Just finished Farewell Fireworks!

And I liked it! Admittedly I'm biased because design wise these are some of my favorite espers, but I really did enjoy it!

I'm a bit surprised they went with the "espers are somewhat of an oppressed minority" approach, though it's been implied to be something that happens behind closed doors (see, the esper black market from Brewster's event and the treatment of espers in Nether Gaol) it's rarely brought to the forefront. I like how they did it though, perhaps I'm just used to the Esper Union making their workers lowkey celebrities that I forget that average espers don't have it as easy.

I liked the conflict between Yu Ran and Yu Xu, the idea that the former chooses to be more docile and accepting of mistreatment as to keep a career and the other is more critical of it is an interesting juxtaposition to explore. You see this a lot among minority groups – see, the pick me and the feminist dichotomy. I sort of wish they delved into it a little bit more, but the event wasn't necessarily about that so we move.

Su Jue stole the show for me and she was absolutely justified in everything she did, and I would not have been upset had she actually killed Li Tiangang herself. I'm sorry, but based on the sprite used she was a teen/young woman when she was incarcerated and abused. Again, the way Dislyte consistently highlights that inmate abuse is a prevalent thing in their universe is so fascinating because few do that, and the few that do try and downplay it and make it seem like deserved retribution. I won't say Su Jue didn't deserve to be arrested, but she sure as hell didn't deserved to be cut, sliced, burned, force fed medicine and perved on by old creepy guards. #SuJueDidNothingWrong #RestInPissLiTiangang

I have mixed feelings towards Qin Shui. On one hand his plan to frame espers and crack down on them was inexcusable, but I can't help but empathize with his plight, I mean, Li Tiangang is an abusive, cruel man and so I struggle to truly hold anything against the guy who finally snuffed him out lmao. Though, I don't really know Ren Xian, is he from one of the other events I missed? If so oof, if not then I really hope he shows up, Qin Shui seemed genuinely afraid of him and now I'm hella curious.

TLDR: It was a really good event and I loved every character involved! Except Li Tiangang, he's playing double dutch with Epstein in hell as we speak.

Story notes for the nonnie who asked. Original shortfic is over here. Quick summary:

Timeline where all the Jin bastards are "legitimate" (read: take that with many grains of salt) because Jin Guangshan was a different stripe of asshole and kept all their mothers as willing or unwilling concubines. Also when the war broke out, he threw his support behind Wen Ruohan, resulting in the Sunshot Campaign being crushed after Nie Mingjue was killed on the battlefield.

Okay, so!

It quickly becomes apparent that Wen Xu is not pleased Huaisang was sold to someone else (he was supposed to be delivered directly to him and there was a mixup in the orders, people literally die over this), so the brothers have to make an effort to keep Huaisang hidden from him both for their sake and for his (because it's not real hard to guess motive).

As they become more and more attached to him and sympathetic to his situation, they start treating him less like a decoration or a pet and more like a... well, it's complicated.

They eventually enlist help from their half-sister Qin Su (her parentage is known, but Qin Cangye refused to give her or her mother up and Jin Guangshan was eventually convinced it would be Bad PR to steal his supposed best friend's wife by force) for any time it becomes apparent Huaisang won't be safe to hide anywhere in Koi Tower and he has to be stashed somewhere else.

Because she doesn't wear Jin colors, Huaisang is slightly less of a blank doll with her, to the point that she can eventually coax him into 'speaking' via little written notes. Once he becomes aware of how hard they're working to keep him out of the inner Wen family's hands, he starts warming up to the brothers.

He is never going to fully recover from his brother's death and whatever happened between the Wen forces arriving to take him captive and him being sold, but the three siblings working together are able to put some of his pieces back together.

Eventually Jin Zixuan accidentally discovers what his brothers and sister have been doing, but since he never liked his father siding with Wen Ruohan in the first place, he doesn't rat them out, and even (awkwardly) covers for them whenever someone who'd be much less sympathetic is on the verge of discovering Huaisang.

(He has his own secrets to keep, namely he and his own "war prize" wife (really, Father, please stop bringing that up) Jiang Yanli have been hiding the fact that her brother and martial brother are still alive somewhere.)

So basically now, four out of however many Jinsibs are all working to harbor people Jin Guangshan's "friends" want to get their hands on really badly.

Hm, I can tell there are pieces missing from this list but I can't remember exactly what they were. I think there was a plan that if Huaisang was ever discovered, Qin Su was going to try to claim him as a betrothed? But that their relationship was pretty much just cuddly platonic?

Probably top tier of storyline being so messed not making a lick of sense, especially in the beginning episodes. It takes a handful of episodes at least to episode eight where the storyline takes a bit of form, but nothing really still connects with lots of plot holes. What draws you in though is the phenomenal chemistry between the main leads, for me especially Liu Yichang is a huge highlight in this. The rest of the cast is amazing as well. I love the whole dynamic of all of them together.
