when you combine this with the efforts to extend retirement age to 70 and over, it's very clear that our politicians, but specifically gop conservatives, are hell-bent on sacrificing the population at the altar of capitalism. they want us to start working earlier and to work longer into our lives, all while not paying a living wage and raising the price of just about everything. it is the continuing evil of capitalism run amok.

The three-day [Conference on Women and the Workplace, convened in 1976] featured traditional presentations and livelier discussion periods. The medical director of Dow Chemical, Harold Gordon, fretted that his company could be held liable for discrimination if it excluded fertile women from certain high-risk jobs, and for harm to their offspring if it didn't. Dow was trying to do the right thing, Gordon said, but there were many questions: "What is the population at risk? How is it identified? What specific agents need to be considered? How are they identified? What restrictions are needed? When do they apply? To whom do they apply?" The [Oil, Chemical, and Atomic Workers]'s Tony Mazzocchi was unsympathetic. "There isn't a single worker, including those at Dow, who knows what the hell he works with in the first place," he said. "No industry has allowed us to look at the monitoring data.... We aren't being told what is carcinogenic or what is teratogenic. We are learning after the fact." It was the union's position, he said, that neither women nor men should have to be removed from a job to protect the unborn; "our position is to make the workplace safe for everyone." ...
For workers like Yvette Flores [whose child was born with severe intellectual disabilities after her exposure to dangerous solvents and lead-based solution in her job manufacturing lasers for Spectra-Physics], the most germane speaker was Andrea Hricko with the Labor Occupational Health Program at the University of California, Berkeley. Hricko had been investigating, with growing alarm, the electronics industry, which then employed some 271,000 workers in the United States. More than three-quarters of these workers were women, she said, and many were "nonwhite. A higher percentage do not speak English. And few of them are organized." Hricko said she'd heard from some California workers that "dark-skinned women, including Filipinos, Chicanos and Blacks, are often assigned to certain departments in electronics plants where chemicals are used that cause skin rashes. This is done because the skin rashes are not as obvious on the dark skin and, therefore, the workers don't complain as much as the company doesn't have to deal with the complaints." Some plants didn't allow languages other than English to be spoken, "even in departments where the majority of women are non-English-speaking," Hricko said. Intimidation was common. Women in one Silicon Valley plant who'd prepared a warning leaflet on trichloroethylene "had to leave copies of it in the women's rest room so that the male management people would not snatch the copies away."

Success Story #1: Circumstances improve for my non-romantic SP
I wanted to share my most recent success story about my work buddy (who we'll call Gary) who became an SP in my life.
As stated in the title, Gary is not a romantic SP, he's just a friend I have at my job. He's really kind, hilarious, and outgoing, and funny enough, he's good friends with a romantic SP of mine which is how we became close in the first place.
Gary and I got to talking a lot every time we'd work a shift together. It was really nice and we would make each other's days just getting to talk to each other. He's even rooting for me and my romantic SP (who we'll call Bee); he's played role as wingman through the bad circumstances for quite some time, which is really kind of him.
However, all of a sudden, Gary wouldn't talk to me nearly as much as he did before. His whole demeanor changed and I had no idea what was going on because he got so quiet. The amount of friendly greetings was lacking and almost every time I saw him, I'd have to be the one to start the conversation. There were also times I'd get ignored. It made me feel a bit down and worried. The few things he did mention to me were his horrid living situation, lack of sleep, and car troubles. So, I was under the assumption the lack of communication between us was due to the stress of his personal issues, although anxiety told me he just found me annoying or "Bee might not want me anymore. So, Gary is distancing himself."
I was feeling a bit down about it anytime I'd see Gary at work and felt a slight bit of annoyance when he'd chat it up with other people but not me. It was getting to a low point.
However, what got me out of this situation was rampaging (repeating over and over in my mind) "He will talk to me a lot" every time I saw him, wishing the best for him, reassuring myself it was his issues causing the poor communication, and moving on from the situation when I started feeling annoyed. They were such simple, subconscious things that I'd repeatedly do and because of that repetition, that persistence, Gary's bad circumstances improved all at once.
Within about a week, the issues Gary had were resolved, plus he got a job promotion. I got an enthusiastic greeting and he told me about what changed. Now, we're back to actively having our conversations and he's even kinder to me than he was before. It's amazing and I'm so happy for him!
Mind you, I didn't time any of this, I didn't take any sort of action in an attempt to fix the situation, and I was having feelings of sadness and annoyance. All I did was think of the few simple things I mentioned and it came to fruition in real life.
Keep persisting, even through negative feelings.

Quebec Labour Minister Jean Boulet has amended his law project, Bill 19, regulating youth employment in the province to allow children under 14 to work in agriculture, provided the business has a maximum of 10 employees.
The proposed law, tabled in March, would limit the number of weekly hours Quebecers 16 and under can work during the school year to 17. It also sets the minimum legal working age at 14 — with some exceptions for jobs like babysitting or tutoring.
But Boulet's amendment would allow small agricultural businesses to be exempt from the new minimum working age and employ children as young as twelve.
[...]
This new exemption echoes the demands of employers, who asked for more exceptions to allow children under 14 to work.
But there are concerns over the agricultural environment being risky as injuries in young people are frequent. Some doubt the ability of Quebec's labour regulator, La Commission des normes, de l'équité, de la santé et de la sécurité du travail (CNESST), to ensure the safety of children in the workplace.
