8. Hi! I'm looking for this fic where wwx and lwj are thrown into an arranged marriage together, and don't know each other. Wwx is generally happy and excited, and lwj sees this and immediately hates him, bcoz he wanted a calm, quiet spouse to live with. The whole thing is orchestrated by Madam Yu, who basically abandons wwx at cloud recesses bcoz she figures he would be miserable here. Lwj doesn't like him to or try to understand him, so wwx slowly gets more and more depressed and suicidal, kind of as a parallel to Madam lan. I think he tries teaching for a while, and he's very good at it, but the elders step in and claim he's corrupting the children, so that's that. He finds the yin iron, and plans to destroy it worth a circle that will also take him out along with it, but before he can go through with the plan lwj realises how depressed he is and starts making an effort to help him. The fic ends with lwj offering to run away from cloud recesses with him, and wwx telling him no, he doesn't want to be some sort of shameful indulgence, if lwj really wants him he'll stay and fight with the elders on his behalf @arsonistbydaylibrarianbynight

9. Hi! For the next Fic Finder, I’ve been trying to find a fic where LWJ leaves the CR to go help WWX in the Burial Mounds. It kind of starts of with LWJ and WWX confrontation after WWX rescues the Wens. There’s a sequence where LWJ is gathering stuff to take to the Burial Mounds. Then in later chapters it’s LXC, LQR, and a couple of Lan Elders going to Yiling to try and bring LWJ back to the CR. They find him in Yiling, selling produce, only to discover that LWJ is living a happy life with WWX and is no longer following Gusu Lan’s rules as he lets a bunch of kids decorate his hair. I will call them mc and ml (if it was a fanfic, wwx is the mc). They are an actor. The mc got a big role and there are a sex scene in the film with the ml. And then the mc catch a feeling to the ml. The plot of the movie they shoot is where the mc always running away. The movie plot kinda resobate with the mc feeleng. And the writting style is tell a twi stoey. The movie plot and the fic. Long story short, the mc get kidnapped. I dont remember if its trully happen or the movies's plot but i think the mc was genuinely kidnapped. The kidnapping is meticulous that make people tell the ml to brace himself for the worst case scenario. The ml helped to find the mc. In the end, the mc is found but in the bad shape. Near the end of the story, they are in shooting where the plot is the ml found the mc. They hugged and the staff say that it feels genuine.

A slightly unhinged case for jin guangyao knowing about the core transfer while WWX was still alive

Ok. SO. In chapter 101, during guangyin temple, Jin Guangyao clearly knows about the golden core transfer. He uses it to bring Jiang Cheng off-kilter and stab him and simultaneously reveals to wwx that jc himself now knows about the golden core transfer.

I've always wondered exactly when he figured it out. The most obvious explanation is that he pieced it together after hearing about Jiang Cheng asking everyone to unsheathe suibian (also? jgy? how the fuck do you know that? You were already going to/at Guanyin temple at this point! Did you just have people listen in on rumours from Yunmeng and report back to you for that?? Did you tell your spy network where you were going? My whole kingdom for a retelling of this arc from the pov of these random jin disciples seeing their sect leader start spiralling. He's diggin up random tombs? Fleeing the country? And threatening the heir's life?? What was random Jin cultivator #6 thinking of this before Nie Mingjue turned him into minced meat?)

BUT.

The first time I read that line I was like "oh so he's known for a WHILE." I mean, the line "I've always found it peculiar [that wwx never took his sword anywhere]" does indicate he's been thinking about this for a while, but it doesn't have to mean he knew back then. So I absolutely can't say with certainty that my instinct was right. But I DO have some decent canon backing for how he might have potentially figured things out as early as before Wei Wuxian's death. Specifically, after the discussion scene that takens place when wei wuxian does his thing with the wens and dissapears.

Cause, see, Wen Chao would definitely have bragged about Wen Zhuliu crushing Jiang Cheng's core to his father. He killed the current sect leader, and then permanently disabled the only heir. He did it! the Jiang are gone! I bet he was very loud about it until, a few weeks later, Jiang Cheng suddenly strolls up to the battlefield, with Zidian on his finger, cultivation very much intact, looking for Wei Wuxian.

That must've been fucking baffling if you were Wen Chao and/or Wen Zhuliu and/or any other cultivator who was there and definitely saw Jiang Cheng's core get crushed. They must have assumed something went wrong, or he faked having his core destroyed, but we've never heard of something like that happening before, and they tortured him for hours! It wasn't a quick batle where Wen Zhuliu must have missed in haste, he would've noticed!

Now, by the time Meng yao arrives, wen zhuliu and wen chao are both long dead, but that kind of thing would at least still be a source of gossip among the other Wen. The only time the core melting hand ever failed!

It might be something that, say... a very careful spy with a perfect memory looking for information... might pick up on in his stay with the Wen, no?

So, Meng Yao has heard the rumour that sect leader Jiang got his core crushed but somehow managed to... still have a core.

Independantly of his, Wei Wuxian is being really weird and refusing to carry his sword. His primary concern there is wwx stirring shit up, he has no reason to believe these things are connected yet.

But then Wei Wuxian runs off with a bunch of Wen, and before he is cut off, Jiang Cheng tells everyone that after the siege on lotus pier, he and wei wuxian were helped by Wen Qing and Wen Ning! Jiang Cheng doesn't get to say how, which is good for jgy in this moment because he's trying to steer the conversation as such that no one gets mad at the Jin sect for all the war crimes, but even if his goal is for everyone else to forget Jiang Cheng said that, he'd remember it.

So... after the moment where jiang cheng, according to rumours that were contained to the wen, lost his core, he was helped by wen ning and wen qing, who is a really good doctor. And, in canon, had written theoretical proposals on core transfers before, just never experimented on them. Were these available for others among the Wen to read? Did jgy read them? We have no way of knowing. But if he did, he remembers them. Either way, he knows her reputation.

And Wei Wuxian disappeared right round that same moment, only to resurface with his demonic cultivation, at which point he never touched his sword again. Not even in the middle of a dangerous war. Not even when he was public enemy number one and it would do wonders for his reputation if he was seen cultivating the traditional path. When doing so would have made not just him but the 50 people he was shielding safer! if Jin guangyao was somehow in his position, he'd immediately do everything he could to counteract the narrative of beign a dangerous madman who'd left the straight path. Wei Wuxian has been in absolutely desperate situations and still refuses to pick up his sword...

The saying doesn't exist yet, but i'm sure someone like jgy, more competent than everyone around him, is intimately familair with at least the sentiment of "never ascribe to malice what is adequately explained by incompetence" He is helping spread the narrative of Wei Wuxian as a violent madman, sure, but does he believe it? If it makes no sense for wei wuxian, no longer a privileged young master but an outcast, to not pick up his sword again out of arrogancy, the most reliable explanation is that he... can't.

So Jiang Cheng, who got his core melted, got help from Wen Qing, an incredible doctor, after which he coud cultivate just fine but Wei Wuxian, no matter how desperate, never used traditional cultivation ever again...

Hm. interesting!

It's likely no one else in the jianghu outside of the wen even knew Jiang Cheng lost his core to begin with. And Jin Guangyao was never given wwx's excuse of Baoshan Sanren owing him a favor like Jiang Cheng was. He has all the puzzle pieces in front of him and... if anyone as gonna put them together, it'd be him.

And that's my unhinged case for why I believe Jin Guangyao knew Wei Wuxian didn't have a golden core anymore years before anyone else did. He just never told anyone, because why would he?

I think this adds a whole other level to his speech to Jiang Cheng about how everything could've worked out if he'd just trusted Wei Wuxian more and stood by his side. He saw it all play out in real time knowing there was more going on beneath the surface!

Now the really interesting question becomes: When did he figure out Jiang Cheng himself wasn't in on it? Did he piece it together immediately from remembering seeing jiang cheng berate wwx for not carrying a sword, a thing he should've known he couldn't do? Or was it not until later, maybe the fake yunmeng bros fallout, or the REAL fallout when Jiang Yanli died? Or was it still the news of Jiang Cheng going around and asking everyone to unsheathe subian that made him realize that oh my god this stupid bitch had no idea the whole time.

if the possibility of a core-transfer ever breached containment, the consequences would be....

they find the the laboratory months after fact. at first, they don't know what they've found until wei wuxian finds a hidden cache and inside the cache wen qing's notes. he recognizes the words but not the writing. jin guangyao is the first suspect. but then a-yuan goes pale when he sees what wei wuxian found.

poor boy. he wanted to preserve wen qing's genius, her greatest achievement and so without anyone knowing he recorded it for the lan archives.

nie huiasang who so often seems to know everything repeats, "sect leader jiang?"

"everyone knows that sect leader jiang is the one to call upon when dealing with the fo." the sect leader's eyes fall on wei wuxian and he changes the word to "demonic cultivators." the jiang sect is not anymore helpful and jiang cheng is missing out on this discussion conference.

in the end, it's sect leader yao who finishes the discussion. "it's always been on the jiang sect to do away with the consequences of their sect leader's fancies. so why should this be any different?"

this leads to nods all around, even among the nie and the lan elders who travelled to the conference. yunmeng jiang accepts this without protest.

jiang cheng is indeed quite busy. he has got the doctor, the man who hired him and the surviving test subjects in for an interview.

to the surviving test subjects, he offers shelter, a new identity, a new life within or without the jiang sect if only she permits them to study her. but what convinces them is the promise that in the end they get to finish off the good doctor.

the doctor is questioned not tortured madmen always want to talk so it is unnecessary. jiang cheng only needs to hint at having been treated by wen qing during the war and the man is all over him. "you were the one to kill wen zhuliu too?" he asks, while his hands press against jiang cheng's stomach. they are sweaty. "such a fascinating person. a genius, a visionary one might say." jiang cheng recalls how his arm shook while wen zhuliu kicked and struggled and lets the doctor talk.

the man who made all of this possible jiang cheng teaches about the many downsides to having a body supported by a golden core. yunmeng jiang sect has always prided itself on attempting the impossible and its research team is an example of that. jiang cheng watches over every procedure. he is there when the first qi deviation happens.

jiang cheng's team informs him that unless he permits them to test on human subjects, this is as far as they go. jiang cheng puts a stop to the research. lets his new disciples have their way with the doctor.

once knowledge is out, it's out. eventually a new monster will think themself more clever than the rest of the world and jiang cheng will welcome them to lotus pier. and maybe some day, jiang cheng dismisses the thought, it bears no thinking about, he's behind on his correspondence.

traditionally, judgement is about self reflection, rather than the externally inflicted reflection depicted in the justice card, but I chose the core reveal for judgement because I think its what kickstarts jiang chengs self reflection, and it's such a huge moment of reckoning for him. judgement tells us to evaluate our own actions, which is what wen ning is essentially doing to jiang cheng in this scene. because that moment it is not only about a secret being revealed, it is about jiang cheng having to face the fact that he was wrong. that he was cruel and critical of someone who gave everything for him. that so much of wei wuxian's suffering would not have happened if it had not been for jiang cheng, and wei wuxian's love for him. and as much as wei wuxian did not want him to know, I don't think jiang cheng ever would have been able to self reflect and reckon with his mistakes if he had never found out about the core transfer, if no one had ever told him to his face that he had done something terrible to someone he was supposed to love

suibian is centered in this card as a vessel of judgement - it is literally the weapon that deals truth upon jiang cheng and forces him to face it

wei wuxian falls from the sky like a realization falling upon jiang cheng. I imagine that in this moment, for him, everything goes black and as he races through his memories - his regrets - it pinpoints into a single event

I wanted jiang cheng to look small and meek in this card, truly shrunken and crushed by the weight of the situation. and also wen ning should always be six and a half feet tall and built like a bulldozer ❤️

18. Apologies for dropping this in right after you've posted a fic finder. I'm looking for two fics.

A) The first is where Lan Wangji, having learned Wei Wuxian has lost his core, uses an old technique that allows him to grow a second golden core (the idea being the user would absorb the second to make the original stronger), so he can donate one golden core to Wei Wuxian.

B) The second is where Wei Wuxian has been cursed or enchanted in some way that he can't remember Lan Wangji, who enters the Burial Mounds disguised as a new Wen so he can get to the bottom of it with the other Wens helping him in the ruse. There's a scene close to the end where he comes across Wei Wuxian being wooed by someone (think it was Su She) wearing his Wen disguise. It leads to a confrontation where Wei Wuxian tries to defend the false Lan Wangji against the real one and it leads to the spell breaking.

20. Hey :), I'm just trying to find an all old fic where Wei Wuxian didn't get torn to pieces and instead ended up immortalised. I half suspect that it was removed from ao3 but the details are as follows: wwx 'dies' but is found breathing, the cultivation world examines his body and finds him at gates of immortality essentially.

At this point JC figures out the core thing because they build a shrine for him and bring suiban (still sealed but he can remove it) and LQR does too (independently examing the body). When demonic cultivation starts being a problem again LQR starts a rumour that they need to "fight fire with fire' and efforts begin after 13 years to resurect Wei Ying. He wakes up mad, storms into a conference and LWJ follows him out when he storms out. He bumps into Jingyi at the koi tower steps, later down the line adopts Mo XuanYi from the Mo village (joking that his name is stranger isntead of saying hes the YLZ), end up wearing lwj overrobe at one point and finally once again travelling with LY and LJY.

Plot really picks up when they enter the town which was affected by the demonic cultivation. It is deserted, but they encounter the being that tormented him in the burial mound, XY, and other new-immortals. Its revelead immortality is gained through suffering like WWX had and he's forced to accept a demonic core to save JC and JL. He dies once again in Gusu but LWJ keeps pooling qi into him, which makes his resurrection faster.

Rant about the core transfer:

I almost never see Jiang Cheng react to the core transfer in fanfic even close to the way he did in canon.

In canon (per chapter 102), his complaints consist of:

*Wei Wuxian is too good. He's so selfless, he's a better person than JC, JC basically feels forced into being grateful. WWX is better at JC in everything, from understanding the Jiang Sect motto to his talent, cultivation, spirituality, and personality. He has outdone JC at everything.

*WWX broke his promise to be JC's subordinate forever and never betray him, and especially he broke his promise to protect Wens.

*It's WWX's fault that JC's whole family died except for JL. He repaid the kindness the Jiang Sect showed him with death.

*WWX owes the Jiang Sect, but now JC feels like he has wronged WWX when he thinks he should hate him.

*He asks why WWX didn't tell him.

*Then he returns to WWX breaking his promise.

Things that do NOT feature into this complaint:

*He did not ask for WWX to do this.

*He would not have wanted WWX to make that sacrifice for him.

*He would have said no if only WWX had been willing to ask him.

JC's response to the core transfer is self-centered. He does not seem to be thinking about what it meant for WWX, how it affected WWX, at all.

The way fanfic completely changes JC's response is just...boring.

Yes, I think that if he had found out about the core transfer at a different point in canon (any time before Jin Zixuan's death), then he would have reacted differently...but only because he would not have been marinating in his hatred for 13 years. I think he would be less focused on what WWX owed the Jiangs and the wrongs WWX committed.

That still leaves JC's bitterness that this basically enshrines WWX as the better person forever. There's still the competitive aspect.

That is why WWX didn't tell him. He knew that if someone as "unhealthily competitive" as JC found out about this, he'd "be dispirited his whole life, too tortured to face himself" because whatever he achieved came from another's sacrifice, not at all his own cultivation and achievement.

But fanfic writers pretty much never let JC just...be selfish for the reasons he is in canon. They never let him care about his competitiveness. When he is selfish, it's because he's angry that WWX didn't ask him, which has nothing to do with his response (he has one line asking why WWX didn't tell him after the fact, but he doesn't even dwell on that the way he does other complaints, so it doesn't seem to be high in what he cared about).

There are two reasons I want to see more of JC's reaction coming closer to canon. The first is that that would make him more in-character, but the second is that I think that would offer more opportunity for character growth.

The thing about JC's canon character arc is that it's negative. Chronologically, he goes from being basically a regular asshole (like, does he ever once say a kind thing to WWX?) to a real antagonist. He just keeps getting worse.

Letting JC react selfishly and competitively to an early core transfer reveal would acknowledge his character trajectory and offer him an opportunity to change it.

Making JC react like a "good brother" just...falls flat for me. It pushes no character growth. Let the "good brother" reaction be the end result of his character arc! Starting from there leaves him nowhere to go.

It's just...boring.

Jiang Cheng didn't treat Wei Wuxian with the dignity and respect any human being should be treated with, and that had nothing to do with what he knew or didn't know, because the moment Jiang Cheng found out about everything his reaction was not to think about Wei Wuxian in any way, he didn't think about how Wei Wuxian suffered, he didn't feel guilty about his attitude towards Wei Wuxian all these years, he didn't think about how the golden core transfer affected Wei Wuxian in any way. What he did do was blame Wei Wuxian for making him look like a clown. He got angry that he couldn't continue to blame Wei Wuxian for everything that went wrong in his life without looking like a clown. He was angry that from then on he couldn't continue to claim that Wei Wuxian owed him anything without looking like a fool. That's all Jiang Cheng cared about, so please don't come out here saying that his treatment of Wei Wuxian would have been different if he had known, because when he did find out, it didn't change anything.

Also, even though he didn't know the whole story, Jiang Cheng did know that Wei Wuxian and Wen Ning rescued him from Wen Chao's hands, that Wen Qing provided them with shelter and first aid and he believed he got a golden core back because of a favor that originally belonged to Wei Wuxian and that Wei Wuxian let him have, he knew that Wen Ning returned his parents belongings to him. But none of that mattered at all to Jiang Cheng, because Jiang Cheng is a person who only knows to demand gratitude from others. He is shown, on multiple occasions, to be incapable of feeling grateful to others.

The real reason Jiang Cheng treated Wei Wuxian in such an horrible way was because Jiang Cheng was and entitled person and he was jealous of Wei Wuxian. Jiang Cheng believed that as a clan heir he was naturally superior to others. This something he learned from his mother, and keep in mind that his father tried very hard to teach him otherwise. Because of this mindset, Jiang Cheng felt that everything others did for him was owed to him anyway because of his "superior status", so he never needed to feel grateful, but any small thing he did for others was seen a huge unpayable debt that he would never let go no matter what.

Jiang Cheng was spiteful, bitter, angry and entitled person who refused to take responsibility for his own life, insisted on blaming other people and Wei Wuxian especially, for everything that was unsatisfactory about his own life, threw tantrums everywhere when things didn't go his way and was incapable of showing gratitude where it was due.

Besides, Wei Wuxian was winning him a war, he was the main reason Yunmeng Jiang sect was able to recruit so many more disciples after and during the war (the book mentions that it was Wei Wuxian's the tales of exploits during that war that attracted disciples to Yunmeng Jiang sect), among many other things Wei Wuxian did for Jiang Cheng that Jiang Cheng did know about. Based on those points alone, anyone who had even a drop of leadership skills would treat Wei Wuxian with respect, dignity and grace. Any leader worth a damn would have valued Wei Wuxian and done his best to ensure his wellbeing, because Wei Wuxian's presence was good for the Jiang sect. Even Jin Guangyao mocked Jiang Cheng for being a a stupid and shitty leader and driving away his most powerful ally. The reason Jiang Cheng didn't value Wei Wuxian and instead lied to the leaders of the cultivation world saying that Wei Wuxian had declared himself the enemy of the cultivation world was jealousy (when all Wei Wuxian had agreed with for him to say was that he had left the Jiang sect, so Jiang Cheng was lying to both Wei Wuxian and the cultivation world, here).

Jiang Cheng felt inferior because Wei Wuxian was more talented, more charming, better looking, and a better leader than himself, and Jiang Cheng felt that he should be better because he was a sect heir and later a sect leader, and felt frustrated that everyone saw that Wei Wuxian was simply better than him. That's how the Jin sect manipulated Jiang Cheng, actually. They didn't threaten him, or blackmail him or anything of the sort. They just let Jiang Cheng listen to some people gossiping about how Wei Wuxian was so powerful and how he was more prominent that Jiang Cheng even though he was the son of servant who had no status. Gasp! And Jiang Cheng went ahead and turned against Wei Wuxian. Again, because Jiang Cheng was a jealous, entitled, bitter and angry fool.

None of that was on Wei Wuxian. Wei Wuxian didn't tell Jiang Cheng everything, but he had no obligation to bare his soul to him, and even if he had, it wouldn't have helped the situation because that wouldn't have changed what sort of person Jiang Cheng was. It didn't change Jiang Cheng's attitude later on. Like, even Jin Ling, an actual child, came to realize Jiang Cheng' attitude was wrong by the end of the novel. Jiang Cheng didn't need Wei Wuxian to bare his soul to him and tell him all his secrets. Jiang Cheng needed to grow the fuck up and learn the meaning of the word responsibility. Instead, he continued to act like a tantrum throwing child even as a grown ass man in his mid-thirties. That's actually embarrassing.

"jc didn't understand wwx".

no, and rightly so. because wwx decided to shut down completely and not let anyone know anything. that was his decision. because yes, we knew why wei wuxian did what he did and we understand him, but other people? other characters? they had no idea, not even the love interest knew what was going on with wwx. jiang cheng didn't knew shit nor did he have enough information until the very end of the story.

you can blame other characters for the decisions they made all you want, but don't pretend that wei wuxian's silence and stubbornness didn't influence these very decisions.

Wei Wuxian comes back from the Burial Mounds with the inability to lie. Somehow it seems to be a curse inflicted by Suibian- Sandu?- who is not amused by wwx's decision to just give his core away.

“You cannot do this to me,” Wei Wuxian hissed at his sword.

His sword did not respond.

This was not a surprise, since it was a sword, and yet Wei Wuxian was convinced that Suibian was to blame for his current dilemma. After all, what else could explain such a very specific issue tied directly to his golden core other than the only other thing he had allowed a direct tie into it?

Besides, everyone knew that spiritual weapons were temperamental, in need of careful care and consideration, and Wei Wuxian had, well, more or less done the one thing that meant he was going to have to give up using Suibian. It made sense that Suibian would be angry enough to curse him.

Also, when Jiang Cheng had handed him Suibian and their hands had been on it at the same moment, the sword – Wei Wuxian would swear – had very briefly vibrated, as if in response to a command.

And ever since then…

Well.

Listen, it’d be one thing if he walked out of the Burial Mounds without the ability to lie, okay? A weird churning compulsion to tell the truth, originating deep in his belly right where his golden core had once been before he’d given it up...yes, it would make sense. It would be – weird, incredibly so, but it wasn’t like his particular brand of demonic cultivation had much precedent, what with all the other variations involving a great deal more murdering people to harvest their power. Not to mention the whole idea of cultivating post-golden core; that wasn’t exactly something that had happened many times before!

So that would have made sense. Since it was new, it was reasonable that there would be side effects, even bizarre side effects.

It was not reasonable that the side effect in question – the inability to lie – had an area of impact that tied directly into the presence of one Jiang Cheng.

No Jiang Cheng? Wei Wuxian could be as free with the truth as he liked.

Jiang Cheng somewhere in the vicinity but not immediately present? He started tripping up on it. Strange restrictions appeared on his tongue, choking him; there seemed to be no logical sense to them or to the way they wove in and out of his speech, presumably depending on where Jiang Cheng was standing at any given moment. Why some exaggerations were acceptable while others were considered untruths and thus forbidden, Wei Wuxian had yet to figure out.

Jiang Cheng standing beside him?

It was time for Wei Wuxian to keep his mouth shut because every word that passed through his lips had to be weighed and found truthful as if he were standing before the judges of the dead.

That was all bad enough, of course, but recently even omissions had started burning at his lips, and that was just very much not on.

“It’s for his own good,” he argued, pleading, beseeching. “You can’t make me tell him. He would only be hurt if he knew!”

Suibian did not respond.

It was, after all, just a sword.

Even if it was currently behaving more like a backstabbing dagger.

(Nie Huaisang would have said that the sword wasn’t acting like anything at all.

Wei Wuxian had circuitously brought up the issue to him on one of his rare visits to the safe back line, reasoning out of sheer desperation that Nie Huaisang was the only person he knew that was gullible enough that he could tell the whole story to him without risking him figuring out the entire thing.

Nie Huaisang had laughed long and hard at it – Wei Wuxian couldn’t really blame him, since he’d claimed it was a story he’d seen in a play and if it had been happening in a play he would’ve found it funny, too – and then said that the playwright had missed the obvious answer: that it wasn’t the sword at all.

What could it be other than the sword, Wei Wuxian had asked.

It’s all in his mind, Nie Huaisang had said. He feels guilty, so he’s doing it to himself, and he’s blaming the sword because it’s the only other thing that he feels guilty towards. What else could it be?)

“Wei Wuxian!” Jiang Cheng called, and Wei Wuxian grimaced, hastily hiding Suibian away so that he could pretend to have forgotten it back at camp - so that no one would ask him to use it. He’d apologize to it later. “Are you ready to go?”

“Physically yes, emotionally no,” Wei Wuxian called back, and heard Jiang Cheng snort like a pig with amusement – at least someone was getting something out of this, and no, he wasn’t counting Nie Huaisang.

He didn’t especially want to go, didn’t want to have to be constantly on mental alert to make sure he didn’t blurt out something stupid and life-destroying, but what could he do about it? In the end, he went.

Jiang Cheng looped an arm over his shoulder. “More Wen sect to kill,” he said, briefly looking tough and serious and even, dare Wei Wuxian think it, manly, and then promptly ruined it by smirking at him with exactly the same sort of dumb face he’d used that one time they'd planned on slipping dye into the water Uncle Jiang used to use to wash his hair. “Emotionally ready for that?”

“Comparatively speaking, yes,” Wei Wuxian said.

Jiang Cheng shook his head. “I’m not going to ask what’s going on with you, because if you wanted me to know, you’d tell me,” he said, demonstrating surprising maturity, and possibly also the receipt of advice from the crumpled letter he’d shoved away half-hidden; Wei Wuxian wondered who Jiang Cheng was corresponding with that would dare give him advice like that. “But – you’ll tell me eventually, right?”

“Yes,” Wei Wuxian said impatiently, and then blinked, surprised at himself.

If he’d said it, here with Jiang Cheng so close, then it must be the truth.

He would tell him.

Maybe not immediately, but – eventually.

When he’d agreed to the golden core transfer, did all those things to keep the secret from Jiang Cheng, to make sure he didn’t know, he’d thought he’d take the secret to his grave. He wanted to. He still thought it would only hurt Jiang Cheng to know what he’d done – Jiang Cheng would take it all the wrong ways, doubt himself, blame himself, hurt himself, when all Wei Wuxian wanted was for him to be happy and healthy.

But – Suibian or no Suibian – he couldn’t lie right now.

And if he couldn’t…eventually, one day, Jiang Cheng would ask.

Something would happen.

He’d find out.

If he did it in an unguarded moment - when Wei Wuxian was drunk, perhaps, or over-tired after battle, or punch-drunk after a close encounter - that would be the worst possible thing. He wouldn’t be able to plan out how to phrase it or how to couch it or how to reassure him; it would be nothing but betrayed looks all the way down and Jiang Cheng storming away and all attendant disasters. He’d have to quit the Jiang sect and go live on a mountain out of sheer shame, and that sounded awful even if he could probably con one of those quiet-loves-solitude types like Lan Wangji into joining him. 

And so the only thing to do was…

“Hey, Jiang Cheng,” Wei Wuxian said. Attempt the impossible. “After the battle today, can we – talk?”

“Of course,” Jiang Cheng said, brightening up like the sunrise. “Any time.”

and i have to say op has reading comprehension for voicing out that the golden core issue shouldn't be about medical consent etc but how it was the result of jc & wwx's TOXIC relationship. because obviously how can anyone not point out how toxic jc is like he STRANGLED wwx and BLAMED wwx for the death of his parents. jfm and madam ew should know better that the wens could attack lotus pier anytime and that they're literally just waiting for an excuse to attack. jfm and madam ew had time to prepare, they should've known better when the NEUTRAL gusulan was burnt down by the wens 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

The "medical consent" thing has to be one of the dumbest arguments I've seen in this fandom and that's saying something... I absolutely agree that jc was a terrible person to have in one's life and should be avoided at all costs. I think it's important to remember though that the driving force behind WWX going through with the core transfer is that he'd promised JFM and YZY to take care of jc and jc had decided to unalive himself without his core. Likewise WWX doesn't tell him, not because he thinks jiang cheng would reject the core, but because he knows jc's competitive nature would make it hard for him to know where it came from.

"He wasn’t scared of death. He was only scared that after he died, he wouldn’t be able to save Jiang Cheng and betray the trust that Jiang FengMian and Madam Yu left him." (Chapter 60)

He remembered every single thing he promised Jiang FengMian and Madam Yu—to help and take care of Jiang Cheng. If someone as unhealthily competitive as him found out about this, he’d be dispirited his whole life, too tortured to face himself. There’d always be something he could never overcome, reminding him that he could only reach where he was because of another’s sacrifice. It wasn’t at all his cultivation and his achievement. No matter if he won or lost, he’d long since lost the right to compete. (Chapter 102)

It's not that WWX is insecure, or that he lurrrves jc so so much. In my opinion that diminishes how great his action was. He's driven by his morality, by his sense of duty, and the debt he felt towards JFM for taking him in to do this incredibly heroic, self sacrificing thing. Which is also how he tries to comfort himself whenever he starts to feel his loss too keenly:

The seventeen-to-eighteen-year-old Wei WuXian hadn’t been any less proud or competitive than Jiang Cheng. After all, he had been a prodigy once, gifted with exceptional talent. He could fool around all day, break curfew all night, and still perform way ahead of everyone else, including those who’d practiced and studied in earnest all day long. But whenever these thoughts plagued him during sleepless nights—that he would never again rise to the top using righteous, conventional practices, and that he would never again stun the world with his swordsmanship—he would instead imagine what would happen if Jiang FengMian had never brought him back to the Lotus Pier. Then, he might never have brushed shoulders with cultivation at all. He might never even know of the existence of this mystical, surreal world, and remained a street rat who only knew to run from dogs. Or he might have become a cattle herder who played flutes all day, stealing vegetables to scrape by. Either way, he wouldn’t have been trained in cultivation, and wouldn’t ever have formed a core to start with. Whenever he thought about it this way, he would feel much better.

Just pretend this to be a repayment, or an atonement. Pretend as if he never had the golden core to start with.

Once he’d said these things to himself enough times, he’d actually start to almost feel as unaffected about it as he was pretending to be. He could then even secretly praise himself a little for his at-least-half-genuine magnanimity.

But that was all a lifetime ago.

The point is that the core transfer is not about consent. It's certainly not about consent to jc. jc wants a core and gets a core. It's about WWX sticking to his morals and principles, no matter how little the reward and how hight the cost is to him. It's a very heroic sacrifice, and it looks very foolish when people try to twist it into something wrong or make jc a victim because it completely ignores the intention of the story.

The moment Wei Wuxian saw the theory on the golden core transfer was the moment he decided to use his own core to help Jiang Cheng.

But something stopped him.

It was a little faded, but in the corner was a note of how a core of different strength might not only fail to be transferred but also harm its recipient. It was an unproven theory, after all.

Wei Wuxian hesitated then. It was well known that he had always been stronger than Jiang Cheng. What if the strength of his core caused harm to Jiang Cheng?

He couldn’t allow that to happen. But what could he do? Jiang Cheng was wasting away and Wei Wuxian did not want him to get any worse.

What if you found someone willing? His mind whispered.

But he shook off the thought. Where would he find a willing transferee?

The Book of the Mind. His brain remembered absently. In the Lan library, there has been a book detailed with songs that could affect the mind. It even contained songs that could make a person pliant and willing.

Such thoughts made chills run down Wei Wuxian’s spine. How could he think of doing this to someone? Was he crazy?

Even if he did find someone, he couldn’t pick from any Wen stationed here in Yiling. Wen Qing would find out about it. He also needed to find someone of similar strength to Jiang Cheng.

Wei Wuxian worried his bottom lip with his teeth. And then made up his mind.

He changed his clothes and hairstyle and informed Wen Qing that he’ll be careful. He’s just going on a night hunt.

Wen Qing looked suspicious but acquiesced as long as Wei Wuxian didn’t bring any trouble to them.

Wei Wuxian understood her worries and waved them off. He can be careful if he tries.

So he left.

Wen Qing was wary when Wei Wuxian had left on a supposed night hunt despite the ailing condition of his brother. Especially considering how Wei Wuxian had been looking at her golden core transfer theory.

She was worried but nevertheless could do nothing about it. As long as Wei Wuxian didn’t bring harm onto her or her brother, she didn’t care what he would do.

(Though, she would come to regret this line of thought soon.)

Wei Wuxian returned and with him, a strange young man who seemed……odd, somehow.

“Wen-guniang.” The strange young man bowed. “Wei-gongzi has informed me of his plan to help his brother and I am willing to transfer my golden core to him.”

Wen Qing was dumbfounded. “Wha—” She wasn’t expecting this. “Why?” She asked carefully.

“I owe Wei-gongzi a life debt. And besides, I don’t want to be involved with the cultivation world anymore. This would kill two birds with one stone.”

Wen Qing glanced at the man and Wei Wuxian, who had been staring off strangely in the distance. “You are aware that this is an unproven theory, an untested surgery, yes?”

“Yes. Wei-gongzi has informed me.”

“Wen Qing, please.” Wei Wuxian spoke up. “Jiang Cheng can’t last…..”

“I…..no. Wei Wuxian and this…..gongzi. I am a healer. And I am unwilling to perform such a dangerous procedure that could possibly take your life. I can’t use anesthetics. It would interfere with the golden core.” With that, she stood up and walked out, the feeling of wrongness emanating from that young man not leaving her mind.

Where did Wei Wuxian even find someone like that?

In the end, after a day and a half of begging, Wen Qing crumbled and agreed to the procedure. Wei Wuxian then fed Jiang Cheng a lie about Baoshan Sanren helping him and they were all off to a nearby mountain.

The procedure was a success. Wei Wuxian breathed a sigh of relief. And the young man who offered his core survived too, but just barely.

It’s too bad, Wei Wuxian had thought. After all, that young man he had brought was one of the Wens that had raided Lotus Pier with Wen Chao. It was a surprise to see that guy nearby by but Wei Wuxian had taken a chance and used that song to make him pliant. After checking his core to see whether it was as strong as Jiang Cheng’s, he quickly fed lies to the young man’s mind.

Wei Wuxian was relieved to have seen that everything went smoothly. Though now, he had to somehow get rid of the man. Hmm, perhaps through an unfortunate night hunt? That was something to think of later.

For now, Wei Wuxian needed to get both him and Jiang Cheng to Meishan.

To be fair, while I do think JC consented to core transfer, I don't think he was someone who would find inconsistencies in a lie and put them together, he wanted a core, it didn't matter how and or who gave it, just having been told he'd be able to cultivate again he started eating and drinking again. I think at that time WWX could've said 'I found this ritual that can let you cultivate again' and the result would be the same, because how it happened didn't matter either to JC. The consent jc gave however is not in that, it was also not in taking WWX's 'favour' (in his pov) , the consent was when he agreed to wear a blindfold (won't know who would be doing the procedure) when he agreed to not ask questions (how it happened) and when he agreed to take up WWX's name and identity. He agreed to an unknown procedure that would give him the chance to cultivate again, WWX didn't lie about that, if we want to count a lie WWX did tell was that it would be the implication baoshan sanren would be the person doing it but even by that, blindfold means it could be anyone under bssr who did the surgery, not about the core itself. I feel the main argument against this is 'but he didn't consent to WWX's core" to which, its odd because that was not even a question? It's an unasked question 'do you want wwx's core?' it was never asked, we can make assumptions whether he'd refuse it or accept it, but since that question wasn't asked we can't say 'jc didn't consent to WWX's core or jc consented to WWX's core' Yea JC didn't consent to WWX's core, but he also didn't reject it either? Because that was not asked? He wanted a core, there wasn't a list of rejections who he wouldn't accept it from? This isn't even an argument in the context of the novel itself. I hate applying modern comparisons considering a golden core is not an organ or something without which a person would die, but since every argument that says jc didn't consent applies modern ethics its like, even from that perspective, if two characters were on the run, character 2 needed a kidney and character 1 said 'yea there is this place i remember vaguely as a child they'll be able to give you one, but you have to pretend to be me and wear a blindfold' character 2 agreed, and received a kidney, finds out years later the kidney was character 1's. Maybe if character 2 knew things would go differently, but in the circumstances it did happen, it wasn't without his consent, he wasn't tied down and given a new kidney, and by modern law the donors right to remain anonymous is very protected, the donor doesn't have to disclose anything they don't want to? So the question of but 'he didnt consent to character 1's kidney' or Jc didn't consent to WWX's core is so odd. And like look at JC's reaction to finding out, he doesn't think even remotely how he wouldn't accept it or why wasn't he told it's WWX's core because he'd reject it or something, but mad he wouldn't be able to compete with WWX any longer because its his core giving him the power to cultivate.

If I see the ridiculous argument that WWX was bad for not giving JC a choice in the golden core transfer I'm just going to round everyone up and force them to read the novel properly - curing you of your stupidity, clockwork orange style.

There are two ways in which he may have consented, depending on which way you want to believe JC acted, but he very much gave consent either way.

So WWX tells JC he knows where Baoshan Sanren is... You think JC is that DUMB he believes this?! You think the fact WWX knew he had a lifeline the whole time he was starving and fighting for his life on the street, he never once thought - I know, I'll go see Baoshan Sanren, she'll look after me. Or the whole time he was being treated like a lowly servant and whipped for the most insignificant of reasons?! Give me a break!!!

JC either knew this was a total lie and did not ask questions, because he wanted a golden core and he did not want to consider how, who or why. This was consent. WWX fed him a story that was obviously a lie and JC did not point this out - he just took it, because he was desperate to have power once more. He did not give a 💩 where it came from or any real details. THAT'S CONSENT.

And if you think that JC is stupid enough to believe the glaringly obvious lie, then he still consented in taking something from WWX either way. How? Hmmm well JC took the only thing WWXs mother ever left him, her own son, to use if he should need it. He took it with a second thought, without any hesitation for taking something so precious and poignant to WWX. Something that was not his to take. He took it without any humility or grace, without a single word of thanks to WWX. He posed as the very boy his vile mother abused, he posed as the son of the very woman his jealous mother hated - all without any shame. He was greedy and had no thought for WWX. He consented in taking something so precious, it might as well have been his golden core either way.

So either way, WWX received consent from JC.

You CAN have scraps of an emotionally resonant idea that I’m also never going to write, though: what if Wen Ning escaped Jin captivity sometime during those 13 years, maybe just after they put the nails in? Idk, something’s gotta prompt it. Maybe they put hte nails in and try to take him out for a murderous test drive. But he escapes...and is promptly found and captured by Jiang Cheng and YunmengJiang?

not very much of YunmengJiang. this is going to be very secret, when we lock the Ghost General in the basement seal the Ghost General in Lotus Pier’s deepest, darkest dungeon

(it’s not very deep, though maybe it’s dark. Each of the like 3 max cells IS floodable - very deliberately, at the will of whoever has the magical keys to the talisman seal connecting the cells to the lake, which has been used for torture in the past. Equally of-course, this is no concern for a dead man.)

if there’s nails in his head, Jiang Cheng takes them out - maybe not immediately, but pretty damn soon, because how else can he yell at him properly? How else can he demand answers as to what the hell Wei Wuxian thought he was doing, in those last few months? How else can he wander down with a bottle of wine at 3am one night (multiple nights) because it’s this or nightmares, and shout at the dead man chained to the wall, because it’s not the dead man he wants but it’s the closest he has?

sometimes, in hte early days, when he’s being deliberate and cold rather than visibly slightly unhinged by loss, he brings Chenqing as well, and it’s just a bit of a threat because...the Tiger Seal couldn’t command Wen Ning to do anything he didn’t want it to, or rather, it could command him, but he didn’t have to listen nor obey. Even with the nails in his head, the Tiger Seal had no part in the making of him as he is now - Wei Wuxian made damn sure of that - so there were no nasty little puppet strings built in for it to yank.

Chenqing, however...the Ghost Flute Chenqing, carved from the resentment-rich bamboo of the Burial Mounds, isn’t as strong as the Tiger Seal, but it is a cultivation tool in its own right, and it very much did play a part in the making of Wen Ning as he is now. If anything save Wei Wuxian himself could direct the Ghost General against his will, it would be that dizi.

Jiang Cheng never plays it, though. Twirls it, maybe. Threatens to break it in half over his knee. Hits Wen Ning with it in a fit of temper

Wen Ning is definitely capable of breaking those chains and whatever other suppression/binding/etc talismans they put on him. But he also...doesn’t really have anywhere else to go. Everyone he loves is dead. And at least Jiang Wanyin is only using him for weird stupid therapy, instead of cutting him open and trying to replicate the Yiling Patriarch’s work.

That said, this goes on for like a month maximum before Wen Ning snaps and tells Jiang Cheng about the golden core transfer

"Ohhhh my god oh my god he didn't choose us over you! He gave you everything he could POSSIBLY give and then tried to do ONE decent human thing instead of, I don't know, sit by and watch innocent people who'd helped you be killed!"

Jiang Cheng, skipping with skill over the back half of that: Like hell he gave me everything! He-- 

Wen Ning, ruthlessly: Whose golden core is in your chest?

JC, already understanding because all the puzzle pieces are THERE, but he doesn't have to put them together if he doesn't want to: I- mine! Baoshan Sanren-- 

WN: My sister, Wen Qing, the greatest healer in QishanWen, cut Wei Wuxian's golden core out of him and put it in you. He had to be awake through the whole thing or it wouldn't work. You didn't. I held him down while he screamed.

JC: He-- 

WN: There was only a 50% chance that he'd survive, but he insisted. For you. And YunmengJiang. Everything you've done since then has been with his help

(and at another time, those words would land differently - and they land a little bit that way, because Jiang Cheng has Neuroses. But...maybe the difference isn't that it's framed a little differently, or that instead of a confrontation after a long day, it's 3am and Jiang Cheng woke up muffling a scream for his brother. Maybe the difference is just that Wei Wuxian isn't here to be furious at, so Jiang Cheng gets caught up in the very first step of finding him again: relief so bone-deep it aches, and guilt so gut-wrenching that he nearly collapses from the pain)

WN: So please shut the fuck up and get over yourself, and leave me alone

Jiang Cheng does come back the next night, or more likely the next day, and yell at him some more about it. (This is good - he may not have Wei Wuxian to yell at, but he has someone, which means he won’t just descend into an inescapable pit of self-loathing over this, which I AM convinced would happen otherwise if JC found out about the golden core while WWX was dead.) 

There’s a lot of shouting. Only by the grace of decent dungeon soundproofing and several competent YunmengJiang disciples does the Ghost General in the basement remain secret

Jin Ling, for instance, is extra super not allowed to know, for everyone’s emotional health

Jin Guangyao also never finds out, because I don’t think him knowing would matter - he’d probably leave it unless he needed tomake political hay of it, and he wouldn’t before canon kicks back into gear - and it’s much funnier if he’s just anxious about the missing Ghost General for the better part of a decade

Wen Ning ends up staying in the basement, though possibly not in (completely useless) chains - depends on how petty...they both are, really. But he stays because, again: where else is there for him to go? He’s not hunted, here. He’s not causing anyone trouble. And if Wei Wuxian could see this situation, all their family of blood and hardship dead and gone except this one, Wen Ning is sure that Wei Wuxian would ask him with his final breath to watch over Lotus Pier and the people he, Wei Wuxian, never stopped counting as family. So at least that’s something that feels...almost useful.

Anyway, and then one day Wei Wuxian claps his hands and calls for corpses, and Wen Ning hears and very politely breaks the door off his cell, maybe even resets it on its hinges, and sneaks out. He doesn’t leave a note, even though he and Jiang Cheng are, like...very begrudging friends/companions in mourning by now. He’ll figure it out.

Restless Rewatch: The Untamed Episode 14 first part

Murder Turtle, Continued

Lan Wangji wakes up after a good night's sleep leaning against a rock wall, to find that his leg is no longer splinted, and his perfectly clean and unbloody headband has been put back on his head while he was sleeping.

Leaving aside the "not waking up" part of things, how, exactly, did Wei Wuxian get his headband on without mussing his hair? Did he bring a crochet hook?

Wei Wuxian gives him a sitrep and then they cozy up and have an extended conversation about the nature and history of the Tortoise of Slaughter. Wei Wuxian is interested in everything Lan Wangji has to say, and Lan Wangji talks a lot more than usual; they are completely on the same wavelength here and are enjoying swapping obscure knowledge.

Lan Wangji: My lacerated leg and I are actually super aware that it has big teeth, but thanks for the reminder.

In the course of the conversation, Wei Wuxian mentions his plan to 1. sneak into the tortoise's shell and 2. drive it out of its shell so they can attack it. 

OP did a little tortoise research and learned that the only species of turtle that can leave its shell is the Koopa Troopa.

Good news for Wei Wuxian: If you jump on its shell in the right spot, you can rack up a pile of extra lives.

Does that make the Tortoise of Slaughter a giant Koopa Troopa? Perhaps...the king of the Koopa Troopas?

I'm gonna say yes.

Let’s Go Killing

Wei Wuxian is exhilarated by the idea of fighting a giant dangerous monster with Lan Wangji. Some day Wei Wuxian will found the Nike clan, because his motto is definitely "Just do it." 

It's sweet how, in his romantic notions about chivalry and Lan Wangji, he's completely elided the original reason they were (sort of) told to venture together. 

Wei Wuxian: I'm still on the "find the Yin Iron" quest; I'm just skipping the "suppress it" part.  

Wei Wuxian weighs up their chances against Bowser and tells Lan Wangji that even if they die, it will be badass to be killed by a famous monster, so they won't have to feel embarrassed.

This is the exact moment that Lan Wangji's feelings for Wei Wuxian go from "smitten" to "gagging for it."

Lan Wangji: as soon as we get out of here I'm going to borrow a whole lot of books from Nie Huaisang

The boys come up with a plan that involves a rather long montage of collecting archery equipment and deconstructing it. This potentially-dull montage is fun to watch because they are both very, very good looking.

Artists who want to draw Wang Yibo as an elven archer, this is your episode.

Now we suddenly have, with zero explanation, telepathy. Ok, sure. It seems to work kind of like a phone conversation, in which they say specific things to each other, rather than like Cherry Magic telepathy where you can hear everything the other person is thinking. Or at least, neither of them is embarrassed, so I assume they are maintaining some mental privacy.

Club Ruohan

Same, Wen Chao, same

At some point there is a boring sequence at Club Ruohan.  Wen Ruohan doesn't know where Xue Yang is, but really wants his hunk of Yin Iron. Wen Chao thinks that WRH's 3 pieces of Yin Iron should be able to beat Xue Yang's 1 piece, but apparently he is dumb and that is not how math works. O...kay? OP does not understand this either but whatever, Wen Ruohan is boring, moving on. This scene is really just here to make us think about Yin Iron before Wei Wuxian jumps into Bowser's shell.

Bigger On The Inside

So then Wei Wuxian climbs into Bowser's shell, which is, to quote The 12th Doctor, bigger on the inside.

Bowser’s shell is the approximate size of my entire house. It is also bathed in a hellish pure red photo filter, which OP has done her best to remove for these gifs, because it gives me eye strain and it obscures Xiao Zhan's hotness.

Camera Operator: What did I do? 

Wei Wuxian wanders around inside, finding random corpses encased in slime cocoons. Tortoise, spider, xenomorph, whatever. There are also random curtain things hanging all over, and then at one point Wei Wuxian stares into the face of a corpse, and then does a jump scare response at the camera operator even though nothing particular happened. 

I imagine the corpse was supposed to open its eyes and say "killl meeee" but it got censored. He also makes about 8 other faces at the camera operator, so we get that the inside of this TARDIS-like tortoise shell (must...resist...temptation...to...say...TORDIS) is yucky.

Lan Wangji waits outside listening to Wei Wuxian telepathically complain about the smell.  He is anxiously clenching a bundle of string and an arrow, and wishing he could clench Wei Wuxian Bichen instead.

Serendipitous Yin Iron

Wei Wuxian backs his way through the TORDIS until his butt bumps into a sword that is steaming with resentful energy. That's right: Wei Wuxian is about to pull a piece of Yin Iron almost literally out of his ass.

He grabs it and is overwhelmed by its screaming resentful energy and has to let it go again.

So this is what a vibrator with 4 batteries feels like

When Bowser comes looking for him, however, he quickly decides to go for it, grabbing the sword and singing "I've Got the Power (Gonna Make You Sweat)"

Wei Wuxian plunges the sword into Bowser's lower jaw, and Bowser pulls his entire head out of his shell with Wei Wuxian attached, while leaving the rest of his body and all rational laws of physics inside the shell.

Gamera Versus the Cultivators

What follows is one of the more ridiculous action sequences in the history of the world, and I say that as someone who likes Mothra movies. 

Wei Wuxian hovers in a perfect horizontal plank while “hanging from” the sword, which is held well below the level of his torso. While Bowser spins him around. For much of the time, Bowser keeps his head still and just waves his neck around.

Lan Wangji and the camera operator do everything they possibly can to make "guy pulls on string" look interesting. 

Everybody tries really, really hard and the actors are great at pretending something is there when it isn't, but this whole sequence is just horribly conceived.

What works well, though, is the Yin energy and Wei Wuxian's wrangling of it. He starts off being frightened and overwhelmed, and looking like it's too much for him; I dont' know if they made his face puffy on purpose or if that's just what happens when you spend days hanging from the ceiling fighting an imaginary monster. But he looks slack and unwell as he grapples with the iron sword.

Which makes this moment, when he gets control of it, deliciously creepy. He uses the power of the Yin Iron to stick a bunch of pokey things into Bowser's neck.

Lan Wangji has seen him struggling and now sees him...not struggling. Which scares the piss out of him, and he moves to finish the fight as quickly as possible, slicing up his hand and breaking the string. Combined with the pokey things, this does the trick and Bowser dies while Wei Wuxian faints and falls into the water.

Do the Whumpty Whump

Lan Wangji rescues him and wakes him up, and Wei Wuxian clutches the Yin Iron sword and tells Lan Wangji that he was knocked out by the screaming of disembodied voices.

This certainly sounds like a strange and dangerous phenomenon, so Lan Wangji carefully asks him to explain everything.

Ha ha ha j/k. Lan Wangji asks him exactly nothing about the strange sword or the black smoke or his weird evil smile or his new power over pointy objects. Lan Wangji appears to have a Star Trek: TNG level of unconcern about strange phenomena happening directly under his nose. But in fact he has noticed what's up, which is why he will be instantly distressed when he sees Wei Wuxian's flute moves at the Wen Corporate Headquarters.

Wei Wuxian has a fever (stay positive test negative) and comments on Lan Wangji's being so nice to him.
