Personally I think it does the fandom good to separate real life issues such as racial discrimination and terrorism from fantasy. Death eaters are not the nazi or the IRA, and muggleborns are not non-white people - this oversimplifies real historical events and social dynamics, forcing them into the very basic and flawed moral framework of the Harry Potter books.

I understand where you’re coming from, but a Ghanaian man playing Snape might be an indicator that we might indeed get a more diverse cast that better represents a fictional world where race is not a barrier.

Snape, unlike the marauders, is one of the main characters in the story. His complexity is rarely granted to characters played by POC.

However, fuck JKR and no one should watch this show.

Death Eaters are NOT racist. I agree it's good to keep it separate. I even take issue with the cutesy idea of them being 'basically racists' - Muggles are not a race. Death Eaters are eugenicists. There is a lot of crossover between xenophobia, racism, eugenics etc... but I think the HP books do a decent job at specifically making sure the conflict is not seen as racial at all.

The world of HP leans on actual British history. Bringing race into that is well above its pay grade. I'm not going to pretend its portrayal of race is anything much, but I see the attempts to insert an array of PoC side-characters with different views as an intentional attempt to distance the reader from thinking about racial prejudice.

But if it isn't... if the creators are just picking him to be 'the black one' because he is "kinda popular, yet also a side character many dislike - so it'll make noise for advertisement without worrying most people"... and they leave most the main cast as white...

...Then we're gonna end up in a situation where people's first experience of SWM is that of rich white kids hurting a black kid. Where a black guy, losing the white girl he wanted, joins a gang and gets them killed. Where the only teacher the main character white kids hate is black.

If there is indeed a more diverse cast - those issues disappear. I want that. Black Snape? Fuck yeah.

But indeed: fuck JKR, fuck Warner Bros - everyone should be careful where their money goes.
