So I have finished MDZS book one and I want to highlight some iconic moments, in no particular order

- "Wei Wuqian" way to call a man broke in front of his crush

Hot Take Time #2309209 (edit: actually this isn't a hot take it's lukewarm at best. it's a room temperature take) but I really don't understand the argument "mo dao and gui dao are different and therefore everything WWX does is completely fine!"

Like, yes, it's a difference that plays into the public discourse vs. real truth themes of the novel to a degree, and I of course absolutely appreciate all the explanations and meta around the nuances and differences. But like. What he actually does with it is... still not good whether it's mo dao or gui dao? And there are many very significant reasons that gui dao is still not great? (Which I won't get into here because there are other people far more qualified with cultural/genre knowledge who have written about it way better than I ever could anyway)

Like y'know. The several hundred people he tortured to death, the thousands of desecrated graves, the mini-harem of pet zombie girls he kept after the war for purely entertainment purposes...? Like, those behaviors aren't inherent to the method (well, except the method sort of uniquely facilitating the keeping of pet ghosts), but they're not... good...? (Note: 'morally good' is completely different than 'fun & sexy, having a great time torture-bonding with shidi, etc'.)

I just cannot agree that keeping a little harem of pet ghost girls nor anything that happened with the Wens is being "gentle with the dead, empathetic and respectful". Even WWX thinks his past self was kinda cringe with it and went way too far!

I do think there's meant to be a significant amount of ambiguity about what elements of his downward spiral are caused by the corrosive nature of his method vs. the trauma of the Burial Mounds and his own, internal, homebrewed mental crisis. The alcoholism, rapidly shifting moods, anger and inability to control his temper, before and after the war. How much of it is Wei Wuxian and how much of it is the impact of the resentful energy he's using, and the use/proximity of the Yin Hu Fu?

I do think there's a reason why there's just as much brutality carried out by characters using orthodox cultivation methods. But in the end, his behavior was a problem, and the novel hints that the methods were impacting his mental state, and it was overlooked because of his usefulness to the war effort, but it did significantly damage his credibility leading up to the parts where he is in the right, which is also part of the point of the story. Anyway this book is a lot more fun to me when you approach it from 'look what absolutely insane things these boys will do when they go absolutely feral for each other, it's so cool' with a side of 'look how fucked up he is now, that's hot' and not, like, trying to somehow figure out how to make pet ghost girls into a moral ideal.

So much of the story, for me, is about what desperate, wild lengths a person will go to for survival and revenge when pushed, and then what do you do after? When the danger is past and the revenge is done, what then? How do you come back from that?

They're at some sort of a social event of the clans that takes place on a ship, definitely not lwj's wedding though since he wasn't engaged to mm in the first place (much to lqr's irritation.)

Jgy has been getting close to lxc in hopes of potentially advancing his status through marrying into the Lan clan because his future at Jin clan is seeming pretty dim at the moment. Whether he has actual feelings for lxc is up to you. There's only one problem, that being lwj who seems to know he's up to something and needs to be dealt with. Though the younger of the twin jades isn't known for either drinking or partying hard, quite the opposite, him drinking alcohol by mistake and stumbling over the edge is believable enough. The Lans aren't known for their high tolerance after all.

What jgy hasn't accounted for is that now there's someone practically glued to lwj's side. He waits for the right moment that just doesn't come, so he just decides to go for it. He can be subtle, distracting them with small talk (that is frustratingly hard when lwj only gives one word answers and his friend only communicates with sign language he doesn't understand,) but wwx ends up catching him slip the drug into lwj's drink anyway. He sees red and in a fit of protective rage he attacks jgy, slipping back into his original form.

The humans are horrified and nmj hauls wwx off jgy. (Ironic I know, but he hates the "seamonsters" more than he hates jgy.) Wwx slams into the railing of the deck and curls up in pain before lwj rushes to him. Wwx had not revealed his true form to lwj in fear of him seeing him as a "monster" and loosing him. As they stare at each other in other in horror (wwx bc his secret is out and Lan Zhan must hate him now and lwj because he is reeling from how is he going to protect Wei Ying in a situation like this) lxc comes to try and pull him back from the dangerous creature that's been hiding under their noses for weeks.

This is as far as I've drawn so far but there'll probably be more to come later!

Sometimes I remember that the Nie Brothers are from the Hebei province because that's where Qinghe is and then I think again about the most common and generally preferred alcohols in Northeastern China.

I am then immediately clocked in the face by this fact from Wikipedia's entry on gaoliang (a type of very popular baijiu from the area):

Lan Wangji-The Untamed / Mo Dao Zu Shi

He's an absolute badass - in a series full of morally ambiguous or outright immoral characters, he's one of the only people around to consistently show he's reliable, honorable and strong. Some examples include Lan Wangji defending Wei Wuxian, his love interest and eventual husband, against his own clan and other clans because WWX went against their rules and tried to save innocent people, or LWJ raising WWX's adopted son for years and being a great father and mentor to him. While LWJ isn't *technically* canonically autistic, (not that this word would exist in the setting), he has flat affect, fixates on rules and his difficulty in understanding people's emotions is explicitly brought up and a minor plot point.

The hardest part of the adoption process was supposed to be endless paperwork and screenings and the anxiety of not being good enough to meet high standards of the court.

It wasn't supposed to be A-Yuan's first doctors appointment.

His pitiful screams fill the small doctor's office. He's clinging to Lan Wangji's shoulders like there a lifeline, hiding and all LWJ wants to do is bundle up his son and carry him back to safety.

But these are mandatory vaccines he needs in order to attend pre-k. So he cant.

Nurse: Shots are never fun at this age, huh He would beg to differ; they're never fun at any age But see lwj isnt afraid of the shots themselves. Hes terrified of the sight of blood. His BFF loves horror movies & he watches them with her bravely by staring at the corner of the tv

When lwj gets his blood drawn, he looks closes his eyes and imagines being in a cold pond somewhere. But he's never been afraid of just the shot before.

He's helpless in the face of his son's distress. The nurse sighs, saying theyll have to try again another day.

A-Yuan sniffles into his baba's shirt, exhausted from the crying fit. His eyes are still watery and he looks around the room with such fear in his eyes, before withdrawing back into the safety of his baba's chest.

Lan Wangji has no idea what to do, only cradles him closer

Thankfully, LWJ has someone who can help. His best friend, Jiang Yanli is a child therapist and has been helping him prepare his home for A-Yuan.

JYL: Zhanzhan, have you tried showing him its not scary?

LWJ has not, bc he's terrified

JYL is the only one allowed to call him Zhanzhan. In Uni she was the one who mentored him his first week of school. Someone slipped him alcohol and he got deliriously drunk.

Yanli-jie was the one who found him and took him home. This is what they told the cohort but actually…

JYL: seeing his Baba get a shot and be okay might motivate him to be more brave

LWJ certainly doesn't feel brave. He's thinking of the blood flowing from his veins and then LEAVING them to go who knows where. It sounds barbaric

He has the distinct memory of learning what a period is in middle school and promptly passing out

He is not a fan of anything related to blood

But LWJ has learned that Yanli-jie knows what she's doing, so, despite the way he can swear he feels his blood pumping with fear, he agrees...but there's a problem.

LWJ: I am up to date on all my shots. How can I show him it is safe?

JYL: Hmm....I have an idea. My brother is a phlebotomist! He can help.

LWJ is confused. Last he heard, the younger Jiang is a prosecutor who makes a living viciously yelling in a courtroom.

JYL: Not him, Zhanzhan. My adoptive brother, A-Xian. I bet he would be happy to help you. He works at the blood bank at Yiling Clinic! The perfect exposure!

For who?, LWJ wonders. A blood bank sounds like a house of horrors to him. And a person who chooses to stick a needle in people and remove the very force that gives them life? He cannot imagine getting along with this person at all.

Yiling Clinic is a community clinic in a part of town Lan Wangji has never been to, especially since the Gusu Group has their own private hospital.

But this is where Yanli-jie's phlebotomist little brother works.

A-Yuan clings to the back of his legs as they approach the receptionist, a young man with amazing cat eye makeup named Mo Xuanyu

These two definitely do not fit the bill for their usual patients, with their designer clothing, so he asks with some skepticism: Um, can I help you?

LWJ has spent the last two hours siking himself up for the blood part, he isn't prepared at all for social interactions. He flounders like a fish.

LWJ: …I am…We are here for…

A shout comes from behind them: Ah! A-Yu, is that A-jie's friend? Zhanzhan?

LWJ flinches until he sees a man sprinting towards them. The 1st thing he notices is this man is wearing lilac scrubs with little white rabbits on them.

The 2nd thing he notices is this man has the most enchanting smile he's ever seen. Already, LWJ feels more relaxed.

The man winks at him: You like the scrubs? A-jie said A-Yuan liked bunnies, I figured this would help keep him calm.

LWJ does not blurt I like bunnies too. But only just.

Beside the man is a pediatric nurse named Wen Ning, no relation, who says he's here to help with A-Yuan

Yanli-jie's little brother, the phlebotomist, introduces himself: Ah! Sorry, Lan Zhan. Jiejie always calls you that so it just stuck. I'm Wei Wuxian. You can call me Wei Ying if you wanna make it even.

Strangely, LWJ feels no need to correct him: Lan Zhan is fine, Wei Ying.

WWX smiles so brightly, LWJ feels dizzy with it.

WWX: Now where's the little bunny himself?

A-Yuan has been clinging behind LWJ's pant leg, tilting around just enough to peek with one eye at this strange gege.

WWX: Maybe not a rabbit then, a radish who likes to hide away!

A-Yuan becomes offended: I don't like radishes!

WWX laughs: Me neither! But Qing-jie says they help us grow big and strong, so they can't be all that bad huh?

WWX is crouched in front of A-Yuan, draping both arms across his knees and resting his chin in one hand. He waits.

LWJ admires his patience. The longer WWX waits, crouched and rocking back and forth in front of A-Yuan, smile gently and welcoming, the more A-Yuan's natural curiosity gets the better of him.

Eventually, his son comes out from behind his leg to touch a black bunny on his sleeve

A-Yuan: I like this one. We only have a white bunny at home.

WWX: I like the black bunny too! What's your bunny's name?

A-Yuan: Banana, bc she tries to eat Baba's banana every morning, and you are what you eat.

He recites this with all the solemnity a 4 yo could possess

WWX's laughter echoes through the lobby: Well! You're very right, A-Yuan. Maybe you aren't a radish after all then. Tell me, what do little boys eat?

A-Yuan: I'm not little! I'm 4 and a half!

WWX: Right, right, I sincerely apologize for my mistake. What do big boys eat then?

A-Yuan purses his lips and taps his chin, pondering his question carefully: Hmm… jelly beans?

WWX looks like he wants to laugh more, but instead says: I see, I see. Thank you for your wisdom A-Yuan.

He looks up at LWJ, dark eyes dancing. LWJ's heart rabbits against his chest

WWX: If your baba is ready, we can head down to my cave if you'd like. I have a lot of cool machines I'd love to show you.

A-Yuan's eyes widen into saucers as he gasps: A cave? Wowww

They grin conspiratorially at each other, before turning bright eyes up at LWJ

LWJ feels warm and much more relaxed inside, so he nods: Mn. We may go.

A-Yuan cheers and holds WWX's hand as the head downstairs.

LWJ trails behind making small talk with WN, watching WWX and A-Yuan swing their hands and skip ahead, feeling something warm blossom in his chest.

The hallway to Wei Wuxian's lab isn't anything like Lan Wangji expects.

The rooms at Gusu are all perfectly pristine and sterile, painted white to promote serenity, rest, and healing.

For one thing, he'd raided a Halloween store at some point and hung up all sorts of decorations, mostly vampire themed. There's one that's says "I vant to suck your blood!" except suck is crossed out and replaced with "donate". Wwx and A-yuan giggle together at wwx's fake accent

It's definitely not up to Gusu General's strict standards. For one thing, there're beanbag chairs in the hall outside. Wwx says it's to feel more comfy while others wait, as he's the only phlebotomist on staff and it can take a while. A-Yuan personally tests each one.

His lab is…adequate if far too small. There's a desk that's overrun with stacks of papers and textbooks and a shelf that's filled with even more. The actual space where blood is drawn is, thankfully, sterile and clean. Though he's decorated with demons demanding blood for food

There's a temp controlled room where the blood is stored, with a red door and the words "Blood Pool" written in menacing barely legible font

Despite the…interesting decor, the room is homely and, surprisingly, welcoming. A-Yuan at least is having a very fun time getting a tour

Wwx patiently answers all of A-Yuan’s questions, even the endless why's, with utmost sincerity, even when his answers are purely nonsense.

Lwj can't stop the fond smile from lifting the corner of his lips. A-Yuan had never warmed up to a medical professional so fast.

He's pulled from his musings when A-Yuan grabs his sleeve: Baba! Blood-gege says this machine makes blood spin around!

Wwx burst out laughing: Blood-gege? I love it!

Lwj is enchanted, head repeating those last 3 words again and again as wwx fondly ruffles A-Yuan's fluffy hair

Wwx: alright, now that you're familiar with my beauty Chenqing (referring to his bloody spinny machine lwj does not want to think about), shall we get down to business?

He says this with his bright dark eyes glittering at LWJ. Right. The blood donating part.

Lwj gulps, nodding. A prisoner walking up to the gallows.

You know thinking about it ... While Lan Wangji definitely broke a lot of rules for Wei Ying. (If not all)

I think Lan Xichen was just as bad. However, instead of breaking rules, he found ways to get around them.

Like this man was constantly fanning the flames for Wangji's crush, had a way to drink alcohol but wipe it using his core so technically he wouldn't be breaking any rules since he didn't get drunk.

I know he loved the drama and would casually eavesdrop on the gossip. His reaction to Wei Wuxian was mostly amusement because - Wangji really got the crush on that little fireball, very cute I need him as a brother in law stat.

He just needs to be asked but yes he would very much be willing to tread the lines or help someone get around the Lan rules altogether. (See that one chibi drama where he gets drunk with Wangji because Wangji missed wwx too much)

But yeah just thinking of Lan Xichen who seems perfect constantly running along the lines of rule breaker territory but never getting caught cause he simply perfected the art.

Also the shameless flirting with Meng Yao using the fingers???? That man has his ways. I just know it.

He isn't just a sweet Er-ge. (He is very nice tho i love him)

This man convinced NMJ and JGY into a poly relationship with himself when they hated each other's guts.

He can do anything. He has mastered the system of getting his way without hurting anyone else.

He is everything an oldest child wants to be. ( I wish I was half as good as him)

for your avatar mdzs au………have you thought at all about how lwj and wwx meet? Does wwx die and return as a different bender or is there no war between the sect families in this au? I’m just so curious about what scenes/plot ideas you have for this au it is so cool!!!! ^-^

I haven't really expanded on the details of the plot just yet; but I'm always happy to explore possibilities. I've imagined Lwj's and wwx's meeting to be similar to canon: The yunmeng benders visit the northern water tribe to train & study, this time with wwx acting as jc's bodyguard (as he isn't a waterbender).

Now here's when I'm still deciding: I'd like to have it kept on the DL (as in: strictly contained to the yunmeng tribe) that wwx is an airbender; so while the kids are studying in Gusu wwx has to hide his bending. He's posing as jc and jyl´s bodyguard and uses the opportunity to visit the northern water tribe and learn some bending theory/ history + benefit from the library!

However, as we all know, wwx is a gremlin and uses subtle airbending to prank poor unsuspecting gusu lan disciples & elders. He also still sneaks alcohol into the cloud recesses; and does so by using his bending to jump the gigantic ice wall surrounding the place. Lwj catches the annoying little shit who's spent the length of his stay playing pranks on him and his shufu, and reports his ass. He doesn't expose him as an airbender, though.

Over the course of his punishment, wwx wheedles and taunts lwj into practicing with him in secret, using the fact that lwj has never had the occasion to face an airbender in combat before. Dueling between glaciers behind gusu ensues. The rest of the cloud recesses arc pretty much follows canon after that!

I think that if there was a sect war, wwx would reinvent spirit bending to manipulate vengeful spirits. Maybe also energy bending. I'd have to think about it some more.

If wwx died as a result of this war and his bending methods and the ensuing chaos, he'd most likely come back as an earthbender, since mxy is technically a Jin & therefore from the earth kingdom. Wwx would probably have some trouble learning to control his new bending due to it being the opposite of airbending; he might eventually take to sandbending or metalbending though. He is a crafty king after all.

That's really all I can tell you for now! As I develop the AU, I'll draw more scenes & characters. Anyone can also feel free to drop some suggestions into my asks or comment any ideas!

There is a saying in my country that's roughly translated as "either the ball [as in, the prom/banquet], or the hospital", and it means taking the leap no matter the risks because everything could either go terribly wrong or terribly right. It's an elegant way of saying "fuck it" before doing a high risk activity.

This prompt made me think of that.

Wei Wuxian likes risks. He likes the thrill of it, and the fact that, most often, he gets the reward that's made him take the risk in the first place. Whether it's a dare or an idea he wants to see if he can put into practice, he doesn't shy away from anything.

However, there are times when the risks he takes aren't necessarily calculated, and land him in trouble - nothing major, most often with getting yelled at by Madam Yu and having to replace whatever he broke or damaged using his own money... but this time, it's a bit more... difficult to do that.

Because Wei Wuxian won a bet he made with Jin Zixun just to shut him up - but now, Wei Wuxian is feeling like he's going to die. Or puke his guts and his soul out.

The bet was about Wei Wuxian being able to take 10 flutes of champagne at once. They're at this afterparty of some high class gala of the four great families, and since the parents and the uncles have retired for the night already, the younger generation has been left to have fun freely, without any formalities. It was uncle Jiang's idea, bless him, but Wei Wuxian kind of wishes it hadn't been.

Cause even with his massive alcohol tolerance, he's pretty sure he's well on his way towards alcohol poisoning.

"Huaisang, I think we need to call an ambulance..."

"An am- Wei-xiong, are you dying?!"

Wei Wuxian rolls his eyes. "I will if you don't call the ambulance. Just tell them what happened and to send in someone quick. I don't know, a doctor, a nurse, a priest..."

"Serves you right for getting into it with Jin Zixun." Jiang Cheng says, handing Wei Wuxian another glass of water. "You'd sooner die than mind your business."

"I'm really not in the mood for any of your lectures right now. Yell at me when I feel better. Or when I die."

Wei Wuxian closes his eyes and decides to try and at least get himself in a stable state of mind. Last thing he needs is to panic, so he tries to take in deep breaths and ignore the nausea and the impending sense of doom he's feeling.

He knows he's going to have to pay his own hospital bills, and he's going to also have to do Nie Huaisang's homework for months to cover the cost of the ambulance ride (which he has been generous enough to offer to cover), but at least he won't be dead. He'll wish he was when Madam Yu finds out about this, but that's a given.

If she ends up kicking Wei Wuxian out this time, like she threatened she would if he got into trouble again, he'll have to figure out how to make himself useful enough to convince one of his friends to take him in. He's pretty good in the kitchen and he can do a decent job cleaning, so maybe he could be their live-in maid or something... Well, didn't Madam Yu say he'll end up just like his father?

The sound of the ambulance alarm pulls him out of his thoughts. Right, the hospital. He almost forgot about it, which isn't necessarily a good sign of his mental state right now.

"Wangji-xiong, he's right there, I think he's almost passed out and I really don't know-"

Wangji-xiong? Oh, right, Lan Zhan is working the night shift as an EMT tonight, that's why he couldn't come to the gala... What a coincidence...

Wei Wuxian feels himself gently lifted in a pair of very strong arms, and he makes the herculean effort to open his eyes. "Lan... Zhan...?"

"I am here. You'll be okay."

"Mm... if you'll take care of me, I will..."

Lan Wangji tells Jiang Cheng something but Wei Wuxian doesn't really hear it. He's focused on trying not to throw up on his crush, who's so strong and smells so good and is holding him like a bride, and maybe it's the alcohol but Wei Wuxian really wants to kiss him, but...

"Lan Zhan..."

"Mn?"

"I like you..."

"I like you too, Wei Ying."

"No, like you as in I want you to be my boyfriend."

"Ask me again when you're sober."

"Will you say yes?"

"I will."

"Lan Zhan?"

"Mn?"

"I think I'm about to throw up."

Been thinking about the beginning of MDZS because I was talking about it with a friend who just finished vol. 1, and I really love the placing of the CR flashback right after LWJ and JC's introduction and all the questions and context it brings. 

First we get introduced to both LWJ (properly at least) and JC in Dafan, and that segment as well as wangxian’s arrival to CR sets the tone for their current relationships with WWX. 

One is slightly confusing, because WWX has already ran from LWJ once, which implies that he expects a certain hostility from him that isn't there, made even more puzzling when he allows himself to be taken to CR with little resistance, and proceeds to annoy him the best he can to see what will come of it.

While the other is outright hostile, surprising WWX who had actually thought that JC would have forgotten his grievances by now, but leaving little to the reader to question.

"Unfortunately, the person who came happened to be from the Lan Clan, but even more unfortunately, he happened to be Lan WangJi! This was one of the people who had fought with him before, so he should retreat quickly. " (chapter 5)

"He thought that, after so many years, no matter how much hatred Jiang Cheng had held for him, it would have disappeared long ago. He didn’t expect that not only did it not disappear, it became richer, as if it was a jar of aged alcohol. To the point where at the present time, his hatred had grown to affect even people who cultivated like him!" (chapter 7)

Then our first flashback shows us that there is a lot more happening here. 

We learn that Lan Wangji used to be far less composed than he is now, getting flustered by WWX’s antics quite easily. But their relationship wasn’t really bad, just a little messy as they stumbled through navigating their teenage crushes. We’re left to wonder what went on in the future that WWX first called him an enemy, but it also shows us that what's happening between them now isn’t so strange. 

WWX’s shenanigans in Cloud Recesses are in line with the things he did as a teen, the only difference is that LWJ is responding in kind now and WWX is not really up to speed with this quite yet. 

There’s also the tangible impact WWX has had in LWJ's current life (the bunnies, the emperors smile) that speaks for itself about what kinds of feelings he’s held for WWX during these years.

(It’s not that much of a surprise since LWJ is the romantic lead after all, but it is very well crafted and I love the attention to detail there and how every little thing is connected and helps build up the narrative while WWX is busy trying to mislead us about his feelings)

Meanwhile Wei Wuxian’s thoughts on Jiang Cheng gain a new context when we learn that he hasn’t always hated WWX. 

That’s not a surprise exactly, considering how much WWX thinks about them and the past in Dafan, but it does invite us to question how it got there, and shows how the worst we’ve seen of JC can already be found in his younger else, while tragically also making you empathize with him after seeing through these glimpses that he had the potential to be much better had he not chosen to hold onto his bitterness.

JC and WWX’s friendship wasn’t perfect, but it had potential. Except we already know it went nowhere, just not how exactly that happened.

It’s just!! So good! Love that as early as this and in the most light hearted flashback we can already determine how LWJ was always on WWX’s side despite WWX’s previous lack of knowledge of this, get hints of what role JC could have played on WWX’s downfall given that even as a teen he was quick to jealousy and to put him down, then there’s wangxian and how both their feelings have been present since back then too. 

I haven’t had to think about all the initial mystery surrounding WWX in a bit since I already know the entire story, but I had fun seeing it through someone else’s eyes and it reminded me of how good the build up on that is and how much fun it is to pick apart the beginning. It’s a beginning that does a really good job of leaving us curious about what happened during WWX’s first life for his relationships to have gotten like this and it establishes a lot of things that’ll be solidified later when we get to the relevant flashbacks.

I just recommended a fic I do like but I remember the jc writing being kind of annoying in the sense that the author was like 'haha wwx is SO irresponsible, jc is the sensible one and besties with wq and they both think wwx is annoying!' which is is so fucking annoying and disrespectful of wwx because when has that EVER happened in canon like wwx will ocassionally have fun or goof off but not when it's something serious! he demonstrates very sound judgement when it comes to things that actually matter (which jyl said!!! she knew!!!!) and jc being frustrated that wwx is doing something he doesn't understand usually means that he's being left in the dark, not that he has better judgement or is more sensible than wwx

the CR arrival? yeah he wandered off to get jyl a present but did it really matter. yeah he tried to sneak alcohol in but he went back alone and retrieved the entry passes himself, snd jc also indulged in the alcohol and porn parties so its not like he can judge. the time he snuck off to join lwj on his quest? yeah he didn't tell anyone but he knew what lwj was doing and he knew he needed help and that it was important. spending all his time drinking post-ss? he wasn't being stupid, he was coping with trauma and suddenly not having a purpose anymore. he KNEW what jc wanted from him but he wasn't able to give it. and the fucking wens? people act like jc was 'just doing the smart thing' when it came to the wens but wwx KNEW what he was doing was dangerous and couldn't end well, he was simply making a MORAL decision rather than a political one

the sole example was wwx mocking jl without knowing about his mom which was a serious error on his part and when one of his genuine flaws of EMOTIONAL carelessness comes through, but to his credit he immediately corrected his behavior afterwards. and it really was bad luck THAT was the kid who trapped him. and it's not like jc has any leg to stand on when criticizing his emotional sensitivity to others

and postcanon he's trying to hunt down a cursed sword/solve a mystery like he does do silly things occasionally but he's got like. a purpose and all which he does stick tonwhen he needs to. but also there isn't anything wrong with him just enjoying his life in either of his two lifetimes. like damn jc....why do you hate fun...etc.

like jc doesn't necessarily always make bad decisions, but he is very often working with incomplete information (often bc wwx is intentionally misleading him!) and he never pauses to consider he may not be the best person to make these decisions, but people take his contempt for others and his confidence fully at face value when they really shouldn't. in canon his attitude of 'ugh I'm the only serious one who cares about doing things right and wwx is just a disaster who slacks off all the time' is demonstrably untrue as was proven time and again within the text as a brilliant, compassionate, driven, well-informed, pragmatic, canny, circumspect, untruthful, protective, and morally driven wwx emerges distinct from the careless, out-of-control disaster idiot slacker that jc often treats him as. and like. that fucking matters

edit: of course there's ALSO the theme of jc wanting wwx to sit down and shut up and stop making trouble while wwx is a deeply morally driven anti-authoritarian character who can and does defy jc and other leadership he's supposedly meant to defer to when he feels he has a moral comittment he must honor. the narrative recognizes that wwx's decisions aren't always right, and he does make mistakes, but those mistakes were not 'trying to do the right thing even though jc said it was stupid and pointless' (i.e. offering to help lwj during the indoctrination camp, saving jzx's life in the cave, defecting to pay their joint debt to the wens) and the fact that people genuinely think they are is like. did you understand the story bud. like jc being mad that wwx saved lwj and jzx and thus apparently brought down the wrath of the wens onto LP makes sense to HIM but saving two heirs was the correct political and moral decision and from an objective standpoint they both KNEW the wens were coming for them. if anything jc's judgement is the one that's usually impaired because it's so often clouded by his uncontrollable and tempestuous emotional state. wwx walking his single-plank bridge is an intentional decision he makes with full knowledge of the risk, and it's one that's ultimately proven to be righteous despite the regrets it brings him and the losses he incurs

what happened after they disbanded: nie-die died, leaving two kids, at first they thought it was suicide, but after deep investigation, they found out it was wen ruohan's fault, so he was send to jail, because of that, the public got to know that the group was actually very afraid of him and never got along very well, and his the reason why qingheng-jun went into hiatus way before their disband and was the first to give up idol life (he was also the first one to marry, to the hate of his fans); also, another factor for their disband was jin guangshan's....... whoreness

cangse sanren was an solo idol, very successful, with the guidance of legendary singer baoshan sanren

yu ziyuan was part of small, almost unknown, girl group, jfm's fans also hate her very much (they used to ship him with cssr before she married his bff from school and indie singer, wei changze, they ended up being the couple's fans)

lan wangji is songwriter and compositor, he helped his brother when he debuted and kept supporting him when his group disbanded and lxc decided to change careers and be an actor now. lwj's songs are almost always a huge success, he even got some awards on his shelf

lan qiren never went into entertainment industry, deciding early on to be a teacher, ironically, he's the boy's teacher and has to talk to all these celebrities about their kid's grades and behavior, he hates it, especially when 1/3 of his class doesn't show up for weeks because of schedule. it's their final year! it should be a crime! ilegal! bad parents and worse managers! he has a deep respect for wangxian for their choices, surprisingly (they have something in common: a need for privacy and anonymity)

jiang cheng redebuted on another group, but it didn't last and wasn't successful, he tried solo career, like jzx, but he soon gave up idol life and went to create his own independent label (he only debuted because his parents wanted, and his mother insisted too much, it wasn't his choice)

nie mingjue also changed careers and became a very successful actor, like lxc, though he often complains about always being a cast as villain or mafia

wwx and lwj meet at school, when wwx was trying to get a bag of alcohol inside the school grounds, they fight a lot at the beginning but before new years break, they were already friends and by their last year - pining like idiots

Everyone in mdzs plays an important role for the plot. Anyway, it seems to me that we know very little about most of the cast and what we know is filtered by the narrator's prospective or is narrated trough rumors. Now I am thinking about the Nie Brothers and in particular about Nie Mingjue. He is the fierce corpe whose mystery drives a huge part of the plot. But, what we know about Nie Mingjue? (disclaimer : these are English translations so a lot is lost from the original text. And these are only my opinions about this character based on some passage)

Someone can suggest this passage to figure nmj out:

As such, the ability to discern people's desires was truly Jin Guangyao's forte. The only person he could never seem to pry any useful information out of was Nie Mingjue.

Wei Wuxian had seen this firsthand, back when Meng Yao had worked under Nie Mingjue's command. I think that this passage says less about nmj and more about wwx. (I personally think, but maybe I am wrong, that the second passage is from wwx's pov, so I am thinking according to that)

Not even considering that this knowledge comes from wartime, where people, and in particular sect leaders, have to fight against their enemies, I am inclined to interpret this passage in two ways:

Wwx is judging nmj based on what he thinks ordinary sect leaders like best

Wwx is judging nmj based on what he likes best

I don't know what one of them is more appropriate but, again, for me this passage doesn't give any insight on nmj.

In fact I find more interesting this passage:

"... I apologize to all of the Sect Leaders. Everyone, I am afraid you don't know that the Wen Cultivator whom Wei Wuxuan wanted to save was called Wen Ning. We owe him and his sister Wen Qing gratitude for what happened during the Sunshot Campaign"

Nie Mingjue, "You owe them gratitude? Isn't the QishanWen the ones who caused the YunmengJiang Sect's annihilation?"

[...]

Lan Xichen responded a moment later, "I have heard of Wen Qing's name a few of times. I don't remember her having participated in any of the Sunshot Campaign's crimes"

Nie Mingjue, "But she's never stopped them either"

Lan Xichen, "Wen Qing was one of Wen RuoHuan's most trusted people. How could she have stopped them?"

Nie Mingjue spoke coldly, "If she responded with only silence and not opposition when the Wen Sect was causing mayhem, it's the same as indifference. She shouldn't been so disillusioned as to hope that she could be treated with respect when the Wen Sect was doing evil and be unwilling to suffer the consequences and pay the price when the Wen Sect was wiped out"

Lan Xichen knew that because of what happened to his father, Nie Mingjue abhorred Wen dogs more than anything, especially with how intolerable he was toward evil. Lan Xichen didn't say anything else.

Chapter 73

They are discussing about what to do with wwx who has killed jin and other's sects cultivators and has rescued the wen captives.

When jc tries to defend wwx, saying that them owe the wen siblings, nmj immediately intervenes remembering him about what the wen have done to his sect, asking what kind of gratitude they could ever have.

Then, when lxc tries to defend wq, nmj intervenes again saying that she has to take responsibility for her actions. Her silence is indifference, so, why shouldn't she have to suffer the consequences of the Sect she benefits from?

All of this, in my opinions, suggests that nmj is an extremely idealistic person. That doesn't mean that he has a black/white view of the world, only that he has strong principles for which he is ready to fight, even trying to impose himself.

That doesn't make him bad or good. He believes he is right but he respects people who fight for their principles even if these same ideals are opposed to his own.

Nie Mingjue, "The woman has much more backbone than the mob of her sect"

Nmj is talking about MianMian, someone who has tried to speak for wwx. She is mocked for that by other cultivators, because she is a servant woman, because her voice isn't important enough. MianMian stands for her own opinions but understanding that other people aren't really open minded towards dialogue, ("Fine! Your voice are louder! Fine! You are the rational ones!" that's what she says) she leaves her sect. A servant girl, now disciple, is leaving one of the four great sect, after standing her ground! Nmj shows admiration for her, despite she is in his opposite side, saying that she has more backbone than the mob (people who are mocking her but are on nmj's side).

In my view, Nmj has strong principles that he would try to impose but not mocking and demeaning his opponents, who he genuinely can admire.

Plus:

Lan Xichen knew that because of what happened to his father, Nie Mingjue abhorred Wen dogs more than anything, especially with how intolerable he was toward evil.

Nmj is intolerable toward evil, but in this one, my guess is that his past trauma also plays a huge role. Nmj watched in horror as his father's saber broke battling a beast, which then gored him with its horn. He was forced to see his only still alive parental figure being killed indirectly by wrh's hand (wrh has sabotaged his father's saber), and then he was forced to become a young sect leader. The age isn't clear, but he was a teenager. Anyway, I think his trauma plays a huge role on his decisions and that, again, doesn't make him good or bad. We are in a world where people are ready to take their revenge taking down also innocent people: nhs is ready to put in danger innocent Junior's life to take his revenge, wwx kills at least one hundred innocent disciples who are at the siege because it's their role as disciples, because he is emotionally destroyed by his sister's death.

But I am cautious about this last passage because it's from lxc's pov. It's not nmj who says that his past trauma and his principles are driving his decisions, but it's lxc. Maybe this passage says more about lxc who, understanding his friend's motivation, backs off. Ugh.

Anyway, in my view, Nie Mingjue is a man who suffered a lot, who was forced to take huge responsibilities at a young age. He admires other people who fight for their ideals and thinks that everyone has to take responsibility for their own actions.
