Training for a half marathon in the heat? Just sweat it out

As the weather cools down, I will still sweat a bucket load. But at least Ill be able to ditch the sunnies and sunscreen, and I can kiss short-induced chafe goodbye. Andrew Taylor, senior reporterWringing out a dishcloth that has mopped up the office kitchen at the end of the day will give you an idea of the sweat the male of the species produces during a short jog on a humid Sydney day. Headphones slip out of moist ears, great bands of sweat circle the underarms like the rings of Saturn and socks and shoes are removed at considerable risk to their owner. A paddle in the surf followed by a beer seems like a healthier training session at this time of year, but sadly the experts disagree. Personal trainer Jim Owens will be providing advice and stern words when we slack off in the lead up to the SMH Half Marathon on May 20. Owens suggests early mornings, loose clothing and, well, stop complaining. "With the high humidity we experience at this time of year in Sydney, it's very important to ensure you are well hydrated which means drinking more water and also adding electrolytes on your training days," he says. "Motivation is easy once you set a goal and it is also a good idea to train with a friend or in a group which will keep you accountable and more fun." Larina Mullins, editorial counselI usually look at the weather app on my phone before I even get out of bed to go for a run. But I forget to check the humidity! That can make the difference between an enjoyable run and an energy-sucking slog. I've been getting up earlier to beat the heat. I am still in the sunshine though, so sunscreen is a must. I use the Cancer Council's sport sunscreen that is sweat resistant and doesn't run into my eyes (so Rachel, give that a go). I foolishly havent been using it between my leggings and shoes. Ive now got tan lines around my ankles that make it look like Im always wearing white socks. Its quite a fashion statement. When I started running I wore cotton shirts but they got drenched and felt like they weighed a tonne. Ive replaced them with quick-drying fabrics instead. I also avoided electrolyte drinks because of the calories but Ive recently found some that are sugar-free. I do feel like I recover faster when I have one. I am glad to hear Jim recommends electrolytes I was worried it was just a gimmick and the effect was all in my head. Register for the SMH Half Marathon at the event website.
