Wen Ying turns around for what seems like the millionth time to his friend to stare at him; (and actually making eye contact with him this time due to his head not being in his hands in his current despair) Wen Ning just looked back at him in disbelieving confusion. They could still hear the sword man yelling at them and gradually increasing in volume.

Yep! Can't understand shit this guy's saying! It's all gibberish over here my man! Nothing to see nothing to hear!

Ok. They were in a boat. They were in a boat in Yunmeng fucking Jiang- an ancient version of Yunmeng fucking Jiang! And there was some historical looking guy with a sword dressed in an achingly familiar shade of purple shouting at them in what Wei Ying was pretty sure was a super old version of the Yunmeng dialect that had long since evolved out from and was no longer being spoken or used outside of linguists trying to translate old documents that had somehow survived to the twenty-first century.

So. They were stuck in a boat in ancient China. Ok. Cool. Whatever. No big deal this is no big deal- this is TOTALLY! NO BIG-

Wei Ying put in his best "we're kind of fucked actually" smile. Wen Ning gifted a perfect thousand yard stare right back to him, seemingly coming to at least a similar conclusion of his own.

Yeah, Wei Ying let out a long sigh through his nose, he was gonna rip that supplier a new asshole or two when they got back.

I'm thinking about MY as LQR's son. I'm not sure how it happened (Maybe Lao Nie or WRH dragged him to a brothel before things went downhill, maybe LQR didn't always have a stick up his ass, he's a Lan but he's still a second son) anyway, so on.

I think it would be interesting to watch as things develop because LQR probably wouldn't want others to know he's visited a brothel at some point (even though lying is forbidden but LQR breaks a bunch of rules in the novel anyway), so he wouldn't name MY Lan even if he treats him as part of the main family (like the WWX and JFM situation)

You know xiyao first meet? It's pretty damn obvious LXC fell for him at first sight and the thing is he would here too. Because he doesn't know they're related! I think it's funny that MY has to constantly dodge his (very subtle admittedly) attemps at flirting because they're cousins and he can't say anything because LQR doesn't want him to.

And this would give MY an entirely different breed of daddy issues! LQR is fundamentally good but he's not exactly loving, and MY has to go above and beyond to get the tiniest bit of praise from him. Kinda like having an openly POS parent (aka JGS) and being at peace with that/ not having lots of expectations vs living with someone who you know loves you but is at the same time very strict and has very high expectations so you want their approval because you know you can get it if you just try hard enough.

And then SMS comes in! He has his reservations regarding MY at first (because we know cql SMS was loyal to LXC before it all went to hell), (LXC just cant appreciate undying obsessive devotion smh) and maybe sees him as a threath, but then MY is genuinely nice to him and remembers him, acknowledges him in a way neither the twin jades nor LQR ever did, and even praises him for his hard work, so SMS is absolutely hooked

And they fall in love! MY is kinda afraid to ask LQR for his blessing but by the time he does the wangxian stuff already happened (and maybe nielan shenanigans, I firmly believe LQR would disaprove of NMJ bc of the violence of the Nie cultivation and the utilisation of resentful energy that comes with it) and he's just relieved his son isn't in love with a war criminal or a violent brute (as he percieves NMJ)

And then MY becomes Lan Yao (and gets a courtesy name, thinking shuài 帅 as in handsome/graceful/smart and ráo 饶 because it has connotations of abundance and forgiveness/mercy, two things the Lan sect values, so Lán Shuàiráo 蓝帅饶)

LXC utterly horrified at having fallen for his cousin lmao

And then there's the part of canon where we know SMS walked out of the Lan sect by his own foot! And I think we can assume it was out of shame, so like, JGY defending him! The Lans scorning him for attemping to sacrifice Mianmian, but JGY, who feels secure within the Lan sect, and who values his life above nearly anything, would go "No, no, you were afraid and under threath of death, I'd do that too" and convinces SMS to stay, while shutting down everything throw SMS's way

Cue SMS thriving and happy as (maybe) Lan-furen serving JGY in every way like the loyal dog he is (as in canon)

AAAHHHHHH I LOVE THIS!!

I've seen a couple fics/scenarios in which MY was born into or made part of the Nie and the Jiang, but idk if I've come across him being part of the Lan. I vibe with the idea of him being the child of LQR (and a product of one of the man's wildest and probably most regretable decisions lol).

It's interesting that it would lead him to have a whole new brand of daddy issues, a milder kind too since he's not at risk of getting thrown out at the smallest mistake and that at least he knows that his father's praise IS obtainable, if not easily. In any case, he would keep his nuanced mentality at still not being fully honored as a true son of the Lan and all, but not his extreme survivor mentality that often led him to tolerate abuse.

Lol it's ironic tho how he just can't escape the incest XD

But I love him and SMS getting together!! In a place like the Lan sect, they truly would be different in their approach to the whole righteous rules thing, and they would find companionship and kinship in each other, eventually turning into love. Especially in how JGY would be the only reason why SMS would stay there.

It seems like no matter what happened, Wei Wuxian will always be surprised by the sheer unconditionality of Jiang Cheng's love and faith.

None of them want to be doing any of this. Thanks to the Juniors, they don’t exactly have a choice. (Or, wherein the Juniors accidentally write a cursed fanfiction, and everyone has to reenact their parts in it, or potentially cease to exist).

I never see Jiang Cheng's hesitancy toward leadership discussed, and I feel like it cements the resentment that forms in his relationship with Wei Wuxian. It is very subtle, but apparent in the time skip and current plot line. Today we'll be focusing on the time skip bits.

People have definitely noticed (and discussed) JC's camaraderie with NHS in the Lan Exchange arc. Many have identified that NHS doesn't present a threat to JC and I can agree-- but NHS is a useful 3rd man on that totem pole. He isn't vying for second. He's here to follow, chill out, paint fans, catch birds and support shenanigans.

JC doesn't question WWX's leadership once during this period. He is constantly negative, points out (percieved) flaws WWX has, but ultimately? JC is here for the ride. I'd go so far as to say JC doesn't like WWXs budding friendship with LWJ at this point because his position as second is threatened. It doesn't seem to be as simple as WWX liking LWJ more-- no no.

JC has never observed WWX actively seeking another person's approval. He loves that WWX appears not to need approval, needs it more than anything in the world, and WWX gives it to him freely. (JC has a complicated number of mommy and daddy issues others have extrapolated upon in depth).

The Wen clan camp cements this for me. JC is definitely poking WWX about not making trouble, but he does it in this goading manner that I find fascinating.

7 Seas pg 20: "Why are you restraining me?"

WWX has already promised to do what he's told, he's fully prepared to give up his sword (if LWJ does the same) and he's not about to start a fight. JC is dying to see the rebellious streak rear it's lovely head, and he's literally like "I expect you to have a problem with this" but WWX, while not loving it, recognizes that there is not choice here.

Moreover, with the Xuanwu of Slaughter, WWX outright orders JC to take care of the hostages and get them out. Does JC hesitate? Yeah. There's a bloodthirsty monster eying WWX, but he accepts his position as second. Yup, I can do that for ya sir.

Infamous golden core incident: JC, heir to the sect, runs interference for WWX because he feels WWX is more prepared to survive and has more commonality with the sect, as established in that horrifying post cave interaction.

Also part of the post cave Jiang Family cluster of chaos (and originator of the famed Yunmeng promise)- JC spends that whole interaction looking for WWXs approval. I didn't get to you fast enough? What do you mean I'm not good enough? My dad hates me and I'm an awful leader. 🤩 You think I'm good enough to follow? I will carry these words with me for the rest of my life!!!! (And embellish the hell out of what was said).

Of course this falls apart when JC is suddenly in charge, WWX stops freely giving JC the approval, and stops telling JC about very important bits of his life. Can we all acknowledge that JC knew WWX didn't have a golden core? Like, I'm willing to go with he didn't know WWX gave JC his golden core (at this point), but come on. WWX told him he was caught by Wen Chao and Wen Zhulu. That's how JC lost his golden core. What, does he think only his golden core would get vaporized? It's why he goes so bonkers about Suiban. He's mad WWX didn't confide in him, and he can't push it out of him either.

That's kind of sad. I'm not forgiving JC back here, but how lonely was this guy? And then his very closest confidant in the world, who he's expected approval from, leaves the sect because of an integrity beef? Heartbreaking for JC (who is still a jerk for demanding elderly, injured, sick people and toddlers be forced back into work camps).

If we look on this in the context of the post massacre breakdown, we can see it happening in real time.

JC turns to go back. WWX says hey, no, please don't do that.

WWX reminds JC that he was entrusted with JCs care and safety (power differential, parental approval) and JC goes feral, STRANGLING the disapproval right out of WWXs throat. While chastising him for saving LWJ (which isn't how it happened, he saved Mian Mian, but LWJ is getting scarily more approval than JC and he CANNOT abide it).

We look ahead to the post station (omg the post station makes me cry every time), and he is so concerned about getting more of WWXs approval than LWJ, he legit doesn't even check to make sure WWX is okay. I swear that hug was just about proving himself more imperative to WWX than LWJ.

As soon as the approval dries up, JC is at WWXs throat. He doesn't do much to curb WWXs behavior with others, but complains about WWXs morals constantly, and demands he stop being more exceptional than the other cultivators, not because JC is offended about being bested (back here) but because others are offended.

JGS uses this dynamic to his advantage, too! Mindblowingly, it is the first place he goes in their discussion, and JC has the wearwithall to question it. But then he shows up to the Burial Mounds to demand WWX give it to him all over, and WWX can't anymore. He's tired, he's sick, he hates the cultivation world, and he is without support (because JC can't figure out how to support someone he views as a superior, see mommy and daddy issues galore).

JYLs death coincided with him recognizing that WWX was endangered by his actions, following hurt feelings over the "defection", which was supposedly for show. JC going to the burial mounds to kill him alongside the cultivation clans was honestly... just so mood for him.

His mantra was if I can't have you, no one will. I'm real glad those match makers got his number, because can you imagine being trapped in a marriage with this guy? (JC stans, I love you and I'm with you, but all the I can fix him energy in the world isn't gonna work on him at this point, he is literally 3 poisons. Please dont put up with that shit in real life because it meets IPV criteria).

Doot doot~ part 2. I am debating switching perspectives to lwj next time (which will likely be Tuesday), but that would make this chapter very short... Hmm~ decisions, decisions.

wwx felt his thoughts short-circuit as the man’s fingers stretched his hole apart, mortification shooting through him as his assailant hummed in appreciation.

“Just as pretty inside as out,” he said and wwx had to cover up the embarrassed laugh that did escape him this time as a cough. “I bet it will feel even better inside you that I could ever imagine. I bet it will feel better than anyone else I’ve ever been with has.”

wwx’s heart stuttered slightly at his words—anyone else. He hadn’t been with anyone else and– and here, like this… it felt almost like he should admit the truth—admit that he was a virgin to lwj. It felt like the right thing to do—the sensible thing to do—but it felt like it might risk this moment—their entire relationship—and that wasn’t something wwx was willing to do. “Oh yeah? Better than all the other people you’ve r*ped in the past?” he managed to spit out instead of the truth bubbling inside him, threatening to escape and ruin everything—even if wwx wasn’t willing to acknowledge what exactly it was that he was at risk of ruining with all his lies and half-truths. “I bet you’re gonna be the worst fuck of my life.” Well, technically, if it was the only fuck of his life, it would be the worst, right? Also the best, but that was besides the point!

Behind him, the man—or perhaps the real lwj—huffed a laugh. “Is that so?” he asked, leaning in to nip at the back of wwx’s neck and send a shudder down his spine that totally, completely, 100% did NOT make his cock twitch. “Well,” the man added as he ripped his fingers free and wwx felt that big ass weapon line itself up with his—well—ass, “I can live with being the worst fuck of your life, as long as I’m the last.”

wwx screamed—from lwj’s words or from the sensation, even he wasn’t sure—as the man slammed into him. It didn’t hurt, even though lwj’s cock had pushed itself far further into him than his fingers had managed, but the sensation itself was overwhelming. lwj was everywhere—around him, within him, surrounding and containing and filling him to the brim and his hole was spasming around the man’s giant cock—trying to figure out what to do with this strange turn of events, maybe? lwj hummed behind him, his own breath soft against wwx’s neck as his chest pressed slow, steady breaths into his back. “I wouldn’t know,” he said blandly and wwx had to laugh again.

“No?” he asked between shuddering laughs and broken breaths. “Don’t have any real experience?”

“No,” lwj said, “only pretend play. Usually I would keep going, however you have already had rough morning. I do not want to overwhelm you and let you drop. I also…” he started, his own breath catching for a moment before he continued, his thumb still rubbing those small little circles into wwx’s hip bone, around and around and around, calming and aggravating and grounding all at once. “I also,” he started again, voice almost shaky and making wwx’s heart squeeze a bit, “do not want you to grow to associate sex—with me,” he added hastily, and had wwx been in a clear state of mind he may have questioned the awkwardness in his dom’s voice, but as it was, he simply continued breathing through the stretch of the man inside him and the heaviness of his words, “as anything bad. To be unable to do this—or even other things—again because I accidentally hurt or traumatized you.”

wwx’s heart squeezed impossibly tighter, eyes fluttering shut as he focused on the feel of the moment. lwj’s back breathing into his, his thumb rubbing maddening—soothing—little circles onto his hip, and that weapon of destruction filling him up. “I don’t hate it,” he finally whispered. “You aren’t gonna hurt or traumatize me,” he added, fingers flexing where lwj was still holding his hands hostage between them. “Now,” he asked, twisting slightly and flashing the most confident, bratty smile he could manage at the man, “you gonna r*pe me, or what?”

“Mn…” lwj hummed, the grip around wwx’s hands tightening as he began to pull out. “Yes, yes I am.”

For all it's worth, the most jarring thing to me besides the yungmeng shuangjie focus of the show was that fucking comb scene and "love triangle"

Wen Qing didn't have any romantic feelings for WWX,, they would make good queerplatonic partners but WWX doesn't see her in a romantic light ever.

Maybe this is also my gripe with how we can't ever have friendships without them being sexualized because yeah, they're in the burial mounds and they totally fucked because yknow they're hot and how could wwx not want to marry her to protect her and the wens?

The whole love triangle thing felt so weird to me. But seriously why the hell was that even a thing?

Because for some reason when Modaozushi was being looked at by the script writers and directors and they had to figure out how to adapt it without being gay or full of necromancy, both things banned on television, the answers they came up with were “Yin Iron and living people puppets are the evil of four episodes and weird nudging of “they’re almost dead” around Wen Ning and Baxia taking Nie Mingjue’s place”, and “everyone is now in love with Wen Qing with Wei Wuxian and Wen Qing as the end game.”

Yes. Seriously. Be thankful we got the CQL we did. I may rag on it for poor framing around Jiang Cheng and weird plot decisions, but it could have been so much worse. I am glad we got what we did, it did let me get into Modaozushi in a way that the initial CQL would have not.

And I totally get you on being annoyed about people celebrating platonic relationships, yet immediately sexualizing and romanticizing any actual platonic relationships. In addition, I find it incredibly tone deaf and modern Ameri-centric to insist that of course they could have had an affair in the burial mounds, especially given the setting and culture in which this takes place. Pre-marital sex was incredibly looked down on, especially for the women involved, and even MXTX confirms that while Wangxian did have sex before marriage, they completed their third bow before they had any more sex, so the rest of it is all in wedlock.

I do like the comb subplot in theory. If Jiang Cheng had more consistent proper framing around his actions and character in CQL, it would be another good way to hone the growing bitterness and inflexibility of him, and the dichotomy between him and Wei Wuxian in that Wei Wuxian is willing to give up everything to protect all of the Wens, but Jiang Cheng, who has the power to protect them without losing anything, insists that he would only save Wen Qing and that is final, telling her that she can either live and live with his hatred of her whole family, or she can die with the rest of them. Why wouldn’t she return the comb when it is clear how little his offer of protection means? Why would anyone want to marry a man who insists that he hates everything she is from regardless of who they are?

But alas, Jiang Cheng has so much undermining in film language in CQL and thus combined with the other general weirdness, the plot is lost and we end up with yet another Jiang Cheng ship that I have to filter out of so many fics because clearly he loved her, so they should be together in half the damn fics ever written.

Anyway, salt over. I normally wouldn’t be so grouchy about it, but I’m rewatching CQL for The Young, The Horny, The Jaded and the Jade: Partners in Time reason and I’m just reminded of all the weird choices that CQL made there as I have to remind myself over and over again that Jiang Cheng in the book and script is a character I enjoy far more than his CQL take.

I still try to undertand the logic going inside the brains of people who say "Well, why are you even writting the wholeass bible to badmouth 'X'?" ("X" character who is canonically a complete asshole who kills innocent people, gaslight people, plays the victim to escape the consequences of their own actions, blame others for what they did, blame-shift, victim-blame, terrorize people, yada yada).

I'm not saying you can't like said character. Far from me telling you who you should like, you and your likes are not my business and you can stan whoever you like, be them real or fictional. The thing is: other's and their dislikes is also not your business, specially if they have a completelly fair and reasonable reason to find a character disgusting.

Let's use Jiang Cheng from MDZS as an exemple: the man did suffer? Hell, yeah. He saw his whole sect being murdered, saw his parents being murdered, had to become a sect leader at a far too young age and then saw his sister being killed too. If that does not count as suffering, I don't know what does. That's totally ok if you feel for him, I do too, I think no one should suffer like that and I also think he is a pretty interesting charactet who adds to the story.

The thing is, the man also announced Wei Wuxian was now an enemy of the cultivation world when the plan was just for them to stage a fight and say the said sect brother has left the sect (that made public opinion of Wei Wucian even worse and contibuted to Jin Guangshan's and Jin Gangyao's plan of getting rid of Wei Wuxian to get tue Stygian Tiget seal to themselves), what makes clear that the thing that made him turn against WWX wasn't Jiamg Yanli's death; he lied to people saying WWX killed JY when JY willingly put herself on the way of the sword meant to pierce through WWX, when she willingly died to protect WWX; he led a siege against innocent people when he knew that they were civilians and that there was even a damn barelly 3 years old child amongst them (not taking the blame away from the other sects, because there is no way you put your sword through an old granny and doesn't notice it isn't an armed cultivator); for 13 years he continuously tortured and killed innocent people to the point of where his nephew was willing to lie to him to help one of them escape because he knew exactly the atrocities his uncle was capable of; civilians around Lotus Pier were afraid of him; his behaviour crosses the line so much that all female cultivators blacklisted him (and given it was at a time where men were excused from plently of shitty behaviour, that is quite surprising); he has the annoying mania of playing the victim, and so the list goes on.

So yeah, do you really has such a thick face to say that people who don't like him don't have the right to dislike him only because "he looked hot with doing that", "he suffered too" or whatever the hell your excuse is?

People who dislike a character have the right of disliking them and writting a wholeass bible about it just like you have the right of writting a wholeass bible worshiping the ground said character walks on. However, it's quite interesting how I seldom see antis clowining stans posts, but it's quite common to see stans complaining on anti posts. It's a two ways road, so get over yourself and stop whinning like a child that is mad because someone didn't find their toy as cool as they think it is.

absolute king for disrupting the entire plot with an unrelated personal grudge. the beauty of the Hundred Holes Curse being revealed, WWX being like 'why did you do that? I've never done anything to you, hell I've never even met you before to my knowledge' and SMS just being like 'yeah because not everything is about you, I cursed jzx for personal reasons, dumbass' lives on in my heart.

(also cherished of my heart in that scene: the exchange where LXC is like 'why do you dislike Wangji :(' and SMS is like 'wHy Do i DiSLikE LaN wANgJi do I need a fucking permit to not like Lan Wangji? HE'S AN ASSHOLE')

so i just spent most of the day ranting about some particularly egregious things 😂 because in my perusal of the sms tag on here and ao3 and my occasional forays to twitter i have seen about every possible bad take known to man. On a general level I just want people to comprehend that he's a complex character who's clearly, like jgy and xy, meant to be a mix of villainous and sympathetic, and not Flat Joke Villain #9. I would just like people to acknowledge he has aspects at all, lol.

one (or more) headcanon(s) i have about this character

Moling loves him. I like to write it as a merchantile-heavy city that never had a comfortable relationship with the 'we are above earthly things' Great Sect nearest to them, and didn't have any smaller sect in the area, so when one of their own came back and set up a new sect instead of staying at that stuck-up Lan sect a lot of people were into it. Also in the bent of 'things from the earlier draft aren't true unless i like them', I generally keep as canon the detail that sms did well during the Sunshot campaign (look, he was almost suicidally depressed during that time and life loves giving him exactly what he doesn't want atm. him actually winning some shit by trying to throw himself into unwinnable fights feels like exactly the black comedy his teen years were made of) and hc that it was close enough to Moling that a lot of people are impressed by that as well. not to mention he has connections to the Jin, which bring more money into town! Absolute local legend. Only flaw is that he keeps turning down suggestions of marriage, but we can live with that.

essentially, you know how the Moling Su disciples start fighting with the Lan disciples in that one scene about 'WELL, MAYBE HE'S GREAT ACTUALLY, COULD YOU START A SECT'? the whole city of Moling is Like That.

one character i love seeing them interact with

...jin guangyao. i mean, can i put anyone else. when i type 'e' into my browser bar it defeatedly directs me to Untamed Episode 26 because I have rewatched jgy and sms' first meeting for the seratonin so many times. It's just so good to see JGY being polite and considerate to him, and sms first reacting with shock and then Insane Levels of Devotion (I usually talk book version more, but shout out to Feng Cong for nailing this facial progression in CQL, watching him as SMS going from distress to confusion to more confusion to slowly dawning joy is so good.) And the later Moments Indicating Long-Held Intimacy between them are. Really something, I think about SMS taking the bottle out of JGY's hand because JGY is struggling with it and giving him the medicine, and JGY giving him the medicine packet later (shoutout to CQL for turning that into a whole period-romance-level hand focus moment), not to mention sms bandaging his shoulder with strips from his own robes, d a i l y.

writing this, I love how much of their intimacy is based in wounds and the care thereof? jgy receives a loooot of casual and not-so casual violence in the narrative and rarely receives any sort of care for it (the only other person who tends his wounds onscreen is uh... lxc, who immediately follows it up by stabbing him) so sms' attentiveness to his physical damage and pain, and clear familiarity with is almost a shocking level of care and intimacy. just. jin guangyao gets his arm cut off and su minshan screams. jgy is out of medicine because, presumably, he gave the last of it to sms just a few minutes ago. i'm on to something here. or possibly just having a breakdown. give me a minute.

one character i wish they would interact with/interact with more

I put wishing for more sms-xy interaction on xy's question, so for this one I'll put that (book canon) I'd kill to see him run into mianmian again. CQL canon, I wouldn't have minded a few more scenes with LXC or LQR back in the day.

Yeah it's just like ?? Idk op's top posts seemed fairly reasonable so I guess this is just another "Jiang Cheng eats people's brains" scenario. I think the biggest issue I have with this kind of discourse in general is the notion that "Jiang Cheng is ruining the Jiang sect by being Jiang Cheng" which I feel is weird on a lot of levels that just indicate that you straight up didn't understand half of what was going on in mdzs.

1. The Jiang sect was already ruined. You read about it. It was burned down and everyone except the sect heirs and wwx were killed, what's not clicking. The main reason that Jiang sect doesn't have many junior disciples is most likely because idk , many of the vulnerable young denizens of ymj were killed and as hard as Jiang Cheng tries, he can't force everyone in lotus pier to repopulate like shinzo abe convincing people to get married with anime. This also connects to:

2. The way sects work in mdzs is explicitly hereditary. This is a HUGE point in the world-building-- sure jc could theoretically adopt a bunch of kids or something, but what's the precedent for that? Baoshan Sanren's mountain? Blood ties are everything in mdzs. And this leads into:

3. The implication that Jiang Cheng is ruining his own sect by not getting married and having kids. I don't think I need to elaborate much on this being ummm weird as hell in many ways and also wrong because guess who else doesn't have a wife or kids... Lan Xichen?

- Idk where people are assuming that Yunmeng Jiang/Jiang Cheng are like. explicitly ultra classist? Please keep in mind that the entire WORLD of mdzs is classist, this is a huge point of critique in the book that you literally could not miss unless you didn't read it. Oh you know what else is awful :Re people's reactions to JC's childhood? A lot of JFM apologism consists of 'that's just how (Chinese) fathers are'.

Like maybe MXTX was trying to get at something, what with the yunmeng siblings having terrible coping mechanisms and poor communication, when she wrote JFM.

Why does everyone just assume JFM was a good parent just because WWX puts him in a good light? Of course he does! WWX's other option is sleeping on the streets so of course he regards JFM as kind and charitable!

But that doesn't erase the fact that JFM is a neglectful father who babysits his 'easiest to get along with' child when he feels like and leaves him for his wife to abuse when he does not to WWX, and a neglectful father who ignores his heir who is desperate to for validation, or a neglectful father who leaves his eldest daughter to raise the other children while making major life decisions for her without consulting her. Just because this is 'normal' does not make it right.

look, im not here to tell anyone who to like or who to hate but there is a Lot of JFM apologism that absolutely reeks of misogyny. And I don't say that lightly.

Saying "thats just how fathers are" doesn't... make him a good dad. It really doesn't excuse anything, it just says that you think it's okay for fathers to be bad parents because it's just what happens. Instead of like, acknowledging that it's not a good thing to be and that a good parent should yknow, be a parent.

Both Madam Yu and JFM are both horrible parents they're just on opposite sides of the spectrum. JFM is no less neglectful and abusive just because he isn't screaming. He doesn't parent any of his kids, he just exists with them and relies on the fact that his wife taught his son and daughter responsibility and hopes that WWX will learn it through osmosis or by his wife. He's a glorified babysitter at best and while WWX does put him on a pedestal, we also see JFM being neglectful in canon multiple times, and WWX is not a reliable narrator. Just because he says that JFM is great and wondrous, doesn't mean that he is especially when we then get scenes of proof that he just sucks. (Also a lot of those moments of him being a good uncle are just... JFM letting him get away with shit.)

And honestly like, if your kid goes around wondering if you actually like him then you've failed as a parent. No matter how good you are to the other kid. You don't get to just choose a kid to care for (which he does in like the worst way). I get that people like characters that are good to their fav and the MC but sometimes man,,, idk I don't like him lmao. He's not a good father even to WWX and it irritates me when ppl act like he was, or blame JC and Yanli for JFM being a shit dad. Or when they blame Madam Yu for Fengmian being a shit dad. Like no, look. I get it. You hate your wife (who you signed up to marry) and you feel like you got the short end of the stick. The person you loved went off to die in the wilderness and abandoned you. You're upset.

You're still a fucking parent. You don't get to ignore and belittle your kids because your wife sucks, because you're unhappy, because you didn't marry the person you wanted. Not to mention you're a pretty shit husband too, you give no shits about the rumors that are hurting your wife and your kids because heaven forbid you make a point to be like "Yeah no Wei Wuxian isn't my kid, my kid is the one in purple. The one with anxiety. And I wouldn't cheat on my wife." It's also the reason I get very aggravated when modern au's have JFM suddenly be a great dad because he's single. No he was a shit parent before WWX and if the reason is because he doesn't like his wife then he's a shit parent anyway. Madam Yu is more likely to be a decent mother, traditional and strict as hell, without a husband letting her name and her kids get dragged through the mud and everything her son has being put in danger because JFM can't be bothered to tell the kid he brought home that he has to follow the rules.

This doesn't even go into the stereotypes of mothers and how women are punished and hated a thousand times more than men because that's "just how men are".

I just,,, so much of the apologism is just refusing to admit that father's should be good parents. So unfortunately the more ppl try to apologize for him and insist he's secretly a good dad, the more i despise him and understand where Madam Yu is coming from. But people are welcome to make their own decisions, and at the end of the day they're both horrible parents and really should not have been allowed to be near kids as anything more than actual aunts and uncles so that the kid can go home and get a decent family dynamic

Tropes/Ships I absolutely adore I am pretty cool with any which way ships other than Wangxian go, as long as they're not in my hard no, so I don't think there's any I really adore?

BAMF Wei Wuxian: Gods I love this so much. Wei Wuxian is canonically such a badass, and fics that celebrate that are just absolute gold!

No War AU: Look, I just want Wangxian to slowly fall in love without everything going to hell. Night hunting, taking names, being adorable in love. This goes as a staple for all no golden-core transfer, no sunshot campaigns, wens aren't assholes, etc.

WWX is adored and respected: I am a huge simp for the man, so really that's not a goddamn surprise. This ties in with the no war AU, and also any AU that happen not in the canon universe.

Post-Canon Fluff: The established relationship between Wangxian is absolutely the best. Both of them are so in love with each other, going on dates, just being so fond of each other.

Rogue Cultivator WWX: Same with any fic that has him not being raised by Jiangs. I am a particular simp for BSSR raising WWX. There is also so much potential for Wangxian fluff! I don't think I have a list for tropes or ships I tolerate, I am basically good with anything not on my hard no list.

Tropes/Ships That Are Instant No's These tropes are absolute no's for me, and even if they are paired with tropes I adore, I will probably avoid them.

Twin Prides of Yunmeng: And all variations. Absolutely don't care for it. Literally, a huge red sign for me to turn away.

Any trope sympathetic to JC/YZY/JGY: I have no love for any of these characters. This means JC needs a hug, good parent YZY, Good Guy JGY etc are all tropes I avoid.

OOC WWX: Every variation of it. Weak WWX (Specifically, helpless WWX in the entire fic, not like one scene). WWX with self-esteem issues is a huge no. WWX who blames himself or drowns in guilt? Don't care for it. WWX who thinks himself unworthy of LWJ's love? Nope. Oblivious WWX? Don't want it at all.

LWJ fucks: Yeah just... no. The same goes for WWX.

JC/anyone, especially WQ: Look, if JC is shipped with WQ, LXC, NHS, WN, LJY etc, it's almost guaranteed that it's going to cast him in a good light. So I avoid them instantly.

Any fic with unnecessary angst between Wangxian is also huge no's for me.

Tropes That I do Like, But Avoid due to Popular takes on them Fics like these are ones I do like but am very picky abt their execution, so nowadays I only read ones recced by friends and people I trust.

Time Travel: Yeah so I really do like Time travel fics, but they all usually end up with tropes previously mentioned in the instant no's so... I want a settled WWX to be stuck back in time (if post canon WWX chooses to travel back in time, it's an instant no) without OOC JC or Good Parent YZY. I want LWJ to travel back in time, and fluster his husband as he does in the future. Basically, I just want Wangxian without all the annoying side characters. Ooh also, WQ and WN being alive and well!!!

DarkJi: A lot of these fics just devolve into OOC WWX, which as I have mentioned, I dislike very much. Also, I'll probably avoid manipulative LWJ who solely wants to keep WWX as his too, bcoz, for me, LWJ is thrilled to be able to be friends with WWX, and wants WWX to feel no obligation to return his feelings or be his. That being said, pls give me the canon LWJ who turned his sword against his own sect elders who sought to hurt WWX, but also left with them bcoz WWX told him to. Give me LWJ who will cut JC if he looks at his husband wrong.

BM era Fix it fics, including Yiling Wei AUs: Yeah... this one's pretty obvious if you know me. I have ranted multiple times abt this on here. But almost every fix-it is either, the sects didn't know, JC is a caring brother, the Jins are the only evil, WWX needs to be saved from himself, all of which makes me want to gauge my eyes out. Give me WWX and the Wens living as a family without JC butting in. Give me them growing as a community without the help of the sects, because they didn't help. Give me Yiling Wei Sect that stands on its own. Give me WWX living his farmer's fantasy. Give me A-Yuan growing with his family. Give me Wangxian with slow falling in love.

However, I should say that, at the end of the day, I'm a lot more concerned about the characterization than the tropes. I don't think I'd be this picky if there wasn't such prevalent fanon going around but 🤷‍♀️ It is what it is.

This is especially true abt WWX and LWJ's characterization. I am very picky about that, because there are so rare few that don't fall into fanon characterization.

When I see posts that say Jiang Yanli could do better (than JZX) my brain short circuits. Even if you like her, she got a pretty sweet deal without having to have much of anything to offer. But ooookay. 😬

Yeah, it really is like... JZX was kind and intelligent once he... for some reason fell head over heels for her. (Still doesn't make sense why, given they barely spoke beyond her breaking into his room to leave him Mystery Soup and she had not changed at all from their childhoods.) The major change in their dynamic was that he was no longer being forced to marry her, which had nothing to do with her actions. There's no mention of her ever trying to actually talk to JZX, either before or after the engagement was broken. So yeah, she got Her Man with pretty much zero effort on her part. Beyond... you know, stealing extra food from the camp in the middle of war to make treats for people. Which I guess took some effort.

Anyway, also: "JYL could do better!" Okay. Who would be better to her than JZX? Hell, who else would be interested in her? Remember that even before JZX fell for her he at least tried not to insult her (until JC and WWX were like "We know you don't want to marry our sister but how dare you not go out of your way to praise her rather than avoiding the whole matter as much as you possibly can"), and he actively disliked her at that point! Meanwhile no other male character outside her family even really talks about her, except in relation to her brothers. And then he randomly falls head-over-heels for her for no apparent reason (still not sure some form of love potion wasn't involved) and immediately starts being... okay, awkward sure, he's an awkward boi, but attentive and loving! He goes so far as to invite her "brother", who JZX hated, to the celebration of their new baby and then risks (and ultimately loses) his life trying to save him from an ambush, all because he wanted to make her happy! We never see JYL go out of her way to do things she probably didn't want to for him, which to be fair might be because they're not married long enough for that situation to come up, but it's still A Thing. Like... to make it clear we don't know enough about their married life to make any sort of judgment about what it was like, and I don't want to say she was all take and no give because I don't think that's entirely accurate, but... well, based on what little we do see of their relationship and what we see of JYL's childhood with WWX I would not be surprised to learn that JZX was putting a lot more in than JYL was, especially since JYL spent probably most of their time knowing each other feeling if not entitled to him then at least secure in the knowledge that he didn't have a choice.

So yeah, JYL got... a lot. Way more than we see her give. Sure, there might have been better husbands (or at least less awkward husbands with nicer family) out there, but JZX gave her a lot with no evidence of any sort of hesitation, and doesn't seem to have asked for anything in return! Really, what more can you ask of a spouse?

so last night while i was avoiding working on my commission, i was going off on discord and friendos were encouraging me so the swan princess (1994) AU.  gratuitous use of the shocked pikachu emoji i have access to on discord.

okay the hot xuanxian swan princess au right- so jzx and jyl are betrothed since like birth. every summer they are brought together to hopefully fall in love, and wwx and jc are with her to make sure their sister is treated right. but jzx is out here looking at wwx and then one summer, they all show up and wwx is hot now. so he breaks the engagement and tries to hit up wwx but wwx is like "lol no" and they leave for lotus pier and they get attacked and jyl and jc make it out relatively fine, but wwx be missing

idk who to make the evil wizard. wrh? he wants wwx for his sexy cultivation secrets passed down from granny bssr???? idk, but jzx is at home thinking about how he really messed up, and he doesn't think wwx would just fuckin die, if he was dead he would have been found by now. so he's off, looking for his mans

so jzx is on his way home and is like "okay so i found the love of my life and i gotta prove that i love him" and jzxun is like "gay" and jzx is like "yeah"

so jzx is telling his mom and whore dad about how he's found the person he's going to spend his life with and he needs to throw a really really big party so that everyone in the world knows. that'll show him that he loves him bf.

so everyone is showing up to this party on such short notice, jyl and jc are there. JC is like "hey my brother went missing last time i was here, why the FUCK are we here now?" and jzx is like "i need to declare my love for my future husband and i need the world to know, now everyone wait here so i can go grab him." and he goes off to grab wwx but "runs into him on the way" and he brings him in and JC and JYL are like shocked pikachu face.

so meanwhile, WWX is off in goth bird hell and he's wrecking shit in the manor and is wrecking so much shit before he dies. and wrh is like "damn what the fuck dude. your bf is throwing  a party to show off he loves you, you??" and wwx is like "okay i need to go stop that before he embarrasses both of us" and he goes off and flies directly into the party and beats the shit out of his impostor. [9:38 PM] and jzx is like "wait if you're the goth bird love of my life, then who is tiny waist ass fat over here?" and wwx honks like "really, you only want me for my sexy body?" and jc is like "hey what the fuck is happening?" and impostor wwx is like "you know what, fuck this." and dispels the disguise and walks out.

so jzx has this big goth bird, and everyone is like "hey what the fuck?" and jzx lets wwx go but hugs him and is like "i'm sorry, i was in such a rush to tell everyone how i feel about you that i almost confessed to a whole ass not you." and jyl is like "can you please explain why that person was dressed up like my brother and why he is apparently a bird now." and jzx is like "oh uh, wrh wants his sexy brain and only a declaration of true love can break the curse." and jyl is like "and you love my brother?" and jzx is like "yes" and jyl is like "okay. and what do you love about him?" and jzx is like "uh, everything? he's really smart and it's like effortless. he's kind but he doesn't take bullshit from anyone but your mom. he cares so deeply about things and i can only dream to be one of those things he loves. he's pretty yeah, but his smile is only a reflection of everything inside of him." and jc is like "gay" and BOOM. declaration of love.

and wwx is standing there and and jc and jyl hug the shit out of him and jzx is like. "oh shit i did it" and then he has this realization of "hey wwx do you uhhhh, feel the same?" and wwx is bright red and like "i mean. i've known your dumbass for a long time. i can't hate you for not being in live with my shijie even though you're clearly wrong, you know what you're about. I think,,, i could,,, i could love you back" and then they live happily ever after

About YZY leaving YMJ/JFM with her kids Post-WWX Arrival

Dear Dee, feel free to delete or ignore this or post it, whatever floats your boat. This just stuck in my head after those posts and I had to blurt it all to someone. Thanks for taking the time to read my word vomit.

So I had to do this instead of an ask because it got long and I wasn't sure how many asks it'd need or how short I could cut it down without losing parts of the argument. And then other things came up as I was writing and, well.  Well..... >_>;;;; 

But you know, after that post/ask you had about YZY fics saying 'Fuck U' to YMJ/JFM & leaving both with her kids, I had a sarcastic 'yeah right' attitude about it. Mainly due to a lot of negation emotions to such an abusive (and delusional) bitch, partly due to how she wouldn't do that since it doesn't seem to be something her sort of character would consider either because she'd think of it as 'losing' (losing what, IDK, it's why I consider her type of person crazy) or she legit wouldn't think about such a viable action.

But then later, in the shower, I seriously went 'Wait, she can't fucking do that' and it wouldn't be about how MXTX uses her as a part of the narrative but entirely about the/their culture in the novel; the actions that have and would be taken in response; and her entire toxic personality as well.

1) We already know that the sects and the cultivation world in general is sexist, elitist and so Capital T 'Traditional' to the point that it's starting to petrify and any deviancy from this is an exception rather than the norm. YZY might be a madame of a great sect (for what that's worth considering how shit of a madame she's been and the titles she's chosen for herself) but she's still a woman even with her high rank and the things she's personally accomplished.

Even if she was in her rights to leave a 'bad' marriage, she'd be the one who'd get scolded more instead of JFM by her natal family, her former husband's family and by their entire society at large even if she had a few singular supporters. Because That's Not How Things Are Done in their society and I do believe that such a thing was rare even when it was accepted method by the upper echelons. Especially since it would have to be done by more than YZY simply deciding that She Wants Out and just- goes and Gets Out. With no serious allegations that would allow her to divorce or separate from YMJ/JFM without the input from her family, JFM's family and, I think, possibly some measure of compensation as well. And no, having or bringing in a 'bastard child' is not a serious enough offence for such a humongous decision. I think something more along the lines of treason or crimes against multiple, high-ranking parties would be more along the lines. Maybe.

And even if she does this, she'd be considered 'Used Goods' (such a terrible comment) and there'd be no other good/proper marriage prospects for a divorced woman with children let alone a woman like YZY with her entire abrasive personality and attitude put off even easy-going JFM.

(If she'd been widowed then it'd be more forgiven but I consider that a Real Bad End since, IMO, it would lead to the sudden and inevitable decline of YMJ either via mass exodus of disciples and/or residents of LP; being merged with another sect due to it's unstable leadership; or create an internal political war 'cause I bet you anything that the YMJ Elders/relatives (if they have any) Would Not Want YZY in charge of YMJ when she's already proven herself such a shit betrothed let alone madame.)

2) Speaking of families, while YMJ/JFM/LP as a whole might be glad to see YZY's back, I don't think her natal sect, MSY, will be glad to see her come storming back after all the effort they put into getting that particular marriage alliance with YMJ. And if she brings her children with her? Oh man, oh boy- mother or not, that could be considered as kidnapping or line theft (is that a thing?) especially if YZY is also seriously considering divorce proceedings and raising them as Yu and not Jiang. That could give leave to, for anyone more unforgiving and maybe JFM if he's pushed enough, disown both JYL and JWY from the Jiangs through no fault of their own (though I'm sure YZY would make it so as well as blame JFM for her own decisions and mistakes).

Therefore, any inheritance or benefits they might gain for being legitimised children of a great sect are forfeited. JYL will likely lose that betrothal with JZX because JGS will drop it like a hot potato and JWY won't be a sect heir because YZY literally decided to remove that by deciding to raise JWY as a Yu, no matter their blood relation to JFM. They leave him, they leave YMJ and everything attached with it. Which is if YMJ/JFM doesn't demand MSY to give back their heir/ess and to punish YZY for her actions. Or send all three of them back for the appropriate reactions/decisions.

Their society would demand no less in reaction because, to them, it would seem like YZY had gone mad and JFM would look weak (or weaker) and imply that YMJ is vulnerable and exploitable if JFM doesn't do something in response to her actions. That's not even getting into what the other smaller sects may try to do in an attempt to curry favour with YMJ or what LLJ or QSW would try in order to destroy or diminish YMJ. And whether JFM chooses to demand his children back or not, it may not change the fact that this may give him reason enough to choose a nephew or niece to be the new sect heir especially if, even after getting rid of YZY's poisonous influence, JWY grows up to be his mother's child more than his father's or even his own person.

Either way, such a thing would bring great backlash on YZY, and MSY as well as the collateral. No one would want to give face to her or her children because it would bring up some very uncomfortable questions and scenarios to the other sects- specifically, what would happen if the female members of their clans/sets decided to follow the footsteps of YZY and leave with their children and heirs. Especially if they use it as an excuse to leave for their own comfort and whims and not some legitimate wrongs and dangers. That would create some more restrictions on women thanks to YZY

3) And lastly, if any one of those idiot YZY stans think that she'd ever give up the status of being a madame of a great sect they'd be as crazy or crazier than her. YZY is all about status and power and face. Specifically, her status, power and face and how people in her reach reflect her or 'insult' her. She is a selfish, terrible, abusive and toxic person and can only see people in regards to how they would benefit her and the elevation of her and in no other way. Especially her family. They cannot be their own person, they can only be an extension of her and gods forbid they go against her.

We can see this in how she treats the people she supposedly loves. JFM? Arguments day in, day out along with accusations and slander of cheating, having one(1) supposed 'bastard' and being 'in love' with CSSR. Which all seems sus as hell. And that's when she's actually there and not out 'night hunting'. Even her 'training' seems to border on unhelpful rather then helpful if my vague recollections of juniors fainting from exhaustion can be relied upon (please call me out if they're not or find proof).

JYL? Berated by not being 'strong' but not helped at all to be 'strong'. It doesn't help that YZY seems to believe in the same standards strength in their society- that is, of martial masculine strength which does not and should not apply to JYL who has been said to be sickly. Which means h should have been learning a different way of cultivation/fighting anyway.  If that was something she wanted and had been offered in the first place- which I doubt. That isn't even getting into her repeated generational trauma mess of a betrothal which was decided only by those 'sworn sisters', accepted by her as a way out of her terrible home life and puts her squarely within reach of JGS who we know to be a womaniser, rapist, predator and a possible ephebophile considering we don't know the exact age of his youngest 'conquest' or the age of MZY's mother when they met which could be anywhere from 14 to 21.

JWY? Gods, so much meta on him and his(non-) relationships with his parents that I don't think I can contribute more to it. It's been all said and done. Unless people want me to stir the pot by saying that, maybe, just maybe, YZY resents JWY as much as she 'loves' him.Either because he's her son and yet never manages to 'accomplish as much' as WWX or because he's a boy and therefore, more benefits and allowances than a girl/woman- more than anything that YZY ever got without either a fight or screaming at someone about. *shrug*

So, in conclusion to this sudden an unexpected essay that I wrote(I'm so sorry about that, I thought it would be shorter -.-;;;;), YZY leaving YMJ/JFM with her kids? Impossible. Not without some sort of personality transplant or a complete AU. She's too prideful, too bitter, too angry, too everything negative and little positive. She's a resentful product of the values and restraints of her society taken to the extreme negative with a willingness to inflict her pain on others to an abusive degree. But she's also too obsessed and reliant on those same values and restraints to keep up the image of her status. So her? Giving those up? You'd be more likely to see WRH as a doting grandfather than that.

Dee - All of this is true and yes YZY leaving YMJ is highly unlikely. While there will be consequences if she decides to leave, she does canonically lives separately from her husband. They seem to be in a situation where they are married but living separately, which was a common way to end a marriage (at least in spirit) back then. She essentially had all the perks of being Madam Jiang but fulfilled none of the responsibilities.

Afaik, her training the Jiang disciples is a donghua thing? I may be wrong but I recall she spent most of her time nighthunting.

As for taking her children along with her- that's completely impossible. At that point, children were the property of the father. She could leave but she would've never been allowed to take JC.

I just watched the recent donghua episode and i'm CONFUSED like weren't they supposed to go to lotus pier?? i was kinda looking forward to the ancestral hall confrontation but WHERE WAS IT??? also why did wangxian and jc seemingly arrived at the same time at the temple cuz i thought they shouldn't be... AND WHY DID JC ANG JL HUG???? i was expecting jc to push jl away but they JUST WHAT?? i was confused too about that weird underground resentful thing?? WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT ABOUT?? WAS THAT SUPPOSED TO BE NMJ?? i really dunno anymore. the donghua team really rushed it too much that it became incoherent and disorganized. they BETTER INCLUDE the part where jgy threatens jl and wwx with a guqin string and had his hand CUT OFF because of it.

Also i have to acknowledge how good jiggy was when he mocked jc and was like GASP! YOU LED THE SEIGE AND DIDN'T TRUST YOUR SHIXIONG!! 😱😖 (i watched the gif i saw on your post and i can't help but CACKLE) But there were some parts where his acting was a bit off?? His facial expressions don't match his tone imo.

It's really funny because I was so happy this episode was finally here. Not bc I like the donghua but because I've been dreading how it would cover the ancestral hall/core reveal when it's tried very hard to soften jc in the past and that's one of the moments he's at his most loathsome canonically-which is why the core reveal comes down on his head so beautifully and strikes so hard. Well joke's on me because we have to wait another week... I don't like to talk about things before I have all the facts(or all the episodes) but moving the core reveal scene has to be one of the most batshit crazy things this adaptation has done so far. It's still gonna have to be shown. It's still going to take time? How does any of it make sense. *sigh* Only good parts were leaving the blood pool/Wens scene in and yes, as you said JGY semi roasting jc ...but not getting to drag him about the core because it now hasn't been revealed yet. And yeah what tremors creature, mole man is digging his way underground toward the temple? Just so many questions. Considering the way cql had Wei Wuxian gently caress wzc's soggy face, I really thought my expectations were as low as they could go but joke's on me. Touché donghua team.
