the mystery’s still running, and it’s to the point i should let it unfold rather than be suspicious of everything LOL it doesn’t help that Bruce is hopped up on poppy (which actually seems to work?? seeing those “vestiges”) and Bashar is turning out to be too obvious a culprit with all this attention being pinned on him (but according to solicits, Damian conveniently being kidnapped after he’s announced joining Bashar’s youth program…)

we still don’t know what’s up with the guy shouting at Bruce from #14 was about, which brings me to how Di Giandomenico’s flashback sections left us with more questions - is that where the Nicodemus Crowe cult or loyal Mementists play into the present?? and who framed Professor Blye??

SLAPPING THE CONSPIRACY BOARD ONE LAST TIME, running with @gotham-snark’s suspicion of Lautrec:

this could be a case of “staying close to the scene of the crime” thing having Lautrec around for both the first Memento case in London (also her first case in general) and now for the reappearance of Memento in Gotham.

more heavy squinting here connecting how Lautrec could frame Blye - knowing the location of his flat, having regularly visited.

but someone was fleeing the lab, so could there be multiple Mementos?? it’s a cult after all, and there seems to be plenty of death masks lying around lol

otherwise, outside of the comic, her first appearance issue was hyped up by both writer and artist. it could be a sign she’s the potential new big bad or she’ll become a longer running character sticking around Gotham to fulfill a similar role to the retired Jim Gordon 🤔 she's sharp and already getting familiar with Batman and Robin to the point of almost deducing identities - especially with the way she read "Jack" in #16. even her concerns for Robin are similar to Jim's in Robin: Year One

which brings us to the "Harvey Night"!

this being referenced as “a thing between the rest of us” is actually pretty fun to note. since it held a weight of failure and guilt, it’s a story that Dick was originally hesitant to tell Tim; but this implies he’s presumably now told all the Robins and Batgirls so, progress for Dick there??

Dick's "Harvey Night" was introduced in Robin (1993) #0 with Tim asking about how Dick became Robin and how his perception of Robin changed - basically, Bruce, Dick, and a district attorney(Robin1993)/judge(R:YO) Harvey had beef with are captured. Bruce and the attorney/judge are to be hung at the gallows with Dick betting on Dent's coin toss that ultimately ends with the attorney/judge drowning.

the story Dick tells Tim in Robin (1993) #0 is expanded upon with slight changes in Robin: Year One, but the incident ends with Dick being brutally beaten before Bruce can escape his bonds to save him.

i’ll mainly be drawing parallels from Robin: Year One between Dick and Damian's Harvey Nights because i'm starving for funsies!

Dick was already a trained acrobat, but add Batman training and he was taking down Gotham heavyweights breezily. Damian has always been assured in his skills, trained since birth to be prepared for anything. both make a mistake on the field that shakes their confidence.

Dick believed Robin is what allowed him to stay by Bruce’s side, and if he wasn’t good enough he had no reason to be there. for Damian, this event makes him question not just himself, but his own purpose as Robin.

with the Harvey Night being directly referenced, this last parallel deals more with how Bruce briefly lost Dick back then, to losing Damian now.

so Damian quitting…

while Damian’s efforts in volunteering at the hospital are lovely, he isn’t quitting Robin for it. quitting would be an act against half the statements he overheard from Bruce, which would be a silly reason to quit over…

he originally went to the hospital worried and guilty about Emma and was just offered a position to volunteer. the opportunity was a way for Damian to make up for his failing, maybe even an escape from any further faults. it’s also progress in pursuing ways to help others outside the suit!! either way, while he's taking bigger steps to be more involved at the hospital, Damian as Robin isn’t going anywhere in the comic-selling scope 😭

i said “Dick and Damian crumb” at the time of writing this up, but in a recent update from Miguel Mendonca, this arc’s interior artist alongside Javi Fernandez…
