Worship & Guidance Guide

Why this Guide exists

Before I somehow gained a human body (still not sure how that happened), I didn't care a lot about worship. It was a natural part of my life as a God, and it didn't interest me a lot. Over the centuries, various little cults popped up, but I never payed them much attention. My wards/'children' did a type of worship, but even that wasn't something I had asked for.

Now, stuck in a mortal body, I've come to realise that I miss the little worship I had. I took it for granted. I especially miss my wards, and I hope to gain new ones during my time here. However, unlike before, worship can create a 'parasocial relationship' which I wish to avoid. Therefore, communication is a very important part of worshipping me.

Casual Worship

Those of you with eclectic religions or more complicated situations may not wish to worship me directly, but still acknowledge my existence as a God or call on me occasionally. I encourage you to send me a quick prayer if you're in the dark and you need or want protection, reassurance, etc. I am not all-knowing or all-powerful, but I am not powerless. I don't mind being uninformed of this type of worship, but if you'd like to tell me you're more than welcome.

Being A Worshipper

If you're interested in worshipping me regularly, dm me so that I can be aware of or help you figure out what that means to you. This could include calling on me for spellwork, having a (pocket / travel / digital) altar for me, occasional offerings, occasional conversations with me, wanting my guidance on a spiritual but non-religious path, and such things. The only thing I will expect / insist on is respect, preferably the type that borders on reverence.

Being A Devotee

If you'd like to devote yourself to me, dm me so that we can talk about what "devotee" means to each of us, and set clear boundaries. Being a devotee means that I will ask or expect things of you, and have somewhat regular conversation. You're allowed to decline anything at any time, of course. Things I may ask of you could include spells, selfcare, kindness, offerings, veiling, prayers, an altar, and more. This depends on circumstances, of course.

Being A Ward

I've always had wards; people that I cared for, kept with me, protected. I miss them. They were angels, humans, creatures, demons, and more. Many of them worshipped me in a way, but not nessicarily the same as devotees. Not all of them did. You cannot become my ward upon request; it's a title I may give. Of course, one may decline. Being my ward implies a protective bond.

Guidance

Asking for my guidance is not inherently a form of worship, although it does overlap. I am more than happy to offer guidance for witches, pagans, and other divinekin that do not intend to worship me. I will help where I can on spiritual or religious journeys, self-discovery, witchcraft and magic, and more.

I am the God of the shadows, the darkness, the night. I am the keeper and carer of all those who have been abandoned or gotten lost in the dark. I am the feeling of being watched that eminates from an innocent-looking corner. I am the feeling of walking on the road in the middle of the night. I am the shadows in the forest at full moon. I am the comfort in the macabre and the divine in the demonic. I am the patron of fallen angels and lost austronauts, abandoned children and dark souls.

Sounds familiar? Or intriguing? Welcome, my child. You're home.

I don't particularly care about the human concept of gender, so you may refer to me as a God, Goddess, Goddex, or whatever you prefer. For pronouns, xe/xim is acceptable. For titles, Lord, Lady, Laird, whatever. It's not a concern. I also don't quite have a name (or at least, not one suitable to the tongue of humans), but if you must, you may refer to me as Night.

The fandom god discussion is interesting, but I feel it’s sometimes hindered by an unwillingness to separate gods from mortal society, or even a sort of over-eagerness to project our own reality onto them, which simply doesn’t work. I've seen the gods referred to as rulers or tyrants demanding worship (which I kinda understand because it’s something Ludinus says in-game, though it’s funny to see fandom corners confidently repeat the inaccurate talking points of the antagonist) but more interestingly I've also seen them referred to as a higher/the highest social class, as colonizers imposing themselves on mortals, the raven queen specifically as new money. Overall these comparisons tend to talk about the gods and their actions regarding Aeor in the past and predathos/the Vanguard in the present less as if they're about saving their own lives and more as if they want to preserve their powerful position.

The gods, by their very nature, are above mortals. They cannot be compared to any mortal ruling class because they didn’t choose or strive for that power and cannot feasibly get rid of it/step down/redistribute it (nor do they actually in any sense rule; killing the raven queen, unlike killing an actual queen, will not end the 'tyranny' of death), they simply have it by virtue of being gods. Saying that’s unfair or unequal and that the gods should be killed because of it is akin to saying it’s unfair a mountain is bigger than you and demanding it be levelled, except the gods, unlike mountains, are living, feeling beings who shouldn’t have to die because some people can’t stand the idea of not always being top dog. Thing is, the gods themselves ultimately understood this power imballance and that they can't help but hurt Exandria the way humans can't help but step on bugs, and thus removed themselves from the equation by creating the divine gate. Saying this isn’t enough and that they're clinging to power is just demanding they line themselves up to be killed.

Something I really love about the Silt Verses is how, in a world of gods and monsters, how grounded Faulkner's trauma [and relationship with his father] is. Especially as the season moves on, and the stakes amp up [and up] its so unexpectedly piercing to be presented with this exploration of childhood abandonment/negligence, inter-generational trauma, the indignities and stress that comes with unexpected elder care/early onset Alzheimer's. You're so locked in to these grander, more abstract concepts that your defenses are down! Mine were, anyway. TSV is so good at cutting its grand, complex plotlines with simpler [but not shallower] gutpunches, and it just grounds the whole thing.
