I highly recommend for fans of visual novels.

Yakuza 0. This was my first foray into the series, and what a blast! I definitely plan to play more Yakuza in the future.

Butterfly Soup. Another great visual novel. I think from the outside it's easy to say that VNs are all the same, but games like Butterfly Soup are really out here pushing the genre forward.

Fire Emblem Three Houses. I don't actually count this as completed because I need to play through the other houses, but even just doing the Black Eagle route, I think this takes the top spot in my series ranking. I liked the entire cast, and appreciate that the game is actually about something.

Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (remake). Wow! A contender for the best game I played this year. It's so bright and colourful, the writing is subtle and deep, the design is puzzley without being frustrating. My favourite Zelda game so far!

Honorable mentions: I played three Ace Attorney games this year (3, 4, AAI), trying to catch up a bit; I've already played Xenoblade Chronicles, but I did Definitive Edition this year and really loved Future Connected. I also replayed Xenoblade Chronicles X; I did the first chapter of Higurashi finally, will play more in 2022; I wrapped up the Atelier Dusk trilogy, fun as always; and I am, begrudgingly, getting back into Kingdom Hearts, starting with giving KHIII a second chance and finally trying the ReMind DLC.

I feel like I should mention a couple of games I bounced off of. I played Chrono Cross as part of my goal for this year, and wanted to love it because of its gorgeous visuals and soundtrack, but the gameplay never clicked for me, so I put it down after ten hours. I also wanted to love Muramasa: the Demon Blade because I am so in love with Odin Sphere, but alas, Muramasa is simply worse in every aspect. I didn't get very far. Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII was really good for the first 30-40 hours, and then I kind of hated my last ten hours with it before giving up at the final boss. It could have been something special if it was just tightened up a bit.

Next year my main goal, as stated, is to play everything in my backlog from pre-2004. That includes a couple of PS2 games and not much else, so I may shift it to pre-2005 depending on how things go. That said, I do have some other things I plan to play: 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim (finally! I'm very excited), The 25th Ward: The Silver Case, Persona 5 Royal (about time, after playing vanilla P5 on release), Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory, continuing my Zelda journey with Minish Cap, and continuing my Ace Attorney journey with Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright.

Part of why I played fewer games this year than usual is because I spent more time working on my own game. With any luck, Desert of Ash: a Post-Apocalyptic Gay Sex Simulator will release in 2022, so please look forward to it if you're gay and horny!
