A Path forward

In the ongoing effort to feed Hero mash (which takes a while to eat) while not letting Leo bully him or steal it, I have taken to putting Hero outside the fence. He's not the flighty sort who would run away down the road; he pretty much just stands there by his pan and slorps for about half an hour to 45 minutes. I multi-task by taking the dogs to the ridge nearby (I can pretty much keep an eye on Hero from there) and cutting back brush. Ideally, I'll be able to clear all along the fenceline. Letting brush overgrow your fence is a farm no-no.

Just for fun, though (ok, my definition of fun is debatable) I'm starting by putting a bit of a path from one of the horse trails to the fence line. Then I'll really get started on useful work. Looking back, I have a nice start. Looking forward:

I made some decent progress today. The dogs ADORE overgrown areas like this, so Lady and Rosalie got tons of frolicking and sniffing done. I have no concerns about being attacked by squirrels!

Also, the scenery was peaceful. If the weekend gets fraught, and it often does, I'll at least be meeting it with this tranquil moment for 'emotional fuel.'

I just started looking into this whole Ballerina Farm thing and now I’m sad thinking about how many women in the past had dreams and ambitions of being something they couldn’t because of social expectations or getting tied down to a family they never wanted.

i think there's horse sexism in the kentucky derby . field of twenty horses, right? plus a couple more runners-up that can swap in if somebody has to drop out . not a single filly in the lineup. which obviously doesn't mean i think that like ... the HORSES are sexist . but i imagine that in a field where most of the top trainers are men themselves, there's more of a focus on training the colts that come across their paths, and perhaps even more colts being selected to be trained towards these big races in the first place . a horse is a horse is a horse, they all go fast, but there's probably an unconscious bias from breeders, trainers, owners, etc that prevents the field from being more diversified

He's also given conflicting answers about who names the children and his feelings on Noremma (or Sugita has as his proxy), so I could see it as one of those "y'all, the WSJ grind had me running so ragged for almost four years that it caused me to have serious health issues, it can be whatever date in this timeframe that you want it to be" type of deals with how little consequence it has unless one's really big on astrology (or for some lighthearted antics play into some teasing if he's actually younger than Norman lol, but I don't think they messed around with the order the children were tattooed as another layer of deception).

@temporoom's calculations are the most in-depth dive into the Grace Field identification markers that I've seen (posted here, here, here, and corrected version here) putting it between January 31st and February 5th. I think to be safe, the farm staff wouldn't put the fake date in the same month he was actually born in to further push the thought from unconsciously rising up in Isabella's mind, so I'd probably put it in February, though my personal biggest takeaway from all this is that it was another thing Isabella and the farm system denied him and separated him from his siblings.

Chicks? Yet?

I approached LB with great anticipation this morning. G-e-n-t-l-y lifted her wing while she grumbled and fluffed her feathers. It would be cool to get chicks for My Birthday, wouldn't it??

No luck, yet. I've been in "any minute, now" mode for fours days. LB is heartily sick of me checking on her, but she continues to accept bribes of strawberries, corn, and slugs. The difficulty is that the kids and I are heading west tomorrow. All the way to Minnesota, where my brother, sil, and niece live! The chick pen is all set up, with a chick-sized feeder and waterer and mama-sized ones. A dog box full of straw, chain-link fence to keep critters OUT and chicken wire to keep little ones IN. If they don't hatch by tomorrow morning, I guess my husband will get to move them.

She's setting SO many eggs; even if the ones around the edges don't hatch she'll still have a lot of chicks. I'm not entirely sure what I'm going to do with a bunch of extra chickens. However, for now, getting them hatched, moved, and raised is enough to worry about.

I am 55 today. My son took some cute pictures of me last week for an art brochure, and if he ever gets them off his camera and gives them to me it will be a nice present.

Anyhow, you probably won't hear much from me from the 23rd to the 27th. I will, I hope, be frolicking on the prairie.

Hallmark movie idea

Big city girl really busy with her job, usually comes home to small town for Christmas to spend with her family/revisit old friends, can’t this year due big project as she was just promoted.

Maybe some early turmoil about how she’s stressed and she just wants to spend time with family, maybe this job isn’t worth it. Mother telling her no, she works so hard for this job/position and she loves what she does. And to not worry about it, they’ll figure it out.

Cue family traveling to her to spend the holidays in big city since it doesn’t matter where you are just as long as we’re together.

Maybe side story, old friend who’s been with the family so long and for every holiday they’re practically apart of the family (maybe parents passed when they were early 20s). And of course the family says you’re coming with us, it’s Christmas. And this person has been trying to get out of small town forever, but they’re whole ‘family’ is here and they have no where to go. Cue a bunch of cute scenes with lead lady where they fall for each other in the big city and friend decides they want to move there to try something new in life and to be with lead.

Cut to -1 year later- you see them moving in together and getting ready to decorate for Christmas in anticipation of family visiting.
