#writing an essay that will never be graded

Excuse me, my ZoLu brainworm has not left chapter 1136. And I wrote 1,500 words today, after a long month of unable to write anything, so I deserve to have this rant, dammit!
Ahem. Buckle in. It’s a long one. (Sorry not sorry)
Y’all, look at our precious idiot, scaring giants right out the gate with his bloodlust. Missing one eye, hair standing up like a demon, dressed to the nines like a rogue Viking, drinking some high-grade giant liquor without getting drunk — just living the outlaw life. This is the wild beast of the Straw Hat Pirates. He’s unpredictable. He’ll strike fear into your soul. He cannot be tamed.
Oh, wait, did someone say “Sun God”? Now he’s intrigued. That sounds familiar. The bloodlust is gone. He ain’t here to scare anyone. He’s just gonna sit still and listen like a good boy for the next five pages. Please. Tell him more…
Don’t mind the swordsman. He’s just drinking quietly in his corner, listening to the chatter, saying nothing for FIVE WHOLE PAGES. He’s a bit of a loner, after all. He’s too cool to participate in these antics. Too cool for school (probably never had a geography lesson in his life). Too cool to care.
Except.. did they say “Shanks”? Did Luffy hear them say “Shanks”? THE Shanks?! The man Luffy has idolized his entire life. The one name that can make Luffy’s eyes glow simply from hearing it being spoken. Shanks might have been here recently?
Oh, you bet our green-haired guard dog is sitting up and paying attention. And he’s got OPINIONS.
This page… ZoLu truthers can (and should) write entire essays on this page. These are just my immediate thoughts.
First, I gotta know. Did Zoro drag Luffy away from the party? Did they sneak away together after sharing a knowing glance? Did Luffy run off to make water and Zoro took the chance to corner him for this discussion?
Regardless of how, they’re alone now, and Zoro is doing his first mate thing, having clocked his captain’s unusual behavior, which of course has him concerned. He can’t let some random giant take advantage of his trusting and naive captain.
He’s gotta play the devil’s advocate, gotta present a different perspective on the matter even if it means popping Luffy’s bubble. What I want to know is, does the Japanese version have the exclamation marks?!? That’s three sentences in a row punctuated with exclamation marks. Stephen Paul is one of the best manga translators in the game, and he wouldn’t add them if the original text didn’t call for them. That means: Zoro is losing his cool. He knows of all people, Shanks would make the perfect lure to get Luffy on board for some crazy shit. He needs to caution Luffy against falling into a possible trap.
It worked. Luffy has a healthy dose of skepticism now: “You think Loki doesn’t even know?!” Luffy’s mad. Aww. He’s probably disappointed. ☹️
………….
And what do ya know? ZORO BACKPEDALS!!!
“I’m just basing it on his reputation… I didn’t see the guy.”
Y’all! This man sees how disappointed his captain got when he played devil’s advocate and he immediately backs off and tries to find a middle ground. “Hey, no worries, maybe Loki isn’t a liar. The fuck do I know, Luffy, I wasn’t even there!”
Absolute marshmallow pushover fake-ass tough guy.
(I adore him.)
The culmination of all this? Zoro’s gonna do everything possible to make his captain happy while keeping him safe. You see, he will get the keys to Loki’s cuffs, and then together, they will decide if Loki’s a liar or not. Zoro isn’t going to stop Luffy from finding out more info on Shanks, not if there’s even the slightest possibility Loki was telling the truth, but he is also not letting Luffy do this alone. He doesn’t trust anyone else’s judgment either. So it’ll be him and Luffy, sharing one brain cell against the world. (Until Nami caught them, which, like, thank goodness lol.)
—————
This chapter contains everything I love about ZoLu: Guard dog behavior from Zoro; complete trust in Zoro from Luffy; hot-headed captain teaming together with not-really-aloof first mate; Zoro inserting himself so that Luffy can still go on as his goofy self. I love that they didn’t say shit to the rest of their crew, that they wanted to just GO and do their own thing for a little bit.
It reminds me of their mad dash to the plateau on Dressrosa, or them standing side by side facing down Aqua Laguna, or Zoro going with Luffy to Roof Piece. These instances show again and again that out of the entire crew, Zoro is the closest to being Luffy’s equal. And every time, Luffy is grateful for the companionship. There’s really no other duo doing it like these two.
#zolu#writing motivation#chapter 1136#ZoLu rant#from henceforth Zoro shall be known as marshmallow pushover fake-ass tough guy#absolutely bonkers chapter analysis#they’re in love your honor#dynamic duo

listen to: lovers, anna of the north
practically, you've known caitlyn for your whole life and never once have you ever doubted your friendship with her, up until 10th grade where you started questioning your sexuality. you did feel something for girls but at the same time it wasn't just any girl, it was caitlyn. since she felt comfortable with you, you two would always initiate physical contact by randomly intertwining your fingers together, her laying on your shoulder or you putting your arm around her.
when you realised your feelings for her, those gestures slowly started feeling awkward to you. it would feel as if there was a huge lump in your throat whenever caitlyn is near you, not that you've ever minded. you were just concerned over the fact that she'd distance herself from you if she ever found out about your feelings towards her. she was always supportive, constantly accompanying you while you search up "am i gay" quizzes online, listening to your rants about your crushes.
ever since then, you decided to write a love letter for caitlyn because you were set on moving on from her and locking your feelings away to avoid any complications. the letter was kept in a black square shaped box with a lock on it, with the intention of keeping it safe from everyone. especially her.
the time on your laptop is currently 12:57am, the shining blue and green screen reflected on your glasses. caitlyn was fidgeting with the hem of your shirt while resting her chin on your shoulder and observing the essay you were typing out. the sounds of keyboard clicking and soft music playing in the background filled the room. the lighting was dim since she decided to leave only the night light on and have the tv play some sitcom.
"you can sleep if you want to, i can finish this up downstairs" you said with your eyes still focused on your last minute assignment. "this is fine, i enjoy your company" a small smile flickered on her face. you hummed as a response, enjoying the comfortable silence between the both of you.
after a couple minutes of more brainstorming and typing, you finally completed your assignment and clicked the "submit" button after rechecking it twice. you turned your laptop off and set it to the side, then returning to your original position with caitlyn. now, even more comfortable with her hugging your arm and decided to focus on the current sitcom playing, "brooklyn nine nine"
"jake and amy are so cute, their slowburn story is absolutely perfect" you shuffled in your position, allowing caitlyn to lean into you even closer. "if you were to be in a relationship at the moment, who would you be? jake or amy?" her soft voice disrupting your focus from the screen. "not sure, depends on who i'm in a relationship with" you shrugged. "if it was with me, who would you be?" her question nearly made you choke on your saliva. you were stammering, unsure of the perfect response to the said question. "maybe jake? i don't know" there it goes again, the lump in your throat building up.
"are you alright?" she was concerned after seeing your reaction. "yeah yeah i'm okay, just a little parched. i'm okay now" you thanked the gods above for the darkness that covered your red cheeks. caitlyn's mouth formed into a small "o" shape and nodded. "do you want some water? i could-" her sentence was cut off with a quick no from you.
your actions were quite strange to her, she's never seen you this way. not even when you were around your "crushes", her worries faded as she felt your thumb rubbing small circles on the back of her hand. her eyelids started feeling heavier and slowly she drifted to sleep unconciously.
you exhaled softly after she fell asleep, not wanting to wake her up. her question from earlier kept on repeating in your head and you clenched your jaw whenever you felt a slight pang in your heart. you slowly removed caitlyn's arms from yours and rested her head on her soft pillow. after doing so, you got up from the bed and grabbed your sling bag that was leaning against the wall of her bedroom. it was dark so you relied on your touch senses to search for an item, it was the box. the one that had a love letter for caitlyn.
you unlocked the box and opened it, lifting the brown envelope with your fingers. it had the words "for my beloved" written on it, you used your index finger to brush against it. you had left the letter beside caitlyn where she was sleeping, you assumed that she wouldn't give you a good reaction. after cursing yourself internally, you zipped your bag up and put on your jacket. you left the room and quickly rushed downstairs while trying to reach for the car keys in your right pocket.
"leaving so late? don't you want to spend the night?" you were met with cassandra sipping a cup of tea with her husband on the couch. "sorry ma'am, i just figured it'd be better if i let caitlyn get some rest" you gave her an awkward smile and rubbed the back of your neck. "that's nice of you to care for her well-being, i noticed that she's more reserved around you and i never worry when she's spending time with you" her mother was nice which made your heart sank even deeper.
"thank you for the compliment, i'll come back tomorrow if that's alright?" she and her husband nodded in agreement as you walked towards the door and waved them goodbye.
the rays of sunlight shined through the curtains of her window, causing her to slowly wake from her slumber. "g'morning" her voice was groggy and raspy from waking up, she put her hand out since she couldn't see clearly. but she could only feel a thin, flat material on her bed. "hey?" the absence of your presence surprised her. before she could reach for her phone, the envelope was pressed against her albow which intrigued her. she stopped her movements and decided to open it.
"dear caitlyn, i'm aware that our friendship is extremely precious to both me and you. however, there's something i must confess which might ruin the bond between us but i can't keep it to myself for anytime longer. i've developed feelings for you, i can't help but admit this to you. this has been going on for years, i'd like to apologise for the lies and fake rants about my 'crushes'. maybe it is a mistake to write this letter but i'd hate myself if i were to see you happy with someone else without being honest about my feelings to you. whatever happens between us, i want you to know that you'll always have a special spot to me. no matter who i choose to date, i'll always catch a glimpse of you in their eyes and sense your presence when they're around. that will haunt me eternally, i'm certain.
my heart was once and always will be yours. i love you, caitlyn kiramman.
love,
y/n"

Stellar the Hedgehog Analysis
Just got home from watching the third Sonic movie, and since it focuses so much on Sonic and Shadow's relationship, I thought it'd be the best time to do something I've wanted to do for a while - drop an incredibly long post about my thoughts on @emthimofnight's Sonadow fankid, Stellar the Hedgehog.
And before I say anything more, here's a link to her ref sheet: https://www.tumblr.com/emthimofnight/747427162447118336/name-stellar-the-hedgehog-age-varies-based-on?source=share
A lot of the time, Sonic OCs have been passed off as "cringe", due to the unfortunately well-known ones, but the actual community is full of some of the most dedicated lore-makers and designers I've ever seen, and I'm not even someone who knows Sonic that well! I've done a fair bit of research on the series, but I've never played the main games for myself. I just stumbled onto Stellar while I was mindlessly scrolling, and as I checked out all the posts regarding her, I realised I'd found one of the most intricate, passionate fan creations I'd ever seen, and she's been living rent-free in my head ever since.
Now, for the meat of this post: My analytical thoughts on her. Let's break it down into categories:
Design and Personality:
I'm no expert on character design, I've barely even tried to do it myself (outside of my over-designed Miitopia OCs), but Stellar is absolutely striking. Her fur colour is a clever blend of Sonic's blue and Shadow's black, a dark blue resembling space, with a splash of red thrown in to add to the Shadow of it all. She has stripes as well, but as opposed to Shadow's slashing shapes, hers are more bendy, twisting into the form of a star. Inhibitor rings are strapped to her sneakers, a very poetic combination of her dads' getups, but she's also got her knee and elbow guards, a little touch of her own that links in with her fighting style, and also represents the constant protection around her which I'll get to later.
She's extremely star-coded, from the name to the space colour to the fur markings, and I think that was the perfect direction to go. Stars feel ethereal, but entirely grounded at the same time, a cosmic entity we can look towards at any point. Stellar is much the same, she contains an absolutely incredible power, taking after two previous incredible powers, but her personality is so warm and cheerful, and her very existence is what brings Sonic and Shadow together.
And that's the other point I want to make in this category. Stellar actually has three older siblings who died before they were born (I'll get to that), and they're essentially a sliding scale of Shadow's genes to Sonic's genes. Void is almost entirely Shadow, Andromeda has a bit more Sonic, Polarity is more Sonic than Shadow, and Stellar herself is the only true balance. That's a good word to describe what she represents, balance. Sonic's kindness combined with Shadow's anger, Sonic's showboating combined with Shadow's self-confidence, with her own bubbliness and grace added on top. Everything about her design, just like her role in the "SonDADow AU", simply clicks together.
Background Lore:
As someone unfamiliar with the history of the Sonic fandom, I'm not sure how common the "Sonadow fankid made in a lab" trope is. I know Stellar was not the first, and it'd be unreasonable to assume she was - but I'm willing to bet that Emthim has the very best exploration of the concept.
The failed siblings, for a start. That's a dark turn to take off the bat, the idea that Project: STELLAR has been attempted so many times, and still hasn't been shut down because these people are so desperate to put more insane power out into the world, but it really does set the tone for what's going on here. Stellar, just like Shadow, isn't being viewed as a genuine lifeform despite her title, she and all her siblings were a piece in the puzzle for a bunch of self-absorbed scientists trying to recreate a project that was inhumane from the start. Shadow is frequently pictured as struggling to cope with the knowledge of this project, and of the failed siblings, as it'd very obviously strike a lot of nerves. Sonic reminds him to move forward, though. Just like he always has.
That's another incredible aspect of all of this - Sonic and Shadow being forced to parent together despite being not-very-close-friends before this point. The little interactions displaying their bickering about how much influence each of them have had on their daughter, and constantly fumbling on taking care of her because all three of them have overpowering abilities that completely change how they go about their lives, give so much life to the relationship depicted between them all. Stellar is never outright told about her origin, because Sonic and Shadow want to keep her out of that life, and that level of protection being shown both warms the heart, and fills it with a sense of dread for when she'll find out, because it's (realistically) not a perfect strategy. This all adds so much to the idea that they were haphazardly thrown together by the circumstances of Stellar's very existence, and the duo of hedgehogs are just trying to make do.
Stellar as a sort of "dark star", in her ultimate form or Villain AU, is a concept that really ties it all together. She originated from an evil cause, something that only exists to cause unparalleled destruction, and yet her good will and sense of justice shines through no matter what. You can tie aspects of the same theme to both of her parents, but it's wholly concentrated in her story.
Powers and Abilities:
She's a figure-skater. That's pretty much the whole reason this category exists, I really want to break that down for a second.
The duality of ice skating is one-to-one with the duality of Stellar, in my eyes. It's a graceful, beautiful, typically feminine activity, but it's incredibly easy to cause damage with those blades, and strike the sickest poses on your foes. Stellar has a clearly-defined soft side to her, she's very sweet to the people she cares about, and has that all-encompassing energy only a child of Sonic could possess, but just as much as that, she will rip and tear through someone at a moment's notice if they piss her off, she's got that impulsiveness to her, and we all know she's got the power to back it up. She can be either of these things at any moment, the artistic blade always has an edge to it, and the contrast is no contradiction - She simply is all of her.
On top of that, I want to talk more about the dark/collapsing star form. The idea that she possesses such capacity for destruction, which could take her over from the inside out, that would leave her loved ones desperately reaching out to find that shining star - it has not left my mind since I first saw it. It's one of the most compelling narrative devices anywhere in this AU, there's so much potential in a character like Stellar, making an impact wherever she moves, becoming shrouded in the colossal darkness that still plagues her life no matter what she does. As for the specific piece that drew me into this form so much? I'll link it in the final category.
Camellar:
https://www.tumblr.com/emthimofnight/742720101897437184/some-sketches-illustrating-the-relationship?source=share
The first image in the set is the one I was just referencing, but I'd be retreading ground by talking about it, so I'll focus more on their relationship in general.
I love how it's so "mutual pining childhood friends"-coded, while also straying a decent bit away from the common tropes. Only Camellia has the feelings bouncing around her head like a DVD logo every moment of her life, because Stellar doesn't actually comprehend it at all, despite feeling much the same. True to her nature, she's so focused on building positive relationships with people that she doesn't recognise some of the intricacies of what the relationship is truly like, or what she truly feels herself. She's at her softest around Camellia, due to their long-lasting affection, but she's also at her fiercest when she gets protective. Camellia brings out every aspect of her personality in a way no-one else does... and certainly not a dishonest rival.
Rocket is my absolute favourite addition to the Camellar dynamic because he throws such a gigantic wrench in everything. His relationship with Stellar has none of the safety that Camellia's does, he's all about the thrill of it, feeding into the inexplicable attraction without thought of whether it'll hurt in the end or not. Initially, this is all one-sided on Stellar's side, eventually becoming one-sided on Rocket's, and either way, it brings about a vindictiveness in Camellia she usually isn't prone to, because just as much as Stellar is looking out for her, she's looking out for Stellar - in a variety of ways. She wants what's best for her, but she's also throughly convinced that it won't be anyone other than herself, and she's also right, especially since Rocket's such a prick at the end of the day.
The truth is, the reason Sonic and Shadow work is that they can keep up with each other. Both of their life stories are about becoming as free of a spirit as they can be, tossing aside everything thrown in their path to become confident in themselves and what they stand for. Stellar and Camellia are much the same. From an aesthetics and basic dynamic standpoint, there's more comparisons to draw between them and Sonamy, but in that case, it's entire game's worth of miscommunication and problem avoidance. In the case of Camellar, they're significantly more head-on with everything, they're both incredibly blunt about their affection, it's just that the romance aspect is lost in translation on Stellar's side. Not like that's the part that really matters, it's the mere unbreakable bond. The one that gets a princess desperately reaching out through a collapsing star for its heart. The one that gets a shining star to settle down for a moment.
Closing Thoughts:
This post definitely didn't cover everything. So much about Stellar is whirring around my brain at any given moment, I have no idea how I'd manage to jot it all down in a comprehensible and complete format, but this is what I've got. A post that hopefully shows just how deep my appreciation for Emthim's work goes, and how talented of a creator I believe her to be. Thank you for reading.
#stellar the hedgehog#sonadow#sonadow fankid#camellar#as you can see I have no idea how to tag this#writing an essay that will never be graded#that's always a fun one

I'm just procrastinating work by thinking about the distressing decline of critical thinking and media literacy, but the take "Writing dark content allows people to heal from their own negative experiences," while true enough, also feels like it is missing a critical dimension:
Fiction needs victims because empathy is a learned skill.
Through sympathizing with the plights of fictional characters, upon whom we can safely project ourselves, we learn to identify with the suffering of others in the real world as well, even those with whom we do not share similarities.
Fiction's central function is the recognition and resolution of conflict, an absolutely vital real life skill that requires the ability to resonate with the challenges of those outside our Self.
Our stories need suffering so the real world can have less of it.
#irl stuff#so tired of online literary debates hosted by people who've never read anything but fanfiction#and I say that as a fanfiction author#just thoughts sparked by things on social media#so I can write this instead of grade essays#can't believe we're having to relearn the ancient Greek concept of catharsis 2500 years late

this feels too soon to say because its still not well over a month that i started uni but like...
im quite happy by how things are going now- it doesn't feel all too restrained unlike my past school years. and apart from that, i feel a lot more independent being able to travel miles away from my home which has been my biggest anxiety as i got older. just the fear of getting lost spooks me a whole lot! even if i'm travelling through a planned route, going all by myself is probably the bravest thing i did this year and i say this as an introvert who doesn't go out all too often
#ive always wanted to share this sudden core memory of mine when i was grade 12: i liked my english teacher a lot and she made us write an-#-essay about something that.. i want to overcome? i think? i forgot but i remember my passage very well#i basically summarized that i feel i haven't developed that well as an adult in terms of maturity and feel that im very left out in social-#-situations. as well as feeling like a serious adult. i basically said that i wish i was given more time to get myself together#then when i got my paper back: my teacher had checked it with a little message near it: and it said something like#“it's okay to experience this - time will wait for you and you still much time to learn and grow” something like that. not verbatim but#that's what i remembered so well. when i read that i felt so happy and understood#i am not that close to my teachers but seeing that this teacher cared to really read my passage and not just check for grammar mademe joyous#so remembering that - and now that im in uni - typing this all out as i wait for my bus that will take an hour worth of travel to go to#i feel really accomplished#irl banter#~ rambling#yeah :)#my point is. you're never too late to learn new things

#well I just submitted my essay for my history class so I'm finally done with finals#I wish I felt happier or relieved or something but I don't. I feel awful. my body hurts from the incredible amount of tension/anxiety I had#trying to finish it before 11:59. I submitted it at 11:55. I have never come that close before and I hate it#the amount of anxiety I had you'd think the deadline was hunting me for sport#and what's worse is I felt all this anxiety and put all this work into it and I'm not even happy about it#I spent two days trying to figure out what he wanted us to write about because apparently he just seems to be really bad at instructions#like I thought maybe it was just me overthinking but I spent two hours talking to my mom about it and in the end even she couldn't figure i#so then I had only two days to gather notes make an outline write an essay. while burnt out and barely able to focus.#and while not knowing exactly what I was doing like is this what he wants. is it not. who knows I literally don't have time left#to figure it out I just need to write something and hope it works#but I hate being unsure it makes everything harder#especially because I really wanted to make a good grade. this was the class where I made a 78 on my midterm#which brought my class grade to a B but I'd been able to get it back to an A and I'd be able to keep it if I got like an 80ish on the final#the essay turned out okay idk if it's what he wanted but whatever at least I got the other requirements like word count and sources#but the CITATIONS...we had to use chicago which I'd never used before and let me just say. mla is the love of my life after this.#actually chicago might not be that bad if I got used to it I think my violence should be directed toward every word processor#that links footnotes. it is so STUPID that there isn't an easier way to make them different#if it hadn't been for trying to figure out footnotes on google docs I could've submitted it like ten minutes earlier#and with phenomenally less stress#I eventually had to make a choice as to what I'd give up: (1) submitting it on time (2) perfect citations or (3) word doc#which is what he wanted it submitted as#except when I tried that thank goodness I looked at the preview before I submitted it because I saw that it'd messed up the citations#I ended up submitting it as a pdf. on time. with perfect (maybe) (I didn't have time to double check) citations. but not as a word doc.#is it the end of the world? idk probably not but not meeting a professor's requirements is like. anathema.#all of that is to say that I'm going to cry and then let it go and get to bed and just. idk. I've reached that point where#I'm so tired and numb that it feels like I'll never feel better#anyway#maybe I hurt because of my meds and the side effects decided to kick in now because the grace of God held them back long enough#for me to finish#earl crow ramblings

My goal was to grade 10 papers today. I really really reeeeaaaallyyyyy didn't want to and had to fight tooth and nail through the executive dysfunction. I clawed my way through at a pace of one essay per hour. I hated it, but I did it!
It's not even the fact that I reached my goal that made me happy (it was arbitrary). It's the fact that I'm even capable of getting through difficult things I don't want to do at all. I have been working on my self-discipline and focus for years and I'm very proud of myself for how far I've come.
#adhd problems#considering that 9 years ago i was failing several university classes due to undiagnosed ADHD#and in the past 3 years I've grown enough to do an online master's degree which required me to write a 12k word dissertation by myself#and in the past 5 months i started a job as a university professor and i have to be so self-motivated#i am solely responsible for making lesson plans and doing all the grading#grades are due August 17 and i have graded 30/40 essays as of today#if i can get 5 more done tomorrow and 5 on the weekend i can submit them on Sunday#which is a whole week early and was my carefully scheduled goal#so yeah the fact that i can force myself to stick to my schedule even though i don't HAVE to? 9 years ago me could never#personal#and tbh this is my version of self-care and it sucks but i can do it#i will take great pains to never let myself feel the way i did in 2015 when i flunked out of school#I'll get my grades in early so i can let myself enjoy the rest of the summer

I'm so nervous about writing an essay for the first time in two years. What if I do horribly 💀
#logically I think it'd be highly unlikely that I would do badly enough to not pass#and this is just one free standing class so the grade I get isn't actually that important#failing would be bad though because it would complicate things with students benefits next time I apply lol#but I don't actually feel much pressure to get an A or anything#but I'm still nervous because it's been a while since I've written academically#and I've always been better at doing in in english than swedish so that's another thing#(probably partially because I have more practice writing in english) (so I guess it's good for me to practice doing it in swedish)#anyways yeah. I've never written an essay that was anywhere close to getting an F#so even if this is higher level and I'm a bit rusty I don't really think it's likely that I'll fail#but I'm still nervous#I also know I won't get started until next week because of the taylor shows but I'll still have 10 days so it should be fine#I mean I'll probably take a look at some stuff tomorrow but yeah#personal

The Scythe Cutscene: A Failtopia Analysis
At the end of Failtopia Season 2, the final boss (Hank the Demon Lord, also known as Lee) is defeated in two ways - first, a frying pan to the head from Mar, in regular gameplay, and second, a scythe torn through him by C!Failboat, in a custom cutscene.
There’s an argument to be made that C!Fail should not have been the one to get the final blow on Hank, and a good argument too. He was the protagonist of Season 1, who wasn’t especially competent and only really succeeded for plot reasons, and because he got carried. Mar was the protagonist of Season 2, going through the final stages of his redemption arc after being the final boss of Season 1 three years prior. He was defeated with a frying pan to the head then, and defeats his ultimate foe (who takes on the exact same form he did) through the exact same method… only for Hank to revitalise himself after the hit, and get killed by C!Fail’s magic scythe he never uses.
It’s easy to see how Mar got cheated out of his thematic victory, for the sake of C!Fail-centric bullshit. Hank was Mar’s ultimate enemy, given that Mar possessed him for years on end in Season 1, only for him to turn around and pull the same shit on a close ‘friend’ of Mar’s, but his motivations were presented as hatred towards Failboat (the real one) for doing a terrible job of managing the world of Miitopia. A reasonable motivation, ignoring the lack of explanation for how he found out about all that, but it feels a little cheap knowing that his motivation could’ve simply been revenge against Mar for Season 1.
That’s a good argument, but my overanalysing brain came to a different conclusion about these events. Firstly, the finale.
I think it was the perfect conclusion to C!Fail’s character arc. He was largely unhelpful for the entirety of Season 1, despite being the protagonist, because he didn’t put the effort in, and had no leadership skills. These flaws are explored and worked upon in Season 2, where he’s relinquished his leadership position to Mar, and actually puts the effort in to become an indispensable teammate.
In Season 1, the final blow on Mar was not dealt by C!Fail. It was dealt by Smuk, using a frying pan to the head, assisting C!Fail’s attack. He wasn’t competent enough to finish the job without his team, but because he’s the team leader, the burden to take credit falls on him. Mar, on the other hand, has always worked in tandem with his team to dish out hits on the enemies, especially as he cries over their falls. This is a huge step up from feeling so empty inside that he literally killed himself, he’s learning to express his personality.
Therefore, the final blows on Hank are dealt as follows: Mar avenges a fallen teammate by delivering a tearful final blow on Hank, perfectly mirroring the one he himself was given three years prior, completing his redemption arc. Then, C!Fail steps up to the plate to finish the job, using the weapon at his disposal he’s been wilfully ignoring this whole time, completing his arc of learning to be a competent fighter. Mar takes the credit afterwards, because he’s earned it, but C!Fail is the one who talks to the Great Sage and helps to heal Hank, because the single good thing he did in Season 1 was help to heal Mar. He’s still the same optimistic dumbass, but he’s become experienced, and worked in tandem with the team to win this, he wasn’t just carried.
As for Hank’s motivations, he attacked the unnamed Dark Curse for seemingly no reason, unless you consider the fact that he was possessed by a Dark Curse for all those years of suffering. He does, in fact, hold a grudge against Mar, he just has other, bigger priorities. Do with that information what you will.
My point is, there’s a lot of thematic significance to be found in C!Fail dealing the ‘final blow’ with the Scythe, and it’s much easier to find it if you don’t call it the ‘final blow’, singular. Hank wouldn’t’ve needed to revitalise himself if Mar hadn’t killed him the first time. There were two ‘final blows’, dealt by Mar and C!Fail respectively.
All we need now is for C!Fail to be left the fuck alone for Season 3, I cannot stress enough that he doesn’t need any more plot relevance.

Hi. Op of the college post. I wanted to extend my apology for your friend's death (i actually made the post in memory of a friend who also died) and to ask what major you were in? An essay on hauntology sounds intriguing, id be curious to know more. Well, sorry if this is random and sudden, your tags just jumped out to me in the notifications as the most interesting thing someone left on that post. I hope you have a lovely day!
thank you for your thoughts. i want to extend the same to you, i feel losing a friend so young at such an already tumultuous time in your life is one of the most difficult things to go through, but we did it 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
i studied english literature at uni. the class i wrote the essay on was contemporary world literature and the prompt was 'discuss the importance of grief or loss in contemp world lit and I chose the books Autumn by Ali Smith and Alfred and Emily by Doris Lessing (which if you haven't read already id really recommend). i think the conclusion sums up what my thesis was better than i can now 2 years after writing it
In conclusion, grief and loss within these texts are tied to nostalgia, of either objects, memory, or people. However, this grief disrupts the memory and the linear narrative, and as such time bleeds into eachother. Events from the past cannot be remembered without knowing what is to come, whereas idealisations of the future must be rooted in something from history, the consequence of which is that ‘the futuristic now connoted a settled set of concepts, affects, and associations.’ (Fisher, 2012, p.16). Difficulties arise however when these concepts and associations are established in a history of violence and loss. This exchange expresses the continuous feeling of grief, as characters are repeatedly acknowledging and ‘burying’ what ‘haunts’ them while unable to live in a future without what they have already buried. Evidently, like a leaf ‘so stuck that when it eventually peels away, it's leafshape left behind, shadow of the leaf, will last on the pavement till next spring.’ (Smith p. 259) Contemporary World Literature must constantly acknowledge the past and present while looking to the future, forcing all three to exist concurrently.
dont worry about it being random, i made the joke that the post was made in a lab for me when its actually two people coincidentally relating over similar life experiences. i hope you have a lovely day also :))))
#also rereading this i dont think it's that good but whaever thats in y past now. got the grade :D#avds.got.mail#mihai-florescu#wishing you the best i dont know how long ago your friend passed but ik grief comes in waves and tumblr posts about grief is one of the#documented phases#i think if theres any subject in the world to study around the same time someone passes to work through your feelings of grief#literature is probably the best and most perfect one.#i got to write essays and short stories and poems about grief and have them be cathartic AND for a grade#curious as to what did you majored in if you were haunted by timeloops#my final dissertation was also on grief. i did that on never let me go by kazuo ishiguro and home fire by#kamila shamsie if youre in the market for more book recs
