how to make cool blobby turing patterns in photoshop

i'll preface with i learned the basic loop from skimming a tutorial on youtube, but as someone who prefers written tutorials i'm sure many would appreciate one! also, the second part of this is some of the visual effects i figured out on my own using blending modes and stuff.

i'm using photoshop CS4 on a mac so some buttons and stuff might be in different places on windows and newer photoshop versions but all the actions are the same. my canvas is 1000x1000 pixels.

it's possible to do something similar in krita using this plugin, made by the love @arcaedex

it's also possible to do this in photopea, a free browser alternative to photoshop! the results are pretty much identical.

FIRST off you wanna get or make a black and white image of some kind. it has to be one layer. can be noise, a photo, a bunch of lines, whatever. here's mine, just some quick airbrush lines:

now find the actions tab. idk what it looks like in newer versions of photoshop but you probably won't need to dig!

hit the little page thingy to make a new pattern. once you hit 'record', it'll record everything you do. the little square 'stop' icon will end it.

now you want to do a high pass filter. you can mess around with the radius to change the size of your squiggles, but the tutorial had it set to 6. experiment!

now add the 'threshold' adjustment layer. i use the adjustments tab but i think there's also a dropdown menu somewhere. keep it at the default, 128. merge it down. (control or command + E or you can right click it like some kind of weirdo)

and finally, the gaussian blur! the radius of this affects the shape and size of your squiggles as well. i like to keep it around 4.5 but you can mess around with that too.

after that, hit 'stop' on the action you're recording, and then repeat it a bunch of times using the 'play' button, until you have something you like, like this:

WOW!! that was fun!! and only a little tedious thanks to the power of macros. anyway, here's some fun layer blending stuff i like to do. it's with a different pattern cause i made this bit first.

anyway, using a black and white gradient (or a grey base that you do black and white airbrush on), make a layer with the vivid light. this will make the blobs look thicker or thinner.

then, for cool colors, do a gradient map adjustment layer over that:

and finally, my best friend, the overlay layer. just using a gradient here bc i'm lazy, but feel free to experiment with brushes, colors, and blending modes!

NOW GO. MAKE COOL SHIT WITH THE POWER OF MATH. AND SEND IT TO ME

also these are not hard and fast rules PLEASE mess around with them to see what kind of weird shit you can make. here's a gif. as you can see i added some random airblush blobs in the middle of it, for fun.

theres a youtube channel profiting off and lying about ai art and it's pissing me off

@/tendofarms on youtube uses ai art in the thumbnails and videos of their animal crossing compilation videos, claims it to be made by them despite also giving credit to a @/lumasi.png on instagram, who claims it's "a comission." this art is also being sold on merch on the channel's etsy account.

They haven't posted a video in 2 months but to see that they've made money through this scheme really pisses me off. Also the fact that they're attempting to decieve people by creating a fake artist on instagram who posts the ai art. They've attempted to say the art is a blend of original art made in photoshop/illustrator as well as the help of ai art. I dont believe this is true and im going to show your asses why

"my normal workflow so far has been to paint backgrounds, then get Ai to help with character design, i bring to photoshop to select my favorites, and put together something from my personal painting combined with my favorite Ai characters. Hope this clears things up :D"

The reason this particular post stands out to me is because in the DESCRIPTION of this video, they say the art was made by @lumasi.png on instagram. So when i go to their account and find this art, i see this

so, ok. was it a commission or did tendyfarms make it using a lot of illustrator/photoshop work. and if they ARE two different people.. wow their styles are so similar thats crazy /sarcastic as fuck

I would also like to point out that @/lumasi.png's first post, one that isnt featured in a tendyfarms video, also reeks of ai.

But maybe this isnt a big issue. Their etsy after all only shows that theyve made 16 sales, and their most popular views sit around 100k views, which probably isnt enough to even earn a stable living from, so who cares.

Just. as someone who listens to a lot of music from youtube mixes/compilations, who also makes art, i feel it's really fucking disrespectful to try and claim art as your own in a space where i go to try and relax or find new musical artists. and it's fucking rampant! i have to check each mix to see if using ai for the art, which i can only really see if i click on the video, giving them a small boost in stats. And if they arent using ai art? theyre probably stealing the art directly from an artist and not giving proper credit. Forget about asking the artist for permission, it's not like countless youtubers have explained how thumbnails are The Most important element of a video. Just go ahead and take someone else's work to give yourself some cash.

I know tumblr users hate generative ai already, but i'd just like to give a little attention to what youtube looks like, and to try and ask for more vigilance, more comments calling out the bullshit. I dont see a lot of comments at all on tendofarm's posts! or any mention of ai can be brushed away with "oh i used ai as well as drawing it myself" :/ you didnt buddy. you just didnt do that.

Idk what the right thing to do is, report their etsy? report their youtube? does either company care? maybe you can tell me

but i should probably say dont harass them. as much as i would like to. just try your best not to give retention to videos that shamelessly and ile about ai. Really look at the videos, really scrutinize if you can spare the time to. thanks

Seeing your art on my dash literally nakes my month oh my god so beautiful and stylish!!!

Idk if you've discussed this, but how do you find such cohesive and vibrant color palettes for big pieces?

Oh wow got to ask the hard questions huh. Lol I don't think I've talking about this. Becuase it's hard to articulate. A lot of what I do in art is just trial and error. I don't have a set formula or pretext color palettes for each mood or setting (tho I really should would save me a lot of time)

I mainly mess around with a ton of color layers in Photoshop on various blending modes at various opacity levels add in adjustment layers (mostly Selective Color) and play around with the values of the file and I let my artist intuition lead me to the atmosphere I'm trying to portray.

Here's a snapshot of just how many I used to get to the base color scheme for my Mueasume picture. ( and I used more later on in the piece.)

But I know that doesn't help you so here are some tips.

Know your mood and your setting for your piece (Time, Weather, Indoor Outdoor, Sad, Happy, Angry, etc.)

Learn the color language for each mood and setting Pintrest is great for this. Make some boards.

If your colors are not cohesive and you working digitally make a new layer Fill that layer with whatever color is the main mood of your piece (red for anger blue for sad etc.) and set that layer to like 50% opacity and then just go down the list of your layer options until you find something you like.

You can repeat this step with other layers and become the basket case like me and also have 20+ layers in your file lol.

You could add a color fill layer set it to Hue, flatten the image, then cut that whole image revert back to before you made the color fill layer paste your monochrome picture on top of your original piece, and then play with the monochrome layer on different layer settings and opacity

And if you have the option to use Selective Color do it and play with the sliders. The ability to tone down a hue in each value is a game changer.

You can also use Hue and Saturation tho you need a light hand if you're going to play with this setting.

my account name for ig back then was dagashimanga/honokasmanjuu. i really just wanted an account to share my love live obsession with and shitpost.

if you were around back then, you remember the most famous love live confessions account on ig and all the DRAMA it came with. like so so much went down there it was hilarious. anyway, i was friends with one of the admins, her user was christmas.eli.

she was like one of my first internet friends. i live in germany and she lived in france, so sometimes we’d talk like the whole night. we were super close.

until… KAYLEE happened.

now, if you were around back then… you know who tf that is!! it was a (presumably) 10-13 year old girl who would have tons of accounts (talking 20+), all very girly and feminine, super pink, etc. she would either wanna be your friend or hate you to death, and often times when you wouldn’t become her friend or wouldn’t do the right thing, she’d hate you, stalk you, harass you, everything. blocking her didn’t work.

so, one day, i was her victim. idk how it started, but something set her off. she harassed me, texted me, created an account called honokasmanjuuu and copied my posts word for word lmao

a few days later, i took a nap and woke up to see my ig BLOWING up. what the hell happened? well, kaylee fabricated a screenshot of the worst thing you could do in the love live fandom: scam someone of their sif account. she sent it to the love live confessions account for awareness, and guess who approved and posted it? my dear christmas.eli!

my account was full of people telling me how horrible i am, how i deserve to die, etc. people found my private, real life account, commenting there, using my pictures and spreading them (mind you i was 14), telling me how ugly i am, how ugly my art is, even photoshopping me on a pig lmao

i texted christmas.eli and told her it was fake and asked her why she would do this to me instead of talking to me first. she absolutely hated me and told me to block her. my irl best friend (to this das mwuah) even tried explaining it to her but she didn’t want to hear any of it. the bullying got so bad, i deactivated any accounts i had — it was full on cyber bullying. i couldn’t listen or watch anything love live related because it was so traumatizing at the time.

i created new accounts, where one girl even texted me, and after talking to her she trusted me and felt sorry for me, before also turning on me and telling the confessions account my new user. i quickly deleted the account and started anew, without anyone except my irl friends and like 2-3 mutuals.

funny thing though: my new account actually grew quite a bit, and one day, christmas.eli followed me even. nobody knew who i really was because i kept private information at bay and started using an internet name (which, to this day!!, is ria ♡). and… i actually became her friend again, acting like i was someone else lmao.

Was curious, do you have like a price range in mind for how much Solar's parts (or any of their parts) cost or is it just kinda up to interpretation? Idk I just always wondered how expensive it was 'cause I was like well considering all the sensors and other robotics in it it prob gets pretty pricey to buy. Although maybe the price isn't as high 'cause it seems to be a common thing added to robots, so maybe high demand drives the price down

Wow... yeah I think I want to keep that fuzzy. I can maybe give you a range of what's more expensive and what isn't, sort of? Because the DCA is an older model and I don't have a good sense as to whether that would make the parts harder to get, or if Fazbear would make sure they stayed in small batch production. [Likely] Also if it would mean that the parts themselves were simpler/cheaper to make because they're less sophisticated? We know from TSAMS that Sun and Moon have much smaller hard drives then Earth at least. And specifically for EMHM; the blue-screening/crash and restart that happens when things get too intense is a function of the old software. They have plenty of case sensors but too many of them going off at once is overwhelming. It's like trying to play a video, download something, and simultaneously use photoshop on a 5000x3000 pixel image while using Win95 on a really old laptop. They can't always handle it. They're also not getting regular software updates anymore unless Moon is the one doing it. Eclipse's are particularly vulnerable to viruses and crashing because they often don't take good care of themselves. [Self-loathing, self-destructive behavior. Hence why Lunar/Monty was able to give Eclipse a malware virus while he was still in Sun.] But the actual dicks and sleeves would be modular for other types of anamatronic frames. Last night was the most fun I've had in ages! Between the Oscars and the Kensington Palace nightmare, it was truly my superbowl but like my superbowl this year if you were a Swifty who lives in Kansas City. Just a night tailor made for me.

Here are my thoughts!

Kp press officer should be fired. They should know better than to release a photoshopped image without disclosing it. Like, that's the scandal. The photoshop isn't hiding anything, the trees are actually green, charlotte isn't wearing two different shoes-- they seem to have replaced Charlotte probably to just get a photo with a good smile from everyone. But when you're releasing a photo to stop speculation, you just have to do better! it's gotta be impeccable! loved kate's super passive aggressive "hope everyone had a nice mother's day" in her statement.

I think Oppenheimer won exactly what it should have (except for RDJ, which just... the academy needs to look to younger men. They love a starlet and hate a ... baby star man, idk, we don't even have a word for it. But they just hate nominating younger men and giving them awards even less!) It won a lot but largely in technical categories, which is where it excelled. That was fine!

The more I think about American Fiction, the angrier I get? I don't like that it was only partially a story about making black stories interesting for white people, and sold as ENTIRELY a story that would make it seem interesting for white people. The very best part of the movie was a domestic drama about an upper class black family that was struggling to be accepted by the mainstream. But like, the family drama was it! I didn't like how it was sold (but would white people watch a black family domestic drama? truly don't know!) and I don't think it should have been awarded for that, as much as I really liked huge parts of the movie and also Cord Jefferson's speech.

Emma was great, I wish Lily had won, I think Lily feels more like the center of the movie than the star of it, and the oscars love a physical performance. SHOW ME YOU'RE ACTING, either by portraying a real person or by using your body in weird and wacky ways. Ok!

I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how messi clapped and I saw a bts clip and it was his back paws and also was pre-taped.

Fashion didn't wow me but it's not really a Fashion night (outside of Colman and Sandra), it's a Glamour night, and there was plenty of that. I have the Met Gala and Cannes to look forward to Fashion.

Genuinely can't believe that Killers of the Flower Moon was a total shut out. It seemed like a masterpiece to me. What did I see that other people didn't get??

Overall it was a great oscars. Even without a ton of tension there were nice bits and good songs and it moved quickly and none of the technical categories felt draggy and it was just a lot of fun!

I've been into the ARG/Unfiction genre since like. 2015. And literally I've understood the hype around almost every unfiction project to some degree, EXCEPT for Mandela catalogue. Like. I've never understood the hype. Maybe it's just because I found it to feel very formulaic but like. Some of the faces used for this that are meant to be slightly unsettling are just,, not perfectly proportional and are badly lit?? Like literally that's it. Like there are real people who look like that. Fix the lighting and it's just gonna look like your neighbor of something. It's not very scary

But also like, for real? On your points abt how the series itself gives off A Lot if proto-fascistic messaging,

when I first watched it I was like "oh! That's the point! This is abt how fascist governments use media like TV to influence and misinform the public in service to facism and paranoia. Like these doppelgangers aren't actually real! They're just made up boogiemen to incentivize the public to turn on their neighbors/to attack people who are disfigured or disabled" and I thought that I finally was maybe getting why people found it interesting and that I had judged it too harshly

And then it wasn't that and instead was like "yeah no. There IS a secret boogeyman group who aren't (side eye to that) who are gonna steal your children via television (even Bigger side eye), and nearly off of them are just like, slightly photoshopped pictures of Real People but now they're just disfigured/disabled/literally just slightly non proportional features

This series could be very cool, but its just a thematic mess and is (intentionally or not) communicating a lot of facistic/eugenic sentiments

whenever me & my friend talk about it we somehow manage to keep tripping into different kinds of bigotry!! we'll be talking about ableism and how Adam's arc is very similar to many changeling tropes, which were (and to some extent still are, see: Star Children/Indigo Children) often used to abuse neurodivergent or mentally ill/disabled children. and we'll realize that Adam arc ALSO mirrors the Tragic Mulatto storyline too and it's like wow!! Two in one! you've done it so bad!!

a lot of the issues with it are small little things that could be excused as a coincidence- EXCEPT THERE'S SO MANY LITTLE THINGS THAT IT BECOMES IMPOSSIBLE TO IGNORE.

ranking the red velvet album covers, be warned this’ll be long

28 reasons very visually pleasing. the red and the black go so well together and the mirror showing seulgi is just creative genius. absolute fav, i could stare at it forever to be honest. not to mention it perfectly reflects the album’s contents which is a huge bonus for me

the red summer i have a huge soft spot for covers with a lot going on actually. the cover’s fun, very summer and even with vibrant colors that would normally clash in the real world, it’s somehow satisfying. i love all of the details too and the way the members are positioned on the cover. so fun

rbb the positioning of the members + the teeth is just fun to see. it’s definitely different from a lot of their other covers which makes it more interesting for me as well. i also just really like their outfits, especially yeri’s

chill kill what’s funny to me about this one is the fact it’s photoshopped like omg they couldn’t even get an ot5 pic wow. but i like the overall vibe of it a lot and it’s a drastic change from red velvet’s typical colorful covers, which also makes this one stand out to me. i also am just a huge fan of this album anyway and think the feeling of it was perfectly executed which obviously extends to the cover since that plays a huge role in the concept anyway

perfect velvet okay actually this used to my favorite album, cover, concept, etc… it’s definitely their prettiest & most visually interesting, but i’ve grown. it’s still really cool and my fav part is the incorporation of the title but i don’t think it’s their absolute best cover regardless of its quality and general appeal LOL. it’s been a bit overdone i think? still a huge fav tho

reve festival is actually not in order of how i’d rank the covers because i have a more pressing criticism regarding the overall trilogy’s design

they’re all meant to be connected, yet finale is randomly like. SO different. it doesn’t even have a rollercoaster that connects through it the way day 1 and day 2 have… sm paid for a cover to be made and couldn’t scrounge up a couple more pennies for a damn rollercoaster 😭 i just hate that disconnect so much because they’re literally MEANT TO GO TOGETHER and they already did that for 2/3 of the albums so idk why finale’s suddenly different. ugh

anyway, onto the actual ranking:

finale it’s the most creative and very cute. i love the house details w the velvets inside + one trapped under the house, as well as the surroundings. typically not a fan of green but this shade is pleasing to my eyes

day 2 the purple is very beautiful especially when combined with the red of the rollercoaster. the “events” on the cover are also really cutely designed and it def appeals to me a lot

day 1 my main complaint is the yellow. i hate the color yellow and this shade in particular is offensive to my eyes. i like the rest of the cover though which is a shame… but that’s why it’s so high for me; everything BUT the background color is great. it’s fun

rookie it’s very eye catching, the blue is wonderful and the positioning of the titles as well as the members is creative and i like it a lot. also having seulgi in the middle is another part i enjoy, simply because she has an interesting pose and i feel like it tells you a lot about the album’s sound

cosmic the album’s so vibrant and dreamy yet this cover represents none of that. i don’t get that feeling from this photo at all, not to mention the logo’s just slapped on there. i love the mysterious hotel concept but it was poorly executed which is why the cover falls flat for me despite it utilizing one of my fav parts of the concept… and tbh idk why they didn’t do something more similar to midsommar promo or at least something dreamy like that. just feels weird and a bit disappointing. they’re beautiful though

oh wow! sure, i don't make gfx that don't have gifs much so my process is kind of a mess but i'll try to make it a bit understandable! lol

basic photoshop understanding is needed here, like knowing how to use layer masks & clipping mask the most, also how to cut the background of pictures!

we're making this!

under the cut bc it's kind of image heavy, if something isn't clear pls let me know so i can explain better <3

I started on a blank canvas of 540x600px and colored the background with the shade of pink i wanted to work with, on top of that i added a half tone texture image i found online (i think from deviantart? or maybe another place idk) changed it's blending mode to lighten, adjusted the size and then reduced the opacity of that layer so it didn't look too much in my face. this is what we have so far (ignore the cyan lines, it's only a guide to center everything in the canvas)

now i go to the left panel and click on the shapes tool and choose the ellipse one and draw an elipse in the canvas, the size of the ellipse depends on you tbh, i didn't make it too big bc i knew there was going to be a lot happening in my canvas and i needed the space to work so it's your choice how big you'll make it. once i made the ellipse, i made sure it was centered and proceeded to work on the picture i used

now the hyun pic! i opened it in another tab on photoshop, and with the pen tool i traced all of hyunjin's shape as if i was working on to erase the background (you can use the quick selection tool or the wand, i prefer the pen tool to erase backgrounds tbh) and then i went right click -> layer via copy (this is very important!) and when i had two layers (the original picture and the new layer of only hyunjin) i dragged them to my gfx canvas, and then resized it around the same height my ellipse was

make sure the pictures are ON TOP of the ellipse!!! now select only the layer of the full picture and then right click -> create clipping mask and the full picture will be inside the ellipse

we're almost there! now we select the layer that only has hyunjin and we add a LAYER MASK to it, and with a black brush we paint the parts we want to erase

now i added some decorations, found the sparkly lines i used around the image on pinterest! they are called monoline frames and there's lots of them to pick tbh, the one i found had a white background so i just inverted the color of it and then changed the blending mode to screen so only the lines of the frames were visible and then erased anything i didn't want with a layer mask, it would have been easier to find just a transparent image but pinterest doesn't have those so i had to make do lol

after this i worked on the typography! for the "love stay" i used the font called "Cleo Folk", i arranged it so on the layers panel it would be under the layer of the ellipse, then for the text that says happy hyunjin day i used the font "Gobold Extra 2". i added some lines using the line shape tool too

the heart shaped thing that says "hwang hyunjin" is a custom i made myself messing around and if you want to know how just let me know! but you can just use a warped text, it won't look like it's inside a heart but it'll still look pretty ! after that i added my watermark in the corner and saved it as png and all done! for the other image on the set the process was the exact same!

i answered this questions here too, but after some thought, the first thing that really made me laugh like i was dying was the run bts episode where jungkook made the sweet potatoes that stuck to the plate. he was my bias at the time too, and i was smitten by how fucking cute and silly he was. still makes me laugh all these (2 lol) years later. when jin got hit in the nuts with the air hockey puck. when suga unplugged the tv while jin was playing. they're pure chaos without even trying and i love them very much.

In todays dream, my whole family was invited to my uncles house but there was so little room that we were all miserable and we heard that after we left they were planning to have a meeting to discuss how to not invite people in the future, rude 🙄

There was this dude with a weird power where he could touch someone and know where they are LMFAO. And he helped us find a baby that we were supposed to be baby sitting.

But then there was a portal in the desk that I was organizing because they were a mess and we got sent to different places.

I was sent to this weird art student's home and she gave off weird witch vibes and excitedly showed me her collection of gore paintings and it was in the form of a PowerPoint. I wanted to keep the conversation going because I had an ominous feeling she was going to kill me if it ended.

I remember thinking I don't like gore but she's rly done her research and she even had a bibliography in the end and I was like wow r u a college student and she was like yup n then i asked her if her instructor was okay with her doing gore and she was like oh hell yeah and that her dad had suggested it to her in the first place.

And then she showed me her other drawings like this man that was standing beside a tree and the roots ran rly deep. She told me it was supposed to be a medieval depiction of a man that was infected with the plague but didn't know it yet and I totally got what she was talking abt and even gave her tips like she could've blended the colors around the man and colored him that way and then she finished my thought saying yeah and that way it would be so post modern... Idk why that makes it postmodern but okay.

And then i started giving her tips about automating her process in photoshop but then she got annoyed and told me yeah yeah but I rly like doing it by hand and I didn't press her.

While she was distracted, I got a feeling that the portal had reopened and ran toward the door but it was locked. She came behind and said oh an hour has passed, you should be able to go. And just as she said it, the door opened and she came to the other side with me.

But then (and this is the point where the dream was heavily influenced by the vampire diaries) my sister and that weird guy with the power were fighting because he had been possessed and then whatever possessed him transfered to the gore girl and my sister ripped her head off and I was like hey i really liked her ☹️

But then somehow we could see her ghost. Idk if we had died too but then we were telling her how she had died and apparently it was the dancing zombie virus, and she was like, 'The dancing zombie virus, really?' in a very I-thought-id-seen-it-all type of way. Aw I'm gonna miss her she had such a good sense of humour, which is why I'm writing this down. I want to remember so that I can dedicate my next character to her.

-iPad(It looks awesome!)Almost never. Accomplished a year after, and in 2022 (M1 iPad Air -> M1 iPad Pro)

-Macbook(Pro)(same reason as iPad)Same reason as iPad. Acquired in college (15” Retina) Still uses the laptop, but lightly or while on the go. Good powerhouse for more than 7 years.

-DSLR(or even a good P&S)Z981, still need a DSLR. Acquired, but not heavily used. Maybe will invest in a mirrorless camera one day.

-Adobe Creative Suite. I have my ways to get it hehe.

-iMac(as a substitute for Macbook) Nah, I have a gaming desktop

-Record something in the outside world without being afraid...I fail at this as well. Still a bit uncomfortable, but I can do it!

-Be a railfan!(me going to take pics on trains)I'm getting there... Done it back in college. Now I just want to watch trains from time to time.

-Ride the commuter lines around here in Nor Cal (never ever ridden on a commuter train(Amtrak doesn't count))Don't have the money or parents refuse...(Never ever is redundant. I do have to plan out scripts so I can provide a cohesive review. Also, you managed to get gigabit internet after moving out (yes you did move out).

-Skits. Produce Videos with either friends or cousins. Skits will make us famous...and hope its not impromptu.  Less skits, more gameplay and group play. Check channel

-Practice more on Photography. Close but no cigar.  I’m surprisingly decent with both  a smartphone camera (technology has improved a lot in the past 11 years) and a DSLR. I have learned the ways of at least taking a decent photo compared to others, that’s for sure.
