Summary:

It’s a normal day for Alfred Pennyworth. He spends it taking care of the manor and watching over its inhabitants, just as he does every other day. It’s an exhausting, never-ending task, that he wouldn’t change for the world. But that night, he is confronted by a stranger in his rooms with a copy of every single soul-binding contract he’s signed for the protection of his family. The new Ghost King wants to update his terms and conditions.

Alfred POV, Ghost King Danny, with some Post-Vivisection goodness and only a little (a lot) of blood and gore and medical fun, but that's for later. Not for the squeamish, please check the tags!!

It’s a normal day for Alfred Pennyworth.

He wakes up early enough to be ready to greet Master Duke with breakfast when he shambles into the kitchen, he cleans, he greets the rest of the manor’s residents when they finally make it downstairs, he cleans, he goes down to the cave to rouse Master Tim from another sleepless night, he cleans.

It’s a quiet day, or as much as one can be when the place he calls home is filled with vigilantes.

He drops off Masters Damian, Tim, and Duke at school and uses the rest of the trip to pick up some groceries for dinner. Coq au vin tonight, he thinks, it’ll be perfect for the changing of the seasons. A mushroom and lentil substitute for Master Damian will do lovely.

The rest of the day is spent preparing the meal and doing a spot of gardening before it’s time for the school run again. He can’t help but smile fondly as he listens to them needle and tease each other, only stepping in when it starts to become too pointed.

Yes, it’s a normal day for Alfred Pennyworth. It’s at night when it all changes.

There’s a ghost waiting for him in his room. 

A soft glow emanates from the creature’s vaguely transparent body and a crisp frost creeps slowly across the floor, sparkling in the darkness like diamonds.

“Mr. Pennyworth?” it says, the voice bouncing off the walls so that it sounds like hundreds of beings instead of one.

Fear squeezes at his heart and the air in the room turns dark and heavy, so that Alfred struggles to breathe. His mouth is dry, his head is swimming, and he’s not entirely sure if he’s going to survive the night.

season 9 has been amazing but i’m kinda excited to be around for the beginning of a hermitcraft season, they were well into the empires crossover arc when i started watching double life (which was pretty much my introduction to mcyt in general) so this is gonna be my first time actually being around for the early game

I wanted to expand more on my SWTD + ISM crossover. I’m just… so ill for it. I swear to the hallucinogenic pasta noodles that I’ll be getting back to requests and stuff soon, I’m just still working on my fic and my life and now this shit.

Spoilers for both Still Wakes The Deep and In Sound Mind, of course. Tread with caution, and a tolerance for the long rants of a man taken by the brain worms™️.

What if Caz ends up in the CU at some point? Desmond would have to go back in to keep him from going nuts. If he hasn’t already, that is.

A headcanon of mine is that, once a person has succumbed to their Shadow, they’re left as a sort of husk, a shell of themselves. They function, yeah, but they certainly aren’t themselves. They move around, they do miscellaneous tasks and they even work, but they don’t speak, at least not normally. Like, if they’re asked something common, like if they’re alright or something, they’ll answer with whatever they usually say to that question. If they’re asked anything more complex, they’ll just repeat a generic, common response, or not answer at all. Think, the Shadows talking to themselves and Desmond, but not really saying anything complex outside of their feelings and their goals (mostly just to kill Desmond).

Something like that happens to Caz, after he gets exposed to AR like Desmond or Lucas had (I’m thinking Lucas, because whatever strain of the stuff they dosed Desmond with just sent him into a funky coma) in some way. They get a call from Suze (with Billy flipping out in the background) and she says that Caz has suddenly stopped making sense, and he’s just been doing the dishes, or sweeping the floor, or whatever, for an unreasonable amount of time now, and they’re worried about him. So they go to their place to try and get through to Caz.

I think Lucas was in the CU during his own exposure to it way back when, in a sort of "pocket space" similar to the patients homes, or Desmond’s office, or even the In Between Tapes. But he wasn’t there for long, either due to the dosage of the chemical, the strain, or some other factor. Therefore, he has some experience with it, but not as much as Desmond. I imagine there would be a brief fight about it, because Desmond’s terrified of going back, but is their best bet to help Caz, and Lucas knows Desmond’s scared but would have no idea what he’s doing. But they can’t both go in. Rosemary is busy, and the others are off the table.

Eventually, Suze gets fed the fuck up with how long this is taking, and puts her foot down. Either they make up their minds and take her with, or she goes in alone. Billy is… not happy about this, but he’s also getting impatient. This is their partner on the line, and they aren’t keen on wasting time when he could be in danger in there.

And so, Desmond and Suze (against his and Lucas’ wishes, but they can’t exactly stop her once she’s made up her mind) go into the Collective, and right off the bat, Desmond can tell something’s off (more so than usual).

Either due to the Shapes presence in the form of Caz (and maybe Billy and Suze, depending on if they’re Infected by now) or something else, things are definitely different. The Building is wrecked (again, more so than usual), and the town outside, while not as flooded as when he left, is practically destroyed, in a way that the tainted water couldn’t achieve.

So now, Desmond is trying to convince Suze to leave, because now things are even more uncertain, and she’s getting pissed off because of, well, everything. Lucas is on the phone with Rosemary, feeding them as much information and tips as he can through the radio, and suddenly he informs them that something’s changed with Caz.

Now they have a time limit, so there’s no time to fight about Suze being there. There search for Caz’s door, and find it somewhere on the first floor with the other’s doors. (I imagine it’s be a dark blue or smt, or maybe the same funky pink color the Shape was had.) They go in, and it’s their old home. The bedroom is kept shut by a sort of veil or small sheet or smt made of oil. I’m sure you can see where this is going.

They get Caz’s tape (he’s nowhere in the Building, so it’s their only option) and play it. Once they do, and once they listen to his session bits with Desmond, they find themselves - oh oh, guess where! - on the rig.

Of course, it’s not as wrecked as it was when Caz last saw it, more like it was soon after the first explosion, after Caz woke up. And they can hear him, his howling echoing through the rig. They can’t see him yet, but he sounds big. They find some more of those oil veils, though they don’t have anything to remove them just yet.

There’s the obligatory call from Rainbow to mess with Desmond, because I said so, but there’s also other calls. It’s similar to the session fragments in Lucas’ tape, though instead of how they were presented there, in Caz’s tape they’re the phone calls he had while on the rig, although not all of them are like that. Some of them are more like internal or external dialogue, like when he first encountered each infected, or when he talked to other survivors, like his conversation with Finlay before Gibbos section. If this were from a gameplay standpoint, they’d only find these calls or voicemails or whatevers by picking up a phone with something different about it. Depending on where the phone is, it will play a specific line. From a fic standpoint, they just hear the phones ringing once they get close. At first they ignore them, because they think it’s Rainbow and they don’t have time for that right now, but after answering a call from him while they’re safe, they go back and listen to them to try and piece together enough to defeat Caz’s Shadow.

Speaking of his Shadow, I’d like to think that it sorta takes the form of @milestonekestrel ‘s (sorry bout the @) Infected Lizard Caz. Big ol’ lizard chasing Desmond and Suze through the rig as it slowly but surely falls apart beneath them. It wouldn’t be all fleshy squishy though, it will be leaking oil (though I can’t decide if it want it to be AR oil stuff or more like the tainted water stuff, or a combo of Shape stuff and AR stuff) and parts of it will be practically made of it. It would be a bit bigger than the Bull, so that it can move through the rig, and get blocked off in reasonable spots, and just generally be terrifying while chasing Desmond and Suze. It would talk a lot like the Infected did, with some Shadow-typical stuff thrown in. They can’t really hurt it without the item, though they can briefly stun it by shooting its stomach when it lunges.

And, because of course, one of the things you need is Caz’s screwdriver, like in Max’s tape. I’m weak, okay?

The item/weapon for Caz’s tape is, you guessed it! His lighter. It would be in his room (Desmond and Suze would’ve entered the tape in the helipad) and with it, they can burn Caz’s Shadow by lighting its oily spots on fire. While it’s distracted trying to extinguish the flames, they run to a safe area. Wash rinse repeat until they reach the derrick.

The boss fight happens there, of course, and I suck ass at action so no specifics, but they defeat his Shadow (the Infected? Maybe just call it the Shape to be lazy? What about the Flesh? That’s fun) and, after the heart-to-heart with it, it fades away, and they return to the Building and het back in contact with Lucas, who confirms that Caz is back to himself and really wants his wife back. So they return, and that’s that!

I think that, like some of the other tapes, there would be echos of sorts of the other crew members, and while I’m on the fence about there being Inkblots, considering that Rainbow clearly had the ability to spawn them, though it’s unclear if he spawns all of them, and I’d like Rainbow to be a more neutral force here, I want there to be some sort of damage-causing force where the Infected were on the rig. Like how the echos in Lucas’ tape damage you sometimes, but on a bigger scale, requiring Desmond and Suze to sneak around the area to avoid getting hurt. Smt like that. Sorta like the mannequins in terms of lore and interactions but, evil, y’know?

Meanwhile, outside of the Collective Unconscious, Billy and Lucas are just chatting away. I have no idea how well they’d get along, but I think Billy would certainly appreciate the distraction. He’s used to weird shit by now, with where I put this in the crossover not-quite-story, but that doesn’t mean he knows much about what’s happening, so hearing about it from Lucas himself is comforting.

When Suze and Desmond finally get out of the CU, she, Caz, and Billy have a long heart-to-heart, and after a while of being ignored, Desmond and Lucas decide to check up on them later, and leave to have their own little post-angst comfort talk.

I have zero fricking idea how this turned into an almost-fic, but I’m not about to change it. I have so many ideas about Caz’s tape and his Shadow, and how many metaphors I can reasonably shove into it, but I do not wanna write it all out rn.

What his Rorschach test transcript said, and what song his vinyl is, is up for interpretation. I imagine that the last letter Suze sent him is near his lighter, and the one Suze reads at the end of SWTD is in the bedroom behind the oil veil. Ugh I have so many ideas bro :’^.

Also just generally - WOW are we on a heavy push for the Superman office right now. Which I have no problems with, let me be clear - we're due for one to rebalance the titles - but it's extraordinarily obvious.

Looking at the trades, I have generally thought they've been making sensible decisions about the DC Finest line, but... I get the intention of the Batman ones, in that this is a direct sequel to the Year One and Two trade that is picking up the next year of Batman and 'Tec plus the two big graphic novels published over that exact period...but packaging The Killing Joke and Son of the Demon together with everything else here is wild, especially as, once again, they're not bothering to put either Batgirl Special or Oracle Year One with TKJ, and Son of the Demon should be packaged with at least Bride, even if you don't add Birth.

They are continuing to collect Balent Catwoman though, which is something we've needed, so kudos to that.

Audiodrama Sunday 12/22/2024

I got really into Give Me Away this week, but there was also a lot of other stuff. Tons of guest voices this week!

Give me away - I finished season 1 and started season 2. Graham finally gets his second! So much drama. This show has such an interesting editing style with how they end scenes with hard cuts so often. Give Me Away really reminds me of The Pasithea Powder with the "sci-fi stuff exists to set up drama". Shows focused on characters and drama have the best villains, Harbor also has a great villain. Sticking Joshua in Graham intentionally was such a cold move from Brooke/Diedra. The forgive me crossover was very fun.

@starfallpod - This episode recontextualizes so much of Fel’s character. With the ending of this episode, everything is going to come to a head next episode when Leona inevitably has to rescue Fel.

@midnightburgr - We learned so much about the benefactor in this episode. “trying to undo the big bang” is an absolutely insane villain motivation. His plan is also crazy. An entire galaxy full of clones of humans trapped in their own personal torment nexuses.

@worldgonewrongpod - Happy national maple syrup day! Hot take, maple syrup is overrated. Come at me. I love the worldbuilding as to how the zombie horses exist now.

Starwhal Odyssey - the cast spending 15 minutes deciding how fantasy podcasts work is absolutely what I’m here for. I love how consistently anticapitalist everything from oneshot it.

@midstpodcast - This show loves hinting at really weird worldbuilding then never getting into it. I desperately want to learn more about the timekeepers guild.

Mall brats - “I’ll have three fingers of ragu” got me good. The photograph with Charles was both so funny and actually really endearing.

Skyjacks: Courier's Call - June having a little kieran and cici on her shoulders, but they're both devils, is incredible. It's very cool to see more wing whisperers in the world.

Hello, I would like to tell you a little story called "how I failed to listen to malevolent." I hope you enjoy.

I am pretty sure I came across your monster Magnus series when it was still being frequently updated. It was fantastic, lots of fun God!Jon vibes and much other besides. Of course, I had to see what you wrote other than that. And you had two other big Magnus fics, "I prefer my heart..." and "and eat it, too." So I read "and eat it, too" and I liked that one even more. But big problem. Crossover.

Well, I liked your fic. More than anything else, I loved how you wrote the characters. Good characterization is worth its weight in gold, and I wasn't going to let a little thing like a new fandom keep me gated from so much high quality fic—because it seemed you had written a ton of stuff for the fandom. This one massive 750k series about Hastur and whatever? I could do the prereqs. Easy. Only had to finish up to 29 for this fic.

Here's the kicker. I tried. But man, the density of it, the interplay, the detective work, it just didn't work for me over an audio medium. I got up to 10 and then just let myself read the prologue chapters featuring the main characters as a treat.

So um, that didn't work. Whoops. I sort of bulldozed through the entire fic in one day, just like I had "and eat it."

...I may have reread "I prefer" a couple of times since. It's just such good Jon/Martin past canon content. Even if I did learn that John was the King. Whoops.

And I mean, I'd already been spoiled. So I might as well read corrupted, when it came out. I didn't exactly intend to, but I HAD to read that little side story you did in the dark world. And sure, that's where I finally stopped purposefully skimming a few parts and learned that Faroe had drowned, but it was worth it!

Then I read "yellow city." I mean, it was a complete canon au! It probably couldn't tell me anything I didn't already know! And cloud city. But it was such a cool follow up to such a wild cliffhanger! Arthur in the city of a mad god? Come on, what a dynamic!

So I mean, it only made sense to read corrupted. It probably wouldn't tell me anything I didn't already know! And sure, Tim wasn't my favorite character, but I liked TMA and SHIT THIS WAS REALLY GOOD AND WHY AM I SHIPPING THIS—

....I should really just listen to malevolent so I can read surrogate, right? That's the prize. 750k of a cool ass au you and your cowriters had been churning out. Frequent updates. I mean, as much as I'd spoiled myself, I still had huge gaps other than what happened around certain points. I didn't know most of what happened to Arthur, other than a few key points. I didn't really get Kayne's place in canon. I knew almost nothing about Faroe. Didn't know what actually went down with Parker in canon, all of this stuff.

I made it two episodes in before I lost my airpods and started procrastinating listening.

...surely. surely. I could just check out the first few fics in the series and see if I could grasp it.

So, i finished surrogate. Kind of. I ended up skipping around a bit the last 50 fics or so because I got so entranced with Arthur and John's relationship and kinda couldn't commit to going to bed without seeing where it was going. But um. Wow. That is a hell of a fic.

And also oops I got spoiled on cannibalism, yellow, how parker died and who he is, Kayne, and like...so many things. So many things. Whoops.

I think you (and your coauthors, but really this process started probably back around "I prefer") might have ruined me for power dynamics. I am not sure how i will ever find a relationship more exciting and delightful and sexy than one is a god, one is a human, both are people, both really want this to work, but you know, things are getting in the way. Like tentacles. And the inability to touch their loved one without exploding them. And years of failed communication.

Holy shit, Arthur is a true paragon of self loathing. I can't even. How many years of this slow burn?!!!? A decade!???!! Literally can't believe I'm saying this, but poor Hastur. Poor everyone around them.

Like, I myself am ace. I don't really care about sex in relationships I'm reading, and I honestly don't even care if characters are together or not as long as they're interacting in fun ways and not pining across the room. I really can't overstate that. But even I was screaming, by like 140 fics into this series, "JUST FUCK ALREADY!!!"

okay but seriously what's going on in surrogate right now is having all of my wildest wish fulfillment for fiction written and displayed before me. I have already reread the relevant fics in the series. John and Arthur having their like fifth divorce, this time because congrats, it's a god (that doesn't share a head with his favorite person anymore), is such good fucking food.

I must ask, I have noticed you bring up a malevolent server at some point in your chapter notes. Is this an open server? Despite me, still, STILL, having failed to listen to malevolent, I would love to have people to scream with. Though of course if it's not open, totally understand.

Apologies (for the deception) for not leaving comments on any of your fics. I have a bit of a problem with commenting, it's sort of a procrastination, ADHD thing. I hope to leave them one day. But in the meantime I would like you to know that I have read SO MANY of your fics, and enjoy them on a range from "this is great" to "I would not be upset if someone ripped out my soul and replaced it with these words." Love your stuff. Thank you for returning to the chaos that is fanfiction, cause finding fic like yours is the reason I am still here!

At first, my reaction to the counterparts was like, oh wow they're scumbags! Like Bro, Sans is literally paying for you to live in your house and you guys are doing nothing to help the situation besides telling him that he's a bad brother and that they're gonna take Papyrus from him (well Blue did). Now that's just plain out ridiculous. How is this supposed to turn into found family, I don't see it. Well, as I read on, I got my answer. Now the counterparts aren't so bad, I mean, they're trying, and that's what matters... Right?.)

My mind was blown away by how amazing the storytelling, characters, fluff, angst, everything was written. Reading the first chapter, I was like if this fic doesn't get popular then I'm going to pull my hair out. I can't describe how PHENOMENAL this story is. (This trope is getting popular, and I can't decide whether to love or hate it! It hurts my heart to see Peter like this. The difference between this fic and all the other, 'Tony has obvious favouritism' fics I've read, is that the Avengers are as much the same as Tony, but in this fic, they are actually trying to get along and see what's wrong. I know Peter's 16 and they haven't noticed before but it's better trying late them not trying at all. It warms my heart that (so far) Bruce and Bucky are trying.)

(Apple bobbing this not something you want to do if you have a very bad history with water. The Crossover Bar AU: the Beginning

“What… what the fuck?”

Desmond didn’t know what was gonna happen after the Temple (after sacrificing himself), but waking up in a bar, a 1920’s style speakeasy, was not what he was expecting.

It looks new, it smelled new, the scent of fresh wood and fabrics, stocked up alcohol and syrups, it was nice- really nice. He didn’t know what to make of it, but his body moved anyway. Stepping behind the counter he found so many bottles, glasses, there was modern bartending tools and shakers, also new. It felt like someone placed everything here, just for him. Like this was all just for him.

“So, do you like it?”

Holy shit- oh wow it’s been a while since anyone could sneak up on him. Desmond reflexively held his hand to the speaker’s throat, hidden blade at the ready.

“Wha- I- who are you?” He sputtered, eyes wide at the girl, no really, it was a girl. At least- he thinks, his mind couldn’t comprehend any detail about her. Like everything about her was glitching beyond recognition. She was short, and that’s all Desmond could tell about her.

“Don’t worry about that,” she grinned(?), nudging his hand away from her throat, and weirdly enough, he let her. “Answer my question, do you like it?” She repeated, not rudely per say, just… eager. Like a little kid showing her mom her drawing.

Blinking, Desmond lowered his hand, and took another look around.

There were wooden tables and chairs everywhere, nicely made from what he could tell, set up in a circle around a stage across from the entrance. The curtains a bright, vivid blood red, and there were lights up on the ceiling to brighten it up. From his place at the bar he could see a balcony, a second floor, but besides the railing and the edge of a pool table, he couldn’t see much else. On the walls were empty picture frames, waiting for something to occupy them- well, most of them- the one by the entrance had a portrait of Desmond with a golden frame.

It felt…

“It’s… home,” he blurted, “it feels like home.”

The girl(?) made a happy noise, bouncing up and down excitedly, “I knew it! I knew you’d like it!” She squealed, a warped and echoing sound, “oh I can’t wait! There’s gonna be so many more, they’re gonna like it too! You’ll see!” Before Desmond could respond, he felt arms wrap around his middle, “I’m gonna go get them, stay right here! Oh they’re gonna love you! You won’t be lonely, I promise!” And then she was gone. Just- he blinked and she was gone.

“Don’t mind her, the Apprentice is just excited,” someone explained, sounding both amused and fond. “This is her first project.”

Desmond looked to the other end of the bar, finding a man(?) sitting with an empty glass. He couldn’t see his features either, but that’s because he was engulfed in a bright light from head to toe. He felt familiar- distant- like looking into a funhouse mirror, him just not really… he even sounded sort of like-

“Hey, don’t do that,” he interrupted Desmond’s thoughts, holding up his empty glass, “you’ll get a headache. Now then, you’re a bartender, aren’t you? Mind pouring me something?”

Shaking out of his stupor, Desmond reached for the shelf, “right, uh, what’d you want…?” He asked, head still buzzing.

“You can call me the Reader,” the Reader told him, a smile in his faint voice, “that Whiskey will do.” He pointed at the bottle Desmond’s hand was hovering over.

After pouring him a glass, Desmond twitched, “uh, what do you mean- about her- the Apprentice- this project- what-?”

The Reader chuckled, “You’re not the first, you won’t be the last,” he muttered, more to himself than to Desmond, “she’s a good friend, she wanted to try something new, something different than what I usually do- or what They usually do- so I’m letting her try it out. This place is gonna be a catch all, a hub for any Soul needing somewhere to go, a place where they can Crossover the threshold without- well, y’know. Of course since you’ll be the Host, you have the final say over everything, this domain is all yours.”

“What? Who- I don’t understand, what the fuck does all of that mean?” Desmond spluttered. The Reader just laughed again. Asshole.

“You’ll get it soon enough,” he took a swig of whiskey and pointed to the door, “look, your first Guest is here.”

“Seriously? I’m not gonna fall for that,” and he was gone in a blink too, nothing but an empty glass to even hint someone else was here, “goddammit.”

Desmond didn’t know what to make of all this, who the Reader or the Apprentice were, what they were doing, what they even are in the first place, but he knew people were coming, Guests, the Reader said, and that he’s the Host. So that’s what he’s gotta do then, if the bar was made for him, and that’s what he’s here for, he might as well… right? What else was he supposed to do? He’s supposed to be dead, but he’s here as the Host.

Taking the glass and grabbing a cleaning rag from under the counter, he cleans it. Looking up at the doors, before hearing them swing open and watching someone stumble onto the floor with shouts of shock and thuds of limbs scrambling to catch onto the smooth floor.

“Hey, welcome to the- wait- Clay!”

“Seventeen!?”
