It wasn't the first time a pup had fallen ill. But It was the first time a sick pup refused a meal.

The warm wind coming up the hill promised a lush summer ahead to the young family.
Avalanche was no runt, but he had always been the smallest of the litter. Though his father was insisting on getting him to eat, the sick pup only ignored him with heavy lidded eyes, and laid down for a nap. Soleil felt his chest filling up with thousands of apologies and regrets. He could have been a better parent, he should have tried harder.
The young father laid down next to his son, holding him tight as if it was going to fix anything, and stayed still until he felt the small body exhale for the very last time.
